Debate Recap: Fiorina, Paul, and Carson Put The Donald on His Heels
They treated Trump more like a beloved house pet than a serious competitor.
After three of the dumbest months in modern American political history, something kind of wonderful happened Wednesday night at the Reagan Library: Carly Fiorina took a machete to the Donald Trump balloon.
By treating him more like an embarrassing if beloved house pet than a serious competitor, Fiorina, Rand Paul, and even Ben Carson put The Donald on his heels at Wednesday's debate, leaving him with little more misfired put-downs and bizarro anti-vaccine riffs. For whole stretches of a time, the oxygen-hog was silent, leaving the candidates to talk about—of all things!—ideas. So that's the good news. The bad news? Well, the ideas.
Did you know that ISIS was on the verge of toppling Western Civilization? That immigration has destroyed us as a country? That the military has been cut down so brutally that the Marines can barely tie their own shoes anymore? These surreal assertions and more were treated as fact by wide swaths of the GOP field.
But amid the nonsense there were glimmers of hope. Rand Paul showed some belated signs of life, pointing out accurately that if you want to go to war in Iraq again, there's a Bush and a Clinton and 14 other candidates ready and willing. An honest-to-goodness discussion about drug policy revealed Chris Christie as the lying bully he is. Some candidates even talked about the $18 trillion debt, and unsustainable entitlements. Of all things.
But the candidate who gave us the most reason to hope wasn't Carly Fiorina, or Rand Paul, or even Ben Carson: It was Lindsey Graham.
"We're going to drink more," Graham told the crowd. "That's the first thing I'm going to do as president."

What do you mean I'm obsessed with Donald Trump? I can't help it, he's everywhere, everywhere, do you hear me? Ha ha ha ha, everywhere, ha ha ha...
Back away from the keyboard.
Backing away, love, means a sorts of messy lovely goo your precious little eyes aren't ruint by. A most ethereal affair. I for one am pleased by NOT madness....
He's Trump, He's Trump
He's in my head
He's Trump, He's Trump, He's Trump
He might be dead
Trump lingered last in line for brains
and the one he got was sorta rotten and insane
So Trump is at 30 plus percent but Graham is charging forward with 0.3 percent

TEAM RED is gettin' beat like a rented mule.
I did get a kick out of Jeb! throwing out the line "By the way he's (Obama's) an American and a Christian" the other day.
Outstanding job pandering to your media supporters Jeb, but I have serious doubts that defending Block Yomomma is going to do much to turn around your disastrous polling number trend among republican primary voters. Whoever is running your campaign and feeding you your punch lines should be fired immediately.

The GOP establishment is under the delusion that if they suck up the media and get in spats with their own base that the left will love them, then act shocked when the left mocks and humiliates them. Just look at John McCain.
I'm pretty excited that we seem to have all coalesced behind our Plan B candidate in Carly fiorina. I mean, she's essentially a carbon copy of every other Republican big-government, drug warrior, saber-rattling militarist, but at least she's for keeping tax exemptions for billionaires, who will probably emigrate to Timbuktu if they actually have to pay taxes.
She's the anti-abortion (for now) feminist establishment candidate.
And she's the victim of a bad botox job too.

"i'm pretty excited..."
Pay your mortgage yet, or are you still letting every one else carry your sorry ass?
I'm pretty excited that we ...
Who's this we you speak of? Are you self-identifying as a hardcore Republican?
He's self-identifying as a jackoff sockpuppet.
For socialists there is only the collective.
We?

Nothing says libertarian moment like a coordinated pile on of establishment candidates and their court jesters in the msm.

WIH was this supposed to mean?
Graham crackers.
He's going to sit down and have a drink with the people in order to work out understanding and compromise. You know, like leaders used to do before there was Twitter.
Uh, oh.
So we're going to get a 'non-partisan' reaming? I don't like the sound of that...

