Balloon Boy, Part II: The Humanity
Hello.
Look at Reason and there new layout. La-de-dah.
their.
Wtf?
I thought my browser was fucked up.
Why can't it be both?
Let me guess. The smart-alecs here won't/don't like it.
There are less ads, so it's obviously a mistake.
Needs moar woodchipper adz!
fewer, dammit, fewer
[applause]
Don't like it. Nosir, I don't.
Personally, I would use more bacon somewhere.
Here you go.
It's missing something.
A scantily dressed woman perhaps?
That's Black Forest Bacon. It's not missing a god damn thing.
Change is bad. Editing posts is doubleplus bad.
It's wider!
Woohoo!
And yet the website still looks 10 years out of date.
Stay classy reason.
You don't like vitamin piss orange?
Only in incognito mode
Leave Boehner's tan out of this.
OK, for s&g I just visited the home page for the first time in years - and without protection.
Yikes, what a mess.
Shoulda double-bagged it.
The empty gray bar is stylish as fuck.
It looks the same on my phone.
But how does it look in Opera?
It serves me the mobile version regardless of what browser I'm using.
I don't think the mobile site is effed up, only the full site.
Perhaps the wind will change to blow from the NW, taking it over Kentucky. Problem solved!!!
If I'm reading you correctly, people in Western PA tend to be heavily armed, too. Would take a lot of holes in the gasbag to bring it down and that would take days. Now, targeting the engines and controls...
But imagine the lulz if it went near a big city or shorted out a major power line.
There . . . there are no engines or controls. Which wouldn't make sense even if there were - there aren't *people* up there on a joyride.
Its a (formerly) tethered, *unmanned* platform. That is supposed to scan for incoming cruise missiles. That we have nothing to shoot them down with.
Or what you said.
It's an aerostat. There are no engines or controls.
Thanks, lads. Didn't RTFA, obviously. That makes retrieval - interesting.
Nutscaping is a (NSFW) thing.
It's not nice to teabag Mother Nature.
I just realized that line is becoming increasingly obscure - like the phrases "wind a watch" and "dial a phone."
Yeah, it always kinda bugged me that it was "Mother Nature" and "Father Time".
Do you remember the actual margarine ad, Rich?
Parkay, wasn't it? Which is funny because I bought a tub of it out of nostalgia a couple years ago and it tastes like shit.
If you think it's butter, but it's snot, it's Chiffon.
Butter.
Well, my grandfather told me about stuff like this.
My mother told me about having to mix the dye tablets into the margarine during WW2. The stuff came uncolored but included yellow dye in tablet form to make it look like butter.
Yeah, the shit don't taste anything like real butter.
My mother used to tell me the same stories. How you'd put the margarine and the dye tablet together in a bag and smash them together until the goop looked somewhat yellow. She said it was like having Crisco with a yellow crayon melted into it.
Annatto. It's a staple in Yucatan cuisine.
And cheddar, to fool you into thinking you're getting summer cheese!
I never understood the adding yellow to cheddar thing. I always get it white when I can just because it doesn't look fake.
Same thing with margarine - why does it have to be *more* yellow than any real butter?
Training wheels. You can tell when you've mixed a recipe correctly by the color.
Sort of like Kraft Mac N Cheese before all of the crazy moms had the fluorescent orange dye taken out.
Orange cheddar, like really soft bread is an attempt at selling an inferior product as being better than it is that has become a preference in itself.
Cheese used to be yellower (and richer) in the summer when cows were eating fresh grass and paler in the winter. Annatto was a way to add a tinge of orange, people preferred the orangier cheese because they associated it with quality and then it spiraled until you have Kraft. Now it's swinging the other way because people associate the bright orange with the fake versions of cheese and think the white is more natural.
