The bond for Jason Van Dyke, the police officer charged with murder in McDonald's death, has been set for $1.5 million.

That's gonna take the union quite a GoFundMe effort.

    1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

They seem to have it covered.

      1. Tonio   10 years ago

Dammit. Bonus for coming up with a link.

      2. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

It certainly creates a bright line.

      3. Ted S.   10 years ago

They're doing it on the job, based on the fact that everyone is in uniform.

      4. Zeb   10 years ago

Jesus. They don't even pretend to be anything other than a gang, do they?

    2. Tonio   10 years ago

Meh. I bet the union can come up with that.

      1. Juvenile Bluster   10 years ago

$5 says a bail bondsman is willing to do it cheap/free because of how much he supports the cops.

        1. Tonio   10 years ago

I believe that B-bondsmen usually require collateral. Without that he'd be assuming the risk himself - quite the risk to take. Now, having said that, the cop is too high-profile to try to flee, and we know the prosecution will deliberately throw the case.

          1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

For a murder bond, they usually require at least one house as collateral. At least one. More than one preferred.

          2. OneOut   10 years ago

A promissory note from the Union would probably be sufficent collateral for the bailbondsman to make an easy 150K.

This guy isn't jumping bail and running off.

            1. dan'o en barrel   10 years ago

I'd be surprised if they didn't just post the full 1.5 with the numbers that the union is accustomed to dealing in

              1. ThomasD   10 years ago

This. The union probably just brought in some sort of affidavit from one of their banks saying they put the money into an escrow account.

    3. Juvenile Bluster   10 years ago

      Afternoon.

While driving back to work from a lunch meeting today, I saw an Audi R8 (at least $175k-$200k including options) with the custom license plate "WAS POOR". Such taste in cars may drive you right back to "IS POOR", good sir.

          1. Mad Scientist   10 years ago

Some states will give you any plate you want, but will take it back as soon as they receive a single complaint. You pay either way, so...

            "Oh. Approved."

            1. sloopyinTEXAS   10 years ago

I used to have "U BOLLIX" on mine in Virginia. The plates would get stolen every time I went to Potters Pub or Penny Lane in Richmond. I had to use loctite on them after the third set disappeared.

        3. Mrs. Lemuel Struthers   10 years ago

Last year I took a pic of a guy in a Tesla. The plate said 'Fabio'.

          1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

On March 30, 1999, Fabio was involved in a statistically unlikely accident in Busch Gardens Williamsburg, located in James City County, Virginia. Fabio rode in the first car of Apollo's Chariot, a roller coaster, during its inaugural ride. During the rapid descent on the 210-foot drop after the lift hill, a goose collided with Fabio, leaving his nose covered in blood. The goose lost his life upon collision with Fabio's nose and Fabio received a one-inch cut but no one else on the roller coaster was hurt.[2]

He killed a goose with his face.

            1. Mad Scientist   10 years ago

Killing Canadian geese is a lofty goal. I will now consider Fabio to be a true hero.

When I'm wealthy, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get a Bentley and put a "My other ride is your mom" bumper sticker on it.

        It's Banjos' idea.

        1. Mad Scientist   10 years ago

That sounds suspiciously like Episiarch's idea.

        2. PapayaSF   10 years ago

In the mid '80s I took my car to get serviced, and noticed that there was a dusty Bentley in the back of the shop. Turned out it needed a valve job, and the owner couldn't afford it, because it cost $10,000. Each valve was $80.

          1. Mad Scientist   10 years ago

That comes to 125 valves. Even if it's a V12, that's still more than 10 valves per cylinder...

            1. PapayaSF   10 years ago

No, because a valve job costs more than the price of the valves: labor, head gasket, etc.

OK, according to CNN, Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood Shooter Robert Dear had both anti-abortion and anti-government views and had previously distributed anti-Obama pamphlets to a Colorado neighbor.

So, batten down the hatches for a round of blaming anti-government views for a shooting at a private business.

    1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

Just like they blamed criticism of the Family Research Council for the guy's attempt to massacre people at the group's headquarters.

