Is Trump a 'Master Wizard' Who Uses Mental Tricks to Influence Voters?
So says Dilbert creator Scott Adams, who predicts The Donald will win the presidency in a landslide.
For months the press has labeled Donald Trump a blustering bully whose rhetoric shifts just as quickly as his temper. But what if his seemingly random insults are not random at all, and his vast appeal to primary voters has come about because of meticulously crafted messaging? What if The Donald is using mental tricks from the fields of hypnosis and persuasion to influence the electorate?
That is the argument put forth by Scott Adams, who calls Trump a "Master Wizard." The prolific author and creator of the massively popular comic strip Dilbert doesn't see Trump's appeal as an accident, or even as unpredictable. He's been boldly stating since early in the primary season that Trump would go on to be the Republican nominee, and eventually win the presidency in one of the biggest landslides in history. Given that The Donald has amassed more than half the delegates needed to secure the GOP nomination and he doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon, perhaps this prediction isn't as wild as some observers once believed.
In the video below, Adams explains to Reason TV how Trump uses visual imagery, vagueness, "linguistic kill shots," and other techniques to work his magic on voters.

Americans are stupid enough to think politicians are capable of things.
Turns out sheep love red meat.
I still say Adam's thesis that Trump is a bullshit artist that can get anybody to buy anything is a piece of performance art by Adam's to demonstrate that Adam's himself is a bullshit artist that can get anybody to buy anything. Demonstrating that human beings are gullible idiots is hardly a feat worth boasting about - the first caveman that convinced his fellow cavemen that there were invisible spirits controlling Nature and that these invisible spirits could be controlled by rituals known only to him and that therefore he should be their leader figured this out easily enough. How the hell is Trump any different from that first caveman other than being a little less articulate and a little more transparent in his bullshittery?
Had a buddy in high school. Worst fucking ball player on the team. Period. Slow, couldn't hit, couldn't field.
Starting first baseman. How? Rich daddy? BJs? Nope. He told everyone how good he was....the idiots believed him.
"How the hell is Trump any different from that first caveman other than being a little less articulate..."
I've not listened to Trump a lot, but my god I'm struck by his syntax and vocabulary. I'd say that he speaks at a second grade level, but I don't want to be accused of insulting second graders.
http://www.politico.com/magazi.....der-121340
FACT CHECK: It's a 3rd Grade level, thank you very much.
This is probably a better explanation than most.
Most people perceive not understanding someone else's vocabulary as "being talked down to".
People used to college level vocabulary, accustomed to treating others as intellectual equals, might just not get when a poorly educated person doesn't understand their language or perceives it to be uppity.
I can totally believe that people might be voting for Trump because he's the first one to come along and talk to them using small words they can understand.
I think you're right, Hazel. Additionally, he has a made-for-TV reputation for being just and decisive. His populism is wide ranging. He might win the election merely on his broad appeal to working class voters--both democrat and republican. No other candidate has the advantage of a decade or so of image making to bolster their campaign.
"He might win the election merely on his broad appeal to working class voters--both democrat and republican. "
No he won't. He has the worst negatives of any candidate in a quarter century of polling negatives.
Yeah, I think the cards are still stacked against him, largely because many traditional Republican voters won't vote for him. I don't think there are enough working class whites to beat a coalition of minorities and coastal progressives if middle-upper class Republicans don't turn out.
Which is why John is constantly on here shilling for him. He knows that he's going to need libertarians to be the tools they typically are by turning out to vote for the Republican no matter what.
That and John is clinical.
To add to your wholly sound analysis, Millenials will turn out like Noah's Hipster Flood to bury Trump. It will be their great Generational Story that they can talk about to avoid thinking about how stupid it was to fall for Obama. My generation sucks but they won't throw down with endorsement of mob violence or scape-goating minorities or boorish misogyny.
Your generation will get bored and starve themselves to death posting continuously on bitchbook. Once Bernie is gone the passion goes with it. And getting screwed by superdelegates sure ain't helping.
Trump will excite to turn out and bury him.
Please, like they turned out in Virginia?
Anyone who knows for sure what will happen between Trump and Hillary is an idiot. If it gets to that point we're in full realignment territory and all bets are off. Ken's right that Trump's base is Democrat. Go back 25 years and his platform would be nearly indistinguishable from what Clinton I was running on except perhaps at the margins on tax rates.
Too many Republicans like John will vote for anyone with an R after their name even if their policies are completely incoherent or antithetical to conservative government because they just want someone "on their side" even if that means compromising on nearly every other point (see John's epiphany on the benefits of mercantilism). True conservatives probably won't vote for him in the majority, but since when has the anti-free shit brigade ever been that large? We're joining the rest of the "enlightened" world with a Socialist party and a Center-Left party. Manage that decline!
Libertarian Moment, my ass.
Trump's base includes the left-overs from a neglected, obsolete part of the Democrat base. Polls are nonetheless clear: 1) Democrats hate Trump more than any other candidate and 2) Trump has the highest negatives.
The 'realignment' will be a slaughter that will probably eject the moron blocks supporting Trump from influence forever. The long term benefits of denying any power to the 'dey trk r jerbs' crowds might make President Clinton worth it.
Trump's base doesn't just include them, it IS them with a shell of John my-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad sprinkled around that chewy center.
All sorts of blue states suddenly turn purple with the Don. The current likely outcome is that he loses, but the polls are much closer than they should be at this point. Hillary's negatives aren't that far behind the Don's. A goodly chunk of the Socialist wing doesn't love her, particularly the youth vote. Projecting your brilliance to the rest of your generation is a typical conceit.
The 'realignment' will be a slaughter that will probably eject the moron blocks supporting Trump from influence forever.
We can only hope.
If Trump wins, it's game over for libertarianism for a generation or two. I'll be dead by then.
The moron block never loses its influence.
Why would traditional Republican voters not vote for Trump?
Anti-illegal immigration? check
Tax cuts? check
Strong defense/offense? check
War on Terra? check
Pro 2nd amendment? he may be packing right now
Pro life? he says he is now
Who's going to vote Hillary over that? They might say they're not supporting Trump, because he's low class and it would embarrass them in front of their cosmo friends, but they're voting for him.
No he won't. He has the worst negatives of any candidate in a quarter century of polling negatives."
His negatives aren't that much worse than Hillary's.
No one is excited about voting about Hillary yet millions seem to be genuinely excited about Trump.
Both have so much baggage yet Trump isn't ashamed of his and Hillary must keep hers underwraps. Trump will expose Hillary for what she is worth if she tries to bring out his underbelly as he has already shown when he started talking about Bill's bimbo problem she shut up about the Donald.
Both of them have mine fields to walk though with their past yet Trump has the advantage that he wasn't an elected official when he took a dump and she was.
Trump will kill Hillary in the general because she can't open up on him as she would on another politician and he has no soft spots compared to her.
Well, how else is he to get you to understand him?

His wall ain't gonna be outdone by a bunch of zombie critters who don't even exist nohow.
Trump 2016
Show the man a short stubby middle fanger.
W did the same thing.
They are both really geniuses acting like morons so the constituency feels smart by comparison. It's a simple recipe, actually.
1. Play dumb
2. Voters feel smart
3. (some sort of magic)
4. Profit Get elected
But voters already feel smart. Ask anyone what they think about politicians and they'll tell you that politicians are either crooks or stupid or both. Yet the reelection rate is through the roof.
One of my biggest pet peeves is how republican voters and pundits call the Republican Party the "Stupid Party" in self deprecation because the R pols don't win easy arguments, put forth a conservative agenda, etc. Yet those pols aren't stupid -- they keep getting elected and reelected and are laughing at the rubes who, every election day, give them more money and more power.
.
Well, in all fairness, voting someone out is generally predicated on getting someone better to run against the incumbent. Those who desire to become politicians, like cops, come from a pool of undesirables to begin with. I'd not have anyone who wanted the job represent me.
Adams is very savvy and I think has a better understanding of Trump's appeal than most. That said, I always roll my eyes at the master wizard thing. The majority of GOP voters haven't even voted for him and the main reason he's in the lead is because of the sheer ineptitude of the establishment, both parties. He's slightly more persuasive than some empty suits and/or career criminals. If that makes him a master persuader that's pretty sad.
Persuasion works best on those that don't think for themselves. It's not going to force anyone, but simply trick a few.
If you think you're not his target audience.
These masturbation references are getting really obscure.
Stop reaching?
I got that one.
I like how he fancies himself as the Donald Trump Whisperer.
My Donald Trump begs too much and jumps on houseguests
Right. He wouldn't have gotten anywhere if he hadn't jumped in just at the time when the GOP was teetering on collapse. Right place at the right time, not genius.
If you can tell when it is the right time, and where the right place is, you don't need to be a genius.
Or, if you just get lucky and blunder into the right place and time.
Or that, sure.
Maybe being a genius is about the ability to call when it is the right time & place.
This
If you can tell when it is the right time and where the right place is you might be a genius though.

"What if The Donald is using mental tricks from the fields of hypnosis and persuasion to influence the electorate?"
Or it could be that Bush, Christie, Paul, Santorum, Fiorina, Cruz, Kasich, Carson, Walker, Huckabee, and Perry-- his opponents-- were a hack, corrupt hack, hack, religious zealot, failed CEO, hack, drug war hack, crazy, guy you want to punch in the face, asshole masquerading as a nice guy, and funny-in-a-not-good-way; respectively. And the fact that Trump talks about trade and the Iraq War with some degree of directness and common sense and doesn't seem like he is spouting 50 year-old Republican talking points about how the military and free trade is the best thing ever.
I have to say I have something of a soft spot for technocrats who obviously know what they are doing so I therefore favor Clinton in this election (not enough to vote for her, though) but I won't say the appeal of Donald Trump is lost on me. About Scott Adams-- I'd just say that for the last 20 years he seems like he's been mailing it in and the fact that he has to resort to low energy jokes about Donald Trump maybe tells you he is completely out of material.
