Gov. Chris Chrities threatens legal pot users, vows to enforce federal pot laws.
Federalism.
He fears a junk-food shortage.
Yer right. Coupla' stoners get in line ahead of him at Dunkin' Donuts, and, watch out!
Cops hang out at donut shops. Not recommended to stoners.
Call this the Cheetos Tax.
He's actually claiming that he'll enforce them when he becomes president. Which is hilarious. Guess what Christie: when I become president, I won't enforce them!

So, never?

Well, if it was this lizard...
I've seen 1,4,5, and 6, so it's either 2 or 3. I saw the X-files episode of 3 last weekend, so I'm going with that.
2 is the Not, although I based it on a real insect: the ironclad beetle. Its shell is so hard it can survive being run over by a car and entomologists must use drills to mount specimens with pins. It even has a more hardcore cousin called the diabolical ironclad beetle, which sounds like a creature from Magic the Gathering.

Robby is best troll.
Really? Tony telling us how we only support marriage contracting because we hate gays doesn't count?
Wait. That's not why we support them?
Or how about Bo after I said Muslims commit 90% of terrorist attacks globally saying that "white racists have killed more people in the US" as if America is the entire planet? And then when he got called out on the fact that even in the US Islamic terrorists have killed more people in the last 40 years than white racists saying 'Well sure, but 9/11 skews things?'
There are so many trolls. Robby doesn't crack the top 10.
"9/11 skews things"
"Hitler was bad!" "World War II skews things!"
"Cambodia was the worst!" "The Killing Fields were an aberration!"
"Nicole is the worst!" "True dat"

I'll also add that I like Robby, and I think his Trump quote is a very nice troll.

We must protect young children from seeing bare female breasts.
Fuck that. Protect children from seeing fat man boobs.
So babies must be blindfolded while feeding.
#FreeTheNipple!
Ok, so my question to the women who are trying to "free the nipple" is
WHY?
Women's breasts are not the same as men's. (apart from the obvious). Female breasts are not only for feeding infants. They are also sexual organs. Men's chests don't turn women on in the same way as women's breasts do to men.
Should we free the penis and vagina as well?
Are you trying to desexualize women's breasts? Or is it purely that "it's not fair"?
Yes, we should also free the penis and vagina.
So you are trying ruin sex for everyone?!?
Men's chests don't turn women on in the same way as women's breasts do to men.
Applying this logic to hair, ankles, calves, etc gets you into niqab land.
Should we free the penis and vagina as well?
Sure, why not?
Or it just ends in requiring men to be naked all the time. Most of them look way hotter with clothes on.
FWIW, western culture has traditionally sexualized various bits of anatomy. "Free the nipple" in that context is just a bit of agitprop "smash the system" nonsense. I say go for it but don't expect normal people to celebrate you for it.
WHAT! Are you calling me abnormal?
Don't be a hater!
Be careful what you wish for.
I freely admit that I am making an emotional argument. And believe me when I say the last thing I want is to be anything like those fucking shitholes where the niqab and burka are the norm.
But I guess that sometimes the free the nipple argument just sounds like a bunch of lefties shouting 'Not fair, not fair".
Don't get me wrong, I love me the female form. And I am a big fan of all sorts of deviant sexual behavior (consenting adults only, please).
But can't we keep a few things out of the public? The more we see everyone's junk in public, the less hot that becomes in private.
I don't believe anyone's trying to pass a law requiring women to go topless
I am starting a petition right now.
They are also sexual organs.
No, they are not. Sorry. Neither are butts or legs sexual organs, although they certainly excite some people.
Men's chests don't turn women on in the same way as women's breasts do to men.
Women do not respond to visual stimuli in the same way which men do. Not just breasts.
. Indeed.
It was shortly after "Go Topless Day" in Washington a few years back that Lucy left reason.

