Ruling Against California's Death Penalty Reversed, Officer Who Killed Corey Jones Fired, U of Missouri Names Interim President: P.M. Links

-
Credit: Ken Piorkowski / photo on flickr A federal appeals court panel has unanimously reversed a lower court ruling that declared California's death penalty to be unconstitutional. A lower court had determined that the system constituted cruel and unusual punishment because of delays and uncertainty with appeals. California has hundreds of prisoners on death row but hasn't executed anybody in nearly a decade over challenges.
- The police officer who shot and killed Corey Jones, who had been stopped on the side of the road with a broken-down vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has been fired.
- Graphic video has been released showing police in Virginia Tasing a man over and over again outside a hospital where he was originally brought for medical help. The man, Linwood Lambert, 46, died.
- Sources tell Fox News that the FBI is expanding its probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server issues to determine whether anybody made false statements to them.
- A judge in Utah took a lesbian couple's foster child away to give to a straight couple because he said the child would be better off raised by heterosexuals. The couple is fighting the ruling, and Republican Gov. Gary Herbert criticized it as another form of "activism on the bench."
- The Border Patrol is putting off a decision whether to make agents wear body cameras to do more research.
- The University of Missouri has named a new interim president, and he is black.

Gone Galt?
Hello.
Cops are still killing.
War on cops huh.
They say there's a war on cops, but they never point out that the cops are winning.
It's a war you know, they have to shoot back.
Even when no one shot first, or even had a weapon.
If you have a pocket you could be armed. C'mon man that's just common sense.
The University of Missouri has named a new interim president, and he is black.
Yay?
Now racism is over. Right?
Please?
Ha! That's just like an overpriveleged white person to think, in this post-racial, post-Obama, post-Ferguson, post-Mizzou world!
/I seriously have seen people say "post-Obama, post-Ferguson" as an indication over how racist the country is an not, y'know, that the country elected a black guy twice and a national outrage occured over the shooting of an unarmed black man in a midsize city when he was not the perfect victim
/You will never win
Not being racist is racist.
I heard a radio news story on the change this evening. I think it was ABC radio news. Anyway, they made passing reference to the nebulous and unconfirmed nature of the charges and protest that lead to the resignation and the football team's role. They concluded with "the students and administration have a lot of work to do restoring the integrity of the University of Missouri system."
I don't know if they meant "restoring the integrity" as a double-entendre for both "perceptions of racism and race relations" and "wildly inappropriate and incoherent overreaction to unsubstantiated minor insults", but that's how I took it.
Even he'd better not think bad thoughts, he's a male, so all the Anthony and Antonia Fremont's could still wish even him to The Cornfield. And he'd better REALLY like the football team, they seem to have more than little institutional power at this point.
Can't wait until Fanduel and Draftkings represents 20% of our economy, then we can go in full decline-
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/.....28/?no-ist
Should have made him Asian or Indian just to flip the protestors off.
So, I wonder how Ms. "Black Men, Black Men" Mizzou student would react if she were trying to exercise her 1A rights and people called for a group of white men to come stop her?
That's different because shut up it just is. Back in the dark ages, Gloria Steinem talked about reversing the roles, but in this more enlightened age, we know that the roles are never, ever, ever subject to reversal, ever.
Because of historical oppression. Duh.

Nigger - please
We've hit critical levels of derp here in Columbia. I envy those of you watching from afar. Someone tried to progsplain to me that the professor was not a state actor. Then called me insensitive for laughing.
Hahahaha... Oh, you're serious.
No, I posted that as snark. Although I really would like for someone to ask her that. The incoherent babbling would be delicious. No, I don't think it would be a good idea to actually try that.
Not blatant discrimination? Huh.
Suspect that being Utah the Gov is Mormon. He's in a tough spot. Labelling it as discrimination would offend his base, most of whom are fine with that. Failure to condemn it would also be a problem.
The comments on Deseret News would seem to bear this out. Probably the best statement he could've made considering the circumstances.
But holy shit, this judge is a moron.
That's a common misspelling of "mormon."

Por que no los dos?
That ruling is super fucked up. Those poor kids. Like they didn't have enough shit happen in their lives to end up in foster care they had to be removed from parents they were beginning to trust too.
Also lesbians live in Utah?
And I'm guessing some groups of women even keep a man around, you know, just so everything looks all acceptable like.
Ah that makes sense
There is literally nothing better for children than prolonged court battles. Hell, how old is the kid? Someone take her fucking deposition.
And not just the moving around; now, they get a few fun weeks of national media coverage, and asshole reporters shoving cameras in their faces asking how much they love their two mommies/how badly their two mommies treated them (more of the former, but maybe one or two will try for the latter)
Ugh, seriously, that judge is such a dick. THINK THINGS THROUGH ASSHOLE
Maybe he did, and he just really hates children.

How will he spend his eventual back pay?
The next time he gets a paid vacation after he takes a job with another police department?

"We need to make sure of how easy it is to reach the "off" button before we approach someone"
I'm guessing they'll turn to voice activation. The moment the camera detects the cops voice, instant shutdown.

Zimbabwe's Mister Ugly pageant has record number of entries
"We are looking for natural ugliness," Machowa said.
Facial features count the most, but contestants will also be judged according to their confidence when walking the runway and how they handle the question-and-answer round of the pageant.
"People have always seen ugliness is something to be ashamed of," said Machowa, explaining why he launched this alternative pageant.

You set yourself up regularly....it's pretty funny. 8%.
The police officer who shot and killed Corey Jones, who had been stopped on the side of the road with a broken-down vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has been fired.
Sure he has. For now. But we all know that he will appeal the firing and with union help will have that reversed. This is turning into stylized theatre, like kabuki.
More like Bukaki.

