Don't Believe Any Headline Showing Hillary Clinton with a 12-Point Lead over Donald Trump
Journalists are hyping poll results that look quite different when Gary Johnson is properly included

"A new poll shows Hillary Clinton with a 12 point lead over Donald Trump," trumpets ABC News Radio, hyping a broadcast of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Well, yes, but mostly no.
There is indeed a 51 percent to 39 percent advantage for Clinton over Trump in newly released Washington Post/ABC News poll, conducted from June 20-23. But that same survey also asked the same pool of voters to react to a far more representative ballot, i.e., one that includes Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson (who is widely expected to end up on the ballots of all 50 states), and the Green Party's Jill Stein, who is projected to wind up on as many as 47. Leaving Johnson and Stein off polls is bad science; electing to emphasize the numbers that exclude them is journalistic malpractice.
How do the numbers differ with or without the third-party candidates included? Here's the WashPost/ABC poll, with the first line the misleading Clinton-vs.-Trump matchup, and the second line better reflecting reality. OT = "other," NV = "not voting."
HC 51% DT 39% OT 2% NV 6%
HC 47% DT 37% OT 1% NV 0% GJ 7% JS 3%
So it's a 10-point lead, not a 12-point lead, and Clinton is not supported by a majority of voters. (In fact, this marks her high-water mark in any poll this season that has included Johnson and Stein; in all others, she has been between 39 percent and 44 percent.)
The split is even more dramatic with the other poll making news today, from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal:
HC 46% DT 41%
HC 39% DT 38 GJ% 10 JS 6%
And yet here is how numbers wizard Nate Silver reacted to this poll:
The bad news for Trump is that a poll showing him 5 points down is considered good news for Trump.
— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) June 26, 2016
That quip would read a lot differently if it were "The bad news for Trump is that a poll showing him 1 point down is considered good news for Trump," and yet the edited version is the more accurate one. (Silver, in other venues, has argued for Johnson to be included in polling, saying "it's not a pollster's job, in my view, to take that choice away from the voter when they'll have it on the ballot. They can always ask the question both ways, too — with Johnson and without.")
Such selective, inaccurate reading is not just the stuff of Twitter jokes. This is how the Wall Street Journal headlined its own damned poll: "Hillary Clinton Holds 5-Point Lead Over Donald Trump, Latest Poll Finds." Right, except when you include the names of the candidates who will actually be on the ballots. ABC News did the same with its survey: "Clinton Opens 12-Point Lead on Trump."
Well, just because some news organizations are elevating clickbait over accuracy doesn't mean the rest of us need play along. There have been, to my count, seven national polls over the last month that asked about all four candidates, and also provided results for just Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Before you read or share any headline about presidential polls, make sure you check to see whether they've included Johnson and/or Stein, and then keep this month-long average in mind:
HC 46% DT 38% OT 7% NV 5%
HC 42% DT 36% OT 2% NV 2% GJ 7% JS 5%
Notice the interesting symmetry in those numbers? Without the third-party candidates, "other" and "not voting" have 7 percent and 5 percent, respectively. Include them, and its Johnson and Stein who get 7 percent and 5 percent, while the number of voters feeling left out of the process plummets. And yes, the third-party challengers on net are drawing more from the Democrat.
The other thing that jumps out of the four-way polling is this: Clinton has yet to reach 50 percent when her proper competition is included, and Trump hasn't even cracked 40. It's early yet, and third-party support historically dwindles toward Election Day, but preliminarily the numbers illustrate what our gut already tells us: America is not enthusiastic about its major-party presidential choices.

Let's have a bunch of faithless electors and make this thing really interesting.
That's the only way Gary will get an electoral college vote. Also, why are we still paying attention to Nate Silver?