They hassled the one pretty woman in B.C. for being topless?
Now imagine the outrage if Bill "Papa Bear" O'Reilly made secret visits to the GWB White House.
But hey, Stewart is not a newsman when you criticize his reporting. He's just a comedian.
Jon Stewart's secret White House visits - Obama, aides took unusual steps to cultivate 'Daily Show' comic
Stewart's utterly shameless in demanding that you treat him as a serious commentator, and then when you call him on something he's suddenly just a goofy comedian.
Oh bullshit. Stewart has never claimed to be anything other than a fake news reader.
He didn't have to say it.
Except all those interviews where he talks about how he wants to influence people's politics through his work. And all the times where he tries to present his serious political arguments and if anyone calls him on his idiocy he jumps back into goofy comedian. Hey, Mr. 'Rationalist', this is called actual real world evidence. Some of us don't just construct delusions and defend them to the death.
He had every prog in America clapping their flippers at his every word - I'd say they were taking him seriously, if no one else was.
You think turd is amenable to facts?! Turd?!
And shockingly Buttplug, trying to present serious political arguments, being called on it, and then claiming to be a 'fake news reader' is exactly what I'm talking about. So congratulations, your attempt at disproving it actively supports the argument I'm making.
Care to play again, or are you going to go back to the political kid's table and quiet down?
They both sides when it comes to Jon Stewart, John as you pointed out.
Nice gig, eh?
Reminds me when Tarantino claimed he wanted 'Bojangles Chained Up' or whatever the movie was called to start a national conversation about slavery but when challenged about some facts in the movie (I forget who it was) he said it was 'just a movie'.
Such people are intellectual cowards. They want to enter the intellectual circle but want out as soon as the heat is on.
/cue Glenn Frey.
You're making shit up. I have seen exactly ONE interview where Stewart stops being a comedian and that is with Bill O'Reilly.
Link please?
How about the time his whole serious spiel about Charleston after the shooting? This was literally like a month ago, you idiot.
He gets serious all the time. Like all the time. If you watch his show for more than 2 weeks you'll see him take some subject uber seriously at least once.
'Ladies and gentlemen. I ask. If we don't take that flag down, what have we become?'
Pause.
'JUST JOKING! It's what I do!'
Admittedly the Daily Show is actually better for the 'randomly drops into political lecturing about THE ONE TRUE WAY' problem than John Oliver's show.
How about the time his whole serious spiel about Charleston after the shooting?
Don't confuse melodrama with being serious.
I began watching that show and turned it off since I didn't even want to watch the post 9/11 melodrama-rama and flag waving. I hate all of that shit. I didn't watch the Newtown howling either.
"Don't confuse his actual serious remarks with being serious."
Geez Buttplug, must be great to just disregard anything that doesn't support your argument. That's why you're such a great 'rationalist' right? Because you immediately ignore anything that doesn't support your pre-determined conclusion?
Stewart interviews are not that hard to find.
You're making shit up. I have seen exactly ONE interview where Stewart stops being a comedian and that is with Bill O'Reilly.
Link please?
Trying watching an episode of the Daily Show, idiot? You know, the show where Stewart consistently drops comedy in favour of his political ideology? If Stewart was a 'comedian' he'd go for the funniest remarks. But he doesn't, he goes for the most partisan, pat-on-the-back political social signaling. It's not comedy, it's bad commentary. Just because you're too ignorant to see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Of course, I don't really expect you to understand the nuance of what I'm talking about, seeing as you're the person who throws a hissy fit every time people call Bill Maher a Z-list shitty comedian.
Come on John. It is not like Stewart gives huge non comedic rants and politically slanted about things like the Charleston Shooting or anything.
It is not like Stewart gives huge non comedic rants and politically slanted about things like the Charleston Shooting or anything.
So you were FOR the Charleston shooting?
Or maybe that highlights the fact that, rather than actually be a comedian, Stewart was deliberately throwing out progressive talking point that was called a 'humbling monologue'? That's not attempting to be a political commentator at all? But of course if one were to criticize any of his positions he immediately jumps into 'I'm just a goofy comedian'. It's almost like the actual real world evidence supports us, and not your 'rationalist' delusions?
(Seriously, I love the fact that you declare yourself a 'rationalist' and then burrow into cognitive dissonance to support your beliefs, it's just so wonderful to see the amygdala hijack in full force)
I watch Stewart for the comedy. I don't listen to his political opinion if he offers it up.
In fact many of his jokes pertain to the Prog myth that banks "cheated" people and the executives belong in jail.
I watch Stewart for the comedy. I don't listen to his political opinion if he offers it up.
Ah, so you were wrong when you said Stewart doesn't try to be a political commentator. He does, you just ignore it. Thanks for admitting it.
Considering you love to prop up delusions to support your beliefs, it doesn't surprise me at all that you selectively edit out parts of reality that don't fit your argument.
Now that he's done with the show and they don't need him he's a useful prod. Classy.
well, it is classier than useful idiot.
So Jon Stewart is literally an Obamaite stooge. What a shock.
Just like every other worthless JournoList.
Shouldn't you be out protesting Planned Parenthood?
Somebody's a bit sensitive because people are attacking his role model. I never really thought that Shriek was primarily an Obama fellator. His delivery and near-pathological condescension remind me much more of Jon Stewart. I think Shriek is a Jon Stewart idolater, and thus gets Obama as Stewart's sloppy seconds.
I like Stewart. I liked George Carlin more. I like Doug Stanhope, David Cross, and Steven Colbert.
I like people who attack power and convention with humor. Especially religion and politicians - they deserve it more than anything else.
I like people who attack power and convention with humor. Especially religion and politicians - they deserve it more than anything else.
Except, of course, the politician Buttplug consistently proclaims as the one true god and constructs delusion after delusion to defend?
I really, really love how Buttplug always proclaims himself to be above religion when his behaviour is exactly that of a fundamentalist.
Bullshit again. Show me some good Obama parody. SNL tried. I would LOVE to see it.
I like the Bill Clinton SNL parody.
The problem for your side is that conservative idiots like Dubya are far easier to parody. And people like Bill Clinton are parodied for their personal idiosyncrasies.
Of course you like Bush parodies Buttplug, because you're a pathetic narcissist who likes to trash conservatives for being stupid, evil, etc. you fulfill your own shitty sense of self-esteem. You don't like them due to comedy, you like them because it fuels your pathetic sense of ego. Congratulations Buttplug, your very nuanced view of politics is 'DUR HUR, HE STUPID.'
The problem for your side is that conservative idiots like Dubya are far easier to parody.
'Your side' 'conservative idiots' and again you think pathetic demonization tactics is an actual argument. Of course, you know very little about my political beliefs, but you have to turn me into an 'other' for you to hate. We get it, please stop bringing your insecurities into this.
Again, I love the fact that every time you argue something you end up discrediting yourself. You think your comment is some great shot back but really you're just revealing what a shallow idiot filled with insecurities you are.
Carlin yes. He was a true iconoclast. But these other guys (and I find David Cross hilarious) aren't exactly speaking truth to power.

