Trump says that if NATO countries want the United States military to help defend them, they better start shelling out more of their own money.

That's going to put a dent in some of their socialistic tendencies.

    1. But Enough About Me   9 years ago

Cripes, if I was an American, that alone would make me vote for Trump. It's about time someone told the Euroweenies that part of their wealth and "advanced" welfare programs were a direct result of the massive multi-decade military subsidy the U.S. gives to its NATO partners.

Trump should pointedly make the same case to The Hair That Walks Like A Man?? the first time they meet after the U.S. election.

So they can have their cake and eat it too. Lots of cake.

Strong military or generous social welfare state. Choose one.

    3. Illocust   9 years ago

I imagine. Militaries are expensive. It's hard to pay for both a welfare state and a military that'll make your people feel safe. Plus with the European union having such a hard time, some folks are scared that the European countries are going to start attacking each other again.

      1. Free Society   9 years ago

Plus with the European union having such a hard time, some folks are scared that the European countries are going to start attacking each other again.

        And those people are retarded.

        1. Illocust   9 years ago

Yeah, pretty much, warring with your neighbors gets you kicked out of power in first world countries. The people worried about the EU countries duking it out are the same ones who believe that the average citizen can't decide not to eat rat poison without the help of Top Men. There morons with no faith in people's self-preservation instinct.

          1. Free Society   9 years ago

They're the same ones that believe FDR's rationing, borrowing, central banking and bomb building saved the economy. They're the same ones that believe constant warfare is the natural state of man and that only a bureaucrat can temper it.

It takes five paragraphs of carefully worded argumentation to refute five words of progressive stupidity and that's their doomsday device, their unstoppable weapon of mass retardation.

            1. ant1sthenes   9 years ago

Libertarian billionaires should fund the creation of an AI for this purpose.

    4. thom   9 years ago

If you explain that a big reason European countries can afford socialistic healthcare is that the USA is subsidizing their defense, people don't like it. It's usually met with a lot of denial, or in the case of Euro leftists, claims that they don't need to be defended and that armies are outdated or something.

      2. Illocust   9 years ago

Wait seriously, they border fucking Russia and China and they think militaries aren't necessary? The US could get away with that, Canada needs us and Mexico isn't suicidal, but the EU actually has people who might decide to try a landwar with them.

        1. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

No, those idiots border Poland and Czech Republic.

The US is also subsidizing their healthcare. We pay through the nose for new drugs because they (and most of the rest of the world) don't pay market prices.

        1. thom   9 years ago

Yes. On a bad day, one can get a little resentful how much we are lectured to by those who were are heavily subsidizing.

        2. Pay up, Palin's Buttplug!   9 years ago

Europe and Australia are going to be really butthurt if the US switches to single payer and stops subsidizing their healthcare.

      4. OneOut   9 years ago

Another reason they can afford socialized medicine is that we subsidize their drug cost and their R&D on medicine.

        George Bush a conservative ?

He signed off on Medicare part something which provided government drugs for old people. OK, not good but not terrible.

But then made it illegal for the government to negotiate price even with their enormous buying power.

So we , the taxpayers , must pay whatever list price the international drug companies say their drug costs and that's the price. Period.

Yet the exACT SAME DRUGS ARE SOLD ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR SOMETIMES DRASTICALLY LOWER PRICES.

(can you hear me now ?)

Why didn't Reason cover this???????: Megyn Kelly Ripped for Baring Flesh During Convention Coverage

The Fox News anchor was bashed on Twitter Wednesday evening for wearing a form-fitting, spaghetti-strapped top that left her shoulders and upper chest uncovered. Many viewers found the clothing inappropriate for a news anchor.

"Megyn Kelly's halter is not appropriate dress for a professional lady at the convention, especially an anchor," wrote one user.

"Can't Greta [Van Susteren] teach that freak not to dress like an escort?" asked another, referring to Kelly's on-air colleague.

There are a suspicious lack of photos.

Are you promiscuous? Ideal number of partners for men and and women revealed (and they aren't the same!)

Interestingly, the similarity between the two numbers seems to show a lack of gender double standards and indicates that both men and women aren't keen on their lover having too many notches on their bed post.

The number of sexual partners that men thought was ideal is 7.5.

It was a very similar number to the one women thought was best, which was 7.6.

FYI ladies, I have only slept with 6.6 women.

You forgot to say that some anti-Trump jokes, you suppose, are good humor.

      2. thom   9 years ago

Because they're written by "comedians" with agendas (like John Oliver, who came up with the "Drumpf" thing), who are more and more desperate to find something that actually works against the guy instead of benefiting him.

