U.S., Other Powers Open Door to Arming Provisional Libya Government
U.S. troops on the ground seeking potential fighting partners.

Secretary of State John Kerry and foreign ministers from the other four permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, and more than a dozen other countries, met in Vienna to discuss a response to the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Libya.
Kerry and the ministers signed on to a communique that opens the door for arming the provisional government in Tripoli. Libya, which is full of weapons owned by civilians and members of various militias and other organized armed groups, has been under a U.N.-imposed arms embargo since the overthrow of long-time dictator Col Moammar Qaddafi during a U.S.-backed intervention in Libya. Weapons from the Libyan government's stockpiles had spread, according to the U.N., from Nigeria to Syria.
The U.S. and other countries that back the U.N.-recognized Tripoli government say that government's forces may not be sufficiently armed. Part of the summit was spent convincing countries like Egypt not to back a competing force led by Gen. Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya. Haftar claims to also be closing in on the ISIS stronghold in Sirte and has reportedly been provided military vehicles by the United Aram Emirates. The Guardian also reports on concerns that Russia could provide the eastern forces with billions' worth of their own currency to use and compete with against Tripoli.
In addition to pledging to arm the provisional government to fight ISIS, Kerry and the other ministers pledged to train the new presidential guard as well as the coast guard, and to resume oil shipments from Libya.
Kerry insisted military intervention was not on the table for the U.S. An unspecified number of American troops have been sent to Libya since December as part of "contact teams" to connect with militias that could fight ISIS. An official described the situation to CNN as "short of a formalized military presence on the ground."

We cannot allow a blowback gap!
Yeah, just in case the enemy is going to calm down and all just settle down in one place, you know, where they would be IN ONE PLACE, all together, where we knew where they were at, you need to get them all stirred up and scattered about. Because... well, we don't know why. I mean we have no clue what the fuck we're doing, but we have to do something!
Look man, we have to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them *over here*. Oh, wait - fighting them over there is just driving even more of them over here anyway.

Uh-huh...
Oh this will go well. Like that time they toppled Gaddafi to ISIS's and Al Qeada's benefit in the first place. Or the time they armed and equipped ISIS to take on Assad. It's smart power at it's best.
While there are boots on the ground, as in United States soldiers who are wearing boots literally standing on the Libyan ground, their presence does not constitute a "boots on the ground" policy, as their presence isn't connected to combat operations.
It makes sense to me.
They're not in formal wear, therefore not "formalized"

Hey, let's flush more money (and blood, everybody knows there'll be blood involved) we don't have into the bottomless sewer that is the Mideast. Looks like we're never going to fucking learn.

Last time I saw UAE soldiers, they were using French vehicles!!!!!!
Maybe apply the "American police" strategy?

my foreign policy also amounts to "fuck it".
A some point, after enough tries, the Top. Men. will pick the right strategy!
it's not a "formal" military presence. they're not wearing tuxedos fer chrissakes. okay, maybe one or two have on the tuxedo t-shirt but that just says, "I'm formal but I'm here to party."
so fine, call it a "formal but we're here to party" military presence.
That means all the soldiers have to have mullets too, right?
to discuss a response to the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Libya
And they all want to elect as president, the person who helped create this mess in the first place. These fools would be fired from a job as circus clowns.
Hey now, some Reason writers also see 4-8 more years of dipshit Neocon interventionism as somehow preferable to Trump.

No, but he is the smartest person in the world, just ask him.

OT but I thought this would get a chuckle here. Came across a comment on Reddit that said (in the context of Hillary offering Obama a position if she gets elected):
"I think over 8 years we've learned Obama doesn't have that big of an ego. I think he'd like the SC but I doubt it's that or nothing"
He'd be the first SCOTUS justice in history who would appear in all the group photos, staring straight up at the sky.
At his phone.
No way does the Big O sit down to be grilled by mere Senators on his qualifications and views.
Plus, that's like real work and shit, you know, seven or eight months of the year.
Non-Ivy little people get to read the equivalent term papers, too.
on a personal level i think obama is probably a pretty good guy, and there are few presidents or even politicians that don't have a rather healthy ego.
that said, i can't stop laughing at the idea that someone thinks he's the least bit humble. seriously, i might have to seek treatment because it's so damn funny.
Here's an idea: you want arms, here's arms. And here's the bill.
This'll go juuuust right. Go get 'em, boys!
I like how the only guy using promoted comments is just shilling for them.
Why is that promoted comments thing even there? I don't understand the purpose.

