Along Came a Spider

Logan County, West Virginia, assistant district attorney Chris White has been suspended for pulling out a gun in the DA's office and threatening to shoot the place up. The office had been decorated for Halloween, and the decorations included many fake spiders. White, who reportedly has arachnophobia, said he would shoot the spiders.

[Logan County Chief Deputy M.A.] Mays confirms there is an open criminal investigation, but says it's not concluded. Mays said he "didn't anticipate" charges being filed, but said that could change depending on the outcome of more interviews.

[Logan County Prosecutor John] Bennett says it's a possibility White could be terminated, but at this time, he doesn't intend to fire him.

One wonders if that office ever charge a civilian for the same crime, and if said civilian was able to keep his job.

A phobia is an irrational fear of something that's not a real threat, but cops get away with playing the "feared for my life" card for all sorts of things sillier than an office full of plastic spiders. Good thing he was only arachnophobic and not homophobic.