Too bad we aren't pushing over 10%
LP always polls higher than it gets votes come election day.
Oh, I know. I would like the debate to change, that's all.
My first priority is to do anything I can on Election Day to ensure Hillary Clinton does not receive WA state's electoral votes. After that my next priority is to get those electoral votes for GJ. However, if the math supports voting for Trump to deprive Hillary of those EVs, then so be it.
How many of those voters are going to wind up voting for one or the other half of TEAM BE RULED anyhow, fearing they'll "throw their vote away" otherwise?
ALL of the Bernie supporters. Especially the ones who swore they'd never vote for Hillary.
At least 15% will vote for Trump. Others will vote for Jill Stein.
Why is it so hard for us to accept what is obvious to 13 year old Canadians?

Sssh. You'll summon him.

I was not first.

I'm a part-time commenter too, but one reading this at the pub (it's the ghost town of non-shore Jersey).
I would make internet comments a full time thing, but the Kochs don't pay all that much.

Not so much a band name, but a potential album name.
On the map, Baby. On. The. Map.
Keeping both Team Stupid and Team Evil under 50% would be something of an accomplishment in of itself for Johnson and the Libertarian Party.
No matter what happens, the major party candidate will have a "mandate" to everyone in their corner, rest assured of that.

I don't believe headlines.
I'm currently exploring a theory that science headlines (in non-scientific publications) are always proven a lie by reading the last few paragraphs of the article.
I think you may be right. For verification, what is your standard for "last few paragraphs"??
There are also parallels here with the Brexit polling. Going from Leave being perpetually down to winning by a sizable margin suggests a systematic bias, potentially something akin to "social desirability bias."
The link you posted shows leave winning for most of June, and is 4% really a sizable margin?
The link you posted shows leave winning for most of June, and is 4% really a sizable margin?
11 days isn't most.
And yes, 4% is sizable in an election that could've come down to 1% or less. Sizable is, of course, relative. I didn't say massive blowout.
Allow me to move some goalposts, ahead or within the margin of error, also I don't think 19 people out of a thousand is sizable no matter how you slice it.
I'm ok with the goalpost repositioning for the sake of argument. The problem that comes up with MoEs sometimes (I'm not necessarily accusing you of this) is that people like to treat them as "anything within the MoE is equally likely," which is simply not the case.
So, if you will allow me to move the goalposts... I'd guess (don't feel like grabbing the ol' calculator right now) that the 52-48 Leave win was far enough outside of the running polling margins as to be a statistically unlikely sizable difference from the averages, thus my assertion that there may be some sort of systematic bias there.
I get what you're saying about the MoE,and I am no statistician, but aren't you assuming that the outcome was always gonna be 52-48, who knows? One, two, three months ago the results could have been very different. I simply don't think the polls were as horribly wrong as people are saying they had leave winning very close to the end, it's possible the tide turned late.
I don't disagree on any of that. I still say that a systematic bias seems likely given margin of victory vs. polling, overall. It's just a matter of how you look at it.
