The second Republican presidential debates of 2016 will air live on CNN this evening...

This is the most important debate since the previous one!

    1. Rufus J. Firefly   10 years ago

      Hello.

"Microsoft is being sued for gender discrimination."

B-b-but how can this be? Gates and the new guy say all the right things!

      1. Hyperion   10 years ago

Not enough female techies on board. I mean, they hired ALL the female techies who applied, but that's not enough. They'll have to put the cleaning ladies on a software team.

MS HR rep: What's your experience with C#?

Cleaning Lady: Uh, I don't know much about music, but I can cook!

        MS HR rep: You're hired!

        1. DesigNate   10 years ago

C# no here. I clean office now.

Denholm: I'm gonna put you in I.T. because you said on your CV you have a lot of experience with computers.

Jen: I did say that on my CV, yes. I have a lot of experience with the whole computer thing you know, emails, sending emails, receiving emails, deleting emails, I could go on.

          Denholm: Do.

Jen: The web. Using a mouse, mices, using mice. Clicking, double clicking. The computer screen, of course. The keyboard. The... bit that goes on the floor down there.

          Denholm: The hard drive.

          Jen: Correct.

Denholm: Well, you certainly seem to know your stuff. That's settled. I've got a good feeling about you Jen and they need a new manager.

Jen: Fantastic, so the people I'll be working with, what are they like?

          Denholm: Standard nerds!

This is sounding great. The pro-cannabis crowd should immediately come out with their own countervailing board game.

It should include a "Balko reports your story in the Post - get out of jail free" card.

                1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

No, they were for people to panic about a reboot of Coming to America starring Jamie Foxx.

I laughed so hard when I read that. Weird that Corbyn actually being retarded isn't throwing the left into a lather. He's legitimately dumber than Palin, so I'm beginning to think leftist criticism of her didn't actually have anything to do with her being stupid.

          1. Suthenboy   10 years ago

You don't hear the left criticizing Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee do you? Those are arguably some of the dumbest humans on the planet.
Of course the lefty hate for Palin has nothing to do with her IQ.

  5. Warty   10 years ago

    The Guardian is amazing today.

It should not require a perfect victim ? like Ahmed ? for us to finally declare that bigotry against an entire faith community is unacceptable. There are many Ahmed's watching every move of the adults around them. Let us not disappoint them again.

But it also reflects an elemental clash between MPs, many of whom made it to Westminster courtesy of a centralised vetting operation, and a vastly expanded membership who want to take control of their own party. By giving rein to Labour's democracy, the new leadership has the chance to change the balance of power. It will certainly be a rough ride. The media onslaught will continue. But if Corbyn's supporters keep their heads, last Saturday can be the start of more far-reaching change: to break open the political system, put the alternative to austerity centre stage, and bring an end to Britain's support for endless war.

    1. Mrs. Lemuel Struthers   10 years ago

So, Obama but with a working class British accent and bad teeth*?

*He's a Brit so I didn't even check about the bad teeth but what are the odds of nice teeth?

to break open the political system, put the alternative to austerity centre stage, and bring an end to Britain's support for endless war.

      HAHAHAHAHAHAH.

          1. Hyperion   10 years ago

In the UK, you never actually get to see a dentist, but it's free!

            1. Medical Physics Guy   10 years ago

I have to say, I paid a fortune for good dental coverage in NYC and my NHS dentist is just as good for checkups and filling related issues.

I am somewhat lucky in that and would probably take any fancy dental surgery private.

I don't think it's the system here. It's something in the diet. I wonder if putting wheat flour in absolutely everything prevents you from absorbing some key nutrient for your teeth.

              1. Hyperion   10 years ago

    2. Illocust   10 years ago

Except they're claiming racism instead of the much more likely general overreaction of school administrators and the police they call. Notice in the same time period we've had a kid kicked out of school and subjected to drug charges for carrying a maple leaf, and another kid charged with assault for kissing a girl on a dare. Misattributing the cause won't lead to solutions that actually solve the problem.

      1. Warty   10 years ago

      Here's another one today:

Femen's topless condescension towards Muslim women only helps sexism

The latest antics of Femen at a French Muslim conference allegedly discussing wife-beating and proper womanly pursuits are a case in point...What is most troubling about this event is not the outrageously condescending attitude of Femen, nor the reported appalling sexism of the some of the Muslims involved: it is that these two voices are once again propped up as the only two in the conversation. It is as if one can only be either a Muslim who loves misogyny as a religious duty, or an orientalist feminist who hates Islam...Forcing the discourse into such a binary is not only myopic, but factually incorrect. I've researched the way Muslim women fight sexism within the Muslim community, and to the shock of many non-Muslims, my research showed that far from being a recent practice borrowed from the west, Muslim women had been standing up for themselves since the advent of Islam.

Yeah, never mind that these assholes were discussing not whether to beat your wife, but how hard -- it's the feminist protesters that are the problem.

      1. MJGreen - Docile Citizen   10 years ago

        The Fremen are going topless!?

        *rubs eyes* Oh, them.

