Oberlin Students Want Below-Average Grades Abolished, Midterms Replaced with Conversations
'I literally am so tired of learning about Marx, when he did not include race in his discussion of the market!'

Oberlin College's activist community is ready to call it quits. Progressive students are dropping out of college, citing academic and emotional difficulties stemming from their mental health problems and overall disgust with the toxic culture on campus.
That's according to a fascinating piece for The New Yorker by Nathan Heller, who interviewed a number of exhausted activists at Oberlin. They perceive that other students, faculty members, and the administration are completely against them, and have made it impossible for them to live on campus. Some are dropping out.
Of course, some of these students probably feel unsupported because their impractical demands were not realized. Two examples: activist students not only wanted to abolish all grades below a 'C,' they also thought faculty members should proactively offer them alternatives to taking a written, in-class midterm exam. Here is the testimony of Megan Bautista, who identifies as an Afro-Latinx student:
Protest surged again in the fall of 2014, after the killing of Tamir Rice. "A lot of us worked alongside community members in Cleveland who were protesting. But we needed to organize on campus as well—it wasn't sustainable to keep driving forty minutes away. A lot of us started suffering academically." In 1970, Oberlin had modified its grading standards to accommodate activism around the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings, and Bautista had hoped for something similar. More than thirteen hundred students signed a petition calling for the college to eliminate any grade lower than a C for the semester, but to no avail. "Students felt really unsupported in their endeavors to engage with the world outside Oberlin," she told me.
If students take their activism more seriously than their classes, that's their choice. And certainly much good can come from an organized, aware, activist community on a college campus. But in some sense, doesn't school have to be about, well, learning? And measuring whether students are in fact learning?
And then there's this, from student Zakiya Acey:
"Because I'm dealing with having been arrested on campus, or having to deal with the things that my family are going through because of larger systems—having to deal with all of that, I can't produce the work that they want me to do. But I understand the material, and I can give it to you in different ways. There's professors who have openly been, like, 'Yeah, instead of, you know, writing out this midterm, come in to my office hours, and you can just speak it,' right? But that's not institutionalized. I have to find that professor."
Again, it's great that some professors are willing to make that accommodation, but should it be an institutionalized policy? Should we handicap professors' abilities to grade their students because some of those students think organizing and protesting is more important than class?
The students Heller interviewed seem to think they're not at college to be educated: they are at college to educate everyone else. As Jasmine Adams, a member of the black student union, put it:
"We're asking to be reflected in our education," Adams cuts in. "I literally am so tired of learning about Marx, when he did not include race in his discussion of the market!" She shrugs incredulously. "As a person who plans on returning to my community, I don't want to assimilate into middle-class values. I'm going home, back to the 'hood of Chicago, to be exactly who I was before I came to Oberlin."
While I share Adam's view that Marx is over-taught in college, I question her desire to leave college as a completely unchanged human being. You should change who you are, and what you think, in college. It's a transformative experience. That's the entire point. It's what you're paying for.

Note to self; never hire from Oberlin.
Just took exactly the same mental note - and I recruit interns most years.
My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
This is what I do?????? http://www.realcash44.com
Did you really need this article to know that?
Yeah, Oberlin was already blacklisted in my book.
The Mayor of Baltimore happens to be an Oberlin grad. No surprises there.
Also, Oberlin students should be subject to random beatings. Just because.
Beatings by chimps, with wiffle bats. While strung up by their toes.
Never hire anyone who attended adult day care.
My daughter went to Oberlin - it's only 50 mi from my house. It's not all the students, but definitely the crazies are running the asylum.
" You should change who you are, and what you think, in college. It's a transformative experience. That's the entire point. It's what your parents are paying $60k/yr for."
I know this is just in fun, but I have to respond a little seriously. The students are not all this flaky. There are a lot of musicians at Oberlin and so you have to expect some crazy politics. Like any other school, many of the students just laugh at this kind of silliness. My son graduated from Oberlin and he has worked at libertarian public interest organizations.
It's a numbers thing. Seems like it would just be efficient to use 'Attended Oberlin' as a filter, You might lose out on a few winners, but why risk winding up with one of the whack-jobs that has learned how to fake it through an interview?
I would imagine a better way to filter would be to eliminate anyone with a degree that had 'studies' in the title.
The music students aren't the protesting nuts here. They're busy practicing.
Robby, you have won the intertubes this day.
After reading the rest of the screed from whence that line came, i sort of think nobody's getting away a winner.
Oh, sure.
I just feel like Robby needs some positive reinforcement when he delivers us choice-nuggets of derp like that.
I know he didn't do that reporting himself, or even provide any particular snappy insight or humor to it, but merely mining that quote out and highlighting it provided me a warm-fuzzy giggle that will last all through lunch.
I thought this--actually written by Robby--
kinda negated the line he parroted.
I mean, think about it, THAT line came unironically out of his own head.
Its quoting the piece
'(The "x" signifies independence from overdetermined gender roles.)'
Then why use the term "Afro-Laninx" at all? Not using that or other similar term would therefore signify independence from overdetermined racial roles.
I would assume the term afro-latinx is designed to separate the enlightened from us evil racist, sexist, bigoted, everything-phobic types.
really? I thought it was a typo.
Why doesn't she just identify as Megan Bautista?
Latinx, sounds like something you'd use to unclog your toilet.

