EgyptAir Plane Wreckage Found, Oklahoma Lawmakers Criminalize Abortions, Oscar Isaac Is Not a Libertarian: P.M. Links

-
"X-Men: Apocalypse," Fox Searchers found the wreckage of EgyptAir Flight 804 about 150 nautical miles north of the coast of Egypt. Now comes the work of figuring out why the plane crashed.
- Morley Safer, 60 Minutes newsman, is dead at age 84.
- An amendment in the House to bar federal contractors from discriminating against gay or transgender employees failed narrowly after Republican leaders held the vote open and a handful of Republican representatives changed their vote at the very end.
- Actual Native Americans really, really do not care whether or not a football team is called the "Redskins."
- Oklahoma's legislature has passed a bill that would make it a felony to perform an abortion and to revoke the medical license of any doctor who performs one. They could also be punished with up to three years of prison time.
- The "Internet's boyfriend" (eyeroll) Oscar Isaac (of the soon-to-be-released X-Men: Apocalypse) responded to a small group of people who freaked out about him wearing an Atlas Shrugged T-shirt by telling Rolling Stone he just liked the design and was not a libertarian. But before those upset people coming running back to him, note that he also liked ska music at some point, so be advised.

Actual Native Americans really, really do not care whether or not a football team is called the "Redskins."
They need to stay out of it.
False consciousness?
Internalized racism.

It's almost like they think high alcoholism and suicide rates on reservations are a bigger problem.
There are a ton of Native Americans in Minneapolis (or indians as they prefer to be called in these parts). So many of them have terribly pock-marked skin. Anybody know why?

It's acne scars. For the same reasons that natives have an extremely high rate of diabetes, they are also more prone to very bad acne in their teens.
"Morley Safer, 60 Minutes newsman, is dead at age 84."
He lived longer than...

60 Minutes.
Where's the Maple Leaf next to his name?
Speaking of Maple Leaves, your boy Kessel is going deeper into the playoffs than he ever thought was even possible.
Why is he *my* boy? He A) plays for your creepy team (I mean Penguins on skates? /shudders), B) he's American and C) The Maple Losers are not my team.
Too late. I've branded you a Toronto fan.
That's worse than having bad breath.
The name is here to stay. Unless they want to be Indian Givers.
Waiting for Michael Robertson to weigh in.
That's what I always thought. It's a few activists who think they can speak for a whole, very culturally diverse group of people. Fuck those people.
Was Redskins ever even a slur at all? It sounds a little dated and weird if someone calls an actual American Indian "redskin", but it's hardly the equivalent of "nigger" or "gook" or something like that.
Guilty, white people on the internet know what's good for those stupid mongrels Zeb, and I'll be damned if I sit here silently and let you insult them.
Redskin was actually what the natives called themselves in comparison to the white man. Their is a bunch of bullshit stories about it being a reference to white men scalping natives for bounty, but it's just that: bullshit.
Money quote:

What do you use to shoot 'em up for their Death Matches?

Well I just want the model. Maybe we could split the cost? You could keep the shirt, and I'd keep her?
No, I'm keeping her too.
You can only wear a Che t-shirt if your Beria and Himmler t-shirts are in the laundry.
I was at the Baseball HOF in December last year. They had an exhibit on Latin baseball with a section on Cuba. There was a large photo of Castro, which I guess I can understand regarding his involvement with Cuban baseball, but they also had a large photo of Che, with no explanation of his relevance to Cuban baseball. I went to the Front Desk and LOUDLY voiced my displeasure that they were commemorating a mass murderer and thug. They could not explain why Che's photo was there.
I don't suppose it mattered as it is still there, but I felt better.
This is the kind of analysis that made Matt Yglesias a rockstar.
Is he still around?
I forgot about him. Does he still sport a beard? Is he still sad? Does he still wear a tie? Does he still stick a glass tube named Enola Gay up his ass while sucking statist pipi?
Still has the sad beard, still is dumber than a bag of rocks.
Imma say that most democrats aren't all that happy with who won their nomination as well.
Just like most republicans.
Good news is we're all in the same stinky leaking garbage barge.
To be fair, this is among the few true statements I've seen from him.
I'm against the Redskins name on general principle because they're the Redskins and fuck the Redskins. I'm also against the Cowboys and Giants. All 3 should be forced to rename themselves something embarrassing. .
God I can smell the losing stink of an Eagles fan from here. Have fun with two weeks of Bradford before he breaks his pussy bone next season and you than have to convince yourself Chase Daniels or Carson Wentz are going to be good.
Already convinced about Wentz!
That was the dumbest move made by your organization in a while. It's okay though a few things for sure are going to happen to the redskins RG3 is going to be good in Cleveland and Kirk Cousins is going to either sign with us for a cap crippling amount of money and shit the bed or get pissed when we franchise him again next year and leave us only to win a Superbowl somewhere else.
Unfortunately, it looks like lil' Danny Snyder is keeping his grubby little hands off of the football operations for now, leading to the Redskins being a decent team. They'll probably still find a way to screw it all up, but I much preferred when they were a total laughingstock.
RG3 is going to be good in Cleveland
Idle started happy hour early.
i do have a drinking problem.
By comparison to their recent QBs, maybe.
Do we have a choice?