Every day you see one more card. You take it on faith, you take it to the heart.
So - you're saying the waiting is the hardest part?
The police officer who shot and killed Corey Jones, who had been stopped on the side of the road with a broken-down vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has been fired.
The Daily Beast article links to another article. From that article:
"The City of Palm Beach Gardens has been cautiously and methodically considering the employment status of Officer Nouman Raja. Therefore, Officer Raja, a probationary employee with the city, has been terminated from employment effective Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at 5 p.m.
"The independent criminal investigation into the Officer-Involved Shooting that occurred on Oct. 18, 2015, is ongoing and the city will continue to cooperate with all agencies involved.
"Article 28, Section 4 of the current Police Benevolent Association Union contract with the City of Palm Beach Gardens, which governs all police officers' positions of employment with the city states:
"Any decision involving assignments, layoff or dismissal of probationary employees is entirely within the discretion of the city. Such decision shall not be subject to the grievance procedure. However, the employee may grieve other alleged contractual violations during said probationary period.'"
Hmm... do you think the union will let a little thing like Article 28, Section 4 of that contract stand in the way of getting Officer Raja reinstated?
Yeah - we have similar provisions in some parts of our contract. Of course the union still grieves them. The difference is - they umpire never upholds their position.
So - there's hope....
"Police Benevolent Association Union"
God I love that.
the Officer-Involved Shooting
God, but I hate these euphemisms.
"Sources tell Fox News that the FBI is expanding its probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server issues to determine whether anybody made false statements to them."
Has she ever told anyone the truth?
Hopefully they'll find someone who knows something and for whom the risk of a perjury conviction is scarier than Clintonian retaliation. Or someone with nothing to lose (ie terminally ill, etc).
"hey're getting clo...tep up the treatmen s and end thi... HC..."
*recovered email fragment from donated hard drive*
"...for whom the risk of a perjury conviction is scarier than Clintonian retaliation...."
Hmmm. That could make the pickings slim.
A Clinton conviction would probably also lead to all sorts of retaliation from the Clinton camp -- you know that cunt has a lot of dirt on others. I keep hoping that a bunch of corrupt government ass holes all take each other down in one big fell swoop.
Isn't a state-level version of that going on in PA? Quite fun, IMHO.
Yep, we have a state Attorney General who's had her law license suspend but refuses to step down from her job. Isn't that practicing law without a license?
So who plays Hilary in the movie? Sadly, I see more "modern day McCarthyism" as the take rather than "All the President's men" style thriller.
Tea Leoni plays her on TV. Maybe she's available.
No, Tea Leoni is attractive and therefore cannot be portraying the Hilldebeast.
"Has she ever told anyone the truth?"
She's pretty certain Chelsea's hers.
But is Bill?
...FBI is expanding its probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server issues to determine whether anybody made false statements to them.
Lying to the feds? That's Scooter Libby bad.
I'd say it's Martha Stewart bad, but Martha was in the unfortunate position of not having the proper connections.
I believe Comey headed up both of those investigations. He is not good at solving crimes, but gosh dernit you better not lie to a federal agent.
The police officer who shot and killed Corey Jones, who had been stopped on the side of the road with a broken-down vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has been fired.
Cruel and unusual!
Am I the only one who found the latest South Park episode problematic? Wasn't it... pro-cop?
yep
I thought it was a bit too pro-cop, but I also liked how they poked fun at the sanctimonious "progressives" who bleat about how wonderful and virtuous they are, but don't want to be faced with any actual poor people.
What I always loved about South Park was their genius at mocking both (all) sides at the same time. Not so much last night.
Actually, I thought they were spot on. They pointed their finger of scorn at the police, somewhat. But the real blowtorch of satire was aimed at all of us - in the form of our bootlicking politicians who give them their marching orders.
The calling in of the swat team to handle a little girl talking during assembly and the Mayor's reactions were spot on satire. We keep putting the police in the position to fail, and then we pick out a token 1% of those failures to get pissed about.
They didn't get distracted with other issues, but it is clear that the mission we give the police - war on drugs, school discipline, etc. and the training - shoot first or you'll die, etc. are the root cause of the horrible acts of the police, (along with the complete failure to hold anyone accountable).
In the end the Mayor and the Citizens gave the police tacit approval to assault poor minorities as long as they kept the riff-raff out of the Whole Foods parking lot. That pretty much sums up the deal with the devil as it stands.
I don't know if you'll find this "too pro-cop"" or not... but its pretty apropos. and funny.
Outstanding video. Very articulate.
"Articulate"?? OH I GET IT, YOU'RE SAYING THAT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK
But was she CLEAN!1
Has she been tested?
No, it was evenhanded; the cops themselves are either evil or stupid, but their presence is often necessary. The episode showed the cops to be sadists (especially towards minorities) and willing to let the town go to hell if they couldn't have their way.
Released report shows photos of poop swastika
Wow. That's just horrific. I don't know if I could ever take a shit in there, knowing someone had put that on the wall.

That is the most moronic attempt at racist provocation ever attempted. A poop swastika. Who in their right mind would not just laugh that off.

Has anyone calculated the projected tuition/fee costs of this incident? More diversity education, more resources, new University positions/departments...
They'll just fire some janitors, groundskeepers, and assistant profs to pay for it. For great social justice, nobody takes one for the team like the poor and powerless.
What does it matter? Bernie Sanders will make college free, so the cost of things like this will be irrelevant!

I've been told that automation won't happen, even as I've presented evidence that it is happening.
That's because the people who don't believe those jobs can be automated are imagining that automation will look like a humanoid robotic machine sitting at the same desk, doing exactly the same movements. It never crosses their minds that only the value-add will be automated. The resource-drain parts of those jobs will be cut out.
Exactly - they're also picturing Bender standing behind the grill wielding a spatula, flipping burgers and think that'll never happen. The reality would be something like a totally redesigned grill spitting out fully-formed burgers. Somehow they think automation would require machines that could accommodate the current work environment vs. the work environment changing to accommodate the machines.
Conveyor ovens, and they already have them. You didn't think Chili's employees actually cooked, did you?

Does that phrase mean something specific and new I should know about, or is it just a new buzzword?

Howard University Shut Down Due to Death Threats
Credibility of 'Threats'? =
"The anonymous threat, posted on an online comment board on Wednesday, said its writer had left the University of Missouri on Tuesday and returned to Maryland.
Laced with epithets, racial slurs and misspellings, the post said the writer would attack blacks at Howard after 10 on Thursday, without specifying morning or evening, as well as those using the subway.",
Riiiiiight.
I'm surprised they didn't say they'd be screaming racial epithets from the back of their pickup truck while rebel-yell whooping and shooting their Assault Weapons at Black Bodies.
Black lies matter!
So, basically they are sending an invitation to every dumb troll in the world, saying "come fuck with us, it's really easy".
Basically.
Of course, I assume that's exactly what they want = "Fuck with us so we can advertise how people are fucking with us, and so we can create a huge fucking stink then have a rally/protest in D.C. and DEMAND ACTION CHANGE AND STUFF"
If someone said it on the internet it must be true.
Who lies or exaggerates on the interwebz?
Not me.
On a side note, the C.I.A. finally let me retire in peace after all the fine, super-secret agent work I have done, so now I can finally go get my penis reduced in size (what a burden!) and go live on my Mediterranean yacht in peace.
I hear you, friend. Former employers are such a pain. The Ford Modeling Agency keeps calling begging me to come back but I can't because I've already scheduled my breast reduction surgery.
I believe this is just the beginning of a trend we're going to see: Peru will radically lower its oil royalties from an average of 20% to 5% to jumpstart oil production.
http://www.rigzone.com/news/oi.....rice_Slump
I believe the collapse in oil prices and their ongoing suppression by fracking (and monetary policy?) will engender a virtuous, self-enforcing cycle of nations lowering barriers to oil production and taking less of a cut, which will increase production and competitivity, which will engender further lowering of barriers.
Why would anyone want to loosen up production when there's a global oversupply?
Cash flow, my friend. Cash. Flow.
But if that's the case, then why would peru's reducing their share of royalties make any sense? they'd just be selling a lot more oil and taking in the same amount (or less)
Better to take less of some than more of nothing. There's a royalty curve, and the optimum point is moving to the left and downward.
That makes sense for a tiny country like Peru...
But not for any other major oil producer. My following of US rig-count trends shows severe cutbacks. You'd tend to find the same in any large global producer, where 2015 production has dropped about 30% or so from 2013-2014
the idea of historically-low prices producing ""a virtuous, self-enforcing cycle of nations lowering barriers to oil production and taking less of a cut"... makes no sense.
Actually, it makes to fucking sense because there's this thing called 'demand'.
Fracking is higher-cost but that cost is always getting lower and effectively acts as a cap on the price of oil. Once the price gets to the cap, the fracking oil gushes forth. Fracking has changed the equation: OPEC has lost control.
Your graphics don't really change my point. They re-inforce it: with rigs going offline, if you want one in your country doing its thing you'd better attract it. That means lower royalties and being business-friendly. That's why Ecuador is suddenly all sweet talk and roses to the mining and oil companies. They need the FDI.
You're still not making any sense. I never said anything about the influence of fracking which is a separate issue entirely.
Major oil producers have cut output by 30-40%; they are *reducing* production.
Below the top 10-15 oil producing countries... no one matters at all. Point to any of the top 15 countries making efforts to 'open up more production' and lowering royalties/income from production, and maybe you'd have a point. But that's not happening.
Everything the IEA says on the matter basically contradicts you.
"The IEA doesn't see oil prices recovering above $80 per barrel until after 2020. But it reckons shrinking investment across the industry ? in shale and elsewhere ? could leave the world just as dependent on OPEC as it was in the 1970s.
more
http://blogs.reuters.com/break.....re-likely/
"Major oil producers have cut output by 30-40%; they are *reducing* production."
Er pretty sure Saudi Arabia massively ramped up output and isn't quitting. Russia also ramped up a bit.
http://globalcognition.blogspo.....rabia.html
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/.....27742.html
Granted that first link is from last year but the second one is more up to date.
I am not sure if I think the wizards at the IEA are as prescient as they like to think. Top Men much? Did they forecast the fall in oil prices?
What isn't discussed in that article is how much fracking has changed things. Oil production projects used to be a long-term thing: you planned the project, poured a crap ton of initial capital investment into it, and then it produced for so many decades and you hoped that your forecasts were good. Fracking can be turned on and off very easily and quickly. It essentially turns oil production into something closer to manufacturing. Once the price gets to the profit point, the spigots turn back on and price is kept down.
I am not sure if Mexico is in the top 10-15 but they have recently undergone a serious reform partly in response to their faltering state-monopoly. They are going to unlock a LOT of conventional oil. The good stuff.
Mexico had an auction after this reform and after the oil price had fallen. Total flop. Embarrassing. Companies weren't interested in the onerous conditions, and the fall in prices did not justify them. They then had another auction.
There was some consensus among oil analysts and executives from private oil companies that Mexican authorities had done a much better job in this auction than in the previous one, easing some requirements and lowering the minimum bids to boost interest.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/it.....1443629947
This is essentially what I am talking about. I guess we shall see, but if I were a government reliant on oil revenues and the oil majors I needed to operate the fields were walking away because prices no longer justified the conditions I imposed on them, I'd change the conditions.
Here is another nice article about how the survivors of OPEC's price war are going to keep prices down.
http://business.financialpost......-price-war
and they could be thinking of employment levels of their citizens
If you are a government reliant on monies from oil production, you want to make that it is YOUR oil that's getting sold instead of production shifting to a more competitive location.
Algeria and the Gulf countries are bleeding so much money. Tens of billions in reserves already gone and no reversal in sight.
And they totally promise to never raise it once the infrastructure is built.
Peru is one of the better ones for this kind of thing.

