Frats Chastised for Culturally Appropriating Sexual-Assault Awareness

The Interfraternity Council Monday apologized for how the anti-assault banners "may have been emotionally triggering for survivors."

It's a complaint made again and again by those committed to decreasing sexual violence on campus: frat boys are terrible allies. No matter how woke the rest of the campus gets to affirmative consent and avoiding sexual harassment, fraternities continue to make light of or even promote rape with distasteful banners, bawdy skits, and alcohol-laden parties, say detractors. So it might be viewed as a step in the right direction to see the Northwestern University chapter of Theta Chi broadcast a different kind of public message loud and clear from its house walls: "Theta Chi stand against sexual assault."

And that wasn't the only message emblazoned on Northwestern University frat-houses in April, which the school had designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Another banner proclaimed: "We support survivors." A third: "This is everyone's problem."

Yes! Men taking responsibility for their role in stopping rape. Men practicing good "bystander intervention," the new Obama-administration led buzzword for how everyone has a role to play in discouraging bad sexual behavior. Frat boys sending a strong, clear signal that they won't turn a blind eye to sexual violence any longer.  Anti-rape advocates on campus must be thrilled, right?

Nope! "These banners publicly project an image of solidarity, and some chapters made signs and marched with Take Back the Night," notes student and Daily Northwestern columnist Jessica Schwalb. But "a congratulations is hardly in order," she continues. "Conversations about sexual assault within fraternities must continue beyond a single month of awareness or solitary presentation from Sexual Health and Assault Peer Educators or Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault."

But how can fraternities continue a conversation they're apparently not even allowed to enter in the first place?

"To display a banner (saying) that 'We support survivors' is really something you have to earn by actually walking the walk," said senior Erik Bakerr. "The idea of displaying a banner like that in front of a house where people have been assaulted before seems really in poor taste to me."

So… students want fraternities to change their culture, but any indications that they are changing their culture are off limits. Got it.

The Interfraternity Council Monday said that it would discourage members from hanging any more awareness banners, and apologized for how the campaign "may have been emotionally triggering for survivors." The Council also announced plans to create a four-year sexual assault education program for fraternity brothers, expanding on an existing program that gives each pledge class a one-time visit from the group Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault.

  1. men are the problem. how can men be part of the solution?

    1. Don’t ask that question. You might not like the answer.

      1. You know who else figured out a way for their enemies to finally be part of the solution?

(Is what I would say if I didn’t know this is exactly what Lee means when he cautions against asking that question.)

        1. Edward Longshanks?

        2. Obama. But you have to redefine “enemies” to mean “friends.”

          #ThereIsButOnePartyInAmerica

      2. “You might not like the answer.”

Men a part of the “final” solution?

        1. You know who…hey, wait a moment?!

          1. What, Jerry Skids was too subtle for you?

  2. “We have learned the error of our ways and we don’t have mindless drunken hookup parties any more. Instead, as socially responsible adults preparing for the real world, we hold cultural awareness events.

“Tonight’s cultural awareness weekend features Russia. We will be…drinking in…all the Russian culture.”

    (“Are the chicks buying it?”)

    “Shut up, I’m still recording.”

  3. No matter how woke the rest of the campus gets to affirmative consent and avoiding sexual harassment

I need a Nikki intervention here.

    1. It’s a millennial thing. don’t tell the paleos.

    2. I know. Whatever happened to “be wokened”?

    3. ENB woke af (also bae)

  4. Social justice hipsters were woke before you. You are fake bandwagon aware. Shut up and be the villains! But this is how people play when the entire system is “more minority than thou”.

    1. They should start with being supporters of walk of shame victims and earn a level-up.

      1. They should start with being supporters of walk of shame victims

You are behind the times, old man. It is called the “stride of pride.” Strutting your stuff with smeared makeup, carrying your heels, wondering what happened to your lost panties and dealing with a hangover that would crush a giant is something to be proud of.

        Hell yeah.

      2. Nope, dudes going to a walk of shame are just there to ogle half naked women. They have to start by not being men, I guess.

