Not only has Jeb Bush trailed Ben Carson in every national GOP presidential poll over the past seven weeks, now it comes out that the giftedly-handed neurosurgeon is raising more money than the would-be third Bush president, $20 million to $13 million in the third quarter. As a result, the former Florida governor has cut his expensive activities way back, while the soft-spoken Carson has…uh, suspended his campaign to go on yet another book tour?

I will be talking about this—likely making the counter-intuitive point that Carson's ha-suspension is much ado about nothing—tonight at around 8:30 p.m. on MSNBC's All in with Chris Hayes.

"Other countries can go to war since they have enemies and interests but we don't" isn't really a very consistent policy. Also I've reading quite a bit of English history. Seems a lot of the suspicions of standing armies was more a fear that Charles I and James II would use them to make everyone Catholic rather than actual opposition to the concept of standing armies. For example the English Civil War broke out in part over the raising of an army to crush rebellious Irish Catholics. And Oliver Cromwell was quite willing to use the standing armies to rule England. Though the Puritanism enforced by some of these armies (i,e. banning Christmas and theatres) also contributed to the hostility to standing armies.

Oh and the English Whigs weren't particularly anti-war either. There was the hostility to the French and also the Dutch. In fact many Whigs went from warring with the Dutch to inviting a Dutch King to rule them!

Oh and I read to about how after the Glorious Revolution the Tories would oppose standing armies (controlled by the Whigs by now) in favor of building up the Royal Navy.

I turned 21 and voted for Jimmy Carter. A few months later, a jury summons came in the mail. On the way to the courthouse, I was stopped on the bridge going into town for 15 minutes due to road work. This meant I was 5 minutes late to the courthouse. The judge called me up to the bench and asked why I was late, and I explained why due to road work on the only bridge into town. He said my explanation was unacceptable. I said what was I supposed to do, jump out of the car and swim across? His response: Contempt of Court. I was cuffed, and taken to jail, fingerprinted, photographed, cavity search, orange jumpsuit, etc. Luckily I had a dime in my pocket and called an attorney friend on the way into the slammer.

There I was greeted by my fellow inmates with "what are you in for?" I said I'll tell you if you tell me what you're in for. As we go around the table, I hear forged checks, armed robbery, attempted murder, etc. and then it gets back to me. "The bridge was closed this morning for road work and I was 5 minutes late to jury duty." Peels of laughter all around. Of course no one believed me.

We were told to strip naked to all take a shower together, after which gruel was served. I whiled away the hours by discussing criminality with my fellow inmates until 8 hours later, when I was told to put my "street clothes" back on.

Then I was cuffed and stuffed back into the back of the squad car for the ride back to the courthouse. On route, the squad car was stopped for 15 minutes due to...road work!

So they were late getting me back to the courthouse. When I got to the anteroom of judge's chambers, the cuffs were taken off and I saw my attorney waiting. We go into the chambers and the judge says "why were you late getting back to the courthouse?" I said what was I supposed to do? I was handcuffed in the back of a squad car that was stopped due to road work. My attorney elbowed me hard to shut up and took over the talking to smooth it over. I wondered how come the abortions he allegedly did were illegal, and the article said the medical board had, because of certain misconduct, forbidden him from doing abortions outside of a clinical setting. Apparently he had been doing abortions in his home.

A couple thoughts: (a) You mean that physicians normally *are* allowed to do abortions in their homes? and (b) how can cops tell that aborted babies in a car are from illegal abortions, as opposed to legal abortions? The babies are just as dead in either case. (c) Maybe he was just taking baby parts over the local baby-parts store to sell them.

Too funny. Here in SF we have a Sheriff who got questioned by deputy running the range if he was allowed to have a gun because of his criminal conviction. He demoted the guy for his insubordination and also failed the qualifying test to carry. He just got his drivers license back so there is still something he can do.
