  The Republican Party convention has officially kicked off today in Cleveland. There have been sightings of people openly carrying as Ohio law permits. Politico is reporting that the "Never Trump" crowd has enough delegates to force a floor vote on the convention's rules, but GOP leadership appears to be ignoring it. The Colorado delegation has reportedly walked out. Reason has correspondents all up in the place, so keep an eye out for coverage throughout the week.

• Gov. Chris Christie is just fine, "relieved," even, with Donald Trump picking Gov. Mike Pence as his vice president instead of him. He's FINE, OKAY?
• Authorities say surveillance footage shows that Gavin Long, the man who fatally shot three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had specifically set up an ambush to target police.
• Another officer has been acquitted of all charges in connection with the death of Freddie Gray, who died in police custody last year.
• Following the failed coup attempt, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is looking to reinstate the country's death penalty and is asking the United States to extradite a Muslim cleric in the country he claims was responsible for the attempt.
• Rumor has it Roger Ailes will be booted out of his leadership of Fox News over sexual harassment claims.
• The Associated Press got their hands on a document showing that the restrictions negotiated on Iran's nuclear program will ease up in 11 to 13 years.
• I have absolutely no idea what is going on in this alleged feud between Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West, but I'm linking to it anyway because it's my job. My mom is pretty upset; she wanted the coup to succeed. She sadly announced she wouldn't be setting foot in Turkey again (the last time she was in Turkey was in 1978, so I take it as a bit of hyperbole).

My guess is that the guys behind it miscalculated how many in the military would run to their standard. Or they were betrayed by one of their number who turned coat and supported the government at a critical juncture. Or they really didn't want to come to power in a blood bath and were unwilling to slaughter the Erdogan supporters who answered his calls to go out in the streets and fight the military.

The thousands being arrested are probably mostly guys who had nothing to do with the actual plot, but were on some enemies list.

Haven't talked with any of my Turkish relatives; they've been off facebook. My family are firmly in the secularist camp, so I guess they're keeping their heads low (assuming they even have access to facebook).

The sheer number arrested in what amounts to a weekend's worth of mopping up, and the speed with which it was done makes me believe more and more that - if not outright staged - this coup was "encouraged" so that that asshole could finish his purges and seize ultimate power.

It would have to have been a spectacularly awful bit of coordination if it were genuine, as just about everyone came out to try to put a stop to it, even people who don't like the bastard. That probably signals a sort of maturation in their democratizing process as a society - which could have been something that a genuine coup miscalculated on - but the aftermath most certainly will NOT be good for the democratizing process of the civil and military institutions.

This sucks. I have no idea on the status of my former friends/colleagues over there, most of whom are based in Ankara most of the time. Thankfully, none of my stateside former colleagues were over there.

I got married. Had a lovely familymoon with the kids and the wife. We went to Florida for a week. My son was injured by a live clam that "bit" his shin, he thought it pretty cool. A pair of dolphins surfaced in front of our sail boat, swam underneath us and surfaced behind us. An alligator violently snapped up a fish and broached about 15 feet away while we waited to board an airboat in the everglades. My kids decided that they liked gator meat (although I think it was more that at that age they like anything deep-fried). We swam about four hours a day, and we all got minor to major sunburns.

Hey Baltimore/Washington area Reasonoids, My wife and I have finally decided that the cost of living in Massachusetts is just too high to survive with 4 kids here (combined income well into the top 10% and we still can't make ends meet while living fairly austere lifestyle and carrying relatively little debt). However because I work in IT (Software QA/Test Automation/Performance Testing with 20 years experience to be exact) we need to be somewhere with a lot of work in that sector. So this weekend we just signed a lease on a place on Kent Island and now I'm looking for work in that area.

Anyone have any leads?

Also anything else I should know about living in that area (don't bother telling me about the Commute, I know what I'm getting into there but coming from Boston it isn't going to be anything worse than I am used to)?

Sorry hate to break it to you but Boston is More expensive because right now there is a critical housing shortage here that does not show any signs of letting up any time soon.

Right now I am living in a 1700 sq foot 4 br house in a blue collar suburb with a major opoid addition problem (one of the highest rates in the state) that has mediocre schools at best (they are decent for ordinary kids, weak at best for above average students, and an abomination for kids with special needs) and I am paying $2500 a month rent. Attempting to move into a town with actual good schools, well IF there were any houses available (and there aren't) I'd be paying $3500+ a month for that same 1700 sq ft 4 br home.

I just signed a lease on a 2200 sq ft 4 br luxury home in an upscale subdivision on Kent Island which has one of the top 3 or 4 school districts in the entire state of Maryland and is located on a prime vacation spot just over the bay bridge. Sure it means a 60 - 90 minute commute to get to jobs in either Baltimore or DC (and Dove DE is about the same time away) and the rent is $2500 a month and being in Boston I've had commutes that averaged 60 minutes or more for 3 of the 4 years I've lived here so that isn't anything new either.

Sorry, easier said than done. Most companies don't pay attention to you if you aren't local. Also my wife works 100% remote and I work 40% remote and my current company has an office in Reston that part of my team works out of. So far they haven't bitten on my transferring down there but I'm working on convincing them but I figure it doesn't hurt to look to see what else is available in the meantime.

We move in Mid August and should it be necessary I'll commute back and forth from Boston on a weekly basis till I can either transfer or find something else down there but the schools here are destroying my kids eduication so I'm moving them now before any more damage is done.
