Mississippi Legalizes Daily Fantasy Sports
At least for the next year.

Daily fantasy sports leagues will be legal in Mississippi, at least for the next year.
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) signed Senate Bill 2541 into law last week. The new law will legalize daily fantasy sports operators such as Fan Duel and Draft Kings until July 2017, when the move will be reconsidered. The measure would create a task force charged with delivering to the governor by Oct. 15 its recommendations on regulations and fees.
Under the new law, which goes into effect July 1, employees of fantasy sports operators and their immediate families in Mississippi would be prohibited from playing in the daily leagues. Players will have to be 18, operating funds for the daily fantasy sports operator will have to be segregated from player funds and players could exclude themselves at any time.
In a daily fantasy sports league, players can draft a new team for daily and multi-day contests in such sports as football, basketball, baseball and golf. Daily fantasy sports differs from standard fantasy leagues, where players draft their teams once per season, set their lineups weekly or daily and can make roster changes or trades.
Both of the top daily fantasy sports operators, Fan Duel and Draft Kings, ceased operations in Mississippi in February after Mississippi attorney general Jim Hood (R) issued an opinion that daily fantasy sports constituted illegal gambling.
Draft Kings and Fan Duel saluted Bryant for signing the bill.
Fan Duel spokesperson Emily Bass said the legislature took a "deliberate and reasonable approach to legislating fantasy sports" and the company looked forward to working with the task force on regulating the practice.
Draft Kings spokesman Tim Sullivan said the company looked forward to returning to the state and "continuing to work with legislators in Jackson to establish a framework to allow the hundreds of thousands Mississippians who can continue to play the fantasy sports contests they love."
Both FanDuel and Draft Kings have ceased operations in nine states—Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New York and Washington—because of opinions issued by each state's attorney general that classified the practice as illegal gambling.
According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, the practice is growing as 56.8 million players participated in fantasy sports last year in the U.S. That's up from 12.6 million in 2005.

Bunch of damn redneck knuckle draggers. Don't they know you can't just let people do whatever they want to? In deep blue country, we're watching out for the safety of the little people here, protecting the children with a boot to your face, making progress.
This was legalized by straight, white, christian men, no doubt. Which means it is illegitimate and harmful on it's face, designed to further oppression, and probably a racist dog-whistle.
of course, it's racist. Any betting on football or basketball, collegiate or professional, must be since so many of the players are black. Probably baseball, too, with the Latino contingent.
I wonder if Hugh Freeze can get on those sites now and short his own team, since it looks like their playmakers are about to be busted. Or at least transfer once the cash flow shuts down.
Unfortunately, no, since Draft Kings and FanDuel both agreed to discontinue daily leagues for college sports, per NCAA request.

Key Mormon leader D. Todd Christofferson says religious freedom means prosperity -
"He referred to a 2014 study of 173 countries by researchers at Georgetown and BYU who found religious freedom is one of only three factors significantly associated with global economic growth....
""Everyone ? even those who aren't religious ? has a stake in protecting religious freedom for this reason," Elder Christofferson said.
"All should therefore be concerned about a rising tide of restrictions on religious freedom around the world, he said. Even Americans can no longer take for granted the existence of their broad religious freedom protections."
I doubt he can make the leap into generalizing that freedom to everybody for every reason. I call it self-control: the right, and the duty, to control yourself and your property. It's always fascinating what subset various politicians think is a natural God-given right, what is a right created by government, and what is not a right.

Authoritarian states suck.
Primitive religious cultures, of course, really suck (especially in a certain unnamed part of the world where they still execute blasphemers).
Ergo in the developed world we need more laws to restrict employers' ability to fire religious idiots who refuse to do their job.
Makes sense to me.
The new law will legalize daily fantasy sports operators such as Fan Duel and Draft Kings until July 2017, when the move will be reconsidered.
While it would be better if they gave some sort of metrics by which the reconsideration might be measured, damn if I couldn't get behind adopting this as a general rule. We're going to give this a try and if it doesn't work out we'll rethink the whole thing. Maybe give us some forecast of how this is expected to work and if it doesn't work out that way, into the trash it goes.
(Not that I don't know that the "threat" of a "temporary" program isn't going to be used a tool to solicit bribes on a regular basis from whatever cronies and leeches stand to benefit - why settle for soliciting bribes for passing a law one time when you can solicit bribes for passing the same law every year? Somebody coughed up some bucks to get this law passed and theyll be coughing up even more in July 2017 when the pols have a dollar-and-cents figure on exactly what it's worth to get the law re-authorized.)
Nope. Not 'we're going to give this a try' but 'its not our place to even worry about it until there's evidence that its a problem'.
The first leads to the 'you must ask permission' society.
There should be no 'its legal until . . . and then we'll re-evaluate'. There should simply be 'its not illegal so go ahead and do it if you want'.
You know, if they'd legalize internet poker, it may actually be worth living in Mississippi.
(from the things you never thought you'd say department).
At least you'd be fairly close to New Orleans.
"Religious freedom means the state is not overarching and in your face at all times. When religious freedom goes away, and there is no transcendent authority, there is only majority will. The law is the only norm, and the people in power now are always the only power."

