Jeb Bush Is Dropping Out of the GOP Race. Here's Why I'll Miss His Campaign.
With Trump in the race, the former Florida governor couldn't compete.

There were more than a few reasons for a libertarian (or, okay, anyone) to dislike Jeb Bush: his consistent support for his brother George W. Bush's administration, his aggressive backing of awful government surveillance programs, his general air of hawkishness, and the easy, entitled comfort with which he slipped into his place as the early favorite of the Republican party establishment. Jeb Bush and his supporters stood for continuity with the GOP under his brother, and all that was wrong with it.
As the race started, I was prepared to dislike him intensely—and yet I somehow developed a soft spot for him, a kind of sympathy, and a respect for the campaign he ran.
Much of that respect stemmed from the fact that, at least early on, Jeb Bush was clearly trying to run a campaign based on policy proposals. Like every Republican, he put out an absurd tax plan based on a fantasy of how cutting taxes works, but he also outlined plans to reform the regulatory state, to overhaul the entitlement system, and a set of ideas on how to reform government hiring and contracting processes, and restrain spending—along with a number of other proposals. Some of these ideas were stronger than others, but they were honest, earnest ideas about how to govern and make policy.
Jeb Bush wanted to be president. But he didn't seem to want to run for president. His initial campaign strategy was described, more than a little unfortunately, as "shock and awe"—the idea was that he would win in a walk after a show of power.
As in Iraq, that strategy didn't exactly work out, in part because of the breadth of the GOP field, and in part because of the entrance of Donald Trump. Trump seemed to delight in attacking Bush, in bullying his wonkier, more thoughtful competitor, and for most of the race, Bush struggled to respond effectively. Partly that was because Bush didn't have the killer instinct attacking Trump required, and partly because Bush seemed to regard Trump as a joke candidate who didn't need to be dignified with engagement. That was a mistake, but it was a telling one—and one that, to me at least, helped humanize Bush.
Bush didn't want to stoop to Trump's level, didn't want to play Trump's game, and, fundamentally, didn't really want to engage in the awful, ridiculous business of campaigning for president. Some of that was an undeserved sense of entitlement, but some of that, I think, was an abiding sense that the campaign circus was silly and undignified, a vulgar reality show contest. And Bush never really wanted to play the game. That Bush so obviously didn't relish the daily campaign fights, that he clearly didn't enjoy the stupidity and spectacle, was a big part of what I appreciated about him.
It's true, of course, that if Bush had been the frontrunner, and won the race in a walk as he initially hoped, I probably would have liked him less. His ineffectiveness made it easier to like him, because the bad parts of his campaign never really represented a threat. And yet I also have to admit that the campaign that Jeb Bush would have preferred is one that, after watching the Trump show for the last several months, I would have preferred too—a contest of issues and ideas and more or less honest arguments about policy and governance. Maybe Bush would have lost that contest too, ultimately, but it's one that would have served the country, and the Republican party, better.
Bush announced tonight that he is suspending his campaign. At this point, I'm not that sorry to see him go. But I will miss the smarter, calmer, less spectacular race that, in its best moments, his campaign seemed to represent.

He probably would've been the better of the three Bush Presidents.
That ain't saying much.
The Heir of Hawkishness.
I'm glad he's gone. But yeah, compared to the current frontrunners, we could have done worse.
Now, if we can get everybody else, from both parties, to quit, we can start all over and maybe find somebody worth electing.
someone worth electing has no interest in the job.
Yeah, I'm too busy to fuck around with these campaign things.
But, you're the perfect candidate! You can get Snuffleufflegus to join the ticket as VP.
Make America Stink Again!
My campaign slogan: I live in a trash can, but I'm better than you!
I would say Gary Johnson would be worth electing. Too bad it won't happen.
^ This. Someone who sees it more as a duty than a way to grab power for themselves and/or their party.
There went the death sentence for pot, the flag-desecration amendment, the bomber strikes on Planned Parenthood and the ramping up of asset-forfeiture to nationalize every home in Amerikkka. Damn!
We'll always have him pinning a medal on Hillary's sisterly bosom.
George got the charisma, Jeb got the brains. Guesses which was more useful in running for president.
Yeah there is a lot to dislike about Jeb. But there is a lot to dislike about any candidate. Yes, even Rand Paul. In some ways I preferred Jeb to Rand; at least he wasn't arguing about some ridiculous plan to throw out birthright citizenship.