Originally, margarine was only white and didn't sell well ? people associated it with (white) lard, so margarine manufacturers decided to dye it yellow to look like butter in the 1880s. Dairies weren't happy with that so they got laws passed banning yellow margarine so the margarine companies began including a yellow dye until 1955 when the protectionist ban on margarine was repealed.
I'm thinking the very yellow margarine is overcompensation? sticking it to the dairies.
Don't know whether to shit or wind my watch.
"Think I'll shit on my watch" G. Carlin.
Geez with Dawgspound USA and now this... so much "research" to do after work.
I'm not sure what Dawgspound USA is but I wouldn't get your hopes up on this thing.
From this morning, a story about an ex-boxer who "inexplicably" found himself in a gay porn video.
I thought he said he was drugged.
That's *an* explanation.
Look, sometimes you are given drugs, and those drugs make you act in a gay porn. It happens to everyone at some point in their life. Can we please not talk about this anymore?
kthx bye
Let us know then I guess if he looks drugged.
Didn't I read a thing back in the day that in the 90's Czech gymnasts or bodybuilders or some kind of athletes were somehow coerced into doing same-sex adult entertainment films? I think I did, but I don't remember what form the coercion took.
I think the name of the movie they made was "Czech Mate"
Hahahaha. I think I have that on a CD someplace. Although Czech Point was my preferred '90s Eastern European film because of Pavel Novotny. *swoon*
What's the over/under for the number of times the expression "clown car" is used by leftist pundits in the next 24 hours?
A sideways 8. I tried to write the infinity symbol, but the xenophobic Reason commenting system told me to write my comment in English.
Fuckin' Reason commenting system is racist, straight up
Not racists - just statist. Squirrels demand an official language.
oo
All hail the great and glorious squirrels who speak in God's own language, English. Why would anyone speak another language? English is so great.
?
See? You just have to use the right incantations.
Although the infinity symbol (U+221E, HTML ∞) is in the Unicode range of "mathematical operators". Apparently, math is a foreign language to the squirrels.
I'm going to add one more reply to myself to get the "full GKC".
Also: toddler, childish, unserious, disaster.
And as compared the the people/party of science, reason, reality-based, etc. etc. etc.
You want science?
CO2 made Al Gore stupid. Fact.
So that explains the climate change twits!
Looks like a kittycat scratched the hell out of Gore's face in the picture topping that link.
He's wearing more makeup than Pee Wee Herman. The question is why.
Maybe he pulled that crazed sex poodle thing on someone who wasn't afraid to fight back.
Thank you for reminding me that he's the perfect combination of gross and pathetic.
And grownups.
Sexist, racist, homophobic... Oh, wait, some of them actually are.
Former House Speaker Denny Hastert pled guilty to charges related to the alleged payment of hush money in a sex scandal...
But he was so good as President Palmer on 24.
Zero to six months. Probably closer to zero.
Well it should be zero.
A military surveillance blimp has gone rogue over Pennsylvania.
No problem.
"Military Blimp goes AWOL" Granted it's USA today, but that makes it sound like the blimp has agency. Better: "Army loses control of blimp"
And apparently causing power outages to tens of thousands.
She's dragging line. and when that line shorts out electrical power lines...
I wonder if they're testing this as an non-lethal, infrastructure disruption weapon.
[adjusts tinfoil headgear]
I think you're on to something. Too bad you'll get 'disappeared' for this insight, but good call.
I can verify that this works with mylar balloons. SC Edison knocked on my door and asked if I'd celebrated any birthdays recently. Nope, not me!

