The Pope's White House Speech Was Explicitly Political
Pope Francis will urge Congress to address climate change.

Pope Francis addressed President Obama and a crowd of 15,000 people on the South Lawn of the White House Wednesday morning. His short speech hit on several contentious topics—immigration, marriage, and most notably, climate change:
I am deeply grateful for your welcome in the name of all Americans. As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest in this country, which was largely built by such families. I look forward to these days of encounter and dialogue, in which I hope to listen to, and share, many of the hopes and dreams of the American people.
Mr. President, I find it encouraging that you are proposing an initiative for reducing air pollution. Accepting the urgency, it seems clear to me also that climate change is a problem which can no longer be left to a future generation. When it comes to the care of our "common home," we are living at a critical moment of history. We still have time to make the changes needed to bring about "a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change" (Laudato Si', 13). Such change demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition not only of the kind of world we may be leaving to our children, but also to the millions of people living under a system which has overlooked them. Our common home has been part of this group of the excluded which cries out to heaven and which today powerfully strikes our homes, our cities and our societies. To use a telling phrase of the Reverend Martin Luther King, we can say that we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it.
President Obama welcomed the Pope's dedication to the cause in his own remarks:
And, Holy Father, you remind us that we have a sacred obligation to protect our planet – God's magnificent gift to us. We support your call to all world leaders to support the communities most vulnerable to a changing climate and to come together to preserve our precious world for future generations.
The pope's desire to use the levers of government to shape social progress on these issues may be well-intentioned, but—as Reason's Stephanie Slade explained in her awesome piece on the pope's contempt for capitalism—the free market has been a far more powerful friend of equality, justice, prosperity, human happiness, and even the environment, than U.S. Congress.
Stay tuned for more of Reason's coverage of the papal visit.

What a fucking coward. He ignores that Congress just failed to protect the lives of children born alive from botched abortions - instead he talks about imaginary environmental problems.
He is going to do a lot of damage to the church.
My guess is that the church is already damaged and he is a symptom of the rot.
As the church slides further into irrelevancy, its officers will be willing to embrace bolder revisions or changes in an attempt to reinvigorate it.
It should be pretty entertaining to watch.
If the Jesuits go back to their roots, we might get some nifty music and buildings out of the new Counter-Reformation!
Hilarious part will be if Catholics follow Anglicans, and have a schism between dying, SJW-friendly church in the North, and the vigorous, growing and conservative as hell church in the South. I might get my wish and see an anti-Pope in my lifetime! It's like seeing a mammoth again.
As the church slides further into irrelevancy, its officers will be willing to embrace bolder revisions or changes in an attempt to reinvigorate it.
I think this is basically right. And the ironic part is that that scramble only hastens the church's demise. If you look at the growth of religion in the U.S. it hasn't much tracked adherence to secular fashion. If anything, the correlation seems to run the other way. It's religions that hold themselves out from the mainstream that tend to draw in new followers. And, in a way, it makes sense. What 's the point in sitting around on a on an uncomfortable bench on a Sunday morning if all you're doing is hearing the same conventional wisdom you hear the rest of the week.
I for the life of me cannot understand why we would allow the head of a Pedophile organization to enter the United States. It says a lot about Obama doesn't it.
Mothers, don't allow your children in the vicinity of either one of these men!
Yeah, you would assume that the failure of congress in regard to this as well as continued funding of Planned Parenthood and failure to protect fetuses after 20 weeks would be of slightly more concern to the Catholic Church.
Only if it wants to be irrelevant to its adherents.
Wasn't there some medieval prophecy that said the last Pope would be the, well , last Pope?
"Whoever's wearing the hat when the music stops..."
What a load of papal bull.
I saw what you wrote there.
I read what you saw there.
Yes, his anger is palpable.
I'm tired of all your pontificating.
You get off without a narrowed gaze....this time.