Technocrats 2016!
"Or it could be that Bush, Christie, Paul, Santorum, Fiorina, Cruz, Kasich, Carson, Walker, Huckabee, and Perry-- his opponents-- were a hack, corrupt hack, hack, religious zealot, failed CEO, hack, drug war hack, crazy, guy you want to punch in the face, asshole masquerading as a nice guy, and funny-in-a-not-good-way; respectively."
You left out that hag the felon and the left-over commie thug.
who's the commie thug?
Sanders.
That Danish-right-wing wannabe? When has he ever advocated collectivizing Monsanto's assets or expropriating the property of Wall Street equity traders? This is your bugbear?! I was getting my hopes up.
"who's the commie thug?"
Willfully ignorant or really that dumb?
He's that guy in the mirror.
Trump talks about trade and the Iraq War with some degree of directness and common sense
And that's what a lot of people find attractive about him - he sounds just like one of us when we're sitting around drinking a few beers and talking about all the troubles in the world. There's always a simple solution to all these problems if somebody would just go out there and take care of it in a direct, forthright, simple manner. ISIS? Bomb the shit out of them and take their oil. Boom, problem solved, what's next? Illegal immigration? Boom, build a wall and make Mexico pay for it, what else ya got? Corporations moving production overseas? Impose big tariffs on imported goods. Boom, problem solved, you ain't got any real problems? Global Warming? Outlaw the internal combustion engine. Boom, problem solved, gimme another.
Oh wait, Trump didn't say that last one? But you recognize that that particular "easy" solution isn't at all an easy solution, right? You really think the others are? Things didn't just accidentally get to be the way they are, a hell of a lot of people worked damn hard to make things the way they are - even if this wasn't their intent any more than it was Henry Ford's intent to create massive amounts of pollution - and it's going to take a hell of a lot of damn hard work to undo that.
All good points, but Ima quibble with the part about Ford and pollution. You think the internal combustion engine is dirty? Try this: Replace all the cars in, say, New York City with horses. Before the automobile, city streets were covered in shit, literally. The smell was everywhere. As were the flies. And the rats. And all those cute microbes that live in shit.
Now, sewers and storm drains share a lot of the credit for cleaning up our cities, but the automobile replacing the horse was a huge, sorry, I mean UUUUUUGE, improvement.
^This
But electric cars solve both problems and they are sexy in a beta dude kinda way.
Boom. All problems solved if we could only increase electric car subsidies through my company which is on the verge of a new techy cool breakthrough in electric car welfare.
The wall is in the 2012 Republican platform, where they claim Congress passed laws and made plans for some such impenetrable barrier but those "liberals" (meaning commie doo-doo breaths) stonewalled it.
I dont sound like that when drinking.
Premise fail!

Clinton obviously knows what she's doing. Her strategies worked so well in Libya and Syria. And she's really good at shutting up her husband's sex victims.
what a second, are you telling me voters liked hearing a candidate did not beat around the bush and tiptoe around political correctness?
Perhaps this is why Ron paul did better than Rand.
What's is sad to me is Trump outlines how this all works in his book "art of the deal" and we need to comic artist to explain it us? I'd rather have a psychologist who could get into much more detail.

You decide.
I am the master of my wizard.
Master wizard implies that he has many years if experience, and has mastered the arts and techniques of wizardry.
Wizard master implies that he holds a position of authority or rank over other wizards.

Or it could be that the chattering classes live in such an opinion bubble that they're completely out of touch with the rest of the country.
Trump is winning because the message of limited government has failed. People just want a strong man to get them a piece of the pie. Hard work is hard and freedom is scary and the Free Market means one cannot stay in a the same job with perpetual wage increases for doing the same type and amount of work. People just want someone to make all the bad stuff go away--they don't care how he does it.
I don't know. We've never actually seen limited government. Just pandering from republicans who never deliver. Their campaign lies seem to be more of a reason to tell them to go fuck themselves.
Actually, there are cases at the state level where government has been cut. Louisiana, under Jindal, cut 30,000 state employees, balanced the budget without raising taxes, attracted companies, privatized charity hospitals etc.
Jindal has high disapproval rates due to this.
A Trumpkin comment I saw on this was "That's 30,000 jobs lost!"
Big Government = Security, but they don't want SJW stuff.
They are basically refugees from the Democratic Party, and it may not be smart to actually accept them.
"Louisiana, under Jindal, cut 30,000 state employees, balanced the budget without raising taxes, attracted companies, privatized charity hospitals etc."
And yet state payroll increased. Jindal just shuffled money from state employees to his cronies. It was massive theft and people know it. That is why his approval rates are in the shitter.
If he had actually shrunk govt and saved money he would be a hero. He didn't.
I've seen it before, where state employment positions are replaced with state contractor positions. You're basically swapping out one group of cronies for another.
That saves on pensions 25 years later.
Winner.
What people will find, though, is that Trump, if he is successful in implementing his few policy proposals (building a wall, raising import taxes to 45%, etc.) will not have made the pain go away. Hardee's is looking at using robots to take orders and (eventually) prepare food, because a $15 an hour minimum wage means that the store will not be profitable enough to justify continuing operations.
I just read a long article about Carrier moving it's manufacturing operations to Mexico. Trump is making a lot of political hay over this decision. United Brands, the parent company, seems to have healthy profit margins, which adds to people's criticisms.
But if the company can make the same level of profits by doing something other than manufacturing, then the owners would be stupid to not shut down operations completely. People don't consider that, though.
People could just not buy Carrier products. But if Carrier is the best value, they'll buy it. Cheap wins.
It's like people always bitch about customer service of large companies but most won't pay extra for it. Like a salesman used to tell me I offer price, availability, and service. Which 2 do you want.
I would agree that they want the bad stuff to go away. They want all the benefits of globalization workout any of the consequences. They want their $30 an hour manufacturing jobs and their cheap big screen tv's and smartphones.
And chicks for free.
Maybe people have figured out that they're not going to get limited government no matter who they vote for?
It's not hard to figure out why people support him. If you want to know, they're happy to tell you.
Well-written explanation. Thanks.
Does the author seem familiar at all?
Not enough typos. 😉
"This strain of conservatism believed in the free market and capitalism but did not fetishize them the way so many libertarians do."
So crony capitalists at the core.
Me, I celebrate fetishes!
"Libertarian Fetishize" is looking for a bass guitarist, by the way.
See, for example, 1824, Andrew Jackson/John Quincy Adams.
I keep telling people to expect lots of Bernie supporters to vote Trump if Clinton gets the Democrat nomination, and they look at me like I just sprouted a third eye on a stalk. You get it though, cavalier973.
And they should. Those are two different constituencies and they hate each other. Bernie's supporters are mostly white losers who expected a career out of a degree in Bioethics and now have a ton of debt. Trump's supporters are white losers who want $30/hr for turning a wrench. The former base part of their identity on the contempt they hold for the latter because racism and education. They will fall right in line with Hillary.
We'll see. I believe that at the end of the day being a White Loser is more central to their identities for many of them. They'll set aside their cultural bigotry and vote Trump rather than endorse the establishment they've come to hate by voting Hillary.
The Bernie supporter identity is built around being the opposite of Trumptards. That's never happening.
it will to a degree with some of Bernies older working class supporters. Not all Bernie supporters are hipsters and students.
The Bernie supporter identity is built around being the opposite of Trumptards. That's never happening.
Few people have been offering a "limited government" message, and I would say plenty of people don't associate limited government with liberal immigration and free trade. Limited government means less welfare (for other people) and less meddling (with that person's interests, not necessarily with others').
Quite.
Trump play's on people that know nothing about trade and economics.Just like the Bern and Hilldusa. They vary in the people they attack, but,it s all the same Top Man shit.
1. Trump knows nothing of economics.
2. Politicians, in general, know nothing of economics.
3. People, in general, know nothing of economics.
But they all vote and get elected based upon economics.
The beauty of democracy.
The Breitbart radio guy on Sirius keeps pushing the Trump trade war imbecility, even after some guy called him on it, he actually said - Even if all that Adam Smith, economies of scale , division of labor, comparative advantage stuff is right and good , he still wants to get all those jobs back from china. He also seems to believe that the jobs are physical things and we are going to have to go over there, pack'em up and bring them back.
"He also seems to believe that the jobs are physical things and we are going to have to go over there, pack'em up and bring them back."
Maybe he meant the factories and capital equipment? I try to be charitable...
It may be metaphor, but he says things like- China is beefing up their military presence in the South China Sea because they know Trump will go and get those jobs, and they aren't gonna give 'em up without a fight. It really sounds like he thinks we will need to send over carriers and take the jobs by force.
I was driving to work the other day, and a big box of jobs fell off the back of a pickup ahead. I had to swerve, hard, onto the shoulder so that I wouldn't get jobjuice all over my freshly-washed car.
The united states is the world's second largest manufacturing exporter.
We mostly export complex shit, not raw steel and thermoformed plastic toys. although we also export some of that too.
free(r) trade is what would increase our exports, not some bitch moaning about china.
we are going to grow our exports faster due to North America's growing role as an oil-producer. Getting the fuck out of the way of that growth would be a nice start. that requires all the greenies being kicked in the balls and told that they're helping no one.
the growth of china has helped prevent the US from becoming more of a moribund zero-growth economy like Europe. we should be happy for them, not moaning that other countries are benefiting from their own adoption of capitalism.
free(r) trade is what would increase our exports, not some bitch moaning about china.
Free trade is a two-way street. If you have any ideas about how to induce China to eliminate the prohibitively high tariffs they place on our goods, other than threatening the same in retaliation, I'd sure like to hear 'em! Absent that, referring to our trading position with China as "free trade" is a joke.
The best tease policy would be to eliminate all import quotas, tariffs, and subsidies. Unilaterally.
What the heck?
TRADE policy, not "tease" policy.
