Obama's Final SOTU Is a Dud, Like His Presidency
Domestically and abroad, he has set more fires than he put out.

President Barack Obama can cross off his final State of the Union address (full text) off his bucket list. How to measure the disappointment of this last performance, which so neatly mirrors the disappointment of his time in office.
He promised a short speech but then droned on for what seemed like a hell of a long time. He said he wouldn't give a laundry list and instead just sort of dumped laundry on the table. There were feints toward the sort of optimism—the hope and change—that energized his original victory, but nobody in or out of the Capitol was energized by it.
We live in a time of extraordinary change?—?change that's reshaping the way we live, the way we work, our planet and our place in the world. It's change that promises amazing medical breakthroughs, but also economic disruptions that strain working families. It promises education for girls in the most remote villages, but also connects terrorists plotting an ocean away. It's change that can broaden opportunity, or widen inequality. And whether we like it or not, the pace of this change will only accelerate.
Thanks for the news, Mr. President, and the balanced view of good and bad. But really, what have you done to make America a freer, better, more prosperous place? Mass surveillance of citizens (including a secret kill list)? Layering on huge new sets of regulations and bureaucracies? I'm just not seeing it.
When it comes to foreign policy, what are we supposed to think? The world was in flames when Obama took office, but he's done next to nothing to starve them of oxygen. Indeed, he's exacerbated them in North Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East, where his improv line about Syria years ago contributed to a huge and destabilizing refugee situation. He had the absolute balls to mention his supposed success with Iran even as that country earlier today took 10 American sailors in custody today.
The plain fact is that seven years into Obama's presidency, fully two-thirds of us think the country is heading in the wrong direction. That's not all Obama's fault. As bad as his approval numbers are, they are better than Congress's. But Obama's concluding calls for civility and compromise are laughable in the face of his and his party's actions.
Democracy does require basic bonds of trust between its citizens. It doesn't work if we think the people who disagree with us are all motivated by malice, or that our political opponents are unpatriotic. Democracy grinds to a halt without a willingness to compromise; or when even basic facts are contested, and we listen only to those who agree with us. Our public life withers when only the most extreme voices get attention. Most of all, democracy breaks down when the average person feels their voice doesn't matter; that the system is rigged in favor of the rich or the powerful or some narrow interest.
Too many Americans feel that way right now. It's one of the few regrets of my presidency?—?that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better.
There's no question that the Republicans are awful in their ways, too. But if the best that Obama can do with the end of his time in office in sight is to invoke the hope and change he originally ran on, he must be judged a failure. Yes, he passed a "transformative" health care bill that is not only predicated upon an archly coercive individual mandate but that is failing to deliver lower prices and already falling apart. He has set more fires around the world than he put out and has presided over the slowest economic recovery since World War II.
The speech he gave tonight was a rough draft for the presidency that he might have begun in 2008, if only he wasn't so busy laying the groundwork for his own lackluster performance.

The world was in flames when Obama took office
It was? The lid was on the pot in Iraq. The situations in Ukraine, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Egypt, Korea, etc were not in crisis mode.
and Russia was relatively passive, Iran was on the verge of a democratic revolution, and China wasn't building islands in international waters. But you don't get invited to the right dinner parties if you acknowledge that Obama alone is responsible for this mess. Remember that, like Instapundit constantly reminds everyone, Obama and Biden were bragging about Iraq as recently as 2010.
Oh, for pete's sake! The "cocktail party" theory of, well, stupidity.
He said 'dinner party'. Get your facts straight!
This has been the narrative for a while. Iraq was just *this* close to becoming awesome. Then Obama.
Lulz.
Why were he and Biden bragging about how cool Iraq was then?
Fist
Bump
It.
"Thanks broz.."

Picking on the black guy. *Shakes head*
Damn right. Mocha Stalin should get a pass.