"Somebody's a bit sensitive because people are attacking his role model."
Nah.
It's because turd is a lefty ignoramus.
I don't think those things are mutually exclusive. I think the smug condescension comes from a worship of the smug and condescending Stewart. I think the programmed leftism comes from a combination of his perceived self-deification (see the above smug condescension) combined with a general lack of exercise of his cerebral cortex.

Planned Parenthood warns news media - don't air undercover sting videos
She is right though. The videos should not be used as an excuse to defund planned parenthood. The fact that government shouldn't be involved in funding them in the first place (no, I'm not talking about anything having to do with abortion) should be used as an excuse to defund them.

PP's problem is getting federal funds. The outrage, real or manufactured, is far less without those dollars in the till.
Really, PP? Odds that anyone outside Fox was gonna air them in the first place were what? And can I get you to bet on them?

2) obfuscate and use slippery and imprecise language;
3) Stonewall as much as possible and drip-feed information when stonewalling fails
4) After a couple weeks of #3, declare the matter "old news" and bemoan that we are still talking about it.

Why the Left Hates America
In the meantime, America gradually became the least-xenophobic, least-racist nation in the world.
That just can't be so. Why, we are regularly reminded by TNC how very, very racist America is despite interracial marriages being unremarkable and the election of a (sorta) black president.
Yeah, but remember that one time that a single, socially awkward, mentally unhinged racist asshole killed a bunch of people and everyone in the country was appalled?
That's because ALL WHITES IN AMERICA are teh RACEIST and evidence of our deeply rooted structural bigotry! You, personally, are responsible!!!!
Tonio, I've hung out with Europeans in corporate event settings, and you should see their casual racism. They can't stand each other, and used to make racist comments about each other behind their backs. It always makes me wonder what they're saying about my national origin when I'm not around. And these are the people the left holds up as "enlightened" while Americans are rubes.
There's a great comic series by Warren Ellis called 'the Ministry of Space' that was about an alternate history where the Brits got all the German rocket scientists and dominated the space program. There's a great bit at the end, which takes place in the 2000s, where a black pilot the series has been on-again-off-again following around goes to the bathroom. And it's the 'Coloureds Only' bathroom. Basically it implies that anything similar to the civil rights/anti-racism movement would have never happened if America wasn't a dominant world power.
Warren Ellis has put out a lot of shit and writes the same character in basically all of his work, but when he's on top of his game, he's one of the best writers in the business.
Warren Ellis has put out a lot of shit and writes the same character in basically all of his work, but when he's on top of his game, he's one of the best writers in the business.
Pretty much. And that character is 'half mad social critic with lots of issues'.
"Basically it implies that anything similar to the civil rights/anti-racism movement would have never happened if America wasn't a dominant world power."
Yet the Civil Rights Act was largely just an act of political theatre because much of the world (particularly the USSR) openly mocked the blatant racial discrimination in the US.
You can't possibly be saying the US was bad, because the USSR said so????
WTF? There isn't a single country in the world with as racially heterogeneous society as ours. No one is saying it is perfect, and we have had some splotches on our record.
But compare it anyone else?? Who exactly has done a better job?
You can't possibly be saying the US was bad, because the USSR said so????
You're right, I'm not.
The USSR was able to influence Washington by highlighting the legal segregation in the US. Whether they understood nuance or were just lying is irrelevant, just that they could embarrass the US at the world stage was enough to influence politicians.
"WTF? There isn't a single country in the world with as racially heterogeneous society as ours. No one is saying it is perfect, and we have had some splotches on our record."
Well that's not true, there are many nations far more diverse than the US. The US just seems to have a special obsession with it because it's an excellent political tool here.
