The Sad, Embarrassing Spectacle of Chris Christie's Donald Trump Endorsement
Let this be a lesson for others looking to back Trump.

Chris Christie dropped out of the presidential race weeks ago, but he still managed to be Super Tuesday's biggest loser—thanks to Donald Trump.
It's been a rough couple of days for the New Jersey governor. After endorsing Trump for president last week in an embarrassing spectacle of a press conference, Christie went on to defend his decision to George Stephanopoulos on ABC.
The interview was even more of an embarrassment than the press conference. Stephanopoulos pointed out that Christie and Trump share almost no common goals by playing Chris Christie's own words back to him—on the infeasibility of building a border wall, on Trump's disinterest in reforming entitlements, on banning Muslims from entering the United States—and then asking Christie to explain how his positions aligned with Trump.
Christie had no good answer to any of these questions, because no good answer was possible. All he could say was that he and Trump don't agree on every issue, and that he's endorsing him anyway. But Stephanopoulos made it look practically like he and Trump don't agree on any issue. Christie was left struggling to defend his endorsement using only vague generalities. Trump is the strongest, the best, the only one who can make America great again, blah blah blah, winning, whatever.
There was something else about the interview, too—a strange air of submission. While running for president, Christie, who has known Trump for well over a decade, consistently called Trump, by his first name, Donald. But in the interview, he referred to him exclusively as "Mr. Trump," as if he were a flunky in The Trump Organization.
In endorsing Trump, Christie had been made to look both ridiculous and untrustworthy. And Christie's presidential backers, as well as residents of his home state, noticed.
On Tuesday, New Hampshire Union Leader publisher Joseph McQuaid, who endorsed Christie in the GOP race, issued a scathing follow-up: "Boy, were we wrong," the piece declared. "Watching Christie kiss the Donald's ring this weekend—and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency—demonstrated how wrong we were." Later that day, six New Jersey papers called on Christie to resign, saying, "We're fed up with his opportunism. We're fed up with his hypocrisy." And new polling suggests that Christie's endorsement of Trump is hurting his reputation with residents of New Jersey.
Which brings us to last night. Christie introduced Trump before his victory celebration in Florida, and then the governor stood silently behind Trump while the candidate rambled on and answered questions. As he stood there, staring silently into the distance, clapping occasionally (but not enthusiastically), Christie looked trapped and terrified, anxious and confused, like a panicked hostage desperate to escape his captor. The power balance between the two men was clear: Christie, the vicious political attack dog, had somehow been tamed into a subservient house-pet.
There was something more than a bit pathetic about the sad, absurd little scene (replay the whole event in all its non-glory via C-SPAN). It was almost enough to make me feel sorry for Christie. Almost, but not quite. Christie chose to endorse Trump, chose to stand by him, chose to put himself in a position where he would have to defend Trump's various offenses and positions, reconcile them with his own statements, and look ridiculous in the process. He chose to be dominated by Trump.
But Christie's experience should serve as a lesson for others tempted to follow in his footsteps. Attempts to defend an embarrassment like Trump will only lead to embarrassment for his defenders; they will be enabling his campaign, but not themselves.

You know who else has been made to look both ridiculous and untrustworthy?
Richard Millhouse Nixon?
"Milhous" dammit.
Everything's coming up Milhouse!
Milhouse is not a meme!
Shikha Dalmia?
Tonio? 😉
Ha! Brilliant.

Christie's just hoping to be tapped for The Donald's Veep slot*. Or at least a cabinet position. Probably A.G. so he can shut down those dirty pot smokers in CO and other states that have legalized it. *shudders*
*And yes, I meant that to sound as dirty as your degenerate reasonoid minds can fathom.
I believe the consensus here is AG.
Secretary of Steak.
I laughed. Interesting to see the reasoning behind his 180, though.
For a minute there I thought you said seasoning
Of course he's going for attorney general. No one else was going to offer it to him, and I doubt Trump gives a fuck who fills that spot in his cabinet.
...I meant that to sound as dirty as your degenerate reasonoid minds can fathom.
I dunno. I can fathom quite a bit, IYKWIM(AITTYD), winkwinknudgenudgesaynomore!
Loki,
Yes, Christie the Prosecutor/tough guy Guv might be angling specifically for the Attorney Gen slot. Regardless of a possible desire to screw with the nations pot heads, he's one of that long standing class of ambitious folks who want to climb high. To join the winning team isn't some scurrilous act of a scoundrel, just the normal act of one having lost a contest to join with the winner. Bush, the opponent who came up with the insult "voodoo economics" to refer to Reaganomics became Reagans loyal right hand VP, and dutiful one term "third term for Reagan" President.
Is that Christies ambition? Sure, could be. Point is, he's neither a prostitute, nor a fool, nor suffering - not necessarily. He could just be a man solidifying his place as one of Trumps supporting allies. Trump isn't going to intentionally humiliate Christie; that would decrease his value as an ally, and Trump understands that idea, I'm sure.
And if he's smart, Trump'll listen some good input from Christie. Particularly on his "think I'll go nuts on Twitter going to war with (anyone of any age, gender or social position); he/she/they started it" policy.
Where have I seen that pic before?