I’m 15 years out of college and maybe it’s because I went to a women’s only radical feminist nirvana, but we didn’t care if men claimed to be feminist just to get laid, or even “equalist” because they didn’t like the word feminist. Other people who heard them wouldn’t know that. Not treating women as a special otherness was a start. Then again, we also hosted an amazing symposium on sex work and had a lot of dissenting voices with different viewpoints invited to speak and I can’t imagine that happening these days. Especially not calling it a symposium. Underage drinking and thinking not allowed!

        1. women’s only radical feminist nirvana

          Mount Holyoke or Smith?

          1. Randolph-Macon Women’s College. Right across the way from Liberty, students from which came over one night and rearranged gay pride flags to spell out “FAG” in the quad. We laughed and put it back. No one was triggered. We ignored them.

I once nearly (by accident) smacked into Jerry Falwell in full grecian costume with a mask on, though, so I can’t say we never terrorized them back.

            1. Yay another Virginian!

            2. Then I guess you never had the problem of guys claiming feminism with H-SC guys.

              1. hahaha….several guys from my high school went to H-SC, the ones who didn’t have the grades for UVA or W&L. Much as I disliked H-SC and the sort who attended, it would sadden me if even H-SC fell prey to the campus SJW menace.

            3. I used to work with a coupla gals from that college. They said the Liberty boys called them “The Whores on the Hill”.

            4. I once nearly (by accident) smacked into Jerry Falwell in full grecian costume with a mask on

Now you’re just plagiarizing The Magus
              smdh

            5. Don’t they have an amazing equestrian program?

            6. Don’t they have an amazing equestrian program?

          2. What’s Sarah Lawrence, chopped…pages of The Feminine Mystique?

            1. I dated a girl from Sarah Lawrence for a while. Nutty and slutty.

              1. Me too, with an emphasis on “nutty.” We are still friends, and she is still nutty.

  5. They don’t want a conversation, they want complete and utter submission.

    1. It’s not satisfactioning me, either.

      1. I want to know how Elvis went forward in time, recorded the Howard Dean “Yeeeaw!”, brought it back to 1968, and sampled it on that track.

    2. No, they want resistance, which is why every appeasement brings new scandals. If the perceived problems actually evaporated once legislation was passed, these alarmists would no longer have any reason to exist.

      1. Hmmmmm … makes me ponder …..

Could it be that because these spoiled brats had no resistance as kids, where every entrant won a trophy and gold star, where even the slightest tantrum got the goods, that they actually hunger for resistance and pushback, and why they find increasingly crazy problems?

It would be interesting to find stats on how many of these offencerati are single children, and how many got everything they wanted from parents who dared not refuse their snowflake.

        1. I think that idea could go both ways (heh). They never received pusback, so when someone does they can’t tolerate it, or they never received pushback so they are yearning for it. I tend to think it’s the former, though I could see an argument for the latter. I know that if I don’t receive constructive criticism for projects or whatever, I will actively seek it out because I know it helps. It could be that these kids don’t know how to do that in a constructive way.

          1. I’d bet there’s both going on, but agree that it’s mostly the former. It seems pretty clear that the kids in the Robby Soave beat can’t handle criticism in any way and immediately resort to demanding an authority figure force an apology then remove the source of the criticism.

            1. Can’t it be both? They want to be Top Dog, of course, and get to tell everyone else what to do, but it is extremely useful to have enemies. If you don’t have enough enemies handy, you just find some or make some.

            2. the kids in the Robby Soave beat can’t handle criticism in any way and immediately resort to demanding an authority figure force an apology then remove the source of the criticism.

And they’re different from Baby Boomers how?

        2. I’d say the public school culture has more of a role than the parenting. The students want college to be just like 6th grade but with dorms.

Again, I ask how many of these SJW’s are paying their own way through college, rather than using parent’s money or loans? You know damn well these people who have so much time to spend in social clubs and organizations aren’t doing this after their part time job is done for the day.