Is it possible he's deluded enough to not realize that he himself has done all this?
No its deception. This asshat did everything he could to stir the pot.
Who cares? Personally I don't give two fucks about democracy. All I want to know is do we have a government that protects my rights rather than abusing them. I could care less whether the majority of people want that too. We need to stop fellating democracy. There is nothing noble about doing whatever the majority wants.
Poignant, my friend. You've even altered my perspective a bit; high praise for an internet comment. *tips hat* Too often have I defended democracy, when I simply want that which you have listed; I don't rightfully care anymore which shoddy government vessel sails me to greener pastures (if they exist). There is indeed nothing intrinsically noble about majority rule -- it's just an epic game of king of the hill with a high body count and smug, self-serving upper echelon.
Indeed, democracy is probably the worst form of government there is. Not for nothing did the Founders of this nation deplore it. Democracy is mere mob rule. What we are supposed to have in this country is a constitutional republic, where certain ("unalienable") rights are beyond the power of a majority, of any size, to overrule. But almost nobody understands that any more, not least because it's in the interest of our rulers to suppress real knowledge of history or basic civics. It's far easier to rule the ignorant.
Fucking racist.
This article is probably one of the dumbest pieces of sh!t I've read in a good while. Who the f*ck named this guy a notable journalist?
If this administration has been a failure, how about pointing out some key reasons why? Tea Parties, 'One term President promises, general bs coming from the normal sh!t starters...you try to run a country and get something done in the midst of all that.
F*cking internet talking heads.
(Drops mic...steps off soapbox)
Bush and Obama gave rise to the Tea Party, one with military spending and the other with entitlement spending.
P.S. Playing the race card is illogical and childish.
In all seriousness, Obama-heads think the economy is never better, Obama established our foreign policy cred across the globe and that everyone is closer to being successful because of this man.
What are these people smoking?
Legal weed. Thanks to Obama. Any other questions?
Legal weed. In spite of Obama. Any other questions?
Just begged for correction.
Him not legalizing marijuana on the federal level is the worst part about his presidency, and I think that is saying something
Really... THAT'S the worst?
It seems hard to pick a worst. Shredding civil liberties, enflaming racial tensions, war in Libya... And then there is the ACA. Yup, I think we have a winner with that last one.
Yes. He could easily do it. I think it's the worst, and I know there are many things to choose from.
It's the worst, since it requires no effort at all on his part. Further, commuting the sentences for all those kids requires, what? A meeting and a perfectly legal directive.
Instead, we get "The Emperor has decreed that section X of his most recent declaration shall not be enforced on subjects above the level of Lord..."
I just love the secret murder-droning of brown-people while hiding behind a Nobel peace prize and (D)-party cred. If somebody had told me 20 years ago it would happen I would have laughed it off as tin-foil-hat ramblings.
The Nobel committee lost all credibility awarding him the peace prize for doing nothing, and Obama lost any claim to humility when he didn't return it.
Making weed legal Federally would require - Federal law - and that means Congress. This late in Obama's game the last thing he is going to admit is that he does not have the power to unilaterally change legislation.
No, it does not. We've been over this. Determining drug scheduling is an executive function. A phone call to the attorney general is all it would take.
Not sure it's the worst, but it's surely one of the politically dumbest, as the groundswell of support he would get and be able to keep feeding to his DNC masters would have been better than that of almost any other single decision he could have made. Even Eric Holder was speaking out in favor of it, unfortunately more as a parting gesture than an attempt to really change anything.
Let me just say that it's definitely not weed they're smoking.
Peyote. With a huge hit of Bullshit to move things along
Obama's DEA has been more hard assed on medical pot than W.'s DEA ever was.
I'll take your word for it, Nick. Couldn't make it past his opening remarks.
They had an empty seat next to Michelle to symbolize kids killed by gun violence. Yes, please lecture America on that while our sailors are being captured by Iran.
Somebody should have put a Pez dispenser there.
I mean, I don't like to think of actual people as being evil, but the man thinks it's perfectly alright to have an extrajudicial "kill list" of American citizens. He has no problem as the head of the entire country--and I'm going to give a tremendous benefit of the doubt here--believing that citizens exercising a right specifically enumerated in the Constitution are criminals on the basis of either ass-covering in the sense of the 1st amendment (the "Innocence of Muslims" fiasco) or outright lies in the sense of the 2nd. I don't believe the President of the US doesn't have access to accurate crime stats that I can find in about ten seconds on the Internet, and I don't believe that a "Constitutional law professor" with the highest clearance in the country didn't know that the attack on Benghazi had nothing to do with a YouTube video.
I don't understand why the bullshit-video story is not the actual focus of the Benghazi hearings. A president and Secretary of State lying to cover their incompetence while simultaneously lecturing about how free speech goes too far?
That seems like the real scandal.
Hard to see it any other way than scandals all the way down. It makes it difficult to pick out which ones to indict over first.
That dress was so pretty though
I figured a bitter angry masturbation session was a far more productive, and aesthetically pleasing use of my time than listening to more more bullshit from Emperor Bullshit the Bullshiting Bullshitter.
That's what I was doing last night... what are you guys talking about anyway? Was there a speech on or something?
Me neither! I'm saving everything for when he makes his acceptance speech for UN Secretary-General!
This speech was tonight? Why did I think this was tomorrow?
Pre-emptive drinking?
Motivated forgetting.
You confused it with the Powerball drawing?
You're Hitler?
It's always Hitler, isn't it?
Well, except maybe for the times it's Mickey Mouse, those times...
Same thing really.
Mass surveillance of citizens (including a secret kill list)? Layering on huge new sets of regulations and bureaucracies? I'm just not seeing it.
Nick, you have your libertarian moment the way you want to, he's going to have his moment the way HE wants to. Choices.
"Not my fault, bitter clingers. I didn't build that."
fucking how in the hell can you just throw that out?
When the supposed leader of one faction states that there is rancor between his party and another party, without even a gesture of taking responsibility, the only conclusion is that he is pointing a finger at that other party. Sooo, how is it that such a bold, public accusation is supposed to help fix the problem as stated? WTF? Yoo-hoo! Self-awareness, where are youuuu??
He is remarkable oblivious.
is this the Tony replacement?
It isn't lack of self-awareness, and it isn't oblivion. He knows full well what he's doing. He's framing the debate and setting the narrative. He thinks he won because he issued forth a rhetorical flourish that says "if you don't support me, you are being unpatriotic and hurting the county by ruining the political culture.
There is not one honest word in the whole thing. He doesn't believe any of the stuff about partisan anything, he just wants to get his way.
Yes, but I also think he is a dyed in the wool narcissist, and often narcissists are oblivious to their own hypocrisy.

