They are going to make a whole bunch more Star Wars films.
So many it will catch up to modern times.
Hello.
'Affluenza teen" arrested. (If you're like me, you have no idea what that means.)'
Ahem. It *means* he's too rich to be smart and do the right thing.
Oooh, a three-way with Fist and Rufus. 2016 was the year of the gay, or so I'm told. ;-D
"Was"? You're a time traveler? Who wins the 2016 Presidential election?
Shit. 2015. I was...distracted.
By Fist? Yeah, I heard about that from a certain worst.
Obviously squeezing one off.
A fist pump?
Are you using your whole Fist, Swiss? : )
There's nothing wrong with that kid that a good beating every day wouldn't cure.
The Star Wars/Mary Poppins crossover mashup is going to be one for the ages the accountants say.
In which we discover that the Force is created by little tiny chimney sweeps.
midicloroxians
The Star Wars fandom will desert en masse when it is discovered that midi-chlorians cause cancer.
That series had some of the stupiddest fucking names ever.
Could be worse (in that respect). Could been writ by Dave Weber and everyone's name was CaCaC or CuLaC, where C is any consonant and L is any liquid, with random H's and apostrophes thrown in for no reason.
Then there's Norton, whose names tend to be so bizarre they must have been chosen for very specific purposes. A couple times I noticed characters with names which could possibly be read as seemingly apt phrases in other languages. Then and her fondness for names with "arse" in them, like in that one series where the elfs worship the god "Arsepal".
Then there's the Dick Asston novels. Maybe that was Weber too.
It pisses me off that Avatar, hippie science fiction piece of shit that it is, is currently the highest-grossing movie of all time. So more power to Star Wars.
If that's even true why have there been no sequels? I saw the movie but don't remember anything about it but surely one could wring another movie out of whatever the premise was.
White Jesus trope.
Ferngully, basically. With CGI.
It was already a sequel of Fern Gully
whatever the premise was
hippy dippy blue eco warriors resist big bad corporo-military invaders, complete with West Side Story love angle
Um, you mean, Romeo and Juliet?
Dances with Wolves or Disney's Pocahontas but with blueskins instead of redskins.
Dances With Smurves.
According to James Cameron's IMDB page there are 3 Avatar sequels currently in the works.
James Cameron wants to live Homer's dream..
"If that's even true why have there been no sequels? I saw the movie but don't remember anything about it but surely one could wring another movie out of whatever the premise was."
No.
Heck, the command center set was very nearly identical to another set from one of his other films.
Meh. If you look at the list of the highest grossing movies of all time, you'll see that 16 of the top 20 were all released in 2009 or later. Movies didn't suddenly become super-awesome seven years ago, the price just went up drastically.
But yeah, Avatar was awful.
All the best movies were made in 1997-98. They don't call it the Golden Age of Cinema for nothing. (A certain little film released in 1982 is the exception that proves the rule.)
Con Air was a pretty good movie.
It's got nuthin' on Batman & Robin
Poison Ivy 3: The New Seduction
Let's fight!
The Rock was a far better Cage movie, and Face/Off is arguably one of his better works.
Not enough bees in either one
Agreed.
/kicks Lee G in chest while wearing bear suit
The Rock was not a 1997-1998 movie. You are such a girl.
Brainstorm and Twice Upon a Time were both actually released in 1983, not 1982.
It's a total scam not to even adjust for inflation. The top grossing movie ever is Gone with the Wind.
Frankly, my dear, no one gives a fuck.
I actually dislike Gone with the Wind. . .almost as much as Leslie Howard.
I liked Melly. She was better than everyone else but was too humble to rub it in their smug faces.
I enjoy GWTW,
It is a fairly good story, fairly well told.
It also gives a great deal of insight into the attitudes of the 1930s.
Though it is appallingly racist, one point that is often missed is that is the way black people had to behave in the presence of whites in order to avoid being lynched in the 1930s.
The Margaret Mitchell novel is the awesome. Scarlet is a complete psychopath in the novel and confirms the all the worst fears of MGTOW.
I disagree that it was "appallingly racist." It was a movie about a racist time, but for its day it was pretty unprejudiced.
Try "49th Parallel" and you might get a new appreciation for Howard.
You'll also laugh at Olivier.
Howard is fine. I was referring to his utter hatred for the film.
Frankly, my dear, no one gives a fuck.
I'm not familiar with that film. Sounds like a Merchant Ivory production.
Merchant Keenen-Ivory perhaps?
Gone with the Wind was in release for 4 years (and made inflation-adjusted $506 million during that time). Its total sales include the 8 re-releases that happened over the next 60 years. The Avengers made $623 million over 5 months...domestically.
There are other factors to consider. Don't let Hollywood hype or accounting deceive you.
The seminal gimmick to Avatar wasn't that awful. But if we're going to do films about people getting modified to live in unpleasant conditions, why not CALL ME JOE, which I think the guy that wrote Avatar should have had to pay royalties to (there was another novel from around that period that he seemed to draw every fucking other idea in AVATAR from. I can't remember the name.) or, better yet, MAN SEED, one of the best science novels ever.
Look at the inflation adjusted list, which is more meaningful.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
Titanic is the only one in the top 10 made after 1990
Avatar was an amazing technical achievement, but otherwise a POS. Unfortunately, they are making a sequel..
That's a really cool list, thanks! It shows the true movie titans.
Interesting to see The Graduate at #21 all time. Who'da thunk it?
I'm glad to see Animal House make the Top 100, as well as Goldfinger, American Graffiti, Blazing Saddles and even Rocky Horror.
I think I will permalink that site.
'Interesting to see The Graduate at #21 all time. Who'da thunk it?'
I don't know, really, but I'd put in my top five personal favorites.
hippie science fiction piece of shit that it is
If you look at it as a computer graphics demo as I did, you'll enjoy it much more. Kind of like Tron, back in the day.