Go fuck yourself you ignorant yokel.
not you, cav.
Too late!
*hangs head in shame*
That's nothing to be ashamed of. You hold your head up high.
If I could do that, I'd never leave the house.
So "free trade" is "fair trade".
No, it's not.
FFS
Free trade is a two-way street.
Actually no.
If you understand comparative advantage properly, it doesn't fucking matter if China subsidizes their industries or imposses tarriffs on our goods. We still will gain a net benefit by importing whatever can be purchased more efficiently from China.
If we unilaterally dropped all our trade barriers tomorrow, we would benefit MORE than by piece-meal negotiating tit-for-tat reductions. That is literally just done to placate narrow domestic interests who want to sell their specific goods in China.
What does "comparative advantage" say about becoming dependent on your political and military rivals as suppliers because you've sacrificed your domestic industries to get your shit cheap?
Kind of leaves you in a bit of a bind when your relationship with them sours, no?
Don't know what "comparative advantage" says, but here's what some economist says about hypotheticals like yours.
Source
"Kind of leaves you in a bit of a bind when your relationship with them sours, no?"
Not really, because they are as dependent on you to buy that stuff.
It's not America's job to indulge your sinophobia.
Then presumably, World War I never happened. Um, ok.
...what?
You came back!
As Gilmore pointed out at 12:43, the U.S. has not "sacrificed its domestic industries", so there is little worry that we will be forced to rely on enemies to supply us the bullets with which to shoot them. The only real obstacle to domestic industry is government intervention--which Trump supports, by the way, through his proposed policy of trade protectionism. The government picking winners and losers in the marketplace doesn't usually turn out well.
No, what Gilmore pointed out is that we still have domestic industries. Hooray. That doesn't necessarily mean we haven't sacrificed any number of other industries. Try to find a domestic source for electronic components or clothes.
"Try to find a domestic source for electronic components or clothes"
And if I cannot find one, so the fuck what? It's integrated supply chains all the way down.
Challenge
Accepted
Still, it's a stretch to say, as is commonly heard, that the U.S. doesn't make anything anymore. In fact, Sirkin says, the U.S. makes about three-quarters of all the manufactured goods (including components) it consumes. The chemical and plastics industries are thriving, thanks to declining natural gas prices, and foreign automakers including BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, and Volkswagen have opened plants in the U.S. Master Lock returned ("onshored" or?? "insourced" in labor-speak) 100 union jobs to its Milwaukee lock factory. Among the companies that have dug in their heels and continued to manufacture domestically is Lenox, which says it's the only maker of fine bone china in the U.S.
Although it is legal to state a product is made in the USA because it was assembled there, it ain't necessarily true.
Those "components" you pointed me to (not what I meant by "component") - I guarantee they're made out of foreign sourced parts. And I can be very specific about those parts.
Show me a domestic supplier of capacitors, resistors, transistors, vacuum tubes, DIMMs, etc.
I would also guess that those "American" clothes are not made of domestically produces fabrics, although I'm not as familiar with those as with electronics.
N,R,&X
So, I point to two manufacturing companies that are employing Americans to manufacture clothes and electronics, and you return that it's not true "American manufacturing" because some of the parts are manufactured outside the U.S. Do I correctly understand what you are saying?
As I pointed out, it's legal to slap "Made in USA" on any product that's partially assembled in the US. As a practical matter, if all they're doing is sewing the "Made in USA" label on those clothes in the US, they can claim they're "Made in USA". And some manufacturer do exactly that. I do not know if that's true of the particular manufacturer you pointed to, and right now I don't have time to research it. But I'd be very surprised if they were primarily manufactured here.
Vacuum tubes?! Passive components are available from multiple suppliers on multiple continents.
Caps?
You mean DRAM? DIMM is a package/interface and describes just about nothing at the component level.
So let's look at semi fabs in general.
How many of those are in China? How many that are in China are SMIC (realizing that SMIC has been an utter failure and is at least 3 nodes behind state of the art).
Your guarantee is worth as much as Trump's best words.
Let's take a look at some of those "American" manufacturers? I picked the first one on your list that actually had a website?
http://www.illinoiscapacitor.com/company.aspx
Fabs? Yes there's still some here? but I'll point out there aren't any new ones being built here.
Rather amusingly, Global Foundries' fab in Fishkill, NY on that list. Are you aware that was previously IBM's foundry? That IBM had to pay Global Foundries $1.5 billion to assume ownership of it? That's right - rather than sell it, they had to pay Global Foundries to take it off their hands!
http://www.lohud.com/story/mon...../29553805/
Great future for manufacturing there, I'm sure!
So now you don't like the fact that the fabs are actually located on US soil. Somehow they are all magically controlled by the Comintern? Virtually NONE of the world's fabs are in China and NONE which are there are in anyway critical to the US commercially or for defense. Grow up.
So Intel's Fab 4 built in Oregon in 2004 isn't new? Or Fab 32 built in 2007? Or Fab D1X built in 2013? Or that fact that all of Intel's cutting edge nodes are (over)represented in the US? GloFo? Um, you know that's a US company, right?
Spread your ignorant bullshit somewhere else, preferably somewhere where they think a vacuum tube industrial base is essential to national security.
Dude, a fab is not something you slap up overnight. It's not a hot dog stand. It takes an average of 10 years to build, equip, and bring a fab online. A fab that came online in 2007 likely began construction in 1997. And they're expensive! Once construction starts, it's not likely the manufacturer is going to pull out. They're committed.
Look at your chart and tell me where the ones that are opening the future are going to be located.
No, what happens is that you usually re-tool the fucking fab and move it to a new process node. Show me the huge flood of new fabs in China. Show me how the US lacks access to semiconductors at any critical node. Then take your head out of your ass and realize that much of the critical semiconductor base for the military is SOI (can you tell me why?) and that the vast majority of those fabs are located in the US.
Do you think a NAND fab is critical for US national security? Because that's about all that anyone is building new, 'tard.
And I would add that fabs are capital intensive and not labor intensive, so your whole argument that "they terk er jerbz" is unfounded bullshit to begin with.
If China launches a trade war, we default on our debts to them and they suffer.
We buy our cheap shit from Vietnam instead.
Win win.
It says that it makes war a bad idea.
Has your model accounted for friction - sunk costs, transition costs, etc.?
I'm guessing not.
"Free trade is a two-way street. "
No it isn't.
You are brining actual facts to the devate? I perform a refusal.
/Trumpfan
I thought "performing a refusal" was something that Native Americans did when denying JK Rowling the right to use rain dances in her Harry Potter fanfic.
Trumpalos throw beer cans or something.
Trumpalos
I like.
We need one like this for Hillary supporters. Hillbots, I guess, but something a little more brutally dismissive would be nice.
Hilldoes?
Nice.
"Yeah, I ran into a Hilldo today. Bumper stickers on her car, the whole deal. You don't see very many of them, do you?"
That's supposed to say "Hildos"
Isn't that funnier?
Hillary supporters?
Gilmore for president.
1. Trump knows nothing of economics.
His degree is in economics. While I'm skeptical of the "science" of economics in general, to the extent it offers any useful insights, it's rather amusing to hear people who's education in the subject amounts to hanging around misses.org professing the ignorance of someone with a degree from Wharton in the subject.
Reading mises.org will provide a better education about economics than four years at any Ivy League school, I daresay.
And the evidence in support of that conclusion is - what?
see = Brown
Donald Trump, for one.
I was going to post a link to a funny picture of Trump, but I couldn't decide which one to use.
Seriously, though, someone who claims that massively increased taxes is going to bring back jobs? That's not economically sound thinking. It's possible that certain favored industries may see an increase in hiring, but at the same time people in other industries will be laid off. Remember Bush's steel tariff? The steel companies loved it, while those firms that used steel as a manufacturing component began to struggle.
I find it galling that people rarely consider the margin when discussing economics. Yeah, the big corporations might be able to weather a massive increase in taxes, er, tariffs, and people who work for favored industries would do well, but the smaller firms--which operate on a much lower margin--would go out of business, which means a reduction in competition, a decrease in quality, and an increase in prices, AND an increase in unemployement.
Trump may have majored in economics, but his trade is business, which doesn't necessarily require that one adhere to good (macro)economic policies to secure success. It would be a good business decision, for example, to bribe the government to pass a law proscribing any firm but the businessman's own from providing a certain good or service. Such a law would damage the economy, but the businessman would be making a rational step in getting such legislation passed and enforced.
Presumably, it would make economic sense to rely on China to produce our military armaments as well. No doubt they could produce them cheaper than we can, comparative advantage and all. That'd be certain to end well!
Yeah it would. If they do something stupid, then just buy from somewhere else.
Do two stupid statements cancel each other out or act as the square? The latter I think.
As I stated above, there is little evidence that we would need to rely on China for armaments and ordinance. The profit motive, if allowed to work, would allow the nation to quickly build up the necessary infrastructure to manufacture our own weapons. The only real obstacle to our increasing manufacturing is government intervention in the economy--which Trump supports, by way of trade protectionism.
Besides all that, there is an element of the fantastic in the idea that China is going to manufacture everything, and no one else will manufacture anything, and that "we don't make anything, anymore", and that American firms are weak and defenseless against perfidious and omnicompetent foreign entities. For someone who is a "nativist, a racist, and a xenophobe", you certainly display a certain disdain for your own fellow Americans, assuming you are American, of course.
On a related note, a decrease in manufacturing jobs is not evidence of a decrease in manufacturing. Thanks to technological advances and machinery, we can manufacture more stuff with fewer workers.
There is nothing we buy from China that we don't also buy from Vietnam, India, Eastern Europe, etc.
Related to cavs point, big businesses are net neutral in job creation anyway. Sometimes they hire, sometimes they lay off, it mostly balances in long term.
New jobs come from small business creation. The economic policy to bring jobs to the US is the one that encourages business startups.
Those jobs arent in China.
Well said.
Even easier way is "unintended consequences".