Pope Francis Reverses Position On Capitalism After Seeing Wide Variety Of American Oreos
"Oh, my goodness, look at all these! Golden Oreos, Cookie Dough Oreos, Mega Stuf Oreos, Birthday Cake Oreos?perhaps the system of free enterprise is not as terrible as I once feared," said the visibly awed bishop of Rome while visiting a Washington, D.C. supermarket, adding that the sheer diversity of flavors, various colors and quantities of creme filling, and presence or absence of an outer fudge layer had led to a profound philosophical shift in his feelings toward the global economy and opened his eyes to the remarkable capabilities of the free market. "Only a truly exceptional and powerful economic system would be capable of producing so many limited-edition and holiday-themed flavors of a single cookie brand, such as these extraordinary Key Lime Pie Oreos and Candy Corn Oreos. This is not a force of global impoverishment at all, but one of endless enrichment.
I must admit that Candy Corn Oreos have me believing in the afterlife, specifically the hellish ring made exclusively for the damned soul who ruined an Oreo by stuffing it with candy corn.
Yesterday I saw gyro flavored potato chips
Had some. We have a chip bakery in Jonesboro, Arkansas. We have had a lot of the new flavors at our local sub shop!
And the left's cries of separation of church and state went silent...
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion unless progressives want it to 'cause that's completely different and totally okay. This is what many people I know actually believe.
Well, I'm not on the left, but this shit pisses me off. When does Richard Dawkins address Congress? When does Congress sit through a couple of semesters of college physics or chemistry?
A whole building full of fucking shamans deciding how I should sacrifice to support them.
Fucking slavers. And congress too.
If Richard Dawkins addressed Congress, would his speech be substantially different from the Pope's? It would still be political in nature. It would still address income inequality and climate change, etc. It would still invoke religion, but in the form of progressivism, rather than Catholicism.
I think the Pope managed not to 'offend without offending' any Muslims. I can't imagine Dawkins getting in front of Congress and passing up that opportunity. I'm ~60% certain, in his hubris and intellectual hugeness, he would probably have a friendly backhanded compliment or two for Trump.
its a minor point, but the Pope IS the leader of a sovereign state. its all still ridiculous though.
Good enough. Is he here to discuss trade? Perhaps reparations for the art and literature thefts over the years? A plan for the Catholic church to divest itself of all worldly goods and properties globally in the causes of the poor?
No, I thought not.
Dawson's is a hateful crank without a constituency.
"Dawkin's"
Damned autocorrect.
You dissing Family Feud?
I think he's dissing that Creek that used to have it's own TV show for the young 'ns.
remember how the left complained, hell screamed separation, when Netanyahu spoke before congress and now they are a bunch of suck ups to a hypocrite catholic because of his anti capitalist ideas.
When will these right wing rat fucking tea naggers get religion out of politics!!!
Christ, what an asshole!

Replace your "r"s with "w"s and you nailed it.
"Weepwacing youw owwws wiv double you's is what bwings us togevver today...."
And here's the FB meme
I'm assuming the conservative popes had higher approval ratings than any Congress, Democratically-dominated or otherwise.
Well, as has been said by someone, "Liberals' historical memory begins when they wake up in the morning."
What fight are they picking?
If the GOP is conducting a "war on women," the Pope is their ally.
Or are these morons now saying that the Pope is an authority on scientific issues?
Apparently his economic rhetoric trumps gay and reproductive rights..
That meme is also stupid because it gives no information about who supports the Pope over the GOP congress. I doubt GOP voters hold this Pope in high regard. They (and libertarians) don't like this Pope's calls for redistribution and more state-control of the global economy.
Yeah. Congress always has a low approval rating.
who?
The Pope, he used to be a pro wrestler with a pimp gimmick.
He used to tag team with The Iron Sheik.
ohhh /Edith Bunker
Well, he is a politician, so what did you expect?
My favorite derpbook meme is one mocking Socons who disagree with the pope putting Christianity ahead of capitalism as hypocrites.
Apparently if protestants question the pope's authority or disagree with his pronouncements, it indicts their faith.
I was raised southern Baptist and we was taught the pope ain't shit.
Hell, some fundamentalists believe the anti-christ will be one of the popes.
That would be the devil's second best trick.