The president's power has a face, and Obama's most fervent supporters believe he can repair the world with his face alone. Perhaps they're right, at least for the first month or two. We can only hope that he will respect the multiplicity of American dreams and the unpredictable ways in which their pursuit provides the basis for a better future.
Brink Lindsey
Alas, when it comes to domestic policy, Obama's inclinations on spending and regulatory issues are almost uniformly wrongheaded. My hope is that circumstances will constrain him from following those inclinations very far. But in foreign affairs, where the president has a much freer hand, he is the clearly superior alternative.
Jonathan Rauch
The upside: his subtle mind, silver tongue, moderate temperament, cool deftness, and magnetic charisma. The last time we saw those traits combined was in John F. Kennedy, who I think was a good president. Kennedy gets dinged by liberals for not doing much, but that was a feature, not a bug: He was personally charismatic enough to make the country feel ably led but politically shrewd enough to avoid overreaching. If I read Obama right, he may offer a similar blend of charisma and caution. The election of a black president, opening a new chapter in America's tormented racial history, only sweetens the deal.
Bruce Bartlett
Finally, there is the issue of change. Obama at least promises that, while McCain will simply give us four more years of what 70 percent or more of Americans are disgusted with. Some of those changes will be bad?Obama's tax and trade policies will probably be worse than McCain's?but Obama's approach to the war and civil liberties will undoubtedly be better.
Libertarians have to decide which is more important to them. But they must also consider that Congress will be overwhelmingly Democratic regardless of who wins the presidency. I think it is more likely that Obama will restrain Congress's worst instincts, as the Clinton administration often did on issues such as the North American Free Trade Agreement, than that McCain will be able to do so with nothing but a veto pen.
Deidre McCloskey:
One big positive of getting a fellow who taught constitutional law into the Oval Office is that he's likely (isn't he?) to restore constitutional government. The United States under Cheney/Bush stands one "terrorist" attack away from fascism. Think of a ramped-up FBI, torture of suspects, a compliant press. Come to think of it, we already have it, eh?
Obama's characteristic pose is listening. I've heard that when McCain works a room he finds out who is powerful and goes to them ("Excuse me, but there's someone over there who matters more than you"), but Obama listens in an egalitarian way. Good on him. Remember, though, that we libertarian populists had similar hopes for Jimmy Carter, and we even thought Bill Clinton was listening.
The big negative is that Obama is after all a Lake Front liberal (as Chicagoans say). Americans would look forward to higher minimum wages, higher taxes on capital gains, higher corporate taxes, and a lot of other standard-issue Democratic Party symbolic silliness in economics. I'm praying (like Barack Hussein Obama II, I'm a churchgoing Christian) that he gets a bunch of Chicago School economists to advise him. And listens. That way he won't "renegotiate" the North American Free Trade Agreement, and he might even (faint hope) try to get the Doha round restarted: You poor countries allow us to send you some stuff, and in exchange we'll drop the farm programs. As I said, faint hope.
Fantastic call on that one eh?
Richard Epstein
The Obama campaign is rich in contradictions for those who approach politics as defenders of strong property rights and limited government. On the positive side, I applaud Obama for showing a willingness to improve the procedural protections afforded to persons detained at Guantanamo Bay, and to cut back on the hostility toward immigration into the United States. And I hope that on key matters of race relations, he would be able to defuse many lingering historical resentments.
.....
My friends at the University of Chicago pooh-pooh my anxieties. They insist Obama will be a "pragmatic" president whose intelligent economic advisers will steer him far from the brink of this regulatory folly. His liberal Senate voting record leaves me no confidence in their cheery view. I wish he would back off publicly from these unwise policies. I would be thrilled if he supported dismantling even one government regulatory program. But he is, unfortunately, a prisoner of our times. The large back story of this campaign is that both parties have abandoned any consistent defense of limited government.
As an International Relations prof told me, prophetically, back in the day (pre-Obama), "Hope is not a strategy."
Your International Relations professor was a Marine Gunnery Sergeant?
In Lindsey's defense, McCain would have been even more of a dumpster fire on foreign policy and has a regulation-philia of his own. The only advantage would be that the media would be holding him accountable.
This is why I don't pontificate for a living. I could never live up to such embarrassment.
As Postrel has written, the man has no charisma, he has glamour.
without the complicit media running interference he doesn't even have that.
Agreed. It would be more accurate to say that the president has "cover".
If Obama had disappeared from the political stage after a couple of years, perhaps we'd be celebrating him too. Unlike JFK, Obama has to live with the consequences of his incompetence.
That's true for most people we build statues and monuments for.
I would suggest the arrogance if this speech is only outdone by the arrogance of his entire administration. I'm sad people vote for this guy twice. I'm sad it's actually going to get WORSE with whoever wins the next election. How is that even fucking possible?