          1. My dad paid for my undergrad, but funnily enough I thought I was there to learn, not party and socialize.

What I’m saying is that I wish I had partied more in undergrad when you didn’t have to worry about this ridiculous shit.

          2. if you exclude student loans from “paying your own way”, exactly nobody’s doing that. My dad paid for college being an usher in a movie theater in his spare time, but that kind of situation just isn’t possible at thirty thousand dollars a year.

        3. The more I think about this, the more I come to the conclusion that childhood only ends after pushback and resistance teaches adult methods of reasoning. Kids tossed into reality early, as in Dickens’ tales, become adults sooner; kids who don’t get pushback from parents and teachers don’t become adults until they leave home and school.

Thus I answer my question: these idiots don’t want either pushback or acceptance; they are merely continuing to throw childish tantrums because they are still children.

        4. I don’t think you need to psychoanalyze these kids any more than you do any other bully. They get off making people do what they want. They get off pushing people around. They only escalate when they get capitulation because it’s the pushing people around that makes them happy, not what they’re pushing them around over.

The fact that they differ from traditional bullies in that they’re total fucking pussies doesn’t change the nature of the behavior.

      2. if I were a more cynical man, I might think their real goal is whatever feeling they get from holding signs and righteously yelling at people.

  6. Bullying has an upside.

It teaches people how to cope with bullies.

If only I could give every millennial a wedgie, I’m sure they’d snap out of it.

We should have a National Wedgie Day. On that blessed day, everybody finds a millennial and gives him a culturally insensitive, gender biased, triggering, all-American, atomic wedgie. We run those drawers up the flagpole and everyone salutes!

That’s how you make America great again.

    1. Worth a try, I say.

*asks HR for printout of millenials on workforce*

  7. I still wonder why some people have such a strong distaste for social justice pushers.

  8. How long can you be called a racist sexist violent oppressor despite all your protestations and evidence to the contrary before you just give up and say screw it, if I’m going to be denounced as a racist sexist violent oppressor no matter what I do I might as well be a racist sexist violent oppressor and start punching people in the head? And how long can you call somebody a racist sexist violent oppressor despite all their protestations and evidence to the contrary before they start thinking that maybe you’d like nothing more than to get punched in the head? Because I’m getting pretty damn suspicious that a good round of head-punching is exactly what would make everybody happy here. How can I prove my victim status if nobody’ll punch me in the head? Please, somebody punch me in the head! I want to be a victim, too! And yet those racist sexist violent oppressors refuse to punch me in the head. See how oppressed I am?

    1. Ghostwritten by Judge Nappy.

    2. The greatest weapon evil has is false equivalence. It is not so much that people who otherwise would not be rapists and such become one. It is that by calling every man a rapist, it is no longer possible to condemn actual rapists in a meaningful way. If the guy who has sex with a drunk and willing girl at a party is put on the same level as the guy who breaks into a woman’s apartment and rapes her at gun point, there is no longer any way to meaningfully justify why the second guy is bad.

These people are not just stupid. And they are not even just active forces for evil. They are active forces for the very evil they claim to fight.

      1. “The greatest weapon evil has is false equivalence.”

        There’s also the ballot box.

    3. Since words are actual violence and not speaking is speech, I will do maximum damage by ignoring them.

    4. How long can you be called a racist sexist violent oppressor despite all your protestations and evidence to the contrary before you just give up and say screw it, if I’m going to be denounced as a racist sexist violent oppressor no matter what I do I might as well be a racist sexist violent oppressor

What do you think the “Alt-Right” is?

  9. Does this mean I can finally stop my fifteen-year crusade of taking back the night?

    1. Taking it back from what?

      1. Heterosexual men.

Believe it or not, some of them will openly admit to be physically attracted to females.

        It’s disgusting!

        1. Heterosexual men have possession of the night? How can I go about selling my share?

          1. Some heterosexual men will actually take women out, try to make themselves seem attractive and witty, but the whole time? They’re interested in a physical relationship. I’ve seen it happen.

