  2. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

    1) Today in the Washington Post there's an article on how small plans with low costs are facing punitive taxes, "stemm[ing] from an obscure part of the Affordable Care Act designed to support health plans with lots of sick, expensive customers by giving them money from plans with healthier customers."

Man, it's years down the road, and we still finding out just how bad Obamacare is. I've read a couple different places that even with a Republican congress and a Republican in the White House, the elephants don't really plan to repeal Obamacare. But the thing is, the more time goes on, the more it becomes apparent the whole thing is a pile of shit. I think if Republicans do find themselves controlling the levers of office in 2017, they'll have no choice but to repeal it.

    1. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

      137) Goddamnit. Okay, try this link. And correct Thought numbering, too.

      1. Tonio   10 years ago

Dammit, the squirrels are also active this morning.

Another reset of your numbering system, JATNAS? Enquiring minds want to know.

      1. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

Nope, just technical difficulties here at JATNAS Broadcasting System.

"an obscure part of the Affordable Care Act"

How many times have people been screwed over with "obscure" laws?

No, Obamacare is not an "obscure" law, you can't just say, "oh, we didn't know about *that* part."

And assuming the provision is obscure, doesn't the media bear a share of the blame?

      1. WTF   10 years ago

Hey, Pelosi said that they had to pass it to see what was in it, what more do you want?

        1. Mickey Rat   10 years ago

The whole thing a a obscure to Congress when they passed it which should have a been a killer argument against the damned thing

      2. Zeb   10 years ago

We need a law against obscure laws.

      3. Restoras   10 years ago

        Feature, not a bug.

      4. Mainer2   10 years ago

They told us at the time they knew it wasn't perfect.

    4. Illocust   10 years ago

The republicans may just be waiting for the democrats to beg them to let the bill be repealed. Once Obama's out of power everyone but Pelosi will lose the last reason to have their names attached to this mess.

      1. Rich   10 years ago

        Hence, "Democratcare".

      2. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

No, Dems will say, "we compromised too much - we didn't go for single-payer - no wonder the law isn't working!"

        1. Monty Crisco   10 years ago

First rule of liberalism: the failure of liberalism AUTOMATICALLY justifies MORE LIBERAL POLICIES!!!

          1. Derp-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

The solution to government failure is always more government.

    5. Derp-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

Obamacare was intentionally designed to give everyone awesome benefits during Barry's tenure and punt all of the adverse effects until after he was gone.

      1. Illocust   10 years ago

It failed on the first part, though. The awesome benefits failed to materialize and everything has already gotten really bad. Those states refusing to sign on with the whole horse and pony show fucked the democrats out of their gilded years that were supposed to get everybody settled into the new normal. Now the bill's coming due and no one is really attached to the bennies provided by the legislation.

Instead of being able to smoothly transition to single payer as the system collapses under its own weight, the democrats are forced to argue that we shouldn't roll back to the system we had before. They failed to create a government run baseline better than the baseline we already had, and with the constant hits people are starting to forget the things they didn't like about the past.

        1. Derp-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

Well, I'm sure somehow or another that's the Republicans' fault because TEH RACEISM or something.

          1. WTF   10 years ago

No, because the republicans wouldn't help to make it a good bill and take part in passing it. I have actually seen this argument being made.

            1. Mainer2   10 years ago

It's one of the common arguments I see.

        2. robc   10 years ago

          Only because he won reelection.

        3. TheZeitgeist   10 years ago

Obamacare was intentionally designed to give everyone awesome benefits during Barry's tenure and punt all of the adverse effects until after he was gone.

'Real' insurance starts being liable and potentially footing bills day you have it, not several decades of payments later. Most private insurers do not make money on premiums, but on returns from investing the 'float.'

Ponzi schemes can't work in that actuarial structure, even over short time horizons like Barry's career. No way can a Ponzi setup be liquid enough to make payments soon as tomorrow, maintain the political baksheesh, and stay solvent at the same time. Something's gotta give starting day 1.