Draining the swamp!!11!!1! Bring em on !!111!!
I believe in Afghanistan, they referred to killing Taliban as "mowing the grass".
Because they were just going to have to go back out again in a few weeks and start over.
It's true: this is draining the swamp. A lot of evil has been concentrated into an area crossing across Iraq and Syria, and they just need to be killed now.
Good for them.
Help me out here:
Is that good news or bad news? I'm having trouble keeping score, what with all the Smart Diplomacy and Leading From Behind.
Excellent news. Shingal is an important crossroads of supply lines leading to Mosul and other ISIS strongholds.

Who you calling turkey, friend?
So apparently this is happening this afternoon. Totes not racist or anti-Semitic you guys.
Give them everything they want.
Every. Single. Thing.
And don't even cut funding. Keep it level (who can complain?), and the campus will be an abandoned shell within a few years.
Besides the anti-Semitism, I can't wrap my head around it. Cancellation of all student debt, zero tuition... but higher wages for everyone and more money for more programs.
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM FOR THAT STUFF?
Are you saying their good intentions are worthless!?
It will all work out okay because magic.
OCCULTISM!!

Duh, all the extra tax money from the higher paid workers, and if that isn't enough they can always just raise their wages till it is;)
Uh the 1% duh! They're just hording all the money in their Scrooge McDuckian money vaults.
Strasserian Fascists never were very good at math. Great-Grandpappy Gottfried would be proud.

The money will come from the money tree, of course.
This is so ironic coming from CUNY. A few decades ago, CUNY had high selectivity and more Nobel Laureate graduates than any other U. They were a ladder into American society. Then they went to open enrollment, in maybe the 70s? I knew someone who was a senior at CUNY that year and then couldn't get accepted to any med school because of that. The place was soon an empty shell compared to even five years before, at lreast achievement wise.
You would think they'd had enough of trendy ideas after that, but no. (Except apparently the honor program is quite good.)
I'm pretty sure the Nobels dried up as a result of Jew quotas at other colleges ending.
No, nothing bad about the jews as a people, or any other semitic people. They are opposing a nation-state and the ideology of that nation state which says it's fine for people whose ancestors may have lived in historical palestine thousands of years ago to waltz back in and displace the palestinians who were there all along. Glad I could clear that up for you.
Whew. As long as they use the right words, its all good.
PB's usually the one big on using "Zionist" to pretend he's not hating on Jews.
Words mean things, RC. Or have you gone full you-know-who and are now claiming to be able to read the minds of others. Ironic since libertarians frequently have their words twisted and the worst possible motivations ascribed to them.
Now, if you want an actual example of real anti-semitism, see the poop swastika link above.
"They are opposing a nation-state and the ideology of that nation state which says it's fine for people whose ancestors may have lived in historical palestine thousands of years ago to waltz back in and displace the palestinians who were there all along."
So they oppose every nation state that exists? Because that applies to EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM.
Thanks for sharing, 'Toxic.
Your welcome. You should probably share less.
What applies to them? I don't think Jordan thinks it's fine for people whose ancestors may have...
That applies to every nation. Every nation started with displacement of people.
When you're blaming "Zionists" for taking over the school, raising tuition, and for every other problem, it's pretty obvious that you're using "Zionist" as a stand-in for Jew. C'mon.
Please Juvenile, let's not trigger the anti-semites by uncovering their thinly veiled anti-semitism. I really don't want to have to clean the watercolors out of their hair after they go to the safe space.
I feel like I need a safe space after the last week. We need a Reason safe space, except instead of puppies and watercolors we have bourbon and porn.
I thought is pot, ass secks with Mexicans.
Mad Scientist is the only one here who GETS IT.
We had one, then Nick tore it down. RIP Thread with No Post.