^This.
Nothing is more vicious than victim-group conflict spawned by intersectionality.
Sayre's law: In any dispute the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the issues at stake.
Which has been disproven by the global warming debate
And that is why Communism is so much better - its set up exactly the opposite.
Under capitalism, man exploits man.
Communism is the reverse.
It was funnier when I thought Robby had made it up. That someone actually said it... well, still funny but with a tinge of sad.
I thought that was a joke at first as well. Then it just became astounding.
Yeah, I first read that as a joke by Rico. Upon learning that it was actually said in earnest...well, I feel a bit guilty, like I just laughed at the retarded kid.
That's exactly what you did.
I feel a bit guilty, like I just laughed at the retarded kid.
I'm pretty sure you did.
"My dear student;
Please don't fret that Marx neglects to include race in his theory of the market. All you really need to take out of that study is that everywhere it has been tried Marxism has been an equal-opportunity disaster. To illustrate the point, we are no longer supplying your dorm with toilet paper."
I seriously doubt that Oberlin students possess the capability to use toilet paper, if provided.
I doubt they support treeicide. Trees have feelings too.
But, in short, I doubt that they even try and think about their waste elimination viz a viz hygiene. They know they're desecrating Mother Earth with each dump they take. They use corporal mortification on themselves by leaving their assholes dirty so they get all sore and itchy.
They use Venezuelan bolivars.
To illustrate the point, we are no longer supplying your dorm with toilet paper."
I'm pretty sure Oberlin also has co-op housing, which means they are getting daily lessons in communism sucking.
These poor, stupid, blinkered, stupid children.

A Roman girl with big hair.
I was going to say the product of a Carthaginian whore and Roman centurion.
One is reminded of a soliloquy performed by Dennis Hopper on the subject of Sicilians.
Yes. Great scene. For both Walken and Hopper.
But remember what happened to him as a result!
DONT TOUCH OUR HAIR!! WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS TOUCHING OUR HAIR?!?
That may be the weirdest subgenre of Internet screeds. And the most well-worn.
YOU ALL DO IT YOU KNOW YOU DO AND YOU NEED TO STOP RIGHT NOW BLACK HAIR IS NOT FOR TOUCHING
HOW MANY WAYS DO WE HAVE TO SAY IT I MEAN FOR THE LOVE OF MOTHERFUCKING CHRIST WHY DO YOU THINK HAIR IS NEEDING TO BE TOUCHED ALL THE TIME
Also, white people who blow your noses? Stop already. Do you have some illness? Then there is no need to blow your nose.
Picking is more efficient.
Fuck yeah. Don't waste nutrients.
Picking is more efficient.
And more entertaining for those who wager on it.
Or maybe a bottle brush.
OMG this is a thing?! *smdh*
This may be the most unintentionally hilarious thing I read today.
Bullshit. I'm beginning to think this phenomenon is some sort of delusion.
YES A WHITE DELUSION I MEAN WHY DO NEED TO TOUCH HAIR HAS NO ONE EVER EXPLAINED TO YOU THAT TOUCHING HAIR IS SO VERY VERY WRONG
Of course it's bullshit. Who the hell would just put their hands on someone else's hair?
YOU ACT LIKE YOU DONT KNOW? YOU HAIR TOUCHING FREAK YOU KNOW YOU DO IT ALL THE TIME AND THE SHIT HAS GOT TO STOP ALREADY ITS LIKE AN EPIDEMIC OF HAIR-TOUCHING MEETS A TSUNAMI OF PRIVILEGE

It has happened.
Back in 1975 my family visited Japan. My sister (eight years-old at that time) had very long golden blond hair. One day while taking the train in Tokyo, when it was very crowded and we were packed in like sardines, my sister whispered to my mother that someone had stroked her hair. It happened one other time during our trip there.

That's a Coates thing.
No, it's a thing Coates lifted from James Baldwin.
Coates lifted virtually everything he writes from James Baldwin.
Much to the chagrin of James Baldwin.
Did James Baldwin make millions of dollars on an open letter to his son, where he tells him that he'll always be a loser no matter what he does and it's not his fault?
Coates even took the open letter idea from Baldwin.
"Open Letter to My Sister, Angela Y. Davis"
Has anyone ever seen Coates and Baldwin together?
+1 Tony Manero
Who goes around touching people's hair?
Me. The world is but a giant game of Duck Duck Goose.
I just can't help myself. It's irresistible.
All white people, but particularly men, apparently. This is news to me.
You know Don Imus does.
+1 Nappy headed ho
Yeah, that can't be true. If anyone was doing it, I would think it would be other women. Like those obnoxious people who go around touching pregnant women. I've never seen a man do that.

I thought this was a Saturday Night Fever reference.

