State of the Union Tonight, Controversy Over Free Speech on Twitter, 'Audit the Fed' Vote Fails: P.M. Links
-
Ted Cruz Yes, tonight is the night of the dreaded State of the Union. Reason will live-tweet it, though most of my colleagues would like the whole sorry spectacle to be abolished.
- Twitter de-recognized Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos last week, touching off a debate over whether the social media platform should be more conscious of harassment or more apt to protect its users' expectations of free speech.
- Should Jackie, the subject of Rolling Stone's gang rape debacle, be named? The Washington Post still won't do it—in part because the paper promised to avoid doing so in exchange for an interview with her—while The Daily Caller's Chuck Ross has begun writing her full name in articles.
- Speaking of Jackie, the extent of her catfishing scheme was recently revealed in court documents relating to UVA Dean Nicole Eramo's lawsuit against Rolling Stone. Jackie also lied to friend and crush Ryan Duffin about suffering from a terminal illness.
- Paul's Audit the Fed bill was rejected by the Senate. Sen. Ted Cruz didn't show up for the vote.
- Watch Liz Mair battle Ann Coulter over the latter's insane advocacy of Donald Trump.

You can't have a drinking game on a work night.
Citation needed, teetotaler.
I'M SAYING THAT'S WHY THEY WANT IT ABOLISHED, THEY'RE A BUNCH OF LUSHES.
As a lush myself, even an excuse to *not* drink is an excuse to drink, DUH DOI
Shouldn't that be "DUH DUI"?
I wonder how the invitees feel about being human props.
And who can forget when Mattress Girl was a distinguished guest?
That's some high standards those props will have to live up to.

Empty chair was quite popular at the Heffalump fest in '12.
Hello.
How interesting to learn, in the linked article concerning a Twitter "free speech debate" (ha-ha), that Milo Yiannopoulos doesn't recognize the line separating "ridicule and criticism" from criminal conduct. That line has been very clearly defined by the courts, as any reporter should know. See the documentation of America's leading criminal "satire" case at:

hmmm....5 min late for ME!
I guess Colorado is only allowed to get the lynx on time once a quarter.
You're in CO too?
I'll be listening to an exciting hockey game, anyway.
You lost me right between "exciting" and "hockey".
Soccer is exciting, too.
Hockey is exciting because there are occasionally fights to watch.
What's soccer got? Watching the flops?
...whether the social media platform should be more conscious of harassment, or more apt to protect its users' expectations of free speech.
Are they being conscious of litigation?
Councilman-elect seeking pardon owes thousands in fines
Restitution? Did he rob his dealer or something?
Note to Rachel Morocco - I was simply speaking hypothetically about your client.
Restitution to the state to help cover the cost of incarceration would be my guess. The state makes you pay for the billet they use to execute your sentence, don't ya know.
I did some checking, and the situation looks like it might get awkward -
(a) The guy is black.
(b) Some white politician recently pled guilty to some stuff, but the plea involved only misdemeanors, not felonies.
(c) Persons convicted of "infamous crimes" are ineligible for public office in Penn and the courts say felonies are infamous crimes.
(d) The governor can't act on the pardon application until the Board of Pardons has a public hearing and makes a positive recommendation (if it chooses to do so).
(e) The guy's supporters are angry and want Justice Now.
Soooo...I suppose this issue will be resolved by handshakes and kisses all around and everyone will move on. /sarc
'Restitution'? To who? The king who lost face when one of his subjects showed public disrespect by deliberately disobeying an order?
On the one hand - he's a politician and we all like to laugh at them when they get embarrassed.
OTOH - what he did shouldn't have been a crime in the first place, let alone require 'restitution'.
I kinda like the idea of pre-convicted politicians.
Syrian refugees in Canada to hit 10,000 under Liberal plan as Toronto, Montreal flights arrive
Trudeau will have a meet and greet. He and James Taylor will sing and be barefoot while they receive new immigrants.

$5?!?! Look at this la-dee-dah guy.
"This fries and gravy junk is boring. Let's go find some chicks at Union Station."
Well, that's what happens when you mispronounce poutine...
Somehow Canadian MasterChef was on my TV the other day.... and I heard at least 3 different pronunciations for it.