No he was too busy running on a pro-nsa, pro-stasi style domestic surveillance. Yes Rand was flawed but to lump him in with Jeb is a bit like lumping in Jeffrey Dahlmer and people who eat too many twinkies as both having diet issues.

Let's hope that the Bush Dynasty is over and done with for the remaining history of mankind.
Thanks be to God.
If only it could have been finished after the first term of H. Bush.
George P. looms in Texas. If the stars align, he could run against Senator Chelsea in 2028.
"Bush didn't want to stoop to Trump's level, didn't want to play Trump's game, and, fundamentally, didn't really want to engage in the awful, ridiculous business of campaigning for president."
I seem to recall Rand Paul responding to some question regarding his campaign with a comment along the lines of 'you think I'd waste my time doing this sort of crap if I weren't still in the race?'.
Trump, OTOH, is a reality-show veteran and knows they'll hold the "CLAP!" sign up at the appropriate time.
Jeb Bush wanted to be president. But he didn't seem to want to run for president.
So, total opposite of Obama.
...huh?
Fore!
I went into the campaign season liking Bush the least, and ended at this point liking him the most.
Yes, I disagreed with him on quite a bit, but after the truly insane circus of the last few months, Bush ended up looking and sounding more appealing than I ever thought he would. I think he's a good guy, but clearly this is not his time.
I hope he endorses Rubio, and I hope Rubio wins and finds a place for him in the administration.
The budget needs more compassionate conservatism like it needs a hole in the head.
Hopefully this will be the end of that family's overt influence on the GOP going forward. Their hybrid of Rockefeller Republicanism and belligerent hawkishness is a large reason that Trump even gained the support that he did. I suspect if Jeb had stayed out of it, it would be Rubio and Cruz battling it out for the nomination, not looking for Trump's delegate table scraps.
And maybe the Clinton's influenza will be ended as well. But with her super delegate count that's not likely.
Barring an indictment of course.
It's coming. Why else would Biden be in public more in the last three weeks than the previous six years combined?
Dear Jesus, I promise that I will live a good and holy life forever and ever if you would see fit to have Hillary indicted. I will never complain about anything ever again, I'll eat all my vegetables, and I'll even try to read the entire Bible from beginning to end. Please just let this happen. Amen.
Eat all your vegetables? There's a Terry Schiavo string downthread.
You are making an assumption that doesn't necessarily fit. You are assuming that if Princess Felony is indicted, she'll stop running for President. I'm not certain that would be the case.
I think they are going to have to drag her from the stage kicking and screaming (I would even promise to live a good and holy life forever and ever if I could see THAT).
There will NOT be a Hillary indictment. Obama doesn't want his miserable legacy to include taking out the first probable woman president of his own party. It'll never happen.
Besides that, Hillary is a shoe-in. The GOP is so splintered they haven't got a chance of winning the presidency.
Obama doesn't want his miserable legacy to include taking out the first probable woman president of his own party. It'll never happen.
But . . . fait accompli. He already did it.
Perhaps he has other wants for his miserable legacy, such as not being buried by the family that hates him.
Um, Trump is Rockefeller Republicanism and belligerent hawkishness on acid and turned up to eleven.
His rise is owed almost entirely to the relentless ratchet of progressivism crushing everyone its way, and the utter failure of the GOP to stop it.
Progressives have stopped even pretending that they care about opinions contrary to their own, and have gone full Orwell. The mask is off, and suddenly a whole lot of people just realized that most of the levers of power in this country are in the hands of authoritarians looking to crush all dissent, and do so in the name of progress and tolerance.
Trump is a panic reaction to this realization.
I have only run into 2 people who are supporting Trump because of his ideology. I've talked with 25 or 30 who are supporting him because 1) He doesn't back down from the media; and 2) he's not a career politician.
"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." - Mencken
Beautifully put.
Trump's support comes down to one thing--working-class GOP voters and Reagan Democrat types who despise the people in charge of the party and the media in general, and want to humiliate them in the most overt way possible.
So 75% of the electorate over the age of 50?
Btavo!
Bravo, I meant to spell
Charles Murray's take over at WSJ was pretty good, and why, with only a couple of twists, you get the similar rise of Bernie for the Dems.
Trump is Rockefeller Republicanism and belligerent hawkishness on acid and turned up to eleven.
