For all the discussions about prompted by the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I've been surprised that nobody drew a line connecting George Lucas' first great triumph, American Graffiti, and the franchise that "conquered the galaxy."American Graffiti was itself a massive hit and helped to usher in an era of baby boomer nostalgia about that generation's barely completed childhood.
In my latest Daily Beast column, I argue that the first Star Wars trilogy (A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) is a celebration of the generational exceptionalism embodied by American Graffiti but that Lucas changed things up in the second trilogy (released between 1999-2005). As Lucas' frequent collaborator Steven Speilberg said while promoting Saving Private Ryan:
"It was as simple as this: The century either was going to produce the baby boomers or it was not going to produce the baby boomers." Only a baby boomer could reduce World War II to a footnote in the history of a cohort not yet born.
While most fans merely suffered The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, those movies represent a piss take on what happened to baby boomers who cut their teeth protesting Vietnam and ended up bombing hell out of the world during the presidencies of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama.
A snippet:
No one would confuse George Lucas with a deep thinker (his filmography includes such neutron bombs as Howard the Duck, Labyrinth, and Willow), but he has managed what is arguably the most ruthless and withering appraisal of the baby boom generation from young rebels to imperial overlords. The first six Star Wars movies document in imaginative form how antiwar activists became the cryptkeepers of Abu Ghraib, how hippies who called bullshit on LBJ and Richard Nixon staffed a Bush administration that sanctioned waterboarding and an Obama administration that generated a "kill list" not subject to any sort of due process.
Meredith Bragg, Reason
Even more impressive, in 2012 Lucas and his eponymous film company relinquished ownership and creative control over the franchise. The Force Awakens, directed by Gen-Xer J.J. Abrams, has opened to universally strong notices, and, in the summary of Rotten Tomatoes, "successfully recalls the series' former glory while injecting it with renewed energy."
As aging boomers such as Hillary Clinton (aged 68), Donald Trump (69), and Jeb Bush (62) desperately try to become the next president, Lucas has abdicated his throne and graciously allowed younger generations to take control of his prized possession, the most beloved and valuable property in the history of popular culture.

Oh please. Boomers who were protesting Vietnam were not the ones supporting Abu Ghraib. You come off as kind of dumb to attack George Lucas's semi-literate drivel with pseudo-intellectual drivel.
Why the fuck are we all communicating in a natural language, English, like a bunch of irrational emotive art-fags when we should be parsing our communication in pure binary in a type-2 formal grammar?
They are the party of intellectual-honesty and open-mindedness, and they are confident in the popularity and robustness of their ideas. Which is why there is no need for the media to bother covering them. Instead, i think this weekend should be spend reminding people that Darth Vader really is a bit like Trump.
Gillespie had to write his mandatory Star Wars paean, but it couldn't look too much like what the rest of the million keyboard monkeys had already filed. So to differentiate it from the rest of the drivel, he structured it around a swipe at Baby Boomers and politicians.
So I'm starting to run into HRC 'stolen data' jokes:
"what's the different between edward snowden & hrc? one of them actually DID compromise national security & the other one knows how email works..."
between 2009 and now, Obama has locked in a ~1-2hundred-billion$$+ in New 'infrastructure' (read = huge grants to states to dump into municipal boondoggles) in various forms.
There was ~$50 bn in ARRA 2009, a 5bn *per year, in perpetuity* elevated spending approved in 2010-2012, tens more under his "energy" plan for greening shit up... and more.. (in a thread a few months back we did a survey of everything over the years, some approved, some denied, and some slipped into different omnibus bulls)
And yet you can screen the usual suspects in the media and they will moan that he's never had a *specific infrastructure bill* approved because HURR DURR obstructionist republican congress
The reality of the money-pit spending is meaningless because no one *knows about it*, or cares.. therefore, just like declining gun violence, it can be ignored, and a narrative can be created about tightfisted scrooge mcducks being responsible for everyone's potholes and lack of new playgrounds and shiny new bridges to freedom.
The 'usual suspects' don't see money wasted on greenie crap as "infrastructure"; that's money 'invested' in the future of mankind, saving the planet, being wonderful, etc.
Even moonbeam's choo-choo is not seen as 'infrastructure', it's seen as another Solyndra!
Those potholes exist, because the money already taxed to fix them got spent on the teacher's unions and the SEIU; now those "HURR DURR obstructionist republican congress" critters won't vote for MORE taxes to be blown on buying more votes while promising they'll be spent on those potholes.
Fixing potholes and bridges don't buy no votes.
I linked it a couple of days ago, equally surprised, but the Chron is now less of a newspaper than a sheet offering space for pay.
