Johnson Rising! Libertarian Party Candidate Hits 12 Percent in New Fox Poll [UPDATED]
Other poll this week indicates he pulls more from Clinton than Trump. Fox poll shows him pulling 23 percent from independents, 18 percent from under-35s.
The Libertarian Party's presidential candidate Gary Johnson has long insisted that the presidential debates are key to his ticket's success. And getting into the debates, through the front door anyway, requires polling at 15 percent in five (as yet unnamed) reputable national polls.

He's inching closer to that goal with today's announcement of his highest even national poll total, with 12 percent from Fox.
He was only at 10 in their last presidential poll including him in May. Since that poll, Clinton stayed the same against him and Trump with 39 percent, while Trump fell from 42 percent to 36 percent. (In Utah, Johnson's currently polling at 16 percent.)
A NBC News|SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll from earlier this week found this, including not just Johnson as a generic symbol for "other" but also including the Green Party's Jill Stein:
Clinton holds a 4-point lead over Trump among registered voters, 48 percent to 44 percent…..
…in addition to asking the vote choice question with only Clinton and Trump as options, we also randomly tested two additional vote choice questions from June 2 through June 5 to better understand support for third party candidates.
In the first alternative, we asked about Clinton, Trump, Gary Johnson (the Libertarian) and Jill Stein (the Green Party candidate) as explicit options with their party affiliation. The results from this question among registered voters show Trump at 40 percent, Clinton at 39 percent, Johnson at 9 percent and Stein at 4 percent; 8 percent did not answer the question.
This shows that, between Johnson and Stein, they seem to take 9 percentage points from Clinton, and only 4 percentage points from Trump.
While Stein's presence complicates the question, if we even assume that all of her 4 came from Clinton, this still shows Johnson taking more from her electorate than he is from Trump's.
UPDATE: More fine-grained details from the complete poll, even more encouraging: Johnson pulling 23 percent from self-identified independents in the poll, and 18 percent for under-35s

Sure, a draft, but we're going to take that draft and give it to SugarFree to fix up. This play/musical/drama/tragecomedy is right up his alley!
Is that how Hillary's alley came to resemble that?
"Johnson this!"