Standard conservative nonsense.
They have nothing else to run on.
BENGHAZI!!! DERP! ARGLE! BARGLE!
On this we can agree. Well, Rand has other stuff he can run on, but he knows he has to walk a fine line in order to have any chance at grabbing the base.
It's going to be amusing watching the Dem's pretend to argue against Obama's military adventures.
Hair's the thing, if I were going after Donald Trump I'd let him know there'd be hell toupee if he wanted to get into a cat fight. Criticize me and I'll comb over there and give you one right back. Trump would just wig out about having the rug pulled right out from under him, don't ya think?
"Mister Trump - is that a merkin on your head, or are you just happy to see me?"
VERY nice!
You're going bald, Mr. Trump.
Hair today, gone tomorrow.

Why is it that these days I have to double check to see if I'm reading Reason, National Review or Salon? The articles on the Republican primary race seem pretty much interchangeable. Given that Trump is leading his nearest competitor by a handy 10 points, you'd think at least one media outlet might have something good to say about him. I'm beginning to think "two party system" means "the media and everyone else".
Because Trump and Carson leading the GOP also-rans by miles is proof that the GOP is completely bereft of ideas except for deporting immigrants and Whoopin' Ass in the Middle East.
Oh, and Planned Parenthood.
That too.
GIT THEM GOP VOTERS ALL RILED UP!
Trump's polls are frequently showing him beating Hillary as well, so he isn't just appealing to Republicans.
But the point is, you'd think that such a popular point of view would be reflected somewhere in the media. But all of the media seems to be singing from the same choir book. Don't you find it a little bit odd that opinions held by such a large portion of the public are reflected nowhere in the media? You don't have to like Trump to smell something funny there.
Nothing funny at all.
Trump appeals to only the riff-raff of the electorate. Why should the media exalt him like the riff-raff does?
Trump appeals to only the riff-raff of the electorate. Why should the media exalt him like the riff-raff does?
They said the same thing about Andrew Jackson before he put his stamp on an entire political era and inspired the formation of a party specifically designed to oppose him and his acolytes.
Now Trump is obviously no Jackson. But people who dismiss the "riff-raff" typically end up eating big batches of crow in the end, wondering how the rubes ended up spoiling the White House curtains.
Good point. In a democracy, the riffraff vote is important. See also: 2008.
"You don't have to like Trump to smell something funny there."
Lemme guess: Everyone is conspiring against him? Can't be he's an idiot and a lot of people have figured it out, can it?
When 'journalists' all across the political spectrum are writing near identical attack pieces, it sure smells like a conspiracy.
But that's just crazy wrong-think - it's not like journos have been caught coordinating their stories through a secret club before.
"But that's just crazy wrong-think - it's not like journos have been caught coordinating their stories through a secret club before."
Yeah, every outlet sends a rep and they agree; no Donald before page 5 right?
Do you look under your bed before hitting the sack?
Yep, the only way the could coordinate is with reps from every two bit outfit gathering in some some filled room.
It's not like theirs some tech that would let them post on a message board or anything.
"It's not like theirs some tech that would let them post on a message board or anything."
Oh, oh! Now we have a secret message board!
Tell us, Z, how did you come to figure this out? Oh, I'll bet you've pierced the shield and found the site; where is it?
I'm asking for a friend...
I think he's referring to the Journolist
Yes, he means JournoList. But in Trump's case they don't really have to coordinate, because he pushes all the right buttons and they just react naturally. Trump has something for all sides to hate.
Weigel is really butthurt because he was so certain that Jeb Bush was going to win the nomination, and that prediction is looking more stupid with each passing day.
He's also ready for Hillary, and that ship seems to be taking on water.
"Trump's polls are frequently showing him beating Hillary as well,
Going to go on a limb and call BS on that.
That limb done broke.
"...you'd think at least one media outlet might have something good to say about him."
*You* might think so, but fortunately no one else seems to.
The man's an embarrassment without the sense to be embarrassed.
Given that apparently a heathy plurality of people who are going to be voting for the next president don't appear to be embarrassed, yeah I do think so. You find it reasonable that an opinion held by that many people has no representation in the media? Do those people not have access to media themselves? Why not?
I don't know the answers to your questions, but I strongly suspect you have a "theory" about this, am I right?
Hell, some majority of the voting public found Obo worth voting for, too; so what?
Hell, some majority of the voting public found Obo worth voting for, too; so what?
Please. The media was giving Obama rimjobs the day he stepped on stage at the 2004 DNC. He owes his entire post-2004 political career to their goodwill and deference.
What's been different with Trump's candidacy is that he gained as much support as he did in spite of riling up the media and the GOP donor class to no end so far.

