That all depends on what it identifies as. Who are we to challenge it's lived experience?
Then what's Bluto?
We Plutonians strenuously object.
175) Based on my own experience, I am highly skeptical of the narrative around teacher seduction of high school students (not the start to a Penthouse letter, unfortunately). When I was in drama class in the 10th grade, our regular teacher was absent one day and we had a substitute, a 40-ish lady who was pretty good-looking for her age. We were supposed to rehearse for an upcoming play, but we mostly goofed off and joked around. At one point, I was sitting on a chair on stage, and the substitute teacher sat on my lap for several minutes.
I tried to play it off with witticisms but really, I was pretty embarrassed at this old lady sitting on my lap. I was not aroused, thrilled, or delighted by my good luck. The term didn't occur to me at the time, but this was clearly harassment.
On the other hand, neither was this a traumatic event. After a few weeks, I got over the initial embarrassment, and started to consider it sort of flattering. I'd always been a nerd and small for my age growing up, but at 15 I'd hit my growth spurt and was lifting weights with my step-dad. This incident did a lot to affirm the idea that I might be attractive to the opposite sex. I can't say others would respond the same way, but in the long run, for me, this teacher showing interest in me was a positive experience.
Was this a learning curve to the left or the right?
He got a clue.
A raging clue!
In 10th grade I would have been spending all my mental energy trying not to get aroused if a hot teacher sat on my lap.
*** thinking hard ***
"I wonder what she'd look like in a baseball uniform ...."
I would have been Spending my time getting aroused. Big tits.
This used to happen to me on a regular basis... then the alarm clock would go off.
What is the narrative? The victims sue the school districts because they can sue and win.
And on what basis do they win? That some sort of damage was done to them.
More than a few male statutory "rape" victims have said that they were undamaged by the events and were it not for the publicity they'd consider them positive experiences. It's obviously different for girls for fairly obvious reasons, or at least obvious to anyone who's not being intentionally obtuse to validate their own delusions of equality.
Actually according to the little research that exists on the subject roughly half of the "statutory rape victims" of both genders consider the experience to have been a beneficial or at worst a neutral one
You have a lot of experience seducing high school students?
Contrary to the common stereotype of libertarians, some of us did in fact have a lot of experience attempting to seduce high-school students back when we were in high school. Some of them were even attractive members of the opposite sex
Not enough. But it works often enough.
Most of the femaleteacher/malestudent stories I see put the teachers age in the mid to late 20's. Which is a far cry less traumatic (and somewhat understandable) than a supposed 40ish MILF.
Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby.
Second best thing to the Stanley Cup?
Ed Olczyk gave that pick a month ago.
The first four came in in order off odds. Those handicappers are getting damn good.
Or the horses were in on it.
*narrows gaze*
As a gesture of goodwill, we'll allow the Canadians to pet Nyquist.
Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby.
He only appeared faster due to aliasing.
Nice.
*applause*
Heavy petting?
But doesn't Nyquist contain stimulants to counteract the effects of the sedatives found in the regular *non* non-drowsy version of Nyquil? How can they let a horse doped up on cough syrup run in the Derby anyway?
Nyquist was twice as fast as the other horses.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says there'll probably be tax increases on the wealthy if he's elected.
He's playing all of Hillary's cards!
Just wait until he changes his name to Donna and plays the woman card.
With all the attacks on Hillary's enabling of and covering for Bill, he's been working to take the woman card away from her.
The latest Economist has an article on how the ultra-rich are funding all sorts of interesting private initiatives these days--huge, well-financed efforts to reach Alpha Centauri, eliminate malaria, and numerous other projects. And Trump wants to tax all these guys out of their fortunes to pay for more Medicaid, or whatever.
Just like any big government, central planner, Trump knows that money is going to get spent and he wants to be the one to decide on what.
"Yeah, but they're all doing it just to get even more rich."
-Progderp
Exactly. Unlike Bernie Sanders and his selfless devotion to others, and all that's accomplished.
Do you happen to recall the title of the article or have a link? I looked at the Economist website but couldn't find anything.
Unpossible! The NYT assures me that The Donald is a libertarian.
No doubt. It's the only thing more extreme than a conservative.
Is it just shy of or just past fascist on the extreme right wing?
Let's put it this way: Trump will have to bring his libertarianism down a few notches to get back to just being a Nazi.
So the NYT calls Trump a libertarian, and the Kochs "ultraconservative"?
*pounds head on desk*
Did the NY Times really claim this? If so do you have a link? The "reasoning" on that argument has to be hysterical.
No, Trump is playing Bernie's cards.

Testicle Battery would pretty much have to be a thrash-metal band, so half the "chicks" there would turn out to be just skinny dudes with long hair.

Residents of Austin voted to keep regulations that Uber and Lyft indicated would force them to leave the city.
Either the regs were touted in terms completely incorrect or voters in Austin are morons. Or, you know, some combination of the two.
In future news, a lawsuit brought against Uber and Lyft for collusion seeks to force both companies to continue operating in Austin.
Keep Austin Behind the Times!
Regs were touted completely incorrectly. The city made sure that the ballot language was as confusing and misleading as possible.
And Austin voters who show up for May votes with only one thing to vote on are, statistically speaking, progressive morons.
And Uber pushed way too hard. Started repeatedly text-spamming anybody who had ever ridden Uber to go vote the right way. I know more than one person who voted against Uber just because they got pissed off about that.
So, one more minor victory for the ratchet effect.
Yeah, I'm sure Uber will pass on all that revenue because they have to do background checks now.
China stocks plunge again as hopes for economic recovery fade
Apparently 90% of all the buying on the Chinese exchanges is being done by the government. There are no buyers.
So is this an economic thing, or a regulatory uncertainty thing? If the government is getting heavy handed in the market, I can see investors sitting on the sideline and looking for ways to protect what they have rather than growing their pot.
Propping up the market. Everyone is doing it. Japan is the buyer of 55% of all their ETFs and is the top ten shareholders of 90% of the traded companies in the Nikkei 225. The ECB is buying a trillion dollars of corporate bonds. The US PPT is actually more opaque than most, who knows what they're doing.
You know it must be a good investment if the lion-share of investors were brought to the table by a gun against their head.
So kind of like Ebay, except with governments.
Is that true? They don't try to root that out? Have you got a link? Would be curious to read about it.
So, is Hillary going to accept P.J.'s endorsement, or is this more of a David Duke thing?
"Well, just so you understand, I don't know anything about PJ O'Rourke. Okay? I don't know anything about what you're even talking about with humor or humorists. So, I don't know. I don't know, did he endorse me or what's going on, because, you know, I know nothing about PJ O'Rourke. I know nothing about humorists. And so you're asking me a question that I'm supposed to be talking about people that I know nothing about."
Whatever your views on Trump, it's hard not to be impressed by his eloquence.

ICE Just Blew $100K On Office Redo, Bathroom Renovations For Director
Where I used to work, an office redo of $7k raised eyebrows.
Yeah, but did the redo include secret rooms, soundproofing, state of the art surround sound, and a cage that dropped from the ceiling?

Nothing left to cut.
In all likelihood, the ICE director only has less than a few years left as a political appointee.
One has to wonder how seriously she takes her job if she's spending time on a $100k redecoration project.
If you're a political appointee and you think your party will be reelected, you spend $100k upgrading your office.
If you think your party will lose the election, you spend $10k redecorating your office in 1970s avocado kitchen style so that the political opponent who follows you will get drug over the coals for her future upgrade expenses.