Bump?
Hillary has this one in the bag. Johnson can't penetrate.
I think he's got the stamina to make it really hard for her.
Well, I suppose Johnson figures that he's the only 3rd party candidate with a chance of getting a seat at the CPD-sponsored debates. If so, he'll presumably soak up all the generic alienated, "I'm voting for a 3rd party" crowd.
Of course, the CPD is a tentacle of the Dem/Rep duopoly, and I doubt they'll want *any* 3rd party candidate.
Watch the definition of "reputable poll" get narrowed so that nothing showing 15% support for Johnson will count.
He doesn't have a chance at getting into the Ruling Party debates. The commission only exists because the Ruling Party was incensed at the League of Women Voters for inviting Ross Perot to make them all look like idiots.
If Gary gets 50% in the polls, they'll just cancel the debates altogether.
-jcr
LWV dropped out of the debates before the last 1988 debate. The CPD invited Perot because he was actually ahead of both Clinton/Bush in May 1992. Both campaigns viewed it as in their interest then. Now - the Dems have no interest in anything beyond two; the Reps - who knows? Trump probably doesn't mind another foil - and the neverTrump establishment may be OK with it too
If Gary got 50% in the polls, why should he participate in the debates?
If Trump knows Johnson's pulling more from the Democrat, he won't debate without him. So no debates this time?
I do hope he gets the polls to put him in the debates.
I doubt they will make it that easy.
Didn't rand get booted from a debate when he was polling ok, only to be put in when people started calling in?
Let me try posting this again.
The CPD is a tentacle of the duopoly. It won't want to admit 3rd parties to its precious debates.
Johnson probably figures that he's the only 3rd party candidate with a chance of getting into the CPD debates.
If that happens, then he can soak up the generic discontent of those who are disgusted by the Trumpery, but are vague about their options.
Johnson's appearance on the CPD forum will send the message that he's the only alternative to the two big parties.
Stein (Green) and Darrell Castle (Constitution) will be frozen out, and their potential voters will gravitate to Johnson.
If that works, Johnson is a true genius, though he would be doing what he accuses the duopoly of doing: Freezing out alternatives.
But what if his effort fails, and the CPD magically defines "responsible polls" to mean polls where he gets *under* 15%?
I see, it's just a delay in posting.
Stein voters would sooner crawl over broken glass than vote for Johnson, but otherwise, ^this.
Lol at thinking Darrell Castle has potential voters.
It seems that the Johnson campaign (being what it is) has stimulated a certain amount of voter interest. Unfortunately, the stiffening of support around Hillary Clinton came faster than even I would have imagined. I was amazed at how quickly the media practically forgot Sanders even existed.
Forgot who?
Some geriatric commie rat bastard who came within striking distance of being another George McGovern.
-jcr
Looks like someone's pulling the lever for Johnson.
the stiffening of support around Hillary Clinton came faster
Please, Diane -- Some folks are trying to eat.
Anyway, I still say Stossel should sponsor a debate and invite *all* candidates, including Johnson, Stein* and Castle.
If Hillary and Trump don't show up, Stossel should use his Fox connections to get a couple celebrities to make the case for the Democratic and Republican tickets. Preferably celebrities who are such attention whores that the campaign operatives won't be able to dissuade them from showing up. Because Trump and Hillary would be discouraging their supporters from "legitimizing these fringe parties."
But with big enough celebrities speaking for Trump/Hillary, and the other candidates responding, and with it being Fox and Stossel, there might be enough viewers to challenge the CPD's popularity.
One can dream.
*Assuming the Greens nominate her
Get a big enough audience, and the next Stossel debate, Trump and Hillary will be trying to get in, or at least maneuvering so that when they refuse to debate it's because of the other side's unreasonable demands, not because they're too scared to debate.
Clinton: I'll participate in the debate once Trump agrees to.
Trump: I'd love to participate. I mean I think it would be great, really great -- and I'd make a lot of money, a yuge amount, and we could give it all to charity. But -- and I mean it, it would be a great success -- I'm not going to do it, because I think the other candidates have been very unfair to me.
Johnson: I'll participate if I can light one up on stage.
Stein: How did I get here? What's going on?
Castle ditched, because he realized half of the country doesn't care about the Constitution anymore.
Very nice.
half?
Stossel should sponsor a debate and invite *all* candidates
Good idea.
The "I won't dignify that invitation with a response" replies would be priceless.
I could care less if Castle shows up. Now if he sends Beckett, I'll be watching attentively from my bunk.
Cool idea. But give Stossel a big enough production budget so that it won't look like the LP debate.
Darn, Stossel has a Johnson article in Reason today and he says nothing about hosting a debate.
And ask real questions this time.
pls stahp
I dare say Johnson may have legs.
This libertarian moment is sending a tingle up my leg!
"Did you have polio as a child?"
"No. Why do you ask?"
"Your middle leg is so short."
Do you see the way he walks?! My God is that good!
Just wait till the voters get to know Governor Johnson. He'll be back under 1% in no time!
He'll get single digits.
All this hype of 10%+ is laffable.
Perot got 19% against establishment candidates not hated nearly as much.
And his personality wasn't exactly brilliant.
I'm not holding my breath, but this could be a good year for someone like Johnson.
It all depends on a few things:
Does the media portray him as a serious candidate? Not much progress there, but better than any previous year so far.
Does he raise enough cash for national ads? All it takes is one SuperPAC.
Do the "major" polls include him in their polling? If so, is he the only additional candidate added?
I could easily see him getting to 15%, making the debates, and a threshold being crossed where independent voters say, "you know what, we do have a third choice this time, and he is more qualified and more reasonable and less crooked and less embarrassing than Trump or Clinton".
So Johnson gets to play the role of Charlie Brown, and the CPD gets to play the role of Lucy with the football. I smell a Bok cartoon. I can see the labels now....
I supposed this means I have to start answering the phone when the pollsters call.
Being from Minnesoda, I'm voting for Yonson and Veld.
Take your accordion music outside.
Ya, sure you are. Uff da.

Libertarians are very high tech, so it could have been a virtual orphan.
OT: Not sure if it's been posted here or not:
Cops go to wrong house, shoot home ownder
And, that's what matters most!
Well, at least it's not like the media are shameless boot lickers or anything like that.
Why is it that when the cops go to the wrong house they just happen to encounter someone who was aching for years to commit "suicide by cop," who ignores demands to put down his weapon?
I mean, here this guy was, sitting around all those years, just waiting for cops to come to his place by mistake, so he could incite them to kill him!
The guy was 63 years old, he grew up in an era when we didn't live in a police state. I'm sure he didn't know that not obeying is a death sentence.
There is no such thing as "the wrong house" given the irrelevancy of 5A .
4A. Damn, I'm sleepy this morning.
I'm sure everyone remembers this goldy:
Cops go to wrong house, flashbang a baby in a crib.