"As a person who plans on returning to my community, I don't want to assimilate into middle-class values."
I just can't grok this. I understand she probably thinks 'middle-class values' is some kind of vanilla white suburbaization, but... WTF?
Middle class values are the reason people are middle class - they don't get knocked up when they're not married and not ready, they get an education, start a career, try to save money...
People whine about income inequality and then glorify people who have values that guarantee they will always be poor. This person will be poor until the day she dies and she'll be blaming capitalists for poverty which was actually caused by left-wing political indoctrination and hatred of the very values that offer a path out of poverty
Because income inequality is a racist construct. Clearly everyone should just make $100,000 a year, regardless of whether they're working.
I guarantee the vast majority of "activists" would totally be cool with that. Yup, no unintended consequences there.
+14,000,000 Zimbabwean trillionaires.
It has literally nothing to do with being married and more to do with not being ready to have children. I'm tired of people speaking of marriage as some cure-all. The black community is in trouble because there's not enough marriage, etc. People identify a problem, but then mistakenly put forth magical Jesus marriages as the solution.
Really? Look at the statistical evidence. Marriage is not perfect but it's harder to get out of than a simple baby mama relationship. It requires a modicum of diligence and provides a basis for stability.
It has nothing to do with religion why marriages help people avoid those very pitfalls, and help children not become wards of the state.
there's really no reason to think that's the way the causality goes.
You don't understand it because they are speaking gibberish
this is what happens when you take an overdose of juvenile pretention and feed it just enough liberal-arts vocabulary to impress their friends, but not to pass a single actual course.
This is what happens when one is educated beyond their level of intelligence.
I've recently been contemplating what it actually means to belong to the middle class, and it seems to me that there are at least a few behaviors associated with it that don't relate directly to which income quintile you fall into. I'm not convinced that I would want to belong to the middle class either, and I grew up in suburbia.
I'm not convinced that I would want to belong to the middle class either,
Depends on what your alternative is, doesn't it?
Lowest quintile stoop labor? I'll take middle class.
One percenter life of luxury? No thanks to being middle class.
Well since those are my only alternatives I guess you have a poi--Hey wait a minute!
Unfortunately too many of the 1%ers don't live a "life of luxury." They live a life of messing with my life of moderate affluence.
Maybe those people shouldn't have a life anymore. Maybe.
You mean "affluenza" you racist shitlord!
Personally, I'd prefer to belong to the upper class, but my application keeps getting sent back.
Have you considered protesting? Maybe start a petition?
and those behaviors are?
Marriage, homeownership, debt-driven consumption, government subsidization of basically every financial move you make from cradle to grave. I'm still up in the air about procreation.
Finally someone else who recognizes the danger of the marital-industrial complex
Poe's law disclaimer: I am not being sarcastic
That's worth clarifying. The whole marriage licensing(!) regime has become so ingrained in the culture that I fear a lot of people don't see what a bizarre thing it is. They actually fight over who gets to do it.
We're, all of us, up in the air about you procreating, Hugh.
subsidization or interference?
I pay 48% of my income in taxes, including deductions and exclusions in the income tax calculations. I'm upper middle class. So I'm missing the part where the subsidies come in.
The middle class IS guided into the steel jaws of being a creditor on one side as they are goaded into sending their savings off to Wall Street, and being a debtor by holding a mortgage, but there's a huge Net payout in taxes by the middle class.
So, please, don't confuse extremely cross purposed meddling which completely confuses market signals for the middle class as some sort of support or transfer.
No there isn't. Basically the top two quintiles are net payers with the top quintile paying the lion's share. The 'true' middle class middle quintile operates at best at breakeven.
I just can't grok this.
What's the line? "Don't ask me to enact your labor", or something like that? I still don't get what it means.
It's the SJW version of linking to google search when people ask dumb questions, I think.
fucking GOALZ
#slacklivesmatter
Paging Swiss.
Nice!!
I'm just dumbfounded by this. Why would you want to go to college for 4-6 years only to leave EXACTLY the same as you went in? This is incomprehensible to me.
Because what you really want is validation and self-esteem reinforcement. You want your victim status reaffirmed and your ignorant arrogance rewarded.
Exactly. It's the reductio ad infinitum of the self-esteem movement in public K-8.
That's how progressivism works. If you're white, you have what you have because of white privelige and the victimization of others. If you're not white, you're a victim, and only have what you have because government is giving it to you.
FIFY
Yes. Thank you for clarifying that for me.
Bingo. You hit on all the points. When you're a victim, nothing you do is wrong. It's other people who need to change, not you. It's other people who need to pay money for stuff, not you. It's other people who need to have responsibility, not you---because you've been oppressed your whole life in a way they just can't understand.
We've rewarded and validated this kind of thinking in our society. Is it any wonder everyone's falling over each other over who's more oppressed?
She clearly already knows everything. She just needs the credential.
I think she means she doesn't want to "act white". I.e. the same phenomenon she was raised to despise all her life. Hell, she probably feels guilty for even being in college.
That's it, I think. There's a stigma perpetuated by some black people from all sorts of backgrounds that if you get an education, a white-collar job, and start doing things like being fiscally responsible that you're "inauthentic". I don't know where it came from, but it's like some people went so far into embracing stereotypes to defang them that they're now perpetuating those same stereotypes and reaffirming them.
The sad thing is, blacks were making steady progress the first half of the 20th century, solid homes, attaining a real level of erudition (in the good sense), making economic headway, then the Civil Rights Act was forced through by the victimhood shits and it blew it all up. All we got out of it is a few mush-mouthed congress critteres and Oprah Winfrey. Not much of a victory with the mass of black men in prision, the ones not in prison trying to stay ahead of the garnishment notices, women in the third generation of welfare torpidity, and an urban landscape filled with feral children. The problems are set to progress exponentially.
Ooops, sorry, More doom and gloom.
Brazil's got some more trees, so I'm happy.
It wasn't the Civil Rights Act, it was the war on poverty and ADC. Not being married and not working became a 'tolerable' and encouraged option.
Oberlin is a funny place to go to avoid acting white.
Oberlin is not funny in any way.
Because teenagers know everything, especially the elite going to Oberlin. They are going to college to teach the uninformed old fogies known as professors and administrators.
Because her Ethnic Studies Degree isn't worth the paper on which it is printed.
Something something... not selling out... mumble mumble... keepin' it real...

