Cops Confiscate Axe from Teen Chopping Wood to Build Fort

Don't worry, they returned the terrifying weapon to his parents.

A young Illinois man chopping wood had his axe taken from him by the police.

So much for the Land of Lincoln.

Patch. com's Morgan Searles reports that the teen boy was chopping already-fallen wood along a prairie path in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, when a "concerned person" called the cops.

Of course! Since when are teen boys supposed to do anything other than play Grand Theft Auto in the privacy of their own bedrooms?

A Fiskars wood axe, a rusted machete and a roofer's axe were confiscated May 5 from a teenage boy…

He said he was trying to build a fort for him and his friends, police reported.

Police took the tools for safekeeping to be returned to the boy's parents.

Let's hope this teaches the young man never to attempt to do or make anything on his own again. A can-do, hands-on entrepreneur is certainly the last thing America needs.

I like your work and mostly agree with you. I see you put "concerned citizen" in quotes, but I think you put more scorn on the cops that you should, and less on that concerned citizen. I have some sympathy for the police in cases like this. Once they are called, they own the matter if they fail to act. If they do nothing and if there is an accident no matter how unlikely, the headline is how the cops could have prevented this. Same goes for protective services agencies. In a case like this, there is no downside for the cops to act.

How about more scorn on busybodies and drive by callers who see non-problems, do nothing themselves except get on their cell phone, and make someone else have to make a judgment?

That's funny because the cops have been given a ridiculous amount of discretion on whether to act in any particular situation, and yet you seem comfortable with absolving them of using said discretion. In fact, it seems the only time they use any discretion at all is when the person of interest is another cop.