      2. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

Obamacare was intentionally designed to keep healthcare from collapsing under the weight of its' collusive price fixing. It isn't working, nor will it ever, any more than student loans will make education affordable.

Your answer was accurate as well.

        1. Bill Dalasio   10 years ago

Because mandating purchase of a product and setting requirements that said product be standardized regardless of consumer demand is the absolute perfect way to prevent a system of collusive price fixing.

    6. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   10 years ago

I told you Yanks from the day they passed the bill you were fucked despite all the 'we gonna' rhetoric.

You're goosed and Obama goosed you.

      1. WTF   10 years ago

Yup, it's never going away. The republicans, true their "Stupid Party" status, will work with the democrats to pass innumerable "fixes" that will keep making things worse, until there is just "no choice" but to implement single-payer.

        1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   10 years ago

And that 2 000 paged monstrosity will turn into 20 000 pages in no time flat!

      2. Zeb   10 years ago

Yeah, I think we knew that. But someone's got to try at least.

    7. Cdr Lytton   10 years ago

The stupid party leadership was bragging about accomplishing their back home promise by passing that repeal bill a couple of weeks ago (that was predictably vetoed by Obama) as if that was the entire thing. "We pass a repeal, mission accomplished!" No dickwad, your activist base wants the thing actually repealed.

Reminds me of one of my old sergeants. "I'll try"=a quiter who has already quit. Like the big gray bags of shit.

    8. Certified Public Asshat   10 years ago

My premiums actually dropped 16% from last year*

*This is not an endorsement of the ACA.

      1. Citizen X   10 years ago

My premiums went up by about that amount, and both my network and the list of covered services shrank substantially. Thanks, Obama!

        1. Lee G   10 years ago

In 3 years, premiums and deductible have doubled.

          I'm loving it.

          1. Citizen X   10 years ago

Ha! My deductible only went up by 33%!

      2. WTF   10 years ago

Then you are one of the lucky few. This was not the case for the vast majority.

      3. Illocust   10 years ago

Mine stayed about the same, but I'm somebody you don't want on your system. My monthly medication alone eats up the entirety of my premiums from both myself and my employer.

      4. Teaching Student   10 years ago

Mine went up about 15%, I couldn't afford it and lost my insurance for the last quarter... great fucking system...

      5. Mike Laursen   10 years ago

I'm covered by health insurance at work, and am benefiting from the improved HSA rules that raised the limits and allow the money to roll over from year to year. But I think my situation is better than anybody who is facing having to self-insure.

The really interesting thing that happens is that both my and my wife's doctors switched over to a accept-no-insurance-at-all, pre-paid concierge model this year. They just don't even want to deal with insurance anymore.

    2. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

Exactly. There is no candidate on that stage who would benefit from mentioning the confederate flag in any context.

      1. Zeb   10 years ago

Indeed. It probably wouldn't make anyone any new friends and would definitely make enemies.

I warned everyone after Bowie, but did anyone take me seriously?

I'm now going to have to watch Die Hard while listening to Space Oddity and see if they match up.

The part of the script that confused me was when he threatened Holly and said 'since I'm moving up to kidnapping'.

Moving up? He killed two people in the movie. Last I checked murder kidnapping. I think that was one of those 'oops' in the script.

        1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   10 years ago

I put the symbol for 'greater' and it didn't catch. Anyway, murder -greater- than kidnapping was the point.

          1. Zeb   10 years ago

But kidnapping requires more planning and commitment. Murder you just do it and it's done.

            1. thrakkorzog   10 years ago

Except he had already kidnapped something like 30 people. If you go and take an entire office Christmas party hostage at gunpoint, that's a whole lot of kidnapping charges.

              1. Zeb   10 years ago

That was a general comment. I don't even know what we are talking about.

Albania - nominally Islamic? Hoxa was as savage as any commie in supressing religion. I think Albania's state religion now is "Crime".

Azerbaijan - had some trouble, but is too busy growling and circling Armenia (and vice versa) to be much of a hotspot?