If you were to try and write this stuff into a novel it would be discredited as totally unrealistic.
I especially find it funny commuting 40 miles and then producing quality work is outside the scope of hear students. They might as well drop out of school then because chances are they will end up commuting if they want to work around a major metropolitan area.
""We're asking to be reflected in our education," Adams cuts in. "I literally am so tired of learning about Marx, when he did not include race in his discussion of the market!" She shrugs incredulously. "As a person who plans on returning to my community, I don't want to assimilate into middle-class values. I'm going home, back to the 'hood of Chicago, to be exactly who I was before I came to Oberlin.""
I went to college so I could return to inner city Chicago having learned nothing. That way, I can be just as poor as everyone else in inner city Chicago, but with tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Truly, the best way to improve the lot of black people is to make sure that even when black people do go to college, they purposefully don't learn anything and then just go back to the ghetto to be poor.
Leftists have done more damage to black people than the KKK
A comment by the Reverend Ike comes to mind: "The best thing you can do for the poor is to not be one of them."
- Lyndon Baines Johnson
Was that quote part of the HBO film about how LBJ single handedly got civil rights legislation passed?
"Leftists have done more damage to black people than the KKK"
In before "So Irish, you must like leftists"
So Irish, you must be an Oberlin Booster?
Leftists ARE the KKK.
There seem to be a lot of career baristas coming out of Oberlin these days.
Here is the testimony of Megan Bautista Barista
I wouldn't trust one of them to make my coffee. They would probably mess up my order, and they'd keep my change. When I asked for my change, they'd whine about my white privilege and how math is racist (and how coffee itself is cultural appropriation, so shut up, bigot!).
I doubt that, Baristas actually have to work, I doubt they would lower themselves to have to serve those who actually have to work for a living.
We need more like bernie, who got kicked out of a commune because he wouldn't work, then he found the perfect job to meet his experience, a senator in Congress.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVrEwCa8nSA
Good, the world needs ditch diggers, too. And baristas.
I'd not expect much quality from that particular ditch/latte.
True.
"I tried to run my car into your ditch and it flew clear out the other side!"
And it does shit for drainage too. Chock full of West Zikalaria virus. And crooked, but that was intentional as a protest against the cisheteronormative patriarchy.
But who's going to be my huckleberry?
I'll be your huckleberry.
In pace requiescat.
"I'm your huckleberry", is the correct quote.
This guy.
And in ten years these losers will expect the rest of us to pick up the tab for their student loans. Fuck them.
Well that certainly seems like assuming facts not in evidence.
Given that the history of such things is uniformly pretty bad, this smells like the usual lefty dodge when its pointed out that socialism always ends badly.
Indeed....
Then ask these self-proclaimed, "brightest, smartest, most astute, aware, technologically sophisticated, socially and environmentally conscious, generation EVAR," why they couldn't perform the mathematical calculations for how much their student loan would actually cost them.....
And their contingency plan should the FAIL miserably. Ergot, Berniebros & Berniebabes.

Progressive students are dropping out of college, citing academic and emotional difficulties stemming from their mental health problems and overall disgust with the toxic culture on campus.
I fail to see the problem.
They get to vote, and the law currently forbids forced sterilization.
But they made the campus better by leaving. The voting and the breeding would be a problem even if they hadn't.
'They get to vote, and law currently forbids forced euthanization'.
There. Fixed it for you.
But they could still vote.
As democrat voters, yes, they CAN vote posthumously. That is a problem.
They perceive that other students, faculty members, and the administration are completely against them, and have made it impossible for them to live on campus. Some are dropping out.
I'd say the system is working better than expected.
So in light of this we can expect to see a dramatic decrease in toxic culture on campuses?
Yeah, people who can't handle college probably should drop out. With the ridiculous grade inflation that already exists at most colleges, if you can't manage a C, you really shouldn't be there.
A grand majority of people attending colleges and universities shouldn't be there, but still many of them end up receiving their precious piece of paper.
Where are 5/17's PM links, Robby?
They are buried under the 50yd line at Giants Stadium.
The old taxpayer funded stadium or the new taxpayer funded stadium?
He was busy attending a protest against the appropriation of closeted leftard culture in alternative media. The 5/17 links were administered orally to Nick Gillespie.
These fucking euphemisms!
How is that "great", exactly?
I'm glad you questioned something, even if it contains a half-assed acceptance of the dumbass premise beforehand.
I have to find that professor
It's a pretty shitty policy. If you want to make sure the well-connected, the ass-kissers, and the chicks that are willing to put out for a prof get good grades, by all means abandon testing. If you want to allow the student who came from the wrong family, asked the wrong questions, asked too many questions, or didn't want to get on their knees and earn a grade fails, abandon testing.
Testing allows a degree of anonymity and objectivity that prevents the connected from getting a free pass and allows people that got poor grades to contest the grade.
Trust me - in a class where the professor allows that shit, no one gets a poor grade. That has 'Easy A' written all over it.
"Easy A" as long as you say the right things. Most of us would probably be kicked out of the class before we had a chance to fail it.
My lowest grade in law school came in a tax policy seminar class where the professor was both sharply left of and more vindictively petty than Krugman. I refused to play along and consistently received C+/B-'s on our weekly assignments. I suspect he would have outright failed me, but for the risk that I might complain to the university that I was being given a bad grade for my political views.
That class basically prevented me from graduating magna, and I still get mad every time I think about it.
Well, what was more important to you? Graduating magna or defending your principles in this one class?
That professor belongs on a blacklist, unable to find employment of any kind.
Seems to me that being able to write effectively is one of the most important things that everyone should learn at college.
And I've never had a big oral exam, but from what I hear, they can be pretty brutal. It will be funny if they get the oral midterms they want and find out that it is much harder.
In the case of most majors, the ability to write effectively is the only important thing you learn.
Yeah, that's sort of what I'm getting at. If you major in English or history or sociology and you don't learn to write reasonably well, you've really failed. It's probably most of the reason why college is a good idea for a lot of people even if they don't go into the field they major in.
I'd add "do calculus" as another essential skill everyone should graduate with, but apparently some people can't manage that.
In the case of most majors, they explicitly teach you to write ineffectively. Have you seen the indecipherable jargon-filled horse hooey that comes from college professors? How can you expect them to teach a skill that they don't possess themselves?
If you aren't in a STEM field or in business, you aren't learning how to communicate.
Have you ever communicated with an engineer? they can neither read nor write in English but instead are guided through life by a series of minders.
Speaking as a hiring manager I view a business BA as "I went to college" and nothing more as it's too general to be of any use.
What you need is a course to enable English majors to interpret "engineerese" for businesses.
I'd have signed up for it.
Oral exams are much more common in grad school and yes they can be pretty punishing because once a professor sees that you're weak in one area, he'll keep hammering you there (if he's a dick, which most university professors are at heart).
It only counts if the student finally runs sobbing hysterically from the room
I once saw a post-grad faint.
I hear their tears are delicious.
I flunked the shit out of my orals for history honors. I didn't even know it was a thing (and was kinda stoned at the time), so the first one was a disaster.
They let me retake it after a week. A week of frantically studying my notes for the last 3+ years.
OTOH, we had oral exams for my philosophy major that I also botched the scheduling for. I was blasted on mushrooms at the time, and passed with flying colors (if you know what I mean).
It is "great" that people who can't read or write are given the opportunity to [not] better themselves at college.
Oberlin is proof that we live in the best of all possible universes. Leibniz has the last laugh at long last.
Well that's retarded.
+1 Dr. Pangloss
It used to be a serious college. Now it is like some kind of Andy Kaufman long con. It just can't be real but it is.
I don't know if it ever was. It was always a place for utopian New England do-gooder types to stash their children. I guess back in 1830, when that meant admitting Negroes, it might have been a serious place.
The great historian Bruce Catton went to Oberlein. So at least one serious person went there.
Back then colleges were mostly places for the well-off to stash their children. And the New England do-gooders had much higher academic standards.
I have $150k reasons to hate Oberlin. But you guys don't have a clue what you are talking about.
The Music Conservatory is world class. They have lots of serious students. One couple I know each double majored in music and computer science - immediately got top jobs in Si valley.
Another Chem Eng I know returns every year to build violins - modeled after famous instruments.
The loonies are loud and numerous, but still a minority.
We are so screwed. How can you have a civilization with people like this? Can you imagine running a business with these kids as your employees? Imagine living in a town where these people ran the government or police force. We are done. I hate to admit it, but maybe ISIS has a point.
The likes of ISIS can only do harm to western civilization as long as people like these students are around to open the gates to them.
People like this make our civilization defenseless and frankly makes me wonder if it is worth saving.
eh, it's ultimately self-limiting behavior. When times get truly tough, these people will be the first to either get with it or die. They're able to act this way only because we are a wealthy society.
The only catch being that if they don't get with it, they make a take a few others with them.
And cause irreparable long-term harm in the process.
It is a terrible thing to say but in some ways some really hard times might be the only thing that fixes this country.