I would, however, argue that the media blitz leading up to the vote *should have* pushed people toward Remain. Pretty much all of the governmental and moneyed interests were pushing Remain. It was both heartening and interesting (again, I tend to think systematic bias in the polling) to see people resist that level of propaganda. It's hard to get 52% of people to agree to something when most of what they hear is "the sky is gonna fall if you do this."
The media blitz meant to push people to Remain likely backfired on at least some of the undecided ? plus it likely kept some Leave proponents from answering affirmatively to polls. At this rate, we'll discover that Trump wins a landslide where half his voters refuse even after the fact to admit that they voted for him (in opposition to paternalist media signaling).
Not half, but otherwise correct.
Election over 4 months away
But our need to speculate is right now.
If we don't speculate online, we're all going to be stuck talking to the actual humans around us!
Well, the lp does have some skin in the game. They need numbers soon, if they want the stage.
Yeah, I can see looking at GJ and the 15% number because of the debates but not splitting hairs over Clintins lead this early.
100%
Or the media and the voters and the viewers and the courts could persuade/force the debates to set a lower bar for inclusion, or move them to a different hosting body.
Social justice vs free speech
Seven people were taken to hospitals Sunday after violence broke out between a white supremacist group and counter-protesters, said authorities in Sacramento, California.
-------
Yvette Felarca, who said she was a member of the group By Any Means Necessary, told CNN she came out to let people know that racist and anti-immigrant viewpoints would not be tolerated.
"They're not welcome," she said of the TWP rally. "If they trip and fall in the process, good. We succeeded in shutting them down."
--------
Felarca complained that the TWP was allowed to protest at all.
"They never should have gotten a permit to begin with," she said. "The police were out here protecting them. One of our main chants is, 'Cops and Klan go hand in hand' because we know the police are out there to back them up."
No safe space for you.
These assholes deserve Trump.
So First Amendment now null and void in California? Would that not call for the Feds?
This is standard prog/cultural Marxist/Marcuse shit: free speech does not apply to reactionary elements.
the group By Any Means Necessary
They're doing the dirty work of the establishment. Plausible deniability.
They're not even people, if you think about it.
Oh, those California Nazis.
Thank god John Kerry is on the job. Whatever would the world do without his sage advice?
"Kerry urges UK and European Union to 'minimize disruption' from Brexit split"
Where has he been?
And did he say it with James Taylor playing softly in the background?
He spent Thursday explaining to entrepreneurs that the role of government is to "Get out of the way".
He was followed by Obama on Friday, who gave a speech about the "10 Ways Government Gets In Your Way In Order to (claim we) Help You"
Obama explained how the billions in market-distorting subsidies he was dumping into Green Energy Boondoggles were an awesome opportunity for people with the right political connections.
I hate it when I see a politician talk about entrepreneurship by selecting a 'committee' of people like Zuck'berg to make decisions on our behalf.
Fuck that shit. Entrepreneurship is bigger than such theater.
I yearn for a black swan to come in and play with this election good!
Mia Love isn't going to run, dude.
I love her. She is the awesome.
I looked her up. Interesting.
Don't give Beyonce any ideas. I'd bet the rent that she would beat Hillary OR Trump for the presidency.
Nuclear detonation in the Middle East.