Bastiat wrote a short book about it that even the morons can understand.
i haven't seen or heard Trump say a goddam thing. I only know about his exploits because Reason covers this idiot with 20 articles a day. I don't have a tv so i dont get the soundbites, and other than reason, i dont go to political/ news/ current events websites. All this trump talk on reason is becoming seriously offputting. Hes a fucking turd, just like every politician, and every celebrity. If hes president, guess what? He'll be a fucking turd. If hes not potus? He'll be a turd. Whoever wins the stupid presidency will be a slimy piece of shit. The fact that people waste their time and intellect arguing over these assholes is sad. The fact that Reason seems to be obsessed with this guy is pathetic. Goddammit just stop with the fucking Trump already! STOP IT!!
Thank you.
Embrace the Trump-suck. Allow it to penetrate your soul. Resistance is futile.
You never fail to disturb Crusty.
You and The Trump are one.
I don't have a tv
Hipster.
The constant trump is annoying. But in fairness to Reason, he is the big news story at the moment. And they always have lots of dumb election stuff in presidential years. It's just how it goes. Listen to Crusty. Embrace the suck and let it flow through you. It's really just the distilled essence of American politics.
It's not that the slimy pieces of shit are so interesting?it's what their success or failure, and the ways that people react to them, say about the American people.
I'm gonna start to make my soup stock now. And after that, I am going to begin my marinara and meatballs. It will take me all day. I will watch college bball, sip bourbon, comment with you fine folks. It should be a lovely, relaxing Saturday.
Nice. House will smell awesome all day too.
I did an all day soup on Thursday for Pho. Chicken bones and beef flanken bones, plus some tendon.
It was the tits.
Im using the vegetable trimmings from the last three months, and two chicken backs. Its got at least 4 kinds of mushrooms, red onion, green onion, white onion, yellow onion, shallots, garlic, roma tomato, heirloom tomato, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, jalape?o, celery, carrots, kale, cabbage, carrot greens, turnip greens, beet greens, dill, oregano, thyme, green peas, artichoke leaves, and some more veggies I cant remember.
I've got thick cut pork chops soaking in a molasses brine for poker tonight. Also a fresh bottle of Angel's Envy Rye. Winning the game is usually a race against blacking out.
Pork chops and whiskey. And gambling. Sounds fin.
I just took my brisket out of a 10 day brine, patted it out, re-bagged it with a little liquid smoke and its in the sous vide. Debating whether I'm gonna take utmost tonight or cook it through till tomorrow at lunchtime.
Utmost=it out.
Fucking Siri.
What's your sous vide gear, sloopy?
A 20 quart polycarbonate food container and a gourmia gsv130. The container is plenty big for my uses although I think I'm gonna get a 40 quart one so I can do a few bigger roasts.
The gourmia is nice. I may get an inova if I buy a second one...which is likely.
I've been looking at the Inova.
Right now, we're busy playing with a Himalayan salt block. Mrs. Dean got a couple of massive ones for next to nothing at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show. Pretty cool. I think I like shellfish and fish off of them best - while they are cooking on a 500 degree surface, they are also curing on the salt. Gives them a nice texture.
Haven't been as thrilled with the beef we've cooked on them - I think I prefer plain ol' grilled.
I had a 2 inch block. It was a gimmick, mostly. Got it as a gift. I put it in the oven at 550 for an hour, and then served raw ahi with it.
I'd look at the Joule. Jesse has an annova, and it broke on him rather quickly.
I have a sous vide supreme that is still going strong after 5 years, but it's bulky.
Buy it. And then go out and buy average cuts of meat and cook them in it.
And get a good torch for MAPP gas and a flame spreader. Use it and a good, hot cast iron for searing.
Your culinary life will never be the same.
I have a 19lb USDA prime packer brisket. Ready to go on the smoker at 4pm so it's ready for lunch tomorrow. Just salt and pepper. No brine.
Hmm, I am also preparing to make stock.
And go fuck yourself!
Interesting vid, but I still think Hillary beats Trump easily.
And what was that part about "robotic" being an original insult? Haven't people been saying that about Al Gore for decades?
The polling appears to agree with you.
If you think polling for an election in November matters in March, I will refer you to polling circa August 2015
Can it turn around? Sure. But as of now, every other R except Trump beats Hillary. Hillary beats Trump by a fairly significant margin, and supports MBC's beliefs.
"As of now" means nothing. trends are far more significant.
here's a slightly a different perspective
the more people see of hillary, the less she is liked
When bernie leaves the process, there are millions of democrat voters who are leaving with him, permanently.
polls may capture general 'feeling', but the gap between stated preferences and actions are enormous.
calling some polling margin significant at this point is silly. call me back in september/october.
Plus, she is going down for her "convenience".
we talked about that the other day. I think regardless of the outcome of the FBI investigation, its going to fall on her like an anvil. if the DoJ refuses to indict, there will be a parade of "ex-FBI" personnel willing to tell-all. the Trump=Hitler noise in the media has been largely at attempt to avoid talking about her. That won't work 6 months from now.
This.
And regardless of the outcome of the Trump kerfuffle, the Repubs will keep her crap public.
Fine. I'll play that game. Anything striking when you compare the two charts?
Actually, your chart is ancient.
Here.
It better illustrates your point.
trumps #s largely reflect the fact he fought off 5 other candidates over the past year. Did you have an argument or is that it?
the first point i made is that polling is generally pretty shit. See = polls on trump 6-8 months ago versus actual results
the second point is that hillary is barely beating Bernie in big states. she has weak fundamental support. and while some of that will re-consolidate, a lot of it will not.
Thirdly, her legal problems are going to get worse before they get better.
Trump can beat her. it doesn't mean he will, but to pretend that some poll-margin in March makes a significant difference is stupid.
I don't see a lot of bad news coming for Trump. I think its already priced in.
Hillary, though - yikes. Tractor trailer loads of bad news are in her future. The FBI investigation, lawsuits/investigations to get her email released to the public, investigations into the Clinton Foundation. Some of that can and will be buried, but at some point it just can't, especially during an election.
And, there's the fact that she is a terrible campaigner. The more exposure she has, the higher her negatives. And you can't get to a general election without having to go out in public.
In Trump v Hillary, I'd pick Trump at this point. But, its a long way to go, and a lot can happen.
"I don't see a lot of bad news coming for Trump."
I do, and you would too if you gave a shit about reality. Even if the GOP doesn't man up and pull the plug at a convention, Hillary will thump him. Goldwater had better chances.
"there are millions of democrat voters who are leaving with him, permanently."
No. They will fall in with Hillary if she's up against Trump. They will see him as the AC.
"If you think polling for an election in November matters in March"
It does when everyone knows one of the guys running.
Polling this early didn't matter in the past because people were just unaware. With Trump, everyone knows of him and most hate him.
At this point in 1979, polls showed Carter handily beating Reagan.
Apropos
Trump is winning because he's promising to start up new witch hunts - against illegals, muslims, blacks, or the mentally ill, doesn't really matter. Everyone is excited to run around with pitch forks. This kind of political gang warfare happens all the time, just not so much in the US. But now here it is. They know it will ruin the economy (protectionism and spending) but they don't really care as long as they get to run around with their Rugers rounding up illegals or making Muslims accept Christ or getting revenge for every perceived racial slight in history.
Nailed it!!!
It must be wonderful to go through life certain everyone who disagrees with you does so out of illegitimate and immoral reasons.
It must be wonderful to go through life certain everyone who disagrees with you does so out of illegitimate and immoral reasons.
Hey! That's just what John said!
What are you, a third grader?
Am not!!!
Are too!
it really, really must. I wish I could fit my head that far up my own ass, as they say.
Many Trump supporters don't give a shit about ruining the economy because they've already been kicked out of it.
And none of the establishment has noticed. "I'm doing good. The numbers are up."
"Wall. Mexicans. Muslims. China. Trump."
Seems to be working, because it's all anyone in the media has talked about.
The serif don't like it.
Has there ever been a "Master Wizard" president before?
If not, we'll have another historic first!
Wasn't Wilson a Grand Wizard?
Exalted Cyclops?
I don't think Wilson was a member at all actually, just a defender. I believe Truman was but never rose very high in the ranks.
Now Robert Byrd was an Exalted Cyclops but he never made it to president.
The way I heard it was that Truman joined the Klan and paid his $20 dues and then quit when he found out he might lose the Catholic vote because of it.
My impression was that a Democrat politician from a southern or border state was about as routine as a Republican one from the Northeast joining the Rotary Club. It just kinda came with the job.
"See, I belong to a certain secret society -- I don't believe I gotta mention it's name...."
I think in an old post Scott Adams was saying Obama and Bill Clinton both were. Not sure if you were asking a serious question.
Oh, I think he also said Kanye is one. So watch out.
Trump is the three of spades. He happened to survive due to various personal characteristics and luck, and now that he has been leading the polls, people are saying the odds are 52:1 that this particular person could have risen to the top by chance, so he must be a genius at manipulating people, he's planned it out, he's a master wizard.
Bullshit. His business track record speaks for his business acumen. He's just an entertaining blowhard, and people are sick and tired of being tossed around by the whims of a coercive government. People also get sick and tired of being tossed around by the whims of General Motors or landlords or Kelloggs, but those companies always have competitors, and people get more choice in how they get tossed around than they do with a monopolistic government which has no competition, and is coercive to boot and won't let you ride a bicycle or take the bus to work, or stop buying cereal, or buy a house in lieu of renting.
So people like Trump. He's their popoff valve. Whether they have enough anger at coercive monopolistic government to keep venting all the way into November is anybody's guess.
Bullshit. That doesn't explain why his biggest cheer lines are "Build a wall!" and "Bomb the hell out of ISIS!" People are not scared, anxious, sick or tired. They are just spoiling for a fight against a vulnerable minority. And any scapegoat-able group will do.
It is totally irrational. It is not like there has ever been an act of terror perpetrated by a Muslim on American soil.