Trump doesn't have a consistent enough ideology to pigeonhole him like that. He's about getting max media exposure, not selling anything like a consistent vision of what his Presidency will be like.
Here's a cocktail shaker. Shake it.
I somehow developed a soft spot for him, a kind of sympathy, and a respect for the campaign he ran.
Somehow? How could you not, Peter?

Well I'm relieved! I was afraid that if he actually did make it to the White House, we would see another epidemic of young women shaving their nether regions again (as in the No Bush! protest).

I just heard his SC victory speech - he's going to have successful American businesspeople - not political hacks - negotiate with China and other countries on trade, so those countries will stop ripping us off.
USA! USA!
Again, he's the can-do, pragmatic middle-of-the-roader the media pines for. Or claims to pine for.
But for me, ideology is starting to look pretty good.
We are so fucked.
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
Still less fucked than under Hillary or Bernie...
8"...12"...either way, proctologists are gonna be happy.
We're gonna be gang-raped, but at least this bunch is wearing condoms.
Nope. Hillary won't start WW3 or a new Great Depression. Trump might.
Trump is a saner Perot.
Get the corrupt and incompetent hacks out of there, and Donald and his people will work on common-sense solutions to our problems.
And don't forget straight talk. Lots of it.
It's that sort of demographic he's appealing to, but Trump is no Perot.
Trump doesn't have a plan, and he won't have a plan.
Trump's plan is to be on TV a lot.
So Perot is J, Michael Stravinsky and Trump is Ronald Moore?
Like a fucking trade war with China? That kind of "common sense" solutions? We are so fucked.
The only reason people don't admit it's common sense is they've been bought off by the China Lobby.
/sarc
Or else they just don't want to Win.
Trump might want a trade war with China but Beenie actually has a repeal of NAFTA, CAFTA and TPP in his platform.
Bernie has no chance of getting the nomination after today. Hillary is gonna destroy him in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday.
And if she's indicted?
"There's a special place in hell for anyone who would indict the presumptive first woman president."
She's not going to be indicted.
It's like how Trump said he could shoot someone and it wouldn't hurt his popularity. She could shoot someone on live TV and not get indicted.
Someone (not me) could shoot Hilary in the face and they'd still put her on the ballot. So yea, she's not going anywhere.
Too bad the DemoGOP has outlawed betting. I could have retired comfortably by finding suckers with money who believe cops who shoot people in the back will be indicted or convicted. Gambling guaranteed a steady flow of money away from the superstitious into the hands of those who understand basic arithmetic. Today that same money flows to looter politicians and televangelists.
He doesn't, but he's dragged her too far to the left for her to turn back in the general.
Like anything she says during her campaign will have any bearing on her actions after being elected?
No, but she has serious credibility issues. She can't flip flop that much from the primary to the general and keep her base intact.
I mean, a uterus will only get her so far. She's got to keep her prog Bona-fides if she wants a decent turnout. And those won't win her the presidency. No fucking way. She's pigeonholed herself, and now she's fucked.
Maybe, but I think most people who vote think they have to vote for an R or D and would never vote for an R or maybe never vote for Trump.
So 8" versus 12"?
Just like spring break in Jamaica.

OT: I understand the basic concept of negative interest rates, but it seems like a theoretical thing that probably would not work in the real world. Is there anyone here who knows more economics than I do give me their opinion? Could that actually happen, and actually work? Some people think the proposed removal of large denomination bills is a pre-emptive measure in preparation of negative interest rates, to make it harder for people to hoard large amounts of cash.
You could think of a negative interest rate as paying your bank to keep your money secured from the robbers, house fires and weevils who pose risks to keeping it at home.
"OT: I understand the basic concept of negative interest rates, but it seems like a theoretical thing that probably would not work in the real world"
Disregarding paying for protection as Homple mentions, interest is presumed to be a reflection of the 'time value' of money; you'd rather buy that house now, and pay off the note (with interest) in the future, compared to saving for it and buying it in cash in the future. I can't see that preference changing, absent a strong and long-term deflation of the world economy.
I doubt a (declared) negative rate will be offered on consumer loans, regardless of the possible actual negative rates; no bank is going to pay you to take money for a mortgage (which is presumed to be the most secure form of consumer lending).
So it'll continue to be the equivalent of 'one weird trick' between central and commercial banks in an effort to manage the economy for political gain.
I also don't think it has anything to do with any change in the denomination of the available currency.