Chase Daniels is an outstanding back-up. But I think that's the best he can be.
Chase Daniels is an outstanding back-up.
Bobarian has also started happy hour early
Much as I hate the Cowboys and Redskins, I'd rather see one of them win the next twenty Super Bowls than ever see the goddamned Eagles win one. It brings me endless satisfaction to think of that big fat zero in their Super Bowl title column.
But hey, they'll always have that meaningless comeback against the Giants to crow about while I enjoy my memories of four Super Bowl wins.
Fricken Giants and their flukey SB wins.
Really, only one was a fluke - 2011. I still have no idea how the hell that team won. Eli played out of his mind that year, but the rest of the team was terrible.
2007 was an upset, but that was a really good team. They got off to a bad start that year which made a lot of people discount them, but by the end of the season they were playing some damned good football, like in week 17 when they had nothing to play for but almost beat the Patriots to deny them 16-0. They proceeded to win 3 road playoff games, the last two against two 13-3 teams and the last one in below zero Lambeau, conditions under which the Packers virtually never lose....then beat the 18-0 team. And then the 2008 team dominated the league before the Plax shooting incident pretty much destroyed the season.
1990 team was awesome, one of the most underrated in NFL history. They weren't flashy, but they just strangled teams. Held the mighty 49er offense to 7 and 13 points in two games in Candlestick, held the high octane Bills to 19 the week after they hung 51 on the Raiders. And the 1986 team was a juggernaut - 17-2, the two losses by a total of eight points, made the Super Bowl by winning by a combined margin of 66-3, and pounded the Broncos 39-20 after a shaky first half.
Fuck Dom Capers for not giving Al Harris help against Plaxico.
And fuck Brett Favre for throwing that terrible INT.
Why is Strahan in such demand on the talk-show circuit? And that Norwood FG should have buried them.
So they got three as 'surprise' wins.
If only the Eagles could get some of that luck!
It's funny how Strahan's image took a total 180 after he retired. He was a major asshole for most of his career who had a rep for only caring about his own stats and paycheck, but after the 2007 run he became this wise team leader and everyone loved him.
Norwood had never made a kick that far on grass. Ever. Anyway, 47 yarders weren't the chips shots back then that they are today, and Norwood's rep was that he was an accurate kicker but one who lacked range.
Favre took a dive for Strahan.

All 3 should be forced to rename themselves something embarrassing.
Given their unbroken history of suckitude for the last, God, how many years? what could be more embarrassing than being named the Cowboys?

Fuck the Redskins. Bastards kept football out of one of the two best football cities for years. Fuck them.
Eagles. Fuck the Eagles. They hired a dog-torturer for a QB, then moved on to Butt Fumble. Throwing snowballs at Santa was actually pretty funny. But that doesn't make up for it. Fuck the Eagles.
Cowboys. Fuck the Cowboys. You're not America's Team, you Jerry Jones Amenhotep's Mummy pieces of shit. Tony Romo has gotten kicked out of men's rooms. Fuck the Cowboys.
Fuck Indianapolis. Because Irsay. Fuck them.
Irsay moved the team in the middle of the night because the MD legislature threatened to use eminent domain on the team.
End the sentence right there. Fuck Indianapolis. Fuck Irsay. The corpse and the still barely alive one. Fuck them.