The far greater threat is home grown terrorism - mental illness. That kills a lot more people. The "Muslim" hysteria is just a distraction. Plus we commit far greater acts of terror on Muslim soil then they on ours. On a daily basis. The idea that people support Trump because they are 'being kicked around by the government' is just ludicrous.
The far greater threat is home grown terrorism
Public lynchings were never the greatest threat to African Americans. Even at their height maybe 150 out of several million black people were lynched. By your logic black Americans were just pants shitting about lynchings. I mean what were the chances it happened to them? About the same as my or your chances of being killed by a terrorist.
And as a side note domestic terrorists are not the threat that Muslim terrorists are. There hasn't been a serious domestic terror incident since OKC. Meanwhile Muslims have given us Fort Hood, Chatanooga, Boston, San Bernidino and this little incident we like to call 911, among others.
Sandy Hook, Santa Barbara, Colorado Spring I & II. You have a short memory.
Those were not domestic terrorists. They were mentally ill nuts. And they don't add up to anything close the Muslim list.
You have a defective memory.
domestic terrorists = mentally ill nuts. It's all the same thing, but the appeal of Trump is indulging people's belief that they are different - thereby justifying a new war. Though to be fair, Trump has pointed out that there are always 'red flags and early warning signs' in cases like this, which is why we need to re-institutionalize. And bomb their families, but maybe he backtracked on that one.
domestic terrorists = mentally ill nuts. It's all the same thing,
No, its not, unless you want to claim every serial killer is a domestic terrorist. Terrorists are people who kill to advance a cause. Their cause may be nuts, and thinking their tactics will advance the cause may be nuts, but there's a difference between mental illness and using violence to advance a fringe political cause.
it is not "all the same thing". there's some problems with "mental illness" as a concept but calling anything and everything an illness (implicitly not your fault) just makes the term meaningless. like how far are you from calling pedophilia a mental illness? In the future I guess everyone will be sick for fifteen minutes?
Let me get this straight. Home grown terrorism = mental illness; but "other" terrorism =/= mental illness"?
It's all the same - mischief. The notion that we can 'build a wall' or kill an entire group of people to save us from our own self-destruction is just silly. But people already know this, they just think a war will be a fun distraction.
Mental illness = mischief?
*** googles "mischief" ***
In United States criminal law, mischief is an offense against property that does not involve conversion. It typically involves any damage, defacement, alteration, or destruction of property. Common forms include vandalism, graffiti, or some other destruction or defacement of property other than arson.
Now I confuse.
Bomb the hell out of ISIS is pretty understandable. The wall thing is a little more nuts.
The fact that you think this is a decent comeback just demonstrates what an idiot you are.
Scarecrow, what' interesting about Adams is he has been calling Trump's success from way back. This isn't some post facto thing.
There's an old story about a spammer who sends out 1M emails touting some stock; half to rise, half to drop. Next week, he sends out a half million similar spams, but only to the previous half which was correct. He repeats this ten times, bringing his spam list down to 1000 people who have proof -- yuge proof! -- that this guy has predicted stock fluctuations ten times in a row. What a track record!
So now he touts some stock he wants to short or buy, to all of them, and all 1000 go out and buy or dump, then he cashes in.
The answer to your answer is that we only see his historical claim because he was right. How many other times has he made a claim that turned out wrong? How many other people have made claims that didn't pan out? We don't hear about them because they were wrong and not interesting.
It's the same thing. Scott Adams looks like a freaking genius because he was the three of spades, and what are the odds?
"His business track record speaks for his business acumen."
True. But it also speaks to his ability to get people to make deals with him. His ability to pursuade others.
His rhetoric is like his deal-making- start with an outrageous gambit and adjust it as things progress. And, of course, be loud, brassy, and super confident. Many, many people fall for this. It is typical CEO behavior from what I've seen.
Yet another reason why Trump will do better than the polls now say.
MUUUUUSSSSLIIIIIIMMMMSSSSSS
What is a kill list of 36 law enforcement officers between friends? It is like those rapes in Europe, just one big cultural misunderstanding. They didn't know you couldn't randomly kill cops here like they do at home.
Swedish Town Cancels Earth Hour: Nobody Wants to Turn Off Lights, Too Scared of Violent Migrants
afraid of the dark
RACIST!
I bet they cross to the other side of the street when it gets dark.
Couldn't they just have it during the day?
That would propel him if America shared your insane fixation with Muslims. They don't.
Yeah, why would anyone fixate on the world's largest source of terror, oppression, and anti-liberty beliefs? How silly. We should ignore that trivial shit and focus on the latest violent moron to auto-Darwinate by attacking a cop. Or maybe on a cop that shot a dog. Or some unlucky person who lost their home to eminent domain abuse. Those are all obviously far more worthy of "fixation" than tens of thousands of people murdered by a followers of a huge religion that's at war with the world....
Trump provides validation to the grievance collectors that all their work is not for naught. His appeal is assuring people that their misery is caused by 'the other'. And he offers the ideal solution to the problem: protecting your right to own Grievance Unloading Numerators.
So is it your opinion that all misfortune is self created? That it can never be created by other forces or someone else?
It is my opinion that the earth is cursed, and in sorrow shall we eat of it for all the days of our lives.
How does that make him different than Hillary or Bernie? They blame misery on greed, racism, sexism, the 1%, etc., etc.
No, they blame Bush or generic Republicans.
It doesn't. Congratulations, you realize you support just another Democrat.
The other Democrats support the Second Amendment and want to end Obamacare? I missed that.
And replace it with the government taking care of everyone who can't afford it. No dying in the streets, remember? No doubt those checks he wrote to Hillary and Schumer had "protect the 2nd" written in the memo line.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03.....trade.html
The money quote from this is When I learned about the impact of trade agreements, the theory was that workers would be 'released' into the labor market and hired back at slightly lower salaries," Mr. Autor said. "That's not what happened. And no amount of cheaper air-conditioners will make these workers whole."
The Republican Party and the Washington Conservatives have nothing to offer these people. The Democrats can at least offer them welfare, Libertarians empty platitudes about freedom. Conservatives? Not even that because according to the Washington Conservative world view they shouldn't exist. They should be out getting lower paying jobs and enjoying the wonders of cheap air conditioning. Tax cuts and cheap shit doesn't help you if you don't have a job. It is pretty difficult to care about ISIS, abortion or the prevalence and acceptance of sodomy when you can't pay your bills.
If the GOP could cut the taxes and regulations that hobble US manufacturing, it would make it less likely that companies would outsource. But of course that would be fought tooth and nail, mostly by Democrats.
When you have free trade with a country with a roughly equal standard of living like Canada or the UK, you get richer. When you have open markets with a country like Mexico, Mexico's standard of living improves and the US standard falls until the two meet in the middle. That is great if you are Mexico or part of the I want cheap shit ruling class in the US, not so good if you are an average American. Conservatives are shitting their pants over Trump because his supporters force them to confront this fact.
It's not as if free trade with a poorer country hurts the U.S., it's that it's a tradeoff where some Americans benefit, and some Americans get worse off.
Politicians aren't accustomed to talking in terms of tradeoffs, everything they support is supposed to be 100% good for everyone every time.
But the idea that you need to be rich to benefit from "cheap shit" is silly, if free trade doesn't take your job it will increase your spending power by making stuff cheaper. So it depends on whether you have one of those kinds of jobs that gets eroded by free trade with poor countries.
It's not as if free trade with a poorer country hurts the U.S., it's that it's a tradeoff where some Americans benefit, and some Americans get worse off.
Depends on your definition of "hurt". I would say leaving millions of people structurally unemployed most definitely "hurts the country" even if overall GNP rises. Again, go back and look at the money quote from the article. These people are not getting new jobs at lower wages as was thought.
But the idea that you need to be rich to benefit from "cheap shit" is silly,
I never said only the rich benefit. What is silly is the idea that cheap shit somehow magically makes up for long term structural unemployment and loss in the average standard of living. Sure you have a shitty job or no job, but you have a cheap Iphone and Uber!!
I have never met a single advocate of free trade who has paid even the smallest price for it. Yet, they constantly talk about how it is a moral imperative. Very convenient isn't it?
Talking about structural employment brings us to the culture war.
In the world of journalists and campaign concultants, "economic issues" and "culture issues" are packed into separate, vacuum-sealed boxes.
In the real world, it's really difficult to see where one ends and the other begins.
Which is why it's beyond baffling to see people saying, "why are you babbling about the threat to marriage when there are so many children growing up in poverty and not getting good work experience or a good education?"
Charles Murray and other people are willing to brave all sorts of insults and look at the sociological picture of wealthy families which *just happen* to be intact and traditional - in the sense of a mom and dad married to each other, and kids - and poorer families which *just happen* to be broken and dysfunctional.
"But, but, so and so is rich and is from a broken family, and so and so is from an intact family and just lost his job to Mexico!" as if the SoCons ever said that *all* broken families are ruined forever or *all* intact families are doing wonderfully.
But of all the ideas for uplifting people and making them richer, the idea of having intact families is one of the few tried and true things which has a measurable statistical effect.
"How can you babble about family values when there are children not doing as well in life as their parents?"
/facepalm.
I am all for intact families but they don't get around the realities of the international market. The people who are losing their jobs at Carrier won't find new ones by getting married and having a stable family.
This may come as a shock to you but even stable families are poor and have shitty lives sometimes.
That's what I just got through saying. There's plenty of badly-off traditional families.
So for their sake, maybe there's a case for tariffs so that people who've held jobs for years won't suddenly have those jobs pulled out from under them. (though this will be a holding action, it won't preserve the jobs forever)
But in the broad sweep of things, single motherhood and bad values are going to do more to damage employment prospects of people than any number of Mexicans or Chinese foreigners.
Mexicans may take away a hard-working family man's job.
Single motherhood and bad values can undermine a man so that he doesn't get the job in the first place.