"But compare it anyone else?? Who exactly has done a better job?"
Canada.
Canada
BAHAHAHAHAHA...
I'd really like to introduce you to some of my Metis friends, and then we can have a conversation about Canada's wonderful race relations and our institutions, some of which were actually used to justify South African apartheid in the Commonwealth. Thanks, Indian Act!
Canada's history of excellent race relations here.
John, are you saying Canada's history of race relations is worse than that of the US or just bad?
As no one is arguing against the latter.
They don't care about intra-white racism. To them, it's all a joke, even though it's gotten many people killed in Europe and been the underlying cause of many European wars. Of course, Europeans aren't just racist against other Europoeans, they're just smart enough to keep it quiet when Americans are listening.
"Yes, slavery was the reason for the Civil War: Every southern state that seceded from the United States announced that northern opposition to slavery and to its spread to new states was the primary reason for secession."
Stop there, one can't seriously conflate War and Secession.
Or just understand that both sides had different reasons for fighting the war. The south left because it thought that if it didn't, it was inevitable that there would be eventually enough free states to ban slavery. So the south left over slavery.
The North in contrast did not fight the war to end slavery. It fought it to preserve the union.
"The North in contrast did not fight the war to end slavery. It fought it to preserve the union."
Bingo, and that's the war. The cause was nationalism.
No. The cause was the South leaving the union because they were afraid they would lose slavery. Moreover, even if the South had a right to leave, it didn't have a right to take their slaves with them against their will.
If California left the union tomorrow but refused to let anyone who wanted to leave, the US would have a right to stop them on that basis alone.
"No. The cause was the South leaving the union because they were afraid they would lose slavery. "
That's the cause of secession. Again secession doesn't imply war in any way.
I tried to leave my wife and she stabbed me. I didn't cause the stabbing.
"Moreover, even if the South had a right to leave, it didn't have a right to take their slaves with them against their will."
I'm not going to argue religion with you, it doesn't matter though as the war that actually happened still isn't justified by that argument.
You could read Spooner here, essentially: while they didn't have a right to slaves, Washington still doesn't have a right to states.
Further still, the Confederacy (the leaders, that is) offered to abandon slavery in recognition of their independence.
"If California left the union tomorrow but refused to let anyone who wanted to leave, the US would have a right to stop them on that basis alone."
The analogy in inapt, as the US was also a slave Nation when they invaded the Confederacy.
In your hypothetical the US (or any other nation, for that matter) would have, at best, the (moral) right to intervene to assure the people who wanted to leave could leave.
secession doesn't imply war in any way.
That's retarded. The Southern states had no right to implement a criminal regime. They struck first. Comparing secession to divorce is double-retarded.
"That's retarded. The Southern states had no right to implement a criminal regime."
Slavery was legal. They had every right.
"They struck first. Comparing secession to divorce is double-retarded."
Who did they strike?
Does striking first therefore mean you no longer can file for divorce?
You're going to have to do more than call things retarded if you want me to take you seriously. That might be a big "if", of course.
Further still, does the people or government of South Carolina striking first mean that secession is also off of the table for, say, Virginia?
Slavery was legal. They had every right.
Wow. WOW. That's not how 'rights' work.
Who did they strike?
The slaves and other citizens oppressed by The Confederacy, and Fort Sumter.
You are a pro at asking stupid questions.
"Wow. WOW. That's not how 'rights' work."
Yes. That's the only way they work, as legal fictions. Anything else is highfalutin God-Talk.
"The slaves and other citizens oppressed by The Confederacy, and Fort Sumter."
The Government Fort? Sponsored by a State through oppressive taxation?
(Of course, it was abandoned prior to the Secession and there were no casualties of the bombardment)
The slaves who were slaves under the prior regime?
The citizens who were oppressed by the prior regime?