I'm terrible. I'll turn in my contrarian/libertarian card when my last orphan drops.
Cmon! Let's give the Arabs some guns! What could possibly go wrong?
If only we could get all these bitter clingers around here to give up their guns, so we can give them to the 'good' terrorists, everything would work out.
Just like the poor plumber who donated his truck.
I'd love to see some of the knobs who sold their gun back to some cops have to justify themselves when ISIS used said weapon to execute some poor sap.
The plumber sued in December.
End war!
Give every country in the world nukes.
Is nuclear proliferation emblematic of the Libertarian Moment?
Is Winston impressively obdurate or an autistic savant?
Trick question. The answer is obsequious, purple and clairvoyant
He's the Grimace?
Jerry, made thirsty by pretzels!
Francisco d'Anconia does support nuclear proliferation as a way to end war. And he said I was wrong to doubt the libertarian moment...
Well, from examples in just this century alone - its pretty obvious that one of the largest and most aggressive countries in the world will definitely leave you the fuck alone if they think you might have a nuke. Doubly so if they think you're crazy enough to actually use one or two.
So far the United States has proven to be, without a doubt, crazy enough to invade and obliterate anyone without a nuke. So shithole despots of the world, there's the answer.
Evidence:
Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea.
Nuff said.
Jesus, you are a fucking tedious asshole.
Don't you support nuclear proliferation as a way to end war?
Since we have never had atomic war, maybe it's worth a shot. But then I listened to 99 luftballoons and realized it might be a bad idea. Where are we on the doomsday clock anyway? We have at least five minutes to midnight.
I just checked wikipedia. And we only have 3 minutes left!!! The reason:
Concerns amid continued lack of global political action to address global climate change
It seems to me that the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has succumbed to mission creep.
I promise we nuke known oil fields to control global warming.
Same place we've always been - with the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists desperately trying to retain any relevance in the larger world by constantly announcing that, according to their feelz, we are now one second closer to midnight than we were the last time they tried this stunt to get attention.
You think, I think you are tedious because you disagreed with my post?
Correction...tedious AND stupid.
Might actually work. I don't trust Luxembourg though.

As a person with a memory spanning only six months, I see nothing at all that could possibly be wrong with this plan.
There's your libertarian memento.
An official described the situation to CNN as "short of a formalized military presence on the ground."
So, they're U.S,. troops. And they are on the ground. In Libya. But, I guess it's different because they're not formalized.
Where's Hugh Akston claiming that Egypt attacking Libya isn't foreign interventionism because it involves a local force?
OT, but really how fucking dumb would you have to be to not see this coming? There's actually people who ever believed that massive new regulations built around preventing climate change would not threaten jobs on a scale equal to the size of the new regulations?
Labor and Enviros start to clash
It's like a bum fight.
The Dems are ready to throw labor to the wind. They have the free shit crowd for votes and the radical greens who want to hand them total power to save the planet. What else do they need?
Plus, the private sector union workers are not necessarily reliable Dem voters (being white and prone to clinging bitterly), and are a shrinking demographic anyway.
The pubsec will support Dems to the gates of hell and beyond, union or no.
Really, there's no downside for the Dems to shitcan the unions.
The pubsec will support Dems to the gates of hell and beyond, union or no
Yep, else Rethuglicans and government so small it will go down the bathtub drain. Because, you know, Republicans drastically reduce the size of government every chance they get.
Uuuuhhhh... non public sector unions voting for Trump isn't a problem for the Democrats...? How is Hillary going to do in November without Michigan and Ohio?
Hobo fight!

Transgender hate mongers on the loose
A Connecticut woman, who sports a pixie haircut, says she was harassed in a Walmart restroom by a woman who apparently mistook her as transgender.
After posting a Facebook video about the incident, Aimee Toms said she's been threatened by internet trolls and called a "lesbian" and "whore."
This same thing happened in the 1960s when black people wanted to use the same bathrooms as white people," she said in the video.
This totally happened, no doubt, let's just run with it.
The first time a transvestite murders someone in a restroom the shit show will be insane.
It will be an illegal transvestite of course.
/The Donald
Not a sweet transvestite?
From Transexual?