Hello Shreektard.
Obama admits Hillary is under criminal investigation
I'd imagine this has been linked to a few times today, but in case you missed it: Katie Couric didn't merely misdocument her interviewees' responses; her team may in fact have broken federal law in attempting to prove the law does not exist.
Either that, or she lied about the entire episode.
Why is it gun control advocates always end up making the case to oppose gun control?
The "she" in the second sentence is meant to refer to her subordinate, some mendacious, bootlicking prig named Stephanie Soechtig.
I had not, commodious, thanks for this.
W- wow. Holy shit these people are retarded. Thank goodness nobody with any political power is this stupid or blindly ideological.
Oh, and on that note: Remember David Gregory, The scumbag who used as a prop a banned "high-capacity" magazine> No charges were brought, although as it turns out, police at the time advocated he be arrested.
Who'd they advocate to? The police?
The DA.
To be fair, these laws shouldn't exist, and should be repealed.
Which is all the funnier, since they demonstrated that those laws do nothing but hamstring well-intentioned citizens.

Agreed - that's awful

He did. In 2011, I think.

Well?

I'm going with 6, it's far too on the nose.
Sitting in the bar, some old dumb ass is defending Trump. The other day, his buddy was arguing with him, saying that he liked Christie until he endorsed Trump.
Sigh. It's very hard not to go over and yell them to keep it down, because their stupid is giving me a headache. Maybe i should ask the (really cute) bar tender lady to turn up the jukebox, and I'll go play some Ministry, or something. I mean, I've already got a headache, why not listen to some post apocalyptic thrash?
You asked for it.
That is the most un- post apocalyptic thrash I've ever heard from Ministry. I was thinking "Jesus Built My Hotrod", or even better "Stigmata"
I know you were.
"Land of Rape and Honey" is a classic.
Stigmata from the album "The Land of Rape and Honey".
Fond memories of dancing to that in clubs...
Yeah, I used to love that shit. Anymore, it just gives me a headache, and makes me want to yell at kids to get off my lawn.
Still love it - hell I'm still listening to new electro/aggro shit. I just can't imagine trying to get my fatbody to dance to it anymore.
Yeah, if I wasn't buzzed, I'd link a to fat guy dancing".
You gotta go with She's Got A Cause!!
I almost did! There are a couple good tracks on that album but that's probably the worst of the bunch.
97% chance the cute bartender is pissed off about Bernie Sanders.
Doubtful. She's young compared to me, but she's not in her retard years, anymore. I'd do the Photobucket thing, but, well, that's a lot of work on a phone. Besides, she's s very nice young lady, and I don't want all you perverts "euphemizing" to her pic.
I can't count the number of bartender-esses I've fallen in love with.

Nothing but domestic. Not a place I'd recommend for the highbrow or late at night. Nice people, no pool table (right? I know!!!), good burgers and steak and walleye, but stay away from "Mexican food". Old crowd, I'm the youngster.
It's a convenient place along my commute.
Oh, place is called Night Shift Saloon, 225 and Peoria, NW corner Cornell and Peoria to be specific. Walleye is only available last Friday of the month, I think.
Doubt they have much web presence, but I haven't checked.
Also, in fairness, they have an eclectically stocked cooler. I believe they offer alcoholic root beer, among other things.
Shame about that pool table. I don't have an easy pit stop for my commute, unless I biked.
I just read the yelp reviews. And I can't argue. Wow, I need to get back to the west side.

LiPos are fairly volatile. They're just really, really great for power density. They're usually safe, but there are guidelines to follow and I imagine all of these cells are being made in China or somewhere else that doesn't really give a flying fuck if their customers combust.
I imagine all of these cells are being made in China or somewhere else that doesn't really give a flying fuck if their customers combust.
I'm guessing. Plus there's some modding going on to produce extra vape.
Yeah. If you exceed a certain threshold discharge rate, you're gonna have a bad time. I'm guessing the average vaper isn't doing the math first.
Actually they're terrible for power density. It's just that they're the best we have right now.
Relative to combustible fuels or nukes or antimatter or something? Sure. As far as consumer batteries go is what I meant.