If libertarian morality means a thing, the people of South Carolina were well within their right to bombard any and every government outpost they saw fit. (Same for the slaves with regards to their masters)
"You are a pro at asking stupid questions."
Brilliant as always Cytoxic, my friend. Never change.
IMHO, slavery was unconstitutional even before the 13th Amendment. Weren't slaves being deprived if their liberty without due process of law?
Of. Of their liberty.
So, more than 2 yrs into the war, a country where slavery was legal attacked another (newly declared) country where slavery was legal- but the war was about "slavery"?
Further, the the attacking country didn't make slavery illegal in it's own country until more than 2 years after "Proclamating" it illegal in the foreign country...
"IMHO, slavery was unconstitutional even before the 13th Amendment. Weren't slaves being deprived of their liberty without due process of law?"
You're opinion simply isn't shared by many. Spooner did a hell of a job trying to push it but the Enumeration Clause and the The Fugitive Slave Claus made it clear in most people's minds that some persons weren't equal to other.
However, even if we accept the view that it was unconstitutional, that still doesn't justify invasion, occupation, and annexation (as Spooner also argued!) as the Confederacy was a separate country, like Cuba or Brazil.
"When I pressed him on his charge of America's "annihilating American Indians," he said that America had actually killed 10 percent of the Indians. But as awful as that statistic is, one-tenth is a far cry from "annihilating."
Uh, technically its "decimating".
I think the author really could have done better with that piece. Meaning, i'm not sure he ever gets to any interesting point as to the "why" part of the question.
Instead he cites Zinn as the emblematic retard of the left (*when his time has actually passed and been replaced with a different version of America-hating)... and simply cites his own one-dimensional view of America's historical global-beneficence (which is definitely more muddy than he grants)
He misses like a million issues that relate more to the more-contemporary "fin de si?cle" outlook that dominates among lefties... where America is deplorable partly *because* of our prosperity, as well as a kind of 'populist elitism' (*yes, contradiction in terms) where cynically sneering, "ugh...'Murica!" happens 10000 times a day on the internet. Where Buzzfeed does "Here are Europeans being grossed out by American Snack Foods!"-videos...intended to reinforce young *Americans* view of themselves as something to be mocked.
he also fails to note the mass-psychosis about "inequality" the left is obsessed with. Or their belief that the US is "the most racist" place on earth.
"I actually think I'm a pretty good president," he said. "I think if I ran, I could win. I can't."
Most transparently arrogant Prez evah!
The 22nd Amendment was created by time traveling-racists to ensure that Obama could not earn a third term.
If Obama doesn't run and a Republican is elected president, the ACA might be in jeopardy. Therefore, under the Supreme Court rule that the ACA must be saved at all costs, Obama can run in 2016. Chief Justice Roberts will explain that it's not a third term, but a second second term, which is okay.
Reporting for duty.
I mean, completely factoring out politics, Obama just comes off as the worse President, personality-wise. The blatant narcissism is just stunning. Bush was an utter shitlord but you could probably have some kind of friendly conversation over beers with him. Obama just seems like the type who would try to dominate a conversation and make it all about him.
I knew a guy years ago who met and spent time around Bush.
He's a flaming liberal but loved the 'congenial, funny and witty' Bush as he put it.
Yeah, I found most of Bush's policies utterly detestable, but everything I've heard from people that have met him, liberal or conservative, is that he's a stand-up guy, smart, engaging, and totally classy.
Funny, he was NEVER that way on camera.
And The Plug knows every second of footage ever made of BOOOOOSH. Yes sirree.
Every second of the footage shown on Jon Stewart's show. For sure.
But Barry is flawless in front of a teleprompter, ergo he is teh smartestest president in HISTORY!!!!11!!11!!!
Barry can name 7 more states than I can.
Even when he went turkey bowling?
Some people are better in front of crowds, while others are better one-on-one. Is this not basic common sense?
I dunno, I get the impression that Barry is just as pedantic and condescendingly smug one-on-one as he is behind a podium.
For PB's enjoyment:

I dunno...when he was sending those secret messages to you, he certainly seems smart and engaging.
I probably couldn't, no.
Clinton thought the same thing, and FDR was actually able to do it. This seems to be a common delusion in Democrat presidents.

Obviously this Brooks guy is a raging anti-Semite.

Seriously, no Gentile would do this play, nor should they. Or at least he would make the producers Armenian or something.
Well, I see he has a firm grip on the "liberty" part...
There's at least one Jew, who fought in WWII, who disagrees.
You cunt.
Thanks for that, MJ. I didn't know.

Even more respect for him.
Supposedly he said something along the lines of "Two things I hate most in life are combat and engineering, so of course that's where the army put me."
Without even looking I'm going to say this has be about Blazing Saddles, one of the funniest movies ever made.
Makes me want to whip something out on an SJW
Yes. Also vulgar and irreverent and completely undisciplined but somehow gels into a cohesive film.
And one of the best works ever about tolerance, and effective because it was cheap laughs and not shrill hectoring.
That was what I assumed, too. I have a friend who is about a hair's breadth from being a Black Panther, and he loves Blazing Saddles mockery of racism.

I think this is a perfect reason why "science" will never solve the climate debate.
The people who are skeptical look at this and see everything they expected: a smoking gun of fraud. The people who aren't skeptical listen to the AGW cheerleaders who offer up a bunch of science gobbledygook to explain why this isn't the droid you are looking for.
To an extent, I understand objections to this data. You have to expect that the data will be "corrected" over time. The stations are changing each year, and there is no way to generate a continuous dataset without some manner of correction.
Indeed, if you think about it, IF there really is a warming trend that is being "hidden" by deterministic instrument problems, you would expect to find exactly this trend line. And there are real cases where an un-biased algorithm could do this. For example, if you did some sort of geographical analysis where you kicked out temps that were extreme, you could see 3 stations with temp sets, two showing warming, but one suddenly stepping down. In that case, you would expect to see a warming trend after the fact.
I believe in the past there was a study where they fed random data into the correction process and it developed a warming trend. THAT is a smoking gun.

It would take a *lot* to turn normal Americans against the Jews.
Your average oe Six-Pack is far more likely to be a philo- than an anti-semite. For every redneck nazi you have a whole bunch of good old boys who love their Old Testament and their TV shows with Jewish characters, etc.

I don't think it's normal Americans we have to worry about, it's the social justiciars, especially in light of their pact with the islamist ribbentrops out there.
Viewing your countrymen as your "hosts" doesn't help.
Yeah, heck with that, you're fellow-Americans, not "guests." So grow a giant pair of America-style balls and give the anti-Semites a good old American wedgie.
P.J. O'Rourke had a fairly decent observation. In America, poor people are racists, rich people are anti-semites.