I waiting on the 7 foot tall tranny that wants to join the WNBA.
Dennis Rodman?
Yeah. But you can bet that the narrative will be that they defended themselves from an intolerant Republican who committed the ultimate offense of being offended, and the trans was obligated to kill the person in self defense from the Republican's microaggression.
Aimee Toms said she's been threatened by internet trolls and called a "lesbian" and "whore."
This same thing happened in the 1960s when black people wanted to use the same bathrooms as white people
They were called lesbians and whores on the internet?
Also, I was ready to be outraged about her being called a lesbian, but are we supposed to be offended by girls in short haircuts being called "lesbian" now? Please, someone let me know before the moment passes.
I've thought about this a bit and I decided the pixie-haired girl straight girl is the offensive one for appropriating lesbian culture
I am offended when women with long hair cut their hair short and gain immense shoulder bulk.
Think about those 2 statements. She is indeed saying that blacks in the 1960s experiencing real racism is equal to some meanie calling her a lesbian on the intertoobz. I hope no one made fun of her hair for Christ sake. This is a national emergency. I look forward to the Rolling Stone article and the statements by Hillary and Obama.

The point is, internet trolls gonna troll and most people online have encountered it at some point. Anyone who thinks it's news-worthy, or worse - a historical civil rights travesty, is naive and sheltered.

You could have knocked me over with a feather - a new report documents attacks on Christians by Muslims...in German refugee camps. In Germany, of all places!
"The report warns that German authorities and police might be purposefully downplaying such incidents in order to avoid the "taboo" topic of Muslims attacking Christian refugees, keeping in mind the growing anti-immigration sentiments in the country....
"There have been a number of different reports in the past several months documenting Christian persecution in Muslim-dominated refugee camps in Germany beside the Open Doors report. Back in October 2015, a recent convert to Christianity at a camp in Hamburg-Eidelstedt was beaten nearly to death by Muslim refugees, before he was saved by other migrants."

Basically, they are the special victims of some kind of capitalist conspiracy that forced them to take enormous loans to pay for their useless masters degree in Gender Sciences and then the economic earthquake caused by capitalist greed drained all the 'opportunity' out of society and it was only through the magical powers of the Great Obama by which they've manage to survive on their Blogging income, but sadly they face a future where more evil capitalists may potentially lower taxes thereby accelerating the great Wealth Transfer from the energetic youth to the Vampire Corporate Classes.

Perhaps personal responsibility is overrated, and Millennials should blame the Baby Boomers for after all....

Re: The presidential election
I'm starting to feel like the consensus view that "its a shit-sandwich and we're all going to take a bite" is entirely wrong, and this is going to be the most productive presidential election of my lifetime.
*in a very specific, anti-government sense.
Its basically a Win-Win.
I honestly think either way its going to be a 1-term presidency, and the end result will be a vast-expansion and sharpening of the anti-institutional bias that has caught so many of the establishmentarians off guard.
I think its not about 2016 anymore at all. Its about 2020. Its about what happens when the new coalitions actually get organized and completely abandon the legacy GOP/DNC approaches to their former (now largely retired) constituencies.
The intervening 4 years are just going to be a sit-com of incompetence and partisan-outrage-mongering.
What were the last eight years? And what did it bring?