National Review defends the Tamir Rice decision.
To shoot him? Yes, I guess so.
From the article:
There never was any evidence they actually shouted commands to drop the "weapon", other than the officers' word, was there?
"PUT YOUR HANDS (BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM) IN THE AIR!"
Even if they did, does 2 to 4 seconds of not complying justify lethal force on someone who does not have a weapon in hand?
Is this the picture that convinced the grand jury not to charge Tamir Rice's killers? Photo compares 12 year old's toy gun to real weapon as John Legend leads celebrity outrage over decision
So the prosecutors are quoted as saying that without the orange cap it was "functionally equivalent" to a real gun. Does that mean they think if you remove the cap it will fire bullets instead of little plastic pellets? Because it is a helluva of thing to confuse "functionally" with "visually" in the evidence you present to the grand jury.
That might be relevant if the cops had time to actually see the gun.
National Review is the go-to magazine for cop suckers.
If true, City Journal is a close second.
^This. Someone there just had the gall to claim that guy in Baltimore with the snapped spine was "accidentally" tossed around the back of the cop-truck.

David French, yes. Charles Cooke, not so much.
So, a derpbook holiday whine that was on my feed today - a friend whinging about a family debate about "who 'the libs' would support in a conflict between a gay baker and a muslim." If this was any of you, well-done. If not, up your game.
Facebook has gotten too easy. Sometimes I get tired of winning.
... bored with it, even?
To quote a genius, yes.
Indeed
Speaking of holiday wines, our family went out to dinner on Sunday. I ordered a pinot noir with dinner while my dad ordered a chardonnay.
When the server arrived with everybody's drinks, he tried to give me the chardonnay and had no idea he was giving me the wrong drink. "Uh, that's not the pinot noir."
White people problems.
Did you firebomb the place afterwards? They were sure asking for it.
OK, I can sorta see not knowing that pinot noir was red, but I would imagine that everyone knows what Chardonnay looks like (thanks, cougars!), and by process of elimination.
I have no idea who poured the wine for him.
I should have asked to see his ID. A
The bartender.
(thanks, cougars!),
DON'T YOU FUCKING OTHER ME, TONIO!
jk, I don't drink chardonnay.
It happened to me once or twice on a plane when I asked for a zinfandel and a flight attendant couldn't find it because she was looking for a white wine.
maybe she was thinking of "white zinfandel".
but of course, that's pink.....
Of course, she was. That's what made it so embarrassing. Also, good to know that white zinfandel is pink, I had no idea.
Hey, We Got A Signaler Here!
Come on, it would be simply unfair not to finish the joke!
S'ok, though I was joking about the white/pink topic, and I think you refer to the other sentence.
They're all pink on the inside.