This is stupid.
I'm willing to go out on a limb here and say that socialism did a lot of damage to India after colonialism. And the Indian government is to blame for inflicting that damage to India.
There is no point in getting mad, and the best way to get even with Britain was to beat Britain in economic growth and socialism screwed that up.
India's prime minister endorses call for Britain to pay reparations for colonial rule
His argument is also moronic because he says that when Britain arrived (in the 1600s) India had 20% of the planet's GDP and by the time they left it had fallen to like 1%.
Which conveniently ignores that the industrial revolution happened in between those years. There's no reason to believe India wouldn't have fallen just as far behind if Britain had never arrived simply by virtue of not having the same sort of industrial revolution that happened in Western Europe.
So, to calculate reparations, you would have to figure out how much better off India would be today without colonialism in the past. No doubt British rule caused a lot of damage. But, since the Mughal Dynasty collapsed through its own stupidity (mostly), one wonders how long the region would have been in a state of anarchy (the bad kind).
I don't even accept the proposition that British rule caused a lot of damage.
First of all, of all the colonial powers, Britain was by far the most benevolent.
For right or wrong, British policy was "Make the world England". And in general that meant education, common law, etc.
And I know it is in vogue now to say the British used the caste system and made it worse. But frankly that is bullshit, and there is damn near no evidence to show that. In addition, while Britain had (and still struggles with ) the class system (obviously because of government, not in spite of it) it really doesn't jibe even with their view of class such as Noblesse Oblige.
Please understand that I am not arguing for some paternalistic world view. But, this whole reparations thing is just plain stupid.
Agree with your comments. But there were several episodes in the 19th century where Britain refused to release grain, collected as taxes, during times of famine in India. They wanted to ship it back to Britain to keep prices down at home. Paul Johnson (British conservative historian and general supporter of the British empire) discusses this in one of his books. Birth of the Modern I think.
Poverty Is A Medical Condition

'Impossible' rocket drive works and could get to Moon in four hours

OK, all we have to do is convince them to exile all the looters, wreckers, hoarders and kulaks to the moon.

Why would we put ourselves in gravity wells again? Let's take over the asteroid belt instead.
SPACE LIBERTARIANS FTW!
Is this another "cold fusion" deal, or is this rocket working on a larger-than-subatomic scale?
I don't think so. Here is a better article on it.
http://www.sciencealert.com/in.....ces-thrust
The real excitement began when those Eagleworks researchers admitted back in March that, despite more than a year of trying to poke holes in the EM Drive, it just kept on working - even inside a vacuum. This debunked some of their most common theories about what might be causing the anomaly.
Now Martin Tajmar, a professor and chair for Space Systems at Dresden University of Technology in Germany, has played around with his own EM Drive, and has once again shown that it produces thrust - albeit for reasons he can't explain.
Tajmar presented his results at the 2015 American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics' Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition in Florida on 27 July, and you can read his paper here. He has a long history of experimentally testing (and debunking) breakthrough propulsion systems, so his results are a pretty big deal for those looking for outside verification of the EM Drive.
It seems like someone who had a confirmation bias against this system couldn't debunk it.
Interesting. The "debunker's" paper says that they got 20uN from a 700W microwave oven magnetron, and that he didn't particularly try to tune the chamber. For a contrast, some microwave transmitters can transmit at over 10k times the power (10MW), so if it were a linear progression, a 10MW power source could generate 0.2N of force.
It's still orders of magnitude away from Saturn V force, but it's approaching ion thruster territory.
Thanks for the summary, Trashy. This is hopeful, if only for probes.

Time to get rid of the term robot:
In an article in the Czech journal Lidov? noviny in 1933, he explained that he had originally wanted to call the creatures labo?i ("workers", from Latin labor). However, he did not like the word, and sought advice from his brother Josef, who suggested "roboti". The word robota means literally "corv?e", "serf labor", and figuratively "drudgery" or "hard work" in Czech and also (more general) "work", "labor" in many Slavic languages (e.g.: Bulgarian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Polish, Macedonian, Ukrainian, archaic Czech, as well as robot in Hungarian). Traditionally the robota (Hungarian robot) was the work period a serf (corv?e) had to give for his lord, typically 6 months of the year. The origin of the word is the Old Church Slavonic (Old Bulgarian) rabota "servitude" ("work" in contemporary Bulgarian and Russian), which in turn comes from the Proto-Indo-European root *orbh-. Robot is cognate with the German root Arbeit (work)

Moon Base Would Be Cheap with Help from Private Industry: Report
No word about how to build a giant catapult.