They're trying to beat "Headless Body Found in Topless Bar".
A judge in Kentucky ruled in favor of the right to shoot down drones.
Yeah, shoot down a government drone and see how absolute that right is.
^This.
Also, I haven't bothered reading the link or the opinion, but I presume this has to be limited to drones that are trespassing on one's property, and not just a blanket declaration that drones are fair game, correct?
Yes, trespassing only.
And government property is special, Citizen, so don't even think about plinking at it.
Government already had this power!
I picture the judge dressing up like Sand People, downing a drone with the long rifle, giving a battle cry, and high tailing it out of there on a Bantha.
Nutscaping is a (NSFW) thing.
There's probably an app for that.
I wonder if I can write a focus-stacking guide specifically for nutscaping and get posted on Buzzfeed.

I for one hereby welcome our robot overlords and would like to state that as a web developer, I could help spread their message.
Members of the city council in Boston gave themselves a $12,000 a year raise.
If you're going to live in a commonwealth called Taxachusetts you have to expect this kind of thing.
Apart from the tax on short-term capital gains, Massachusetts taxes are not that high. Well, compared to other Democrat-run states.
Short-term capital gains are kind of a big deal, though.
Where is Pro Liberate these days?
Swallowed whole by a python. Probably.
He likes it in there.
He mostly comes out at night. Mostly.
Enjoy Hillary supporters naming two accomplishments!
Becoming a lawyer is 'super hard to achieve' and 'she was a good SoS because she didn't fight Obama'.
Jesus Christ.
DOOM!!
Becoming a lawyer is pretty easy if you can read and write. Actually being good at it on the other hand...
This is now becoming obvious to my wife. She just got offered a partnership at a firm where the average associate lasts 4 months.
4 months?! In this legal job market, they only last 4 months? What the hell do they do to those people?
(And are they hiring? Anything's better than doc review...)
You think it was easy to not fight Obama when you have an ego like hers?
"Members of the city council in Boston gave themselves a $12,000 a year raise."
Parasites are gonna parasite.
Somehow I got the idea that they probably had a confuz and left off a zero.
Austria will build a fence along part of its border with Slovenia.
The Slovenians are just looking for some breathing room.
Given the history of the two countries, my first thought was "Slovenians must be pleased, Austria seems not to want to occupy them."
My second thought was "Actually, they might be dissapointed, in fact."
Usually the germans don't secure the border until they're on the other side of it.
Austrians are clean freaks, and, as their name says, Slovenians are slovenly.
The wall just keeps the mess on their side, like your sister having a much better-kept room than you had.
The original Odd Couple!
Well, the Slovenes were part of Habsburg lands longer than any non-Austrian nation (far as I remember), so historically accurate!
Though maybe original Odd Couple in the region is Hungarian/Croat union from 11th century.
I have a good friend who lives near that border. One Sunday afternoon he took us for a ride along a road where the center line (not really marked--it was a back country road between vineyards) WAS the border. This wall's gonna kind of mess that up. Make the wine harder to process, anyway.
OMG, those Gay Pride people are so horrible!
The parade leaders wouldn't let a queer woman of color disrupt their Pride march on behalf of Black Lives Matter! They freaked out because the disruptive woman said "We disrupt your pride."
As a sympathetic (to the disruptors) news story says:
"At this point, an outline of the incident seems fairly clear: Perceiving a threat in the word "disrupt," NC Pride staff overreacted to an unexpected situation, perhaps fearing a Bernie Sanders-like shutdown.
"And in fact, the group did intend to disrupt the parade, if only briefly.
""Were we showing up to completely shut it down? Not at all," Nur says. "But did we want a few minutes, and did it slow everyone else down? Absolutely....""
Verdict: Those Gay Pride people are racist racist racist.
And did we mention racist?
Who's leading the Oppression Olympic medal count, LGTBQ* people or "People of Color"?
A genderfluid demisexual transexual Afro-Latina lesbian.
You have to hand it to the #BLM crowd, by my count, they're making white progressives more uncomfortable than any other group.
Infinitely recursive derp. The real Peak Derp.
Don't you mean a Bernie Sanders type of shakedown?
The claim is that a gay pride leader assaulted a black queer woman just for disrupting their parade? Isn't 'black queer woman' just about the royal flush of victimhood?
"Black Lives Matter" seems to me to have a specific strategy of getting up in the shit of people who would otherwise be supporting them... and looking like complete douchebags in the process.
(See: Bernie Sanders rally disruption, the Minnesota Marathon, now this thing)
Its either that they are completely retarded and have zero self-awareness... or its actually their chosen strategy to rabble-rouse in otherwise very-proggy circles to try and Guilt-Trip their "allies" into some kind of cowed complacency.
Its retarded either way ... its just that i can't tell if its intentional or not.
"Its either that they are completely retarded...or its actually their chosen strategy"
As Abe Simpson says, a little from Column A, a little from Column B.
Jesus Christ. All of the useful idiots have become a cacophony of idiocy; babbling, incoherent gibberish.

Heck of a game eh? The winning "hit" was a sacrifice fly.
Today in Canada, we begin the months-long process of collectively stepping away from promises that brought Shiny One to power.
Refugee settlement groups ask Trudeau not to bring 25000 refugees before Christmas.
Gee, you guys couldn't have mention this BEFORE ELECTION?! Fuck you.
Those posters of him were so creepy. My wife described them as "I can take all your money and sleep with your wife, and we both know it."
Yeh. It does come across as him trying to fight the smug.
That is more accurate description of his dad, but yes, there's family resemblance there.
And husbands would have accepted an indecent proposal from Pierre - or Justin for that matter.
Ha, ha.
Wait until they get to the budget cut thingy.
All those promises will suddenly become 'upon further review we realize we can't'. And if they're really cynical they'll blame Harper.
It happened in Quebec during the student protests. The Hobbit Marois promised them the world and the second she got to power she screwed them over.

GOD SAVE JUSTIN TRUDEAU.

Shocking, it's not like his predecessors or his Daddy did this too.
I was wondering what sort of image would be used on the article. Sure enough, it's a sad muslim woman holding a crying baby. Followed by a lonely child standing alone. Followed by a politician teaching refugee children maths or some shit. Do I even need to read the article to figure out the motives of the person who wrote it?
You want better from the same site?
Tent city springs in Germany
You can guess all you like what lead image is. You will never be right, because you are not cynical enough.
I assume by "peice" she wants a gun. Sorry kid, no self-defense for you. But here, money makes everything better!
She wants a piece of the German's wealth.
Why do you want the crying children to not learn math?
I read that as "learn meth" and started giggling for some reason. I think I need more coffee.
Or meth. Maybe meth. Worked for Germans in WW2 ("Dear mom, hope you are fine, please send me more meth")
Coffee? What the hell time is it where you are? If the sun is up, you misspelled 'vodka'.
According to the Canadian government, 25,000 in two years is damn near impossible.
GAH! HOME PAGE SO WIDE!
That's what she said?
I know, it's weird. Plus the font is bold and bigger.
Does this new webpage design make my content look bigger?
To the contrary.
Sorry.