Dude, because fucking people are fucking stupid. Gaagh. I hate myself for typing that, but it's true. My wife is a genius, like an actual genius. And she actually believes that if you just elect the right people and pass the right laws utopia results. Like it's just a matter of creating the right system and picking the right people.
"What about people who disagree?"
"Well, fuck them."
"Where will you find these people if the population you're picking from is too imperfect to live without government?"
"Umm, valrjgerjghreg."
"Don't you think the potential exists for abuse if you create a government with the power to enforce its will and simply depend on the right people to always be in place to stop it?"
"No, because the right people will eventually be elected."
"But if people can be trusted to appoint these governors, why can't they be trusted to govern themselves?"
"Because people are terrible, and stupid, and immoral."
There's no rationality here. We're dealing with a society that has been fed the lie for a century that government is a magical elixir which ennobles its membership and creates perfect solutions, in contrast to a private sector (which means people, by the way) who are hopelessly mired in self-interest (which is a bad thing) idiocy, and self-destructive greed.
Well, if there is a way to get to what she expects there will have to be better motivations. Like concrete, measurable performance criteria with a firing squad waiting at the end of a fixed period of non-performance below a specific rating. You want to hold the reigns of ultimate power? Then face the ultimate consequences.
Book smarts != reason (drink!)

I encounter these people in the business world all the time. "If we just have the right procedures in place...." It's not a matter of "rationality" so much as "experience." It's always easy for people to say "Well, it could be done faster, better, strong, and with nuclear powered arms!" than it is to actually implement.
I've let a few of them follow through with their wishlist on a small part of the organization to test their theories. Before and after, I compare productivity, efficiency, and output and it's always fallen. As the reporting numbers begin decreasing, they get more and more totalitarian regarding their ideas - It's not that the human person can't be 100% efficient 100% of the time, it's that they are obviously trying to sabotage his/her perfect idea! On top of that, they fear for their own jobs if they can't produce. It creates a lot of stress for them.
At the end of the experiment, they learn and grow and make the organization better from their experience. (Except for one guy, who snapped and sucker-punched a supervisor. Hopefully, he did grow....but he did it elsewhere.)
I've worked in IT for many years now, and run into similar thinking. The ones that crack me up are things like... People can't be bothered to read documention or status reports. So mangers decide we need to change to a different documentation system, because that will somehow magically fix things. A few of us started to push back on the last move a couple years ago.. Since it was the 4th or 5th move, without any improvements, and each system being more convoluted to use without any actual gain in features.
I actually told a boss once, who suggested podcasts as a magical solution, that unless he was willing to actually fly us to each office site and scream said podcast data at the people, it wouldn't matter. If people can't be bothered to read a page or so of data a week or so, changing how said data is presented isn't going to magically fix it.
It also leads to things like PSAs for things like fatherhood.gov that seem to imply that without the gov't telling men how to be fathers, that the human race would die out. Or something. Every time I hear that damn thing when I'm streaming local radio in the morning... Guh.
Ironically, ignoring that it has been mostly idiotic gov't involvement that has driven up the number of children raised without a father in the household.
The event may have been a dud but the comments around the web made it worth while to stay up. Obama's not even the hero we deserve anymore and the internet can't wait for him to hit the road.
Rather than burden my conscience with the SotU bullshit, I watched In The Loop instead.