Canada's gun laws are an immoral abomination. If none of us are allowed to protect ourselves with weapons, as in Britain, then cops should have their weapons removed from their possession, as in Britain.

Hillary Clinton's "Trump Yourself" app allows users to be insulted by Donald Trump

The presumptive Democratic nominee launched a Facebook app Thursday called Trump Yourself that logs into your personal page and posts an insult that Trump has relayed toward other people on top of your profile picture.

Although the insults change each time, FOX8 web producer Dallas Britt gave the new app a try and was told: I have never seen a thin person drink Diet Coke.

More insults include "fat pig," "major loser" and "hater and loser."

The app also requests access to your emails, which it promptly deletes off your phone

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? A man who stopped by his newly purchased Southern California home expecting to find its previous owners packing up instead stumbled on one of them dead in a bedroom.

Mary Karacas, 75, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of killing her 83-year-old live-in boyfriend, Salvatore Orefice, Simi Valley police said. Karacas told detectives that she shot him after they argued.

The man who bought the house from the couple 30 days earlier found Orefice's body after going to check on their progress moving out.

Police say it is not clear when Karacas shot her boyfriend and how long he had been lying in their house before being found. She was not at the property when the homeowner stopped by.

Authorities found the gun after she told investigators it was in her car.

Jack Donovan: No One Will make America Great Again

I don't know of anyone else who calls Trump "daddy." But when I see my peers caught up in stadium-style slave wave that is ready to crown a shifty, wheeling and dealing New York City businessman as America's savior and "emperor god-king"?

    ?"daddy" does seem uncomfortably appropriate.

    [break]

Trump can never be Caesar or Hitler or Napoleon or even Mussolini, because the American people aren't Romans or Germans or French or Italian. They are all and none of those things. They aren't really anything. They don't have a shared identity or culture, and their shared history has to do with a pioneering past and the establishment of a form of government that would be recognizable to its founders only as a grotesque perversion of abstract ideals that seemed like a good idea at the time, in a very different world. If some political necromancer resurrected them to do annotate a new edition of the Declaration of Independence, they'd be footnoting the hell out of groaners like "?all men are created equal."

It's a lengthy but pretty easy read. Interesting to see an alt-right-ish writer actually come out against a Trump presidency (albeit for different reasons than usual).

          1. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

Donovan actually had a post about Mishima.

Mishima's message and tone was pretty much the same as Donovan's, as well as both being gay men who had a thing for working out and martial arts.

              1. Heroic Mulatto   9 years ago

Mishima is definitely more "arty". But if you get the chance you should read him, just because of his importance to world literature. I've always been more of a V.S. Naipaul fan, myself.

        1. Dennis, Constitutional Peasant   9 years ago

meh. *was*. Its hardly different from any public-facility now.

But back in the 'good ol days'?

several hundred homeless people had, to various degrees, moved in.
Dozens slept day and night, singly or in groups, on or besides stairs, bus
gates, benches or in various interstitial areas. They did more than block
a few routes; they openly took over whole sections. Some set up homes
above the bus gates. Many installed electrical appliances and cooked
meals. Inside the bus station, people had sex, shot heroin, gave birth and
died. People urinated on walls and in elevators. Transients took over
restrooms. Some fought and even killed over turf or other issues. Some
lived there all the time, and others moved back and forth between street
and bus station. These transients upset suburban users and contributed
to the terrible reputation of the station in New York, New Jersey and
          beyond. ...
          ...
The parking decks became ideal locations for drug and gun sales, lar-
cenies, muggings, rapes and especially prostitution. Wandering male and
female prostitutes performed their services inside or between cars, not
readily seen from patrol cars but still within view of legitimate visitors and
          their families.

I actually agree with Trump on the NATO thing. Think about it for a second - the threat is supposedly Russia, and these little countries are the ones who should understand it best. Why should we defend a country that isn't willing to defend itself? Haven't we learned our lesson on that one? Freedom isn't free.

    1. AlmightyJB   9 years ago

We should drop out of NATO

      1. thom   9 years ago

I don't know if we should actually drop out...two world wars have to have taught us something. But that doesn't mean we actively need to be providing defense to our NATO allies. Really, how much more will it take to convince the world that if necessary, we will step in and defend Europe? I have to think the threat is credible, whether we have a military presence in those countries or not.

NATO was an alliance against the Soviet block. The USSR has been in the grave for 20 goddamned years now, and NATO is fighting Arabs, not the Soviets. Time to disband NATO.

    2. DRM   9 years ago

On the one hand, it would be nice if Lithuania and Latvia made the 2% of GDP expenditure guideline (which Estonia does meet).