Even within married couples, there are heterosexual men who are physically attracted to females. And a lot of those guys, at some point, will pressure their wives to have sex–because they’re physically attracted to females.

I’m telling you, we’ll never have a truly free society until heterosexual men stop it with their disgusting physical attraction to women. And once we get that fixed, we can start on trying to stop the geese from flying south for the winter.

            1. They’re interested in a physical relationship.

Well, why the else would they want to talk to women?

          2. They don’t rule the night. Nobody does.

            Cake anyone?

    2. Yes, Batman, you can put away the cape.

      1. GEORGE: You know what this has to do with? The man in the cape–I bet you he is
mixed up in this!I don’t trust men in capes.

JERRY: You can’t cast aspersions on someone just because they’re wearin’ acape. .. Superman wore a cape.. An’ I’ll be damned if I’m gonna stand here an’ let you say something bad about him.

GEORGE: All right Superman’s the exception.

  10. Conversations about sexual assault within fraternities must continue beyond a single month of awareness…

She wants them to continue but not to start? Chicks, don’t get ’em sometimes.

    1. Look, if you don’t get it I can’t be bothered to explain it to you.

    2. Since the Hawks are done… fine, we’ll talk. But can we speed this up? I don’t want to miss any of the really good parts of baseball season.

      1. There are no good parts of the baseball season, other than the day it’s finally over.

        1. That’s great Ted, do you mind if we talk about this once the game over?

    3. Nothing. Never mind. You wouldn’t understand!

  11. This would be where most would (and should) give up the effort.

  12. It is pointless to try and engage with the insane. The FemActivists are to a single one emotionally disturbed individuals.

The complainant is Erica Snow, not Erik Bakerr. I bet if you gained her confidence she would admit to being bipolar, depressed, etc etc etc.

  13. I use the Teddy Roosevelt doctrine regarding my sexual relations.

    Walk softly….

  14. Jesus, fuck these people…

    1. Um, that’s rapey talk

  15. “Trigger a Social Justice Warrior” is such an easy achievement to get. It should only be worth 5 points.

    1. It should be negative points. The real trick is finding a way not to offend.

      1. “The only way to win, is to not play the game.”

        1. JOSHUA was ahead of his time.

        2. They’ll just demand you play the game so they can lose and be the victims.

  16. ” “The idea of displaying a banner like that in front of a house where people have been assaulted before seems really in poor taste to me.” ”

What evidence does this guy have that people have ever been sexually assaulted in that house other than just assuming frat boys must be rapists?

Someone may have been sexually assaulted in any house, so no sexual assault awareness is ever okay.

    1. Someone may have been sexually assaulted in any house, so no sexual assault awareness is ever okay.

Plus, even if an assault did occur, where the hell else *should* the sign go? The library?

All those tombstones and ‘Beware of Dog’ signs are, apparently, inappropriately placed.

  17. Can we stop pretending that these feminists give a shit about preventing rape or sexual assault as much as they care about punishing the people they don’t like

    1. They certainly don’t care about women. When it comes to the psychological effects of something, perception is reality. Convince yourself you have been victimized has the same effect on you that actually being victimized does. Feminists are taking young women who would at most suffer a bit of regret over some sexual dalliance and convincing them that they are the victim of rape. Think about how cruel and inhuman that is.

      1. The blaming the victim crap (go get black out drunk and put yourself in vulnerable situations with strangers because empowerment and then you’ll get famous when you write about the bad things that may happen to you) and equating sexual regret with rape leads me to think they actually WANT women to feel like rape victims. Sick fucks.

        1. Think about how many stories we see where someone says “I didn’t *realize* I had been raped until I talked to a gender studies professor/guidance counselor and they told me I was!”

A lot of people basically get manipulated into thinking they’ve been sexually assaulted by people whose ideology is predicated on tons of people being raped.

          1. +1 Martha Coakley.

    2. It’s way easier to talk shit about frat boys than to hand out domestic abuse literature in a trailer park or volunteer at a battered women’s shelter.