I don't think it's as simple as that either. You have to remember how little thought most people put into their politics. Israel is bad because that's what all the other cool campus activists think.
I suspect that there is as much anti-Israel stuff that makes people sound like anti-semites as there is anti-semitic stuff that people disguise as anti-Israel.
Don't forget that there is a large pro-israel faction who conveniently label any criticism of Israel as anti-semitic. Those are the people who are the problem. And remember that many of them are only pro-Israel because of the end-times prophecy thing.
No...I support Israel because it's a modern 21st century econonmy that could help the retards move intlo the 21st century.
If the palestinians don't want to join the modern world they can fuck off.
You are a moron. What state in the middle east has a functioning economy. It ain't Syria and you are a fucking moron.
How come nobody is protesting on behalf of poor East Prussia Germans, who were ethnically cleansed from their homeland?
If Poland wouldn't have booted those ethnic Germans from their homeland there would be far less German suicide bombers blowing up Polish restaurants thats for sure.
"If Poland wouldn't have booted those ethnic Germans from their homeland"
Was this the last time when Russia booted the Poles west, or the time before the last time when the Ukranians booted the Russkis who booted the Poles, after the Germans sent the Jew into Ukraine?
I do so try to keep up....
Poles (and their Russian overlords, but I'm about 95% sure that London Government would act the same) expelled every German they could. That is a good way to ensure you don't have them blowing up your restaurants (and the one that Jordan followed in 1949 on West Bank and in East Jerusalem).
I wish it weren't true (I'd still have my birth country, for one) but ethnic clensing works.
Riiiiight....because nobody can criticize Israel unless all previous historical injustices have already been addressed.
Woosh.
No shit, Tonio being a cosmo.
a nation-state and the ideology of that nation state which says it's fine for people whose ancestors may have lived in historical palestine thousands of years ago to waltz back in and displace the palestinians who were there all along
It's a good thing it's 1949, otherwise a few generations might have elapsed since the establishment of the state of Israel which would substantially complicate this narrative.
Nah, I'm sure there's somewhere to put all these Israelis. Maybe the sea?
I'm sure Tonio would offer them a free train ride somewhere...
Oh, come on. There may be a lot of antisemites who hide it in anti-Israel rhetoric. But that doesn't mean that one can't be sincerely critical of Israel without being a Jew-hater.
That kind of thinking is just as lazy and dismissive as some SJW shouting "privilege".
sincerely critical of Israel
Critical of the modern day country's actions or critical of its mere existence? The former is a legitimate avenue of criticism, the latter is either pie-in-the-sky academic horseshit or just the prelude to forced relocation and/or genocide.
Lest we forget, the US was a nation founded on territory with prior claimaints...
Oh, it's definitely academic horseshit to argue about whether it should have come into being the way it did. I'm just saying it's not necessarily indicative of a hidden hatred for Jews.
But that doesn't mean that one can't be sincerely critical of Israel without being a Jew-hater.
It is hypothetically possible, sure. It is just that in practice it seldom actually works out that way.
A good first test: is their criticism of countries in proportion to the wrong those countries actually inflict on civilian populations? Or, as usually seems to be the case, do they heap hatred upon Israel while ignoring the fact that literally every one of its neighbors (not to mention most of the rest of the world) is guilty of worse?
Thank you, Zeb, for being one of the few intellectually honest people here wrt that issue.
Zeb is Cathy Young of the kommentariat.
Oh that's cute. Tonoi is pretending he has a clue what it means to be 'intellectual' or honest.
They should have just stayed put behind the Iron Curtain and accepted Uncle Joe's sweet caress. This policy would have had the added bonus of keeping Nasser from bumbling into several wars, thus enabling him to usher in an era of unending prosperity for the entire western Arab world.
The only alternative to living in the USSR was to move to Palestine?
I think too much time has passed for anything to change as far as the existence and location of Israel goes. The past is the past. But it's silly to pretend that there aren't any better ways that things could have played out.
They needed a homeland of some sort, and while I think they would have been better served going to Belize or Jamaica or New Zealand or something, by 1945 Palestine was the obvious choice considering its proximity to Europe and the fact that it was the last place with a preexisting proportionately large Jewish community.
Funny how libertarians are usually scrupulous about individual rights, particularly property rights, but in this case group rights are just peachy.
And, since you went there - According to this source non-Jews were the predominate population in historical Palestine until 1948. Now, I'm not vouching for this source, but it's what I could find. What you got?
Also, the Jewish population of the USA has (arguably) always been greater than the Jewish population of Israel. The argument comes from who is considered a Jew. Remember that "Jewish" is a religious designation and Arab is a genetic designation.
I've been partial to Adam Corolla's plan:
Move Israel to Mexico. All the buildings, and take the top few inches of soil along as well. His theory is that places tend to prosper wherever Jews go, and a couple generations after relocating to Mexico, the country will have cleaned up its corruption and have a thriving economy. Plus, it gives the other folks in the Middle East less stuff to bitch about. Crazy, stupid idea? Yes. Maybe just crazy enough to work...
Sometimes the crazy, stupid ideas are the best ones.