Are outdoor rape gangs even a thing in Montreal at this time of the year?
As if they didn't already have good reason to layer.
Who the heck wants to rape in -25c degree weather?
Uh, yeah, who?! Not me, of course!
Pretty sure the answer to that is STEVE SMITH. He's a yeti, remember?
Resettle them all in Nunavut.
Or the Yukon.
My tiger friend has got the sled,
And I have packed a snack.
We're all set for the trip ahead.
We're never coming back!
We're abandoning this life we've led!
So long, Mom and Pop!
We're sick of doing what you've said,
And now it's going to stop!
We're going where it snows all year,
Where life can have real meaning.
A place where we won't have to hear,
"Your room could stand some cleaning."
The Yukon is the place for us!
That's where we want to live.
Up there we'll get to yell and cuss,
And act real primitive.
We'll never have to go to school,
Forced into submission,
By monstrous crabby teachers who'll
Make us learn addition.
We'll never have to clean a plate
Of veggie glops and goos.
Messily we'll masticate
Using any fork we choose!
The timber wolves will be our friends.
We'll stay up late and howl,
At the moon, till nighttime ends,
Before going on the prowl.
Oh, what a life! We cannot wait,
To be in that arctic land,
Where we'll be masters of our fate,
And lead a life that's grand!
No more of parental rules!
We're heading for some snow!
Good riddance to those grown-up ghouls!
We're leaving! Yukon Ho!
Something Under the Bed is Drooling had a better opening poem.

Syrian refugees in Canada to hit 10,000
And why isn't Reason reporting on those 10,000 victims of assault and battery? Hmm?
Quotes around the arrival gate:
'Hi you! So...where the hummus and women at?'
'I don't get mad. I get rapey.'
'I demand Gore-tex if you want me to be good.'
This is cute and all, but this is a wholly different population from the migrants in Europe. These people have been stuck in refugee camps for years IIRC.
So, in these refugee camps they magically lost all their cultural identity and indoctrination?
I thought it was.
This is true because Canada is pretty strict with who it lets in.
AND THROWS CYTOTOXIC .25 CANADIAN TIRE MONEY TO BUY HUMOR.
Canada is less strict than America. It's easier to immigrate into Canada.

A bit short of the 25,000 they had promised to have accepted by this point...
They're taking longer but we'll get them all-and maybe more!
Jackie also lied to friend and crush Ryan Duffin about suffering from a terminal illness.
Someone dodged a bullet.
Oh. I was going to say that she does not have to be outed because she is a mentally disturbed person who needs help, but, if she was just lying to everyone I guess it doesn't matter.
It would have been better if Jackie's crush had been on Manti Te'o.

Speaking of the Oregon affair, there was a letter-to-the-editor in our local paper, the Contra Costa Times (sister of the San Jose Mercury News and the Oakland Tribune -- all combined they're the largest circulation newspaper in the Bay Area), in yesterday's edition. Thought you'd want to see this:
A rundown on those terrorists in Oregon
You may have heard that a group of heavily armed terrorists have taken over a federal building in Oregon. There's a lot of conflicting information on the Internet, which I have combed through to present you with the following summary.
Ammo Talibundy, YeeHawdist leader of the Moonshinehideen group #VanillaISIS, and son of rancher-squatter Cloven Talibundy, is forming a cowliphate in eastern Oregon, and has asked for help from YallQaida and BubbaHaram in their effort to enact Shania Law.
They have asked supporters to send snacks and socks, because apparently the welfare and disability checks they're all getting from the federal government are barely enough to buy the ammo needed to overthrow the federal government.
Thomas K. O'Keefe

Imagine instead he had done this wacky letter about 'those Negroes in Ferguson' or "those homos and their gay marriage'. It would, of course, never have been printed. But it appears that even in the super-'tolerant' Bay Area, you can still make fun of rural white men as much as you want.
People from dense urban centers are simply a superior form of life to the rest of us. You should know that by now. They always have the correct, forward-looking opinion on all things. It is the lot of the rest of us to shut the fuck up and provide them with food and timber, while they decide how we live our lives since we clearly can't be trusted to make the correct decisions for ourselves.
Why just yesterday I was about to string up a negro for whistling at a white woman, but thank God a yankee from Chicago with a masters degree was on hand to stop me.
I still went out and killed a few faggots afterward, though.
Did you even let him tell you his family secret? His grandmother was Dutch!

At least he spared Lou Reed.
Lou Reed was actually given 20 years as a zombie.
That would explain the Metallica collaboration.

Girl dumped for being 'fat' gets revenge by sending her ex a bar of soap made from her liposuctioned FLAB
How is that revenge? Hey, free soap and also rid of a crazy person. Win-win brother.
Depends on what she scented it with.
Placenta?
As long as it isn't lemongrass. I'm so over lemongrass scented EVERYTHING.
*quietly puts away bowl of Vietnamese Lemongrass Soup he was going to offer jesse*
I like lemongrass. There was just a brief period of time where everything was lemongrass scented.
I've made ~1.5 gallons of tom kha gai in the past couple of weeks. I have fresh lemongrass stacked in my kitchen now.
This isn't revenge, it's an honest thank-you gift for motivating her to do something about being a disgusting buffalo.
Her complexion seems to have some kind of problem, though.
She must have a penis on her face.
Well, I guess its better than dating van Gogh. Barely.