He will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing? he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance? Just a tiny bit. And he will talk about all of us really being salesmen. And he'll get all the great women. "

Bill Clinton?
Monica Lewinsky and Shrillary "great women".
Idolaters, all of 'em.
I was raised southern Baptist and we was taught the pope ain't shit.
I had a Southern Baptist English teacher literally literally describe him as, "The Grand Dragon of The Catholic Church."
One of the best, most hilarious, Church and State moments of my young life.
Awesome.
I was raised southern Baptist and we was taught the pope ain't shit.
That's funny, I was raised Catholic and I kind of reached that same conclusion. In individual pope might be intelligent or morally admirable. It isn't inherently a feature of the office.
Kinda like president, or senator, or...
sustainable development? which would you rather do employ people to log trees which slows down wildfires or not log the trees which allows for uncontrolled massive wildfires and massive erosion problems in the aftermath and nobody gets to us the wood in the end. California for "Environmental" reasons chose the latter and we have seen the results of that decision loggers are unemployed and forest and lives and animals are destroyed. tell me again how the government solution is always the best solution.
There is the third option of not suppressing fires so vigorously so that the natural fire cycle can happen. Though obviously that doesn't work in built up areas.
it also did not work int he past. prior to 1920 thats what was the practice until a large fire on the east coast killed 200 people thats when the government said lets stop them where we can. BTW your small fire solution still doesn't give us the opportunity to use the wood which is actually better for the environment if you believe in the CO2 capture bullshit since logged wood keeps the CO2 stored in products where fires release the captured CO2. So based on that we should be logging which employs more people and is less dangerous that fire fighting and does a better job of protecting the environment.
I don't think small fires hurt the trees. In fact some species require fire in order to reproduce. The real problem is the overgrowth of the underbrush.
No, no, no!
Those fires are because of global warming!!!
The solution he's looking for was invented 50 years ago, the molten salt thorium reactor.
I admit it's more creative than a woodchipper, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the cost.
Have you not watched The China Syndrome? SMH
That's the beauty of it. It's impossible for an MSR to melt down since it's already molten. If the fuel escapes containment it actually freezes.
When they make a movie about that I will believe it.
That would be one short movie.
Interior, control room
"Sir we've lost fuel containment! Wait, everything is fine the fuel has solidified and fission has stopped"
Cut to credits
That would be one short movie.

So short, you could play it again!
Who on that stage has the bigger head, you think? The Pope sees himself as the infallible messenger of the Almighty God, ruler of heavens and the Earth. But Obama is Obama.
And I'll repeat what others have already said: mighty convenient he chose not to weigh in on funding Planned Parenthood.
And I'll repeat what others have already said: mighty convenient he chose not to weigh in on funding Planned Parenthood.
I guess he wanted to focus on issues that are also important globally like immigration (Syrian refugees, African immigrants) and climate change. And it's not like stopping funding to Planned Parenthood would stop abortions.
Aren't itty-bitty babies important all over the globe? And I thought He is against all contraception, not just abortion. He also made no comment about US law redefining the very institution of marriage.
Aren't itty-bitty babies important all over the globe?
If you're referring to abortion, then no, abortion isn't really a pressing issue in much of the world--(maybe it's a mix of global and pressing--additionally, you specifically referred to funding of Planned Parenthood, which is definitely not a global issue). But furthermore, in addition to abortion being legal without much controversy in most of Asia and Europe, it's not a pressing issue like immigration or (according to others) climate change. Abortion's been around and legal for quite some time, so I can see the pope talking about immigration and climate change as more pressing and global issues. And again, abortion came into the spotlight in the U.S. recently because of Planned Parenthood, which is not global.
If you believe abortion is the murder of the children as the pope does it is in fact a much more pressing issue than "climate change" which may or may not cause problems a century or so from now.
And so what if abortion has been around and legal for some time? Climate change has been around and legal for a lot longer.
Per your first paragraph.
Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama go to heaven,
God addresses Al first. "Al, what do you believe in?"
Al replies: "Well, I believe that I won that election, but that it was your will that I did not serve. And I've come to understand that now."
God thinks for a second and says: "Very good. Come and sit at my left."
God then addresses Bill. "Bill, what do you believe in?"
Bill replies: "I believe in forgiveness. I've sinned, but I've never held a grudge against my fellow man, and I hope no grudges are held against me."
God thinks for a second and says: "You are forgiven, my son. Come and sit at my right."
Then God addresses Barrack. "Barrack, what do you believe in?"
He replies: "I believe you're in my chair."
I am certain that as much as the Pope's comments in Cuba were pre-negotiated with the regime, it was the same here in the USA.
All I want to know is when are those VW executives going to be indicted for crimes against humanity? We're talking about an emissions holocaust, here.