The goal is to provide the SJW with the highest ego trip to effort ratio. If you’re a crazy narcissist, you can get just as much of an ego trip from bullying frat brothers as you can from doing something actually valuable, so why expend the additional effort?

      1. or volunteer at a battered women’s shelter.

100% this. There is no more “shit or get off the pot.” They just stay on that pot and shit. And shit. And then shit some more.

      2. Yeah, half the left’s agenda is about sticking it to hated groups.

The rich, Christians, rednecks, frat boys, . . .

If you could somehow convince the left that protecting gun rights was sticking it to rednecks, half of them would change their position tomorrow.

        1. I would say its more like 80%, maybe 90%, of the left’s agenda.

    3. When will the fraternities learn that appeasement only brings further demands and condemnation? The proper response at this point is “Fine, go fuck yourselves” and then ignore them completely.

      1. I think ignoring them lets them monopolize the conversation, and they’ll get spineless college administrators to make rules that spread the injustice.

Fight them in the streets. Block by block, house to house, room to room, these monsters must be fought.

        1. Yeah, even better. Hang signs saying “If you want to call us rapists, Bring some actual Proof”, “Yes can’t change to No 6 months later” etc. I’m sure others can come up with better.

          1. Oooo, I like those.

  18. Forcing processed compassion into the societal rubric fossilizes natural empathy.

Essential human nature left to its genuine will resolve violence against the vulnerable. Moral and political concoctions in spite of their touted ingredients deprive our biology of its organic desire to optimize interaction and existence.

Introduce overtly centralized architecture and society collapses its positive evolution.

    1. ^THIS^

You ever see that video of the Chinese girl who was run over in a busy street, not once, but twice, and no one lifted a finger to help her?

      1. Well that’s what she gets for being a girl in China.

    2. Genuine compassion is by its nature private and personal. Forced compassion is public and fake. Forced compassion is what I call engaging in virtue supremacy. The object is not the person whom you are expressing compassion towards. The object is the rest of society. The person is just a tool for you to express and assert your supremacy over both them and everyone else.

      1. Well put. I’ll use this the next time one of the pastors shows up at the Men’s Club and starts asking us to sign petitions to Congress to fund whatever the meme of the month is – minimum wage, starving kids in America, tribal violence in Africa, human trafficking, free child care for 2 year olds, etc. Probably get me labelled (if not already) as that hard-hearted trog that wants to employ child labor to make his monocles.

        1. Probably get me labelled (if not already) as that hard-hearted trog that wants to employ child labor to make his monocles.

Focus on the idiocy. If he’d shown up representing The Human Fund or w/e directly, you would’ve gladly donated (or w/e), but petitions to Congress you can find or start on your own (esp. since teh internets), not to mention that it starts from a morally bankrupt position (stealing tax money) and, practically speaking, is consistently one of the worst ways to actually help anyone.

        2. If your concern is starving kids in Africa, why don’t you get on a plane and go feed a few of them? Ask him that. And while you are at it, ask him what sacrifice he is making by getting people to sign a peace of paper?

        3. Wait, you have pastors show up at strip clubs to push SJW silliness?

    3. Dayum, AC.

      Droppin’ the wisdom.

  19. My roommate is one of my little brothers from the frat we were in. It feels like we have the same conversation every time one of these stories comes out. At our chapter, we didn’t have to have presentations on rape and sexual assault because it was just assumed that a good, decent human being doesn’t do that shit. We had absolute ragers every weekend… usually Thursday night through Saturday night. We didn’t have one single rape or sexual assault incident. The worst that ever happened was we would get the occasional “John Doe is being a creeper…” and someone would intervene. After getting chewed out numerous times and his ass beat once, he learned his lesson. And every single time, he wasn’t consciously being a creep. Ole boy just couldn’t hold his liquor. He started cutting back and BAM. Problem solved. If there was to ever be an actual rape or assault, we wouldn’t need the cops cause we’d kill the motherfucker. And all the girls we partied with knew that they could approach any one of us at any time with a grievance. Hell, we frequently heard about how safe they felt with us.