      1. Bern-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

I remember that incident. Until this year, that was the only high-profile shooting/attempted shooting that was expressly political, but because the particular politics involved were goodthink, they didn't bother bringing it up and looked for more ways to place the blame on conservatives.

Hell, Finebaum seemed downright disappointed yesterday that they didn't manage to do the same to Miles as they did to Mike Leach when he was at Texas Tech.

"no exceptions for rape or incest or if the fetus has fatal abnormalities."

So, the law doesn't let you kill disabled unborn children, or allow the killing of children for the sins of their fathers?

Man, they don't let you do *anything.*

    1. LynchPin1477   10 years ago

I know those are popular exceptions but I'm not sure how they breach "citizens' human rights". Unless you think there should be no restrictions, but in that case it seems odd to single those exceptions out.

      1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

If the pro-abortion movement in Northern Ireland is anything like the movement in the U.S., they're starting with rape, incest and disability to get people accustomed to legal abortion, then they'll move right on to abortion on request.

So if I'm right, it's not "odd" at all - it's part of the process of softening up public opinion in preparation for legalizing (and subsidizing) *all* abortions.

        1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

Why do you keep saying "disability" instead of "fatal fetal abnormality"?

          1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

OK, it's *not* a disability. Sheesh.

            1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

I thought something fatal could also be considered disabling.

But initially I thought it said "fetal" abnormality.

      2. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

Really? In the case of rape, there is evidence that the woman never consented to a pregnancy, so I don't think it's hard to see why some people who are okay with some restrictions would still consider it a breach of the pregnant woman's human rights to prevent her from terminating the pregnancy.

        1. LynchPin1477   10 years ago

OK, from that perspective that is fair. But it doesn't explain incest if it is consensual or fatal abnormalities.

          1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

I don't think it's 100% coherent, and it's not at all my position. The incest thinking is that in most cases, incest is effectively rape. Especially since so many of those cases seem to involve pregnant minors. I am sympathetic to that idea.

As far as fatal abnormalities, it is a totally different argument, and I do think that even pro-life people can have a coherent pro-abortion position there. If you are talking about a fetus that is definitely going to die within hours, there is no life to protect. There is only a woman who can either terminate, or continue through an increasingly grotesque (and frequently dangerous) process.

            1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

"If you are talking about a fetus that is definitely going to die within hours, there is no life to protect."

I think you're assuming the conclusion there. Are you saying you weren't alive until you left the womb?

I know of a case where a kid charged with the murder of an old woman claimed that she was going to die soon anyway, so that should mitigate his punishment.

              1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

In any case, we've seen this movie before - the rape/incest/abnormality exceptions are sold to us as a limited exception, then once we're used to it they criticize their own reform in adequate, and they say the only way to remedy the situation is to have abortion on request.

Now, in the USA, we've gotten to the point where banning abortion on request and limiting it to rape/incest/abnormality would be an *improvement* over the current regime.

But of course prolifers have a sinster (though not hidden) agenda to ultimately extend legal protection even to the children of rapists - it's unconstitutional to execute the rapist, but somehow it's OK to execute their kids? Does not compute.

But advocates of the "safe spaces" phenomenon say this is not the expression of hypersensitive, mollycoddled youth, but rather the development of a movement that is advancing the goals of racial and sexual emancipation.

What does that even mean? Not only are they racist and evil, that can't even compose a coherent thought.

      1. wareagle   10 years ago

how does being marinated in racial and sexual identity lead to emancipation from it? Not asking you specifically, more like piggy-backing on your comment.

        1. tarran   10 years ago

I think they feel chained by their race and their gender. Like, they didn't ask to be born black, man! And they were, and it like totally chains them!

Here is the thing. Racism exists. Sexism exists. Black people do get harassed; simply because they are black. Hell, I've witnessed a couple of incidents with my own eyes!

One great option when confronted by people who don't like you and who treat you like shit is to separate or segregate yourself from them. You don't hang out with them. You avoid stores and museums that treat you badly etc.

The problem isn't that these people are feeling this impulse. The problem is that they are expressing it with the egoism of a child.