Which is to say:
+1 "[Cheyenne Mountain is] not there any longer."
I think step 1 of industrialized space is somebody building an orbital construction depot. The biggest hindrance to large scale development is that everything must be designed for the first 200 miles to orbit. Once we have some capability for moderately complex assembly in orbit (as practiced in building the ISS), craft can be built to handle the rigors of space without compromising due to the rigors of launch.
Space assembly is half the problem. The other half is lifting raw materials out into orbit is super expensive.
Moon base kind of works, if you're willing to rebuild an industrial base there.
Space elevator may also work, but you actually have to build one, which is probably even harder.
As the article suggests, it all depends on what we find out there. If there's enough good materials (like hydrogen) on the moon, then it pays to start thinking about building spacecraft either on the moon or in orbit.

?sarc?
because i thought beanses *was* the defining feature of chili
(and the ground-beef sauce they call chili on things like 7-11 chili-dogs was the crime-against-humanity)
I am shocked, shocked, and dismayed
"Beans, a staple of Tex-Mex cuisine, have been associated with chili as far back as the early 20th century.[9] The question of whether beans "belong" in chili has been a matter of contention among chili cooks for a long time. While it is generally accepted that the earliest chilis did not include beans, proponents of their inclusion contend that chili with beans has a long enough history so as to not be considered "inauthentic."[10] The Chili Appreciation Society International specified in 1999 that, among other things, cooks are forbidden to include beans in the preparation of chili for official competition?nor are they allowed to marinate any meats.[11]"
The *international* chili society? *narrows gaze*
I thought this was America.
This makes for an entertaining, Texas v. New York Chili showdown
"Tolbert and Fowler challenged Smith to a ghost-town cook-off. The bean question would be settled in Terlingua, a former mining outpost near the Mexican border, on Oct. 21, 1967. In what came to be known as the Great Chili Confrontation, Fowler represented Texas; Smith spoke for New York and the rest of the wide world. Three judges would decide the outcome: Terlingua Mayor David Witts; San Antonio brewmaster Floyd Schneider; and Hallie Stillwell, a judge from Alpine, Texas?who happened to be Smith's cousin.
...
The swing vote, Witts, took one bite of Smith's New York bean "chili" and declared himself poisoned. His taste buds were ruined, he sputtered, according to accounts of those who were present. Witts was unable to try the other chili in good faith. No winner was declared.
...
[as a result of this inconclusive event...] beans are a feature of nearly every so-called chili served outside Texas. I say so-called because even though beans are unlikely to permanently damage your taste buds, they are anathema to chili. Put plainly, beans do not belong in chili. And non-Texans'?especially New Yorkers'?repeated attempts to add beans to this regional specialty only reveal their own arrogance and ignorance."
I'm a New Yorker and I would never put beans in chili. Beans are disgusting.
"Beans are disgusting"

Publishing State Laws is Terrorism
I'm sick of the "enforce the laws as written" argument. No, you shouldn't enforce laws as written if they'll lead to unjust results. If the legislature is too dysfunctional to repeal unjust laws, then the executive shouldn't enforce them.
Here, a majority of the country is pro legalized marijuana, Congress is beginning to realize that maybe the Drug War is a bad idea, many states have at least legalized MMJ, etc. With this backdrop, it's simply unjust to enforce federal marijuana laws in states that have decided to legalize.
You Know Who Else said that the legislature was too dysfunctional so he can ignore laws?
The problem is that just leads to a bunch of laws that aren't enforced until the government wants to bust you for something, and they can bust you for some BS like felonious mopery. If a law is garbage then the quickest way to get it repealed is to enforce it. Having a bunch of rarely enforced laws the cops can pull out of their ass whenever they feel like it isn't exactly an ideal situation.
I'd go so far as to say that courts should demand that the executive should justify any situation where it doesn't choose to enforce a law to a judge, and that the legislature must make available the funds necessary to universally enforce any law that is passed, or lose the law.
That could be hard to prove since some crimes might not pop up that often, so the cops could simply defend non-enforcement by claiming that they haven't found anyone committing a particular crime. Probably a better solution is to have built in sunset in provisions on all laws, if the legislature doesn't think a law is worth renewing after five or six years, then whatever they outlawed probably wasn't that big of a deal to begin with.