How about when losing, did you do this chant to the public school?
That's all right
That's O.K.
You're going to work
For us some day
That was also in the repertoire.
Mine did, the faculty told us to cut it out.
At my high school the favorite (later banned) chant was:
Pain! Destruction! Total annihilation!!
Which was taken verbatim from a pep talk from the basketball coach.
I played Football and Basketball for a WIAA team. Lot's of drunk, ruthless kids at every school you go to. I see no way that they'll be able to enforce this.
The bed-wetters who oversee the WIAA don't surprise me though. During the Girls State Basketball tournament, we had to tell officials to fuck off repeatedly for asking us to stop our chants in the stands.
Nothing egregious either, just yelled out "BOUNCE!" "PASS!" and "SHOT!" each time the opposing team dribbled, passed, or shot the ball. Well, that and "MOOO!" when their portly center lined up for free throws.

Saturday 17 January 2009: President 'has four years to save Earth'

Paul's Audit the Fed bill was rejected by the Senate. Sen. Ted Cruz didn't show up for the vote.

Cruz thought it was a bill to give Audis to the Fed. Foreigners sometimes have trouble with English pronunciations, after all.
Detroit Auto Show cars
The Lexus looks interesting.
Hyundai is spinning Genesis off into a separate division.
I wonder why the CNN/Money reporter thought the Volvo was cool.
The ridge line looks like a truck this year.
It actually seems to be a very useful vehicle for 80% of people buying trucks.
Of course, I read an article where in the comments the truck guys came out shitting all over it because of things like UNIBODY IS NO TRUCK, and THE SPARE IS HARD TO REACH, WHAT IF YOU WERE HAULING MULCH AND BLEW A TIRE!?
I think it is a great vehicle for people in the suburbs that like to do gardening or diy stuff.
I always loved the unibody argument. I'd call an old landcruiser or suburban a truck.
Super sporty looking as it is, it still has essentially the same engine as my Lexus LS 460. I wonder how my old-man sedan would do racing against it.
I've read that new cars are getting heavier due to safety requirements, so maybe you'd do better.
For the hell of it, can anyone run down the (on the hypothetical he wasn't born in Hawaii) difference between Obama's and Cruz's claims to be natural born citizens?
Cruz has two citizen parents who were aborad at his birth but returned to America and took up as citizens in good standing, making him a citizen. Obama's mother was a natural born cirizen and he was born in Hawaii making him a natural born citizen.
I have heard that if Obama were born abroad to a citizen mother and a non-citizen father, the law at the time he was born stipulates that the citizen parent must have resided within the US for at least 5 years after the age of 15 and therefore his 18 year-old mother would not qualify. I have not searched to verify this but the law adopted in 1994 carries such a provision, with the stipulation that the citizen parent must have resided within the US for a total of 5 years, 2 years of which must be after the age of 14.
Of course, I've also heard the reason Obama's college record is sealed is because he claimed falsely to have been born in Kenya on his admissions application. He may or may not have claimed to be Cherokee Indian on his grandmother's side.
Its actually ridiculously confusing - par for the course with US law - where the *marriage* status of the parents actually has an effect (of making it *more* difficult)
http://www.uscis.gov/us-citize.....gh-parents
In general, a Child Born Outside the U.S. is a Citizen at Birth when the Child's Parents Are *Not Married to each other at the Time of Birth*...IF
The genetic or non-genetic gestational legal mother is a U.S. citizen at the time of birth, and the birth date is after December 23, 1952
*AND*
The mother had previously been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of at least one year.
So, if his parents *weren't* married - bam! Its a shoe-in and he's a natural born citizen.
http://www.uscis.gov/policyman.....pter3.html
3. Child of U.S. Citizen Parent and Foreign National Parent?
?A child born outside of the ?United States? and its outlying possessions acquires citizenship at birth if at the time of birth:?
?One parent is a foreign national and the other parent is a U.S. citizen; and?
??The U.S. citizen parent was physically present in the United States for at least ?5 ?years, including at least ?2 ?years after 14 years of age.?
?Time abroad counts as physical presence in the United States if the time abroad was:?
??As a member of the U.S. armed forces in honorable status;?
??Under the employment of the U.S. government or other qualifying organizations; or?
??As a dependent unmarried son or daughter of such persons.?
In all case - he's a 'natural born' US citizen.
And the same applies to Cruz.
So much so that its amazing the amount of ink spilled over Obama's birth certificate. Even if you found the certificate that said 'born in Kenya' - he's still born to an American citizen parent who spent more than 5 years of her life inside the borders of the US, including at least 2 of those years after age 14.