Turkey - I sure hope they stay that way...

Kurd areas - wish we could help them more.

      Brazen Islamic country?

    3. Tonio   10 years ago

      Not moderate.

I was going to write something about how at least this happened in a country which had been enabling and ultimately breeding muslim extremism, then I remembered that some of the western countries which have suffered attacks have also, perhaps unwittingly, been doing the same thing.

    4. Zeb   10 years ago

Or at least moderately non-fucked-up countries. I wouldn't say the mere presence of militants makes the whole country non-moderate, necessarily. You may be powerless to stop a drone from hovering over your own yard

he grabbed his Benelli M1 Super 90 shotgun, took aim and unleashed three rounds of birdshot.

    Feel the Ben!

    1. Tonio   10 years ago

And while that remedy is (legally) available to people in rural areas, that can get you in trouble in most towns and cities. However, drones are fragile and I can think of a number of non-firearm mechanisms for dealing with that problem, starting with a garden hose, tennis ball launchers, net guns, drones dropping nets from above, etc.

    5. Illocust   10 years ago

Did you consent to sex at the time? If yes, then you were not raped. If no, were you capable of giving consent (not unconscious for example, merely wasted does not count as incapable)? If no, you were raped. If yes, did you convey your lack of consent in a verbal or physical manner (attempting to shove them off) at the time (saying you don't want to have sex three hours earlier doesn't count)? If yes, you were raped. If no, were violence or what a reasonable man would consider threats of criminal behavior used to obtain the sex from you? If yes, you were raped. If no, you were not raped.

Congratulations, now you know. I'll make a flow chart at a later date, to help those who might be confused.

I imagine the hours with him consisting of this conversation:
      Him: C'mon!
      Her: No.
      Him C'mon!
      Her: No.
      Him: C'mon!

      Him: SCORE!

She was basically the most reluctant, least receptive fuck in history.

"Brickbat: Getting Too Close By Charles Oliver"

The story is about the Israelis refusing to put a certain book in the public-school curriculum. The book is about a Jewish/Arab romance, and the government thinks it endorses intermarriage.

It is the very nature of government-run schools that the government sets the curriculum.

That's a problem, of course, but the headline should be something like: "The government continues to run the government schools in Israel."

The very fact that students are learning from a government-set curriculum constitutes an argument for private education, but the inclusion or exclusion of a particular book doesn't make the case against government schools any worse or any better.

""In a brazen midday assault, a team of well-armed militants detonated explosives and opened fire Thursday in the heart of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.""

Reminder: Indonesia is the country people point to as an example of a majority Muslim country that is 'moderate.' They're so moderate they jail people for 5 years for criticizing Mohammad on Facebook, there are provinces where they beat women with canes for wearing pants, and they almost sparked an international incident by executing a bunch of Australians who were caught smuggling drugs.

And now they've got ISIS affiliates blowing things up.

If you want to point to a moderate Muslim country, maybe you should look at Azerbaijan or Uzbekistan. It's kind of laughable that people who defend Islam know so little about the religion that they actually think Indonesia is the best example of a moderate majority Muslim state.

    1. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

Oh, one time, in Indonesia, a guy got a prison sentence for printing pamphlets critical of Islam. A mob of over 1000 Muslims then rioted and burned a bunch of churches because they were angry he didn't get the death penalty.

Again - this country is only moderate if you compare them to the total horrorshows going on in the Middle East and North Africa.

I'm not talking about people here. I'm talking about people like Reza Aslan and other apologists for the religion.

Specifically, if you argue that modern Islam is a uniquely radical religion, you run into people saying "what about moderate Indonesia?" with startling frequency. It's a meme among apologists for the religion and it's completely laughable if you actually study the subject.

        1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

Maybe Indonesia is radical, but you can't prove it simply by citing a terrorist attack in that country. Unless you mean that there are Indonesian terrorists, but do we even know the nationality of these perps?