Saw Captain America last night, and I loved it. As a pure action/superhero movie, I thought it was better than Nolan's Batman movies (those had better characters and narrative). But this was just so much damn fun with just enough depth to prevent it from feeling superfluous.
Surprisingly (for me), while I found myself philosophically siding with Captain America but not agreeing with all the individual choices that he made, and philosophically disagreeing with Tony Stark but agreeing with more of his actions in the moment. That dynamic was very well done.
All the good things people are saying about Black Panther and Spiderman are true. Even though Spiderman was very obviously forced into the story, he was entertaining enough that I think it improved the movie on balance.
Recommended.
I also liked it a lot. Though I'd rank it below winter soldier and the first Avengers movie.
Yes, neither spider-man nor ant-man needed to be in this movie. But without them the airport sequence just won't be the same.
And Robert Downey, Jr killed it. That was a great performance.
I liked Winter Soldier but it felt a little drawn out at times. I thought the pace here was better, and I enjoyed the additional actors. I also think the action was better (shaky cam aside). While the first Avengers was fun, it still felt like an origin story with all the associated trappings. I thought Civil War was a bit less formulaic.
Awesome. I look forward to seeing it at the Violet Crown with booze. 😀
That was my second movie there. It's a really nice theater.
I've only been once so far. The small theaters with the fully reclining seats are awesome. Prices for bottles of wine are fairly reasonable. I'd certainly rather have a $30 bottle of wine than spend $10 on two vats of soda.
When I first moved to CVille 5 years ago the theater that was there was sticky and smelled like piss. A pretty big improvement. 😀
sticky and smelled like piss
The Carmike, huh? Or are you talking about the Jefferson?
The former. The Jefferson doesn't smell bad at all. They replaced the nasty old Carmike with a really nice modern movie theater.

Having done a lot of kitchen remodels, I can assure you that kitchens can be designed with short vertically-challenged people in mind. But it'll cost you. Leg extensions might be cheaper. Conservative Scholar Lays Out What The War On Cops Does To America's Poor
I am now dumber for having read that.
Do you award zero points?
May God have mercy on your soul.
May god have mercy on her soul.
Actually, scratch that. Heather MacDonald is an idiot who deserves no mercy, only scorn.
MacDonald is the sort of 'bad ass authoritarian' who is okay with cops body slamming kids in schools.
Because war on cops.
This is where conservatives show they're equal to progressives in being apologists for dysfunctional problems that only impede meaningful reforms.
I would imagine inner-city residents desperately desire decent policing. But no matter what you think of BLM, the innumerable incidents of unjustified police violence and misconduct are not just made up. There's no war on cops--not the way they mean with the phrase--but the push-back against the police is largely the fault of their own corruption.
"I would imagine inner-city residents desperately desire decent policing"
Cop-suckers aren't able to differentiate between good policing and bad policing, so anyone who criticizes bad policing is actually in favor of no cops at all.
That's the straw man they set up to avoid allowing any criticism of cops.
And to be fair, once you get together a group of anti-cop activists you'll mostly hear "all cops are evil" type rhetoric. It just makes it easier for everyone on the other side to be a soulless demon, rather than having a conversation filled with nuance and conflicting experiences, incentives and goals.
In what sense is MacDonald a 'scholar?'
"bonds between police and local communities"
Citation needed.
Seriously, I don't think I've ever felt any kind of bond with the police. Anytime I have one of their cars pull up behind me, I'm mainly nervous that they'll decide to pull me over. I certainly don't have any warm fuzzies when I think of them.
Reminds me that I haven't heard much about Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels lately. And wasn't there a documentary one time about New York being turned into an open-air prison, fenced in with walls and razor wire and such to keep all the bad guys in one spot? IIRC, there was a truck driver trying to escape but they had some kind of kung-fu master prison guards he had to get past to get to his truck.
" New York being turned into an open-air prison, fenced in with walls and razor wire and such to keep all the bad guys in one spot? IIRC, there was a truck driver trying to escape but they had some kind of kung-fu master prison guards he had to get past to get to his truck."
That wasn't a documentary. That was a John Carpenter movie.
There are good and bad cops out there, but the lack of familiarity due to the consolidation of precincts mean you could live in one area and never see the same cop twice.
This McDonald guy sounds like a real clown.
Awwww...
This 'Sloth Institute' Looks After Baby Sloths That Lost Their Moms
Sam Trull, co founder of the Sloth Institute in Costa Rica, has been helping sloths return to the wild since 2013
Especially to photo of then giving the finger...
WTF?
*** gets coffee ***
My 2 cent defense for you: It's Monday and your dreams last night were haunted with images of today?
"helping sloths return to the wild since 2013"
Some of them have almost made it out the door by now.
I watched a documentary "A Sloth named Velcro" and learned that sloths need to go extinct. Seriously, how have they made it this far?
Revenant Megatherium DNA?
If megatherium is so bad ass why is he extinct?
They ate each until there was only one, and then the last one rose into the sky to eat and then become God
It won so much, it got bored of winning. Now... it waits.
If you crossed Hamster of Doom with Megatherium, you'd have someone who could reach the kitchen cabinets.
We went to see "Zootopia" last night, and the funniest part was when they went to the DMV, and all the workers there were sloths.
It was much funnier than it sounds.
Awesome
Yet ask nearly everyone involved with the production and they would want moar funding for moar government services.
Cashing in: Illegal immigrants get $1,261 more welfare than American families, $5,692 vs. $4,431
This can't be true, Reason Mag has assured me that illegal immigrants are radical libertarian/anarchists who would rather starve to death then receive even one taxpayer paid for cracker.
Look, it's America's obligation to play welfare-state to the world.
They also raped my mother and took a dump on my floor.
Try Winston AM, it won't make you drowsy so you can listen to whining all day long.
I really don't care about the color/country of orgin of the parasite, I just want it to stop feeding off me.
Yeah, I'm not really any happier about US citizens getting welfare than immigrants. I don't think immigrants pay any less in taxes than poor Americans.
FUCKING TREASON MAGAZINE WHYWHUT NO DEPROT ILLEGLES!?!?!?!
So stop giving immigrants welfare. That would be a whole fuck load easier than deporting millions of people and sealing the border.
But they can't identify who the immigrants are so they can kick them off the welfare rolls. That's why we have to find and deport them.
Wouldn't booting legal immigrants off welfare actually incentivize illegal immigration since that way you could just get fraudulent documentation and get welfare benefits that legal immigrants aren't allowed to get? It would actually pay to be undocumented in that situation.
So really the only way to deal with this is to eliminate welfare entirely, which isn't happening any time soon
Why couldn't legal immigrants get fraudulent documentation?
Because they are law abiding folks, duh.
I think either of these has exactly zero chance of happening.
If true, then western civilization and European peoples are destined for a near-term extinction. Some people consider it racist to care about that. Other people have children and so their time-horizon extends a little further than their next hedonistic impulse.
Enh... at some point the US and Europe become less attractive destinations. The US is already seeing more Mexicans leave than arrive. The welfare problem will solve itself, too - eventually.
At whose cost? One problem that a shining city on a hill faces is that everyone outside of the city wants to take a piece of it for themselves, as easily as possible. I don't think it's a good solution that you burn down the city to insulate against looters.
But the thing is, no one is going to make that choice. Sealing off borders is politically and practically unlikely. So is cutting off welfare. No one on either side of the debate is going to get the policies they really want. That's what always happens. Top down control like that never works. The only thing that works is a self regulating system like what Rhywun is talking about.
I'm not saying people should stop arguing for what they think is best. I keep saying we should have no welfare state and pretty open borders. You should keep arguing for what you think is good. But what is really going to happen is more like what Rhywun says. Things will suck to some degree and hopefully before things get too bad, some self-limiting factor will come into play.
An artificial system of subsidized immigration and artificial impediments on economic liberty could hardly be described as a "self-regulating" system. There's not going to be a natural solution arising from artificially introduced factors. Things are already "too bad". We're seeing the results of an irreversible social experiment hoisted upon society by the state.
An artificial system of subsidized immigration and artificial impediments on economic liberty could hardly be described as a "self-regulating" system.
I disagree. Ultimately everything is in one way or another. If things are already too bad, and it's truly irreversable, then we're fucked and there is nothing to be done and we should stop worrying about it and try to have some fun instead and make the most of what we've got.
Just because it's irreversible doesn't mean it can't get worse. It's irreversible that you cut off my foot, but I'm not going to sit back and relax while you take my hands. ('you' in the general sense)
High time preference hedonism is how we got where we are. Whether it's material hedonism, or emotional hedonism. I won't sit back an take it. I will shout from the rooftops what a scourge these policies are. I have children and hypothetical grand children to consider when I see the direction of society, unlike the Frau Merkels of the world.
And I don't mean to say that the systems of welfare and immigration created by governments are self-regulating. The actual real interactions of people are.
Maybe in the absence of welfare statism and in the presence of free association. Unfortunately the inverse is the present circumstance all across western civilization.
You seem to still be missing my point. Even tyrannical governments and stupid policies are ultimately self-regulating since you can't spend money that doesn't exist and you can only push people so far.
I'm not saying that that means that everything is going to be fine. It may well mean that everything goes to shit before anything turns around. I'm saying that that is what is likely to happen.
That's my practical view of the world. I also think that we should keep arguing for whatever we individually think is the better way. Just don't expect it to happen.
It's a study put out by a "non-partisan research" organization that just so happens to also promote policy prescriptions. Their raw numbers don't quite add up when you look at their averages compared to government figures on spending and households. And if you're suggesting we need more government spending to address the issue of too much government spending, I'd like to see the math on that rather than just an assertion - a la Bernie Sanders and his free college - that increased spending pays for itself.
And this is my big bitch - as people like Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams have been pointing out for years, comparing economic statistics by household is bullshit if you don't adjust for the household demographics. (The Dems for years have been producing statistics showing how stagnant household income has been since the '70's without taking into consideration that with divorced and single-parent and just plain singles households, there are more happier people in their own relatively poorer households rather than living in a relatively wealthier household because they can't afford to move out on their own.) If immigrants live three families and 14 people to the household and non-immigrants live one family and three people to the household, who gets more welfare? Do immigrant and non-immigrant households look like that? Who knows? They didn't look at that, which makes the research at least a little questionable.
I was away for most of last week, so apologies if this has been posted previously:
Obama's top foreign-policy guy is arrogant douche creative writing major, openly boasts of feeding lies to water-carrying media
Who the hell keeps a giant photograph of their boss kissing babies over their desk?
Obama demands a bizarre sycophantic devotion from all of his staff. I recently toured the White House, and there's seriously photos of Great Moments in the Obama Presidency posted everywhere. You must be in constant awe of how transformative and inspiring he is. It's disturbingly cult-like.
Obama's entire persona excites cult-like devotion among his followers that borders on worship. They fawn over every detail of his life like an 11-year old girl squealing with delight after reading about the Jonas Brothers' favorite colors in some teenybopper magazine.
Whenever I talk to someone who supports him, it's obvious that they are just entranced and in love with the man, making it completely impossible to say anything negative about him. I have occasionally been successful in cornering them on certain Obama fuckups (covering for the NSA, starting wars, etc.) and they usually defer to one of these tactics:
- Abruptly change the subject
- Lay the blame with either state governments or someone in the federal government who was appointed by a Republican
- Explain all of the bad things as after-effects of Bush II or - somewhat puzzlingly - Reagan.
- Just ruminate on how horrible McCain or Romney would have been
Their faces are tortured and conflicted during these conversations. It's like they know deep down that Obama has been a huge fuckup, but they can't bring themselves to speak ill of Big Brother out loud. I'm hoping to break through to some of these people, but it's very difficult when Republicans keep doing incredibly stupid shit and driving them back into Obama's arms (oh yea, and most of them are still stuck in the two-party mindset).
Who the hell keeps a giant photograph of their boss kissing babies over their desk?
It bore repeating.