That is, literally, the only sticking point - the only place for a gotcha! - in his whole Birther 'scandal' - how much time did his mother spend in the US prior to his birth. And its pretty obvious that it was more than 5 years.
As I pointed below you completely ignored the fact that both Obama and Cruz were born before 1986 when different requirement were in place.
In other words, if Obama had been born in Kenya he would NOT have been a US citizen at birth. Since he never naturalized, he would not have been a US citizen even today.
One is a black liberal. The other is a hispanic conservative.
You mean a mulatto liberal.
well . . if you want to get all technical and stuff
And a white hispanic conservative.
One is Team Blue; the other is Team Red.
You can read about it here.
Cruz's mother, on the other, was older (in her early 30s or late 20s) and could pass the US citizenship at birth to her son.
That's a complete misreading of the regulations.
Its 5 years in the US, *including at least 2 after the age of 14*.
http://www.uscis.gov/policyman.....pter3.html
I'm afraid it's you who completely misread it. The condition that you cite applies to children born on or after November 14, 1986. Between 1952 and 1986, when both Obama and Cruz were born, the law was different.
Watch Liz Mair battle Ann Coulter over the latter's insane advocacy of Donald Trump.
How could one be generally anti-immigration and not support Trump?
And there is nothing insane at all about Reason's advocacy against Trump. I mean it is not like Ronald Bailey equated him to Hitler or Reason doesn't run like five stories a day obsessing on him or anything.,
Nope. Coulter is the crazy one.
Coulter isn't crazy. She's playing a part, and making a shitload of money doing it because people are idiots.
I don't even thing people are idiots. She is entertainment and her readers know it. What she mostly gets paid to do is troll people like the Reason staff. Needless to say, she is very good at it.
her readers know it
I think that might be really optimistic of you to believe. I've had enough people start sentences with "Ann Coulter points out..." and end them with "and I think she's on to something." enough times that I don't believe they're in the on the joke.
lolwut
Exactly. Coulter is basically a professional troll and has made bank driving liberals into a frenzy. Trump is the same way. Their shtick is so transparent that it's embarrassing how worked up people get over them.
People love them or love to hate them, but everyone loves something about them either way. Paul Krugman is a lefty gadget of similar social function.
It can be both.
Equating Trump to Hitler is not that outrageous, although comparing him to Chavez would be more apropros.
Mair is a libertarian republican and a serious intellect from what little I read. Basically the opposite of the wailing harpy she will be debating.
Iran seizes ten American sailors.
Remember how the Iran deal was the only alternative to war? Remember that line of horse shit? And lets add in how not electing some evil war monger but instead electing someone who bows down to every enemy at every opportunity was the only way to stay out of a war. Yeah, because weakness doesn't cause wars by emboldening our enemies or anything.
Iran holds two US Navy boats in Persian Gulf
Carter, part II, Electric Boogaloo.
When does Obama invade the country with two helicopters?
I was an off watch helo controller (OS) on an ASW frigate at that time. We sat in the Gulf of Oman, 28 miles off the coast of Iran and listened on the radio. We launched rescue helos from the task force, but were called off. Damn that sucked.
Much frowned upon cadence when I was a young soldier:
"C-130 rolling down the strip
Hit a helicopter and ruined the trip"
Nations like Iran only understand power and strength. Negotiating with them, in general, is a sign of weakness. Getting railroaded into a pathetic deal that gives the Iranians everything they want, including lifting the arms embargo, while getting nothing in return beyond THE LEGACY OF A HISTORIC DEAL indicates to them that they can do whatever they want and America won't stop them.
The Iranians are aiming for maximum comedic timing/embarrassment of the Lightworker.
There are hasty edits to SOTU speech being made as we speak axing the Love My Iran Nuke deal shit.
When there are only two choices, and one is an evil war monger... you are kinda stuck.
Uh, the Pentagon has admitted that the boats were in Iranian territorial waters, meaning Iran has a legal right---if not obligation--to seize the ships to protect their sovereignty.
Of course that could be a lie to cover up an embarrassing truth but can we not jump to conclusions here?
The state of Iran is a rights-abasing dictatorship and therefore has no rights.
Is there any time you feel that ignorance of a subject is sufficient reason to avoid commenting on it?

Umm...how does that prevent future development? I dont think Hyperion understands how things work.
It might be the best thing that ever happens to that company.
The idea is that Hyperion is using the code under license, and the leak may constitute a breach of contract. Whether it actually does, or whether it would result in losing their license, I don't know.