I’m glad I graduated when I did (2010) because fuck me sideways, I would’ve been kicked out today for laughing at some Social Justice Sally telling me to not be a rapist. Fuck their feelings. Fuck their trigger warnings. And fuck their ham fisted social engineering.

    1. What you’re saying can’t be true, because all fraternities are rape factories, we know this because it must be, so actual proof of these allegations is not required!

Sadly, this is what passes for logic and informed “debate” on college campuses these days.

    2. You graduated a year after I did and my fraternity experience was the same way. We were extremely quick to ensure that this sort of thing was not tolerated. Sure, some things got out of hand, but it was never condoned and quickly stopped. It was always discussed the following week on what we could do better. We made every effort to ensure people were safe, to the point of asking campus security to provide help at our parties (which they willingly obliged, though our campus security was just a couple older retired guys who were completely harmless).

    3. Sounds like my frat, back in the early ’80s.

  20. The key to getting street cred is to call yourself a ‘victim’. Just like, in the 12 Step debate, just call yourself an ‘addict and alcoholic’ then you can say whatever you want. Just make up a story about some girl in middle school and the nasty things she made you do. No one will question it.

    1. Just make up a story about some girl in middle school and the nasty things she made you do. No one will question it.

I beg to differ. I question it. But first, tell us this story. What were the nasty things the girl in middle school made you do?

      1. I could tell you but then both of us will have to drop out of school and get counseling for PTSD. It was bad, man.

    2. The nympho made me do it!

  21. giving women exactly what they say they want and they still aren’t happy?

did I wake up on Earth?

  22. “Campus Rape Culture” is made up bullshit. Fraternities should be lambasted for kowtowing to these ridiculous creatures. Bullies only understand force, so stand up to them and call them out for the vicious liars they are.

    1. Exactly. It’s hard to sympathize with the useful idiots, i.e. those who don’t dismiss every SoJo concept/term after a moment’s consideration of its sense and internal coherence; and don’t then emit a categorical “fuck off.” And especially those who continue, sans mockery, to bandie and perpetuate these platitudes

      1. You left out “Yeah, Robbie, I’m looking at you”.

    2. Wendy McElroy has a great new book out attacking the ‘rape culture guys. It’s very good. E-book only.

      Rape Culture Hysteria

  23. lol, I love the snarky mockery of incorporating “culturally appropriating” into the title. More of that!

  24. OT: Spent 34 hours in the hatchery waiting room until midnight last night.

My first grandchild (biological) is a girl; 7 lbs 5 oz.

    I am already in love.

    1. 🙂

    2. Hey don’t misgender eir!

      Just kidding – congrats!

    3. Congratulations to you.

    4. Quick! Someone rescue that girl before Suthenboy indoctrinates her into the ways of the free!

      Otherwise, congrats.

    5. Congratulations, Suthen.

    6. She will no doubt have you wrapped around her finger:) That is the best man, congrats!

    7. Congrats! You old fart.

    8. Congratulations!

    9. Spent 34 hours in the hatchery waiting room until midnight last night.

Holy Hell 34 hours! You showed up early, right?

      Congrats.

    10. Congrats Suthengrampa!

    11. Congratulations, Suthen!

    12. Congratulations!

    13. Congrats, S.

34 hours sounds like a very difficult delivery, to me. Hope everyone’s OK.

    14. Congratulations!

    15. Congratulations!

    16. Yes! Awesome Suthen!

  25. Some people just can’t win. When I was an undergrad, my fraternity hosted a seminar on the question of reparations, featuring, among others, the esteemed Melissa Harris-Perry (who seemed much less angry back then). Needless to say, we got kicked in the crotch for it by the SJWs (i.e., how dare you privileged white cis-shitlords talk about a subject like this?).

    1. how dare you privileged white cis-shitlords talk about a subject like this?

Because us privileged white cis-shitlords would be the ones expected to pay for this bullshit?

      1. Ding ding ding!!

        You win 5 free internetz.