As with the feminist critique, the multiculturalist perspective has been ridiculed by right-wing critics, with a condescension that in some cases borders on racism. Colleges are way too easy today, which is one reason we wind up with this idiocy. Not enough people in the liberal arts have actual coursework they should be doing instead.
I was an econ major and remember an economics class where the professor only taught from slides he'd show during class. He would then upload the slides onto the internet so you didn't even have to go to class - you could just cram for tests using the slides he had online. The entire grade was based on 4 tests and you were allowed to drop your worst score.
I had a 97% going into the last test so I just didn't show up. No class should ever be that easy in a university and there are so many of them just like this that you don't actually have to try in order to get a college degree anymore. You can get drunk every night and never do homework and manage to get a degree.
I am really glad I went to college when I did and at a backwater. I was an economics major and it was old school. There were not any English majors in those classes. They dropped the basic econ class after a week and never saw the advanced ones. Economics can be a very rigorous subject that really teaches you how to think. It is really just applied mathematics. It is like a whole subject of story problems. But it can also just be a joke.
George Mason failed to teach me Economics through a feminist, queer, multiculturalist and ecological lens.
I was known for terrorizing one Econ prof's TA's (who wrote most of his tests) because they frequently had poorly constructed test questions, and tried to not give credit when I fixed their mistakes and correctly answered the questions. The more obtuse TA's resisted my corrections. It did not go well for them.
I was an Econ major as well, but it was focused in statistics, so I was spared most of the derp (the Poli Sci class I had to take was a different story, but I was smarter than the prof, so it worked out)
I also was lucky in that my advisor was from the University of Chicago and had studied under Friedman. We spent as much time studying Hayek as we did studying Keynes.
I was a history major. It was really, really difficult work. These people piss me off.
My history and philosophy profs (early '80s) were delighted to find out just what my limits were. The fuckers. 😉
In all honesty, after I got worked over by them (and they took an interest in me because I gave a shit), law school was really not that hard.
Medicine, overall, has been berry berry good to me. I recall my History electives (which were classfied under, "Block of Social Inquiry," as actually quite challenging, particularly those relating to medicine and accounts of how medical and surgical interventions developed over time. Sociology, on the other hand, was.... less than useful, all things being equal.
Also, my lovely wife, Dr. Zhena Groovova, thanks you perpetuity for your idea for a separate, Girl Cave bathroom (PATRIARCHY!!!!one!1), RBS!
She really, really loves it!
Haha, I'm glad I could help.
Groovus! When did you get back on the boards? We were really worried for a while.
Apparently rumors of his demise were exaggerated.
My first GF was a history major. She was specifically interested in European medieval history from the about the 15th century IIRC. She would read thousand-page tomes on the subject at about the same pace I would read the latest issue of Mad Magazine.
She had some academic friends and we were young and liked going to social events. Well, we were at a party and some nice looking guy in a tweed jacket sounded off to her about some current event and Hitler. I think his ball sack remains there to this day.
41 percent of all grades at the University of Arizona (God rest my alma mater's soul) are A's, and there's a huge portion of professors who ONLY GIVE OUT A's!!