True enough, but still no reason to presume his lack of press promo is anything other than the fact that he's an embarrassment.
Obo also had his champions in the press, and so did his competitors. Hell, we're talking about a country where the National Enquirer is extremely profitable operation! You don't think someone, somewhere who owns a printing press would find it profitable to champion opinions held by large portion, if not a majority, of the country? If you can make money publishing tales of aliens visiting the white house, I'd certainly expect you can make money publishing widely held political positions. Yet, you don't see that happening.
I have no over-arching theory about how the media came to such a point of convergence. But they certainly appear to be a very insular bunch.
But Sevo knows that the media are saints whose only goal is enlightening the masses with their truth telling. So if the media universally shares some opinion, by god it's because that is the only valid opinion possible.

How many tinfoil hats does it take to get as abysmally stupid as you?
You're awefully invested in disproving the idea of any coordination by the media, despite near identical articles being posted on libertarian, conservative and progressive sites.

It was my turn.
That's the message.
As far as the msm goes, I think Trump has been given much more respect than he deserves. I don't think they want him to win but I do think they want him in for as long as possible because his stories sell plenty of trucks and bud light.
The MSM also loves Trump because he discredits the GOP.
To be fair, Trump's not discrediting the GOP any worse than they've accomplished themselves the last 30 years or so.
No representation in the media?
The mainstream media is covering him non-stop. Not in the most flattering way, but it seems to be working for him. It's probably the best thing they could do for him. I doubt that most Trump supporters would think much of a flatteriing profile in the NY Times or something.
The news outlets that are piling on Trump are the same ones that are coordinating the polls that show him having a 10 point lead over his rivals. If one can't trust the media with regard to it's reporting, why can one trust it's polling numbers?

I'd like to respond, but I'm busy chugging Barack's cum. Or whatever the hell.
Possibly because there is nothing good to say about him.

Did Graham really say that? I didn't watch.

Two Families Sue a Neighbor to Have Their Autistic Son Declared a Public Nuisance
But the couple was still handed a lawsuit last summer by two couples who lived next door, saying their son's behavior was having an effect on the neighborhood's "hot" real estate market and that "people feel constrained in the marketability of their homes as this issue remains unresolved and the nuisance remains unabated."
Wow. Good thing I don't ever think people can't get even shittier than they already are.
All the pain has been committed, therefore it is recursive and will forever remain so.
Well I guess they should feel fortunate they didn't call CPS. Those people make lawyers look less skeezy.
I'd suggest a counter-suit:
Who in hell would want to live next to assholes who'd sue you if your kid didn't measure up to their taste?
Those twits just drove down the value of the kid's property by a huge amount!
Two Families Sue a Neighbor to Have Their Autistic Son Declared a Public Nuisance
I think Reason just found their new intern...
How did a house get to be an investment the purpose of owning which was to sell for a profit as soon as possible? I remember when it was a place to live, and a person generally bought or built one with the intention of not selling it, unless he was some kind of money-grubbing slumlord like my father.
Also, seem like in those days there was folks who actually owned their houses and weren't just tenants of the bank. Now I know folks act like owning your house in the clear is a problem calling for immediate solution in form of some kind of mortgagery or credit line or something on it.
For the purposes of a person who actually owns his place and intends to stay there, increased property value is of questionable real value and may actually be a disadvantage.
On the other hand, i hear folks bring out the lowering property values bit all the time. it's just a pretext. They never actually have evidence to that effect, and I recall a case where some people were trying to get livestock banned in town (and succeeded), on the basis that livestock lowered property values. My wife actually went through sales records and determined that in fact the reverse was true, with property values improving in areas that were more permissive to livestockery versus nearby properties in areas where livestockery was more retricted. The difference held in every area she looked.
Perhaps the property value argument is just an attempt to bake in a financial "loss" to increase the lawsuit amount
Indeed. I want to sue my neighbors for cleaning up their property, raising my property values and therefore my taxes.
It's their fault for giving the kid too many vaccines.