Passing a law you know is going to be overturned by the courts on a constitutional basis should result in your right to be a legislator being revoked, and you should be punished by prison time for it.
What if the law is perfectly constitutional and the courts are wrong?
More martyrdom and butt-hurt for you, then!
You need to relax.
Here's a song which seems to be about relaxation - just listen to it and let the stress fall away.
Buttsex, Eddie. Just do it.
But it will halt abortions there until such time as an injunction or ruling is issued. And have a chilling effect. Etc. Which is, of course, the point of the exercise.
The process is always the punishment.

Actually, I have bandwidth caps, not dial-up. Living out in the middle of nowhere, I can only get satellite internet.
I can only get satellite internet.
"Ewwwwwwwww, *gross*!"
/teenage niece
How far out in the middle of nowhere are you?
They have broadband on the San Juan Islands now, for christ sake.
Get on this.
Thousand-foot driveway uphill. I'd have to pay for that much wire to get cable tv or internet.
1000 feet of cat5e is under 50 bucks. But you'd need repeaters for 100base ethernet.
Yikes. I was stuck with satellite a few years ago. Mine was at least one generation behind the current tech. The bandwidth caps never bothered me, but the latency - holy shit, could that be a pain.
I don't do FPS games or MMORPGs. I do play Go over the internet, but latency isn't a problem there.
How is that now? Other than the caps? I also live in the middle of nowhere but not so much in nowhere that I can't get DSL.

Agreed
Re the Redskins. Should we be surprised?
"The Post polled 504 people who identify primarily as Native American from across the country, including those who lived on reservations and those who were not part of a tribe.
The general population appears to care more about the name than Native Americans. A 2014 ESPN poll found that 23 percent of the population favored a name change."
Nooooo! Why do they act against their interests! /prog.
"But the majority agreed with Rusty Whitworth, a Confederated Salish and Kootenai who lives on Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana.
"Ah, heck, just let them keep it. It ain't hurting nobody," he told the Post."
I'd totally lay a french kiss on this one.
It ain't hurting nobody,
But as a member of a privileged class who checks his priviliege and tries to speak up for the underprivilieged, I think the name Redskins is literally violent.
That's very well-done, MPG.
You're white and literally Hitler, and that's OK as long as you know it!
And actual enrolled member of a tribe and a reservation-dweller. That's got to hurt.
Hell, there's an all-Navajo high school in Arizona whose teams are the Redskins, and the parents and students almost universally like the name and have no plans to change it. Obviously, some enlightened white leftists from the East Coast need to head down there ASAP to straighten those dumb Indians out and tell them what's good for them.
In Minnesoda we passed a law against indian nicknames for high schools a long time ago. The problem was that we have a lot of reservations and some of them like the Mahnomen Indians liked their nickname and mascot, so they had to be granted waivers.
But 10 out of 10 white liberals find it offensive.
Don't you mean 9 little liberals?
Actual Native Americans really, really do not care whether or not a football team is called the "Redskins."
I believe that polls like this have previously been mentioned back during the heat of the uproar.
And the American people completely ignored them then, too.
And the American peopleESPN and other media organizations completely ignored them then, too
Well, do these Indians think they know better than the learned scribes of ESPN what's best for them? Please! We don't call it the White Man's Burden for nothing!
/sarc
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
For those who didn't click through to the ESPN article - the entire thrust of the ESPN commentary was that they (ESPN and the intelligentsia) know damn well that it is offensive.... really, really offensive. And the only reason that the Native Americans didn't say it was important was because they have more important things. But (and this is literally what they had to say on the matter) us smart ESPN commentator folks are capable of holding two things in our heads at the same time, and just because something else is more important it doesn't mean that this mascot isn't super important too.
They completely and utterly fail to comprehend a world in which those ignorant natives know best what to find offensive when uttered in their direction. The condescension was palpable.