I wouldn't necessarily bet on the idea that Johnson's taking more votes from Clinton - there's a good chance those are NeverTrumps who, given a choice between Trump and Clinton, would vote for Hillary but jump to Johnson if there's another option for voting against Trump. On no research whatsoever, I'd guess about 20% of voters are 100% all-the-time GOP voters and 20% all-the-time Democrat voters with the rest falling somewhere between almost always voting one way or the other and the truly independent who try to pick the best candidate regardless of party. If you figure maybe a quarter or so of the 100% all-the-time GOP voters actually draw the line at supporting a Democrat like Trump, there's 5% of the vote.
When push comes to shove, the neocons will vote for Clinton because Trump isn't aggressive enough and Johnson is a peacenik. The so-cons will vote for Trump because Clinton is a Clinton and Johnson is socially liberal. So that pretty much covers the "NeverTrump" crowd.
But a great number of reasonable people in the center could pick Johnson over Trump-Clinton, if he just crosses the viability threshold in the media.
I don't think the neo-cons do "protest votes." If they don't want Trump to win, they'll vote for Hillary -- they won't try to signal their displeasure by voting for Johnson.

Jesus - I think I just time-warped into some page formatting from 1994. What the hell year is this? Hello? If anybody can hear me, there's some Muslims planning to fly some planes into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 - this is not a joke, I'm serious. Oh, and Tom Brady's gonna cheat like a motherfucker in the playoffs but you probably already know that.
You must have hit that random glitch. I didn't get it today.
Those squirrels sure can take the air out of your commenting football right when you're about to kick it.
I swear I saw Brady cheat in the playoffs years earlier though. He was about to be sacked from behind, when without looking, he ducked, made the guy miss, and completed a TD pass. Just like he had a radio in his helmet and someone told him to duck.
Nah. The Patriots would never do anything fishy with the radios.
Dammit, Jerry, you're worried about football? Why don't you use your chance to warn the people of 1994 that their First Lady is going to win the presidency in 2016? Or that they should tune into ABC and watch the 2016 Republican candidate do an interview where he says:
"I love creating stars. And to a certain extent, I've done that with Ivana. To a certain extent, I've done that with Marla. And I like that," Trump told "Primetime Live" correspondent Nancy Collins in an interview that aired on March 10, 1994.
"Unfortunately, after they're a star, the fun is over for me," he continued. "It's like a creation process, it's almost like creating a building. It's pretty sad."
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics.....d=39537935
I'm surprised even 12% of registered voters have heard of Johnson.
They haven't, they just read it as "Gary OTHER".
If Johnson can appear in the debate, he might become this generation's Ross Perot. He's pulling 6% of the vote in some polls despite his near invisible status. That's impressive for a guy who didn't air any ads and wasn't invited to any late night talk shows. I was down on his boring personality, but in this election year of hyperbole, maybe that's a plus to some voters.
My vote in California doesn't count. I have every incentive to throw my vote away to Johnson. If he was a little stronger on religious liberty, I would be that much closer to voting for him.
But what I REALLY want him to do is defend free trade and economic liberty. Both parties are hijacked by populism and a "social justice" advocacy. On that debate stage he should be sole voice in defense of TPP and NAFTA.
That's a huge risk and will likely paint him as an (GOP) ideologue. But if you're being principled, why not go the distance?
"economic justice"
Please get this guy media training, better talking points writers, a style make-over, a better website, the whole production. Make him as slick and presidential as possible. The ticket works in theory as a serious alternative to Trump and Clinton. Don't let Gary Johnson fuck it up by being the pot smoker making weird faces in the debates.
In another story from Reason.com about Johnson:
"pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro-pot, pro-immigration Gary Johnson"
A true libertarian creed is a consistent "it's not for the state to regulate". By becoming pro-this, pro-that Johnson is moving dangerously close to statist social progressivism.
From the libertarian perspective, for example, an individual has every right to choose if he wants to do business with someone else, or not. Hence the litmus test of the wedding cake for gays: A conservative doesn't want to bake the cake. A progressive wants to bake the cake. A libertarian says: let every individual baker decide, do not get the state involved. Johnson has recently failed this test as a libertarian.

Support is beginning to build, but a lot of folks are still afraid that a non-vote for Trump translates into a vote for Clinton. Likewise, many don't want to vote for Hillary, but are afraid to hand any advantage to Donald.
We need to set them on to the "Vote Swap Initiative"; here, by partnering with a trusted opposite-party friend, one can make a pact that both will vote for a third-party candidate. There are some distinct advantages to be realized from this scheme, one being the possibility of shaking up the two-party system.

I'm sure all the women in this country is glad to hear that.
It's a good thing Gary's not running for prime minister of Australia.
That's the kind of statement that might rub strong libertarian non-interventionists the wrong way, though it's ambiguous:
Johnson is all for "humanitarian interventions". He likes the murderdroning too.