Sin, having been entirely eliminated, the pope converts to the worship of Gaia, donning a magic crusader's cape to defend her. How absurd!
Next he is going to be telling us about ManBearPig.
Pope Francis can go DIAF.
I think he's covered for that.
Nicely done.

"And, Holy Father, you remind us that we have a sacred obligation to protect our planet ? God's magnificent gift to us. We support your call to all world leaders to support the communities most vulnerable to a changing climate and to come together to preserve our precious world for future generations."
This is all build up for the UN Climate Change Conference in December.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ 2015_United_Nations_Climate_Change_Conference
Obama has already promised to forge a climate change "agreement" at that conference that doesn't require Congress' consideration. In fact, he promised to forge that agreement before the last Congressional election.
"WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is working to forge a sweeping international climate change agreement to compel nations to cut their planet-warming fossil fuel emissions, but without ratification from Congress.
In preparation for this agreement, to be signed at a United Nations summit meeting in 2015 in Paris, the negotiators are meeting with diplomats from other countries to broker a deal to commit some of the world's largest economies to enact laws to reduce their carbon pollution. But under the Constitution, a president may enter into a legally binding treaty only if it is approved by a two-thirds majority of the Senate."

Our "sacred duty"? Who told that twit I bleeve in his religion?
Why's Obama calling him "Holy Father"?
Because her hates be called Francis.
I can't find the link right now, but there was a story back in the summer that the Vatican made a decision to exclude climate change skeptics from their conference/round-table. I think there was one guy who was invited whose invitation was rescinded when the Vatican became aware he was a skeptic.
+1 Galileo
Incidentally, is it okay to ask Catholic Presidential candidates if they believe in the separation of church and state? Or is that bigoted?
I know Obama isn't supposed to be a Muslim and all, but then he's not supposed to be a Catholic either! Is it okay to ask him whether he still believes in the separation of church and state--or is that being a bigot?
I mean, once a President starts using the Pope as a prop for political purposes, why wouldn't it be okay to ask Obama if he still believes in the separation of church and state?
+1 Billy Graham
I don't know if that's snark.
Per our conversations on this board yesterday regarding whether it's legitimate for Ben Carson to question a Muslim's commitment to the separation of church and state, I think asking candidates about their commitment to the separation of church and state is a legitimate question to ask any candidate who comes from a background that doesn't embrace it.
...and that's regardless of anything Billy Graham or any other protestant ever said about Catholics.
I also think it's appropriate to call out the President for using the Pope as a prop in a political campaign. If a Republican President used the Pope in a fight against abortion, the progressives would be screaming bloody murder.
And you know what? They'd be right!
I'm merely referring to the usage of Billy Graham as political prop in the past. While Graham was never as politically outspoken as the current Pope, both he and the former Presidents made no bones about using each other as show trophies.
I will agree that the current administration and Pope are more egregious in their campaigning. The evangelical equivalent would be Falwell addressing Congress, which I believe he has.
I want to know their commitment to the separation of economy and state.
You already do.
As an atheist, I expect every politician to be asked about their commitment to the separation of church and state. I absolutely consider the statements of politicians about how their religion "informs" their legislative contemplations to be disqualifiers that should result in immediate censure.
I don't want the whisperings of anyone's imaginary friend affecting my life.
Has any president ever not used religion for political purposes? Is the bar now "must never invoke the supernatural"? Because, while I'm pretty into that bar, most people don't actually require it.
Whenever they've used religion in the past to justify public policy, yeah, I've consistently been against doing that.
.
I'm against it now.
And this really is about the Paris 2015 Climate Change "agreement".
He is clearly using the Pope to drum up support for the Paris 2015 Climate Change agreement, and I won't shut up about it.