Perfect.
Great, now my co-workers are beginning to stare, wondering why I'm laughing so hard.
Nice one.
*thunderous applause*

HA! You've been outed. If you were really a girl, you would CURTSY!!
I would love to click the link, but this is a crowded office and I have no idea what would pop up... But I'll look at home tonight.
D'oh!
That's fantastic. I also keep hearing "I've made a huge mistake" from Arrested Development
I realize he probably looks closer than he actually was, but I wouldn't put my fingers that close to Christie's mouth.
The Donald was just giving a skin scratch and a biscuit.
"There you go, who's a good boy!"
If you think he's big now... you should have seen him when he was running for Governor. He was an opportunist then. At a local town hall, he was working the room like a salesman, shaking hands, "I'm running for governor!". I'd have told him to "Bite me!", but I was afraid he would.
Kudos for including that hilarious vine.
When will Tony the Tiger endorse the Trumpster?
Inquiring minds want to know!
So Christie turns out to be a bottom...
This is just begging for a SF slashfic. Paging SugarFree, SugarFree to the white courtesy phone please...
Jeez, give me a minute.
I wait with a combination of fear, disgust, and arousal...
It would be really hard for Christie to be a bottom since it would take 3 months of spelunking to find his anus amid all the confounding cracks and crevices concealing his nether regions.
Plus, he's probably going to be really disappointed. From what Rubio has implied, The Donald's got a pretty small cock.
Which makes me wonder, how does Rubio know?
It's probably a safe assumption. What kind of cock would you assume him to have, if you had to choose? I bet he has piss-on-balls syndrome.
I was going to add some comment but Loki and Rich have really said it all, other than that this is a Reason article with which I completely agree. Usually I find something to nitpick, but this time they are right on the money. Christie deserves worse, but this will do.
But Christie's experience should serve as a lesson for others tempted to follow in his footsteps. Attempts to defend an embarrassment like Trump will only lead to embarrassment for his defenders; they will be enabling his campaign, but not themselves.
Oh, Peter. It's cute when you pretend politics isn't solely about power and self-aggrandisement.
Agreed. Politically, Christie has essentially just gone all-in on Trump. This will be an embarrassment to Christie if Trump loses, but right now, there is very good chance that this pathetic toady will be our next attorney general
That thought should be terrifying to any libertarian. He'd be the worst AG of all time, by far. He'd make Janet Reno and John Ashcroft look good.
It's actually rather troubling to see so few people willing to stand up to Trump. The political class is pathetic.
Most of the political class is opposing Trump. They are still pathetic, of course.
There are three kinds of people in this world: dicks, pussies, and assholes.
Christie tried being a dick, but had to settle for pussy to go along with Trump's asshole.
I flipped to the local conservative talk radio show on AM this morning, and I don't know what the station's editorial opinion is on Trump, but they were remarking about how Trump didn't have a great super-tuesday, despite all the media reports. The host said Trump not only didn't have a great super-tuesday, but didn't have a 'very good' tuesday. That his lead fell way below projections. Thoughts?
That is the new talking point Paul. All of my life I have seen both major parties try to shorter the primary season as much as possible. I have seen one nominee after another anointed as the pick and everyone else told to quit for the good of the party after winning just a few primaries.
Now Trump comes in and wipes the floor all the way through Super Tuesday and these people are all about how it is not really over yet. My favorite spin is when they say that sixty whatever percentage of the votes were "against Trump" as if none of those people would vote for Trump if their guy dropped out. These people really do think the voters are retarded. The voters may not be geniuses but they are not that stupid.
What do you make of the fact that Trump has lost every state that has closed primaries, except the NV caucus? I think it's too early to draw any conclusions, but my first take is that the Trump voters are by and large independents, conservative Democrats, and the non-political sort who feel put out by our superiors within the system. There are a lot of closed primaries coming up in the next two weeks. It will be interesting to see how those play out.
I know one thing for certain, if Jeb Bush or Chris Christie or Marco Rubio had done what Trump has, he would have been crowned the nominee yesterday and probably before yesterday.
