British Labour Party MP Jo Cox, 41, died after being shot and stabbed on the street by a 52-year-old man. She was known for her activism in support of Syrian refugees. Media outlets quote witnesses saying the man yelled "Britain First!' when he attacked her.

  • President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have arrived in Orlando to meet with families of the victims of Sunday's deadly shootings.
  • Shooter Omar Mateen prior to his rampage posted on Facebook for America and Russia to stop "bombing the Islamic state" and promised there would be more attacks from ISIS on the United States. Here is a timeline of how the shooting played out.
  • There will be votes on more gun control proposals, but it doesn't appear as though any legislation has enough agreement to pass the Senate.
  • The cockpit recorder for EgyptAir Flight 804 has been found. The plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea May during a flight from Paris to Cairo, killing 66.
  • Encryption is the subject of another debate in Washington, even though, again, there's no sign that encryption played any role in the failure to prevent the violence in Orlando.
  • Donald Trump is possibly considering starting his own media business.
  • Philadelphia has passed a soda tax.

I don't even know why I thought that Anderson Cooper was somewhat better than the rest of the hacks.

Anderson Cooper's bullying of same-sex marriage opponents isn't tough journalism but an example of media cowardice in the face of Islamist violence.

And yet even in this context of pious displacement of reality, CNN's Anderson Cooper stands out. On Tuesday, he "absolutely grilled" Florida attorney general Pam Bondi. Her crime? She was helping victims of the terrorism, even though she had defended Florida voters in litigation against redefining marriage to include same-sex couples. Florida's very constitution defined marriage as the union of man and woman, and she wrote court briefs explaining the harm caused by redefining marriage into something else.

    1. Shirley Knott   9 years ago

      Really.
Why isn't he grilling John Kerry about the new antiterrorism agreement with Saudi Arabia -- a country that considers homosexuality a death penalty offense, and who support Al Qaeda in Syria?

    4. Catatafish & Woodchips   9 years ago

Because it is utterly inconceivable that a human being can simultaneously be opposed to the redefining of millenia-old social constructs AND outright murder of those wanting to redefine it.

I used to think Cooper was pretty decent as well. I'm not sure if this is more ignorant or repugnant.

      1. Homple   9 years ago

Gloria Vanderbilt's live gay son giggled the word "teabaggers" live on air when reporting on the early days of the tea party agitation. Piece of work.

      2. Derp-o-Matic 5000   9 years ago

It's the Left's projection. It was the same way with that one professor who fears gun-rights-supporters are all psychotic murders just a hair-trigger away from shooting up anyone who disagrees with them.

They have all of these sick, violent fantasies about people who don't share their politics and assume everyone else must feel the same way. Scary, when you really think about it, but explains a lot.

    5. Grand Moff Serious Man   9 years ago

The fact the shooter was a Muslim has really fried their brains with cognitive dissonance. I mean they just know that deep down every Christian who clings to a traditional religious definition of marriage is just as murderous and bloodthirsty as Mateen .

      1. John   9 years ago

I would like to know what they think they are accomplishing besides giving people more reason to resent Muslims. A Muslim does something horrible in the name of his religion and the media immediately blames Christians and non Muslims for the act. Doesn't telling people they are going to be blamed for the acts of another group pretty much guarantee they are going to resent that group?

If your boss walked in tomorrow and said "Grand Moff, Jim stole some money from the office coffee fund, I am going to have give you a reprimand for creating the climate that encouraged him to do it", wouldn't that make you hate Jim? It sure as hell wouldn't make you like him.

        1. This Machine   9 years ago

It'd make me hate my boss, that's for sure.

          1. John   9 years ago

            Yes it would.

          2. Libertarian   9 years ago

It would make me wonder why my boss is calling me "Grand Moff", that's for sure.

            1. The Fusionist   9 years ago

              That's enough, Libertarian, release him!

        2. Mr. Flanders   9 years ago

It would only make me hate Jim if Jim figured out that he can steal with impunity and starts to do it on a regular basis, with me getting in trouble each time.

Oh, I see your point now...

        3. Catatafish & Woodchips   9 years ago

Mollie Hemingway had a good article today that absolutely excoriates Cooper and his ilk for doing this among other things.

          1. John   9 years ago

Mollie is a little chunky but pretty cute and apparently is a lot of fun in the sack if her interview with Ann Marie Cox in the NYT is to be believed.