What is this "Twitter" thing that you speak of?
Can't really call the NHS a "single payer" system. It's just a top-to-bottom run-by-government system.
Pick your nits monkey.
The point was basically that there'd be no point to this "Strike" if people could pay for treatment directly.
Norks = Totally Faking It
That is both good and bad news. Good news that they don't have an H bomb. Bad news in that if the idiot son over there is getting desperate enough to make up shit like that, it might not be long before the place implodes.
The place isn't imploding though. Limited reform has been implemented that has lifted Nork living standards. The place is almost self-sufficient in food.
It's been a few years since I was playing close attention, but 7 years or so ago the only reason people were only mostly starving was because ROK was shipping enormous amounts of rice into DPRK. As soon as it would cross the border the norks would repaint the trucks and tell the people it was a gift of food from the glorious leader. Oh, and the amphetamines. I mean, maybe enough people have died from permafamine that they can feed those left a bit better, but unless something crazy has happened recently, they aren't food self-sufficient.
It's changed in recent times. The New Boss is actually better-if you're not an insider. He loves killing the regime insiders. Libertarian Moment?
The'll be allowing emigration soon.
But why would anyone ever leave paradise?

I'm telling you, campus administration should have orientation classes that skip all the 'tolerance' bullshit and teach young, dick-first thinking males to watch out for this level of crazy.
What good would it do? She destroyed a frat and damaged the entire system without a single confirmed dick entering her.
Hence the obvious need for training.
Make it like a 1950s vd film.
Duffin didn't stick it in her. He specifically 'politely declined' to do so, in fact. This bitch was just Godzilla-level destructive in a more compact package.
You know, at this point I don't even blame "Jackie". This woman has some blatant mental issues. I blame the fucktards at Rolling Stone for seeking out and then basically encouraging her to formulate the most outrageous story she could, and I blame the rest of the media (present company excluded of course) for going along with it.
I referred to her mental illness up-thread. She has real problems, and her actions did not cause anyone to go to jail, at least. Her enablers are the bigger issue. They should be ashamed. Jackie should just be receiving a lot of treatment.
I agree. If anything Rolling Stone took advantage of her. I don't think she deserves national sham. She is clearly a nut and Rolling Stone took advantage of that.
What evidence is there of a mental illness? Is being a serial liar obsessed with manipulating people into loving you a mental illness or just a ridiculous character flaw?
There's a fine line there, it's true. But everything about this girl just screams mental illness. Whether it's a personality disorder or something more.
I have a problem with defining people who do immense harm to other people as mentally ill unless there is actual evidence of some sort of brain imbalance. What the fuck does mental illness even mean when you're using it to mean "someone who does something crazy and ridiculous?"
She's a serial liar. Is a desire to constantly make things up for attention a mental illness now? If that's the case, then what bad behavior can't be classified as an example of a brain imbalance?
It sounds like Munchausen Syndrome, no?
I'm not convinced Munchausen Syndrome exists. How is it a syndrome? It's you lying for attention. You aren't compelled to lie for attention. Even if you'd like to lie for attention you could choose not to.
Barring actual evidence that this is a compulsion people can't control, in which case it would be a disease or syndrome, I'm going to continue on the assumption it's just people engaging in bad behavior which modern society has chosen to pathologize for some bizarre reason.
I'm not convinced Munchausen Syndrome exists. How is it a syndrome?
Syndromes are things we use to describe things we don't fully understand.
I'm going to continue on the assumption it's just people engaging in bad behavior which modern society has chosen to pathologize for some bizarre reason.
I'm pretty sure that mothers that have ... 'suffered' from Munchausen Syndrome are in prison which I agree is where they belong.
By the way, I'm talking about Munchausen By Proxy.
I would think her mental issues contributed to her lying so frequently.
I was ward over a teen girl one time. She would open her mouth and blatant untruths would fall out. On most days she actually believed what she was saying. She was terrible at lying on purpose.
It can be difficult to sort out mental illness as a source of falsehood versus intent to deceive as a source of falsehood. There is a fundamental difference between someone that seriously struggles to keep track of reality and someone that is a compulsive liar.
I see no evidence in 'Jackie's case that her problems stem from an ability to discern reality (actual mental illness). All evidence seems to point to her being an inveterate and skilled compulsive liar.
Erdley completely failed at her job, but the extremity of Jackie's story was such that real mental instability would have derailed this train much sooner.
I see no evidence in 'Jackie's case that her problems stem from an ability to discern reality (actual mental illness).
To be fair, clarifying my 'assertion' below, Jackie would probably be diagnosed with a Neurosis, not a Psychosis.
She went to rape survivor meetings and told her story countless times. She told a friend she was dying. She did not just lie about the rape to Erdley. She lied about the rape to a rape survivors group, the dean, and probably everyone else who would listen. She was living that lie in an environment that not only allowed it to happen, but encouraged it.
I think she is more than just someone who tells tall tales.