'"who 'the libs' would support in a conflict between a gay baker and a muslim."'
Depends on whether you want anthrax or AIDS with your pie.
If you're like me, you have no idea what that means.
YOU KNOW DAMN WELL WHAT IT MEANS. It's the modern day Twinkie defense. (Does an older reference help at all?)
Dammit.
I claim the twink defense. (If you're like me, you have no idea what that means.)
It has something to do with your BMI, about which you are very skittish.
I'm planted firmly in the sweet spot of body mass science. It's too settled for me to be skittish.
+1 Consensus.
"Affluenza teen" arrested. (If you're like me, you have no idea what that means.)
It means that armed men in comical state-issued costumes forcibly took him from whatever he was doing, and locked him in a cage. Possibly shooting a dog if one was available. Sheesh, Robbie, do we have to explain *everything* to you?
The little jerk got probation for killing 4 people (and injuring others) while driving drunk. He skipped out on his probation after a video showed him partying and drinking. His mother aided his flight.
He faces 10 years in jail for violating probation.
I don't know what charges his mother faces, but I hope she gets at least 10 years.
That's more than a cop would have gotten.
A cop would have gotten a commendation for "driving under a handicap".
Needed that judge that can fight people with his mind.
Can someone look up the Cal score? I don't have the internet right now.
The game was cancelled due to a protest from Berkeley students that football is cultural appropriation.
(they're up 42-21 with about 6 minutes left in the 3rd)
You are lies.
Lance Armstrong beat Cal 30 - Love in Overtime. There was a major collision on lap 357. The fans tore down the goalpost.
I know what you are hinting at, but I am not going to integrate box scores into greasonable. Sorry.
Is there a game today? I thought they were already done for the season.
I mean, its the Armed Services Bowl, so same thing.
Fresh attack on named person policy after claims it will involve 'stasi-like interference into family life' by taxi drivers
THE Scottish Government's named person legislation came under attack from the right-wing press yesterday after claims that taxi drivers carrying children in the Borders will be expected to report "conversations to their state guardians".
The Daily Mail suggested this was a "stasi-like interference into family life," a reaction SNP MSP Mark McDonald said was "a giant pile of sensationalist codswallop."
Effectively taxi drivers with contracts for transporting children will be expected to alert the authorities if they hear children talk about abuse or anything else worrying. Although the Tories and the Daily Mail do not support the named person proposal, it has support from all the other political parties and just about every children's charity in Scotland.
What is this legislation?
Every child in Scotland will have access to a named person from birth until they turn 18 years old. For most children the named person will be a health visitor or a teacher. For most the new role is quite similar to roles they already perform. The governments say the named person is there to help young people who may have short-term difficulties, "as a result of illness, bereavement or moving school", as well as those with long-term condition. The named person will "be available to listen, advise and help a child or young person and their family, providing direct support or helping them to access other services." It is essentially about joining services up and trying to prevent situations becoming more serious....
A few years ago I joked that one day we'd all be assigned a bureaucrat to our homes to report on things.
I'm not joking about it anymore.
FREEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM
*gurgle.... gurgle.... exhale....*
All those people migrated years ago, mostly to the U.S.
Mel Gibson must be rolling over in his grave about this...
One could wish.
I remember when the SNP started taking off. I thought it was cool. Except for the fact that SNP is just like Labour on about every position of importance (except of course, for Scottish independence). And to call Tory press (Sunday Telegraph?) right-wing is to stretch the definition beyond coherence.
My fucking ancestors must be laughing their asses off in Hel (or for those brave ones, Valhalla) when they see what has become of their lands (primarily Britain and Germanic countries).
The pussification of the west will be our undoing. My only hope is that I live long enough to tell a prog "I told you so" as he's carted off by the government.
I told you so, you fucking fools.
Reported Robert Conquest comment when asked if a new title should be used for an updated edition of The Great Terror.
He'll be carted off by the Sharia police.
"My fucking ancestors must be laughing their asses off in Hel (or for those brave ones, Valhalla) when they see what has become of their lands (primarily Britain and Germanic countries)."
What the fuck you talking about? Your ancestors didn't even have names. Sveinn Feigi Karlssunr isn't a name. It's just old-timey Danish for "Man's good-for-nothing son young man". And Karl is still the number one name with these people, which happens to still be a word for "man" in their language, the default term for that matter in many contexts. I've also seen it used as an adjective meaning manly and upstanding, or something like that, though it could have just been the dialect. They wouldn't know what to do with a named person except rape and kill him if the instructions were written on the bottom of a wet paper sack.
What? What? Hat tip?