Shortage in firearms officers means 'not enough to deal with current threat'
PLANS for extra firearms officers will not make up for a huge reduction in recent years, Hampshire's police federation has warned.
It comes as the Police Federation of England and Wales said the national shortage is leaving Britain vulnerable to terror attacks.
Steve White, national chairman, said Government's plans announced last month to train another 1,500 firearms officers to deal with the terror threat looked doubtful.
The warning comes as a survey of 16,800 officers shows that while 40% fear they will be attacked at work, just half this number (20%) have or want personal firearms.
He added: Before we even start talking about recruiting the extra 1,500, we are struggling to fill the vacancies we have currently got because of the lack of understanding and protection that officers would have if they have to discharge their firearm.'
vulnerable to terror attacks.
lolwut? In what terror attack in Britain, would an armed officer have saved the day?
The one thing to like about Britain, unarmed cops, and they're blowing it.
That and Thistly Cross Cider.
I like the police without guns. But it seems odd that they also have no interest in even knowing how to use a gun, should that become necessary.
we are struggling to fill the vacancies we have currently got because of the lack of understanding and protection that officers would have if they have to discharge their firearm
Is he really saying that it's hard to recruit armed cops because they get no "understanding and protection" if they use their guns, suggesting that it would be easier to recruit cops if there were public support for cops getting special rights if they use their guns rather than being treated like normal people who are held accountable for their actions?
The underlying problem is how normal people are treated if they used a firearm in self defense/against a criminal in Limeyland.
"'The results of this poll confirm a reality that is encouraging but hardly surprising: Native Americans are resilient and have not allowed the NFL's decades-long denigration of us to define our own self-image,' National Congress of American Indians executive director Jackie Pata and Oneida Nation representative Ray Halbritter said in the statement. 'However, that proud resilience does not give the NFL a license to continue marketing, promoting, and profiting off of a dictionary-defined racial slur -- one that tells people outside of our community to view us as mascots.'"
"The people I represent may not care, but just because they aren't offended doesn't mean it's offensive towards them."
Ya know, I'd personally think changing the name would be a good idea, but if no one is harmed and apparently very few people care, why bother caring?? And the defenses offered for why we should still care are hilarious.
just because they aren't offended doesn't mean it's [not] offensive towards them
No, I think that is what it means. Assuming he meant to have the "not" I inserted in there.
One of the 11 judges of Trump's judge list has posted several anti-Trump tweets.
The article makes this look like it reflects on Trump, but I'd think it makes him look like a bigger man who acknowledges the merits of one of his critics.
Or he didn't read the list.
^^This... Trump has no idea who any of those people are, most of who would have voted against Kelo.
Disaster!
As if Trump has any idea who this guy is. Somebody will probably explain it to him, though, and then a Trump spokesman will claim the inclusion of this guy's name on the list was just a database glitch and Donald will twitter a dismissive insult of the guy.
In which case Willett might just take up the gauntlet - and he's a *lot* wittier than Trump. I kinda hope this happens.
House oversight chairman moves to censure IRS chief, strip pension
http://www.foxnews.com/politic.....cmp=hplnws
The chairman of the top House investigative panel introduced a measure Wednesday to censure IRS Commissioner John Koskinen -- and remove him from office without a pension -- in the latest bid by Republicans to pressure him into being more cooperative in their probe of the 2013 IRS targeting scandal.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is seeking Koskinen's resignation or removal for what he calls an alleged "pattern of conduct inconsistent with the trust and confidence placed in him as an officer of the United States."
If censured, Koskinen, who became commissioner in 2013, would also forfeit his government pension and other federal benefits.
Good. Fuck him.
And that, people, is how you "sweat" a bureaucrat. Well-done, Mr. Chairman.
How that sonofabich still has a job and isn't in prison, I'll never know.
No, wait, I do know.
Too bad it's being done by that moron shitbag, Chaffetz.
The 2013 IRS targeting scandal? What is this, 2013? Move on already guys! Obama's about to leave office and you're still trying to smear him with these fake scandals? What difference, at this point, does it make? Let's just push the reset button, wipe the slate clean - like with a cloth or something - and hope in change for next year. It's not like a President Trump or a President Clinton would be the sort of thin-skinned, vindictive, whiny little bitch who would ever use the resources of government to go after anybody that dared criticize them, so why worry?