BTW, the US has been running a program of negative interest since '09; Bernanke instituted a program whereby the taxpayer pays banks to maintain a balance of money 'loaned' to them from the Fed.
We (you and me) pay banks to hold our money in what is called their 'reserve' in order to keep them from falling below the reserve requirements of the Fed.
Aren't you generous!
Besides time value of money, the interest rate depends partly on a premium to cover the possibility of not getting paid back, which is a reason negative interest rates will never apply to consumer loans. While I might pay a little to the bank to guard my money because it's more secure there than in my mattress, the bank has to charge me mortgage interest to cover my possible default.
True; I didn't mention the cost of risk.
also, transaction costs
We've HAD real negative interest rates for some time in the recent past.
There are 'technical' negative interest rates (i.e. 'less than zero') - where depositors are charged for keeping money in any static account, and punish any institution that isn't putting all their assets out into the market. Loan rates would fall and in theory it would stimulate lots of economic activity.
But there are also de-facto negative real interest rates, which is basically when the cost of borrowing has been lower than inflation. When someone is charging you 1% and inflation is 1.5%, the loan you pay back is actually "less" than you borrowed. This is partly why the Fed has been desperate for there to be at least *modest* inflation (1-2%)...to prevent having to dip into the *actual* negative interest rate ('below zero') territory in order to be stimulative.
"But there are also de-facto negative real interest rates, which is basically when the cost of borrowing has been lower than inflation. When someone is charging you 1% and inflation is 1.5%, the loan you pay back is actually "less" than you borrowed."
Some of the TV auto ads offer "0% loans", and given an inflation rate higher than zero, they are actual 'negative rate' loans.
Of course, selling autos means the out-the-door price of the thing may include costs/fees/options that pay the lender interest through other means. Muzzies ain't the only ones who 'fiddle' interest rates...
"Some of the TV auto ads offer "0% loans", and given an inflation rate higher than zero, they are actual 'negative rate' loans."
I'd dispute the 'actual' part. as you note yourself - the lender is also the seller setting the price of the product. they just hide 'loan cost' in the nominal price. Auto loans are sort of not really the best case studies when talking about central-bank policies and their impact on "lending" writ large. as you noted, i think the most material impacts would be on mortgages or any other kind of securitized debt.
neither here nor there, but we have had minor spells of negative inflation in the recent past (q4 2014 & q1 2015).
I really don't trust the government measured CPI.
Because it's gamed
Old, but relevant link
"I really don't trust the government measured CPI."
Yes, and i feel your pain. everyone knows there are "real Real REALEST" shadow-stats out there. and they're interesting from the POV of macroeconomists and academics and end-of-the-world whackjobs,....
but in the actual business of finance.... at a certain point the 'gaming' of certain stats ceases to matter as long as everyone is using the same bullshit-numbers for their default cost-calculations and modeling. IOW, no one really cares what the 'real' numbers are, its just 'what numbers are going to be used to price X in the next few relevant periods"
"I'd dispute the 'actual' part. as you note yourself - the lender is also the seller setting the price of the product. they just hide 'loan cost' in the nominal price."
Next, you'll tell me the 'free shipping' from that home-accessory outfit really isn't free? Point taken.
Auto loans are sort of not really the best case studies when talking about central-bank policies and their impact on "lending" writ large. as you noted, i think the most material impacts would be on mortgages or any other kind of securitized debt.
I don't get it. Aren't auto loans secured by the underlying vehicle? At the very least purchase money auto loans are secured.
Sub-prime=negative rates.

It's like something good happens when people choose between a traditional family and a career. It's almost like, by not trying to do everything, they are more capable of being great at what they choose to do. And finally, it's almost like people (women) have been able to choose between family and career for a long, long time, but the feminists are just now figuring out that half-assing everything you do so that you can say you do everything isn't a great life.
Are you saying that, perhaps, everything has a cost? To gain something, we must give up something in return? That sounds corporashuny. Bernie will put a stop to those stupid laws of economics.

I always thought that it was "Work is inconvenient." Maybe that's just my opinion.
"Here's what I think is going on: this whole "having it all" business has been grossly misinterpreted by our society at large."
WHOA! Working 40 to 50 hours a week while juggling two or three kids is not a cakewalk? Holy shit! Stop the presses!
"Except actually, that's what happens to all but the very very rich when you encourage women to work and have children but don't change any other part of the world they live in."