I don't know, it does seem like if you want to be a feminist, you have to hate Islam. At least, many feminists claim that if you're a Republican, you necessarily hate women and gays.

      2. Lord at War   10 years ago

my research showed that far from being a recent practice borrowed from the west, Muslim women had been standing up for themselves since the advent of Islam.

And those women have been so successful that they are still being murdered because they were raped- 1400 yrs later.

See Jack Welch's system at GE. Wikipedia has a reasonable description in the link below, but essentially employees are ranked as A, B, or C players on a percentage basis.

    4. lap83   10 years ago

Managers have to rank their employees

I've never worked at a company with the policy, but it sounds crappy and prone to bias

        2. CatoTheChipper   10 years ago

Believe it or not, good managers know who the ass-kissers are, and do not reward their behavior. I got my best performance reviews and raises from bosses with whom I argued my own ideas in opposition with theirs. And, yes, I worked for a large company that required every manager to evaluate every subordinate in seriatim. It's actually a pretty easy task.

          Remains to be seen

Trump is shitting up even worse than before

The Republicans don't have a message or a standard bearer. Trump is the only one providing both, at least at the moment, and is part of the reason for his popularity.

I am also praying that hitlery gets caught with too much baggage and her campaign flounders a few months from now.

Big news today was that the USA poverty level remains high, but hey, because of Obamacare, 3% more of America now has health 'insurance' (actually, Medicaid).

It sure was worth quadrupling everyone's deductible, narrowing choices, and greatly raising out-of-pocket costs to get that whopping 3% increase in government coverage.

They could have left everything the same for the rest of America, and just expanded Medicaid and gotten the same 3%, for less overall cost.

But let's make fun of the GOP instead, right shriek?

Can I refer to the situation of Ahmed Muhammad as #Muslimprivilege yet since this type of thing happens to non Muslims all the time but the only time anyone cares enough to make the story go viral is when it happens to Muslims?

Once again, leftists have the situation exactly backwards. If this guy hadn't been Muslim, the exact same thing would have happened but no one would have cared because he wasn't a member of a protected group.

This isn't Ahmed's fault, obviously, and I hope everything turns out well for the actual victim in this case. The left's narrative in this situation has been completely deplorable though.

I'm drinking half of a bottle of this. I have to be in the office tomorrow, so I'll save the other half for another day.

    What are you drinking?

I saw pumpkin beers on tap at the Tilted Kilt. I stuck with Oktoberfest beers and Founder's Porter. I like some pumpkin beers, but Oktoberfest starts this Saturday.

            1. Restoras   10 years ago

I haven't found an Oktoberfest beer that I like. There is something about the taste that I find off-putting.

              1. DEG   10 years ago

I notice Oktoberfest beers tend to have an odd, different taste. I'm not sure what it is. I'm hamstrung a bit in tasting because my sense of smell is so weak. However, whatever it is, that flavor doesn't bother me.

Likes and dislikes are subjective. I don't like grapefruit all that much, and so hate this beer, but I know some folks that like it.

    4. Crusty Juggler   10 years ago

I shall be having a few of these later tonight.

The reviews look interesting. I think Ballast Point is coming or has come into New Hampshire. This thread has some discussion about beer regulation in NH.

It has gotten better. When I first discovered Chimay, I had to go to Massachusetts to get it. That was easy because while I lived in New Hampshire, I worked in Massachusetts. Now Chimay is available in New Hampshire.

        1. Restoras   10 years ago

Ballast Point makes some good beers. Sample and be merry!

      2. Hyperion   10 years ago

Man, I do not see how you guys keep drinking all these damn bitter IPAs. Occasionally one is ok, but I prefer a nice European lager. I'm thinking to go pick up some Grolsch or Czechvar, maybe Kronenborg.

I do like Heffy style wheat beers, though. Some Ayinger with lemon slice sounds good.

        1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

Are you shaking your cane at my beer?

        2. DEG   10 years ago

For me, it depends on what hops they use.

Czechvar is not bad at all.

          Hefeweizen ohne Limone, bitte.

          1. DEG   10 years ago

            oops...

            Zitrone, nicht Limone.

        3. Restoras   10 years ago

I like the bitter IPAs but I also like a good lager, just depends on my mood. I love porters too.

No love for Traquair House? http://www.traquair.co.uk/our-ales
The House Ale is absolutely fantastic.

I didn't mind the one or two from Caledonian that I've tried.

And, shit, I didn't realize it 'til I looked up Scottish breweries on wiki, but BrewDog comes from Scotland. Their offerings may be overpriced, but they're usually top notch.

I really wanted to like Orkney's Skullsplitter a lot more than I did. Maybe a bad bottle(s)?

I'll definitely have to try Loch Ness and St. Andrews's offerings though. Provided they ever make it to TX or LA.

    "This isn't Ahmed's fault, obviously"

Bullshit. His old man is a Muslim political activist. As someone pointed out, he knew exactly what he was doing -- deliberately provoking this response.

    1. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

I'm not willing to make that assumption yet. This isn't an obvious put on like the UVA rape.

      1. Enough About Woodchippers   10 years ago

My understanding is that his old man formally debated that kook minister in Florida who burned Korans.