There should be a law against quoting Meatloaf lyrics. We spend half our lives trying to erase the original trauma, then you go a trigger a massive-relapse.
One of his tours was apparently a bit of a horror show. Meat Loaf, old, fat, and hoarse, playacting that song with a very young and scantily dressed woman.
I grew up in the 80s, so as far as i was concerned, he was always these things.
I associate Meatloaf with all the worst things on earth; but mainly teenage drama-club types (*read: destined to discover themselves gay as they mature) insisting on 'sing alongs'. I believe it was also a bar-mitzvah staple
I confess = he partly redeemed himself (*but not his abominable music) in his performance in Fight Club.
I think perhaps you are a bit too young to have experienced the whole Rocky Horror midnight-show self-driven audience-participation festivities from the late 70's/early 80's, but Meatloaf's bit as an outlaw biker (pretty much just to sing Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul) was fun and a good rocking song. After Frankenfurter kills him and serves him for dinner to his unaware guests, the audience cry of "oh no, not meatloaf again for dinner" was always good for laughs.
I hate that movie so much. My cousins used to watch it nonstop.
Yes. My gen x generation saw that whole scene as something.... well, "older, lamer", and there was zero comprehension why anyone should be nostalgic about some 'campy' part of the 1970s. It seemed completely incompatible with the sort of "punk/hiphop" youth culture that was booming in the early/mid 80s
I actually spent a lot of my teens in an area of the east vill where the midnight showings of Rocky Horror had been going on for 2 decades.... I always knew what it was, but never quite grokked why dressing up and yelling things at a movie screen was supposed to be a hipset activity.
I was an 80's kid as well. Once I went to college, there was a theater in Dallas that had a Friday midnight showing. We saw it as something similar to a comic convention. It was worth going once (after a couple of joints and half a fifth) if only to laugh at the idiots, but there wasn't much value of a repeat viewing.
The thing I find sad is that they still occasionally show it on TV. The movie's only redeeming quality is that it gave everyone the opportunity to get together and be drunk and stupid, which is entirely lost on a television screen. Does anyone actually watch Rocky Horror on television?
Blind woman sues Peter Luger steakhouse over its inaccessible website
"Amanie Riley, 22, of Yonkers...claims that she tried to order four strip steaks, a two-pack of extra thick bacon, a $100 gift certificate and a "Made in Brooklyn" T-shirt from PeterLuger.com, but was unable to do so because the site is not compatible with screen-reading software used by the visually impaired."
That's quite a date night.
One - when did Lugars start doing "Internet Take-Out"? (unless they do like Omaha steaks and retail meat-by-mail?)
(looks)
Yeah.
So, lady complains one site isn't "blind friendly".
(and of course she will pick the site to sue which has the highest reputational-value at risk and most likely to settle quickly)
Same lady touts her accomplishments, receiving grant-awards, etc. here
the impression one gets is of someone who understands that there are systems which provide benefits, and how one games said systems is the measure of 'success'.
As a complete side note... i think paying shitloads of money for Lugars 'raw meat' is idiotic. 80% of the reason they're especially good is because they cook them in a pool of dutch butter.
I wondered why she didn't jist pick up a phone.
lol
seriously.
Public accommodation means zero aspect of your business can potentially inconvenience people with disabilities.
Who was it who argued the ADA was one of the most expensive (and useless) laws ever created? I thought it was something linked here a while back. It was like a case study in "Legislation Designed For Lawyers" which has zero actual effect in improving the lives of the 'disabled'.
Well well well.
It appears the timing on this is ... coincidental
Yeah, this isn't totally EXACTLY like the trans-man suing the men's barbershop thing in CA within days of passing "anti-trans discrimination law"
Law gets passed; lawyers go looking for compliant (and sympathetic) plaintiffs
I wonder why she didn't sue the screen reading software company for creating a faulty product.

I remember a Mormon USO song-and-dance troupe who came to my ship. Literally, song and dance -- canes, straw hats, the whole shebang. I watched for a minute or so, but I was completely offput by those damned frozen smiles -- about 5 seconds in, I started staring at them, trying to figure how they could maintain that awful smile while still singing, and after a minute or two just left -- too damned unnerving.
Can you imagine having that smile staring at you while she ground away at some cavity? You might get a peek down her shirt, depending on how much of her cheerleading exhibitionism she retained, but that smile would give me nightmares.

Miss. Legalizes Daily Fantasy Sports
Most esoteric beauty pageant ever.
So...
They are going to spend extra tax dollars to determine how to tell a company to run their business and how much the government should steal from it, in an arena that government has no business regulating or stealing from?
*shakes head...sighs*
In order to deliver a report by Oct 15, they have to start now, long before any effects of the current legislation will take place, so their report will be out of date before they even start. They can't even be bothered to fake a proper fig leaf.
And the businesses and players should consider themselves lucky the thing isn't simply going to be shut down.
Ya know, I can understand the rationale behind regulating some things, say, fuel stations, or rat poison, even building codes and restaurant health inspections, even though free markets would do a better job.
I cannot understand what rationale these goons give to themselves for defaulting to everything must be regulated -- I suppose a weak precautionary principle of some sort. It really comes down to just being nannies, to thinking the populace is generally way to dumb to look out for themselves, and the self-selected elite have proven to themselves that they deserve to be the elite becuase they have self-selected themselves, thus proving their superior wisdom.
Or something like that.
Your mistake is in accepting the premise that the goal of regulation is to somehow make the target of regulation somehow safer or more regular. There might be a few useful idiots in the vein you describe, but I'm convinced it's all about the opportunity to enrich oneself at the expense of the public.
No no -- I said I canna *understand* it. I do *recognize* it.