"An Indonesian man was sentenced Thursday to two and a half years in prison for denying the existence of God on his Facebook page, a ruling human rights groups say demonstrates a rising tide of religious intolerance in the majority-Muslim country."

"Aan was arrested in January after an angry mob reacting to the Facebook posts stormed his office, where he works as a civil servant, and beat him. Police intervened and took Aan to the police station for his safety, the Jakarta Globe reported."

                1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

So they didn't actually send him to prison, they just gave him his very own safe space for two and a half years.

      2. ant1sthenes   10 years ago

Well, defense correspnds to a mode of attack. Defending Islam makes sense when it is Islam, a set of ideas, that is attacked. Defending the individuality of people makes sense when it is Muslims (a group of humans who necessarily believe in Islam, but may emphasize certain aspects over others and may let it control their actions more or less, and who have different cultural traditions, and who have different personalities and personal ethics as well) being attacked.

I see both sort of attacks happen here. It probably makes most sense as libertarians to say that there are specific ideas that, if a person believes them enough to act on them, are dangerous. Islam (or some interpretations, at any rate) contains some such ideas. It's easier to reform a religion than annihilate it, and unlike human populations, ideas don't have rights or inherent dignity. Therefore, it makes most sense to talk about the specific aspects of Islam, as practiced, that produce bad behavior, and how people can be convinced to abandon them. And, if necessary, how those that do not abandon them can be prevented against their will, or by their death if need be, from acting on them.

        1. R C Dean   10 years ago

Personally, I think "Islamists" (defined as Muslims who want sharia and conservative version of Islam to be the governing principles of the state) is a subset of Muslims, so I'm trying to refer to Islamists rather than Muslims.

Freddy Lim: Lead Singer of Death Metal Band Running for Legislative Seat in Taiwan Elections

Lim, who is frontman for the band Chthonic, is representing the newly-formed New Power Party to run for a position in Parliament. Part of his platform is lowering the voting age from 20 to 18.

    1. Zeb   10 years ago

It's a bit funny how the age of majority and voting age used to be 21 in a lot of places. And it being lowered to 18 (or lower) has come at the same time as people have basically more and more delayed becoming a proper adult. One might almost think that when people are living longer and taking longer to grow up and enter the real world the voting age should go up.

From the comments: only the government could create a shortage in women's access to sperm

The number of women using donated sperm to get pregnant is rising, but many find the cost of treatment at private clinics prohibitive. This has led some women to use unlicensed donors. [?] Very few women are eligible for artificial insemination on the NHS as the criteria are very strict. Private licensed clinics cost between ?500 and ?1,000 for each cycle of treatment. Mr Watson charges ?50 for his services [?] "If you go to a fertility clinic people have to go through lots of hurdles ? counselling sessions, huge amounts of tests and then charge absolute fortunes for the service ? but realistically if you've got a private donor you can just go and see them, meet them somewhere, get what you want and just go," he explains.

Just nine men are registered as donors a year after the opening of Britain's national sperm bank in Birmingham. [?] Donors are paid ?35 per clinic visit, but Ms Witjens said financial reward was not a good way to boost recruitment. "We might get more donors if we paid ?50 or ?100 per donation, but money corrupts. "If you feel you can make ?200 a week for four months, you might hide things about your health."

EXCLUSIVE: Byron York interviews Donald Trump

Let's talk about the Democratic race. Who would you rather face in a general election, Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders?

Very interesting question. I've really had my mind set on Hillary. We've had some very good polls over the last few days, and actually even before that, some excellent polls saying that I beat her. And I've really been thinking in terms of her, but now I see what's happening and there's a possibility that it won't be her. I think beating him ultimately would be easier than beating her. I don't really care who I face. I want to face whoever it is. It's like the baseball team, they say who would you rather face? The best answer is whoever it is that's there.

I'm looking forward to winning here. A lot of people have dropped out. A lot of people will drop out after Iowa and New Hampshire. I think you'll see a lot of people drooping out, which is a good thing, not a bad thing. Good for me. The poll numbers have been fabulous. I have some polls now at 42, which is pretty amazing when you have 14 to 15 people. But I look forward to running against whoever it is. It doesn't make that much difference to me. I think I'll beat Hillary. I think Sanders actually would be easier to beat. But it makes no difference to me whatsoever.