When *I* encourage women to have children? I don't remember doing that. I think what she's referring to is that SOME PEOPLE hold the opinion that women should focus on raising children, and SOME OTHER PEOPLE think that being a stay-at-home mother is sexist and that women should put all their energy into their career. And perhaps SOME people hold both opinions simultaneously. Note that none of this holds any real sanction over women. The author even uses the word "encourage" to describe this alleged forcing of women into "doing it all". She has just stumbled across the fact of life that no matter what lifestyle you choose, there will be some people out there who accuse you of shirking your duties as a woman (or as a man). People holding a negative opinion of you is not the same thing as forcing you to do something else.
"I have routinely had women pass me over for work because I'm pregnant."
She apparently has the power to read minds and was able to ascertain exactly why she didn't get the job.
"Nor do I think that the world owes me an easy life, or that I should get to make choices with no trade-offs, or have all these things without working really damn hard for all of them."
... Yet, earlier in the article, she mocks the idea that government-paid maternity leave is a bad idea: "Without government-paid maternity leave (what are you, a socialist?)" She's trying to play the strong, independent woman who don't need no help while also ridiculing the notion that taxpayers shouldn't have to pay her for time that she is not at work.
"We need to make it truly okay for women to opt out of working, too. Not sort of okay, but behind your back everyone thinks you're wasting your potential, so then you feel like you have to parent the shit out of your kids and run yourself ragged taking them to activities and teaching them things."
What's happening here is that she has this idea that every single person MUST have a positive opinion of her. She's acting like peoples' opinions are laws of physics and that she has no choice but to obey them. Guess what, lady? You can live your life however you choose, but don't complain when your choice doesn't gain the approval of the entire country.
The comments are too derpy. Those will have to be dealt with by someone with far more derp-handling experience, training, and equipment.
I liked the piece peter, but i think the real story w/ Bush which has not yet been commented on...
(aside from the fact that he represented the "most establishment" of them all, and is therefore dead last)
... is THE MONEY.
He's spent almost as much as Hillary. And gotten NOTHING for it. He's run more television ads than the rest all put together.
The guy should be a case study in why everything progs say about campaign financing and how "Money controls politics" and how we need new drastic controls on political spending yadda yadda yadda and how the Koch brothers and their 900Million were going to undermine democracy.... EVERY PART OF THAT ARGUMENT IS BULLSHIT.
Instead, we're getting saddled with people like Sanders and Trump who are driven almost entirely by populist monkeys without a nickel of "KKKorporate Fundings" (*ok, fine, both have some money from various constituents, but the point should be that the ratio of "success per dollar" is completely reversed)
And yet i've seen almost Zero commentary on this fact.
Its like Peak Oil. Something people shit themselves purple over in the press as recently as a year or 2 ago, and yet when they prove to be 100% wrong? Everyone just pretends not to notice.
So you are calling for the repeal of Citizens United?

Stockholm Syndrome strikes another Reason writer.
This article is proof that watching teevee lowers a person's IQ. Next installment will be about... what? How Peter misses George Wallace and Richard Nixon?
No, they are both too hated by the media, think Bill Clinton, George Bush, Obama etc
I am not shitting my pants over Trump but am not a Trump supporter either. I do, however, owe a debt to Trump and his campaign for getting me to realize just how degraded and stupid the Conservative movement has become. I don't know what ideology I am these days because I have concluded that I am really not a "conservative" as it seems to mean today. I finally realized this last night when somehow a rant by some PJ Media guy named Michael Walsh about how if Trump wins the Republican nomination "conservatism is dead". Why is this the case? Because Trump might win the nomination and he has praised Planned Parenthood and the Obamacare mandate. I think abortion is evil and barbaric and the Obamacare mandate utterly idiotic and unconstitutional
I enjoy tweaking Libertarians about their hypocrisy and cultural biases on issues like abortion and gays. As fun as that is, however, when push comes to shove I honestly don't give a shit about any of it. The country is going broke, the entire Islamic world seems to have gone insane and is hell bent on terrorizing us into submission, half the working age population in this country is on some form of the dole, and millions of people seemed to have lost hope and faith in the future getting any better, millions of others are in prison either because they are depraved or there for "crimes" that at most hurt themselves and often not even then, and our justice system has become an evil machine eating and destroying lives with no regard for justice or sanity. Sorry, but I really can't get Planned Parenthood and Sodomites getting married or even the Obamacare mandate in the top 100 of the most important problems we face.