Baseball Dopers' New Drug Is an Old One Used by East Germany
North Carolina needs to keep this drug out if it's bathrooms!
*head explodes*
Most athletes are shockingly naive about the drugs they take. I mean, for fuck's sake, Mark McGuire was taking androstenedione. Because apparently he wanted all the side effects of real steroids and none of the benefits.
So how long did the writer sit there trying to figure out how to put that into a phrase that could be published?
They are probably already at 4 Problematics for this line alone:
"The side effects are horrendous, particularly to women," he said.
I wish that guy hadn't run out of steam. He is A-list funny.

Non-believer snaps 'Grim Reaper' kneeling by grave in cemetery
Like with a wet towel or something?
Must've been the salmon mousse.
Yeah, totally. I believe this story 100%.
Doesn't the Grim reaper show up when you are alive to make you dead? A grave yard seems an odd place for such a being to be hanging out. A hospital or a battlefield seems the more likely place to see him.
He's doing it ironically. The Grim Reaper is actually a bit of a hipster.
Normally I hate when movies/tv shows veer too far from source novels (Starship Troopers), but I would like someone to buy the rights to The Incarnations of Immortality and make a series without the magic aspect. In our world, not the science/magic on par world.
I really need to be in charge of programming at sci-fi (first step, change name back) network.
That was a good series.
I should have known that. The black robes were the tell.
Why would the Grim Reaper already be visiting dead people?
"Hey, just checking in, making sure you're still dead."
If you see the Reaper in a graveyard it means someone's been buried alive.......
At some point someone needs to be honest with the American public. We have an enormous deficit and a huge debt. The choices are higher taxes, large spending cuts, or national bankruptcy. If people are not willing to support spending cuts, then they are going to have to accept tax increases and not just increases on the "rich" but broad based ones that hit the middle class. I would obviously prefer spending cuts. But I would take taxes over bankruptcy.
Trump sadly didn't say that. What he said was once again a great piece of political trolling. What are the Democrats going to say in response? And moreover, the really wealthy tend to be Democrats and like to pretend they will pay more but in reality don't want to but would never admit that. So what are they going to say?
You could raise taxes and then go bankrupt or cut taxes and go bankrupt. Any increase in tax revenues will be hoovered up by the bureaucrats regardless.
^This.
The bureaucrats don't spend money, Congress does. So place the blame in the right place. It is all about Congress. And Congress is nothing but a reflection of the public. Until the public understands that more government isn't free and can't always be paid for by other people, it will never stop.
If people won't support cutting the government, they should have to pay more taxes to at least try and pay for it. Even if the extra money all gets spent, you at least made the public feel some pain for supporting big government.
Pretty sure bureaucrats spend money. But I get the point. Personally, I don't see anyway out of the tsunami of debt other that default. They're going to feel the pain regardless of whether spending is cut or taxes are raised. Raising taxes will hurt many of those who were productive at the expense of those who weren't, so I'm not for that route.
They only spend money that Congress appropriates. In fact, they have to spend the money and only the money Congress appropriates. They are nothing but instruments of Congress. They don't spend a dime unless Congress tells them to do so.
Again, I get that. How would giving congress more money result in them paying off the debt when they have shown to be capable of only doing the opposite? The income tax was started to hit only the top 1% and now it's hitting the entire middle class. The get more, they spend more.
They also make sure every last dime gets spent so they can justify their budgets and justify increasing their budget next year.
Bureaucrats are a big part of the problem. The incentives for them to save money aren't there.
The more they spend, the more they get. If they save money, they get their budget next year cut so if the current year is a fluke with low spending, they have to find ways to spend it (redecorating offices, maybe?).
Until we figure out a way to get bureaucrats to save money, the budget will continue growing.
Federal programs never die. Every time they try to kill one, they trot out the one person the program helped to give a moving speech on the Congressional floor and the program gets renewed at a cost of $100,000,000 per teen pregnancy prevented.
Federal teen pregnancy programs in existence
Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program
Personal Responsibility Education Program
Title V Abstinence Education
Adolescent Family Life Program
Community-Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) Program
Competitive Abstinence-Only Grants
Medicaid Family Planning
Title X Family Planning
Maternal and Child Health block grant
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Title XX Social Services block grant
CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health
Plus a myriad number of federally funded programs at the state and community level
Sure they never die. And that is because the public for the large part doesn't pay for them.
That's true. But it seems to me that some enterprising congresscritter could draw attention to the duplication in government and mock it mercilessly in the media. I assume that the reason that they don't is because they don't want to. The DNC and GOP certainly don't have an interest in it.
Tom Coburn spent years doing just that. Know why you've never heard of his Wastebook report? Because it has no media penetration outside right-wing journalism, which is to say, no media penetration.
What do you mean the public doesn't pay for them?
The public pays for every penny the government spends.
If people won't support cutting the government, they should have to pay more taxes to at least try and pay for it
There are huge numbers of people voting for these programs who pay no federal income taxes at all. Good luck fixing that.
$20 trillion coin. Boom. Problem. Solved.
You're welcome.
No one wants honesty though, and it's hard to vote for it. It's like telling someone who really needs to lose weight that taking three 20 minute walks every week isn't cutting it. Or going once to an exercise class with 2-lb weights. Or that their "diet" is actually making it harder for them to lose weight. People will shake their heads in disbelief and avoid the truth like crazy.
You forgot 1970s style inflation and hyper-inflation, unless you include those in the set of methods to accomplish bankruptcy.
Trump is the only candidate ever who can take 3 different policy positions in the same interview.
Flight delayed when woman mistakes Differential Equations as terrorism writing
I'll admit that my grad course in partial diffy q's invoked terror. The text was translated from the original Russian, poorly.
Differential equations is what terrified me out of an engineering degree. It's an evil subject.
One day I'm going to have to dig into the theory behind it. I learned it by rote, but from my understanding of mathematics, there is no reason one would even try to take the derivative, or anti-derivative... let alone that it would actually mean something important. It should be jibberish - on the order of taking all of the vowels in a paragraph and moving them one word to the left.
but from my understanding of mathematics, there is no reason one would even try to take the derivative, or anti-derivative
...What? 1) The rate of change with respect to a variable has all sorts of physical meanings, depending on the system you're studying, and the same goes for the integral. 2) In any case, one of the great achievements of mathematics over the last 200 year or so is the jettisoning of the idea that a term has to have a physical interpretation to be meaningful.
With the interesting aspect that the abstract mathematical terms end up having a physical meaning. It is odd ( at first) how often imaginary numbers come up in engineeting, for example.
Right, precisely.
Related: Alice's tea party is a satirization of quaternions.
The joke ends up being on Lewis Carroll, of course, as anyone who's taken a robotics or computer graphics course knows. Fuck Euler angles, nigga.
You misunderstand my confusion. I know what you use derivatives for.... I just don't know why they work that way because I never explored it.
It is not intuitively obvious that turning x^3 into 3x^2 should mean anything.
I know this is well understood and super-basic if you are a theoretical mathematician and there are plenty of resources I could take advantage of to learn about it....I just never took the time to wade through it. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be one of those topics that is amenable to the cliff's notes treatment.
That example you gave is very straight forward from the definition of a derivative. It is high school level calculus to understand WHY the derivative of x^3 is 3x^2.
Cliff notes version:
df/dx = lim as ?x0 (f(x+?x) -f(x))/?x is definition of derivative
Plug in x^3 and 2 minutes of algebra and boom, done.
I don't think his question is about how to do it.
His question, I think, is why taking the first derivative gives you slope and the second derivative gives you rate of change.
It's almost like magic that it works like that. Again, not how/why to do it, but how/why doing so gives you those very specific answers.
The formula explains that. Your rate of change is change/time, take the limit as time goes to zero and you have the formula for the immediate rate.
Just like some code is self commenting, not all formulas need descriptions.
The derivative is the rate of change. That's what it was invented to be and why it's important and applicable in pretty much any field that uses numbers/math.
But it wasn't "invented;" it was discovered. It's a relation that was always there, whether or not anyone knew it.
Oh, FFS! Everyone responsible for this bullshit should lose their jobs.
It sounds like it was only the woman. She lied to the flight attendant and said she was too sick to fly, so they turned around and went back to the gate. When they got there the woman said the thing about the terror equations. They looked, realized it was bullshit, and went on, without the woman, because she was stupid.
But the woman lost her job, right? RIGHT?!
The woman was a passenger
Don't matter none. Fuck her.
Math is hard.
Ironically, the economist's area of specialization is search theory. That is, methods for determining what information and how much information should be considered before making a decision (e.g. I can make a decision with the information I have now, or I can collect additional piece of information X. Without knowing beforehand what X is, is the expected increase value from improving my decision by incorporating X likely to be more than the cost of delaying my decision and obtaining X?)