Don't worry. You have nothing to fear.
Hawaii, which had the fewest gun deaths per capita of any state in 2015, already had some of the nation's strictest gun laws, including a requirement that all guns in the state be registered with local police.
"This is about our community's safety and responsible gun ownership. This system will better enable our law enforcement agencies to ensure the security of all Hawaii residents and visitors to our islands," said Hawaii Governor David Ige in a statement. He signed two other gun-control measures on the same day intended to prevent people convicted of sexual assault and people diagnosed with a significant mental disorder from owning guns.
In response to concerns that law-abiding citizens are being entered into a database for exercising their constitutional right, Maj. Richard Robinson from the Honolulu Police Department described the new law as providing essentially "an ongoing background check on firearm owners to determine their eligibility to own and possess a firearm," as CNN reported.
Rights are created, granted, and administered by the State, and don't you forget it.
"The District of Columbia, which had some of the most gun deaths per capita of any state in 2015, already had some of the nation's strictest gun laws..."
"Illinois, which had some of the most gun deaths per capita of any state in 2015, already had some of the nation's strictest gun laws..."
I could go on.
And on.
Statistics are only true when they fit The Narrative!!
So, perpetual background checks for perpetual safety?
Just as with Brexit polling vs actual voting, the elites have talked themselves into believing their own propaganda. The amount of media bias against guns is a terrific example. The very fact that half the households admit to random polls that they have guns contrasts sharply with the proggie claims that everyoneis in favor of gun control measures. Their continued stance that the NRA is an industry shill hoowdinking the proles is more indiciation that they so their best to deny reality.
The more they trumpet polls like this, the more I am convinced they are dead wrong.
This kind of elitist blindness is also what finally made me think about how useless government is. I finally realized that government has never done anything competently. They can't run the DMV or post office with any semblance of efficiency or concern for doing a good job. They continually enact more and more regultions to fix the problems caused by the previous set of regulations.
And the media cheer them on. One interesting aspect of watching movies and TV shows is when they show newspapers and have to fill in the rest of the page around the story they are highlighting. When you pause the video and look at those stories, it's incredible: New taxes, new laws, new regulations, and new scandals. Very seldom do they have any actual events, like earthquakes, tornadoes, ship sinkings, robberies, fires. It's all political, and all related to elites *doing something*.
The media live by government action. It's the only way to build brand loyalty. Any old rag can report crime, weather, etc; there's nothing there to distinguish one outlet from the others. But politics -- ah, there you can establish your own peculiar brand and tweak it and fiddle with it at will, so you remain a moving target for the other political brands, and this constant moral shuffling is all Progressives are good at.
Oh Christ more delusion.
American polls work, period. They've been pretty accurate for the primary season and there is no reason to believe they are wrong about what's going to happen in November.
The more comments I see like this, the clearer it becomes that many libertarians are completely out of touch with normal people or downright psychotic.
Except when polling doesn't work, it's basically lazy counting and its effectiveness is difficult to separate from lucky guesses in what are essential binary contests. Further if the polling reporting has been helping to skew the results, then it's predictive qualities are in question.
To even begin evaluating polling science in politics, the results would need to be kept secret until after voting. When a particular position is given premium advertising space in every major media outlet, it's moronic to assume this is science over leading.
You also gotta remember for you Canadians, following the 'official' position or procedure without question is in your national DNA. It's why you're all so into hockey, where any kind of outbursts of individuality are officially and safely sanctioned into silly, little slap fights. Want to talk predictive sociology? The more cowed a population the more into soccer they are, and let's face it, hockey is just soccer with skates.
The proglodytes see a conspiracy behind every common sense political position. To them, it isn't red state representatives accurately reflecting the will of red state voters that prevents more government gun control, it's the NRA bribing red state representatives to go against the will of the voters, as if career politicians don't know which way the wind blows back home.
Socialist Justice Workers at Raw Story tried to accuse Mike Rowe of teh sexism. Another case of lying in the headline, in a way.
Sexism is a dirty job that today's college grads certainly aren't going to do!
That was great, I could almost hear Patton refusing to contest the idea that he missed the target in the 1912 Olympics.
Brexit supporters are being told that they're racists and ignorant for voting the way they did, and that they don't understand the intricacies of global politics and global economics. Of course, it's the Labour Party telling them this, and today's headlines are screaming "LABOUR PARTY IN CRISIS!" So the experts in global politics are in a crisis because a long-anticipated vote went 52/48 instead of 48/52 BUT THEY SHOULD STILL BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY WITH IMPORTANT STUFF.
A dim flicker of understanding.
To gun control advocates, the numbers show the need for much stricter laws.
What seems clear is that simply having a law on the books will not necessarily have any significant effect.
No kidding.
So much this. In so many, many ways.
Speed limits. What are the actual deterrent effects? I'd love to see them, if indeed there are any. People give every appearance of not giving a tinker's damn about "the law"; they drive as fast as they feel comfortable with under the conditions. If that happens to be the speed limit, wonderful, but if not? WGAF.
Murder. Y'know, I bet there isn't a single person over the age of five in this blasted country that ISN'T aware it's against the law to murder someone, and that you'll get in big trouble for doing so. And yet we still have murders. Plenty of them.
Prohibition. War on Drugs. Child support laws. Labor laws. Pick the law, there are frequent instances, in America, today, of those laws being violated.
An excerpt from a letter written in 1891 by former Pine Ridge Indian agent Valentine T. McGillycuddy* reads in part:
Since 1891. Control is an illusion.