Not all the time, not for everyone, but enough to affect the statistics, including the economic statistics.
And while there's only so much one can do in the purely political realm to build up a culture of marriage and intact families, at least we can *actively oppose* any public policy which undermines the family - eg, by forcing people to ignore the true meaning of marriage, or to treat marriage as a luxury good or interesting lifestyle choice, or to ignore the connection between marriage and the perpetuation of the species.
Don't forget where the very term "economics" comes from - "okionomia" or "household management."
So do dogs need marriage?
[Roseanne Barr joke deleted]
I have never met a single advocate of free trade who has paid even the smallest price for it. Yet, they constantly talk about how it is a moral imperative. Very convenient isn't it?
If one opposes Free Trade, then one opposes the Free Market, and is just being coy about his preference for a government-managed economy. Criticism of Free Trade can just as easily be applied to technological progress, since machines have arguably destroyed as many manufacturing jobs as trade supposedly has, yet I don't hear people calling for the government to destroy machines.
In addition, the Free Market observably works best when there is competition. Barriers to trade reduce competition, which reduces the quality and quantity of available goods and services, while increasing the cost of same.
The true cause of people not being able to find work is government intervention in the economy--the regulatory burden and tax expenses bestow died by goverbment, as well as government payouts to unemployed persons, allowing them to turn their noses up at work that may not pay their preferred amount of wages.

In addition, the Free Market observably works best when there is competition. Barriers to trade reduce competition, which reduces the quality and quantity of available goods and services, while increasing the cost of same.
While it may be obvious that competition stimulates quality, color me skeptical of the proposition that quality improves proportionately with an increase in the sources of competition. Competition functioned quite nicely as a stimulus for quality and quantity between domestic competitors for many long years.
As a bonus, you also retained domestic infrastructure and expertise, which also facilitate the development of future improvements.
Contra economists, a demand does not necessarily cause a supply to spring forth from the earth like mushrooms. For any number of processes, infrastructure and expertise take a long time to develop, and aren't going to magically appear over night when your foreign supplier becomes your political or military opponent.
"Competition functioned quite nicely as a stimulus for quality and quantity between domestic competitors for many long years."
Then why did North American cars suck so much ass until the Japanese came to show how it's done?
"For any number of processes, infrastructure and expertise take a long time to develop, and aren't going to magically appear over night when your foreign supplier becomes your political or military opponent."
A chance I am willing to take.
"... color me skeptical ..."
*Opens box of crayons, selects one*
How about...Burnt Sienna?
the proposition that quality improves proportionately with an increase in the sources of competition.
Proportionately? I don't know about that... An increase in quality at some level, however is almost a guarantee.
Perhaps I should say, rather, an increase in value. Government deregulation of the airline industry most likely lowered the "quality" of the flying experience, but I would argue that the value of flying increased as the price dropped. And, for those who wish to maintain the higher quality flying experience, there is the higher-priced first class option.
Contra economists, a demand does not necessarily cause a supply to spring forth from the earth like mushrooms.
And yet, with a Free Market, people find that they can get what they want much more quickly, and in much greater quantities, than those who live with a government-managed economy.
Fearing that we will be compelled to buy our bullets from China is unfounded. We already have infrastructure in place to make whatever we want; the obstacle is government intervention, not foreign competition.
The average person can afford to fly to a different continent now. How practical was that in 1977? Aside from the ability to lay flat in business class today, I have more and better entertainment options flying in economy to another country than I had in business class 10 years ago. And in real terms it is cheaper. Cars are much better than they were 40 years ago. Clothing is much cheaper and at least as good. Food is cheaper and yet farm employment has cratered even from 1970's levels.
Complete economic creationists. BAH!
Not sure what your point is. Are you claiming there was no technological advancement prior to 1977? That there wouldn't have been any since if we hadn't outsourced?
You're whining about people losing jobs. Automation has destroyed more jobs than any outsourcing. Why aren't you clamoring to break the machines?
Because, as I pointed out, you don't just lose jobs, you also lose the infrastructure and the expertise.
You can make the case that automation creates as many jobs as it destroys. But that goes out of the window when the entire industry moves offshore.
The establishment doesn't seem to acknowledge that life can suck, and that when the economic winds blow, they often...blow, if you know what I'm saying.
I doubt Trump can solve this, but at least he doesn't ignore it, lie about it, or stick a happy face on it.
Of course, the other part of the equation is that life often does, indeed, frequently suck. It's almost like the world is, what's the phrase, a "vale of tears."
Conservatives used to understand there was more to economic policy than next quarter's GNP numbers. They seem to have forgotten that and will sell out anyone or anything for short term gain.
This is an argument among conservatives. Libertarians don't have a dog in the fight. Even if free trade is bad for the country, Libertarians can just point to their assumption that freedom is the penultimate public good and walk away. Conservatives can't do that. They are not libertarians and usually claim the country has a right to control its borders, something libertarians don't claim because the arguments for total open trade apply just as well to total open immigration.
Conservatives need to figure out what the hell they are other than a dim witted for of Libertarian who doesn't like Pot and Mexicans. Most of them don't seem to be up to the task.
There are so many kinds of conservatives I don't want to generalize - I see conservatives as anyone who's anti-prog, which covers a lot of ground since progs do so much bad stuff that there's a lot of people opposing at least some of the stuff they do.
But the conservative establishment, the circle-jerk of politicos and aides and journalists, etc. - they deserve pretty much any invective that can be thrown at them - they've pissed all over the brand and then presume to excommunicate any conservative who disagrees with their crap.
But the conservative establishment, the circle-jerk of politicos and aides and journalists, etc. -
That is who I am talking about. The average conservative on the street is much brighter.
No he's not. This election demonstrates that the Average Con is a pig-ignorant moron.
Libertarians don't have a dog in the fight. Even if free trade is bad for the country, Libertarians can just point to their assumption that freedom is the penultimate public good and walk away.
And libertarians would have their heads up their asses for doing so. Freedom comes in different flavors. The freedom to trade for the best and cheapest goods with foreign countries is one freedom.
However, that is also going to come at the cost of eviscerating a number of your domestic industries ("comparative advantage! hooray!"), leaving you dependent on your foreign suppliers.
"Dependence" is not often considered a form of freedom, except maybe by libertarians. That was one of the reasons our founders did indeed support protectionist policies to encourage the development of domestic industry, a model we did quite nicely with for many long years.
I have every right to be dependent. Feel free to pay 50% more for Made In America. Leave other out of it.
I have every right to be dependent.
At least until your mother kicks you out of her basement.
Feel free to pay 50% more for Made In America.
I'm curious - by what logic do you assume that getting the best price today ensures the best outcome tomorrow?
Leave other out of it.
Can't do that anymore than people who lose their their jobs can opt out of your free trade preference.
Sorry, but there are some things that have collective consequences, and will have to be decided by collective consensus. Like it or not, being a part of society means being the victim, or beneficiary of other people's choices.
Can't do that anymore than people who lose their their jobs can opt out of your free trade free market preference.
Same thing.
You know who really can't opt out? People who live in government-managed economies.
Like it or not, being a part of society means being the victim, or beneficiary of other people's choices.
People don't have a right to work in a particular industry for a particular wage. That would mean that they have a right to obtain a portion of other people's property without their consent. One cannot "own" a job. A job is an agreement between employer and employee, in which the employee agrees to give a particular type and amount of labor in exchange for a portion of the employer's income and/or assets. One has full rights to his own labor and the product of that labor, but he cannot morally force others to use his labor at a particular price.
"Sorry, but there are some things that have collective consequences, and will have to be decided by collective consensus. "
Fuck off slaver. If you can't hack it, that's your problem. Get used to it: if trade and immigration don't kill your idyll of the 1960 factory worker, then automation and 3d printing will.
Just shut up about 3d printing. You don't understand it. It has a place in prototyping, custom part fabrication, and very low run rate production (think obsolete part replacement). It doesn't replace much; it grows the pie.
BULL
SHIT!
You think conservative means stasis. It doesn't. Why aren't you out in front of John Deere protesting all the lost agricultural jobs? Why aren't you demanding every robot factory be condemned? Why aren't you banning all oil imports? This has nothing to do with jobs or competition and everything to do with who is competing.
"They should be out getting lower paying jobs and enjoying the wonders of cheap air conditioning."
Yup. If you think you have a right to slap on a tariff on my purchases so you can get paid $28/hr to turn a wrench, you can FOAD.
"Tax cuts and cheap shit doesn't help you if you don't have a job."
Yes it does because cheap stuff means what money you have goes further, and tax cuts (depending on what's been cut) engender job creation.
I thought the amiable but incompetent planner was supposed to come before the Strongman not all at the same time... Hayek was full of it.
Isn't Obama the amiable but incompetent planner?
I suppose that works, I guess I thought we would have a longer wind up before hand.
Amiable?
No. Petty, vindictive and cold. Not amiable.
I thought the amiable but incompetent planner was supposed to come before the Strongman not all at the same time... Hayek was full of it.
I haven't been squirreled in a while.
I think Adams goes a tad overboard with his free-will-is-an-illusion schtick.
Still, Trump has plenty of experience making money by persuading people to buy stuff from him and/or watch his act on TV. He's a skilled persuader and he didn't simply stumble onto his campaign tactics
"Wow, the voters are responding to me! how did that happen?" /stuff Trump doesn't say
I'd say he obviously uses his knowledge of the media to get the coverage he wants. The media loves/hates him, they use each other for their own respective ends, which aren't that different.
I have no idea if Trump studied hypnosis or whatever, but we can explain his actions without it.
Adams says that free will is an illusion because of his hypnosis training, but even most hypnotists don't come to that conclusion. They say that some people want to be manipulated and others don't, which is why not everyone can be hypnotized and not everyone likes Trump or, at least, they choose to be persuaded by someone else.
This isn't the candidate you're looking for...you don't need to check his policies...
LOL.