They want their 'safe' space. They don't want to make it for themselves. They are demanding other people provide them with it! They don't want to segregate themselves; they want the state to segregate everyone in a manner that suits their tastes!

Their childishness and lack of maturity perverts what would otherwise be natural and possibly even wholesome reaction to mistreatment.

"A high court in Belfast, Ireland, has ruled that Northern Ireland's extremely restrictive abortion laws, which only permit the procedure if the mother's life is in danger, breaches citizens' human rights because it contains no exceptions for rape or incest or if the fetus has fatal abnormalities."

Does infanticide become legal if the infant is a product of rape or incest? How about if the baby is going to die on its own in a week or two? So why would you expect abortion laws made on the premise that abortion is just another type of infanticide to have such exceptions?

We already enslave parents to their children's care and upkeep no matter how they came into being, it's pearl clutching to pretend it's a human rights violation to do so one month before the kids is born but not when done one month after birth.

Note this has nothing to do with if abortion should be legal or not. It's just pointing out that most people have already decided that a child has a right to care that overrides their parent's rights, even in the case of incest or rape. The only debate is what qualifies as a child.

    1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

Also, there's a lot of would-be adoptive parents out there, sometimes more than there are babies to adopt.

So there's one way to avoid "slavery."

The rape/incest exception has never made sense to me. If the pro-life argument is that the fetus is a life entitled to protection, it should be irrelevant whether it is the result of rape or incest. By granting that exception, pro-lifers bring the question of the mother's culpability into play, which only serves to bolster the feminist crowd's claims that the pro-life movement is just a front for controlling women's behavior.

      1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

If the pro-life argument is that the fetus is a life entitled to protection, it should be irrelevant whether it is the result of rape or incest.

If you're a pacifist, maybe. But being pro-life doesn't mean you are required not to care that the woman never consented to be pregnant and therefore is not morally required to protect a trespasser.

        1. Illocust   10 years ago

Trespasser implies intent. You cannot establish Mens Rea with an infant or fetus. Especially as no decision was made to either commit the crime or lead to a situation were the crime was committed.

It'd be the same as charging the guy the robber stabbed with stealing your knife, or arguing that taking your knife back as paramedics scream "Don't do that he'll bleed out!" is just retrieval of property.

          1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

I thought we were all assuming we knew the fetuses mind in all this anyway. Everyone else seems to assume it wants to be born.

            1. Illocust   10 years ago

We don't know animals minds, so we say they are unable to consent to sex. We know children old enough to talk's minds but we say they are to young to understand the full implications of their actions so they cannot consent to sex. We don't know children to young to speak's minds but we do not allow their murder or say they can consent to sex.

Also the instinct to live serves as prima facia evidence that the victim wants to live. It is up to the killer to provide proof that the victim did not (in states were Euthanasia is legal).

            2. Mickey Rat   10 years ago

The operative presumption for anyone is "I do not want you to kill me". Or do you ask of everyone you meet whether they would like to die?

Everyone else seems to assume it wants to be born.

It may not be a 'want'. It may be instinctive. There is some evidence that this is so.

      2. wareagle   10 years ago

it makes perfect sense. You're forcing the women to relive that horror very personally day by day, to see its physical manifestation. Sorry, I'm not telling some bona fide victim that she has to suck it up.

        1. Illocust   10 years ago

If the child gets adopted by the folks across the street and the woman has to see him every day, does she have a right to kill him? What if he just merely grows up to be famous and appears on every new stand? What if he's the only provider of food in the apocalyptic wasteland, is she deal so she can get food or can she kill him then?

If the kid is a somebody you can't kill 'em because their existence causes you emotional distress. If the kid isn't a somebody then killing 'em doesn't matter. So the question is are they a somebody or not, not what did their father do to their mother.

          1. wareagle   10 years ago

trot out all the what ifs you want, you're in the rank minority on this one. Perhaps you would force a family member to carry the product of rape or incest to term, but I can't. And if I wouldn't for my own, I'm not going to demand that someone else do so.

