The guy’s spent his entire post-high school education–7 or 8 years– at an institution that he claims is rife with systemic racism. My driver’s license expired today, which I discovered much to my chagrin after sitting down at the bar for a drink. There are a few things you cannot do with an expired driver’s license, and driving is not one of them. I can drive around town without issue, and even if I’m pulled over I’d only be cited and let go. Nobody is going to stop me driving with an expired driver’s license. They will, however, refuse to sell me alcohol. I don’t know if this is true of other states, but the laws are so awful in New Mexico that servers and retailers are afforded no discretion whatsoever in selling alcohol to someone bearing an expired license. So I am now sober and home and contemplating moving to Somalia where conceivably I could get a beer.

It’s an instant 86 here. Not quite being tossed out the door by hulking bouncers, but if you’re not legally allowed to drink at the bar you’re not allowed to sit at the bar. It’s all very infantilizing and really fucking stupid, since the logic behind the law is either not allowing minors to drink or cutting back on the number of DUIs. Somehow refusing to take expired licenses helps. And the state will go after the servers for failing to acknowledge an expired license. Some infractions can net up to five grand in penalties, never mind legal fees. And for some reason the idiot voters here applaud these measures. Because reasons nobody can rationally articulate. I don’t always hate this state, but then again I’m not usually required to be sober by legal mandate.

In the PRM, if you are an undocumented alien, you can drive around with no license, or a fake license. Or if you do actually go to the DMV and pretend to speak no Ingles, they will just give you one. You can also sell your car with the license plates on it or just sell your plates to someone else (both of which are illegal) and nothing else will happen. If you are a citizen though, with all the privileges that brings, you will get into deep shit over these disrespects of auhtoritah.

OMG, we had one of those Reply All email disasters today! Someone sent an email to everyone to go hear some speaker. Someone else hit Reply All to reply in 48 pt font that this person will spew anti-Israel propaganda. This made that person look like a huge fool, IMO. But that was just the beginning. Now all sorts of people start having a Reply All debate. Holy shit. My inbox (everyone’s) was full of nothing but these emails. I was like, Dear God when will it stop?

The last emails were someone said “Hey, it’s Taco Tuesday so relax.” and posted a picture of a taco saying “Why can’t we just taco bout it?” and a nacho saying “No way. I’m nacho friend.” Then someone Replied All to say “That’s incredibly racist. I’m quite offended.” I really couldn’t tell if it was real offense or someone being funny, but given the tone of the whole Reply All debate disaster, I’m guessing it was real.

I now realize that there are some sad, sad people at work, and a whole lot of children in adult bodies.

I actually forget to do it sometimes when I should just because after all these years, I’m very hesitant to use it. I generally use the 10 second rule anyway when it comes to responding to emails. When it’s a time I have to actually be serious with someone concerning their clueless stupidity and total lack of reading comprehension, I take a good time out, which always results in retyping the entire email.

I mean gone are the days when I wrote such quick replies as ‘Is that fucking English that you just wrote? Do you have any clue as to what’s going on about the subject that we are supposed to be discussing? Because you have apparently have no comprehensible way in which to demonstrate that’.

On Thursday, November 9, 1989, the Politburo decided to ease pressure by beginning to allow East Germans to travel in a controlled fashion to the West, after applying and receiving permission from the regime, to take effect after border guards had been retrained. Anyway, the definition I have seen most often for it is the generation that reached young adulthood in the new millennium. Someone born in 95 wouldn’t qualify and the span of time should actually be less than either gen x or the boomers. That said, it’s just a construct people made up. So opinions are going to differ widely. It’s kind of BS

Wikipedia has an entry for generation z as well as millennials. The funny thing is they define gen Z ‘s birth year range as starting before many accounts say that millenials birth year range ends. That indicates to me that it’s pretty damn arbitrary

“Leonard Maltin has commented that the film was “shelved by its studio, [then] sporadically released in [the USA in] 1985”. According to Senses of Cinema, the film was “produced under the aegis of David Begelman’s troubled reign at MGM/UA, Eureka (1983) was shelved for almost two years and then dumped into a handful of cities”.

So hardly anyone saw it, and then there was little demand to bring it out on VHS for whatever reason.

There is another great 1980s movie i found that was like this = The Beast of War (aka “The Beast“)

it’s a grade A production. About *80s Afghanistan*…. and actors actually speak Russian & Pashto… somehow, it never got released. Worth checking out.

Cruz gets slammed a lot in these parts for ‘pandering’ which is dumb because he’s a POLITICIAN THAT’S WHAT THEY DO. He should get slammed for saying dumb stuff like ‘we should elect judges’ and ‘Atheism is bad’. And for having a face that looks punchable, like he’s always taking a painful dump.

Fact is, his stance on subsidies and ethanol subsidies in particular is very bold and righteous. His whole energy package is excellent.

I don’t know what this is or what to make of it, but cavelier linked it in an earlier thread and seemed to find it interesting. I haven’t dug into it enough to summarize it well, but it’s a group building on a theory of generational revolution (in both senses), as each subsequent generation overtakes the previous in a series of archetypes defined as hero, artist, prophet, and nomad. We’re currently at the end of a nomad generation, roughly defined as institutional dissolution and individualism, and working out way back into the hero mold of millennials marked by a newfound appreciation for social structure, family, and community.

This goofy “turning” theory is just another way for the Boomers to claim the world revolves around themselves. Note that the “cycle” is based on themselves, their parents, their children, and their grandchildren.

In the era of mass media and pop culture you can sort-of make an argument for members of a generation having shared characteristics. It’s still not a strong argument because early and late parts of the same arbitrarily-defined generation probably have very different characteristics; to use the Boomer example, some entered adulthood during the Vietnam War rebelling with hippyism, others during Reagan’s first term rebelling with punk rock.

But any attempt to generalize a generation of Americans in the era before radio became widespread is utterly hopeless.

They tweak the length of each generation to fit their narrative, too. Along with picking either British or American “climaxes” and “crises” depending on which one fits the narrative. Neither the American Revolution or the Civil War would have been considered a crisis by the British — Napoleon’s rise between the two would have been much more of a crisis. World War 1, along with Cold War conflicts, also somehow got left out of the list of crises, presumably because that would be very difficult to fit with the year counts.

Basically they’re saying that there is likely to be a big war somewhere in the world between 70 and 100 years after another big war. Wow, that’s deep.