I think people should be positive about sex because it is such a positive thing! When you do things that are wrong, when you abuse the relationship or use it for power, it causes so much damage. It's important that people think about sex, and how to do it, and how to do it right.

            http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/12/mag......html?_r=0

            1. R C Dean   9 years ago

Maybe. Sounds like her sex has to be super-thinky and political, to me.

      2. BigT   9 years ago

    6. paranoid android   9 years ago

I don't know anything about Pam Bondi--other than that I saw a picture of her once and thought I'd very much like to sit for her bar exam, if you know what I mean--but isn't defending the state's constitution, regardless of her personal feelings about what it says, kind of her job?

      1. RBS   9 years ago

Kind of depends on which image you click on.

      2. Brett L   9 years ago

Pam Bondi is about par for a state-wide politician in FL, by which I mean, I expect her to have no soul, fewer principles, and an animal cunning rather than a broad intelligence. People who expect more than that will be disappointed.

        1. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

I have it on good authority, Brett, she is fond of patchouli...

Orlando gunman checked to see if his massacre was trending on Facebook and posted raging anti-America messages DURING his nightclub slaughter

Sen Ron Johnson, chairman of the committee, said his staff had uncovered five Facebook accounts operated by Mateen.

One account had a post pledging his allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, also writing 'America and Russia stop bombing the Islamic state' and 'may Allah accept me'.

Staff also learned that Mateen used Facebook to search for information on the San Bernardino shooters just two days before the attack on Pulse.

He also searched 'Baghdadi Speech' and searched for specific law enforcement offices.

Alex Epstein has published a lovely little note in Forbes expounding on his "fuck you" to Maura Healey.

First the Government Went After ExxonMobil. Now They're Going After Me.

So I wrote the Attorney General a three-word response that is not appropriate for a family publication. See it here.

That is all she deserved but it's worth elaborating on some of the legal, moral, and scientific questions involved, particularly since the word "fraud" has been thrown around.

The government has no right to demand a single email of mine or Exxon's unless it has evidence that we are committing fraud by concealing or fabricating evidence. In the case of the climate impact of CO2, this is impossible?because all the evidence about CO2 and climate is in the public domain, largely collected and disseminated by government agencies or government-funded educational institutions.

What ExxonMobil is being prosecuted for is expressing an *opinion* about the evidence that the government disagrees with. Or, in the case of the #ExxonKnew meme, they are being prosecuted for failing to express an opinion the government agrees with.

      2. tarran   9 years ago

        He's not going to jail.

If you read the emails that the CEI published after getting them from GMU through an FOIA request, the activists calling for RICO are so delusional that they believe there must be a well funded fossil fuel conspiracy fighting them. After all, they are well funded - very well funded! - from a mixture of government grants and money coming from Green slush funds like the one maintained by the Tides foundation. And yet all their money isn't moving people to support impoverishing themselves. They really don't understand that in this day and age, a scientist who analyzes public data can operate on a shoestring, and all their activism created was a hardy breed of scientist who doesn't have a sophisticated supply chain.

They hope to find evidence of this shadowy network that they reason must exist. They don't intend to prosecute anyone! They just want the fossil fuel companies to knuckle under and give them money like the tobacco companies give to anti-smoking activists.

What they don't understand is that there is no shadowy network.

They'll never find evidence for a conspiracy that just does not exist.

    Helicopter money!

    Warning: auto-play video

"It is something that one might legitimately consider," Yellen said Wednesday. It was her most explicit comment as Fed Chair on the subject.

Helicopter money was first introduced in 1969 as a concept by Friedman. Here's the idea: the Fed would essentially write a huge check to the U.S. Treasury office, which would then send tax rebates (translation: cash) to millions of Americans.

NYPD trying to find cop who gave Brancato 'get out of jail' card

The NYPD has launched an official investigation to smoke out the lieutenant who offered Lillo Brancato ? the actor who did time for his role in the murder of a cop ? his union's "courtesy" card, which holders have been known to use to get out of jams.

As The Post reported, five officers hobnobbed with Brancato at the premiere of "Back in the Day," his first feature movie since being released after eight years in prison for a 2005 bungled burglary during which his accomplice, Steven Armento, fatally shot Officer Daniel Enchautegui.

At the premiere, the lieutenant even offered Brancato what's known as a "get-out-of-jail free card." Now a Manhattan-based investigation unit is "trying to identify" the officers involved, according to an NYPD source.

    1. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

Besides, if masculinity is defined by the power to commit violence on a wide scale, I proudly choose femininity. At one time, "being a man" meant standing up for what you believe in -- and against injustice. By that definition, we need more real men in power taking on bullies like the NRA, which seeks to bolster the Second Amendment by shutting down opponents' right to the First. We can't even debate guns in this country, thanks to the gun lobby.