Donald Trump, defender of virtue, goes after Bill Clinton for mistreating women.
If only Bill was running. (Just let Hillary twit again how all sexual assault accusers should be automatically believed.)
Were.
White people problems.
This might be the only highlight of having Trump in the race. Willie should have been run out of town and especially out of the Women's Party decades ago. Looking forward to Trump just hammering him on this.

Why would they demand crickets?

Indonesia usually has a great cricket team.
No, no, no. I know this isn't true because Indonesia is one of those modern, tolerant Islamic countries that hasn't been hijacked by the few extremists.
I know, Cytotoxic has told us so.
How can you bring up such trite clickbait stories when there are far more pressing problems right here in our own country? I mean, did you know that transsexuals are routinely aggressed upon by being forced into the bathrooms corresponding to their gender assigned at birth??
Indonesia: Before I even clicked on the article I could have told you this happened in Banda Aceh. It is not indicative of "Indonesia" in general.
Also, from the pictures, it is obvious that there is a theatrical element to this punishment, and part of that requires that the girl "scream in agony" to convince everyone she's been thoroughly punished. It's part of the culture.
While I am certainly against any attempt to censor the internet (whatever that actually means in real life), I think Greenwald is being way to hyperbolic. Shit like this doesn't help get the slightly libertarian-leaning Rs to our side. And yes, any threat to free speech is a long term threat to ALL free speech, but that is just counter-productive.
"Sure, you're right in every respect, but you go too far with it!"
I agree with you. I am all for free speech, but there should be some limitations.

Bay Area Job Growth Slows After Minimum-Wage Hikes
...The pace of hiring in the leisure and hospitality sector fell to a five-year low for the Bay Area last month, Labor Department data show. Job gains have slowed to less than half the rate that preceded Oakland's and San Francisco's adoption last spring of the highest citywide minimum wage in country.
After rising close to 5% a year, hiring at restaurants, hotels and other leisure sector venues rose just 2.2% from a year ago in November. Meanwhile, in the rest of California, where the minimum wage is generally $3.25 below the $12.25-an-hour level set in Oakland and San Francisco, leisure and hospitality employment rose 4.9%.
The data suggest potential employment headwinds from the higher minimum wage, which jumped 36% in Oakland and 14% in San Francisco. On top of that, Oakland's minimum wage is set to rise to $12.55 in January while San Francisco's will jump to $13 in July....
That can't be true. Why, I am assured by progs that minimum wage increases lead to prosperity for everyone. And free ponies!
If one can't make a living wage, is employment worth it at all?
That's just a bunch of Randroid, Teathuglikkkan talking points. Smart people assure me that if the minimum wage affects employment at all, it will boost employment in some mystical way that the unwashed masses cannot hope to understand.
Please, no Krugmanomics when I have just had lunch.

Last time I flew through SFO, I noticed a benefits surcharge listed under the prices. Maybe there is a limit to how much can be rolled into the prices.
My one and only job in SF was an entry-level hotel job - it paid well over minimum wage, like several dollars more - which tells me that raising it has a ratchet effect some ways up the ladder because there is no way anyone in SF is making the actual minimum.
Never heard of Mark Salling.