It's a good thing it's 1949
Thanks for being intellectually dishonest, but I'm used to that from the Israel-first crowd.
We're not talking about US slavery here. There are still people alive who were displaced by the expansion of Greater Israel. Get back to me when everyone who was alive in 1949 is dead. Get back to me when everyone who was displaced by "settlers" in the 1980's is dead. Get back to me when everyone living on stolen land is dead.
And do whine louder about that "push them into the sea" thing. Let me know how that works out for you.
God, you're a whiny cunt.
There are millions of people living in Israel today who didn't steal any land, weren't alive in 1949, and aren't part of some religious campaign to rebuild Greater Israel.
Why don't you choose your words more carefully.
I'm a member of the "the Israel-first crowd"? What the fuck are you talking about? Way to show some intellectual integrity there, champ.
There are millions of people living in Israel today who didn't steal any land, weren't alive in 1949...
Which makes it all ok, right? So, that Palestinian Olive farmer should just suck it up because his land was grabbed by recent emigres, not immediate post-WW2 emigres? Got. It.
No, and I didn't say any of that. Remember that "intellectual honesty" thing?
I'm pretty sure many Germans displaced by the Soviets, Poles, Czechoslovaks, etc are still alive. Right after the end of WWII a number of new states were created and the borders of existing countries were completely re-drawn everywhere from Eastern Europe to the Indian subcontinent, typically with massive ethnic cleansing. And yet the only country whose existence is controversial is the one populated by Jews.
That's a different issue, Griz. I had thought better of you, but you've descended into the worst sort of goalpost-shifting.
This is one topic that my partner and I have avoided discussing in the last 10 years. Maybe he's even changed his mind on it by now, I don't know. Seriously, there was nothing else we could possibly fight over back then.
So, that was my bone to you: I know people who are both anti-Israel and almost philo-semites.
Now, back to your post. It's a very similar issue and there was no goalpost-shifting in my post.
Why is that a different issue?
And yet the only country whose existence is controversial is the one populated by Jews.
Um....no. There are lots of countries whose existence I find controversial, they are simply not the topic of conversation here. Again, you have an unpleasant tendency to claim that one can't have a position on anything unless one has a position on everything. Also, the fact that the USA has been bankrolling Israel from the beginning makes this very much our problem both in practical terms and in terms of blowback. I would totally STFU if US government aid to Israel ended.
Talk to me another day about aid to other countries if that aid is causing us major, ongoing foreign problems.
" the fact that the USA has been bankrolling Israel from the beginning"
CITATION NEEDED.
"blowback"
Ha ha ha ha The only 'blowback' America got from Israel was a bizarre boat incident, vital intelligence on the USSR, and the destruction of Syrian and Iraqi nuke programs, thanks to which ISIS and other crazies don't have nukes. And probably a great slowing of Iran's nuclear program.
"Talk to me another day about aid to other countries if that aid is causing us major, ongoing foreign problems."
The aid given to Israel causes America less problems than possibly all the other countries that get aid from the USG. Particularly compared to Pakistan.
"There are still people alive who were displaced by the expansion of Greater Israel."
BFD. Pretty sure most of these assholes were drafted to fight Israel or did so voluntarily or otherwise fought against The One Legitimate ME Nation. Therefore, they do not deserve to live let alone be allowed into Israel.
The One Legitimate ME Nation(tm). LOL.
Laugh it up. Funny cause it's true I guess.
You are an ongoing source of LULZ, 'Toxic.
whose ancestors may have lived in historical palestine thousands of years ago to waltz back in and displace the palestinians who were there all along
You mean when they waltzed in and purchased the land?
and for the record, I don't think everyone who is anti-zionist is an anti-semite. In the same way I don't think all liberals are human-hating progressives. But you should at least have the smarts to know when you're being fed propaganda.
The fact remains that during my lifetime that Israel has been the largest recipient of US foreign aid. Get back to me when they have their grubby hands out of our pockets and then we can talk about who is being fed propaganda.
Woosh go the goal posts. Also, love the juxtaposition of the anti-semitism charge and the 'hands out of our pockets complaint'. As if it was Israel that was taxing you (pssst it's actually the USG).
I'm ignorant on the subject and honestly asking. How much of the land that is now Israel was honestly purchased from the previous owners by Zionists? I find it a bit hard to believe that every square inch of Israel was acquired that way and that none of the previous land holders were coerced into giving up their property.
1948 borders basically were. Everything since then was taken by military force (in self defense, that is)
If that's the case, it's a singular country in that way. I still find it hard to believe, but, as I said, I am largely ignorant of that bit of history.
Please excuse me if I don't just take the word of some anonymous people on the Internet. But I will try to educate myself more on the topic.
The land was cheap and sparsely inhabited prior to the 20th century. The population in 1890 (532,000) was around one-fifth what it had been when the Romans destroyed Israel.
It is also worth remembering that there was always a large Jewish minority in the area, especially in and around the cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, and Safed. So some land was owned by Jews already.
Again, Danny Boy is asserting that because some jews continuously occupied Palestine that all Jews have birthright citizenship and property rights there. Again, he is asserting that because some Jews owned and occupied land in Palestine that all Jews are entitled to be there.
"self-defense"
Hahahahahahaha...
Bullshit.
That's called 'historical fact' Tonio. Your inability to square with it is your problem.
I find it a bit hard to believe that every square inch of Israel was acquired that way and that none of the previous land holders were coerced into giving up their property.
Of course not, but the area given to the Jews was majority-Jewish and the Arabs weren't forced out, IIRC. I believe that the majority of the displaced Arabs attained that status by abandoning their land during the first A/I war under the assumption that the Jews would soon be removed, and the Israelis simply refuse to give it back (with good reason, IMO).
There is a revisionist school of historians in Israel who claim that the exodus was planned by Israel and initiated by mass atrocities, but mainstream view is that, while atrocities did occur, they were sporadic and bulk of Arabs fled before Israeli troops got to their homes.
That's more or less what I had thought.
To me it all sounds a bit fucked anyway. But that's how nation states operate.
It is also worth remembering that there was only a short window (from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century) where Jews were actually allowed to move to the area and acquire land. Before and after that the Ottomans and British restricted Jewish immigration while encouraging Arab Muslim immigration.
When Palestinians talk about Palestine as "their homeland", the claim is little more accurate than it is when Americans say it about America. In both cases, most of our ancestors got here pretty recently.
So, because some other (non-Palestinian) Arabs were mean to the Israelis that justifies the Israelis grabbing the land of Palestinian Arabs.
Congrats, you just justified US internment of Japanese-Americans during WW2. Well-done.
Tonio, you should either be more coherent or say who you're replying to.
Randomly-selected Arab talking points don't give us much to go on.
It's all he's got.
"So, because some other (non-Palestinian) Arabs were mean to the Israelis that justifies the Israelis grabbing the land of Palestinian Arabs."
They left. Israel has the right to annex whatever is necessary for Israel to exist.
Most of the Partion Plan Israel (not sure if anyone bothered owning Negev desert?) was purchased from the owners, mostly Turkish landowners not living locally. Which came about from 16th century conquest of the area (and more) by Selim I, so you can bet Arab governments didn't treat it as a legitimate purchase.
The post-WW2/pre-independence migration of Jews to Israel isn't as important as you'd think - British put a moratorium on Jews arriving to their Palestine Mandate in 1939, and, according to Wikipedia (yes, I'm lazy)
Yes, the oppression of European Jews by Nazis, and the internment of post-ww2 Zionist jews en-route to Palestine by Britain, are often used as pretexts to justify the later actions of Israel. The intellectually honest will observe that Palestinian Arabs were not in charge of Nazi concentration camps, nor of British internment camps.
All one needs to observe is that Jews have lived in Israel continuously for all of recorded history.
Did they spend the vast majority of that time as a small minority ruled by a series of invading nations? Absolutely. But there is no logic that entitles "Palestinians" to that land that does not give Jews an older claim to it. You just end up waving your hands and saying "after a long enough time as an oppressed minority, you forfeit your claim".
In which case the only question to ask is: how much longer do the Israelis have to wait before the Palestinian claim is forfeit? 🙂
Yes, Jews have been living in Palestine continuously for much of recorded history. Those Jews (and only those Jews who have been continuously there) are one thing. The Jews who left Palestine for Europe hundreds of years ago are another thing.
So, because some of my ancestors came from Scotland do you think I deserve birthright citizenship there? Am I entitled to displace indigenous Scots and grab their land because people here in North America have been mean to me? Tell me how that works, Dan.
Those Jews (and only those Jews who have been continuously there) are one thing.
Typical of your sort to place tighter restrictions on Jews than on any of the invading cultures. Your grandpappy moved to Hebron in 1946? Welcome to your "homeland", my Palestinian brother! Your ancestors returned to Jerusalem in 800 AD after a few centuries in Persia? Get out, you damned Zionist pig!
All one needs to observe is that Jews have lived in Israel continuously for all of recorded history.
Good to know what low intellectual standards you have, Danny. "Jews." Some Jews? All Jews? Does the presence of some Jews confer rights on all Jews? Does the presence of any Jews nullify the rights of all Palestinan Arabs? Because that's what it sounds like you're saying.
The land has been continuously inhabited by Jews from the time when it was first a Jewish state until the time when the Jewish state was re-established. That's a legitimate claim, despite your attempt to apply a racial-purity requirement to Jews and Jews alone.
The Palestinian claim to the area is "most of us moved here in the 19th and 20th centuries when Jewish immigration was restricted, and the rest raped and murdered their way across this region during the centuries prior to that during the Muslim wars of conquest." I'm unimpressed.
That's right, Danny Boy, continue to bluster along and not engage the argument. So, how is my claim to homestead Scotland different from the claims of that that far-removed jewish person who may (as an individual) had some levantine ancestry?
Nice try with the racial purity angle, but ancestry does actually mean something in the law of inheritance. And you are the one making group claims for inheritance. I'm sticking with individual claims, you know, the libertarian sort.
"Palestinian Arabs were not in charge of Nazi concentration camps, nor of British internment camps."
And the informed will note that Palestinian Arabs were belligerent to Jews and generally backwards.
Well, 'Toxic is an objectivist so that means that the European Jews had every right to displace the "backwards" Arabs.
If those Arabs were belligerent and fought against Israel then yes. C
ertainly any free nation has the right to exist, and in its formation conquer and liberate lands from unfree nations. Note that this is a separate issue from the individual ownership of land referenced in the first sentence above.
Oh and your butthurt is showing.
"Free nation."
Hahahahaha.
Bullshit, redux.
Again, that's a fact. Your inability to square with it is your problem.
Tonio has apparently gone into PB mode.
Remember, rights-respecting nations have the 1) right be formed and 2) the right to annex land from nations that do not respect rights.
whose ancestors may have lived in historical palestine
May have? The whole Jewish uprising that was put down by Titus didn't really happen, or it wasn't Jews?
displace the palestinians who were there all along
You are really ignorant about that area and it's history, I see.
Yes, Marshall, "may have." Full stop. But it is you, not I, who is ignorant of the relevant facts here.
So, we have a population of Jews who were living in Europe for hundreds, if not thousands of years, and who intermarried with indigenous Europeans and are (individually) often indistinguishable from non-Jewish Europeans. Tell me how those people are somehow entitled to birthright citizenship to a land they've never been to. Tell me exactly which chromosomes entitle them to land-grab.
The land was owned by the British, who gave it to the Jews to form Israel. So obviously there was no "land-grab" -- you cannot "grab" land from a non-existent country with no territory.
So, nations own land, not individuals. Again, notice how libertarian principles are easily and transparently discarded for the special case of Israel.
The individuals who owned it were also largely Jewish and wanted a rights-respecting nation.
I want whatever drugs they're taking.
In other Israel-related news: EU will not allow products produced in occupied territories to bear a "Made in Israel" label.
http://www.france24.com/en/201.....t-products
Calling it now: Israel is going to gradually get closer with Russia in the next decade.
I'm guessing there are a growing number of Isreali's happy that Bibi was reelected.
That too. Fuck Europe.
And fuck Tonio and his constant goal-post shifting to justify his hate-on for the one good ME country, which totally isn't anti-semitism. This time is different from almost every other time.
That is actually a possibility we should pay attention to.
Why? Are you afraid someone else will get to be their sugar daddy?
That would be the best thing for us. Let Putin be their Sugar Daddy. They're high-maintenance.
"They're high-maintenance."
Lies. Israel doesn't need that aid all it does is enrich their welfare state. They'll be better off without it.
The real reason to be afraid is that Israel has done so much good for America, especially against the USSR. While Russia isn't a threat to America, we'd all be better off if they didn't have access to Israeli tech and brilliance. OTOH, maybe Israel's superior morality would act as a good influence on Ivan.
Based on this I would at least sack the entire English Department.
...How does the school cancel the students' debt? Like, they want CUNY to pay the students' loans for them?
I know they have a powerful argument - it's punctuated with an exclamation point, after all - but I don't understand it.
The Israel vs Palestine conflict is like the Global Culture War.
Its even dumber than the regular-old-American culture war, and makes less sense.
Israel is the single largest recipient of US foreign aid. Think about that, Gilly. As long as we're paying the piper, we should get to call the tune. But Israel gets us to pay the piper while they get to call the tune. So, two options: We pay, we call (least preferable). They pay, they call (most preferable).
You will notice that nobody here, except me, is calling for US disentanglement with Israel.
You will notice that nobody here, except me, is calling for US disentanglement with Israel.
Jesus Christ you are reaching Andrew Sullivan levels of derangement. Are you going to start talking about Trig Palin now?
Instead of flinging poo, kbolino, try engaging the argument. If you find my arguments nonsensical you may safely ignore them. However, it looks to me like you have no good response on the merits and have gone full ad-hom. Thought you were better than that, but whatever.
You called me whiny, intellectually dishonest, and an "Israel-first"er. What the fuck do you expect?
I expected yet more whining, and you didn't disappoint.
I expected yet more whining, and you didn't disappoint.
Asshole.
Jesus Christ you are reaching Andrew Sullivan levels of derangement. Are you going to start talking about Trig Palin now?
Nope, no assholery there. You get out of the process what you put into the process, kbolino.
What do you want, Tonio? I already made my points, you didn't care to respond to them.
I responded fully to all of your meritorious points.
Some of the points you haven't responded to:
[Where are the Israelis supposed to go?] (paraphrased)
Why the fuck would you act like you are the only one holding that position [of ending foreign aid]?
Ok, what concessions do you want to extract [from the Israelis due to them receiving foreign aid]?
...
Tonio demands 'intellectual honesty' because he needs others to show him what it looks like.
As far as your "argument", abolishing foreign aid is one of the few libertarian positions that is fairly uncontroversial (among libertarians). Why the fuck would you act like you are the only one holding that position? Am I supposed to attach it to the foot of every post that deals with a foreign country?
DISCLAIMER: NOTHING IN THIS POST SHOULD BE CONSTRUED TO SUPPORT FOREIGN AID, WHICH THIS POSTER DOES NOT SUPPORT, NOT EVEN TO ISRAEL
ffs
I would disentangle the US from all of these countries. But only one of them seems to draw the ire of leftists.
And that doesn't make the leftists wrong about that particular case; it merely makes them wrong about the other cases. Also - Israel is single largest recipient of US foreign aid. Who else could blow a US warship out of the water and still get that? Srsly.
"Israel is single largest recipient of US foreign aid."
They are the least undeserving and have done the most for America. Still shouldn't fund them, but 'largest recipient' isn't very helpful. They could still be a small part of the budget that is bigger than any other part.
"Israel is the single largest recipient of US foreign aid. Think about that, Gilly."
Yes, but that's because of Camp David Accords.
Do you know who the OTHER most largest recipient of aid over the last 30 years is? The other party in the Camp David Accords. Egypt.
If you cut out the people we've bombed ourselves (Iraq, Afghanistan), and just counted anyone "over a billion", they're really the only 2 that matter.
And its because of the Camp David Accords.
"The agreement also resulted in the United States committing to several billion dollars worth of annual subsidies to the governments of both Israel and Egypt, subsidies which continue to this day, and are given as a mixture of grants and aid packages committed to purchasing U.S. materiel. From 1979 (the year of the peace agreement) to 1997, Egypt received military aid of US$1.3 billion annually, which also helped modernize the Egyptian military.[24] (This is beyond economic, humanitarian, and other aid, which has totaled more than US$25 billion.) Eastern-supplied until 1979, Egypt now received American weaponry such as the M1A1 Abrams Tank, AH-64 Apache gunship and the F-16 fighter jet. In comparison, Israel has received $3 billion annually since 1985 in grants and military aid packages.[25]"
And my reason for pointing this out is because it doesn't seem like you understand why our aid is basically 'non discretionary' and not something we can unilaterally walk away from, or something which we can expect "something in return for"
I don't give a flying fuck about either country really; and would be perfectly fine with a hot war between Israel and its enemies that left the entire region in (even greater) shambles.
I'm just noting that a lot of people who seem to have 'opinions' about US/Israel relations don't actually have the first clue why they are what they are.
Why does Israel receive more than Egypt? Was that part of the accords, have there been follow-on treaties, or is that additional amount "discretionary"?
I used to be more familiar with it.
It comes from 3-4 sources, about half of which is Foreign Military Financing = which is basically "Paying them to buy Weapons from The US"
You can call that "giving them stuff", or backdoor stimulus, or whatever. Its around 1.7bn last i checked.
the remainder is a mix of all sorts of other stuff, some of which is economic development stuff (lots of software companies in Israel are military contractors), some of which is "rent" we pay on sites we use to store stuff for our own regional activities.. planes, etc.... and some of which is just "Humanitarian Aid", etc.
I'd call about 1/3rd of it truly 'discretionary' but only in the sense that anything congress uses to buy votes is 'discretionary'.
So...
1/3 is a former President's "legacy"
1/3 is corporate welfare
1/3 is domestic vote buying
Sounds about right.
That's certainly one way to describe things.
In the late 1970s, what we thought we were buying was "Peace" between countries that had been at War - as in Real War With Tanks - 3 times in less than 10 years.... were contributing to a regional fuckfest which helped bring about the largest global economic crisis up until recent memory.
Was it money well spent? Meh. Depends. If you consider what we spent on the Cold War, it was like an after-dinner mint.
The 1973 oil embargo did not bring about a crisis in America. That was all hokum. Oil is fungible.
Most people believe that it was directly responsible for long gasoline lines and for service stations running dry. The shortages were, in fact, a byproduct of price controls imposed by President Nixon in August 1971, which prevented oil companies from passing on the full cost of imported crude oil to consumers at the pump (small oil companies, however, were exempted from the price control regime in 1973). In the face of increasing world oil prices, "Big Oil" did the only sensible thing: It cut back on imports and stopped selling oil to independent service stations to keep its own franchisees supplied. By May of 1973 (five months before the embargo), 1,000 service stations had shut down for lack of fuel and many others had substantially curtailed operations. By June, companies in many parts of the country began limiting the amount of gasoline motorists could purchase per stop.
http://www.cato.org/publicatio.....bargo-rest
Did I say anything the US Economy?
You were meant to read the whole thing and understand that the 1978-1979 camp david accords were influenced by the growing ME (and global) instability that was going on in between the initial 1973- and late 70s major oil shocks.
The point wasn't even about "oil" per se. It was about the political environment that shaped US involvement trying to reconcile Egypt and Israel.
Try to follow the plot.
Okay. Just thought that should be pointed out. The perception that the oil embargo caused economic havoc was important in shaping that political environment.
Why Israel more? Probably because Egypt was corrupt as fuck and we were trying to make sure most of it actually went to their military rather than in the back pocket of Mubarak.
:"The modern era of aid to Israel and Egypt was born following the October 1973 war and came of age with the huge sums committed in the wake of the 1978 Camp David Accords. The current levels of assistance -- to Israel, $3 billion per year ($1.8 billion for military, $1.2 billion for economic); to Egypt, $2.1 billion per year ($1.3 billion for military, $815 million for economic) -- have varied only occasionally since 1980.".
here's a paper covering the details of the Why and How of the whole thing.
Eh, I was asking more from the perspective of "why the disparity" not "why Israel more" per se. I would be very surprised if any country that wasn't left with no other choice signed a treaty with an imbalance like that.
On its face, it looks like we bought "Middle East Peace" and are held somewhat to ransom by it. "What, you want to cut that sweet, sweet lucre? Looks like we might have to take a trip to Cairo/Tel Aviv with some tanks and planes..."
""I would be very surprised if any country that wasn't left with no other choice signed a treaty with an imbalance like that."
Not really. Read the linked paper above. amounts of money are relative to where they are earmarked, and what kind of bandwidth the country has to dispose of funds transparently, etc. They were at very different places and had different needs.
Don't write "Tel Aviv," kbolino, it gets the Israel-Firsters all fired up. You're supposed to acknowledge that the Holy City of Jerusalem(tm) is, always has been, and always will be, is the capital of Israel. Srsly. I've been lectured for that here.
Israel gave up territory in Sinai, and Egypt recovered it, so part of it is compensation to Israel. Other part was making sure its military remains the strongest in the region, since Syria and Iraq were still hostile and receipents of Soviet Aid, while Jordan and Saudi Arabia were (and still are) in cold war with Israel, and were (and still are) receipents of US aid.
Also, Egypt used to get more non-military aid from US, because its economy was whatever comes after a basket case.
^what he said.
Why does Israel receive more than Egypt?
Because the Israel lobby is more powerful than the Egypt lobby. But the curious thing is that up until the 21st century the official Israel-firster position was "there is no Israel lobby." Srsly. Abraham Foxman, president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) actually said that on numerous occasions. And also anyone who wasn't 100% in lockstep with AIPAC was labelled an anti-semite. And anyone who dared to acknowledge that there was indeed a vicious and well-funded Israel lobby was branded a paranoiac. Nice strategy.
Also, remember that Egypt's population is much higher than that of Israel, so they are the largest recipient on both a per-country and per-capita basis. Yes, one should "expect something" for massive foreign aid. Only if that something is not blowing US warships out of your territorial waters (see USS Liberty incident). But if that expectation is unrealistic, then the aid should go away. But then one is subject to howling attacks from demonstrated Israel-Firsters like Cytotoxic.
OK, people, done here. G'night.
Your done all right, but you never really started anything other than howling about the 'Israel lobby' and whining like a bitch. And getting Cyto-pwnd.
"Because the Israel lobby is more powerful than the Egypt lobby."
No attempt to prove causative link. 1/10
They get more money than a state with a smaller population and less oil...
"Because the Israel lobby is more powerful than the Egypt lobby""
Weird you should claim that after just having it explained to you that a 37 year old treaty also had a lot to do with it.
As long as we're paying the piper, we should get to call the tune
Ok, what concessions do you want to extract?
Gotta love that Tonio non-interventionism. So Tonio you equally passionate about America telling Nigeria and Iraq how it's gonna be?
Cytotoxic, I'm not responsible for that foreign aid to Nigeria; but since I'm paying for it I expect something for it. Yes, I do expecgt concessions from anyone who recieves our foreign aid (which I'm against in principle, but again being forced to pay for it...), but that rarely comes up here. And I do feel it's important to prioritize the takedown of the biggest welfare queens first.
1) Noninterventionism apparently means getting foreign governments to do something in exchange for payola. Wow. Oh BTW, FYI, Israel gave up the Sinai for that money. That's definitely 'doing something'.
2) " I do feel it's important to prioritize the takedown of the biggest welfare queens first."
And the one that happens to actually be a real US ally.
I sometimes playfully ponder the conundrum of what white people are supposed to do to satisfy the current appropriation charge ?
Having lived in the US southwest for many years should I have strived to learn the language and culture of the Dene (known to most of you as the Navajo ? which itself is a Paiute slur), or would I have been more correct to have my body blasted back to the 5 or 6 places where they came from ? as well as that slice which would then have to go to someplace in the US Midwest?
Or was my choice (for completely different reasons) to move to a different country and learn their language (is this also appropriation?) where I am a distinct minority (by my own choice so a very different lived experience from American minorities)?
At this point in my brief musing it usually turns out that my need for another beer is more pressing than finishing this line of thought so I never quite figure out the proper answer. Any suggestions?
We demand:
An End to the Privatization of Education!
You can all go home now.
They should look forward to a future where "getting an education" is pretty much identical to getting a document rubber-stamped by the DMV... and just as rewarding.
Is that what it feels like to Feel the Bern?
JUSTICE AT LAST. We can all sleep soundly knowing that if Corey Jones had killed the cop, he'd simply be fired from his job and nothing else would happen.
How long before reinstatement with back pay?
Graphic video has been released showing police in Virginia Tasing a man over and over again outside a hospital where he was originally brought for medical help. The man, Linwood Lambert, 46, died.
We have to apply the law equally. If you repeal one death penalty, you have to repeal them all. Seeing that they're not going to repeal them all...
The University of Missouri has named a new interim president, and he is black.
But his name is Michael Middleton, which just reeks of privileged.
Interim?
INTERIM???
??INTERIM??
This Short Term Placation Shall Not Stand! DEMAND #XVII = MIZZOU NEEDS A PERMANENT COMMITTEE OF TRANSGENDER MESTIZO CRIPPLES TO OVERSEE THE NOMINATION OF PEOPLES OF COLORS TO SERVE FIXED TERMS OF LEADERSHIPS IN PERPETUITY FORTHWITH
He's not black, BTW. He's mulatto, But for his wide nose, he looks like Dwight Eisenhower. The mulattoes must be getting a kick out this.
Even those of he Heroic type?
One-drop rule.
Vox Thoughts
Vox Thoughts
It's been a while since we had a good Sadbeard post here.
It's true. I wonder if he's just faded to a nonentity in his time at Vox.
Faded?
Given the election results I'm seeing, 13 yr-olds voting is the only explanation I have.
Ooop. Refresh, Sevo!
This is how i understood, "Vox Thoughts"
That was my intention.
He's no Jack Handy.
Why, MJ, you hipster! What with your ironic use of the word Thoughts.
Somehow, voting is so trivial that it should be opened up to 13 year olds, and yet so important that nobody can be asked to show ID first, lest it impose an undue burden.
And so important it should be mandatory.
Extra mandatory for those between the ages 12 and 18.
Maybe a requirement to graduate high school.
Do you want Justin Bieber for President? Because that's how you get Justin Bieber for President.
Stupid. He's Canadian. We can't vote for him.
Are any of the One Direction guys American? No, they're all British.
5 Seconds of Summer are Aussies...
Are there ANY Americans that tweens like? (look, I have a daughter, ok?)
Why does it have to be a boy, shitlord?
T-Swift for Prez! We'll never break up with her.
Don't know if T-Swift can handle getting pounded all day every day for eight years. But it would be fun to try.
[punch line to obvious set-up omitted]
The 13 year olds will be able to vote on constitutional amendments as well (I guess).
"Age restrictions on voting are silly. If a 13 year-old wants to take the time to go vote, why not let her?"
Given the results in SF, it could only be an improvement.
OK, but can we bring back the Poll tax? $5 should be enough. A small co-payment works well to keep hypochondriacs out of emergency rooms.
Amendments I would like to see repealed, in order of urgency: 16, 17, 24
If Vox writers can vote, why not 13 yo's?
The political Left must be worried about their electoral prospects for some reason.
Just think - most of the retards whining at Mizzou and Yale about TEH OUTRAGES get to vote for president next year.
Cytofascist, please tell me again why everyone should vote, and only TEH STOOPID don't? Thank you in advance, of enlightened Seer from teh Norf.
"Cytofascist, please tell me again why everyone should vote"
Everyone who is informed and capable of critical thinking should provided there is a difference in options. So yeah maybe you shouldn't.
Also, your post is fucking dumb. You don't even try to set up a logical train. "Idiots are voting so why should I?" Probably to cancel out those idiots, idiot.