Oh goodie. We got rid of the orange one and instead we get the statist version of Eddie Munster. Looks like Obama's going to continue to get everything he wants.
Of course the progs called his budget too radical. Libertarian Moment!
In other military aircraft news, Navy jet pilot who buzzed Berkeley broke no federal rules, officials say.
One commenter at the Berkleyside website said the pilot was his brother and that he "thought it would be cool to fly over campus" before transferring to a base in Texas.
Is that really how the Navy runs training missions - "Just go up there and fly around for a while, have some fun" - or does the Navy condone high-dollar joyriding by its pilots?
Yes.
It depends on whether they have the need - the need for speed.
Sonova...
It's like you've never even heard of Top Gun, let alone seen it.
Negative, Ghostrider.
Needs more half-nude beach volleyball.
A navy Pilot was trying to get me to join up, he told me that in the Air Force, you get a really thick book telling you everything you can do. In the Navy, you get a really thin book telling you everything you can't.

NYS Public Pension Fund Suing Oracle for Political Information
Want full disclosures on who execs donate money to.
Some companies voluntarily disclose this sort of stuff, others don't.
YC and CA run the largest public pension funds in the country. ~$200-250bn, respectively. They have also both at times been mired in scandal as the people politically chosen to manage these funds invariably turn out to be scumbags who try using their clout to extract either favors for themselves or for their party.
While the complaint seems to be mired in the idea that, as a large shareholder, NYS is concerned the company spends its money in ways not in shareholder interests, it also strikes me as a kind of "jawboning", suggesting that maybe Larry Ellison et al aren't putting their money *in the right places* to please their Dem-dominated fund-managers.
I think its remarkable how people seem to believe that "Wall Street" is so in need of 'reform' and Democrats seem convinced that the "Fat Cats" are robbing people blind (even if they don't have a dime invested)... yet the worst-actors i've ever seen *by far* are these state-managed Public Fund behemoths. They're far far closer to the actual "demon scumbags" that progs imagine Wall St is full of... yet they're the exactly the people they want to give *more control over everything* to.
Sorry = First link
Also, that was supposed to be "NYS and CA".
Get government money to lobby the government for more money. Quite the racket.
It'll be interesting to see what Ellison does.
Dude is really enemy-centered. Every morning, I suspect he goes to work thinking "how can I fuck over Bill Gates today?".
The question is will he decide he wants his share price not to take a hit if the pension funds sell off his stock to other investors, or if he will decide that he would die first.
I remember those days, when we was obsessed with Gates... and the whole time you got the impression that if you asked Gates about his thoughts on Larry Ellison, Gates would respond with a completely honest, "Who?!"
Bill Gates had his wedding on Lanai. Now Ellison owns it.
"Just try to renew your vows for your 25th wedding aniversary in the same venue, Mister Gates, just try!"
"MWA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!" /strokes drugged & declawed persian cat.
California openly claims its pension fund investments are entirely political. Not sure this is news.
Well, they can get away with it. When they lose money or fail to meet target returns, they just demand more taxpayer money.
Not in exactly the way that you mean.
From what i recall, they've passed resolutions putting guidelines in place that require pension funds to be managed along "Socially Reponsible Investing" standards.... i.e. they can't own Tobacco, Gambling stocks, Gun Companies, etc...must limit exposure to fossil fuels-related things... must own X% "Green" stuff....
...in practice, it simply creates a micromarket for fund companies to sell them baskets of tailored portfolios to meet their various needs. which naturally underperform the market overall.
Reason wrote something about this a few years ago.
For a while I was in a Fidelity Socially Responsible (or something like that) mutual fund because that thing was returning slightly better than the S&P. Eventually it started to suck so I got out, but for a while there it was pretty good.
Not in exactly the way that you mean
they've passed resolutions putting guidelines in place that require pension funds to be managed along "Socially Reponsible Investing" standards

Herr Drumpf was from Kallstadt, Bavaria.
hmm, this actually explains a lot. Both of my grandfathers were full-blooded Germans and both were arrogant assholes. Maybe that personality is a cultural thing.
"For single men the Arctic has excellent accommodations as well as the best restaurant in Bennett, but I would not advise respectable women to go there to sleep as they are liable to hear that which would be repugnant to their feelings ? and uttered, too, by the depraved of their own sex"', Trump [the Donald's grandpop] wrote in a letter to the Yukon Sun newspaper.
No one writes quality prose like that anymore.