It might actually be fun to hear Rush and Coulter contort themselves as they explain that conservatives were always for raising taxes a little and raising the minimum wage.
The more fun would be them explaining how exactly the government is going to maintain the spending levels they want and pay down the debt and never raise any taxes. No one seems to live in anything like the real world.
Also, I hate taxes as much as anyone but they are not sacrosanct. If I were president, I would agree to raise taxes, if Congress wanted to give me enough of what I did want in return. Part of the reason why the Republicans are such failures at government is they never call the Democrats' bluff and offer to give them what they want in return for something they really don't want and the Republicans do.
For example, when the Congress and Obama were having a standoff over Obamacare, the Republicans should have passed amnesty and given Obama a bill that repealed Obamacare but gave him the amnesty he wanted. Let him either sign it and be able to actually have accomplished something or let him veto it and explain to Hispanics why he loves Obamacare more than he cares about them. Republicans never do things like that. They just demand to get it their way and then end up giving the Democrats half of what they want in return for nothing and calling it a compromise.
Thanks that probably is what they'll say to snake out of the corner they painted themselves into.
Their hero came out in favor of raising the minimum wage, so I wonder how they explain that away too.
I don't really care what they say. My point was a larger one and not about Trump or this election. As much as I hate the Democrats and don't want them to get their way, they do hold a lot of seats in Congress and the support of a lot of the American public. So, you can't just say fuck you that is why. So the question is what do you want to give them. The answer to that question is that it depends on what they want to give me. No one ever looks at it that way.
Its like George HW Bush. He said he would never raise taxes. Sure enough he did but he did get a pretty decent deal in return and set up a framework that lead to the reductions in the deficit that occurred under Clinton. Was that a bad deal? Was Bush wrong for signing it or stupid for drawing an absolute line about taxes? I think it is more the latter.
He was about as stupid for drawing that line as it was to draw one about Syrian chemical weapons. Ultimatums are rarely a great idea.
You are correct. And drawing them just makes you look unreasonable.
I'm with you on that one. And it underscores your point about tactics. The Democrats in Congress under Bush I made no bones about it - they were willing to wreck the economy in order to get Bush to break his no tax pledge. They were all-in on that one, and very publicly so. He wasn't going to get any bills without a tax increase stuck on, and they were going to blame him for any government shutdowns or lapses in services.
Cut spending to 15% of gdp and taxes dont need to be touched. With the 3-4% surplus, we will eat upthe national debt in no time.
We need a Democratic President like Jefferson and Jackson...without the genocide.
That would work for me. But it wouldn't work for many Democrats. Let me ask you, what if you did both and said we would raise taxes but only if the Congress cut spending. If you could actually get a real cut in the size of government (I know that is a huge assumption), would you be willing to live with higher taxes? I think I would. As it is, I get nothing. At least with this I would see the size of the government go down in return for higher taxes.
My point isn't that this particular idea is the best or even possible. My point is that we are going to have to do something like that to ever accomplish anything. We are never going to just take over and get our way for nothing.
If they agree to cap spending at 15% of gdp, i would let them set the tax rate.
They would probably manage to raise taxes enough to run a deficit again.
If you could actually get a real cut in the size of government (I know that is a huge assumption), would you be willing to live with higher taxes?
Real cuts in the size of government are a political impossibility. Real cuts mean government workers will lose their jobs, contractors will lose their jobs, special interests will lose their funding, people will cease to get their subsidies, or some combination thereof. No matter how you slice it, it's going to piss a lot of people off. Not only that, but it will piss off their friends, their families, and other businesses who depend on these people spending they money. So much so that it simply will not happen. So any compromise that is hinged upon real cuts in government is a fool's errand. There won't be any cuts. Period. Not until the entire system implodes.
It is a huge number of people. I don't think 15% of GDP even covers entitlements. If you eliminated the military and all discretionary spending you might get to the 15% number.
A quick google check says no. According to this, entitlements are currently 19% of GDP
No one is entitled to entitlements.
My great grandpa was po' as dirt. Worked his keester off and put my pa through collige. Pa made allotta money and I blew it all on hookers and weed.
Then you were doing exactly what the the Federal Reserve, Democrats, and Paul Krugman wanted you to do.
Seriously.
It should in theory be pretty simple, just state "I will veto any budget which does not run a 5% surplus and approve any budget that does, how Congress achieves that surplus is up to them"
Then actually follow through with it, let the government shut down until such time as Congress is forced to tackle the budget in a serious manner
C'mon, you are old enough to remember when Bush I tried to make a sort-of "grand compromise", breaking his read my lips promise. Team Blue hung his ass out to dry.
I do agree with your sentiment - They should agree to raise taxes, but they need cuts at about 6 to 1 to make it work. That's how they fixed things in the socialist utopia Scandinavian countries that the left is always praising.
I remember that. And the compromise turned out pretty well. Bush set the stage for the reduced deficits and economic boom that Clinton took credit for creating. Yeah, it didn't turn out well for Bush personally but it turned out pretty well for the country.
Republicans never do things like that.
And thank God, at the end of it they'd send up a bill that passes amnesty and preserves the ACA. Congressional Republicans, at best, are a roadblock.
Reagan did that with Tip O'Neill in 1982, agreeing to raise various excise taxes in exchange for spending cuts. The Democrats in the House raised the taxes, all right, but "forgot" about cutting the spending.
We're taxed too much already. Cut spending.
Start with a 10 percent reduction in the federal workforce. Anyone who was "non-essential" in the last government shutdown should be laid off. Then cut the remaining federal workers' salaries by 10 percent, and freeze them for 4 years. Then stop giving new federal employees guilded pension plans.
I saw Gary Johnson on CNN this weekend with Michael Smerconish. I really wanted to be impressed. I really wanted to be able to confidently vote for the guy, and convince others to do so.
Unfortunately, he came off as bewildered, unprepared, and desperate.
At the end of the segment, he was literally begging Smerconish and CNN to "get him into the polls" because without being in the polls, he had no shot.
Pathetic.
He was probably high
He was right though. The networks keep third parties out of the polls, which means that third parties can never be part of the debates, which means that nobody knows about them. The major parties got scared after Perot in 1992 and stacked the deck so no third party would ever be able to impress people in a debate again.
I saw him on MTP. He did pretty well.
I think McAfee would pull more votes this time.
Yep. I saw him get his ass handed to him by a low-level Obama staffer on CNN in 2012. The problem is tone and body language.
He won the argument, but it sure didn't look that way on screen. His attempts to look calm, collected, and mature came off as weak. She was nutty, but came of as smart and strong in her convictions.
He's a terrible candidate, and that was even before he signed off on cakes-at-gunpoint.
I imagine that, if Johnson got into the debates, within the first few minutes Trump would say something like, "Several months ago, I said that Jeb was low-energy. After seeing this Johnson, I owe Jeb an apology."
He was just on Smerconish's radio show and came across fairly well. Smerconish did mention that Gary didn;t do as well on his CNN show. Also purely unscientific but after the interview Smerconish took calls and 90%+ were feeling the Johnson. So there's that.
It's practically criminal that pollsters exclude the LP option. Especially this year when no one likes the D or R guys, and the LP guy is more qualified.

I am back from Puerto Rico.
Some thoughts:
There is a lot of poverty in San Juan (and outlying areas) but I still saw some beautiful Porsches and a lime-green Lambo. And people sleeping on the streets.
Plenty of aggressive panhandling, even near the Vanderbilt hotel I stayed at.
HUMID! The 80 degree weather felt like 90+, at least according to my Michigan bones.
If you like bars over your house windows, walls, and barbed-wire on top of your walls, then Puerto Rico should be included in your travel future.
Tipping is expected - everywhere.
Old San Juan is all up hill - all the time.
If you get a chance, stop by "Marilyn's Place", a bar in Old San Juan, with pictures of Marilyn everywhere. There is also a bar cat there, who will sit on your lap if he's in the mood.
Apparently a gin & tonic in Puerto Rico consists of 90% gin and 10% tonic.
The food was remarkably good, but, oddly enough, the best meal I had was at a Middle Eastern restaurant where the orders were delivered by model railroad.
Great beaches. Lovely ladies - I would say a good 20% of them were in 8+ territory.
It is a real shame it got infected with socialism. it is a beautiful place and the Puerto Ricans are as a rule wonderful people who have beautiful women and know how to have fun. When you realize how great it could be and how fucked up socialism has made it, it makes you want to just shoot the various leftist assholes who made it the way it is.
Puerto Rico sounds a lot like a summer in NYC.

But Wired told me the only reason they're having problems is because they've had so much economic success!
Bread so good, citizens line up for it! Toilet paper so good, clerks can't keep the shelves stocked! Zero carbon electricity generation!
That's the glorious success of Bolivarian democratic socialism.
And all you guys do is complain.
What are they going to do? Open the country to capitalism so the greedy corporations can get rich while enslaving them with shit-jobs, selling them shit-products from China, creating massive inequality, all while looting their natural resources? I think not. Better to live in shared misery than allow capitalists to get rich.
It's right there, sarc. All they had to do was invest in their crumbling infrastructure.
Why do governments build infrastructure if it is always crumbling. Seems inefficient. They should invest in non-crumbling infrastructure. Then there would be more money to loot.
Either Salon or Slate, I forget which, was saying that their issues with electricity is because things had gone so well economically that the demand had outstripped the supply. It was just a sign of how successful the country had been. It was just a victim of it's own success.
I am not kidding.
It was Wired.

They must be starting to lose money on his predictions or something. Personally, I had this con artist pegged years ago.

But for some odd reason, even some Reason contributors continue to talk about him as if he's some sort of prognosticating genius. I wonder why that is.

Good to see Warty make the Sun.
Please. Like I would have that bad of tattoos.
That was a bit disappointing. I get it wanting to be strong and fit. But i don't understand why anyone would ever want to be that big. To me that guy looks as uncomfortable and unnatural as some enormous fat guy. I should be a lot stronger and fitter than I am. I admit that. So this isn't sour grapes. But even if you gave me a way to be as fit and as strong as I wanted and still be the lazy bastard I am, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near as big as that guy. I would want to look like a heavyweight boxer.
It takes a lifetime of dedication to get that big. No one does it by accident, and it's not possible to look that way without a staggering amount of pharmaceuticals. Here's an enjoyable (to me) academic essay about it.
Yeah, that is a lifetime of work. Good for him if that is what works for him. But I wouldn't want that. To me it is about usable strength. What is the point of being strong if you don't also have some nimbleness and general athleticism to go with it?
There are seven letters in SPECIAL for a reason.
How about the Crossfit gals? They are athletic, they have useable strength and some of them actually look damn good.

