SiriusXM Suspends Glenn Beck for Brad Thor's Comments on Trump; Brad Thor Responds to His Critics
Glenn Beck's radio show was suspended after a guest was accused of calling for Trump's assassination. The guest says his words were misconstrued.
SiriusXM announced today that it is suspending talk show host Glenn Beck for a week, following an interview last Wednesday in which a guest made comments that the company felt "may be reasonably construed by some to have been advocating harm against an individual currently running for office."
The guest was Brad Thor, a popular novelist with conservatarian politics. In his interview, Thor compared Donald Trump to a Latin American caudillo and suggested that Trump, if president, would suspend the Constitution and seize dictatorial powers. Then came the controversial part. "It is a hypothetical I am going to ask as a thriller writer," Thor said to Beck. "With the feckless, spineless Congress we have, who will stand in the way of Donald Trump overstepping his constitutional authority as president? If Congress won't remove him from office, what patriot will step up and do that—if, if, he oversteps his mandate as president? His constitutionally granted authority, I should say, as president. If he oversteps that, how do we get him out of office?" Thor added that he doesn't "think there is a legal means available. I think it will be a terrible, terrible position the American people will be in, to get Trump out of office, because you won't be able to do it through Congress."
Several people took this as a suggestion that someone should kill Trump, an interpretation Thor strenuously denies. "It's not a defense of assassination," he told Reason today. "I don't even want to see a dictatorial president assassinated. We are a republic—a nation of laws—and the greater good would be served by the despot standing trial." And if there's no trial? "Safeguarding the republic against a dictatorship is a topic of conversation that dates back to the Founders," he says. "If we had to unseat a president without the backing of the Congress, we would need a patriot along the lines of George Washington to lead the country from tyranny back to liberty."

My thoughts: I understand why people took the words "what patriot will step up and do that" as a casting call for an assassin, but it's also true that there are forms of extralegal political action that stop well short of the Oswald option. In any event, it's clear that Thor's scenario was set not on the current campaign trail but in a hypothetical future where a president is playing Perón.
If nothing else, this shows just how quickly American politics have been scrambled. If you said seven years ago that the Glenn Beck show would one day get into trouble for airing comments that were widely construed as a call to assassinate an American president, a lot of pundits would have nodded their heads sagely. But they might not have believed you if you added that the president in question would be a Republican denounced as a fascist by the same people who used to throw that sort of accusation at Glenn Beck.

I think Obama learned from Chavez, who openly said, "I disband Congress." Obama replaced that with, "I have a pen and a phone" and made his case to the people why he should just ignore Congress. Half the people never realized it was unconstitutional.
If this congress, which has been working to undermine Obama since his first day in office, are unwilling to actually start impeachment proceedings (which is funny with how often they threaten it), it might be safe to say that he hasn't actually committed any impeachable offenses.

I don't know how Glen Beck's show is structured, but it's a little strange that if say, Larry King were interviewing a public figure, and that public figure said something that crossed a line, that they'd suspend Larry King's show. I guess it's presumed that what's said on Glen Beck's show is endorsed by Beck?

If you invite someone in, be it to your house, to a party, or onto a radio program, you aren't saying you endorse and support everything they say or do. But as the host, there is a presumption of responsibility. In this case, they aren't suspending Beck because they necessarily believe he does (or doesn't) support the guy's statement, but because by inviting a guest that did that, and not sufficiently disavowing the guy, he showed poor judgement as a host.
And as he is hosting on *their* network, his poor judgement reflects poorly on *them*. So the discipline. "Do better, or we'll take away your platform".
To a degree it's censorship, sure, but it's also one of the arenas where that's acceptable. After all, why people have Freedom of Speech, they do not have Entitlement to a Radio Program.
It's overkill to suspend him but he should've seen this coming and disavowed the comment immediately. It's not surprising Sirius caved to people who were demanding his scalp.

They also explicitly were saying 'what would happen if X occurred.' If you say 'if Trump suspended the Constitution, we would have to do something extra-legal in order to remove him from power,' which is what they actually said, you are not just randomly calling for an assassination.

Consider if you invited a friend over to your house. Your friend gets drunk, pisses all over the bathroom floor, and falls asleep on your couch with his pants around his ankles. You may honestly be able to say "I didn't expect any of that", but you can bet that your (possibly hypothetical) wife/husband/significant other/roommate/dog will blame you for inviting them over int he first place.

I don't even thing Beck is getting an unplanned vacation. Sirius might be able to suspend him from satellite radio, but his terrestrial radio syndicator has not yet made any announcements, so I suspect the program will continue.

Sirius can be shut down in an hour by either Congress or the owner of the satellites that broadcast Sirius' programming. One phone call from a congress critter and Sirius' executives will need new underwear. Given this, how much worse would it be for them if Trump became president? Does anyone believe that Trump would hesitate to take revenge on a company that allowed the idea of assassinating a tyrant to be broadcast?

A few months ago Beck was accused of threatening to harm Trump...when in fact he was making a joke about beating up one of his co-hosts.
This was Sirius getting freaked out and jumping to conclusions without listening to the statement in its full context. I listen to Beck's show, and I knew Thor was not saying someone should go out and assassinate Trump -- what he was saying was that he was worried that Trump had dictatorial tendencies (which I think he does), might exercise them by suspending parts of the Constitution (unlikely, except maybe with regards to his claims about opening up libel laws), and the Republicans in Congress, just happy to have one of theirs back in the Oval Office, wouldn't stop him (I really hope not).
I don't think any President will out-and-out say "Yeah, we're doing away with the Constitution". Presidents will do like Obama and others before him and simply whittle away at the safeguards bit by bit until some years down the road it no longer exists as a functioning document. Isolated violations have happened for a long time, but the steady dismantling has been going on since Wickard v. Filburn.

Truman, FDR, Lincoln and Wilson all did this by declaring an emergency of one sort or another. If the purpose of the 2nd Amendment is "so that the People can overthrow oppressive government", then you need more then small and long arms. Until I see people talking about the right of private individuals to own tanks, SAM batteries, and Hellfire missiles, I can't take this interpretation seriously, because the people claiming it aren't taking it seriously.
This is so untrue.
The right of the second, at the time, was limited by reality to small arms, tanks didn't exist obviously. However, over the years, it was seen as encompassing the idea that the people should have access to those means which would provide them the ability to resist, not necessarily "invade" "occupy" or some other heavy lifting. Small arms have allowed people over the last hundred years to rise up against their governments even if they were, at first, outgunned. Syrian rebels started with small arms. Once an insurrection starts, larger arms will become available through various channels. But in order to start an insurrection small arms are a near necessity.
And a rebellious action against the state may not be full on war with jets like you seem to imply it must. It could simply be defending your home or land from an overreaching agent in slacks who also carries nothing more than a clipboard and a threat of force against your rights.
So until you would like to be intellectually honest and stop being obtuse... I will continue to discount your flaccid criticism of my right to my guns.