The Coming Campus Revolution
College students today, upon learning about systemic oppression of the past, are looking for a way to create their own movement, to belong to something bigger than themselves so that they can look back someday and say they were a part of something.
DING DING DING DING
Steve Sailer has called this phenomenon a 'civil rights re-enactment' in reference to the participation plays Civil War hobbyists enjoy. But I don't think these SJWs regard re-enacting the 1960's civil rights battles as a hobby. It's more of a full-blown fantasy.
Yeah, saw a lot of this in college over BOOOSH and Iraq. Basically people looking to LARP the 60's experience they know from Forrest Gump
Ivy League Student Argues That Ivy League Students Need to Be More Sheltered, and Online Speech Censored
*Penn State* student
The comment was wildly offensive, and if its author had made it out loud, people would have objected.
Does this dipshit really believe people only joke like that online?
But many other people, unmoved by the "dead" bodies of fellow students, walked right through the demonstration. They didn't sidestep the protest ? they acted as though it wasn't there.
Protest good. Counter-protest bad.
We don't attend lectures about concepts like post-traumatic slave syndrome because we believe they "don't pertain" to us.
This gave the game away. Quality trolling B+
You uh... You know... Somebody else...
Of course. Obviously what this tells us is sorority girls hate Mexicans so much that they dress like them, and they know everyone else hates Mexicans too so that's how they get away with it. Who knew so many college students were Trump supporters!