I think she is more than just someone who tells tall tales.
She's someone who tells tall tales because of... who knows why for sure, but she was encouraged and rewarded at every step of the way.
I agree. My assumption is the reason she lied was because she is mentally disturbed. It should not absolve her of responsibility, of course.
Is Tommy Flanagan still President of Pathological Liars Anonymous?
Yes, along with the wife of that small Chinese man.
Also, personality disorders are not like serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia. They are more extreme personality types which still should be fully accountable for their behavior (whereas a schizophrenia patient might be so psychotic as to be unable to stand trial, due to severe confusion, delusions or hallucinations). Personality disorders include sociopathy, narcissistic, and borderlines -- who can all have their issues, but none could use their diagnosis to get out of criminal charges.

This. I think Irish is thinking that I'm suggesting that you get a pass because of your personality disorder. You don't, and if people were better equipped to recognize them... THEY'D STOP FUCKING REWARDING THE DISORDER.
I think the problem is kind of the opposite of what Irish is suggesting. No one wants to recognize a personality disorder, so every fucked up behavior is considered "valid" and should be given equal time. Had people looked at Jackie and said, "Huh, crazy bitch..." and stayed away from her, the messes she created for so many people would have been mere annoyances.
I share C. Anacreon, Paul's view.
In my firsthand experience with people in the loony bin, there's a big difference between 'clinically ill' people and the so-called "BPD's"... who mostly seem like they were just 'developmental' problems rather than 'disease'.
i.e. people who are "Sick" (mentally ill) are basically 'otherwise healthy' individuals who get stricken by some chemical bolt of lightening that fucks their gourd (*to be technical)
BPD's, or whatever that category of behavioral disorders is called... they're people who never got their shit straight to begin with. they were never normal, they are "normally"-fucking-crazy
apples, oranges.
+1 grab its leg.
BPD's, or whatever that category of behavioral disorders is called... they're people who never got their shit straight to begin with. they were never normal, they are "normally"-fucking-crazy
Fun fact, the "borderline" in BPD was called as such because it was often so completely fucked up that initially researchers considered it on the 'edge' of a full blown psychosis: schizophrenia.
Yeah, and to add: most of these disorders are adaptations to incredibly shitty home enviroments.
Basically, BPD forms out of childhood abuse and neglect. BPD behavior is a great way to get attention, which kids need to get if their caregivers dont give a shit in order to have basic physical/emotional needs met.
As adults, this stops being adaptive, but shit like this gets wedged in your subconscious as a go-to strategy- because at one point, very early, it worked and was the strategy you learned to go to again and again.
BPDs and other PDs are fucking annoying, at best, as adults, but some of this shit is a bit less "controllable" than you think because so much happens on an unconciouss or subconscious level.
Or the only requirements necessary to be the front runner for the Democratic Presidential nomination.
Hey, that's not fair. Hillary also has a demonstrated commitment to selling favors to special interests
What evidence is there of a mental illness? Is being a serial liar obsessed with manipulating people into loving you a mental illness or just a ridiculous character flaw?
My guess is, from what I've read about her, most mainstream mental health professionals would probably diagnose her with actual Borderline Personality Disorder. I'm not going to get into a knock-down dragout debate about the veracity of the Mental Health Industry-- or the pop-definitions of BPD, but that's where I'd put my money.
"Most people who have BPD suffer from:
Problems with regulating emotions and thoughts
Impulsive and reckless behavior
Unstable relationships with other people."
Cool. We've now declared that all flighty assholes with relationship problems are suffering from a mental illness.
This is how you end up in a situation where virtually every person on the planet could be described as mentally ill. Think you're uglier than you are? Body dysmorphia. Really arrogant? Narcissistic personality disorder. Kleptomania is in the DSM-V so people who steal a shitload are apparently mentally ill. 11% of people between 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.
Apparently all negative personality traits are now mental illnesses instead of just facets of humanity.
Just another aspect of some humans needing to control others.
NEEDZ MOAR ELECTROSHOCK!
Having some experience with this, what you cut and pasted is pretty surface level stuff. Most mental health professionals are looking at people who have all of those things you pasted, but at some point those 'unstable relationships (to name one example) get so unstable they somehow always automagically involve the police.
You know, the girl that is perpetually being 'date raped' by every partner she's with-- and every personal relationship she's in somehow rises to the level of the entire university system across the country having to come up with emergency policies to rectify the epidemic of campus rape, and she gets invited to the white house SOTU with a mattress on her back and is getting dramatic writeups in national news magazines. That type of thing.
Sorry dude, but that behavior "ain't normal", to borrow a quote.
Yeah, I too have know people diagnosed with BPD, and it was definitely more... pervasive, I guess you might say, than just general assholery. Everyone can exhibit those behaviors, but exhibiting them in specific ways over and over again in a repetitious pattern across the course of a lifetime despite horrendous personal consequences and despite recognizing the destructive behavior is... well, it's something. I wouldn't say it's an illness per se. But there's something there beyond just conscious behavior.
Another thing to remember is that diagnostic manuals like DSM are not intended to be used by the general public to determine pathology, any more than you should feel you know what medical diagnosis you have by going on MedScape. There's quite a difference between what a typical person might think when they read a line like 'problems with regulating emotions' compared to how a clinician with years of training and experience would interpret it. And no, this is not a 'top men' situation, far from it -- but everyone has terminology in their professions that might be interpreted differently by lay people.
Further, DSM is mostly nothing more than a manual to help you determine codes to enter on a patient's billing document. It's like a Chilton Manual for mental health professionals. Lay people give it far too much authority (which the publisher exploits when they say it is 'the bible of psychiatry', when it is anything but). It really isn't much of a part of the average mental health clinician's practice, which is almost all derived from experience and training.
There's quite a difference between what a typical person might think when they read a line like 'problems with regulating emotions' compared to how a clinician with years of training and experience would interpret it.
Exactly this. Exactly. "problems with regulating emotions" is a header to an entire subchapter describing marker behaviors etc.
Wait...arrogance and narcissism are bad?!?!
It is the fastest way to the White House circa 2008.
Exactly.