It is not so much that it is not possible for Trump to lose. It is that no way in hell would these hacks be clinging to that chance if it were anyone but Trump.
What do you make of the fact that Trump has lost every state that has closed primaries,
Is that true? Hmm...............
I think it is Paul, but it is not like he has gotten crushed in the closed primaries. Beyond that, he is winning the open primaries because he is bringing in a bunch of new voters to the party, which is something that the party would love if it were anyone but Trump doing it.
Think about it. We have reached the point where parties leaders are saying a candidate is unfit to be the nominee because he is relying too much on new voters to win the nomination. What the hell is this the Libertarian Party now?
Or he is bringing in a bunch Dems looking to be shit disturbers for the republicans since their nominee was annointed 4 years ago.
Which is why I never understood the parties accepting any state going "open" primary.
OK the demoncraps would go along because it would be their dishonest voters who would do that kind of thing.
The RNC should have followed through on declaring the delegates from open primary states, as not having voting privileges at the convention, and only crossovers from a year prior to the primary as allowed to vote.
When was the last time a candidate was nominated receiving only 34% of the cumulative popular vote in the primaries?
It's not a talking point, it's real. Trump does not have the broad base of support that a nominee typically has.
When is the last time the party didn't pressure the losers out of the race to get the presumptive nominee over the top? Never.
If it really were true that the majority of the party didn't want Trump, the party would bribe off Kasich, Carson and either Rubio or Cruz and make it a one on one contest and end the thing. They haven't done that because ti is not true. They know Trump would win a two way race. So they are doing the opposite and keeping the vote split as much as possible in hopes of getting a brokered convention where they can fuck Trump.
You don't have to be a Trump supporter to see what lying sacks of shit these people are. And hating Trump is no excuse for lying. These people are lying scum.
Lying in politics?
I'm shocked.
I've seen that thought elsewhere. The prevailing wisdom was that he'd win everywhere but Texas, and he lost 4 states and 3 others were within 3% or so. So he did well, but not quite as well as the MSM is trying to portray.
They also said he would love Virginia and that would prove that he couldn't win nation wide. That talking point got thrown down the memory hole.
Well, Virginia is for lovers.
(Hadn't really seen anyone predict a Trump loss in VA)
Citation very much needed. Unless you're referring to what Rubio's campaign floated yesterday afternoon.
That is what I am referring to and what seemed to be the conventional wisdom over at NRO. And frankly, I figured Rubio would win Virginia. So much for that.
Yeah, literally no one actually thought that yesterday.
Really? They seemed to. I don't see why they were lying.
As someone who voted for Rubio in Virginia yesterday (purely out of anti-Donald spite), I can say that I certainly didn't expect Rubio to win. I figured a close second was his best realistic shot, and that is about what he got.
I'm pro Trump - out of spite. And for the entertainment value.
I haven't looked today, but last night CNN was intent on killing Rubio's campaign because he had almost won a bunch of states people expected him to get shellacked in.
He significantly underperformed pre-election polling; that is a fact. I don't know anyone who thought Trump would lose any state last night but TX, and he lost four others. And his delegate count is not what was projected either.
That his lead fell way below projections.
So, not covering the spread means you don't get the win?
"The winner didn't meet expectations" is what losers say when they lose.
That's very nearly what the argument was on the radio. I believe the real implication is (of course) that Trump's nomination is far from being in the bag.
"Now say 'You will endorse me!'" the hat whispered.
"You will endorse me!" Donald said.
"Now hit him with the chair leg again," the hat said. He made his adjustable strap caress the back of Donald's head lovingly.
Donald swung the chair leg and caught Christopher on the right side, below the ribs. Pain burst in his body like fireworks shoved in a cake.
"You like that, fat boy? You like that, Mr. Chunky Monkey?" Donald yelled hoarsely.
"Mr. Chunky Monkey?" the hair asked.
"I don't know," the hat said. "He just comes up with shit like that sometimes."
"You want a banana?" Donald asked, prodding Christopher's bleeding anus with the ragged end of the chair leg. "You want a fucking plantain? I can get a plantain, you know!"