House votes to ban Confederate flags on VA cemetery flagpoles
WASHINGTON ? The House has voted to ban the display of the Confederate flag on flagpoles at Department of Veterans Affairs cemeteries.
The 265-159 vote would block descendants and others seeking to commemorate veterans of the Confederate States of America from flying the Confederate Battle Flag over mass graves, even on days that flag displays are permitted.
California Democrat Jared Huffman authored the prohibition, saying the flag represents "racism, slavery and division."
After a mass shooting at a South Carolina black church last year, the state legislature ordered the flag removed from the capitol in Columbia.

Judge dismisses fine against New Jersey homeowner who flew Trump flags
A New Jersey man who faced a fine for flying flags supporting Donald Trump outside his home had charges against him dropped by a judge Wednesday.
Joseph Hornick was ticketed on March 25 for violating a West Long Branch ordinance that restricts the display of political signs until 30 days before an election. New Jersey's primary is set for June 7.
Hornick was ticketed after a resident, who is a former Democratic councilman, called police and questioned why his complaints about the flags to the municipal code enforcement officer had not resulted in a citation, NJ.com reported, citing a police report.
Yeh.
I wonder if they'd charge him had it been The Cunt flying up their exposing her cunt.
How can that possibly be constitutional?
In that part of New Jersey, they don't let little things like the constitution get in our way.