'Yeah, instead of, you know, writing out this midterm, come in to my office hours, and you can just speak it,' right? But that's not institutionalized. I have to find that professor."
He doesn't seem to comprehend that this is maybe just a little unfair to other students. And I can't help but wonder if said student 'activist' doesn't have the writing skills necessary to be in the school in the first place, and is using this bullshit story as cover. The ability to construct a written argument is a skill, you dunce.
Frankly, it sounds made up.
Not these days. Look up any list of children's names in a local newspaper; like honor rolls, sports teams, class field trips. Those of us in the business have given up on proofing them.
"There's professors who have openly been, like, 'Yeah, instead of, you know, writing out this midterm, come in to my office hours, and you can just speak it,' right? But that's not institutionalized. I have to find that professor.""
I have to work in order to find a professor who insures that I can skate through life without any effort and that's just not fair
Why even bother to go to class at all. Just write a check and give them a diploma and be done with it.
Pomp and Circumstance, that's why.
+1 Wizard of Oz
But when would they have an opportunity to participate in organized action protesting whatever?
I had a professor in law school who let us do that. After the exam, to argue why a score should be higher. The catch was you could lose points for shitty reasoning at the meeting.
I kind of like that. If he was rigorous about it and really willing to lower the score of students who just whined or had stupid reasons, that is actually pretty cool.
"Yeah, I mean...it was still a crap paper."
Awesome
I'm sure there are plenty of professors who encourage "oral" exams in their private office.
"More than thirteen hundred students signed a petition calling for the college to eliminate any grade lower than a C for the semester, but to no avail."
So amazing. This story is one of the best things I've ever read
Wouldn't that make a C an F? An A would be tops, a B would be average, and a C would be below average.
Get rid of the C, then. What part of "no below-average grades" don't you understand?
Its like they heard Prairie Home Companion and didn't realize the line about "all the children are above average" was a frickin' joke.
Keep the C but grade on a true curve. Make them compete against each other and actually face some pressure to perform.
"MEAN SCORES AND AVERAGES ARE MEAN!!!..... AND RACIST!!!....AND (insert term here)-PHOBIC!!!! PATRIARCHY!!!!"
1300 students who thought they were failing one or more courses.
If I though I was getting a 'C' I'd have been pretty pissed - those guys should have circulated a counter proposal. But likely they were to fucking busy cramming to ensure they didn't end up with a 'D' or worse.
I had a high school English teacher who would only give A or B grades. If your work wasn't good enough for a B, you got an incomplete and had to keep working on it until it was worthy of at least a B- or you wouldn't get credit.
He did have to drop that plan for the remedial and non-college track classes, but I thought it was a good system. I'm going to guess that that wouldn't satisfy these people, though.
Bear in mind, Oberlin is a small school. about 2400 students outside the conservatory. It's plausible that the majority of the non-conservatory students signed the petition.
So even a liberal-arts curriculum at Oberlin is too hard for these people?
Remind me why leftists are smarter than conservatives?
Educated does not equal smarter.
Credentialed does not equal educated.
Leftists are more likely to go to college when they would be better served by learning a trade or doing something else.
Something else...you mean like jumping off the George Washington Bridge!
Whatever seems best.
"Because I'm dealing with having been arrested on campus, or having to deal with the things that my family are going through because of larger systems?having to deal with all of that, I can't produce the work that they want me to do."
I wonder if these idiots ever stop to marvel at how far humanity has come without such accommodations.
It's like, a farmer in the 14th century had to still plow the fields while literally dealing with like disease and insufficient access to dental care. I mean, wow.

Maybe you should avoid getting arrested while matriculating if it interferes with your ability to do work.
If you want to be an activist, maybe go somewhere where most of the people don't already agree with you. But I guess that might expose them to some actual risk.
Then . . . what was the point of spending all that time and money at Oberlin?
To get the credential. Which qualifies her to be a community organizer, and then the President.

To escape reality for a while and spend all her time marching around with signs while chanting.
Since she is presumably an underprivileged minority, she might be getting a full ride, so money doesn't really matter.
SJWs at Oberlin have been protesting for a year or two now trying to get the trustees to blow literally the entire endowment in a few years to enroll entire classes of blacks and Hispanics given full rides.
I don't have a daughter, by the grace of God, and don't relate to conundrum of, at once, loving her and getting her out of the house. So I kindof grok the problem, but I still don't get why a father would send his daughter to Oberlin. Best you weather the storm my friend.
Why anyone would send their kid to an insane asylum pretending to be a college is beyond me. At best, the kid would just ignore everything and come out the other side without being harmed too much. More likely, the would get inside the kid's head and take a normal human being and turn them into a neurotic hateful nut. There is no upside to going there.
It's funny, my sister was still basically normal when she got out of Oberlin. It wasn't until a couple years later, after working in China, that she came back to the US as a stereotypical angry lesbian raging about the patriarchy and racism and etc
After working in China, I had an even greater appreciation for capitalism and far less patience for turd wave feminism.
Unmentioned in Robby's piece =
What concerns me is not the derp, so much, but more the fact that this assistant professor can't seem to write a few clean, terse sentences in the English language. If you're going to rant about Zionist conspiracies, at least be concise.
The NY'r author suggests that the admin's reaction to this was sort of the 'straw that broke the camel's back' - forcing them to choose between the 'black community' and 'offended jews'. Slate covered that kerfuffle in detail here
Many of the new generation of professors seem to be selected for their bombast instead of their intellect. Maybe that's an outgrowth of blogging and what gets clicks, I don't know.
Concision? You know full well that people who write about Mossad conspiracies aren't going to write concisely. Do I have to post that Orwell essay for the 500th time?
Just do it. We all need reminders.