RIP Allen Toussaint
here
are
three
favorites
If you're not aware of Allen Toussaint = Member of the Rock & Roll hall of fame, one of the great American songwriters. Penned & produced tracks for dozens of hit New Orleans based musicians, ranging from Lee Dorsey, Earl King, The Meters/Neville Brothers, Dr John, et al, and had dozens of his own songs turned into hits by artists in different genres across 4-5 decades. You've heard lots of his stuff and probably never known it.
He's sort of a big deal. Here's a documentary
another great one
and another
and... probably one of the most interesting covers of one of his songs
More good news.
Claremont McKenna College student protest leads to dean's resignation
http://www.dailybulletin.com/s.....esignation
These scrunts (meaning the students) have to be told to fuck off: there's a nationwide feeding frenzy and they won't be satiated. Short of pictures surfacing of students wearing SS uniforms, I don't want to fucking hear it anymore (maybe even then-they're just so damn spiffy).
Turn off Federally-cosigned student loans=fixed.
You'd become the Grinch who Stole College. It would be awesome, you'd be a legend!
I honestly think shutting down the higher education - big government complex might be more important than repealing Obamacare. It's that bad.
So, now that I think about it...
In her apartment Huma Abedin commits all these document-felonies interacting with Hillary's email on a computer, and logs off.
Then, perv hubby Anthony Weiner comes in, logs into same computer, gets his Carlos Danger on.
Huma-felony, Danger-Weiner, Huma-felony, Danger-Weiner, over and over again on the same computer. For weeks, months even. It is good thing these people are the ones who decide information-security regulations and laws for the rest of us. Wheee!
Remember when PM links could easily get to 300 posts? This is fucking weak people!
Yeah, what's going on? Does it have to do with daylight savings time or something?
I think people just move on to the next post because nobody's reading this one anymore.
Hmm, left out a comma.
"The University of Missouri has named a new interim president, and he is black."
That'll learn those damn racist!
Gotta love those kangaroo courts.

