Monty Python's John Cleese Condemns Political Correctness on Campuses
'Then, as far as I'm concerned, you're living in 1984.'

British actor John Cleese—best known for his roles in the Monty Python films—joins the list of celebrity comedians perturbed by the utter rejection of so-called offensive humor on college campuses. In a recent video for Big Think, Cleese lamented that political correctness was depriving society of a sense of proportion. "Then, as far as I'm concerned, you're living in 1984," he said.
A transcript of his remarks:
I've been warned recently, don't go to most university campuses because the political correctness has been taken from being a good idea—which is, let's not be mean particularly to people who are not able to look after themselves very well, that's a good idea—to the point where any kind of criticism of any individual or group can be labelled cruel. And the whole point about humor, the whole point about comedy—and believe you me, I've thought about it—is that all comedy is critical. Even if you make a very inclusive joke—like, How do you make God laugh? Tell him your plans—that's about the human condition, it's not excluding anyone, it's saying we all have all these plans that probably won't come and isn't it funny that we still believe they're going to happen. So that's a very inclusive joke, but it's still critical. All humor is critical. If we start saying, oh, we musn't criticize or offend them, then humor is gone, and with humor goes a sense of proportion, and then, as far as I'm concerned, you're living in 1984.
Cleese is no stranger to controversial comedy—Monty Python sketches frequently pilloried various political and religious traditions. If Life of Brian, for instance, were to be shown on a college campus today, it would not surprise me if it generated a protest.

Good for Mr. Cleese, big fan
Political Correctness, in all it's manifestations and " isms ", is a brainwashing technique based on Critical Theory
It is a system of cyclical logic that once adopted by the user never allows for another approach, and the end-game is that the assigned antagonist always embodies hatred, racism, or oppression.
They become intellectually trapped, because in order to see and realize when they err, they would have to empathize and entertain their assigned antagonists point of view...this causes great cognitive dissonance due to contradicting their previously assigned value of the antagonist and so is rejected or avoided.
The remaining cognitive dissonance is alleviated by the religious cult-like belief that they are on the " right " or " good " side of every issue, always battling racists, bigots, and oppressors. Like religious zealots they assume moral authority and claim to have " more knowledge " than the average folk
.
Cults have made up transgressions against their gods, and Politically Correct ideology has made up transgressions against their ideal society
.
It is the same type of system used by cults, utilizing the cyclical intellectual trap described by Kafka in " The Trial ".
This is why you see the media, politicians, and academia structuring and presenting every issue as Victim vs Oppressor, psycho-politics....when every issue is presented as Victim vs Oppressor, you've already assumed one is guilty.
I was not familiar with that pile of horseshit under that name:
"Critical theory was established as a school of thought primarily by five Frankfurt School theoreticians: Herbert Marcuse, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin, and Erich Fromm. Modern critical theory has additionally been influenced by Gy?rgy Luk?cs and Antonio Gramsci,"
'Nuff said. I've not read all of them, but between Marcuse, Fromm and Gramsci, there might be one or two comments worthy of repeating.
The world would be a better place if none of them ever got published.

NERD!
Prepare for much less accomplished and much less discerning experts of comedy to tell you why you're wrong, Cleese.
And on that note, is this the funniest moment ever put on film?

He only narrates it, but How Not to be Seen is mine
How Not to be Seen is even more fantastic in today's post-Snowden world.
That said, my favorite are either "The machine that goes Ping!" or the Cheese Shoppe. Watching Cleese rattle off 40+ types of cheese without a blink is delightful.

Mine would be the King Arthur/Black Knight battle, concluding, after many hilarious moments and lines, with the disarmed (and dis-legged) Knight concluding..."Call it a draw then."
I showed that to a friend who'd fallen off a roof at a construction job and had several cracked ribs. He'd never seen it before and cursed me roundly for the bout of painful, but uncontrollable laughter that resulted. Such lulz!!
(*sigh* OR the French Taunting, OR the Self Defense Sketch. OR the previously mentioned Cheese Shop sketch...OR...)

Hey...

We're all individuals.
I'm not.
"The People called Romans they go to the house," perfectly captured the sense of learning a Romance Language.
There are so many movies from the past that would generate a protest today, including many Mel Brooks movies, earlier Woody Allen movies and the vast majority of Stallone's career. It is part of what makes present day movies so uninteresting.
HEY GUYS! I HACKED INTO CRUSTY'S CHATROULETTE FEED!
Do I look like OMWC? Sheesh.
Also, would.
Don't pretend that wasn't you.
The receiver was Stephen Hawking, in case anyone was wondering.
There goes my reputation.
I don't hate the player, I hate the game.
Both.
Not nearly as handsome and debonair.
So you're saying Crusty is dickless?
No. He's a eunuch that gets testosterone injections. His equipment still works.
Yeah, well, I just watched two tweenage girls fight to the death.
Most recent comment:
"am i gonna go to jail for watching this??"
Maybe. Just maybe.
Would, after I see two forms of identification.
I did catch some of Blazing Saddles the other day, and man, that movie really would have be excoriated if released today. People complain about Tarantino's use of the n-word.
Excuse me while I whip this out.
i wonder how dogma would do... considering it sparked protest even back then.
MP: Aye. In them days, we'd a' been glad to have the price of a cup o' speech
GC: A cup ' COLD speech.
EI: Without milk or sugar.
TG: OR speech!
MP: In a filthy, cracked cup.
EI: We never used to have a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.
GC: The best WE could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth.
You know, when you're no longer allowed to mock like that all we'll have left is an ex-parody.
And future historians will wonder why we pined for Fords.
You mean "fiords"?
Two girls one newspaper.