Most neighborly shittiness seems to come down to property values.
"The lawsuit?still in effect despite the family's move?says that in previous years the boy has hit a baby with his hand, has spat at neighbors in addition to trying to ride his bicycle into them, and has sat on a neighbor's cat on numerous occasions. "
If this is true I can hardly blame them.

In an honest society all women would admit to being whores.
I don't think honest is a strong human point for any fuckin sex, baby... Honesty is a thing that doesn't run suns and moons- fucking goddamn shit called all the humans always die and will for millions of years because of the goddamn nonexistence of morality of physiks that prefers laws of repetition and circularity that not a single bible, Koran, or fucking feminist religion is found anywher the fuck near.
The woman I have been seeing was married for about 25 years before we met - an arranged marriage (she is Japanese). She had had sex with maybe 5 or 6 men back when she was dating. I assume none of the men she had been with - including her husband - was anything other than 100% selfish. She says that before me she always thought she didn't like sex. She never fooled around on her husband mostly due to her sense of morals - which in Japanese society is all but completely secular.
My point is that there are probably a lot of people who follow their morals simply because they don't see alternatives as either possible or worth the risk.
Other Tejicano: "I'm a stud, bitches! "
Lots of women have sex for fun probably a large majority.
Also women tend to be more monogamous then men if only slightly.

I feel sorry for an old bag like that - having no idea how to navigate the Outrage Machine that runs America now.
Yeah, the Outrage Machine is no doubt out of control. No sympathy from me for Behar though. People like her helped build that steamroller so if anyone is going to get run over by it then could'd happen to a more deserving pos
I know nothing about her... but I do find it interesting that Joan Rivers, another old bag, could say much "worse" things five hundred times a day and the outrage brigade didn't seem to care.
I think that really speaks to the arbitrariness and capriciousness of the whole thing.
That's because Joan Rivers was awesome.

A passage to wisdom from the elders?
But what fucking elders, jabs?
Those who shaped history and created their own realities perhaps? I think he valued a certain certitude over morality and perhaps even intellect. Whether it be Moses preaching fire and brimestone or the Pharaohs entombing their servants with them for the afterlife or the Warrior Kings conquering for the sake of conquering. It didn't matter whether wrong or right or good or evil. They created and imposed their own reality on the world.
Wait, are you moses?
I'm older than Moses:) Yeah, I'm off base. Wrong Nietzsch text. I think what I stated above does reflect a sense of mych of his philosophy, I don't think that is what he is referring to in the last chapter of twilight. He is talking about Hellenism. I think there is an assumption that all western phylosophy flows from Plato. He wants to repudiate this influence on his phylosophy but then where does it originate? He gets into the heart of that the second part of part 4 of the last chapter speaking about Dionysos. Sorry but it's been a while since I broke out my philosophy books and I had to go grab my copy from the study:) Still not sure I'm correct as to your answer but it's getting late. For me:)