Liz Mair is pretty cool, but there is no way I am going to watch that.
I still remember the time Bo flew into a tizzy because I found some of Liz Mair's tweets funny and they were SO VULGAR, OMG HOW UNPROFESSIONAL.
I'm glad that guy appears to be gone.
I hadn't noticed he left until you mentioned it.
Bo was MNG. C'mon poeple. I pointed it out day one. It is easily confirmed by the shear amount and quality of elitist bull shit spewing forth from his gaping maw.
He could have been MNG.
I'm not sure he had it in for John enough to be MNG.
Warty pretty much went off the deep end with the socon/crypto-Republican paranoia right after Bo left, taking SF with him, so we didn't get much time to miss him. Unlike Bo though, they're usually content to end a conversation with a scatological reference or personal insult after a couple of posts instead of shitting up multiple threads with hundreds of posts over a day or more. Which is nice.

Suspected ISIS bombing kills German tourists in Turkey.

Somehow, I'm sure a wall/secure border would have saved them. Walls are magical.
Cyto, I'm not sure pointing out Turkey's problems with bombings is going to convince people you're right about allowing lots of immigration from that part of the world. Turkey's the least fucked up country in the region and they can't go a month without bombs going off in their capital at this point.
The point is that 'secure borders' can't save you. They are a red herring essentially. This is a post-borders world like it or not.
So, if walls don't work, what's the next solution people are likely to try? Maybe establish some sort of place where all the members of a uniquely dangerous population can be concentrated?
Because if you think the answer people are willing to accept on this subject is "Sometimes people just explode. It happens.", I think you will be sadly mistaken.
Cytotoxic has posted a couple of articles now which don't do his own argument any good, which I generally agree with.
He posted a link about how none of the terrorist attacks were by asylum seekers, because several of the attackers had had their asylum applications rejected. The argument seemed to be that the system worked, their applications were rejected, so nothing to see here, the bodies on the ground weren't cause by a refugee.
Are you talking about the Paris attacks?
All of the known Paris attackers were EU citizens, who crossed borders without difficulty albeit registered as terrorism suspects.[107] According to the French prime minister, Manuel Valls, several of the perpetrators had exploited Europe's immigration crisis to enter the continent undetected.[108] At least some, including the alleged leader Abdelhamid Abaaoud, had visited Syria and returned radicalised. Jean-Charles Brisard, a French expert on terrorism, called this a change of paradigm, in that returning European citizens were themselves the attackers. The Los Angeles Times reported that more than 3,000 Europeans have travelled to Syria and joined ISIL and other radical groups.[109]
link text
If this is wrong then it's wrong but I doubt it.
No, there was a discussion a while back about the history of recent terror attacks across Europe (or shit, maybe it was Canada) in general, and the article took a tone that 'hey, only yokels say that refugees are prone to terror attacks, and here's proof'. Then the article went on to detail several terrorist attacks that were carried out by refugees whose applications had been denied. I can't remember and I'm too lazy to google it. But I remember asking why if their applications were denied they were wandering about the country? The article didn't bother with those technical details.
Was the denial processed before they attacked? If so that's dumb they shouldn't be allowed free reign if they've been denied for a *good* reason.
You assume the state wants to use the resources and powers it has to provide security, and not that it wants to gain additional resources and powers by failing to provide security and exploiting the resulting fear and chaos.
Or there's the argument: "Those robbers and sex criminals weren't refugees at all! They were Muslim immigrants who have been living in Europe for years!" So much for the "Don't worry, they'll assimilate!" argument....
There's this problem for you called "numbers". There are so many more Muslims that have been living in Europe for eons (or are descended from those that have) that the denominator washes out the numerator.
Bull. Muslim immigrants have higher percentages of criminals and welfare recipients, even after generations.