The first all-black women's team to win The 2014 Cross Examination Debate Association's national championship.
I despise that trend in debate. It represents everything wrong with modern discourse.
I've seen that before. We are truly doomed.
Here I thought an important component of formulating an argument was the ability to deliver the argument coherently. Not that it matters, if you listen and re-listen through the stuttering and yelling that is considered a debate "style", you'll hear that the argument (from the other debate team) is paraphrased as follows "Nigger, nigger, nigger! Aunt Jamima and Uncle Ben holding a rifle at the children. DONT SHOOT THE CHILDREN! Fried, chicken and watermelon. Nigger Nigger." He also threw in some Tupac lyrics at some point. Again that's not a direct quote, that's just what I was able to piece together from listening to the original video a dozen times trying to figure out what message was being so poorly conveyed. It's worth noting that the topic of debate was the 1979 Presidential War Powers Act.
I wonder if there's a transcript out there. What we have here is a collective delusion.
Collective delusion how? There's no transcript though, the stenographer killed himself well before the final round.
Here's a link to a video that apparently has the audio track muted and comments disabled due to the overwhelming negative criticism racism of the internets.
The participants in the debate competition are also the judges and rules enforcers. There are no penalties for breach of decorum or really any decorum at all. This is simply not debate as far as I understand it, but the system self-selected into it. I see it as delusion. Hell, it's not even a racial thing. It is simply Devo.
As I understand it, CEDA did away with most formal rules in order to promote "non-traditional" students and methods of argumentation. This was the result.
The participants in the debate competition are also the judges and rules enforcers.
Ah, well that answers several other questions I had.
Holy shit, what the fuck was that? And what's with the delivery? Have they got hiccups?
That's what debate teams do now?
Here's an article about this new "debate" style pioneered by CEDA. Trigger Warning: The Atlantic
Hacking Traditional College Debate's White-Privilege Problem
Minority participants aren't just debating resolutions?they're challenging the terms of the debate itself.
You see the problem with coherent arguments based on reason and evidence is that they're too white and boring or something.
My favorite bit
These "alternative-style" debaters have achieved success, too, taking top honors at national collegiate tournaments over the past few years.
So, they are the mainstream now. They no longer have an argument that everything is controlled by bullying whites. They win. How are they still claiming to be a minority?
The historical legacy of slavery will always be historical and always an immutable legacy. Forever and ever. Amen.
CEDA 2016: white people should kill themselves in order to atone for "white privilege".
So genocide is social justice done right. That didn't take long. Funny how the campus didn't instantly implode from this kind of rhetoric. Though it would have were it not a proposed genocide of white people.
Your first sentence is my exact reaction - what the living fuck was that??
This is complete and utter nonsense. And the speakers are barely comprehensible.
At least when Angela Davis spoke, her nonsense was comprehensible.
Older generations of black leaders made a special point of being well spoken and articulate. Is Martin Luther King some kind of race traitor now because he spoke "like a white person"?
Is Martin Luther King some kind of race traitor now because he spoke "like a white person"?
Yes. And let's not forget that he also called for treating people as individuals to be judged based on the content of their character, rather than by collectively by the color of their skin. That's heresy among the current generation.
Indeed.
Two of the most influential leaders of their day, Dr. Booker T. Washington, and W.E.B DuBois, didn't agree on much philosophically WRT how Black America was to progress and succeed at the time, but points where they *DID* intersect concerned mastery of spoken and written English, and overall appearance (B.T.W. *heavily* emphasized this and even personal hygiene, knowing that how one presents is as important as what one knows.)

If Robby put up an outrage of the day about Islamists day after day after day, we might call him a bigot.
What if he put up a story about black guys that way? E.g., another black guy committed a violent crime yesterday--will we ever learn? We might call that racist, right?
I've spent some time with some college students lately, and I'm convinced they're hypersensitive to racism and homophobia, they're a little reluctant to stand up for themselves, but that, otherwise, they get wasted, fuck like bunnies, stay up late, sometimes, talking about deep philosophical shit like it matters, and do all the other things college kids have been doing since the first university was established a thousand years ago.
Their taste in music sucks. But, you know, every time some hippie feminist chick at Northwestern says something stupid, it isn't necessarily indicative of a general decline in capitalism, justice, and individual rights, or that we've got trouble right here in River City.
Okay, look. I know you got a crocodile in spelling, but this has gone too far.
While I share Adam's view that Marx is over-taught in college,
I went to the school of hard knocks, so I haven't experienced any deep education on Marx, other than me reading literature from Marx and Marxists themselves.
So I'm going to wade into something I admit I have no experience with... but I suspect Marx is under-taught in college.
I could imagine, for example, a class called "Body Count: Marxism's built-in violence"
Exactly. They're not teaching the logical and demonstrated outcomes of implementing Marx's recommendations.
Marx 200: Why Venezuela Matters and how the west fails to learn from History.
I could do this all day.

Well, when you have academics commenting on discussion boards that Mao's big failing was that he lived a little too long and made mistakes.
I don't make my students memorize numbers but I make damn sure I tell them how many died under Stalin, Mao, & Pol Pot.
Yeah, but you cleverly fail to tell them how many have died under Capitalism. BIAS!
Real Marx is like real Keynes.
You know how some leftists cite Keynes as if he thought that sustainable economic growth is driven by frivolous overspending for eternity?
I disagree with Keynes. He's wrong. But Keynes was nowhere near as stupid as your average Tony makes him out to be.
Real Marx is like that.
Don't get me wrong, Marx is wrong, wrong, wrong on some really important things, and his work has been used to justify and perpetrate all manner of evil. But he's not stupid, and he has a lot of interesting things to say. Ideas like "creative destruction" come from Marx.
In fact, I think that's why liberal professors don't teach straight from Marx. It would be like teaching real Keynes--if you teach real Keynes, people are going to realize that Keynes never said that sustainable economic growth comes from soaking the rich and squandering it on anything. And if progressive college professors taught real Marx, then they would have to teach their students that Marx contradicts the progressive narrative in important ways.
I've always liked Marx as a critique of capitalism, and as a great way to gain some quality fresh perspective. But never for a second have I thought Marxism as a viable replacement of capitalism. Even Marx himself, in his later years especially, acknowledged the unparalleled power of capitalism.
Treat it as it should be: a great way to think outside the box for a minute and to contemplate the way of the world from another perspective. Then, go back to work pursuing your self interest.
I thought creative destruction came from Schumpeter.