I became a conservative because Reagan. Reagan is of course known for not being much of a culture warrior. That wasn't because Reagan was some kind of secret liberal on these issues. He wasn't. it was because Reagan realized that when the communists are trying to enslave the entire world and their junior cousins in America are making war on the American economy and way of life abortion and hedonism were pretty far down the list of priorities and even if they were not, there wasn't much the government could do about either.
That conservatism is apparently gone. Now conservatism is all about sodomites and abortion and whatever other side issue the middle and upper class people who call themselves "conservatives" have the luxury to worry about. In many ways conservatives are just as myopic, self obsessed and stupid as Progressives. The entire country is falling apart and these clowns think cutting Planned Parenthood off the government tit should be one of our top priorities.
I think that Reagan started his WOD bullshit to distract reporters from his Iran-Contra bullshit that broke only days after a midterm election. Did Nancy really inspire him because of her sadness about the death (from cocaine, supposedly the first time he tried it) of black basketball player Len Bias?
In other words, "Fuck Reagan". I voted for Ed Clark.
I was in the military under Reagan, too. It sucked. He wanted it to be like being in the military.
Rod Dreher whom I never had liked very much wrote an amazing essay about the failures of modern conservatism and why it has lead to the rise of Trump last week. This is one of the better essays I have read in a long time. It made me think a lot and remember why I always disliked SOCONs. I had forgotten why I disliked SOCONs because I live around Progs and Hipsters who I loath and never am around SOCONs much anymore. So I forgot just what middle class judgement posers most of them are. I consider myself a Christian but I just can't tolerate Church because every Church I have ever seen was nothing but a social club where people sat around and felt superior to the poor bastards who didn't meet their standards. And churches of course never help anyone. Show up at a church desperate and needing help and see what happens. You almost certainly won't get any or much help even if you are a member. So much for picking up the Cross.

"Conservatism" has basically become a way for middle and upper class white people to social and virtue signal about a bunch of marginal issues. Their response to Trump has been nothing short of pathetic. "He is not a CONSERVATIVE" is all they seem to have to say. Well so fucking what? What does that even mean? Worse, they so lack self awareness and have their heads so far up their smug asses, it never dawns on them that most people don't give a shit about "conservatism" thanks to them making it about abortion, the GAYS and maybe lowering taxes and nothing else. Lower taxes don't make any difference to you if you don't have a job. I don't want to be associated with these people. They are while not as bad as Progs, not that much better and certainly share too much of the same sort of class oriented narcissism that Progs have for my tastes. Fuck them.
Conservatism has never really meant anything apart from a slight slowing of the leftward movement of the Overton Window. The 'conservative' position of 2016, on any given issue, was the radical Progressive position on that issue in 1946. American 'conservatives' are nothing but the Washington Generals to the Harlem Globetrotters that is Whig/Progressive ideology; they exist only to provide the illusion of competition between the Inner Party and Outer Party. Moldbug lays it all out clearly
They are no less successful than Libertarians. The problem conservatives have is that they have no real coherent and consistent view of the role of government. They have devolved from being classical liberals into progressives who just think government should have different priorities
Exactly. Then the Stupid Party uses their concerns to extract votes and largesse from them to further aggrandize itself and continue the Inner Party/Outer Party tax money guzzling and crony fellating extravaganza.
This. I grew up conservative, and this is the same conclusion I came to. I have spent a lot more time around church-goers, so do have the same opinion you do of them. (I have found them to be quite generous at the local/personal level.)
The problem is that church goers and other "conservatives" have drank the kool-aid. They tried using the Ring of Power (government) and have lost all their skepticism of it. I realized this when I read the tax plans of Dinesh D'Souza back in the late Bush presidency. He wanted to re-write taxes in support of Child Rearing and fought any tax plan that wasn't somehow rewarding to "Family Values".
I hate Trump- not because he isn't Conservative, but because he has become what all Americans have become. Across this country, people are so wrapped up in what everyone else is doing and convinced that their only option is to use the government to encourage or mandate their preferred behavior. It has become a fight over who gets to wear the One Ring, not how to destroy it.
This is why I laugh at the "Libertarian Moment" articles here. There is definitely a realignment of political priorities going on, but there is no meaningful base of people skeptical of the idea that Government ought to be restrained.
...So do NOT have the same opinion....
The people can be okay. The organizations I think are generally exactly what following Christ should not be.