Has much been written about Trump's education policy? "Bringing education local" is actually a good policy. Or could be if it was more than a slogan.
That would be nice if he didn't make a thing about his willingness to change his mind.
And it's great that he's candid about it rather than doubling down on bad ideas, but the reason he gets away with it is he's trying to cultivate a cult of personality, "trust me, I make deals, I do make beautiful buildings, if I change my mind it's because I've found a more beautiful idea."
"That would be nice if he didn't make a thing about his willingness to change his mind."
Of course, he's not trustable in the slightest. I think most of the alternatives can be trusted to double down on bad ideas though.
Adams has repeatedly said that he's not a Trump supporter, but he repeatedly defended Trump's rhetoric when it was criticized. At least that's what happened when Scott Horton interviewed him.
I think he has a point. If nothing else, Trump is on the short end of a double standard.
Much of the hatred of him comes from his style of speaking. Somebody dubbed some video of him speaking with a poshy British accent. Allofasudden, it doesn't come off as abrasive and confrontational. Its spooky.
The funny part is that i immediately assumed you meant the really faggy one which makes the same exact point
Holy shit that's funny! The part where he says "It's mean, it's nasty, it's vicious. And it's beautiful" was just perfect.
That's absolutely bizarre, isn't it? Trump, being the avatar of abrasive New York City made flesh is beloved in the Southwest, Mid-West and Dixie, yet despised in the urban mid-Atlantic to New England corridor.
that's really unfair to 8 million otherwise not-quite-so-assholy people
I'm specifically dealing with stereotypes over reality.
YOU FUCKIN LOOKIN AT ME??!
I don't agree regarding the Midwest. He didn't win IA, MN, or KS. He barely won Missouri but culturally the state has more in common with Arkansas than Minnesota.
But he won MI and IL, which population-wise is pretty much the center of the region, no?
It would probably be more convenient for you to equate a couple of the bigger states with the rest of the region, but the majority of Midwesterners do not live in those states or consider them representative. They are generally nice to one another but there is a lot of division going on under the surface. You would probably find it hard to believe how much derision I got after moving to Kansas from Minnesota, since they're basically the same to most non-Midwesterners.
Also, Kasich won Ohio which has a bigger population than Michigan. The Midwest is pretty schizo.
Scott makes predictions that are for the most part borne out. None of the pinheads painting Hitled mustaches on his cartoons mentions those. If the Political State were to let us gamble on political outcomes the guy could make a lot of money. We would also gain a sensitive mechanism for detecting election fraud.

The genre of "Brits whinging that a group of crazy people at a university or conference was equivalent to Hannibal at the gates portending the collapse of Western civilization" was entertaining for a while, but now it's just tiresome.
Now it's tiresome?
Pat Condell had a good run
Scott Adams cartoon: Guy works in a cubicle and his boss has dumb ideas. Hilarious.
Yeah, it's dumb. So dumb I wish I'd thought of it first so I could be rolling in dough like Adams.
Neuro-linguistic programming is pseudoscience on par with crystal healing, Breathairianism, and phrenology.
Um, no. There are cult-like aspects to some proponents, but in general it is describing real psychological mechanisms.
Tell us more.
You want the namshub, don't you?
Well, you're not getting the namshub, at least not from me.
Of course I won the fucking swordfight. I'm the greatest sword fighter in the world. And I wrote the software.

Phrenology was very much the best science of its day. That it ended up being inaccurate is not to say it was fundamentally incorrect.
Modern science has indeed established links between mental activity and particular structures of the brain. Just not of the particular sort or in the manner the phrenologists thought.
Which is to say that NLP is probably similar- there is some there there but in the matter of details we are likely substantially missing the mark.
No, it isn't. Setting aside the commercial origins of NLP, the major difference between Phrenology and NLP is that NLP arose during a time when its primary claims were able to be empirically tested in both naturalistic and laboratory environments. We possess a large amount of data that falsifies the theoretical underpinnings of NLP. Indeed, NLP is exactly what Asimov meant when he coined the phrase 'wronger than wrong'.
How many Poles does it take to NLP you into screwing in a lightbulb?
The reasons for Trump's success are because a lot of people are sick and tired of idiotic shit like this where a person had all kinds of racism and hate ascribed to them without a single quote to support the claim.
I understand Toure is a race-baiting imbecile. But read the comments. Some of those people might be otherwise intelligent. And they're calling anybody that doesn't tow their line a racist piece of shit.
in-group signaling. it feels great, and it is rewarded.
its also super easy on the internet. the interesting stuff happens when you take these people and make them have the same conversation in a room full of people that they have zero actual "read" on.
No he's popular because he offers validation and a father figure to blue collar losers who are too dumb to think.
Trump is clearly not a "master wizard".
He is a Grand Wizard.
Indeed, for one must fight with Balrog of Morgorth from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak in order to become the White Wizard.
Damn, i just thought you had to be sheriff of some podunk town in Arkansas
Arkansas, Moria, who's keeping track
Cross won't burn, nobody home...it ain't like it used to be.
I see someone stole my joke.
Its not *your* joke. Its *a* joke, and a low-hanging, easy one at that. LIKE ME.
You can't "steal" a joke; a joke is an agreement between the teller and the listener to provide amusement for each party.
Wait a second...I think I've been arguing too much today.
I think he uses mental tricks to make Reason shit its collective pants.
Immigration, wall. Not hard to do.
Scott makes very good points, and is attacked by Dem and GOP trolls for "supporting" The Don. Like Northern Ireland in the 70s, personality cult fanatics draw battle lines and stalk heretics in the comments section there. The same thing is happening in Brazil with elected incumbents' supporters now taking to the streets to respond to US-backed military coup protester impersonators.
The same thing is happening in Brazil? Cara, ou voc? est? b?bado, ou doido, ou ambos. E Dilma ? uma santa, ? claro.
I don't know Portugese, but I do know a little Spanish, and I believe Los Doyers said the yokel was either drunk, a madman or both.
silly, he said, "OMG WOW LOL WIN"
you had me until you suggested that the US was funding all anti-government protests around the world.
Hey, speaking of Trump, anti-Trump protestors are blocking roads in Phoenix!
The protesters parked their cars in the middle of the road, unfurling banners reading "Dump Trump" and "Must Stop Trump," and chanting "Trump is hate." Traffic was backed up for miles, with drivers honking in fury.
Protesters were chanting, "Donald Trump, shut it down, Phoenix is the people's town."
http://www.azfamily.com/story/.....tain-hills
Three have been arrested so far. I expect more will be. And rightly so.
Courtesy of Iowahawk: Breaking: Arizona Trump Protesters Celebrate Shutting Down Highway, Creating 300,000 More Trump Voters
I think those protesters will have an enormous effect in changing the minds of the same people who have elected Sherrif Joe Arapio since 1993
because of their overwhelming numbers. how can "the people's will" be denied?
Sheriff Joe gets elected over and over again because of the simple fact that most voters don't see criminals as human beings worthy of rights.
maybe so. i was just pointing out that this particular protest is a pretty self-defeating activity.
Stuff like this will only make people sitting on the fence to jump into Trumpland and become Trumpalumpas.
Trumpalos, please.
Trumpussys, cause they are getting royally fucked.
Is "Trumpalos" in reference to something?
Juggalos
Huh.
I still prefer Trumpalumpas
Trumpleupaguses?
the reason i think its probably apropos is that it refers to the same demographic
Sort of related, and equally depressing/amusing =
Someone should inform protestors that sarcasm doesn't translate well through protest-signs
This probably an excellent example of how the cops aren't there to protect us from the criminals, they are there to protect the criminals from us.
The road block would have been over in fifteen minutes otherwise. And the protestors would probably be in the ER, if they weren't just left in a ditch.
Shea Boulevard is literally the only way into Fountain Hills from Scottsdale to highway 87, so in effect they're trapping regular people who happen to live or work there. Not a great way to promote your cause.
Unless you are just blocking the entrance to the venue, that's what these road block protests always do. I'm surprised people pulling these stunts aren't arrested immediately, but the cops always seem to let them go on way too long.
Again, what would you do if you were a German Jew in 1933?
You're talking about, quite possibly, Mexican nationals, or the US citizens they have married, or their children, who are probably scared shitless that Trump is going to round them up and deport them. Which is , in fact, exactly what he has said he's going to do, in spite of the Trump apologists' insistence that Trump isn't really going to do any of that crazy shit. If you think about it, it is entirely sane for the people Trump has targetted in his speeches (Mexicans, immigrants, Muslims) as enemies to be fucking rioting at his rallies right now.
The headline i saw in my mind =
Cuban Political Prisoners, Still in Prison, Less-Than-Elated by Obama Visit
"Inequality"?? Unpossible! Cuba cured poverty by making everyone poor! this has been explained many times by eminent economists like Matt Damon and Sean Penn.
Cuba is rich in authenticity!
"The White House says the first such trip by a U.S. president since Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution is a step toward better lives for Cuban people suffering under a U.S. embargo."
Right. Those poor people are suffering under the US embargo, not those slimy commie thugs.
Exactly. Everyone else is trading with Cuba.
Oh, and the title is "Archmage", not "Master Wizard", you D&D knownothings.
LIGHTNING BOLT!! LIGHTNING BOLT!!!
XD
Oh I think I know a thing or two about Drunk & Disorderly
That's my favorite of the CSI franchises.
You idiot protesters, this is just going to increase Trump's appeal.
And what is it with leftists shutting down streets. Something a little kid would do in a temper tantrum. You have no right to do that and should be arrested on the spot.
So when it comes to them, they deserve every avenue to speak, but say it's a conservative speaker on a college campus, well lets blockade the entrance, throw stuff at the speaker, and pull the fire alarm. Fuck those assholes
First you say they should be arrested for blocking a street then you say they deserve every avenue to speak! Make up your mind!
