Celebrity Doctor Insists on Misleading Smokers About Vaping Hazards
Margaret Cuomo claims e-cigarettes are "at least as harmful" as the real thing.

Activists and public health officials frequently misrepresent the relative hazards of vaping and smoking, but usually not as blatantly as celebrity doctor Margaret Cuomo did in a recent Huffington Post video. In my latest Forbes column, I explain why the video, even after it was hastily edited to remove embarrassing errors, is still dangerously wrong:
Like most professional pundits, Margaret Cuomo has perfected the art of speaking authoritatively even when she does not know what she is talking about. Unlike most professional pundits, Cuomo is in a position to cause real damage. As a celebrity doctor spreading misinformation about the hazards of vaping, she is actively discouraging smokers from making a switch that could save their lives, thereby undermining her avowed goal of A World Without Cancer.
That's the title of a book that Cuomo, a radiologist who is the sister of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and CNN anchor Chris Cuomo (as well as the daughter of former Gov. Mario Cuomo), published in 2012. Given Cuomo's medical degree and her experience in diagnosing and writing about cancer, any layman unfamiliar with the subject would be inclined to believe her statement, in a Huffington Post video posted last week, that "e-cigarettes will raise your risk for lung cancer but also other cancers, like liver cancer." But as Boston University public health professor Michael Siegel (who is also a physician) was quick to point out, "there is absolutely no evidence to support this claim," which Cuomo retracted after The Daily Caller's Guy Bentley asked about it.
A new, hastily edited version of the video omits the cancer claim. Also gone: claims that tin has been detected in the aerosol produced by e-cigarettes and that vaping generates hazardous chemicals that are not found in tobacco smoke (which Siegel called "an outright lie"). But the corrected video still features a statement that sums up Cuomo's take on vaping. "Because of their chemical composition," Cuomo says as the video begins, "e-cigarettes are at least as harmful to your health as regular tobacco cigarettes are." A caption drives the point home: "They're not a safer cigarette."
How does Cuomo know that? She doesn't, because it's not true.

Third Friday without Funnies? Or was this post a joke?
depends if you find clowns funny or scary?
Funny if they are rodeo clowns being trampled by bulls.
Otherwise you can keep "Gacy the Clown" or whomever away from me!
+4 for bull poker
But they're a safer assault rifle, right?
In the future, I wonder if they'll be used as drug delivery devices.
Hard to predict the future. Always changing. That said, the last conference I went to claim implantable devices are the future. Instead of taking blood pressure pills, you'll have a device that regulates you blood pressure. Instead of insulin, you'll have a device to stimulate insulin production. I don't know how the public will react. Personally I'd rather have a surgery than take pills. I'm sure others will prefer pills to surgery.
Well maybe they'll finally fix your attitude mister
*crawls off of principal's desk*
Nobody GETS me!