That was my first thought. "Oh, the femme blond guy, I guess? .... Wait...."
The most implausible part of this guy's story is the part where he's accused of having an 'ex-girlfriend'.
He's kind of a hippie nutbag. I'm sure he fishes with a wide net.
Hasn't SoCal evolved symbiotes who sustain mostly on proximity to celebrities?
Glee aside, from various pictures I saw he actually looks like a world-class (and hetero) douchebag to me.
Union Posts Names of Non-Members, Urges Shunning
Local 412 of the United Auto Workers has placed a spotlight on employees who have chosen to exercise their right to not support the union financially under Michigan's right-to-work law. In a recent newsletter, the local urges co-workers not to share "tools, knowledge or support" with individuals who chose not to pay union dues.
It then lists the names of the employees to be shunned....
Unions, proving how classy they are once again.
Other than FYTW, how is that not a blatant violation of current labor law against coercion? Unions file complaint after complaint if an employer used similar tactics.
But you see, it's different because evil corporations are out for a profit, which automatically means that they are seeking to bring death and pestilence upon their fellow man, whereas unions are benevolent organizations that faithfully represent the worker and always have profits- er, the workers' best interests in mind!

As long as we're flogging the TSA today...
News radio informed me this morning on the way to work that my local airport (Denver International) had 1 1/2 to 2 hour waits in security lines, resulting in a massive number of missed flights. Turns out TSA was "taken by surprise" by the volume of travelers, and didn't have enough security lanes open. Yeah, the holiday season really snuck up this year. Doesn't TSA have access to the number of flights departing a particular airport daily?
Here we see another example of the perfect flow of information that makes government better.
It's more than just the number of flights. There's been a lot of cancellations and missed connections due to weather in the Midwest and TX so standby passenger volumes have increased enormously. Additionally, passengers that would have transited Denver without leaving the terminal may be overnighted in a hotel, which then requires screening to get back into the terminal.

fun etymology facts
-the word puppy comes from the French word for doll
-the word idiot originally meant a free man in ancient Athens who was not allowed to vote or hold office
-the word amazon means breastless in Greek; supposedly the legendary women warriors cut their breasts off so they could be better archers
-the word larceny comes from the French word for mercenary; mercenaries of the time were notorious thieves
side note: once while waiting outside the chow hall at Fort Sill, I saw a bunch of soldiers singing the "all we own, we owe" song from the Wizard of Oz. I laughed and a drill sgt yelled at me.
the word idiot originally meant a free man in ancient Athens who was not allowed to vote or hold office
Now being an idiot is the primary qualification for government office.
That was the first thought that came to my mind as well.

I have long suspected that the only reason most progs care about gay marriage is because it gives them an excuse to punish socons.
If punishing your enemies can't be achieved, what's the point? Oh, you thought people actually wanted to wake up to the same partner for the rest of their life?
I am telling you. I understand the lesbians. But if I was gay (or a woman) I would be down at the dock, waiting for the fleet to come in!

Brutus and his partner Nala, who live at the Drakenstein Lion Park near Cape Town, stunned staff at the sanctuary when she gave birth to the cubs just before Christmas."
I'm sorry, I thought lions were so precious that the loss of even one was an affront to humanity!
Why did they give him a vasectomy in the first place?
I'm gonna guess that the lion park has enough lions already.
And if the lion park don't need 'em, nobody needs 'em!
It was a drunken bet.

Can somebody check the Cal score for me? I don't have the internet right now...
Bane attacked and the stadium collapsed. Only Hines Ward survived.
55 - 36 Cal 1 minute left in the game.
Man, I really hope you get that Internet fixed soon so you can look this up for yourself.
It's college football? The score was 110 to 94. The defense really showed up today in this low scoring game.