Certainly not as bad as the couple of stories I read within the past few weeks about white trash ladies who literally helped their sex offender boyfriends rape their teenage (and younger) daughters. One was in C-bus, in fact. If this is a thing now, they should call it "Merkel syndrome".
Yeah, the one in CBus held down her 14 year old and 8 year old daughters to be raped. Oh for an hour with those pieces of shit. WTF is wrong with people.
And if Brownsville ever became nice, we wouldn't hear the end of it from this guy and Spike Lee about white people and their fancy dogs.

I wouldn't buy that. Not at that price.
I want to buy a clown car.
So a Fiat then? The country of origin for that brand makes the worst cars.
Yeah Zagato and Pininfarina had the WORST industrial designers. So much so the Germans ignored them.

And yes, I am looking at a Fiat. Unless I can find an Alfa GTV6 at the right price.
I have no personal experience behind the wheel but I have yet to see a Tesla driver who wasn't an absolute pussy bitch in traffic. It's like the opposite of the BMW stereotype. I imagine the AWD Tesla with reasonable tires would drive as well as a powerful Audi in the snow, which is to say, fantastically.
Yeh, good point. Was just curious.
Tesla Model S 'D' packages have AWD; they are great in snow, electric motors are called 'traction motors' in railroad world for reason. RWD ones are squirrelly like any hi-po car with wide performance tires is going to be, however they are still better than average.
One area where Teslas have issues in cold are impacts on battery behavior - not all of it negative. Another oddity is cabin in cold environment; think electric space heater with computer-case fans, and all the weight-savings/thin materials becoming apparent noticing how fast said heat seeps out the vehicle.
If you want a car that runs on batteries, go to RadioShack.
Boom.

The end of gaming piracy? HELL YEAH
http://business.financialpost......hats-great
why would you care one way or the other?
1) Piracy is morally offensive.
2) If PC games can't be pirated, I believe that will hasten the end of console gaming.
Certainly never went the other way when PC piracy was easy and console piracy was harder.
Anyway, moderate piracy has some hidden benefits -- it helps introduce people to certain series or gaming in general at low cost to themselves, causing them to try things they might otherwise have not, and to become paying customers later (or if not, at least to provide free word-of-mouth to other paying customers).
This is particularly true of segments where the main reason for piracy is a temporary lack of money. If your broke ass teen or college student pirates or doesn't pirate, it doesn't matter for the immediate bottom line because there was no real opportunity lost. However, if losing access causes them to develop other hobbies, a lot of money might be lost in the future when they're no longer so broke; contrariwise, getting them into the scene might make loyal, paying customers of them once they're grown up.
When I can't demo a game on PC, I will tend to try it out before I buy on steam. I would love to have an hour or two demo before I spend that much money on a game that's sub-par *cough* battlefront *cough*
The idiot says health care should be free.
Your stupid Canadian website won't load.
So now that I can read the damn thing, it looks like they've managed to frustate, but not end, piracy for at least a month after release. Which is pretty impressive, as far as these things go, but isn't "the end of gaming piracy" practically speaking.
However, I'll be interested to see if developers and publishers start recouping some of these legendary lost profits.
Pentagon: 2 US Navy boats held by Iran but will be returned
They're just borrowing them. We're pals now, and pals lend each other stuff.
If it's true that the boats were in Iranian waters than Iran actually responded the way any nation would. Not an act of aggression.
The state of Iran has no rights.
This is among the more bizarre and senseless things you've ever said.
States either "are" (recognized) or "are not" (unrecognized). Governments choose which states to recognize and how to treat them (see: iran vis a vis israel) based on purely political relations, not based on any abstract concept of 'statehood rights'.
People have rights, but those rights are not magically contingent upon their state of residence.
The people of iran (to at least some degree) have willingly granted authority to the current government. If you think their government is illegitimate, that's nice - but their opinion matters far more than yours. What you said basically makes no sense.
What you said basically makes no sense.
So, it's a normal Cytotoxic comment?
I'm a lot less concerned with the boats than I am with the crew.

She's probably aware of it, but I'd bet all the way up to $25 that she's got the facts surrounding it muddled. Her idea of it probably goes something like this:
Right wing, small-government activists clobbered the German Democratic process and came to power, drastically slashing budgets and taxes and promoting their radical so-called "individual rights" movement. Their calls for limiting the state were an obvious racist dog whistle, allowing them to herd Union Activists into camps, effectively shutting down the burgeoning labor rights movement in Germany, kicking off WWII which led to the occupation of Paris' forward-thinking Left Bank.