"I'd like to introduce the Agile Cyborg 5000, cosmic psychedelia at the push of a button!"
I would like to invest - say, $10,000 in common stock, plz!
Shut up and take my money!
He'd be a juicer!
Ugh, another Cuomo.
Seems like there are families where no one can find honest work.
"Why the long face, Margaret?"
Not even as a doctor apparently...
I was diagnosed with cancer (unrelated to smoking) at the end of October. Both my radiologist and oncologist are pleased as punch that I switched to e-cigs two years ago. I'll take their word for it that vaping is much, much safer than smoking.
Ugh, same timeframe as I for cancer.
Good luck!
Cigarettes I quit 5 years ago - I'm inclined to start again just to blow smoke in the faces of people like Ms. Cuomo.
Always good to see you still here with us, Almanian.
+1
I'm writing you in. I hope we can get enough for it to make the news.
Be sure to complete the ticket - Almanian!/Cthulhu 2016!
carol / Almanian, best wishes for your treatment and recovery
I'm sorry to hear that, Almanian. I've finished my chemo, radiation and brachytherapy and just waiting for the results. I hope everything goes well for you.
My brother was diagnosed last year with smoking-related cancer. But he'd switched to e-cigs a couple of years before that which had enabled him to quit entirely. It was all too late to avoid the cancer, but it certainly has been a hell of lot easier not having to try to quit while undergoing treatment. And what a shock that yet another Cuomo turns out to be yet another unprincipled, grandstanding c*nt.
"e-cigarettes will raise your risk for lung cancer but also other cancers, like liver cancer."
They very well may. But probably not as much as, say, swimming in a public pool.
There was some big meta-study and evidently 90 percent of cancers are a combination of genetics and bad luck.
If she thinks e-cigs are bad, she should consider what damage is wrought by scientists lying their asses off in the name of science and thereby destroying the public's trust in science. Many people remember in "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" that the boy falsely cried "wolf !" several times, but they forget that in the end there really was a wolf.
"I love fucking science!" *** wink-wink-nudge-nudge ***
I don't understand why there is so much pressure from these lefties to ban vaping. I don't think there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow like there was with the tobacco suits that they could glom onto.
Maybe they just care about people.....
They told you to stop smoking and you started vaping. It's the same as when a parent tells you to stop touching your sibling and you put your finger an inch away and say "I'm not touching you". You enrage the parent and so the punishment is more severe. Government in a nutshell. They really do hate you for your freedom.
Yes, that makes sense. Trying to push lies to get their way and ensure the prolls do as they are told. Nanny Cuomo.
That's why I relish every one of your puny human laws that I break.
3 felonies a day? That's for mortals
Try 3 intergalactic convention violations a day
*frantically tries to summon planetary officials*
He has the death sentence on 12 systems. You be careful Swiss.
*looks up interplanetary conventions*
"Sentients will not breathe too loudly."
"Sentients will follow the rules of grammar as laid down in..."
These are weaksause rules, Mr. Lizard!
Fool! The lizardmen ATE the planetary officials!
Given the infinite number of intergalactic conventions in an infinite number of combinations, we're all violating at least three a day.
You know, I think it's that, and I also think there's a healthy bit of socio-economic bigotry involved. The Progressive smart set doesn't smoke, drink domestic mass-market beer (if they drink at all), or shop at Wal-Mart. That's what the lower classes do. Cigars might be OK, though. And you could probably excuse someone smoking American Spirits as long as he/she shops at Whole Foods, uses reusable bags, and is a 20-something hipster. Or is gay.
Nicotine addicts are able to indulge their filthy habit in a way that looks like smoking and avoid the punitive taxes. What is hard to understand?
I think you're on to something there, Mickey. How much vig is there on vaping (so far)?
You know what other Cuomo misled people?...
Perry?
Rivers?
Cuomo Ver?
All of them?
Cuomo es ta?
Is 'Cuomo' Italian for 'shitweasel'?
The name certainly is tainted by the behaviors of its public bearers.
Her name is Cuomo. She lies.
Just another case of the old adage that the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.
NIDA is on a crusade to convince people that addiction is real, and addiction is deadly. Her propaganda is an important component of that campaign. Thanks for chip, chip, chipping away at the nonsense.
I switched to vaping from smoking two years ago and, if it's as dangerous as a cigarette, why did I go through all the negative physical symptoms of quitting smoking while vaping?
Not that vaping doesn't pose at least some amount of health risk, but at this point in time only one study found a potential harm that I'm aware of and to get their results they burned out the device on purpose.
As soon as these clowns can put up a serious study that shows these supposed harms I'll keep laughing at them. Propylene Glycol is in so many things (including food and asthma inhalers) that they're going to have a real difficult time linking it to major harms.
Would if she slimmed down.
"Read the whole thing."
I'd love to, but it's on Forbes. I can't access forbes.com because it insists that I disable my ad blocker -- even after I've disabled my ad blocker.
So the Cuomo clan are born with a Pinnocchio gene?
Vaping means you still poison yourself, it's like smoking pure nicotine. It's self evident.
I've quit smoking without any help except for the Simpleguided smoking plan.