Toby Wright: [looking at George Washington monument] See that? Pull that out, America deflates.
Malcolm Tucker: Yeah, it's very easy to mock. The closest you'll ever get to one of those is buying a fucking Toblerone. I'll wait in the car.
Simon Foster: So what are we going back to, apart from a nice cup of tea and some knife crime?
Toby Wright: Constituency surgery in Northamptonshire.
Simon Foster: Oh, great. Meeting my constituents. It's like being Simon Cowell, only without the ability to say, "Fuck off, you're mental".
Karen Clarke: What's going on there, Simon?
Simon Foster: It's... It's departmental business. It's about a wall.
Karen Clarke: Oh, Gaza?
Simon Foster: Uh-huh.
Karen Clarke: I'm wondering where you were in committee, Simon. I called for back-up and you sat there like a dumb sack of shit. Only maybe worse, because, actually, on a molecular level, shit is probably fizzling with energy.
"shut it, love actually. I am tired of your Oxbridge pleasantries."
Irate Constituent: [angrily] I'm fucking ZEN.
"The United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period. It's not even close," he said. "I have tried my best to fix that. The future doesn't belong to those who chant 'USA'! They didn't build it. Who built those roads for their F150's? Who gave them health insurance! Government works dammit! Bow down to its power bitches. Don't make me drone your ass."
That's the best translation of what Obama true thoughts and beliefs are.
Worst president ever? I can't think of one worse, but fear the next one will be. Given what voters are voting for, I don't have any hope for any good change.
You can't have freedom (and the prosperity that comes with it), unless you are first willing to give it to others. And it seems most people are voting for politicians who promise to steal for them, a lot of them not even knowing it. We'll continue to have less freedom and less prosperity the way it's going. The only ones who will prosper, will be the ones winning elections.

WW1... A disastrous and senseless war. Wilson put socialists who opposed it and him in jail while the generals butchered thousands. He's at least as culpable as LBJ for the number of body bags who came home during his watch.
Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, LBJ, and Nixon were pretty awful.
If there were a Mount Rushmore of worst presidents ever, I figure it would be Obama, LBJ, FDR, and Wilson.
"He had the absolute balls to mention his supposed success with Iran even as that country earlier today took 10 American sailors in custody today."
Not to mention that he's even now trying to bring back the sanctions over Iran's missile program that he just traded away for magic beans.
He's a laughing stock. Seven years in office, and he still doesn't know what he's doing.
This Iran sailor situation reminds me of when the Chinese did that naval incursion in Alaskan waters while he was in the state recently. It was just meant to embarrass him. He's a laughing stock everywhere in the world outside of progressive strongholds here in the U.S. And don't make him threaten you with a meaningless red line.
Barack Obama isn't fit to run a hot dog stand. He's so incompetent, I wouldn't hire him to mow my lawn.
Sometimes I wonder if it pisses Putin off to be matched against such a total amateur after honing his skills for decades. He is at the peak of his career and his opposite in the US white house probably has a globe on his desk to figure out where countries are when he reads something in the newspaper about one he doesn't remember.
..oh, yeah, after first looking through his cheat sheet to see if it is a country or a city.
Yeah, man, we should blow them out of the water! Do you think the reason Iraqi nationalists were shooting and killing American soldiers was because of our freedom?

Sure, shtibag. Lefties like you supported it for years.

Have I told you what a pathetic excuse for a human being you are? And that your fave lying asshole in the WH is at least as much a war criminal as Bush, not to mention the lefties JFK and LBJ.
Please pay your mortgage; honest people are sick of supporting leaches.
No, but I can easily imagine you are such an ugly person in real life.
You really believe in that "sins of the father" shit, huh? I didn't think I could think less of you but I guess there is always room for that.