            1. Illocust   10 years ago

In this case I'm just arguing for logical consistency. If you think a unborn child is equivalent to an infant then it needs to be treated legally the same as an infant. If you don't think those things are equivalent then you don't need to treat them the same.

And no, I wouldn't let a family member murder an infant that was the product of rape. Even if it was going to be several months before they could get it adopted.

              1. wareagle   10 years ago

that's your decision. I'm not forcing a woman to go through that and I'm not putting the result of violence on a par with other pregnancies. That family member you're intent on forcing to carry to term may not agree with you.

                1. Illocust   10 years ago

The one I won't allow murder their infant might not either. Infants and the unborn are either equivalent or their not.

        1. Illocust   10 years ago

Same argument could be used for twinkies. The issue is magnitude. One or two generations of incest isn't likely to cause anymore problems than one or both of the parents being in their fifties.

What comes first, calls for Europeans to arm themselves or for tighter gun control? Tighter control, of course. Seems like nearly everything in the EU will require ever tighter control which will lead to failure.

      1. GILMORE?   10 years ago

In this case the solution is an easy one

Just as places like NY and Chicago blame the failure of their gun-control policies on neighboring loose-gun-control states like Indiana (or in NY's case.... they blame South Carolina? something like that)...

...the Euros blame the ineffectiveness of their own policy on those funky former Eastern Bloc states which the EU imports lots of cheap labor from. Obvious Solution = populist policies restricting trade and traffic w/ Eastern Europe. None of it will help, of course. The 'grey & black markets' in the EU are...what, like ~20% of the real economy in many countries? and that's a generous guesstimate.

Bloomberg's frothing about Guns in NYC was pretty hard to sell when you had cities of 1/10th the size (like Baltimore) producing more overall gun-murders and far, far more actual 'shooting incidents'...

...if guns were in fact "flooding the streets of NY" the way they describe... the most remarkable thing is how few times they are actually being used by criminals. Maybe they're being saved for 'home defense?"

The fact that NYC remains on a trajectory of 'lowest per-capita crime rate in history' WHILE being 'flooded' with illegal guns is never actually addressed by the Bloombergian-Statistical-Types, who seem to find ways to spin data no matter how inconsistent with the truth. Have Cake, Eat Cake.

Either they are touting NYC's draconian restrictions as being a 'cause' of the remarkably-low crime rates... or they're bemoaning the swiss-cheese-nature of these restrictions which apparently can't do anything about the guns at all.

The argument here, of course is that gun control works to an extent-- it keeps the criminals scurrying under the watchful eye of Sauron. But not for gun control, it would be so much worse.

We can bring gun crime to zero if we just repeal 2a.

  24. CatoTheChipper   10 years ago

In his brief summary of the Gonzales v. Raich case, Jacob Sollum describes the absurdity of the SCOTUS opinion. However, it is even more absurd than he describes. In Wickard v. Filburn, the Court found that the production of a commodity for one's own use was subject to federal regulatory control since such production could affect interstate commerce. Although the Wickard reasoning is an absurdly broad interpretation of the commerce clause and fundamentally anti-liberty, it still has some logic in that Filburn might actually have purchased grain in interstate commerce if he had not grown it himself. Gonzales v. Raich takes it to another level of absurdity: Raich could not have legally purchased marijuana in interstate commerce if she had not grown it herself. Since Congress had already banned interstate commerce in marijuana, her own production of marijuana simply could not have an indirect effect upon interstate commerce.

And when will people learn to roll a proper joint? You're not supposed to literally twist it up.

    1. Dances-with-Trolls   10 years ago

Depends. I had a gf that would roll hash spliffs, twist just the tip, burn it, and take it off like a cap. Awesome.

    2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   10 years ago

Jesus, Zeb, it only became legal a week ago. There's a lot of cultural training that needs to happen here.

    3. CatoTheChipper   10 years ago

Ideally one should roll a joint just before smoking. But sometimes it's more convenient to roll a joint in advance. Twisting the ends is sometimes necessary to prevent the joint's overly dry or powdery contents from spilling out during transport.