  26. I got $5 for anyone who tosses some blood and semen on that sheet hanging in front of the Frat. Another fin if you can spell TRUMP.

  27. They should modify their sign to This is everyone’s responsibility. Stop coming to our parties and acting like drunken whores.

    1. “If you’re gonna accuse us of rape, we’re gonna have to start charging to cover the legal fees.

      No fat chicks.”

      1. “No Fatties, No Uglies, No Lezzies”

        That should get a reaction.

        1. Thinking about this further, I agree that they’ve got the signage all wrong;

“Beware of Penises”, “Caution: Rape Dungeon Ahead”, “Hazard: Impregnating Debris, Prophylaxis Required”, “This area has been operating for 0 days without a vagina being penetrated”, etc.

I think fake Wanted Posters and Police Flyers/Blotters could work too; “Guilty of nine counts of serially inducing orgasm”, “Notorious for, on more than one occasion, pleasing a woman with his bare hands.”, “The suspect can be recognized by his chiseled physique, exceptionally long tongue, and distinct limp when aroused.”

I think, between the two, you’ve made all possible good faith efforts to portray any/all intent and/or dangers posed and are, therefor, exculpated from liability but, IANAL. Seems like “Look the sign says ‘Dick Swinging Zone’, she walked in, and got hit with a dick.” is a pretty open and shut case.

      2. I choked on my coffee. Thank you.

      3. I was thinking something along the same lines – heave a sigh, turn the banner around, and put “OK then, blow us and make us sandwiches”.

This is why things are evolving as they are – everyone just can’t agree that assault is assault, it is an issue to a degree, and most rational people should be against it, and if they are human they will intercede when they become clearly and presently aware of one. But that’s not good enough. You have to be a fundamentalist about it. Sure, some people call it social signalling, but that seems too broad. You have to become part of the cult and REALLY MEAN IT, or you’re on the outside. I guess what I am saying is that the ALL the social signallers will be outside the lines shortly. We seem to be a society of insular, obsessed people creating cloisters throughout society. And dialog and understanding is for pussies.

  28. This so much shows that the issue is not actually about rape but social signaling.

In essence they are saying “How dare those frat boys appropriate our virtuous social signals for their own aggrandizement”

If they actually cared about rape victims and reducing the incidence of rape they’d be celebrating this because anything that gets the message out helps, instead they are pissed off that someone they deem unworthy might be stealing their social capital by using those same signaling slogans.

    1. Well duh.

      Nothing new under the sun

  29. “However, nationally only around 40 percent of sexual assault cases result in an expulsion or suspension, according to a Washington Post analysis of 100 universities between 2012-2013.”

Innocent until proven guilty is rape culture.

    1. What percentage of sexual assault legal convictions result in and expulsion or suspension?

    2. Innocent until proven guilty *and* the punishment fitting the crime.

Slapping someone on the ass might be a sexual assault. IDK, that it intrinsically demands suspension/expulsion at every occurrence.

  30. “To display a banner (saying) that ‘We support survivors’ is really something you have to earn by actually walking the walk,” said Baker, the former Associated Student Government senator for four sexual health and assault-related groups.

Emphasis added. Eric has a great future.

  31. “fraternities continue to make light of or even promote rape with distasteful banners, bawdy skits, and alcohol-laden parties, say detractors.”

Great so the act of serving alcohol at parties (a practice that only fraternities do, of course) is supposed to count as promoting rape now? Are they going after the alcohol producers too? Perhaps we need some kind of trigger lock on the beer can.

    1. Chastity belt one down!

    2. promote rape with distasteful banners, bawdy skits

They’re being literally raped by free speech!

  32. Yeah MARS is for limp wristed pussies.

I know because when I joined a fraternity in January 2006 at Miami, we all were required to attend, as a pledge class, a MARS meeting run by a couple of guys in different fraternities who were affiliated with MARS.

Basically the entire thing was the two of them saying if a women claimed she was raped and went to the police station first that you were screwed and she would prevail and you would not, regardless of the facts.