The paper version now sells portions of the front page to various lefty and greenie 'news sources', so handing out a place on the e-page for bucks isn't surprising.
What is surprising is the lack of real sponsorship. "It's not surprising they're for sale. It is surprising how cheap they are."
Is tonight's debate the one where Muzlims are gonna kill us or white Menz are gonna kill us? They should wear coloured sheets so we can tell the teams apart.
I'm sorry, I was looking for Reason Magazine, but I seem to ended up on a Star Wars fansite somehow.
Oh well, at least Gillespie engaging in generational collectivism is better than declaring Bob Dylan the most influential musician of the century and leaving Firefly off the 'best libertarian shows' list.

How Star Wars Unmasks Baby Boomers As America's Sith Lords
Says Baby boomer Nick Gillespie, who styles himself as an AIDS-ridden knockoff of the shark-jumping character in the TV-knockoff of the Lucas movie of which he cites, American Graffiti.
FWIW, the characters in American Graffiti would almost all belong to the pre-boomer "lost" generation.
Blaming government action a on a single generation when there are usually three to four generations represented in congress at any time is both ignorant and naive.
Les Paul always had a gig in NYC on monday/tuesday nights that went back.... 30-40 years? As a kid I went to Fat Tuesdays in the East Vil twice in the 80s... then i saw him again 3 times at Iridium (near times sq) in the 90s ... and again about a month before he died in 2009.
Every time you went, there were always "guests". You always went to the gig not knowing who would be there. It was sort of a guitar-player's "Times Square Show" thing. There were some celebrity musicians of some sort or another every week. You would buy tickets not knowing what you might see. They'd just play whatever they felt like. The only people on the stage there who are from the actual "les paul band" that i remember are the old italian guy on the far left (who was there in the 80s) and the guy playing piano.
I saw richie sambora, dweezil zappa, Etta james, ... can't even remember who. They all showed up to worship at the altar of Les Paul. and he told dirty jokes. and every time i saw him, he played chops i'd never seen before.
I actually didn't know they were still playing *without him*. Hard to imagine. But he was an institution in NYC and a wonderful man. This is the guy i remember. A musician's musician.
Well, I saw the movie. Darth Emo just wasn't all that scary. I can totally see him turning to the dark side after having to bang Dunham the Hutt, though.
I think it's worth seeing at some point if you think of it as just another movie somewhat tied to the earlier ones.
I'm really not a fan - don't hate them but never really got into them so deeply. For instance, in watching the earlier films from the franchise over the past month with my 7 year-old, while viewing RotJ I realized that I had never seen it before. I don't even remember why I skipped it.
Don't expect so much from it and you shouldn't be let down.
Remember we can't make any judgement about Islam. That would be collectivism. It is just bad luck that every place they immigrate turns into a crime ridden shit hole.
Or Geoff and sacasmic tell us we can never condem a group, except of course other Americans who disagree with Geoff or happen to cops, those people are fucking evil.
When Muslims have the power to use violence without consequence, and have an entire legal system there to back up their illegal actions, then I might consider your point. As it is it is a false equivalency. And you wonder why people laugh when I call you Red Tony, you fallacy fellating troll.
That is right. Just like it is just bad luck that everywhere socialists are the economy is a disaster, it is just bad luck that everywhere Muslims go becomes a backwards shit hole.
You can never make collective judgements about anyone except American cops, social conservatives and progressives. Those people can be judged and condemned as a group. Never Muslims. They are beloved by all Libertarians.
Muslims are beloved, almost as great as gays. The fact that Muslims consider their religious duty to support murdering gays,is just more of that bad luck.
So every Muslim in the world supports every law in every Muslim country. Gotcha.
Know what? You've earned troll status now, John. From now on I'm going to treat you like Tony or PB: Like a pea-brained fool. You picked your hill and my respect for you has died on it.
I think it's reasonable to make collective judgments about people based on their ideology. If someone says they are a libertarian, it's not "collectivizing" to assume they support free trade, the right to bear arms, etc. So it's not wrong to say that Muslims believe the tenets of Islam, which are all in the Koran and are pretty clear.
The difficulties come in degrees. Unlike most religions, the more devout a Muslim is, the more likely he is to support or commit religious violence. That's because the Koran is simply more violent than the Bible (in large part because Mohammad was a lot more violent than Jesus).
So with Islam, you can't easily separate "the actions of the few" from the rest. The rest are supporting the ideology that forms the basis for the actions of the few, and scores of polls for decades have shown that there are hundreds of millions of Muslims who support the actions and goals of the violent "few."