SJWs have complained about God of War being horribly misogynistic, which makes this really delicious.
The complaints about the game being 'misogynistic' are themselves idiotic. Basically, he stomped on the face of a Fury and because Furies look like women, this was like woman beating...or something. Never mind that they're not really women since they're spirits of vengeance and all.
But what if a Fury identifies as a woman?
What about women who identify as Furies?

FEAR! PANIC! 1500% increase in the number of kids poisoned by e-cigarettes!
The number of children under 6 poisoned by nicotine in e-cigarettes rose by nearly 1,500% between 2013 and 2015, and one child died, according to an analysis of calls to the National Poison Data System published in the journal Pediatrics.
Later in the article:
The number of children exposed to e-cigarette products each month rose from 14 in January 2012 to 223 in April 2015.
"On average, every three hours, a poison center receives a call about a young child exposed to an e-cigarette or liquid nicotine," said the study's senior author, Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. "That's more than seven children each day."
How many actually are poisoned?
The numbers of accidental poisonings skyrocketed because of the explosive popularity of e-cigarettes, Smith said
Horseshit.
"This is not primarily a parenting problem," Smith said.
Horseshit.
I read the whole article, and I don't see any count of children actually poisoned, though the article does mention one child dying. I see counts of calls to poison centers about exposure, but no actual poisoning. The dose makes the poison, how do we know the exposure is poisoning?
"The number of children under 6 poisoned by nicotine in e-cigarettes rose by nearly 1,500% between 2013 and 2015, and one child died"
There are tens of millions of children in this country and one died from nicotine poisoning.
Everybody panic.
But what if it's your kid, huh?
Must outlaw these things because kids are copying what their parents put in their mouths.