I have had this conversation with conservatives of all stripes so many times. If you look at the preamble of the Constitution, it tells you exactly what government should do. It lists the purpose of government as
1. Establish Justice (run the courts)
2. Insure domestic Tranquility (run the police force)
3. Provide for the common defence (run the army)
4. Promote the general Welfare (provide things necessary to the commons like roads and bridges and such)
5. Ensure that the government is sustainable and does not devolve into a tyranny.
That is it. The government exists in the space between us. It exists to provide for justice and the fair resolution of our conflicts and for our common defense and those things necessary for our welfare that exists in the public square. No where in that list is protecting people from themselves or ensuring that people live happy and productive private lives.
Once you stray from that list and admit that the government has a duty to govern people's private lives or anything beyond the commons or how they relate to other people, you have lost the debate. Conservatives think drugs are bad. That is fine liberals hate guns. If government has the power and duty to save us from ourselves, how can you say either side is wrong?
To an extent, I wonder if people in this country ever really felt that this was all that a government should do. After all, many (most?) of the people signing onto that preamble then went home to write all sorts of invasive laws at the state level. That they were skeptical of a large federal government is laudable, but it seems like no one has been envisioning a nation/state of people living with a minimalist government.
They believed in local control Overt. But I think the people who wrote the Constitution understood those to be the roles of government.
Even this theory of government doesn't give you a "libertarian" government. I am not a libertarian. I am fine with the government saying you can't run a strip club in your house because a strip club effects the commons. The government has no authority to regulate anything you do as long as it is in private and with another consenting adult. So if you have a private stripper party that doesn't affect your neighbor's quality of life, have fun with the donkey show. It is no one's business but yours.
Once you stray from that list and admit that the government has a duty to govern people's private lives or anything beyond the commons or how they relate to other people, you have lost the debate.
Of course. It's the old Churchill joke about "would you sleep with me for a million dollars... we've established you're a whore, now we're just haggling about the amount".
One of the local state R's, one of the better ones too, was whining in his newsletter that the D's were abusing the new annual legislative sessions (short sessions in even years) by ramming through massive bills with little opportunity for public comment that were "supposed" to be done in just the normal odd year sessions, and the even year sessions were to be limited to emergency issues that couldn't wait. Hello McFly?? Every additional day the legislature is in session is just one more tempting day to pass more legislation & "do something". Totally predictable.
Other than enforcing the few Federal offenses specifically named in the Constitution, policing should be a state, county, or municipal activity.
This pretty much sums up my experience, as well.
Good rant, John. I largely agree.
I think libertarians have also blown it in not convincingly articulating the case against socialism. Reason spends a lot of time hating on bad cops and eminent domain and other trivialities, and meanwhile Bernie is getting widespread support for what is basically Marxism in all but name. WTF happened to this country? That's an emergency, not abortion or gay marriage or copyright law or even trade with China, for crying out loud.
Conservatism and its movement have always been a joke and a failure. Romney was the reflection of the desperation and vapidity of 'high' conservatism. Trump is the vulgarity, ignorance, and stupidity of 'folk' conservatism. Just kill it already.
Says the most ignorant person who posts here. You are not the dumbest person, but the most ignorant by a mile.
J. Bush's VoteSmart match to me was a lot closer than I'd expected. Often I wonder whether we're trying to split hairs in ranking these candidates on a narrow spectrum of issues. Either that, or the range of issues that they can be nailed down on, & are important enough to enough people to be a ratings basis for Project VoteSmart, narrows the spectrum for us.
JEB! is an entitled statist slaver, yet he ran such a pathetic campaign that i started to feel bad for him toward the end. It was just embarrassing.
Then i remembered that he's a statist slaver and am glad he's been so thoroughly chastened.
I cannot for the life of me understand why people think he is smarter than his brother. George W. Bush was not a clever speaker but the claims that he was stupid were just Prog bullshit. Jeb in contrast really seems dimwitted. He has absolutely no charisma or political instincts. I can't understand why anyone thought he was going to be President or anything but a terrible candidate.
GWB was a mediocre speaker with a Texas accent. In the eyes of our superiors in the media, that makes him stupid, even if everyone (R or D) who has ever spent 15 minutes talking to him says otherwise.
I knew people who worked in the Bush White House and they all said he was very smart. I really don't get that sense for Jeb.
