This is another example of why the government should not be trusted to preserve our natural resources.

The reason they cull bison is to protect cattle on federal lands around Yellowstone that are leased to ranchers for cheap grazing.

So many people imagine that the purpose of the National Park Service, the BLM, Fish and Wildlife Service, etc. is to protect our natural resources from commercial interests like ranchers, but we live in a pluralistic democracy and that means that our politicians and bureaucracies don't just serve the interests of environmentalists and conservationists. Our politicians and bureaucracies also serve the interests of ranchers and others whose interests are in direct conflict with environmentalism and conservation.

That's the great thing about private property! The only interests that matter are those of the people who own it. It's true that environmentalists and conservationists might decide that they need to cull bison populations from time to time for the good of the herd, too--the question environmentalists and conservationists should be asking themselves is who they would rather were making those decisions: bureaucracies that are overseen by politicians who are beholden to ranchers as well as conservationists? Or private landholding charities that are funded and, thus, only beholden to people who care about conservation?

The Fish and Wildlife service killed protected sea otters by moving them out of the Sea Otter Exclusion Zone to protect the sushi/uni industry. Sea Otters have ravenous appetites, and their favorite food is sea urchin. Urchins are also responsible for the environmental devastation of our kelp forests off of California, and when the otters were trapped almost to extinction, the demise of those kelp forests all but crushed the fisheries. And the Fish and Wildlife service was protecting invasive sea urchins from protected Sea Otters!

Save our endangered species, by all means, but please save them from the federal agencies that are charged with protecting them.

Memo to environmentalists:

There's this thing called rent-seeking.

Stop squandering taxpayer money on agencies that are advertised as protecting our natural resources from commercial interests, but whose real purpose is just as much to protect our natural resources from environmentalists and conservationists.

Many of the long terms threats to our natural resources couldn't sustain themselves if it weren't for interference and help of the federal government. When people who are using government land for extremely reduced rates or free complain that their operations couldn't survive without the assistance of agencies like the BLM, environmentalists should believe them.

And yet who is it that's always clamoring for the government to "protect" more and more land?

This proposal was answered by three "no"s.

Westerville rejected the idea: ""Public sidewalks are public infrastructure and generally they don't go up for sale the same way private property would or a house might go up for sale," said Christa Dickey, community affairs administrator for the city of Westerville."

I introduced myself to the reporting neighbor and asked if he was aware of the gravity of his actions ? the ocean of armed officers, my life in danger. He stuttered about never having seen me, before snippily asking if I knew my next-door neighbor. After confirming that I did and questioning him further, he angrily responded, "I'm an attorney, so you can go f? yourself," and walked away.

I got no clear answers from the police that night and am still struggling to get them, despite multiple visits, calls and e-mails to the Santa Monica Police Department requesting the names of the officers, their badge numbers, the audio from my neighbor's call to 911 and the police report. The sergeant didn't e-mail me the officers' names as he promised. I was told that the audio of the call requires a subpoena and that the small army of responders, guns drawn, hadn't merited an official report. I eventually received a list from the SMPD of 17 officers who came to my apartment that night, but the list does not include the names of two officers who handed me their business cards on the scene.

I tend to believe this sort of story is full of exaggerations, but none of what she wrote strains credulity.