They were designed to clear farming land in a super-tropical environment. I find them useful for cutting small tree limbs and such down and processing them for the compost pile.

Again, where's the Constitution Party nominee, Darrell Castle, in these polls?
In 2012, only three parties got on a majority of the state ballots...Libertarians, Greens, and Constitution.
The Constitution Party is on the way to a similar achievement in 2016.

I'm hearing good things about this OT candidate. I hear he'll work well over 40 hours a week for you.

I'm trying to figure out if the ref got anything right.
I think he was harsh on both calls.
But they were playing really rough so his inexperience in handling it showed I think.
Both teams lack composure and discipline including the coaches.
Hell, even Messi's trying to con him.
I know. And they're still pushing him.
How do you fancy Spain v. Germany?
I don't see Italy beating Spain. Imagine that. They win the group and get rewarded with Spain. Belgium, who lost to Italy and finished second, got Hungary.
It was bloody nice to see Hungary do well. They were early masters of the game.
As a Germanophile my hands are tied. As it happens, I think they can beat Spain, too.
Oh yeah, Belgium got it easy - fuckers.
Germany too got a nice R16 draw though! Slovakia just wasn't up to the task of even challenging. I stopped watching at 2-0.
Belgium is growing. Nice team.
I think all the egos might get the best of them.
Shit, just saw who will ref the Italy-Spain game. Cakir. One of the weaker refs. I smell a controversial penalty somewhere.
This is fucking pathetic. I guess Reason is tired of having any credibility whatsoever so they've decided to go batshit insane like a demented slice of the commentariat.
Johnson is probably not going to pull those numbers. Hillary is dominating Trump, period.
http://thefederalist.com/2016/.....ing-trump/
Yes, yes of course... and Al Gore for the win!
*Yawn*
You don't get people to vote for your preferred candidate by telling everyone they will definitely loose. Look at Trump. You think he'd be where he is now if he straight-up admitted at the beginning that he had no chance of winning??
Don't Believe Any Headline Showing Hillary Clinton with a 12-Point Lead over Donald Trump
I don't.
Prediction: Gay Jay will, like 2012, not even break 1%.
Won't break 1%? I could break 1% against a criminal and a I-don't-WTF-it-is.
The Left lies. The Left controls the vast majority of Media.
Trump wins in a landslide
Your tears will be delicious.
Oh please, you Canadians aren't into tears, it's the boots that you guys like to lick.
Trump will win 55-37 and no one will admit to voting for him
So after all of this, where does this show the Libertarian party winning?
Real winning, not some "lesser of two evils is still evil" claptrap.
And show your past victories with subsequent national policy changes.
What? Jesse Ventura?
Obviously, Clinton still has a decided advantage. Many of the voters who choose Johnson in a poll, will vote for Clinton in the general.
Not if they stay home. Trump supporters are going to vote.

RE: Don't Believe Any Headline Showing Hillary Clinton with a 12-Point Lead over Donald Trump
We are indeed fortunate to have to of the most wonderful candidates to ever run for the White House Dascha.
First is Trump the Grump. Can anyone think of a better fascist to run than him? He will put a fence around our southern border to make sure those who are suffering from the failures of socialism do not come into our country and enjoy the benefits of capitalism. I'm sure next he will erode our civil rights and liberties in the name of national security and make sure we are all properly enslaved through more laws, rules and regulations our lives. Everyone must provide their own brown shirts and jackboots.
The second candidate is Heil Hitlary. Finally we can have a true socialist sociopath whose egos recognizes no limits and will accelerate The People's Revolution so we can all finally enjoys the benefits of a Stalinist slave state. She will enact the proven wise and beneficial economic polices that Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela enjoy today. From there, like her fascist friend Trump, she will prudently suffocate all opposition and jail those who are foolish enough to oppose her, her excellent polices on foreign affairs, the economy, domestic issues, etc. Yes, life will be wonderful in our socialist slave state, and everyone will agree on that.
Bring your own hammer, sickle and red paint.

Third party support dwindles near election day because after months of not hearing about the third party choices in the news, voters fear they will "wasting their votes" if they don't vote for one of the supposed top two candidates.