"Slow down there, buddy," the hair told Donald. "Maybe take a minute."
"You pie-eating piece of shit! Endorse me! ENDORSE ME! I'm going to be your fucking President, burrito buffet! I CAN DO ANYTHING!" Donald began kicking Christopher in the perineum, wing-tips buried into taint over and over again.
"Donald! Stop!" the hat pleaded.
"Donald! Don't kill him!" the hair begged.
"BRING ME DISCO FRIES!" the candidate screamed.
Christie is a power bottom if there ever was one. He was just waiting for the right top.
You'll notice he doesn't make a sound as the Donald goes at him.
Probably just took it all with same bewildered "has it really come to this" look on his face as he had last night at The Donald's press conference.
True. It may be that he is broken.
Pain burst in his body like fireworks shoved in a cake.
Beautiful and depraved. Poetic. You are a treasure to the English language.
That was everything I simultaneously hoped and feared it would be.
#FEELTHEHAIR
Rubio and Kasich staying in the race will guarantee a Trump win. I wonder if the fix is in - they both stay in until it's way too late for Cruz, then endorse Trump and beg for Cabinet jobs too.
I don't think so. I think everyone needs to stay in now to deny Trump the magic 1,237 delegates.
Then they all go to the convention and commit political suicide together. Is it in Jonestown this year?
Trump's got a bit more than 300 delegates at this point. There are about 900 delegates left in winner-take-all states. Most if not all of those, Trump's leading in polling. He'll get 1237, pretty much damned what anyone else does, unless either Cruz or Rubio/Kasich drop out, and their opponent claims those winner take all states.
He won't get 8 states with 50% of the vote though, and thus we come to a convention without an outright winner. Which is what Rubio is hoping for. Kasich, I think, is hoping for a VP slot in either a Rubio, Trump, or hell, even Cruz Administration. God only knows what that somnolent schmuck Carson is looking for. (I'm a bit bitter because I think he siphoned away some of Cruz's votes, while he had zero chance of winning it all himself since about December, but w/e.)
I'm with what you wrote in an earlier thread today, that Cruz might beat Trump head to head, and that if the GOPe really hated Trump above all else, pull out Rubio and Kasich and see if Cruz can beat him. They won't do that, of course, because they hate Cruz even more.
It's an interesting question if you run the GOP. If you want to win in November, I think you need Trump's new voters. Will they vote for Cruz or Rubio if either man beats Trump heads up before the Convention? I dunno. Does the GOPe officialdom gain more by running Rubio, alienating voters, and losing in November, than they do if Trump wins, but guts their positions? Seems like I've answered that.
*He won't get 8 states with 50% of the vote though*
It's not 50% of the vote, it's 50% of the DELEGATES from 8 states.
He has already done this in 4 states.
Thank you, you were right, I was misinformed.
Silly rule to have with all of the winner-take-all states on the slate. Probably why I thought the rule went according to my mistaken interpretation.
I can't see Trump not getting a majority of the delegates before the convention then, even with either Cruz or Rubio/Kasich getting out.
So, Christie basically was Trump's Ned Beatty.
Be honest Bill, if Trump got up and made Christie squeal like a pig, wouldn't you jump on the Trump bandwagon?
"Christie looked trapped and terrified, anxious and confused."
The press is making too much of this. His blood sugar was probably just low because he had not consumed a large meal in over 30 minutes.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer sack of shit.
Hopefully Trump breaks the lot of them and has them all follow him around like his trained gimps.
The Huns were known to make concubines of their vanquished foes.
"Holy shit he really is a Nazi. And I'm standing right behind him. Holy shit."

For those of you interested, there's a Chrome extension that turns "Chris Christie" into "Reek." Highly recommended.
I'm sure like a good lapdog Christie will get a position with a fancy title.

Trump 2016 ! for the entertainment value.
When I saw Cris Cristy on stage, on TV, supporting Trump it rang a bell . . . Christy has no political values; he would just as soon support Hillary or Bernie if it assured his government job. Christy is a bureaucrat, not a politician or idealist. Trump made him a deal he couldn't refuse.
Moreover, the fact that Donald Trump recognized Christy's character flaw impresses me somewhat; but that will change on the day Trump hands Christy the appointment he was promised. It will reveal Trump's own character flaw.
Just a political opportunist vying for his shot at a vice-presidency.