John McCain: Obama is 'directly responsible' for Orlando attack

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the elder Republican statesman, said President Obama was "directly responsible" for the terror attack in Orlando due to his failure to combat the rise of the Islamic State terror group.

McCain answered the question about the gun debate by citing Obama's culpability for the attack through his foreign policy: "Barack Obama is directly responsible for it, because when he pulled everybody out of Iraq, al-Qaeda went to Syria, became ISIS, and ISIS is what it is today thanks to Barack Obama's failures," McCain said.

New Weight-Loss Device Sucks Food Directly Out of Your Stomach

Though it bears some resemblance to a Tim and Eric sketch, the AspireAssist is a very real medical device, approved by the FDA for installation in people 22 or older "with a body mass index of 35 to 55, and who have failed to achieve and maintain weight loss through non-surgical weight-loss therapy." It allows patients to drain predigested food from their stomachs into a nearby toilet.

Installing the AspireAssist starts with surgeon making a hole in the abdomen. It's a bit like a colostomy, but instead of poking a portion of the stomach through the skin, a tube is installed connecting the stomach to a "skinport" outside the body. According to the manufacturer, the procedure takes only 15 minutes, and the whole device can be removed in 10.

Shortly after eating, patients are supposed to connect the skinport to an outboard device and a bag of water. It goes like this:

    Open valve
    Drain food into toilet
Force water back into the stomach
Repeat for five to ten minutes until "up to 30% of your meal" is gone

    1. Eternal Blue Sky   9 years ago

How Climate Change Could Make the Ground Collapse

The world may need to get ready for more megaslumps.

A slump occurs when permafrost, or frozen ground, thaws and collapses. Most are between two and 20 meters deep, according to Julian Murton, a geologist who studies slumps. But some are much bigger ? slumps more than 25 meters deep are called megaslumps. One of these, the Batagaika crater in Siberia, was about 52 meters (170 feet) deep when Prof. Murton's team measured it in May. According to Motherboard, at least seven other craters, one of them more than half a mile in diameter, have appeared in the area.

Forgot to add the best part:

Protecting plant life may help prevent slumps ? plants on top of permafrost can keep it cool, Prof. Murton explained. The Batagaika crater developed after trees on the site were cut down.

But the best way to stop more craters from forming is also the most politically difficult: reducing carbon emissions to keep the ground from warming any more than it already has.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have arrived in Orlando to meet with families of the victims of Sunday's deadly shootings.

They're going to place a wreath made with all the failed 'sensible gun control' bills outside the night club which was, after all, a gun-free zone.

The cockpit recorder for EgyptAir Flight 804 has been found.

And will be promptly sold on eBay.

"Can you imagine losing your son or daughter to murder and having to meet with Obama and Biden as a result? "

I'd tell his thug guards to get their damned guns away from me - and see how Obozo responds.

      4. Agammamon   9 years ago

You know what would be amazing? If all these people simply declined to meet the fuckers.

    2. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

We need more sensible knife control laws!

Depends; did he actually stab, or merely slash? There is old timey precedent in Europe for banning knives with sharp points (which wouldn't have done much for the that Islamo-Mohammedan a few years back who had a penchant for hatchets and meat cleavers).

If Parliament is an a mood to get back to basics...

      1. paranoid android   9 years ago

90% of Britains want sharp-pointed weapons banned, but Parliament is in thrall to the dastardly NRA (National Rapier Association).

        1. Horatio   9 years ago

          "National Rapier Association"

          Fucking patriarchy

        2. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

Indeed, I heard the phrase, "Rapier Sharp Wit," in now a banned phrase. Triggering for the Anti-Pointies, and the Islamo-Mohammedans object after that Sexual Slavery Council House ring was exposed.

Look at this fucking guy: "Vox Writer: President Should Unilaterally Ban Everyone From Buying Guns"

    1. Brett L   9 years ago

You know how it is with the Juicebox Mafia: One type of President has too much power, the other type not nearly enough.

    2. John   9 years ago

Vox employs him and Yglesias. Could you imagine what their staff meetings must be like?

      1. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

Very, very sweaty. Yglesias is highly humid intolerant.

    3. Horatio   9 years ago

Whatever you paranoid gun nut paid NRA shill. We're just talking COMMON SENSE proposals that would SAVE AT LEAST ONE LIFE.

      1. Pay up, Palin's Buttplug!   9 years ago

And we will kill as many people as it takes to save at least one life!