Yeah, you can imagine how shitbag would respond if someone pulled that crap on Obo's kids; he'd be SCREAMING!
Oops; missed this:
" a President who pulls 140,000 troops out of Iraq a warmonger."
And then starts two or three more wars? That sort of a warmonger?
"Maybe it's PTSD."
Maybe it's lefty derangement on your part; is that a disability? Or just fucking stupudity?
These guys are right-wingers? Who knew?!
I'm not surprised that you can't post a link, given that you are one pathetic excuse for a human being.
Fuck off.
Sevo, really... People like you fought for my liberty. It was really vital for my freedom that uncle Ho be prevented from sending supplies to the Cong. So, thanks for that.
american socialist|1.13.16 @ 1:41AM|#
"Sevo, really..."
Fuckface, really, people like you are a pathetic excuse for moral agents that humanity hopes to achieve.
Please place your children with people who have some concept of morality and please, please consider suicide.
The world will be a better palace
Sevo,
Don't feed the trolls, and thank you for your service. AmSoc epitomizes the type of person that lets their government trample on the rights of the people.
" It was really vital for my freedom that uncle Ho be prevented from sending supplies to the Cong."
Full points for both ignorance and mendacity. You can stop now.
Methinks AmSoc would hesitate to be such a fucking poon if ever faced with the prospect of meeting Sevo face to face.
Keyboard warrior would get his attitude adjusted real quick.
What a stinking pile of excrement that speech was. I may be alone on this one, but that would just mean that everyone else is a dipshit. He erected enough straw men to make his own version of the terra-cotta army. Most things he took credit for happened in spite of his policies rather than because of them. And the preachy version of red-meat-to-the-base political stump speech.... in a state of the Union?
He's got balls, I'll give him that. To stand there lecturing the republicans and the half of America that nominally supports them on being open to opposing ideas and reducing the partisan rancor ..... all while castigating them for not supporting his policies. And with Paul Ryan sitting there having just given him everything he wanted in the budget. Yeah, how'd that work out for ya, Ryan? Make ya any friends?
It just didn't stop. Standing there preaching about how we can't just bomb our enemies and how we have to learn the lessons of Viet Nam and Iraq..... having just fucked up Libya and Syria without even a legal fig leaf.
And did he really wrap himself up in some dystopian version of the flag and then claim that the reason the world respects us is because of our diversity, not our might? Did that really happen, or did I flash back to a groundlings class? Really O.? We really gonna go with "they respect us for our diversity"?
I don't care if you are full-in on team Obama.... that was an embarrassment.
An apt assessment
BO "This grass, you didn't grow it."
KS "Dammit, Barack, can't you even get the lawnmower started?"
BO "Look, the last guy here left this place like this. I've only been here a little while."
KS "Seven years is plenty! Look at the lawn, dog shit everywhere, it's a mess!"
BO "There are some new health and safety regs that just came in. I'm not sure I can dispose of that crap."
"He had the absolute balls to mention his supposed success with Iran even as that country earlier today took 10 American sailors in custody today."
Hahahaha... Watching right-wingers go ballistic over a man who avoided wars in the Ukraine, Syria, and Iran is a nice past time. Psst, Nick, they're going to release them. It's ok. Imagine if we didn't have a deal with them. I say peace is better than war.
Nick, when did you join the Project for a New American Century? 2005?
Wow! We're supposed to be impressed when Obama DOESN'T get us involved in wars on the other side of the world? - which is to say that we were supposed to expect that he would have gotten involved otherwise?
Hey, he kept us out of, uh, New Zealand! Commie-kid is impressed! 'Cause commie-kid is an imbecile!
He doesn't want to wave the sabre like Nick Gillespie-- a libertarian-- does with Iran. Isn't it nice when cooler heads prevail?