ISIS = Reining In Free-Market on Sex-Slaves With Common-Sense Regulations
""Islamic State theologians have issued an extremely detailed ruling on when "owners" of women enslaved by the extremist group can have sex with them, in an apparent bid to curb what they called violations in the treatment of captured females.
The ruling or fatwa has the force of law and appears to go beyond the Islamic State's previous known utterances on slavery, a leading Islamic State scholar said. It sheds new light on how the group is trying to reinterpret centuries-old teachings to justify the rape of women in the swaths of Syria and Iraq it controls.""
Well, you have to have rules and regulations or else you'll wind up with a libertarian hell.
In the face of such mendacious, I am speechless.
"Hey Ottoman Sultans! Ur doin' it wrong!"
I was about to say that Ottoman sultans captured many Armenian women for their harems. In 1915, there was another splurge of mass rape:
link
"During the genocide, between 100,000 and 200,000 Armenian women were taken into harems by Muslim husbands and children were converted, forced into slavery, or kidnapped and raised as Turks or Kurds."
The thing about religions, I've found, is that they can and will be interpreted in various ways to such an extent that you wouldn't even think some of the sects are even the same religion. At least this is true in Christianity.
I'm not even talking about doctrine. I'm talking history. When did Saudi Arabia get around to de jure abolition? Oh, yes, 1964. And only under great pressure from the West.
I've heard that in some ME countries, I don't know if true, that people will sponsor visas for people in 3rd world countries to come work and then basically enslave them by stealing their visa. It's pretty recently that I read some stories like that. Again, I don't know if it's true.
"In Islamic law, the topic of slavery is covered at great length.[1] The Quran (the holy book) and the hadith see slavery as an exceptional condition that can be entered into under certain limited circumstances.[2] Only children of slaves or non-Muslim prisoners of war could become slaves, never a freeborn Muslim.[3] ...In addition, a Muslim slave is equal to a Muslim freeman in religious issues and superior to the free non-Muslim.[5]
In practice, slaves played various social and economic roles, from Emir to worker. Slaves were widely employed in irrigation, mining, pastoralism, and the army. Some rulers even relied on military and administrative slaves to such a degree that they seized power. In some cases, the treatment of slaves was so harsh that it led to uprisings, such as the Zanj Rebellion.[6] However, this was an exception rather than the norm, as the vast majority of labor in the medieval Islamic world consisted of free, paid labour.[7] For a variety of reasons, internal growth of the slave population was not enough to fulfill the demand in Muslim society. This resulted in massive importation, which involved enormous suffering and loss of life from the capture and transportation of slaves from non-Muslim lands.[8] In theory, slavery in Islamic law does not have a racial or color component, although this has not always been the case in practice.[9]',
"So Islam found this abhorrent practise and worked to gradually remove it."
610 to 1962* is pretty goddamn gradual.
*when Saudi Arabia outlawed slavery.
I was only off by 2 years. Not bad.

I dunno, I always have to search for the thing that goes up. It's clearly too concealable to be legal.

Santorum trying to help Ted Cruz win
http://hotair.com/archives/201.....servative/
How is that guy even still in the race?
Cruz should threaten to give him a wedgie with his sweater vest if he don't stay the hell away from him. I mean, what could be much worse than being helped by Santorum? Get Obama to stump for him?
The article was Santorum criticizing Cruz for not being willing to use the power of the Feds to push SoCon issues, instead leaving it up to the states to decide.
Santorum is a well known statist. Him and Huckleberry both would like to use the power of the state to legislate morality. They're no better than the progs.
Eh, I'd say enforcing traditional morality is better than enforcing whatever morality the progs have dreamed up this week.
And Santorum is too stupid to realize that his distaste for Cruz not being socon enough actually helps Cruz.
What makes me sad is that most socons are some level of convinced that wielding State power is acceptable if it means doing the things you want to do.
Every argument I've seen against libertarianism is premised on pitting the philosophy against unicorn government run by the right people who make the right choices with the right intentions.
Yeah, I think we pretty much just said the same thing:)
I also think that a lot of times people hide behind good intentions in order to punish people they don;t like. Not sure what drives that nature in people. It's hard to explain the WOD any other way. We're going to help people by putting them in cages and giving them criminal records? No, it's about punishing people for their vices because they can.
Yeah, it's across the board whether your talking about socons or progs. It's all about "good" intentions and the belief that they are the smart ones capable of delivering us all from our sinful and ignorant ways. The socons are a dying breed, but the puritan legacy lives on in many other forms.
"affluenza," characterized as "a lifestyle where wealth brought privilege and there were no consequences for bad behavior."
What better place to get cured of "affluenza" than in prison?