And almost everyone is wondering why there is such a backlash that an uninhibited and outspoken person like Donald Trump is kicking ass. The proggies brought Trump on themselves. Let them eat cake.
Yeah, but they brought him on US, too.
Sigh, I know...
Wandering OT, Sevo, but I have a deep suspicion that Trump is an AAArnold Schwarzenegger clone. I'd vote for him, warts and all, if I thought he really was the asshole he pretends to be. Next to nuking Washington from orbit, he's the next best thing. But, like Arnold, he's too enamored by celebrity to hold his ground.
Ahnold never had the bluster, and (dunno if you follow CA state politics), he tried to break the Pub Sec union monopoly. Hell, he was elected on that plank!
He got it on the ballot, the electorate (not me!) said 'no thanks'. Thereafter he seemed to say 'I thought you were serious; fuck you!' and sort of 'managed' his way through his term.
Don't see Trump as anywhere close to that sort abstract thought. Every issue for Trump is seen through the self-referential lens; If it's not about Trump, he doesn't care.
I live in CA, so yes, you are right that Arnold tried to tie his agenda to ballot initiatives he supported. When the initiatives failed, he just gave up and left the Kennedy clan in charge. I don't think we have much to disagree about.

Shut your festering gob, you tit! Your type really makes me puke, you vacuous, coffee-nosed, malodorous, pervert!!!
What? I came in here for an arguement!
I'm drunk and ready. Give me your best shot.
My argument is, ye are WRONG!
The seasons are actually caused by air conditioning. Spring comes around, the vanguards of the humanoids, say, look, it is spring, time to turn on the AC. The AC units crank heat into the outdoors. The outdoors heat up. Now everyone else, the laggards, have to turn THEIR AC on!
Fall comes around, the vanguards of the humanoids, say, look, it is fall, time to turn OFF the AC. The AC units no longer crank heat into the outdoors. The outdoors cool down. Now everyone else, the laggards, have to turn THEIR AC back OFF!
Hence, we have seasons... If'n ye-all fools will just STOP with this AC crap, we could ALL just save the frickin' MONEY for the AC, Government Almighty DAMN it!!! Time for a new LAW, dammit!!!!
OK, yeah, I know? Y'all have all been brainwashed with this that them thar silly "tilt of the Earth" theory. Well, riddle me this: We-all as Glibertarians all know very-very well, about the left-ward tilt of academia, news media, Government Almighty servants, etc., they ALL tilt left-tard and left-ward, in favor of ever-larger Government Almighty. So, we might as well say, the entire PLANET tilts left-ward? SO WHAT?!?! It has done so, with more or less the same 23 or so degrees of tilty-tilt, for going on 4.5 billions years or so, now? Same tilt, always!!! So how can a never-changing tilt, explain the ever-changing seasons!?!?! EXPLAIN, "as you would to a child" ("Galaxy Quest" style), and THEN, when I am good and well satisfied, THEN I will take BACK my theory! But not till then!!!!

Watched The Germans episode of Fawlty Towers just last night.
Politically incorrect from beginning to end and funnier than hell.
Get a load of this guy. Doesn't he know Spike Lee and Chris Rock have taught us there are BIGGER PROBLEMS with blacks not getting plastic awards because white privilege...or something?
Condensed version: "I haven't been relevant since the early 80's so I need to appear hip and edgy to explain the current disinterest in my material".
I'm an ex-beatnik, hippie, biker (1%er), and English teacher/lecher in Taiwan and libertarian. Please explain yourself.
I'm merely observing that Cleese not too long ago described Sarah Palin as too crazy even for a Monty Python sketch - and has been generally critical of American Conservatives - and is now jumping on the Anti-PC Rebel bandwagon. It seems to me like a cynical attempt to gain notoriety and raise his show-biz profile rather than expressing a sincere opinion.

If it was just the Proggies that got hoist upon their own petard with fucking SJW "Newspeak", I'd say "Fuck you, you got it coming". However, its all of us that got dragged kicking and screaming to have to eat of the giant shit sandwich. And yes, I'm sure some unfunny cunt is going to tell Cleese to shut his gob. I'd lay even money on it either being David Cross or Janeane Garofolo....two unfunny cunts as there ever were....
I love love LOVE John Cleese, but I wish he'd achieve a bit of clarity here. He's a bigtime proggie overall who is blind to how the philosophy and politics he supports leads almost inevitably to the kind of thought control he deplores.
Exactly, he says, "because the political correctness has been taken from being a good idea..."
No, it is never a good idea to allow people to control what speech is acceptable based on who the speaker or target is.
Basically, another one pissed that he is not given the free pass anymore just because he's one of the good ones.
Loved him as "M".
It was a "good idea" when it was social pressure to not be a dick.
It was a "bad idea" when it became enshrined in policy.

I remember Cleese saying this a long time ago - that all humour is critical. It really isn't true. Also he does have progressive-authoritarian tendencies.
Still at least he's in the right camp this time.
I doubt PC is actually as new as all that. It's probably just a new set of things you can't say. I wonder exactly how free people were to speak in 1950s Britain, or 1850s..
Unfortunately, I think he's got more than "tendencies". I wouldn't be surprised if he's for Uncle Bernie. Just another iconoclast, blowing up everyone else's constructs while being fully guilty in his own right. I have little doubt Mr. Cleese would unleash agents to vigorously pursue and harass peaceful/productive people he didn't like. Deeply critical of other people and their philosophies while deeply entrenched in his own.