On the other hand, they are all above the NATO median in spending, and they're so small that even if they spent 100% of GDP and put every resident under arms they couldn't actually stop a Russian invasion. The real slackers are Canada, Slovenia, Spain, and Belgium, who are all spending less than half the guideline and spending less than the NATO guideline 20% of that on equipment rather than personnel. Belgium, for example, is just running a jobs program, with 98% of its military spending on personnel.

    He's so crazy!

    I mean, NATO countries shelling out more?! That's so . . . that's so . . . what's the word I'm looking for?

    "Reasonable".

They have plenty of money to spend on combating global warming, alternative energy, socialist benefits, refugees, etc., etc.

    1. dajjal   9 years ago

True - but the defense industries will scream bloody murder and he will back off. Just like he does with every other issue.

      1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Unlike Hillary, at least Trump isn't on the defense industry's payroll.

Defense Industry donations to Clinton Foundation:

        Boeing $5,000,000
        General Electric $1,000,000
        Goldman Sachs (Hawker Beechcraft) $500,000
        Honeywell $50,000
        Lockheed Martin $250,000
        United Technologies $50,000

        http://tinyurl.com/o6x639e

I believe those were just while she was the Secretary of State. They may have given here more since then--including donations to her campaign fund.

        1. dajjal   9 years ago

Oh - I agree. Still, Trump will change his mind and pretend he never said it and anyone who thinks he did is delusional. Don't believe it? Just watch his speech tonight. He'll recommit himself to NATO even as he insists that other countries pay their share which he will ensure through some super-secret negotiating strategy.

          1. Cytotoxic   9 years ago

This. Also, contrary to Ken's delusions, Trump is not proposing anything reasonable. He's proposing the US military become mercenaries essentially. Trump will damage those who propose less foreign policy spending simply by association.

        2. thom   9 years ago

It's always amazed me how small-potatoes those contributions are relative to the benefits the companies get back. What's $5M if you can turn it into billions in defense contracts? The ROI on those contributions must be off the charts. I wonder if they dare do any internal analysis on them.

          1. Pay up, Palin's Buttplug!   9 years ago

That's why companies engage in rent seeking.

However, it is a gamble. A dozen companies make may a 1 million dollar donation to get a 5 million dollar contract so in the aggregate, there is a large loss to the economy.

          2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

They add up for an individual though:

"In all, governments and corporations involved in the arms deals approved by Clinton's State Department have delivered between $54 million and $141 million to the Clinton Foundation as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments to the Clinton family, according to foundation and State Department records."

I randomly thought of this and so i'll share:

I was flying out of Portland a couple weeks back, and when I got in the TSA line, there was a TSA girl at the head of the line who handed me a green postcard with the time written on it. She said it was for measuring the wait time to try to "improve service." I got through the line and handed the card to the TSA agent checking my ID, but she said to hold on to it until the end. I complied, and waited until I was through security and handed it to a TSA goon who was walking by. In one single motion, the guy grabbed the card and threw it in the trash can right in front of me. I had a little laugh at that.

I spent part of March and most of April in Japan. When I headed to Narita airport to fly back to the States, the one thing that struck me was how much more pleasant the security experience was.

Not that it was less intrusive - same shit about no liquids, shoes off, laptops out of bags and all that horseshit. (And no TSA Pre-check to speed me on my way.) But the Japanese security folks were smiling, friendly, moved quickly and were actually paying attention. Mrs. Animal was with me, and she is visibly disabled (uses a walker) and the Japanese security folks fell all over themselves assisting her through the process.

Japan is generally a pretty civilized place.

This is the sort of thing that should be a huge fucking scandal, yet the media hardly even takes time to reflect before getting back to hyperventilating about RNC speech-plagiarism

The industry simply can't deal with the artificial constraints the Govt meddling has put on them. its like they're being give a set of rules that simply result in failure, and they have no choice but to play that game until they fail.

    What's the endgame? Govt takeover?

    1. tarran   9 years ago

      Govt takeover?

Yes. The original version of Obamacare had a public option. Essentially they idea was to make health insurance unaffordably expensive, reduce the availability of private health insurance, with increasing number of people ending up with the state paying for their health care. From there it would be easy to implement a U.S. version of NHS.

Once that was pulled from the bill, the current shit-show was inevitable. The architects of the bill understood that, but couldn't bear the stigma of failure that would accompany them pulling the bill, so they forged forward.

    2. Cytotoxic   9 years ago

But a government takeover requires money that just isn't there. Vermont couldn't maintain single-payer so I doubt the USG will.

    3. Cytotoxic   9 years ago