        1. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

And? This couldn't actually happen to someone with a political father?

          1. Enough About Woodchippers   10 years ago

Whom do you think politicized it? The old man. That's who's giving interviews. As Irish said, this sort of thing happens at schools all of the time.

            1. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

I understand that (and I am Irish). What I'm saying is that even if his old man SUCCESSFULLY POLITICIZED the issue, that still isn't evidence that Ahmed didn't innocently bring a clock to school and have happen exactly what he said happened.

I have no reason to believe Ahmed did this on purpose.

              1. Enough About Woodchippers   10 years ago

I understand what you are saying.

            2. Juice   10 years ago

He wouldn't have to politicize it if his kid wasn't ARRESTED for nothing.

  31. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

So, can we call it an invasion now?

Some migrants threw missiles, including stones and water bottles.
    .....
The Hungarian government says 20 police officers were injured as migrants tried to break through a gate, and a spokesman accused migrants of using children as "human shields".

I like the hunger strikers more

A few metres away, another group began a protest. They sat on the road and threw their bottles of water and loaves of bread into a pile. "We don't want food or water until we cross the border," shouted one man.

An hour later, a crowd right next to the border fence started to move forward. The hunger strikers abandoned their protest to join the bigger crowd - in the hope of finding a way into Hungary.

Maybe they need someone to tell them that 11-foot ladder will solve all their problems? I guess the problem is that Serbia is on the metric system, so they are unable to find one.

    1. Mrs. Lemuel Struthers   10 years ago

I saw the video and it looks pretty damning, but I keep wondering why the Hungarians don't transport them to the northern border or let them pass. The migrants don't want to stay in Hungary. As long as they don't, why do they care? Let them be Austria's/Germany's problem.

      1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

Hungary is obligated by EU rules to keep them, and Austrians, using those rules, are happily deporting them back. Slovakia has already closed its border with Hungary, and Germany on Saturday closed its border with Austria. Hungarians just don't want to deal with that shit.
Now it's Croatia's turn. Gonna be hilarious. Those guys certainly have experience of stampeding refugees into Serbia, after all.

        1. Mrs. Lemuel Struthers   10 years ago

Technically, the country they enter first - usually Greece - is obligated to keep them. The Hungarians could ship them back to Greece. The rules really don't count anymore, so why not push them on to where they actually want to go? It would be cheaper to provide transportation rather than trying to process them and provide shelter and food, not to mention the cost of policing.

          1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

The cheapest way is to not let them in in the first place, so they'll go bother someone else. Incentives matter.
Besides, it's no good pushing them into Austria, if Austria sends them back. As I said, Slovaks closed the border, so can't push them there. Though it would be hilarious to dump them into Romania (if you know Hungarian/Romanian history).

Ooh, best solution - dump the whole lot into Kaliningrad! Let Putin take care of his clients.

            1. Mrs. Lemuel Struthers   10 years ago

              Incentives matter

Yeah, and I'm assuming closing the border is an attempt at discouraging them from passing through Hungary altogether. I'm wondering if 1)that will actually work 2)it wouldn't be more prudent to force Germany into accepting them since they seem to want them and Germany seems to be the country providing the incentives.

It's a clusterfuck all the way around.

              1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

                Merkel wants them.

Germany does not. Hence contrary moves from them. Hungarians just don't want to be the ones stuck with a bunch of people they don't like or want, and making sure they don't enter is the best way.
It will be a good data point "walls work/don't work" dispute. Hungary isn't particularly rich or populous, and the border between Serbia and Hungary is one of the easiest places to cross, being a lovely, verdant plain with reasonably temperate climate.

Argentinians are crazy about the "Maldives." The map of the islands is everywhere in Buenos Aires: from street market stands to the Presidential Palace.

Yup, Obama tried to be super-cool, and smart, and not call them Falklands. Smartest President Ever!

              1. DEG   10 years ago

                He's a fucking idiot.

On the topic of the Falklands War, I stumbled upon this documentary about things that could have happened differently and might have caused an Argentine victory.

                1. Gray Ghost   10 years ago

The SAS suicide plan to hit mainland Argentina and destroy the remaining stock of Exocet really could have gone better: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2592320/ The-secret-disastrous-SAS-attempt- invade-Argentina- revealed-In-Falklands-War- crack-troops- suicidal-mission-storm-Galtieris- Exocet-missile-base- This-story-told-time.html

Neat story. I'd heard of Operation Mikado before, though I thought it was going to involve more than half a troop or so of men, but I'd never heard of Operation Plum Duff before.

Good thing negotiations led to the French deciding not to sell anymore of those missiles to the Argentinians. I wonder what kind of bribe Thatcher had to cough up to A?rospatiale/the French government?

As to other things that could have caused a victory, just waiting for the RN to decommission Invincible would have helped greatly. IIRC, they were scheduled to do it in early 1983. The Argentinian Air Force could have actually practiced doing anti-shipping bomb runs beforehand too, and might have figured out their pesky fuzing issues. I.e., a large portion of their bombs wouldn't detonate when dropped from very low level into shipping.