Look over in the 'suckers for socialism' thread. There's commie-kid, still supporting the failed scandahoovian socialist experiments, totally ignoring the more obvious failures. Check out the comment your garden-variety NPR reader dropped just now:
You also have to love stupid Americans who can't seem to even comprehend the idea of "the best interest of all," because they can't get past their juvenile obsession with personal liberty
I've got to say, this is the first time I've ever seen the mask slip that far. Remember, you libertarians are just a buncha fuckin' juveniles.
Yep, juvies always take responsibility for their actions! It's only adults who claim 'it broke!', or 'where's my lunch?'.
That's been a common meme for decades.
The idea is that we're less in favor of personal liberty than we are about telling all authority figures, stand-ins for mom and dad, to go to Hell.
See, I interpreted it as meaning that we are children because we object to allowing men with guns to kick down our doors, take a significant portion of our earned incomes, and dole it out to shiftless layabouts in exchange for votes.
We are considered to be naive as we refuse to acknowledge that the world is a big, dangerous place and that hard decisions and compromises need to be made.
Some things are IMPORTANT and thus we must all PULL TOGETHER but yet the libertarians refuse!
Pointing out that corruption always follows coercive power is just babbling baby-talk.
Pointing out that government services anti-entrepreneurial and have no price-discovery mechanism and thus are always under or over provided and always with massive fraud and abuse are the rantings of pimply-faced teens who just discovered Ayn Rand.
*add waste to fraud and abuse.
Remember how cats like to play with string? They're rehearsing for this.
So here's a theory about why America is such an ugly blot on the escutcheon of civilizational progress, and why it is we reign supreme nonetheless: it's because everywhere else in the first-world is a mausoleum to ideas and institutions long past their prime, little fiefdoms of little minds long ago consigned to the dust bins of history, relevant today only as tourist destinations and highlights for antiquarians. America is blemished and ugly because it's the place where, modernly, things are done. Things are produced, products and receipted, and transactions transacted. We are the most recent addition to the long history of civilization's slow progression toward excellence, and perhaps we haven't got all the niceties of Europe's macabre excesses, but we've got business sense. For the moment. Probably not for long.
"it's because everywhere else in the first-world is a mausoleum to ideas and institutions long past their prime, little fiefdoms of little minds long ago consigned to the dust bins of history, relevant today only as tourist destinations and highlights for antiquarians."
Well, SF is dotted with 'historical districts' which have been in existence for, oh, maybe 100 years. To a proggy, who views 1917 as the "future", that's just fine, thank you.
Besides, the low-info lefty voters live in those districts!
I'm just riffing on an English friend's observation that America is nothing but the same basic patchwork of franchises and trailer parks, etc. Which is true, but not the point: those European douchebags are the beneficiaries of the capital accumulation in America wedded to its resources plus the resources of developing countries, but they spit on uncouth Americans for having never developed centuries of statuary and architecture in thrall to their various incestuous monarchic reigns.
Your Engish friend exhibits a typical and erroneous view. Would that they have eyes to see. This is like people who think Michigan is metro Detroit. That's, like, 10% of Michigan. Take a drive up to the UP - THAT'S Michigan.
Same with the rest of the US. It's a great, big fucking place compared to Europe. Stay in the cities and you'll see trailer parks and strip malls. Take a drive more than 1/2 an hour in any direction in most places and it changes. And we're blessed with everything from the Great Lakes to mountains to deserts to the tundra.
Amazingly beautiful for one country, and with way more variety than any European country I can think of.
Anyhoo....
That's the thing, though. They're embedded in their own anal cavities thanks to centuries of civlizational stagnation; within two hundred years, we Americans have populated a continent, displaced its original inhabitants, and built an empire which now supplies the world, directly and indirectly, with the wonders of industrial and technological progress. Okay, not all of that is something to be proud of, but the fact is I'm describing it via a keyboard built in China but designed in California and made possible by capitalists here in the YOU ES OF AY. So these impotent fucks in Europe can winge on about their irrelevancy to the world economy as they're slowly taken over by migrants, and Americans will be doing cartwheels for the time being.

I am often surprised by ex-pat Euros who trash the US in conversation, but then find it extremely difficult to find their way to an airport to leave. Unless they'd married American and therefore had an easy way back.
Wife and I had a layover in Frankfort not long ago; we found a food stand that seemed to offer some interesting options. It was run by a guy (maybe 30?) who had been born in Frankfort, tried to return to Croatia and found 'it wasn't like he'd been told', and returned to Frankfort. But he lamented that in Germany, the best he could hope for was expanding his food service bizz; maybe 10%/year at best (if he could get approvals), compared to the opportunities in the US.
You're 'safe' in Euro; commie-kid and other juveniles find that safety comforting, almost like sucking on mommy's teat. Those who have grown up find it confining.
My last assignment was at Sheppard AFB. It's, among other things, a NATO pilot training base. The instructors and students were about a 50/50 mix of Americans and Europeans. Nearly all of them wanted to stay in the US. LOVED it here. And that was just shithole north central Tex-ass.

They all bitched in a narrow minded way in the first 3 years because they had no idea of anything outside the tiny little bubble they were currently visiting (NYC). Usually after 3 years, they'd done a little bit of travel in the US and saw what Almanian refers to as "everything else"
Brits who think America is "nothing but the same basic patchwork of franchises and trailer parks, etc." are just repeating something they heard on British Telly before they ever even came to the US. If they are in the US and actually say that to someone, just smile and go, "Well fuck back off to Slough or Luton or wherever you came from, and send us a postcard"
Way to go Warriors, lose in your own house to team that is coming out of a seven-game series with one day of rest.

They didn't so much lose it as give it away. I watched part of it; the beginning of the 3rd quarter seemed to define the game:
Warriors: "Here. Want the ball? Please take it".
Curry's good, but if you give the opponent the ball every second possession, well, even he can't make up for that sloppy play.
Did they not come out to play?

I thought the UN-recognized government had been driven out of Tripoli, and was operating from another city, maybe Benghazi. Are they back in Tripoli? Or is this a "coalition" of both previously competing "governments"? It's hard to tell the players without a scorecard. What probably should be done is to re-establish the Ghadaffy-style "Jamahiriya" government, but that isn't going to happen.