48% view Rand unfavorably? If true, the GOP can lose to Chairman Bernie for all I care.
I have to imagine that is because they're voting with their feelz instead of on principles. Rand isn't warm and fuzzy, nor does he stroke the rage boners. In short, being principled and consistent isn't sexy for most people.
Rand is viewed unfavorably because his beliefs fly in the face of all the propaganda of our government and news media. Unlike his father Rand bounces around on his stances making him just another politician. I think Rand would make a better President than most but he like his dad will never get a fair shake by the media.
I think he's referring to the Journolist.
Dammit. This was meant as a reply to something upthread. Please ignore.
(That's what I get for waiting so long to login in between comments)
I watch the debates. I listen to the speeches. At 68 I really no longer see the country I grew up in. Even though I don't agree with all the comments on this site I find most to be well thought out. So please respond to 3 questions for me. 1. Why do we need a federal government. 2. Why do we need a Federal Reserve. 3. Why do I need to care about what happens in the Middle East considering that if I lived anywhere over there I would be imprisoned or beheaded for my beliefs even by our allies. These are very serious questions and I would appreciate thoughtful answers. Thanks
.
1. We need a Federal Government primarily to regulate interstate commerce. By that I mean to keep states from creating protectionist policies. Before we had such an entity the states enacted horrible laws aimed at protecting producers and consumers within their borders. Ex. Each state had tariffs on eggs produced in other states resulting in no eggs crossing state lines. It was a mess. If I remember correctly there were also states that set up tolls for passage into and out of those states. This does not mean regulating interstate commerce in the manner that the FedGov does today. In the vein of "All movements go too far" the FedGov is out of hand.
Defense. Having a centralized entity handle defense is more effective than 50 different entities.
I am not opposed, in theory, of having a central court to check state courts from violating citizen's rights.
Mind you, the only one of these that the FedGov does effectively is defense. Effectively, not efficiently.
2. We don't.
3. The only reason we care about the middle east is oil. as soon as that runs out everyone will pull up stakes and leave them to sink back into the stone age in a forgotten and avoided part of the world.
re #3: You forgot AIPAC and Sheldon Adelson ... and the sort of Christians who love them some Israel because Israelis are God's chosen people.
Normal people should care about ME because these folks really, really want to create chaos among the Arabs and other anti-Zionist Muslims ... of course, subject to keeping the oil flowing and for different reasons ... but chaos nonetheless.
If only not for those damn JOOs we could have peace.
3. That's bullshit. America has tons of oil. If oil were driving America's decisions there wouldn't be any hesitancy about drilling ANWR or anywhere else.
For 3, see John Goldfarb, Please Come Home.
"3. Why do I need to care about what happens in the Middle East considering that if I lived anywhere over there I would be imprisoned or beheaded for my beliefs even by our allies. "
They hate us for our freedoms and will murder people over here for drawing cartoons of Mohammed.
In case you needed any more evidence that Bill Maher and Richard Dawkins are assholes, both think that arresting a kid for building a clock is a-okay.
The fucking kid didn't build or invent jack shit. He took the parts out of a clock and put them in a case.
He is quite clever though because apparently his genius is going to be rewarded by imbeciles who think that it was just a child being creative instead of the son of a political activist raising cash.
Ben Carson, a Seventh Day Adventist, says a Muslim Can't Be President
The president of the United States should not be a Muslim, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson declared during an interview airing Sunday morning. And Islam, a faith professed by some 3 million Americans, is not constitutional, the retired neurosurgeon said.
Asked whether his faith or the faith of a president should matter, Carson said, "It depends on what that faith is."
"If it's inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem," he explained, according to a transcript.
Todd then asked Carson, whose rise in the polls has been powered in large part by Christian conservatives, if he believed that "Islam is consistent with the Constitution."
"No, I don't, I do not," he responded, adding, "I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that."
Carson's fruity religious beliefs include that an alliance between the US and the Vatican will bring about Armageddon.
Who says we don't right now ?
According the shari'a law, he is a Muslim: the children of a Muslim father are Muslim. But he's not under shari'a, there's no substantive evidence that he practices Islam, and he says he's a Christian. Of course, his is the dubious black liberation variety of Christianity of a nutty preacher in Chicago. His inability to recall the rather peculiar teachings of the Reverend Wright suggests that he probably slept during the sermons. Also, he thinks the central message of Christianity is that it make him his brother's keeper. The only such reference to this phrase in Christian scriptures is a scornful utterance by history's first murderer. I can understand why a narcissist would find this attractive since he envisions himself as the keeper and lesser people are just sheep.
I really don't much care whether he's a Muslim, or adherent to some perverse distortion of Christianity, or an agnostic/atheist who has just gone through the motions for political advantage. He's a jerk either way.
"If it's inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem,"
I can't say I disagree but with a different angle. America is the only country in the world based on ideals instead of geography, ethnicity, or language. Ideas, principles and values most certainly do count in a president. We are seeing right now what happens when you put someone in the oval office who doesn't believe in the founding principles.
Having said that, it is entirely within the realm of possibility for anyone of any or no religion or background to subscribe to our principles.
Why does the headline say "can't" and the actual quote say "shouldn't"? I am sure it was an honest mistake.
Did you know that ISIS was on the verge of toppling Western Civilization? That immigration has destroyed us as a country? That the military has been cut down so brutally that the Marines can barely tie their own shoes anymore? These surreal assertions and more were treated as fact by wide swaths of the GOP field.
Our military has been eviscerated. It's a wonder Venezuela hasn't launched as successful invasion of this country.