I've heard the same things about GWB, even from strident liberals. Maybe JEB! is also smart, but I don't get that impression and haven't heard anyone making that claim, either.
JEB! Is very smart but spends all of his time trying to prove he is smart. GWB is also very smart but he accepts that not everyone thinks so and is comfortable enough in himself to be self-depreciating about it.
The only thing I liked about W was the word "misunderestimate".
And here I was looking forward to the first ever punctuation mark being elected president. I guess the nation just wasn't ready for that.
Jeb!
What epic concern trolling as its most absolute pathetic.
Good riddance to the Bush dynasty. We won't miss you.
Oh, by the way, wrong again Weigel, just like you nearly always are. Now pay up your fucking bet, you turd.
" the easy, entitled comfort with which he slipped into his place as the early favorite of the Republican party establishment."
You know who else easily and comfortably slipped into their entitled place as the early favorite of their party's establishment?
Did PB make a bet for Jeb?
when gay marriage won the court, Bush was the only one who said "I personally don't like it, but it's the law, accept it and move on". That's exactly what I want a president to be able to say.
I call this a failure of the debate moderators. You cannot turn around a circus show into a math lecture no matter how good at math you are. You cannot argue based on reason when the money throws poo and banana skins back at you.
At the very least Bush was the most reasonable of them all. Maybe that's not saying much, but now even that option is gone.
At the very least Bush was the most reasonable of them all.
The Republicans have done nothing but get their asses kicked in Presidential elections promoting "reasonable" candidates. Bush would have lost too if it hadn't been for a once in a millennium quirk in the electoral college. You can hardly blame their rank-and-file for having the impression that the party bosses don't care if their candidate wins as long as they can maintain their access to the levers of power.
And the bottom line is that the Bush name is and will continue to be toxic for at least a generation if not longer. The GOP political machine just blew $100 million because they were too fucking stubborn to cure Jeb of his delusions of being an electable candidate. They would have blown a hell of a lot more if Trump hadn't bullycided him out of the race.
Other than getting us involved in a couple of wars after failing to stop 9/11, doubling down on the WOD, jacking up entitlements, and putting the USA back in the red, he was pretty good, right?
Late-to-the-game post: "he put out an absurd tax plan based on a fantasy of how cutting taxes works."
So, feeding the beast thievery is best. Steady. On.
When the best people have to offer you is sympathy, when the only time you get attention is when people want something to laugh at, you're in deep, deep trouble. Any good intentions aside the presidency is all about fighting continuous small battles, in Congress, with the press, with other politicians of both parties, and in the world arena. Someone like Jeb who has no stomach for such things is better off making policy recommendations in a congressional committee somewhere, and America will be better off for it.
It did not help him the goal for about 75% of Americans this cycle is 'No one named Bush or Clinton in the White House ever again'. You'd think his organization would've polled for that before he threw his hat in the arena.
meh, he had a decent conservitive record as gov of florida. Although we all know hes bought and paid for, hes more conservative than Donald Trump. Remember conservative and libertarian on economic issues are virtually identical.
The only problem is that the Republicans rarely follow through.

Historically cutting taxes and spending does work. One without the other, not so much.

Jeb Bush dropping out of the GOP race.
What a tragedy.
Now comedians will have to concentrate on Hitlery and Comrade Bernie.

You somehow missed the part where Paul wanted to shut down 90% of the federal government along with cutting taxes.
Hi Mike. Still a tedious cunt.
Hi Mike. *You're still a tedious cunt.
The most LOL part is that the RNC changed the delegate rules specifically to fuck over Ron Paul.
Whoops.
I mean, you want (L)ibertarians to be taken seriously so you want the clowns out - then you completely distort the clowns' arguments with liberal strawmen.
What kind of bigot uses the word "retarded" these days?
Oh Hihn, where would we be without your petty bitching?
+1 tedious cunt
I am afraid "constitutional rights" doesn't mean what you think it means Micheal. Your contempt for reasoning is again noted. You are a half wit Micheal. You don't even understand the arguments regarding abortion especially but gay rights as well.
Let me give you a clue; the Constitution doesn't mean "the government must give me my pony".
And now they're going to get Trump for their efforts.
I would hate anyone that ever had a pony growing up.
The ad hominem attacks are strong with this one...
Need a safe space, Mike?
Hey Mike, /prog means Akira's mocking progressive arguments. You might have noticed that if you weren't such a reactionary, senile dipshit.