I think I should get some caffeine before I comment. One child dying counts as a poisoning, and I mention that child dying in the previous sentence. Shit. Caffeine time.
I don't have kids. I have no intention of ever having kids. In fact, I do everything in my power to avoid other people's kids, too.
Now tell me I can't vape. Or smoke. Or drug.
You not having kids is not an obstacle the nannies will let stand in their way. They'll tell you you can't vape/smoke/drug. FYTW.
Of course he won. Everyone knows short races like the Derby are horribly aliased.
And wasn't he like twice as fast as the other horses they sampled?
Trump Just Exploded the Only Reason the Republican Party Exists: Cutting Taxes for the Wealthy
There's no such thing as opposition to socialism. There's a broad 99% consensus that everything the Democrat Party does is an unmitigated good. All apparent opposition is just rich people tricking stupid rethuglikkkans into voting against their own interest. And who says the left is intellectually bankrupt? NO ONE.
I think it's amazing the number of cliches you see in left-wing articles. They all say the same thing over and over and over again.
I can't remember the last time I read an original idea in an article written by a leftist. Probably about when Hitchens died.
Leftists don't have ideas. They have feelings. That's why the cliches work so well. They trigger feelings like envy and hatred, and it's OK because the envy and hatred is directed at people who deserve it.
"We must hate - hatred is the basis of communism."
-- Lenin
Hitchens, to his credit, disavowed his affinity for Marxism and actually went on to proclaim capitalism as the most "revolutionary economic system" and genuine force for human well-being in existence.
+1 for not claiming that he "literally exploded" it, I guess...
Donald Trump EVISCERATED the Republican's only reason for existing!
He literally DECIMATED it by completely annihilating it.
But alas, did include "literally feeds off largesse".
Wait a minute. Keeping your own money is the same as making money? Oh yeah. Not giving is taking, and not taking is giving. I forgot for a moment.
Taking the author at his word that the right-wing infrastructure literally feeds on the largesse of wealthy individuals, how is that worse than the left-wing infrastructure feeding on the largesse of stolen loot and government force?
Trump is just coming around to what everyone else already knows, the only right thing to do is to tax the rich so that we can expand our weak and antiquated social benefit programs. We spend less than any other first world country on social benefits. How can we even call ourselves a first world country? We're living in the Stone age while other countries boldly move forward. Now even Republicans agree that we have to finally make the rich pay their fair share.
Very true. As we all know, the rich do not pay their fair share. I mean, how could they have? They're still rich!
No one needs billions of dollars. They could be taxed at 90%, which would only be fair and they would still have millions. They would still be rich. They would still be rich and then we could give all people their basic human rights, like free college and free healthcare. Like every other first world country in the world already does.
You posting name is a perfect example of how you libertarians think. This is all a joke to you, but it's not a joke to those who are suffering having no healthcare and no higher education.
I am assuming sarcasm, because this is just too perfect to be real.
PracticalMan is my new favorite commenter.
Why would it not be real. Of course I am real. Now that everyone agrees wouldn't that seem obvious? The Republicans have finally realized the truth and are joining the Democrats to move the country forward. You libertarians are being left behind.
You libertarians are being left behind.
Except for our property. You really, really want to get your hands on it.
Please explain to me what is one's "fair share," sir. It seems to me that the rich already pay the overwhelming majority of taxes in this country.
Actually, I already know the answer to this one: MOAR!!!1!!!!!111!!!!!
No one needs billions of dollars.
Except the U.S. Government, apparently.
No, kbolino, they don't need billions of dollars, they need trillions. All those greedy rich people are just greeding up all the money. Everyone agrees with this!!!11!!11!!!!
And they are using that to help the poor and desperate women and children of the country who have been ran down in the streets and left to die by the billionaires for far too long. How can anyone not be for giving them more?
poor and desperate women and children of the country who have been ran down in the streets and left to die
Cite? Link? Any actual facts to support this appeal to emotion?
Truly, no one can be this far up their own ass.
Truly, no one can be this far up their own ass.
I wish this were true but sadly it is reconfirmed every day.
B+
Good job
It's true, PracticalMan. I can't even walk to the bus stop without seeing a bunch of poor women and children huddled in the streets, dying from lack of healthcare, while a billionaire stands over them, holding a sack with a dollar sign on it and laughing. It's truly harrowing, this sad country we're in. And when I think about how bad things were before the experts (our superiors in all matters and to whom we should give all of our money, nay, our lives) and Barack H. Christ (Praise unto his name!) gave us Obamacare...the memories are just too dark to express
How can anyone not be for giving them more?
Then do it with your own fucking money, slaver. No one is preventing you from doing that.
Oh, you mean you think other people should pay for it, and not you.
I can't even walk to the bus stop without seeing a bunch of poor women and children huddled in the streets, dying from lack of healthcare, while a billionaire stands over them, holding a sack with a dollar sign on it and laughing.
I have a huge erection now
I'm assuming that my sarc detector is working just fine, so correct me if I'm wrong but I didn't detect any here.
How would that be fair? And you're telling me that once the left gets their way with 90% of someone else's stuff, they'll just stop? The left, the looters, they never stop. You give them an inch, they will come back for a mile.
How is free college and free healthcare a "human right"? Is enslaving others a human right?
Oh no, we're deadly serious about justice and intellectual honesty. You are the joke, your ideas and your complete lack of critical thinking is a joke. I'd laugh more often if you people weren't such greedy little thieving monsters.
Actually the biggest problem with this statement...
"No one needs billions of dollars. They could be taxed at 90%, which would only be fair and they would still have millions. They would still be rich."
Is how utterly lacking in understanding of how wealth and money work.
What they don't grasp is that the overwhelming majority of the "income" of the wealthy is realized capital gains, not cash payments. Sure you get a few athletes, movie stars, and other celebrities who can rake in $100 million or maybe even a little more in direct cash payments between their direct work and endorsements but for most of them, taxing them at 90% is literally impossible without directly seizing physical assets or nationalizing huge swathes of the stock market because that is where their wealth is and there is no actual pile of money sitting around from which they can pay those taxes
Yes, of course, but you are also talking about people that think 'money' equals 'wealth'. They are illiterates.
taxing them at 90% is literally impossible without directly seizing physical assets or nationalizing huge swathes of the stock market
This is, of course, the end-game for socialists. An honest socialist understands what nationalizing the means of production really means. The rest are intellectually dishonest, vacuous trolls for whom socialism just means getting more government graft.
I doubt that.
Okay, an honest socialist admits that socialism is not a system of tax-and-spend policies, but national control of industry. Most socialist sympaticos of the Bernie variety either don't know or don't admit what socialism entails.
Fair enough 🙂
Is how utterly lacking in understanding of how wealth and money work.
Isn't that a basic requirement for being a leftist?
And all those first world countries are poorer than us. Fuck off, slaver.
Another great point. It's not like the rich will change their behavior if they're taxed at 90%. They'll still draw the exact same compensation and happily give most of it to the government, and then the government can use it to provide basic needs for the poor, like education, heath care, internet, smart phones, home computers, Nike shoes...
Just let me respond to the three of you here. Free Society and robc, I detect some hostility here. I didn't come here to your chat room to cause friction or fight with you. I came to educate, so that you libertarians can finally join the rest of us and move the country forward with us.