Ironically enough the only sexual assault I was aware of pertaining to my fraternity was a brother a couple of years older, who did well with girls, being taken advantage of while wasted by some girl he didn’t find attractive but was friends with.

AND OF COURST NOTHING HAPPENED. It’s only assault if it’s man on woman.

    The hell with these people.

  33. OT: it’s rainy and cold and my favorite food truck is not in my neighborhood today. So I’m drinking in the cute.

  34. Splunge!

  35. “Woke”

    no.

its just a sneaky neologism for saying there’s “Righthink” and “Wrongthink” and the Woke Folk is all right-thinking.

Fuck that noise, and fuck anyone who pretends its a completely harmless synonym of ‘Aware’.

    1. I thought that was a typo. Damn the new annoying words I learn here

  36. “The Council also announced plans to create a four-year sexual assault education program for fraternity brothers, expanding on an existing program that gives each pledge class a one-time visit from the group Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault.”

So it’s a major and four year degree now?

I used to joke about this line of thinking [sic] leading to some inevitable and illogical conclusion, but I did not see it happening so fast.

  38. Stop appropriating my appropriation culture.

  39. What I hate most about campus leftists is that they make me sympathize with the kind of people I utterly despised in college. Seriously if you could take a time machine back 20 years and tell me how many online posts I’ve made in support of fratboys, I’d punch you in the face.

  40. The one in five ruse is a promise to continue pointing an accusng finger at people who haven’t done anything wrong. It serves the same function as writing ‘not asking for it’ on yer boobs. It trets the very existence of young men as an existential threat. It’s interesting that these young women prefer to use this type of pre-exisiting, (and supposedly pre-emptive) accusation function with such rigor. It is linked to the idea that women cannot major in mathematics without a pre-existing support group to combat mathematics inherent ‘sexism’, though one olbviously does mathematics individually and alone, for the most part. It reminds me how ‘conservative’ the campus ethos is now – like the way ypung black men have been traditionally seen as criminals ahead of time, by the more starchy political conservatives. It also reminds me of how neoWcon foreign policy contributes to ‘lsamaphobia’ (when it is real) by endlessly making war on people whom we then do need to fear might hurt us. College kids are all about tolerance of muslims, yet condemn innocent people ahead of time, of crimes they don’t wish to commit (rape, etc.)

  41. The Interfraternity Council Monday apologized for how the anti-assault banners “may have been emotionally triggering for survivors.”

What I think is the most interesting aspect to the Campus Follies, is not how offended people are, but just how whip-crack fast people are willing to apologize. The circle is complete.

    1. Yup. This is why we suck.

The correct response was: “Are you kidding me? Are you high? You people have driven right off the cliff of stupid and landed in the sea of insanity. “

  42. As a student and member of a fraternity at Northwestern I can practically guarantee that the SJWs who demanded an apology from the Interfraternity Council will never be satisfied. To accept assistance from fraternities in reducing the incidence of sexual assaults would require them to first extricate their heads from their asses, something that might be impossible for them.

  43. You just don’t get it. This is your fault. This is my fault. Every one of us, every day… when confronted with one of these PC douche bags and we just roll our eyes and keep walking. Or we apologize our fake little apology when someone takes offense at the inoffensive. Or when someone gets in trouble for telling an off color joke and we say “he should have known better”, or just stand by when the PC police call him to the carpet.

Every time you shut your mouth when you know damn well you should be saying “Oh, please! Shut the fuck up you self-important douche” you are creating this situation. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was this mess. All these precious little angels that can’t be confronted with someone of European decent eating a taco are your fault, because in 1994 when they said you couldn’t tell the lady at the front desk in your office that her new haircut looks nice because that’s sexual harassment you didn’t tell them to go stuff it.

We all bitched and moaned behind the scenes, but in order to avoid getting tossed out on our asses we capitulated and played along. And look where it has gotten us. Now saying “rape is bad” is triggering and must be apologized for. Holy crap, people. We have lost our damn minds.