I work in Downtown Oakland and have to deal with this shit all the time. You arn't fucking changing the world by blocking 880 or 580, or having your kids lay down on the train tracks at the Oakland Port (seriously). If anything you are converting people away from what you believe in, just like we saw Trump's support go up after the Chicago protests.
You are saying your 'rights' are more important than the rights of others. It's as if you took a megaphone and shouted over someone when they were trying to speak. You don't believe in freedom and are 100x more Fascist then Trump ever will be
"...having your kids lay down on the train tracks at the Oakland Port..."
Late-term abortion-rights protestors?
Something a little kid would do in a temper tantrum.
Or maybe a member of the resistance in Nazi Germany, which is probably closer to how they think of themselves.
If YOU thought that a literally out-and-out racist, fascist government was about to come to power, what would YOU do ?
Well first and foremost what you want to do with that kind of regime is get yourself publicly listed as a dissident.
Do note that the fascists haven't actually taken power yet. Or are you supposed to be too much of a pussy to even try to stop them? Just accept the inevitable tyranny because, gosh, you wouldn't want to be targeted by them IF they actually achieved power.
I'm sorry I guess we need to be clearer about the level of delusion in our little hypothetical here. Am I supposed to be paranoid or not?
The hypothetical is set in a fucktarded universe in which protesting people who are going to violate your human rights makes them more popular.
NLP was pushed at one time as a self help technique. It works. You can change your mind by using mantras/NLP.
No. Scott Adams is a has-been who is trying to uses fancy-talk bullshit to make the retards who like Donald Trump think he is smart, and that they are smart for 'understanding' what the Don is doing.
Trump was being written off in 2015. Adams did not write him off and at this point Trump is at the top of the dog pile. Does Adams know something you don't? Or was he just lucky?
There is no way Adams knows more about American politics than a 12 year old Canadian. No way!
Yes
He was probably just lucky. No one who seriously buys into pseudoscience like NLP knows anything I don't.
The alternative being he doesn't buy into that and is just being a manipulative and somewhat lucky asshole.
Well I have used NLP/mantras on myself. When I want to change my internal wiring. It works.
How about chants at rallies?
Why do businesses advertise?
"Well I have used NLP/mantras on myself. When I want to change my internal wiring. It works."
The jokes just about write themselves here.
I'm sure when you want to 'change your internal wiring' it takes as much effort as changing the wiring of a toaster. For obvious reasons.
Mantras have been in wide use for thousands of years to program and meta program the biocomputer.
Why do you say it is ineffective? Why do advertisers use the technique? Because it doesn't work?
"Have it your way"
See below. Mantras are affirmation that is effective on simpletons.
If you're saying self-affirmation works, then sure. But what you think is happening in your brain (or what NLP is telling you is happening) isn't.
Read "Programming and Meta Programming the Human Biocomputer" by Lily.
You change the brain computer by rearranging the action potential. But OK.
"Have it your way"

That's not NLP, which refers to a particular framework by Bandler and Grinder. They would eventually split over disagreements over who owned the copyright to it. If you want to expand the term to include any meditative practice, then the term is meaningless.
Well I am speaking to the method. Repeating a phrase or slogan to change behavior.
Mantras fit that description.
In fact all the religions use it to program the brains of their adherents. With the usual results. "People believe in impossibilities"
Trump !
For the LULZ
Every thing I know about NLP I learned from Maxwell Maltz.
Thank You Maxwell Maltz!
If merely repeating a phrase over and over were all there was to it, we'd all be fit, charismatic, and confident. I recommend you read Kegan and Lahey's Immunity to Change, which, like NLP, draws upon Korzybski, is more grounded in cognitive science's understanding of mental schemata.
HM,
In my experience people in general do not have the discipline to reprogram themselves. You see this in the "never trust anyone over 30". Endocannabinoid production declines after about age 25. By 30 you are stuck with what ever you have.
The discipline requires fighting all your ingrained habits.
You have to have an ad repeated continually for six months to a year to have an effect. Most people do not have six months of discipline against habits available. So people get a "guru" or join a religious community.
"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it." - Max Planck
It not a matter of discipline; it's a matter that the modularity of the brain allows for it to be at odds with itself.
You have to be very disciplined to resolve the brain "at odds with itself".
That's the point. All current evidence from neuroscience suggests that there is no singular "you" to impose any sort of discipline.
He was being written off by the GOP establishment, a group not known for their outstanding intelligence or commitment to reality. The betting odds have always had Trump as the leading candidate.
This guy in a white robe was also a wizard who tried to influence politics.
Sorry, I mean this guy.
Do all wizards look the same to you? Omg racist
Is there no limit on how many times you recycle the same story?
At least they scrubbed the comments this time.
I left this comment:
I LOVE the anti-Trump protesters. They are one of the best recruiting tools The Donald has.
Doesn't anyone remember Nixon in '68? Well never mind. And forget I said anything.
Here Daily Mail
Again: Trump will not be president. Ever. If you think otherwise you are fundamentally detached from reality. Everyone knows of this guy and the vast majority hate him. His numbers are radioactive. His appeal is too a small angry minority that represents an America of the past that is literally dying off.
Well that was true of the Republican party in August of 2015. Since then Trump keeps adding to his numbers. Attracting Democrats to the R party to vote for Trump. Why are you so sure he can't repeat the "trick" on the general electorate?
"Since then Trump keeps adding to his numbers. "
No he didn't. He quickly climbed up and has rarely gotten above 35%, where he plateaued and benefited from a fractured opposition. Similarly, his radioactive negative numbers climbed up and have stayed there.
"Why are you so sure he can't repeat the "trick" on the general electorate?"
The numbers, and the fact that generals are not the same as primary elections.
What is it like to live in a parallel reality? Were you dropped as a child or is this more of a congenital thing?
He is "winning" by higher numbers lately.
Polling in New York has him at 65%.
Hillary's favorables are down. Her unfavorables are up. But OK.
"Have it your way."
I don't know where you're pulling this out of but I have a feeling your proctologist was involved. Polls show Hillary would clobber Trump in NY.
Polls showed Hillary would clobber Bernie in Michigan, by like 20%, but he won.
Canucks for Cruz
I think we could shorten that to Cucks for Cruz.
Kerry won the election in 2004:

When you have people literally rioting in the street to stop Trump's "hate" rallies, then you know things have gone a bit too far for Trump to ever ressurrect his image to the point that he will win majority support.
A large fraction of the country is convinced he's the modern equivalent of Hitler.
You're saying that's still electable? Really?
Maybe the people who think he's Hitler are delusional, but an honest assessment MUST account for how that's going to play out. The D's aren't exactly going to disabuse the Trump=Hitler movement of their perceptions.
If he was literally President of the USA right now, and this many people thought he was Hitler, he would be forced to resign. He couldn't possibly even govern under these conditions. There would be rioting in major US cities, possibly violent insurrections. There would be blood in the streets the day he took office.
The rioting in the streets will increase his appeal. Look what it did for Nixon in '68.
So? Who gives a fuck? If rioting in the streets made Nazis more popular, does that mean it would be wrong to be against Nazis?
There would be blood in the streets the day he took office.
That would be a violation of the NAP.
Not given Trumps stated intention to violate the human rights of millions of people.
Trump wants to round up and deport people. Which means door to door raids in ethnic neighborhoods all over the country.
I don't know about all the master wizard stuff, but I've watched a few Trump rally videos as well as the debates, and the thought did occur to me that he studied hypnosis and NLP techniques. He has a talent for drawing in and focusing the listener and centering his message. It was, or maybe still is, common for attorneys, salesmen and other professionals to take conversational hypnosis courses to enhance their public speaking and skills of persuasion.
The use of simple words and phrases might come from these techniques or it might just be a natural instinct he has for knowing his audience and being able to tailor his delivery to suit the crowd.
Everytime I see Trump, I get an uncontrollable urge to chortle. Is that the same as being hypnotized?
It's definitely evidence that he was able to communicate his message to you.
If Free Trade means lost jobs, then is Mexico losing a lot of manufacturing jobs? Mexico has more free trade agreements in place than the U.S.
Free trade only matters when it's WHITE jobs being lost.
WHITE job
The whitest job in America is Veterinarians.

Trump is not a master wizard. It's not hard to get a million loud-mouthed jerks to like you: all you have to do is be willing to say whatever jerky thing comes into your head. He's no different than a million other loud-mouthed, racist jackasses with no self-control, with one big exception: he was born into a family with a dumptruck full of money. Everything else is just self-promotion: the $10B fortune which is probably closer to $300M, and the business savvy, which doesn't seem so savvy when realize he actually hasn't actually made much more money than he inherited.

Think? (Like bad voters?)
He nicknamed himself Scoop. The rest of us went along with it because of the irony. The coach obviously didn't get it.
"Or in politics?"
I think his last name is "Adams".
Better. He's a fucking lawyer.
I doubt it was a fully conscious effort on his part. I've been amazed many times by how "clever" and "manipulative" some very dumb people can be. It's just their natural unconscious actions being reacted to by equally dumb and gullible people.
Trump is inside of you, dude. The sooner you come to terms with it, the better off you'll be.
Bingo.
Nice, very helpful. He peed on the rug so I told him he was going to make America crate again, and he hasn't done it since.
Tell me his first name isn't Saul.
Booooooooooooo
You loved it!
Jimmy.
The most important thing for the base is charred onions and ginger. Cut an onion in half, put it on the burner, and leave it there until it is BLACK. Same with a 2 inch piece of ginger root. Seriously, try to burn it. You'll recognize the smell as soon as it goes into the broth.
The rest of the base is just salt, sugar, and MSG, and beef bones. Don't skimp on the MSG. The local vietnamese market sells the base in dehydrated cubes, but I like to make my own in a slightly different ratio.
For the flavoring, I use Pho spice bags that contain (I think) cardamom, cinnamon, anise, and a few other things. I get them off of amazon. You're gonna get all you can out of them after 20 minutes, so don't add them until the very end or the bags will rupture.