The rich will not change their behavior or leave. The rest of the world have already came to realize that we can no longer live in a free for all, winner take all society where the strong crush and oppress the weak and poor. There is nowhere for them to go. Wherever they go, they will find they must start paying their fair share.
The problem with you libertarians are that you are not serious. The first sign of this is that you don't respect our leaders and experts. This is a serious problem. We cannot move forward without our leaders and experts to solve our problems and guide us forward.
The first sign of this is that you don't respect our leaders and experts.
I don't respect your leaders and experts. There's a difference. Just because you put a fancy hat on a man's head and call him king does not mean he deserves to wear the crown and wield the scepter.
We cannot move forward without our leaders and experts to solve our problems and guide us forward.
If you can't solve any problems on your own, then you can hardly choose the right leaders and experts to solve problems for you. This is a serious problem. You are a child who wishes to be governed by parents, but you refuse to listen to any real adults.
Ha, I was buying it right up to the leaders and expert line, nice job.
I didn't come here to your chat room to cause friction or fight with you.
Go back to YouTube, shitburger.
This is satire, right? It's so hard to tell anymore.
Also, based on your user name, Fuck utilitarianism.
If you give me a chance at my catchphrase trifecta, this will be gold...come on carbon tax.
You need to have something to offer in order to educate. You have nothing to offer but the "sucess story" of millions of dead, hundreds of millions more enslaved in the last century. And if you detect hostility, it's origin is with the person advocating mass theft, mass enslavement and mass murder and imprisonment for those that resist.
A world-wide hegemony of thieving murderers does not exactly prove your point that it's a superior social system.
The serious problem is that so many "leaders and experts" are as morally deficient and painfully ignorant as you are.
I came to educate, so that you libertarians can finally join the rest of us and move the country forward with us.
Sorry, but we libertarians understand the leftist perspective even better than most leftists, because we understand that good intentions don't magically turn into good results. We understand that the economy is guided by human action, but not human design. We understand that in a free market, the only way to get rich is to make lots and lots of people happy. We understand that your leaders and experts cannot possibly have the knowledge to make decisions for millions of other people, each of whom live in a unique set of circumstances.
Unfortunately, we also understand that most leftist cannot understand any of the things I just listed, because you are guided not by the ability to use rational thought that sets human beings apart from animals, but instead by base emotions like envy and hatred.
Thank you for playing. Good bye.
It's an obvious troll. The experts part should have been the tip off.
Yes, 'tis true. . .
"The problem with you libertarians are that you are not serious. The first sign of this is that you don't respect our leaders and experts. This is a serious problem. We cannot move forward without our leaders and experts to solve our problems and guide us forward."
A+, good troll
It takes this long for us to figure it out? If I were him, I'd be laughing my ass off.
There are still people arguing with him. What is the matter with you guys?
That was good trolling. It did have people going for some time...
You come here to educate us by displaying a complete and utter lack of understanding of the subject you are talking about?
You assert the rich will not change their behavior or leave but you clearly do not understand what it even means to be rich.
First off in America we only tax income.
If I am wealthy and have say $50 million in the bank I can easily live off of that $50 million and never run out of money, I don't need an income. Now if you are going to confiscate 90% of whatever income I earn why would I bother ever wasting the time or taking the risk to earn it? I'm not going to go start another company nor am I going to invest in one, if I own a company I'm either going to sell it or shut it down then take my $50 million and go sit on a beach somewhere.
And we're still arguing with the blatant parody.
Sorry, but spouting bullshit that you make up is not education.
As I note below, US social spending is greater than the OECD average, whereas you emote that its the lowest of advanced economies.
You do know that the OECD is the club of advanced economies, don't you? You do know that $8700 is greater than $6500, don't you? Then why did say that US social spending is the lowest of advanced economies? Because you just made that up.
7/10 Poe's law
Hello Mary Stack.
"You libertarians are being left behind."
Possibly, although we have more than just the one deranged, narcissistic stalker.
Tulpa?
We spend less than any other first world country on social benefits.
What amazes me about this claim:
1. The same people who believe it will then go on to say that we spend more on healthcare than every other first world country.
2. Oddly enough, we also have far fewer crippling mass strikes and violent protests over the amount of "social benefits" being paid by the government, than most other "first world" countries.
1 is true. 2, I really don't know where you are getting your information from. Hopefully not from one of these internet chat rooms.
1 is true.
Cognitive dissonance, how does it work?
2, I really don't know where you are getting your information from
Yeah, it's a mystery...
Unless he lives in Korea, PracticalMan is just making shit up.
According to OECD.Stat, the US spends an annual average of $8398 per capita versus the OECD average of $6581 in constant purchasing power parities and constant 2005$.
US comes in 11th place, between the Netherlands and Ireland.
See for yourself at OECD statistics
Oh great, now Hit and Run has autoplaying flash audio ads.
Use ABP then just give a donation to the foundation. They probably get more money that way, anyhow.
Best idea. I had Reason whitelisted for a while, but realized that was the best way to handle it.
Last time I did that, they sold my e-mail address to every conservative group with a buck and I had to switch e-mail addresses because I was getting dozens of e-mails a day full of all kinds of bigoted garbage directed towards non-Christians, homosexuals, and minorities.
They'll never get my e-mail again.
... ok
The other day I hit HyR without ABP by accident and near the top there was something highlighted "Top Articles" or some such and it was just a bunch of off-site, click-bait listicles.
I donate but even if I didn't the amount and nature of the advertising is just too unbearable to put up with.
Taboola keeps pushing the boundaries on "acceptable, unobtrusive" ads with the rule list maintainers, and the user base keeps revolting every time they do. I guess they removed Taboola again, but I had to add custom rules to ABP to get rid of it originally.
HOLY SHITE if you come to the site without blocking it's unusable. I keep forgetting that until I wander here on an unfiltered browser. I don't like using ad blocking and would prefer to support an online entity through their sponsors but HOLY SHITE.
I've seen worse - someone linked a newspaper site the other day that brought my browser to a complete standstill when again I had ABP disabled for some reason - but yeah Reason is worse than average. I think. I've been on ABP since the beginning.
When facts are embarrassing to progressives, the New York Times ignores or dismisses the issue as long as possible...but sometimes reality hits them in the face so hard that they shrug and decide they may as well admit the obvious - not with a view toward solving the problem but with a view toward making the problematic policy a little bit less retarded.
So Nicholas Kristof has a new op-ed, A Confession of Liberal Intolerance, where he admits to anti-Republican and anti-evangelical bias in the universities.
"Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says there'll probably be tax increases on the wealthy if he's elected. "The wealthy are willing to pay more," he insisted."
How much of a pass should Republican voters give Trump--just 'cause we think he might be better than Hillary on the Second Amendment?
Is saying he's better than Hillary on the Second Amendment (despite past heartfelt opinions to the contrary) make him invulnerable on every other issue but the Second Amendment?
To pay for swing voting Democrats, now that he's won the Republican nomination, he's doing a fucking Liz Warren impersonation! Are pro-capitalist Republicans supposed to ignore that--just because of the bullshit he's said about the Second Amendment?
"To p[l]ay for swing voting Democrats . . . "