"He doesn't want to wave the sabre like Nick Gillespie-- a libertarian-- does with Iran. Isn't it nice when cooler heads prevail?"
Cite missing, shitbag.
Given the current state of American politics? I'd say not starting a major land war in the ME is a major accomplishment. He is one of the most dovish figures in American politics. Before you say it... I know, I know... French war planes over Tripoli and advisors to the Kurds prove that Obama is a gun-waving, saber-rattling militarist. He's the 2nd coming of Attila the Hun, really.
Mentioning the "current state of American politics" without giving blame to the head of one side of that issue is about the level of disingenuousness I was expecting from you.
american socialist|1.13.16 @ 12:47AM|#
"Given the current state of American politics? I'd say not starting a major land war in the ME is a major accomplishment"
Given your abysmal stupidity, shitbag, I'm sure you'd grab any goddam strawman you can find in the hopes of justifying the pathetic actions of that lying POS in the whitehouse.
There isn't one subject, other than sucking D cock, that you've posted about here that suggests you have any expertise at all, and this doesn't help.
Let me add: Fuck off, slaver. And please pay your mortgage so honest people don't have to support leaches like you.
First of all "american socialist" gets this one completely correct. And secondly even if he didn't you don't have the right to use that kind of language. About which I would say first of all that you know you're wrong which is why you resort to it, and secondly your anger and belligerence kinda proves his point - Obama is relatively dovish despite continuous pressure from the warmongers.
"impotent" and "unwilling" are two different things
He has no problem drone-murdering people when there will never be any splash-back on his own boots. When it involves sovereign states that can act on their own he never quite knows what to do.
As for Am-Soc - he just goes along with the MSM in not giving Obama half the blame for not trying to work with assholes in the GOP to get anything done. Obama likes to keep things polarized so he can claim his opponents won't deal with him rather than actually trying to do something about it.
Fuck off slaver!
you don't have the right to use that kind of language
I suggest you acquaint yourself with the first amendment. And then fuck off, dickhead.
And you don't have the right to use it either. Of course, you can try:
Fuck off slaver, and your caste system too.
While not starting a war for any reason is generally a good thing, it doesn't count as a personal accomplishment if it is the result of indecisiveness and incompetence, as it is in Obama's case.
The Vichy French avoided WWII as well. By that measure, Obama's a veritable statesman.
I understand that you're just a troll. But you're also an uninformed, mendacious troll. Obama has caused more crisis than he has avoided.
The Vichy French were a rump government of a defeated country. We have the strongest military in the world.
What crisis?
Lybia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan. And he exacerbated or failed to mitigate: South China Sea, North Korea, and Ukraine. Am I missing some?
This is the president who told Russian president Medvedev that he could capitulate much better once he was re-elected. Regarding the ME, Obama seems more aligned With our enemies than with the USA. Can you say Iran?
Why don't you list all the other 200 or so nations and territories Obama "avoided wars with"? Heck, even Hitler and Stalin "avoided wars with" dozens of nations!
You mean we didn't orchestrate a coup in Ukraine? We're not elbows deep in Syria? We're not continuing to screw around with Iran?
Tell Mr. Roarke and Tattoo that we said, "Hey."
Nick Gillespie is literally the personification of impotent white male rage.
This article doesn't make sense to me. It's like Colgate complaining that everything Crest does is wrong and stupid. What? OK.
BTW, the SF Chron features a head with Obo stating:
'America is the most powerful nation on Earth. Period.'

Oh, well!
I'll bet commie-kid is wetting his pants.
Can I get some more jumping up and down with your thumb in your mouth and a poppie in your adult diapers from right-wingers. It's delicious. That bad Obama is a scary monster.

Can we get some more grasping at straws, hoping someone is as stupid as you, hoping that your fantasies might confuse those who have a grasp of reality?
Well, no we can't. You're a slimy lefty, grasping at straws in the hopes of apologizing for Bush 3, and you been busted.
Fuck off, slaver.

Donald J. Trump ?@realDonaldTrump
The State Of The Union speech was one of the most boring, rambling and non-substantive I have heard in a long time. New leadership fast!
Awesome, Donald trump! You guys... It's time. You know you want to.
So if something is neither red nor blue then what color is it?
I think Obama is an astoundingly good President, but I'm neither registered as a Democrat nor am I going to vote for their front-runner.
And I'm certainly not voting for any of these Republican assholes that-- oh, give it a couple months-- "libertarians" will start making excuses for.
So in your view of the world libertarians are red since they aren't blue - or at least not blue enough for you. Real bright conclusion there.
No, I'm saying that most libertarians these days inhabit a low-rent district of the ideological Right. It wasn't always like this. For Pete's sake, Murray rothbard was writing articles about the superiority of the Soviet Union in the 70s.
If libertarians are really interested in limited government maybe they should take a look at the major candidate who is pro-choice, for gay marriage, for immigration reform, voted against the Iraq War, and has repeatedly voted to cut military spending. But, sadly, today's libertarian seems more interested in the tax rates of billionaires and the right of individuals to carry a concealed bazooka. I say there's more to life.
Attempting to discuss anything with you is a waste of time. You invoke a point from the 1970's as if that wasn't 40 years ago (ie - is irrelivent to the discussion). You pretend that "ideological right" means anything like it is supposed to. You ignore that most people here have no interest in 1) Trump or 2) in supporting any GOP candidate (other than Trump) EXCEPT as the only offered alternative to HRC.
Your arguments about historical issues are so mendacious and skewed/fractured that it would take volumes to bring the discussion back to something which could represent reality. You only show up here to troll people and I am frankly disgusted with your disengenious attitude.
Your comments amuse me, "american socialist" full of retarded, ass backward drivel written by somebody who only finished third grade. Yeah your a fucktard, control freak and not a very good one at that. Anybody who thought Nobama "was a good president" has to be king of stupid. You got the crown, buddy. If failure in your topsy turvy world means "success", than your right.