Oral exams, done properly, are not an easier alternative to written exams. Ask anyone who has ever had to defend a thesis.
Personally, I don't see the problem provided that students are OK with it and professors have the option to keep using written exams if they so choose. I mean, you run the risk that some professors (or, let's be realistic, TAs) will show favoritism, but you see that in written exams as well where the written portion is in essay form.
Oral exams, done properly,
I think I see where you are going wrong.
Neither is multiple choice, if done right. I would give exams of mostly word problems involving calculations until one day the class complained that they'd rather multiple choice. The avg score on the word problems was about 80 (partial credit), but on the multiple choice it was about 70 because it's either right or it's wrong. We went back to the word problems the next exam.
I'd say they are a lot harder (heh). I've done oral boards (both as boarder and boardee) and they can be brutal the instant you misstep. At the slightest crack the board will start probing to expose the extent of your weakness.
With a written exam you have the luxury of time to consider the prepared questions and fill out your arguments - any questioning is not real-time (its written down and you have time to prepare answers) - with an oral exam you can be driven off your prepared path and have to provide answers off-the-cuff.
But I'm betting that these professors aren't set up for oral exams and the ones that offer that solution do it alone and go easy on the students because who wants to spend two or more hours grilling each one to learn how well they know the subject matter.
I read the rest of that - or most of it.
It is just sad. The writer went and talked to the 'activist' students and a few of the older (baby boomer) profs. The activists were probably smart people who might make something of themselves in a decade or two. But they've fallen in with a bad crowd and latched on to identity politics. They'll slowly learn that that shit don't put food on the table and no one gives a fuck about your feelings... and they've all got a bunch of student loan debt to add icying to their cake of victimhood.

The most absurd thing about this, I think, is that there is probably no place in the world more supportive of and agreeable to their social justice activism crap than Oberlin or some other similar schools.
Correct. Oberlin bends over backwards to accommodate all the possible complaints and discomforts of college students.
This simply shows that these people are just complaining because they like or need to complain. They are bitches.
The story quotes two activists who received full scholarships to elite high schools. They're almost certain on scholarship at Oberlin, so they don't have to worry about paying back student loans or the fact that they're not learning anything. If they demand Oberlin pay them for protesting -- I believe $8.52 an hour was the demand -- it's to pay for those fancy coffee drinks.
Heller does say many are dropping out. Why bother with classes when you already know it all by virtue of your victimhood?
I did wonder about the fuss over "intersectionality." Everybody deals with multiple issues. Is there more than that to it?
If they would bother reading the Reason comments pages, they would know that micheletjohson could help them earn up to 10x that much, and with little effort. Plenty of time for protesting that way!

And certainly much good can come from an organized, aware, activist community on a college campus.
To quote Wodehouse, "Name Twenty".
I'll settle for one, honestly.
Good? No, not really.
I mean, not that college activists are likely to be "aware" in any really meaningful sense, which I suppose is their only saving grace.
Much of the "privilege" of being a suburbanite comes from working 2 jobs or 50hrs/wk, painting your own house, saving instead of spending, not getting drunk too often, etc. It is easy as pie for a white person to blow it all and end up dead or in poverty, and I have friends from high school who didn't even live long enough to finish college and others who "inexplicably" are 60 and have no $. All that is "given" to most middle class people is values and habits conducive to success, not the success itself. Very few just get to take over daddy's big company and be rich from day 1. No one I know anyway.

Well this is just false. Having a wealthy businessman father who guarantees that you don't have to work a day in your life is the best part of being white. You're clearly doing it wrong. Every white person I've ever met does. And we use said business primarily as a means of othering minority groups because we don't want them to be successful.

I don't understand this. I went to college with a young lady all dreamy eyed over what was then called "affirmative action". Just Force the shoehorning in of downtrodden minorities, and - POOF! - in a generation or two everything would be wonderful. I am SHOCKED that such plans are apparently failing. I refused to play along and consistently received C+/B-'s on our weekly assignments. I suspect he would have outright failed me, but for the risk that I might complain to the university that I was being given a bad grade for my political views.
And certainly much good can come from an organized, aware, activist community on a college campus.
So Soavian. I knew it!
"I literally am so tired of learning about Marx, when he did not include race in his discussion of the market!"
Ha! I guess they didn't teach you the part about how horrifically anti-semitic Marx was.
Come on, people, where's the Lake Wobegon post?!? "...and all the children are above average"!
@Loise, you make $27h thats great going girl good for you! My story is that I quit working at shoprite to work online, seriously I couldn't be happier I work when I want and where I want. And with a little effort I easily bring in $35h and sometimes even as much as $85h?heres a good example of what i'm doing,

I literally am , so tired of learning about Marx when he did not include race in his discussion of the market!"
Somebody is paying tens of thousands of dollars per year so that one special snowflake can "go back to the hood" in Chicago without being changed.
ah, the wonders of America, where "oppressed" minorities can waste time and money going to a college to complain about how bad they have it in America. They are so "oppressed" that they feels they shouldn't even have to crack a book open.
That right there is the future of America, folks. Lazy, know-nothing, entitled brats who think that a college owes them a degree and the world owes them a living.
Besides being an ideological enforcer for the Progressive Theocracy, or saying "do you want fries with that?", just what kind of job could such a creature get?
community organizer??
The douchebag idiots could save a lot of time and money by skipping Oberlin entirely and just going straight to serving Ventes at Starbucks or piercing ears at the mall.
Start working at home with GOOGLE!YAHOO. ABCNEWS AND MORE GLOBAL SITES.It's by far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this 4 weeks past. I began this 7-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $97 per hour.

You are making that quote up.
You have to be.
You're not?
Well, RIP My Faith in Humanity.