Does Obama believe in the separation of church and state or doesn't he?
Do we want the President to use the government to impose religious beliefs on the unwilling or don't we?
But I'm asking, is this what anyone means by "separation of church and state"?
We don't, after all, require people to give up their religion to hold office. They're almost all religious.
Only proggies when the religious figure is one they don't agree with.
Having a religion as President isn't a problem.
Presidents using religious leaders to justify, create, and support public policy is another question entirely.
This Pope has made climate change a religious issue for Catholics.
"And, Holy Father, you remind us that we have a sacred obligation to protect our planet ? God's magnificent gift to us."
Those are Barack Obama's words.
It isn't an expression of personal belief. It's drumming up support for public policy a specific Climate Change treaty. He's using religion to justify, create, and support public policy.
Are both a problem, or only the first one? Because pretty much everyone does the second one. What public policy isn't sold on the basis of an allegedly shared morality?
It isn't about morality.
It's about a specific public policy.
If I think a President is formulating public policy based on religion, then I'm going to criticize him for formulating policy based on religion.
I posted in answer to Ken above, but to recap, I think any "informing" of policy, using biblical quotes in legislature, etc., is absolutely wrong.
No one's gods need to be involved in my life or the use of state power against me.
I would argue the point about them all being religious. They all belong to some church or another because that's what is expected of them. Just like they all have pet dogs. This is what we have told them is important to us.
It would be interesting to see if we get an atheist first or someone who says he supports our right to have pets but that he personally can't stand to be around dogs.
You mean a Muslim? They don't like dogs. Seriously, that's why s Muslim will never be elected POTUS
California for "Environmental" reasons chose the latter and we have seen the results of that decision loggers are unemployed and forest and lives and animals are destroyed. tell me again how the government solution is always the best solution.

Forever etched in my mind was a response to some question or other on the busride home from a meet:
"So, are we having practice tomorrow?"
"Does a bear shit in the woods? Is the pope dead?"
I'm still laughing about that one, and still think of it every time someone asks as rhetorical question.
"Are Progs stupid?" "Is the pope dead?"
I thought it was Does the pope shit in the woods?
Bailey needs to send the Pope a copy of his new book. Though he is probably enough of a watermelon that it wouldn't sink in that capitalism and development have been the cause of lots of environmental improvements over the past half century or so.
I'm hoping for a sister Dolezal moment where we find out this Pope is actually a Zorastrian.
No one is waiting for libertarians to come to their senses about the dangers of climate change. Even the religious can accept what the overwhelming majority of science has to say on this subject. If Reason is indicative of what libertarians think (see Stossel), then the world will pass you by.
So don't complain about the solutions being proposed. You're not even at problem recognition yet. By the way, there are a few (just a few) libertarians who do recognize the problem. Their proposal? Using a government lever, like the Pope suggests...a carbon tax. Seems even Bailey supports that government lever. Know why? The free market isn't cutting it.

I thought I must have missed an mtrueman post - he outed himself as a Khmer Rouge apologist yesterday.
As for joe, it's pathetically funny that he is trying to promote the green religion as the evaporation of its scientific justification becomes undeniable to anyone with a passing interest on the subject.
As for joe, it's pathetic
That really all you needed to say.
Yes the Pope is being explicitly political.
It certainly has nothing to do with Christianity as there is nothing in that religion that has anything to do with advocating using force (whether wielded by government or any other party) to make anyone else do anything or abstain from doing anything.
Guess you forgot about eternal damnation.
I guess you forgot to pack your spare brain cell.
The continued practice of apologetics is intellectually debilitating.
"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience."
Says the microprint at the bottom of every government form ever.