T-Mobile store employee shoots 2 armed robbery suspects

The T-Mobile store in the 2000-block of East 95th St. was left riddled with bullet holes. If not for the employee carrying a weapon with a concealed carry license, the manager of the store says he might be telling a different story.

"I think concealed carry is a great opportunity for managers, workers, employees to protect themselves in these cases. And our employee did a great job to protect themselves and the other employee," said Neil Tadros, store manager.

He says two men entered the store and acted like they were shopping for phones for a few minutes, then pulled out guns.

One employee ran to the back to call for help while the other pulled out his own gun and fired at the two suspects. He hit one of them in the groin and the arm, and the other in the abdomen and the arm.

The men ran from the store with the employee chasing them, on the phone giving a description to police.

The Market Thinks China's Currency Policy Drives U.S. Monetary Policy

Eurodollar futures are increasingly at odds with the Federal Reserve's dot plot , which details each policymakers' preferred trajectory for interest rates, amid Chinese currency weakness and uncertainty on how Beijing will manage the yuan. The market's limited expectations for the speed and magnitude of the tightening cycle are "clearly in policy error territory," according to Haworth.

Financial market carnage stemming from the devaluation of the yuan in August stayed the Fed's hand at its September meeting, with monetary policymakers indicating that the downdraft "may restrain economic activity somewhat."

Market participants, it seems, are of the opinion that lightning will strike twice. Credit Suisse, however, cautioned that there's still plenty of time for the situation to be resolved as a prelude to a hike?as was the case in the run-up to liftoff in December.

Dinosaurs performed dances to woo mates, according to new evidence

Predatory dinosaurs performed a ritual, bird-like dance to woo their mates, according to paleontologists who have studied huge scrape marks left behind by the animals in western Colorado, The Guardian reported.

Paleobiologists have long speculated that dinosaurs had mating rituals like those of their descendants, modern birds, but the scrapes would be the first physical evidence of "dinosaur foreplay", lead scientist Martin Lockley said.

"We know they had feathers and crests and good vision," Lockley said, speaking of theropods, the carnivore family of Tyrannosaurs rex. "They were visual animals, but there's never been any actual physical evidence that their anatomy and behavior was co-opted for fairly energetic display. This is physical evidence."

The roughly 50 scrape marks were found in 100m-year-old sandstone, in irregular groupings that look like the display arenas some birds gather in to compete for mates. The scrapes run in five- and six-foot patterns that resemble the traces left behind by courting birds.

Federal probe sought for Buffett's mobile home unit

Senior U.S. Democratic lawmakers asked federal regulators to investigate whether Clayton Homes, the mobile home unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N), targets minority borrowers with discriminatory lending and collection practices.

A letter on Tuesday from Representative Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, and fellow committee members Michael Capuano, Emanuel Cleaver and Keith Ellison called on the Justice Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to "pursue appropriate corrective action" against Clayton.

It followed a report last month by the Seattle Times newspaper and online BuzzFeed News accusing the largest U.S. mobile home builder of exploiting black, Latino and Native American borrowers by driving them into subprime loans they cannot afford, and harming communities by repossessing homes after borrowers default.

That report also claimed that Clayton's corporate culture condones racism, including against its own workers.

Rolling Stone rape hoaxer Jackie must release documents, says judge

A federal judge has ordered Jackie, the woman who told a fake gang-rape story to Rolling Stone in 2014, to hand over communications and documents that related to her hoax.

Judge Glen Conrad ordered the release of the documents on behalf of a lawsuit filed by University of Virginia Dean Nicole Eramo, who was maligned in the article and is now suing Rolling Stone for defamation. Eramo's lawyers argued that Jackie had documents that proved Eramo did not do the things she was accused of doing in the Rolling Stone article.