Shitbag, I'm sure you can find someone to argue with about Trump, but in your stupidity, you think a libertarian might.
That's OK, you're not real bright.
I don't think Obama is "motivated by malice" or that he is "unpatriotic"; I think he is incompetent.
Wow. Has the 'rhetoric' and oratorical power subsided or what?
The Lightbringer could not lift the clouds because people are mean.
Thanks for watching Nick, I'd rather have a root canal than listen to that fucktard
"We live in a time of extraordinary change ???Change. What a strange word. I thought I could change. Really I did. But Republicans stopped me from changing because they stripped me of my moral agency. Change reshapes the way we live, sing and dance. Bowie wasn't kidding. It ch-ch-changes the way we work, and relate to and gently fondle our planet (I speak to it every night while Michelle cuts turnips for the girls' lunches) and our place in the world. Our place being the bronze medal position. It's change that promises amazing medical breakthroughs like better quality quackery, but also economic eruptions that obliterate working families during normal working hours like in Pompei. It promises education for girls in the most remote villages like Nebraska, unfettered capitalism will bring our milk in bags instead of bottles, but also connects terrorists plotting an ocean away. Or is it 11? I never was good at geography (nervous laughs in the audience). It's change that can broaden opportunity, or widen inequality, intensify diversity and broaden fair shares. And whether we like it or not, the pace of this change will only accelerate. There's no sugar coating it, oh it will speed up. This I know. Thank you. God bless yaddee, yaddee, yadda."
About eight years ago we had all sorts of ostensible Bush supporters coming forward to what a mistake he turned out to be, and how wrong they were to have voted for him or been his supporter.
I'm hearing all sorts of dissatisfaction from people about Obama, but nobody seems willing or able to admit they fucked up in choosing this guy.
Of course, many of these people are the same ones who also claimed they "fucked up" when they "supported" Bush.
Maybe they are just fucking stupid.
Or maybe they've been lying all along.
Tell it to Ron Bailey.
Libertarians are a funny lot. Bailey makes post after post that there is no limit to human capability, particularly when we utilize our imagination and couple it with technology. In fact, that was the basis of the President's speech. He said it directly in regard to climate change, and alluded to it on cancer. But because it was Obama, libertarians like Peter are here to say there are nothing but limitations to what humans can do.
Obama said it best last night on climate change... You can believe science is wrong, you can believe it's a conspiracy, you can believe there is nothing we can do about it (that surely is directed at libertarians). No one is listening to you anymore, and the effort is toward solutions.
After all, it's the end of doom, isn't it?
Meant that for Peters post, but it applies here as well.
Bailey makes post after post that there is no limit to human capability, particularly when we utilize our imagination and couple it with technology.
WTF does this have to do with government?
You are so married to the notion of cracking your opponents' skulls that you can't recognize how it stands in blatant opposition to humanism.
There are no limits to human capability, except those made by the laws of nature and men, the latter of which you shill for every chance you get.
And of course, in ObamaWorld, the "most extreme voices" are any who disagree with him. What a putz.

Glad to hear not all Libertarians are not interested in seeing the world go up in flames due to US inaction....
Nick has a Blind Squirrel moment.
I got a full time job an year after graduating from college, even though I lacked experience in the field I was working at. Then I transitioned to a teaching job at the private school. I went back to school around 2007 to get my master's degree and then the country went to hell. I've been working mostly part time and freelance since.
The "recovery" is a feel good lie. It's harder now then ever to find full time job that can support a family. Obama's low income base KNOWS this. They can see the rise of the sharing economy and the slow decline of brick and mortar business model. That's why they're desperate to squeeze higher wages from what existing jobs they're working at.
His real legacy won't be known until states have pay more for medicaid expansion and businesses have to reckon with higher wages.
Obama's Final SOTU Is a Dud, Like His Presidency read the headline.
A fair description I think.

The SOTU extravaganza is all about oratory and showmanship - in other words: bullshit - and Barack Obama excels at it. He deserves a round of applause.
UTTER. FAILURE. Those two words sum up Nobama's "presidency" he was a absolute joke, Carter was better than him. As much as you all hate it (and I do to) goodbye Nobama, hello PRESIDENT TRUMP. I know I am having nightmares about it to, change out one blow hard for another, slightly more entertaining blow hard.