Fixed!
You know what I'm saying?
He's gone full retard on a number of issues since he's won the nomination--he even has Carson (who's running point on his Vice Presidential search) saying that they're considering Democrats for Vice President.
. . . and we're supposed to ignore him throwing everything there was to like about the Republican party out the window---just because he says something we like about the Second Amendment?
The Second Amendment is extremely important to me.
So is capitalism.
Redistributing wealth by way of government with higher income taxes is not capitalism.
Well, IIRC, a number of us on here pointed out months ago that he's a lifelong Democrat from New York who is just playing a strongman shtick and parroting what he thinks Republican talking points are...
...Strange that the people aren't getting all of their political advice from commenters on a libertarian website
Most Americans want stronger gun control. Therefore, Mr Trump will have to come around on that also if he is to stand a chance against Madam Secretary Clinton, who may be the best presidential candidate of our lifetime.
You're laying it on too thick. Scale it back and the satire will be better
Yeah, I gotta deduct some points for that. Although amsoc in all seriousness praises Obama as the greatest President of "our lifetime". I guess he was born yesterday.
Truly, Barack Obama was in over his head. The only reason he became president is that the Republican candidates were so weak. Surely, even you libertarians can agree with that? Barack Obama has, while not as bad as the Republicans would have been, not done a good job as leader. He let Republicans derail single player healthcare for one thing. He still deserves the utmost respect as our president.
I'm gonna cite Poe's Law here.
Who has more experience than Hillary Clinton? Former First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State? Who can top that? It's not satire, it's common sense. Trump has no experience. Bernie Sanders has experience but lacks the discipline.
She also has experience as a wife and a mother.
This is true. Good point!
OMG, it's too stupid to realize it's being mocked!
Whom is mocking whom? hmmm?
Former First Lady
it's true. Trump has no experience being someone's wife, or getting elected for being someone's wife, or getting an appointment for being someone's wife and being woefully incompetent at it.
To be fair, Trump has only run small, privately owned businesses into the ground. Hillary has years of experience throwing entire countries into utter chaos.
Well, since Trump won the nomination over the objections of both the establishment and Tea Party candidates, he's unlikely to stay to true to the Second Amendment out of fear of alienating either one of them.
If he's elected, he'll always be a mass shooting at an elementary school away from selling "assault weapons" down the river.
Meanwhile, he's openly campaigning against capitalism and free trade.
Most Americans want stronger gun control. These mass killings do not happen anywhere else, since all other modern first world countries already have sensible gun control.
Anders Brevik
Mumbai has very strong gun control laws.
Paris?
Most Americans want stronger gun control. Therefore, Mr Trump will have to come around on that also if he is to stand a chance against Madam Secretary Clinton, who may be the best presidential candidate of our lifetime.
You did a decent job above, but this is just trying too hard. Come on, buddy, we all know you're a better troll than this.
Damn that must have been some cocktail party last night, 11:15 and no new stories posted since AM Links, every but Ed must be sleeping off the hangover
Last!
Last!
I observe what I did there...
AND I AM LASTERER!!!!!
Hopefully Almanian isn't last in his presidential campaign.
I am still voting Almanian/Cthulhu
One thing I like about you libertarians is your ability to argue your positions. Even though you're wrong about most things, most of you are articulate. Once you've come around and join us progressives, you will be a great asset in moving the country forward.
I think by "articulate" you mean "reasoned and logical." Thing is, to come around and join the progressives, we'd have to cease being reasoned and logical.
*makes a sad face*
Hilarious!
most of you are articulate.
Thanks, PM! ((BTW, has this become the PM Lynx?)
This may very well be the most fucking articulate commentariat on the Intertoobs.
Fuckin' aye, brah.
Real progressives don't care about how well people argue their positions.
Real progressives are willing to shove a few million bodies into a grave in order to "move the country forward".
Exactly. They care about how sick people argue their positions.
Is that another euphemism?
Fuckin' aye, brah.
Mary, Mary, why you buggin'?
Wait I thought it was agreed among progtards that calling someone articulate was racist?
Way too hard on the Troll, lighten up a bit and you might have succeeded. You almost had us
Is it a holiday or something?
The Day After Mother's Day, DUH!
Might be relevant if there were libertarian women.
They might not be libertarians, but every libertarian has a mother. Or were we really born from the ooze that is capitalism's toxic waste?
Why are AM Links still the most recent post? Surely someone unexpected has endorsed Trump and/or Hillary. Or a new form of outrage has been discovered over some cultural event we've heretofore been taking for granted as an accepted thing. Coming off the third hottest month in the history of the universe?
How about how twerking has just now officially supplanted planking on the internet and why that's a good thing for the libertarian moment.
I'll let some more articulate than I in this matter make the the case.
It's not possible to more articulate than what you just wrote 🙂
*be
god dammit
How about how twerking has just now officially supplanted planking on the internet and why that's a good thing for the libertarian moment.
Fixed it for you. With any luck HM will be along shortly to provide video evidence.
*nods vigorously*
Yeah. It's today like the day some state has to like comply with some law that like defines the most important challenge of our lifetimes or something, like bathrooms or something, you know?
This is one of the areas where progressives get a bad name, I think it is undeserved. Especially, the outrageous PC antics that are happening on college campuses. This somehow gets associated with progressives, which is a shame, because this is nothing to do with progressives. I don't know who these people are, but I don't consider them progressive. I support free speech.
I think libertarians are mostly good on social issues. I think libertarians go too far when they talk about legalizing all drugs. The potential harm that it could do to our society is something we have to take into account. I am pro legalization of marijuana, taxed and regulated, and want to see the sentencing reform and police reform. I think we might agree on military policy. I am against all of the military intervention.
If you're walking through a forest with a canoe in your purse, and the wheels fall off, how many red flags does it take to cover a dog house?
The potential harm that it could do to our society is something we have to take into account.
Nothing about rights, of course. Nothing about the actual harm that the WoD has already, demonstrably done to our society. Nothing about individual choice and personal responsibility. And, predictably, the precautionary principle writ large and used as an excuse to just handwave the rights of others away.
Fuck. Off.
CNN reports "Opinion: We need a bathroom revolution"
Really, we don't. I say this as someone who wouldn't care in the slightest if all bathrooms were coed. But this is really not that big of an issue.
AS A MAN I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO RELIEVE MYSELF OUTSIDE UNFETTERED BY PURITANICAL LAWS ABOUT PUBLIC URINATION.
It is our Adamic right.
So say we all.
Not just men. Women want to hike their skirts and squat, fine with me.
No. They don't have the ability to aim and also it's unseemly. SOMEONE MIGHT BE GETTING AROUSED BY SEEING IT.
There are a number of funnel-type thingies on the market that allow them to use a urinal. First saw these in the nineties, marketed to the adventure sports crowd.

"Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says there'll probably be tax increases on the wealthy if he's elected. "The wealthy are willing to pay more," he insisted."
It just drives home the point that Trump is a big-government "progressive". Still, don't be surprised when the left points to his policies as the disastrous results of small government and free-market capitalism.
Pluto does mean money. It therefore follows, as night follows day, that the name of the planet (wanderer) draws the boiling wrath of the sensitive, concerned and altruistic souls who hate filthy lucre--unless taken from others at gunpoint. It would be instructive to see a list of names of the grant-sucking ex-scientists who hatched the brilliant plan to ban Pluto.