Grassley: Vets Fought to Protect Constitutional Rights, Don't Take Away Those Rights
Senator Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today expressed disgust that Senate Democrats were objecting to a vote on his amendment to ensure that veterans don't lose their Second Amendment rights because of a constitutionally questionable process used by the Department of Veterans Affairs for reporting names to the federal National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The NICS is effectively a national gun ban list and all persons reported to it are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. Grassley tried to bring up his amendment during the current Senate debate on the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill, but Senate Democrats refused to allow it to be considered.
As of December 2015, nearly 99 percent of names listed on the "mental defective" category within the federal gun background check system were from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Grassley's amendment requires that before the VA reports names to the Department of Justice for eventual placement on the gun ban list, the VA must first find, by judicial order, that a veteran is a danger to himself, herself, or others ? a standard which is not currently employed by the VA.
Democrats want to vote against the Religious Freedom Restoration Act after voting for it.
Their bill would amend RFRA as follows:
"It is the sense of Congress that?
"(1) the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 should not be interpreted to authorize an exemption from generally applicable law that imposes the religious views, habits, or practices of one party upon another;
"(2) the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 should not be interpreted to authorize an ex emption from generally applicable law that imposes meaningful harm, including dignitary harm, on a third party; and
"(3) the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 should not be interpreted to authorize an exemption that permits discrimination against other persons, including persons who do not belong to the religion or adhere to the other beliefs of those to whom the exemption is given."
This means that a Muslim woman who wants a job in a clothing store owned by an atheist cannot force the owner to grant her an exemption from the employee dress code, right? Because that would be imposing her religious views on someone who's is all religions, right? And she would be forcing everyone around her to grant her a special privilege, right?
Hey wait a minute...
...someone who's opposed to all religions....
Damn voice recognition ...
No, RFRA would allow the atheist to cite a religious objection to allowing Muslim-style clothing on his employees, but the Democratic bill would close the courthouse door in the atheist's face and say that the atheist must lose the case.
Mentioned in the A.M. links - what would it take for a bunch of you libertarian types to move to Charlottesville, Virginia as part of my "Free City Project". It's a great city with a lot of shitty political opinions. :-p
While I like Charlottesville fine I'd rather move to Richmond.
RVA is a good city, but you're gonna need a bigger population to take it over. Independent city of CVille is only around 46k.
Maybe we can take over Glen Allen, at least? I could use the company.
Charlottesville? That's the Virginia capital of wealthy white Democrats who can't stand living in DC. Icky poo.
Maybe we could take over Wintergreen.
Nelson County! I'm fine with that, too.
The Nelson County locals just went ballistic over a proposed pipeline. They might be amenable to a party that opposed eminent domain, but they'd be fair-weather friends.
Yeah they were against the pipeline but eminent domain really wasn't the argument they were making. It was lots of environmental nonsense (ignoring that the natural gas being piped to NC was meant to replace coal burning plants).
Actually most of the limousine liberals are in horse farms in Albemarle County, not living in the city limits itself.
True. I had some relatives living amongst them once upon a time.
Why Charlottesville? Wasn't New Hampshire specifically chosen because it was the best starting point? You might have better luck in Lynchburg.
Lynchburg? Who wants to live under the political sway of the Falwell clan?
"Lynchburg? Who wants to live under the political sway of the Falwell clan?"
Wasn't the point to take over? Also, they're a Godsend compared to People's Republic of Charlottesville.
Got to start small, work our way up. Maybe Grundy as a starter.
Grundy? Wow, don't hear that name much.
Grundy Gultch.
(I know claiming the Rushdoonyites as an alternative to Progressives is a bit ironic)
Wasn't New Hampshire specifically chosen because it was the best starting point?
Too cold, the orphans freeze.
Too many entrenched progressives out there. And some of them are really, really rich so they could outspend you in any campaign.
Richmond has too many welfare-dependents and they all vote for the free stuff political machine.
Buy up all of Petersburg and start over. The whole city couldn't cost most than a couple million, lock stock and barrel.
First thing you need?
A bigger crater.
We could probably take Emporia.
I love Charlottesville. Can't we kick out the DC Democrat Ex-Pats?
Alternatively, could we just take Crozet?
Crozet is not incorporated so it is just part of the county, so you'd be directly under the influence of the horse-farming (is there any animal more fucking useless today?) liberals, and I suspect they are a lot of ex-DC/NoVA's just by how ugly their giant vinyl sided homes are.
Yeah. I'll keep advocating for Petersburg then. Dirt cheap, a couple of nice antebellum houses and nowhere to got but up! It's like Little Detroit.
My ex went to the University of Virginia. I'd like to avoid that city at all costs.
Yeah, right? Isn't also home to a bunch of DOD and spook farms? Libertopia it is not.
A guaranteed job, three beautiful women, and at least 50 trained orphans, to be replenished annually.
Charlottesville is such a weird place anyway. Because of UVA, it has the usual white lefty vibe to it, but a lot of parts of it are really rough.
I loved most things about living there. Everything but most of the people.
It's not *that* rough.
For a quaint college town, I mean. Compare it to Chapel Hill for example.