I hear disappointing things about FallOut 4. Comments?
ITT, Tonio gets Cyto-pwnd (although I can hardly take all the credit. It was a team effort).
Awwww, it's cute that you think that.
I guess we're never going to get a cite on the claim that America has been giving money to Israel 'since the beginning'?
"What is best in life? Crush the peacenazies. See them driven before you. Hear the lamentations of their Tonios."
Here, since you're too lazy to do your own research, or too dishonest to acknowledge this reality.
Note that figures are in millions of US dollars. Again, I'm not vouching for this source, but it's a source (presumably) friendly to Israel. You are welcome to fact check it. Israel claims 1948 as their foundation year, but the US didn't recognize (and, hence, couldn't give foreign aid to) them until 1949 when we gave them a cool 100 million US dollars, which was a lot of money back then, particularly for a bunch of peaceful refugees who just wanted to live in the desert and herd goats as (their more romantic) ancestors did.
Note that it's in Other column. It was disbursed under a program similar to the Marshall Plan, as a part of the whole "let's not let world turn Communist" scheme. As Wiki puts it:
US still refused to sell Israel arms until 1967 (though there was a secret deal with West Germany to offload their M-48 Pattons when they upgraded to Leopard I, which probably had US input). Bulk of their inventory was from France, Belgium and Britain.
USSR was the first country to fully recognize Israel, so putting some money towards keeping it away from Moscow was SOP at the time. Seems more sensible than spending billions to blow up Japan, then billions to rebuild Japan, then banning Japanese from having an army, then stationing an army to defend Japan, then allowing Japan to rebuild its army but forbidding them from calling it an army...
And, because I remember reading about it, I was not fully accurate above. There was one piece of US miltech that Israel bought pre-67, the HAWK SAM system. As the article mentions, first victim was an Israeli plane damaged at the opening of Six Day War - its radio was knocked out, it wandered over Israeli nuclear reactor, crew shot him down.
I'm guessing that's the big 1965 spike in military aid.
"Here, since you're too lazy to do your own research"
Holy fuck you're the one making the claim you whiny cunt.
"cool 100 million US dollars, which was a lot of money back then"
Is it inflation adjusted?
Please read PZ's comment below. He is far more knowledgeable on the matter though that's not saying much. Also note that your source points out that economic aid to Israel from the US was discontinued in 2007.
To the judge that took the child from the homosexual couple, homosexuality as been around long before any of Judeao Christian religions. I personally don't understand homosexuality but I suppose God does and as God will deal with it. The one part of the Bible that most people seem to overlook is that God is the sole judge. Funny that politicians, judges and preacher's seem to think THEY are God. If you think homosexuality is wrong don't do it. Considering the number of foster children abused by straight foster parents could gays be any worse.