      1. Zeb   10 years ago

Yeah, twist the ends, not the whole thing. That thing's not going to burn right.

I rolled my own cigs for years, so I probably have an advantage.

This is how it works when a COP shoots a black person and is charged with Murder:

    1. Officer Plead Not Guilty and is OVER charged !!!
    2. Have the PBA pay then entire Legal Defense of the Cop
    3. The District Attorney and Attorney General of the State will behave as if they were the Cops defense lawyer and present the evidence as he is innocent.
    4. The District Attorney and Attorney General of the State will will offer immunity to other officers to testify in the Cop's innocence.
    5. The Cop will WAIVE IS RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL so that another cop (called a Judge) can find him innocent.
    6. In the unusual event that the Cop doesn't WAIVE is right to a trial by JURY, the venue will be changed to the WHITEST Venue possible.
    7. Someone in that JURY will hang or ALL will find not-guilty.
    8. When the JURY Hangs, the DA decides to DROP Charges.
    9. All Along, our Wee Little Piggie is out Free collecting his paycheck and all other benefits courtesy of the tax payer (including the black people trying to convict him).

OT: Has anyone been listening to this new podcast "Contra Krugman"? I've enjoyed it. The premise is that they refute Paul Krugman's NYT column every single week. They link to the column itself and encourage listeners to read it, which I always do before listening to the podcast. They manage to expose some gaping holes in Krugman's premise every time.

I had never actually read Krugman's column before, but Jesus, the level of derp is hazardous.

    1. PapayaSF   10 years ago

He used to be a respectable economist, before he turned into a Team Blue shill. He even knew that a minimum wage reduced employment.

      1. Akira   10 years ago

That's one of the things I find amusing about it: they dig up articles from the NYT, often by Krugman himself, and other tidbits from Krugman's other writings that contradict the leftist boilerplate talking points that he spews off these days.

My hypothesis is that Krugman is just spewing off what the Dems want to hear in the hopes of getting appointed Secretary of the Treasury or something.

        1. PapayaSF   10 years ago

I think he gets invited to better parties when he sticks to the correct narrative.

        2. Bern-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

Any time i disagree with Krugman to the progtards i know, the response is basically "You don't know what you're talking about. He has a Nobel prize." Never mind that he received the award for his work in international markets and nothing to do with the shit he blathers on about in NYT

          1. Akira   10 years ago

The Argumentum Ad Nobel Prize is another classic... It's funny how "progressives" never mention that F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman also won the Nobel Prize .

Before we set up colonies on Mars, we need to discuss renaming its moons

      1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

"If nothing else, we should be thinking of the children who will someday grow up to be Mars colonists. No one currently bats an eye when an adult leads a child out into the backyard to admire a planet orbited by panic and terror. These very children may one day exit from their habitat on yet another bright and balmy Martian morning, their hearts brimming with optimism, and look up at those pale moons. We're doing nothing less than setting up those future colonists for failure ? or interplanetary warfare."

        Yeah, I'll go with parody.

        1. Notorious UGCC   10 years ago

"A new finding suggests that, in a mere 50m years, the larger of the moons will tear itself apart into zillions of chunks of orbiting rubble. A planetary geoscientist would argue that Phobos is feeling the strain of Martian gravity, but I wouldn't be so sure. In the course of 50m years, Phobos will be soaking up a lot of baleful vibes. Do we really want future generations to be witnessing a nearby moon disintegrating into rubble and wondering, Did we do that?"

          Yup, parody.

"Traditionally, for either type of trespass -- criminal or civil -- some level of intent is required. Thus, the trespasser must not simply unwittingly traverse another's land but must knowingly go onto the property without permission. Knowledge may be inferred when the owner tells the trespasser not to go on the land, when the land is fenced, or when a "no trespassing" sign is posted. A trespasser would probably not be prosecuted if the land was open, the trespasser's conduct did not substantially interfere with the owner's use of the property, and the trespasser left immediately on request. - See more at: http://realestate.findlaw.com/.....v4bNc.dpuf "