Never been!
Rough? Charlottesville? I wish where I live could be that "rough."
I would consider Charlottesville. Mountains, moderate weather. I'm assuming with the University there is a decent bar and restaurant scene? Concern about proxity to DC and how that impacts cost of land. I'd like some acerage.
Pretty excellent bar and restaurant scene that is even better today than when I moved here 5 years ago.
I'm not sure if DC proximity is the cause of higher land prices. The city itself is inflated, for sure, and I suspect it is because of liberal anti-development attitudes. Outside the city itself, prices aren't so bad. You'd need to be a city resident in order to take over the retarded city council though. :[
I probably just need to move out to a farm.
Right. Is downtown basically all tourist? We were in Asheville, NC last fall. Great area. Mountains and forests. Lots to do. Downtown was all tourism. Everything. We have been planning on visiting the Shenandoah area so will check it out when we're down there.
It has some touristy shops but the restaurants are mostly sustained by the locals. I liked downtown Asheville a lot and agree that it is a beautiful area.
What part of the Shenandoah were you planning to visit? I work in Staunton.
It was some lodge out in the country somewhere that my wife had found. I'll have to check with her. She had sent me a link and we had talked about it last year but I can't remember the name of it. We definitely want to check out the area.. Any cabins in the mountains you would recommend? Also any hotels in Charlottesville near the bars and restaurants?
They built a Marriott Residence Inn right in the middle of down town that most of the city's residents were against because *gasp* it's a soul-less chain hotel. It's walkable to a whiskey bar if that's your thing or this new tavern with a downstairs "speakeasy" that just opened. It's also walkable to 3-Notch'd Brewery, Champion Brewery, Kardinal Beer Hall, and quite a few good restaurants (Oakhart Social, Brookville, Lampo, Bluegrass Grill (awesome breakfast), Blue Moon Diner (also awesome breakfast).
The Omni Charlottesville is across the street from the new Marriott and there is at least one small B&B (can't recall the name) on South Street which is also a block away.
Thanks! Yeah, looks like a beautiful area.
Oh and it was the Courtyard Marriott that is downtown, not the Residence Inn.
cool. Thanks:)
You didn't mention the wine! I'd move to C-ville, but I'd rather move to NH if we're talking about Free Cities/States. Skiing.
I did mention it in the AM links! Central Virginia produces a lot of great wine, beer and cider! A few distilleries are starting to pop up as well.
Morley Safer? Good riddance to one of the pioneers of slimy, left-wing character assassination journolism.
I remember him correcting and demanding some kid (a really nice kid it looked like) who said 'Obama' to say "President Obama". That should have been edited out but this being 60 Minutes they had to let that in. If I'm that kid, I burn the tape when I'm old enough to accept my inner-iconoclast.
Good grief, what scum.
Safer: *Oh, God-Emperor! You're so devilishly dreamy! SIRE MY CHILDR...* "Next up -- President Obama's plan for hope and change, right after the weather."
Unfortunately I had to suffer through a lot of that garbage during Sunday dinner as a little kid, and even as a dumb little 10 year old I was able to eventually figure out that I was seeing one slimy hit piece after another after another.
To be fair, they also introduced me to government abuses. One of the first stories I remember as pushing me toward libertarian philosophy was a story about a hyperactive department of children's services kidnapping a family's kids after an anonymous tip from a feuding neighbor. I think it was in the Maryland suburbs of DC.
The father ended up having to move out and divorce his wife so that the kids could move back in with their mom, despite denials all around by the kids and mom. 6 years down the road I think that a family court finally let him see his kids under supervised visits.
SCOTUS rules unanimously that the speedy trial clause doesn't apply once you've been found guilty, so the government and imprison you indefinitely by repeatedly delaying your sentencing hearing:
Supreme Court Rules Right to Speedy Trial Ends at Guilty Verdict
Clarence Thomas really seems to be going to crap in his old age.
The Justices' fallibility grows clearer with each decision they make. When will the hapless idealists among us cease to idolize them?
so the government and imprison you indefinitely by repeatedly delaying your sentencing hearing:
Well, to be slightly fair, that's not what they decided. What the decision says is that if the government does that, they have not violated your right to a speedy trial. They specifically noted that it is possibly a due process violation, but that wasn't the question before them, because the guy and his lawyers never argued it.
Alito and Thomas, in the concurring opinion, explicitly ruled out the due process objection as well.
Oh, well, fuck them, by all means, then.
Why would that be the remedy in the case of delayed sentencing? What kind of retard logic is that? How about the remedy being that you must do the sentencing immediately?
VICE: You've got a really impressive r?sum?. You were a Marine sergeant, and you've worked in the aerospace industry and the California prison system. Will any of that matter to voters, or is your being the "Satanic candidate" going to overshadow everything else?
"Steve Hill: Yes, it will....
"[VICE] Give me one of your jokes. What's your closer?
"[Hill:] I like to ask this in the clubs of Los Angeles?it's a two part question: "Does prayer work?" And then I say: "Well, if prayer works, why do people consistently, on average, purchase more than one lottery ticket?" And when they let that sink in, and I ask them again: "Does prayer work? If prayer works, why do so many black people live in the ghetto?" And then I'll say to someone in the audience, "Why's that? Because white people pray too?" And that's when the audience falls apart laughing."
Sounds like my kind of guy
Because nothing in the bible says anything about this life being pleasant?
"Well, if prayer works, why do people consistently, on average, purchase more than one lottery ticket?"
God does not play dice with the universe. Nor lottery.