    4. paranoid android   9 years ago

Oh my God. I am about 500% more confident in my own masculinity after seeing that picture.

      1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

I'm not Groovus, but no. Just 2 ugly parents.

              1. Groovus Maximus   9 years ago

No, not FAS, but let me ask my wife's opinion (for realzies) because I do see some congenital defects there. Just not immediately sure which one, since the differential DX overlap so much.

              2. Sir Digby Chicken Caesar   9 years ago

It looks like something got "mixed in" during conception.

Toxic waste. Everclear. (Ineffective) Spermicidal lubricant. DEET-based insect repellent.

                Take your pick.

Besides Terminal Butt-Ugly-Parentitis, like Playa surmised, PKU is a possibility.

Look at bacon-magic, sitting up in his ivory tower looking down at those of us who show our appreciation for a woman by wafting her upholstered scent. Life must be awfully nice up there.

            1. Horatio   9 years ago

And does her prettiness really factor here?

            2. bacon-magic   9 years ago

              Crusty,
I've seen your "woulds". My comment was obviously not for you. You have the same taste as John in women, you don't even need to smell the chair...you can smell them a mile away.

You're more masculine than that guy.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have arrived in Orlando to meet with families of the victims of Sunday's deadly shootings.

Haven't they been through enough agony?

  52. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

It's all becoming so clear now. I'm supposed to be guilty for supporting (and exercising) my 2nd amendment rights in the wake of the Orlando shooting.

Therefore I guess... I should have felt guilty about exercising my 1st amendment rights in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo shooting.

    1. John   9 years ago

Because a Muslim in Florida murdered 50 people in a gay bar, some gay guy in Oklahoma has to give up his AR 15.

      Its just common sense Paul.

      1. This Machine Chips Fascists   9 years ago

Sometimes you make a lot of sense.
        I'm stealing this.

Yes, Paul, unshackle yourself from your False Consciousness, and embrace The New Flesh!

      1. This Machine Chips Fascists   9 years ago

        Euphemism or phrasing?

    4. invisible finger   9 years ago

All I'm asking for is common sense legislation to put all Muslims in death camps.

Seriously, the idea that you're going to rid the country of Muslims is just as far fetched - and therefore not common sense - as the idea that you're going to rid the country of guns.

Yet the bulk of the populace take either Trump or Obama or Clinton or Sanders as serious leaders instead of the psychotics they are.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

        or Sanders

If we didn't have agricultural subsidies, the true cost of sodas would break more habits than a sugar tax.

I'm about to eat some GMO for right now, actually.

Ever notice how progressives play a duo-dip shit game where the Constitution is concerned? On one end, they want to upend and even erase parts of it (and let's face it, this is their end game) arrogantly claiming 'the FFs never foresaw society getting so complex' (universal laws of human nature are fixed but anyway let's not confuse the little remedial twirps) and dead white guys. Yet, on the flip side they claim 'Jefferson' or 'Madison' as their own and profess to understand 'what they meant' by today's standards. One popular way is to send out a meme with a FF and caption like:

President Should Unilaterally Ban Everyone From Buying Guns

Fucking laws- how do they work?

    1. Libertarian   9 years ago

There are too many people in this country that want a king (or a dictator). Should we tell them that they're going to be disappointed when that happens, or should we just let them figure it out by themselves?

      1. (((Renegade)))   9 years ago

But they won't. My FB feed is full of people who say that they'll actually be crying on the day that Cocoa and the Wookie leave the White House.

      2. invisible finger   9 years ago

They'll go the their death camps cursing capitalism until they draw their last breaths.

  57. The Late P Brooks   9 years ago

There are too many people in this country that want a king (or a dictator).

I think it goes even deeper than that. They want a Saviour.

    1. invisible finger   9 years ago

It doesn't go that deep. Too many people just don't want to grow up.

    2. Suthenboy   9 years ago

Government Frustration Story #3,284 (featuring the SEIU)

One of the prison nurses had a heated disagreement with her boss. The nurse used some "sick time" that day and went home early. After arriving at home, she called in and said she'd be on disability leave for a week. About a week and a half later, she arranged a meeting with her boss, her SEIU rep, the prison labor relations officer, and several other administrative officials. What I hear is that she just vented to everyone for two hours, then she announced that she was diagnosed with severe stress and would be off work for some unspecified period. On the way out, she was laughing and gleefully boasting to her co-workers about how long she might get to be off work with pay.

All over Ohio, taxpayers are having their paychecks taken to finance this.
