It might seem silly but EW&F were genuinely one of the most musically sophisticated groups of the 20th century. their tunes are crazy complex (for pop tunes) but still always super-catchy.

Not silly at all. Totally agree. These decades had tunes that were "catchy" while showcasing depth of talent. Different genre, but Steely Dan also comes to mind. I remember when I was learning how to play the bass and tried to master songs such as these. Hard as fuck, but once I got it, I was more the better for it.