I don't believe they actually did criminalize abortion, since last I checked there is some pretty obvious Supreme Court precedent on this subject.
They didn't make getting an abortion illegal. They just made performing one illegal. Totally different!
Yeah, guessing that doesn't stand up in court. "I didn't make buying guns illegal, it's just illegal to sell them! Clearly this doesn't infringe on the second amendment!"

And in Yuri's world, Google would never have been allowed to exist.
I saw that too. Didn't know who she was before looking it up. Was wondering if anyone here would comment on it.
It's incredible how much many people on the left of willing to overlook as long as that person criticized or was opposed to the people they dislike.
So because Yuri stated she was against racism, sexism, (Western) imperialism, and capitalism, it's totally ok that she her overall beliefs were insanely abhorrent, such as supporting mass-murdering communists like Mao and the Shining Path, or (bigoted and sexist) terrorists like Osama bin Laden.
If my people's self-esteem is so low that they don't care about being called redskin, that is a great shame, not something to live with or cheer about.

How?
I don't care about being called 'honkie' or 'white devil' and I'm a raving narcissist. Maybe this is actually evidence their self-esteem is healthy enough that some assholes racist statements don't hurt them.

The case appeared to highlight the difficulties faced by older people who are on fixed incomes and struggle to pay for their medicine when they are ill or in pain.
Does it?
Searchers found the wreckage of EgyptAir Flight 804 about 150 nautical miles north of the coast of Egypt. Now comes the work of figuring out why the plane crashed.
Didn't Trump already call it?
I know on CNN they had a panel of experts discussing "wind sprites? flying monkeys? an air-traffic controller prank? what could possibly be the reason for this strange disappearance?" I was baffled myself until I heard Trump make the terrorism connection and then I was smacking my head thinking it's so obvious once somebody else comes up with the suggestion.

Millennials are dicks: When Humans, Fueled by the Selfie Culture, Imperil Wildlife
I would rather save an animal than talk to the people of Stroudsburg, that's for sure.
Then there are those idiots who put a bison calf in their car and took it to the ranger station.
The mother rejected it, probably because it had moron stink all over it, and the rangers had to kill it.
Way to go, geniuses.
What were they supposed to do instead? Eat veal?
I did have an excellent bison strip steak last week.
They inspired the story.
Oh you're supposed to leave the calf alone. Do you you know who else just wanted to be left alone?

Someone needs to tell Oscar Isaac Ayn Rand hated libertarians.
In her dotage, after Goldwater's defeat made her a post-traumatic stress victim. But in her flaming youth she wrote the non-aggression pact we all sign (except Petersen) to join, pay dues or donate. GOP sycophants like Peter Schwartz did a lot to unbalance the dear old gal's judgment.

Thank God for that!

I feel the same way about Hagelin. It makes me physically ill to see him in that hideous uniform, playing for that disgusting franchise.
Out of curiosity, why do people who hate the Pens hate the Pens?
Hagelin
My least favorite player in the entire sport. He's the most under-the-radar dirty player in the league. I'd rather the sport be awash in goons than watch that slew foot artist go unpunished each game.
For one, NBC really seem to push them and the Red Wings down our throats. It's like the way outsized NFL coverage is given to the Cowboys, who are most decidedly not America's team.
For one thing, as a Rangers fan, I've always been bitter about the 1992 playoffs. Mario cried like a little bitch to get Adam Graves suspended and we ended up losing the series.
More in general, the organizations' two great superstars, Lemieux and Crosby, are both whining, crying, diving bitches who are sneaky-dirty players. Lemieux was the master of the quick slash to the crotch from behind, Crosby the slew-foot, and neither ever would get whistled for it, but breath on them and they'd go down in a wailing heap.
Letang's a piece of shit, too.
I don't think I'm qualified to answer as I'm a Caps fan.
...NBC really seem to push them and the Red Wings down our throats.
You believe those two organizations lobbied NBC Sports to do that? Milbury and Roenick have an obvious dislike for the Pens, but luckily they can be dismissed as buffoons.
Personally, except for Doc Emrick, I can't stand NBC's coverage of the NHL in general. I would rather watch any market's local coverage.
I don't think I'm qualified to answer as I'm a Caps fan.
I feel for you. This really was their year. The curse of Presidents' Trophy I think isn't so much a curse as it is a complacency that it's difficult to transition out of into the playoffs.
It's a good team. They'll be back.
The Caps were playing way over their heads for much of this season anyway. They're a very good team, but historically good? No way.
I prefer to listen to the Devils games on the radio.
I call bull there.
The NHL was a haven for goons and hacks. It got really bad when 66 got into the league.
I was and still am on his side about those days.

The Most Overrated Arena on Earth.
That and people seem to forget or overlook that captains are the ones on the ice supposed to argue calls with the referees. I always contend that if you're not working them you're not competing.
The 90's NHL was a tough thing to watch if you were into skilled play and scoring chances. If you were a fan of obstruction and interference then I'm sure the dead puck era was the golden years.
