Some people donate extra taxes to help the government; the Clintons donate storage space.

Some people? It think it was MA that had an option to voluntarily pay in the higher bracket. Guess how many people did.

It is also half as many as the year before. This goddamned austerity will be the death of all of us!

          2. OneOut   10 years ago

But many Dimocrats say that people want to pay higher taxes.

Are there no Dimocrats in MA ?

Jesus, how far are we from a Reichstag fire moment? Is this it?

Time to outlaw talk radio, the Tea Party and the Republicans.

Time to ban all monuments to Lafayette too. He helped slave-owners commit treason and killed an unarmed crowd on the Champ de Mars.

Despite my snark at that time the video positively adjusted my attitude by a factor of three (c.f., The Grinch).

Don't forget that it's "common sense" gun safety laws he wants. That's all, just a "reasonable" gun law. Just like all the other "reasonable" gun laws that need just a little bit more restrictiveness to them to be even more reasonable. It's always just a little bit more. If any of the gun-grabbers could ever tell me what they personally would find unreasonable in a gun law I might for one second believe they don't have the ultimate goal of total civilian disarmament.

      1. chipper me timbers   10 years ago

Roosh V, pickup artist, shouldn't be allowed in Canada, says petition

Valizadeh is an American author, blogger and speaker who "advises" men on the best methods to convince a woman to have sex with them.

Concordia student Fannie Gadouas is encouraging people to sign the petition to stop his entry into Canada. She said people should know that he is coming to the city and work to prevent it.

"The SJW's [social justice warriors] are now agitating to get me banned from the country. My plan is to sell a copy of the lecture after the tour for about $10, but if the SJW mob successfully gets any of my Canada stops cancelled, I will give away copies of the lecture for free at the peak of the media coverage. Thousands of extra people will see ideas they are trying to censor. No matter what happens, they will lose and we will win. There is nothing they can do to stop us."

The principal at my high school had a vice-principal (who was also the geography teacher) and a single secretary that ran the school office. That was it. 3 people ran an entire high school. Where my nephew goes to high school? They have a vice-principal for each grade level and an executive vice-principal and at least 5 secretaries of one sort or another. God knows how many Diversity Officers and Deputy Executive Assistant Outreach Coordinators and Supreme Grand High Exalted Making Sure The Pencils are Sharp But Not Too Sharp Because Think Of The Children's they have. 8. Winston   10 years ago

Thank goodness we are far more tolerant today...

On 30 January 1661, (the 12th anniversary of the execution of Charles I), Cromwell's body was exhumed from Westminster Abbey, and was subjected to the ritual of a posthumous execution, as were the remains of Robert Blake, John Bradshaw and Henry Ireton. (The body of Cromwell's daughter was allowed to remain buried in the Abbey.) His disinterred body was hanged in chains at Tyburn, and then thrown into a pit. Cromwell's severed head was displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall until 1685.

    1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

I wonder how the head looked after 24 years on the pole.

    2. John   10 years ago

The abbey was originally site of the tombs of King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their son Richard I of England (The Lionheart), their daughter Jeanne of England, their grandson Raymond VII of Toulouse, and Isabella of Angoul?me, wife of their son King John. However, there is no remaining corporal presence of Henry, Eleanor, Richard or the others on the site. Their remains were destroyed during the French Revolution.

Francesco ("the Frenchman")[1] was the name given to Saint Francis of Assisi (baptized Giovanni) by his francophile father, celebrating his trade with French merchants. Due to the renown of the saint, this Italian name became widespread in Western Europe during the Middle Ages in different versions (Francisco, Fran?ois, etc.). However, it was not regularly used in Britain until the 16th century as Francis.[

Alternately, because you seem of above ordinary intelligence to me and since one of the implications in the article is that writing of one's experiences (even if the resultant works are not published) is therapeutic - and indeed "healing" - perhaps you might consider doing a bit of writing of your own.

            I will.

My sense is that I will have to read this in sections, parts at a time.

What is coincidental is that at the end of the post you responded to, I had started to ask you if I could obtain some of the home brew I saw via a link you provided a while ago, but I deleted the question.
I see that the gaming link where I saw the home brew is in the content of miserable donuts. Which, in a sort of stream-of-consciousness manner reminds me that I thought about sending you my "The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus 16 Ton Mega Set" when I was admiring the names of some of the home brews.
If you're interested in making an exchange I would be pleased to work out the details. I have no idea what the laws regarding the shipping of alcohol are, and that might be a bit of a hurdle.

Unfortunately, the necessities of life call upon me and I must needs depart H&R for a couple of days. Perhaps we can discuss this on another thread next week.

Like I always say: I try being as cynical as I can but some days you just can't keep up.
          .
News reporter: "Mrs. Clinton denies any wrongdoing."
Film clip of Hillary: "I have never e-mailed any classified material on my server. There is no classified material on my server."
Me throwing beer bottle at the TV: "Of course there is no classified material on your server - because you deleted it, the question is 'WAS there classified material on your server?' and how the hell would you e-mail something that wasn't already on your computer? The question isn't whether or not you were sending classified material, it's whether or not you were RECEIVING it."
And knowing Clintons and how you gotta parse every goddamn word out of their lying mouths, her words are all it takes for me to be convinced she just said that yes indeed she did regularly receive and store classified material on her server.

How about an ad starring the child rapist she defended by smearing the victim? The woman is still alive, she very much resents the experience, and there's audiotape of Hillary laughing about the experience.

          1. C. Anacreon   10 years ago

C'mon, you know what would happen next. CNN and NPR would both do huge shows decrying the 'exploitation of the suffering rape victim' by the 'evil white male Republicans solely for political gain'. Hillary would end up being described as a victim herself in all this, and as a victim herself she's really the only one who can understand the tragedy, and meanwhile all of her lickspittle would get the 'war on women' meme rolling again, all before the ad even had a chance to air a second time.

Oh, I wouldn't say nothing will come of it. I imagine something unpleasant is going to happen to those Inspectors General.

  19. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

    Ah, yes, inaccuracies in reporting:

The paper initially reported that two inspectors general have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation "into whether Hillary Rodham Clinton mishandled sensitive government information on a private email account she used as secretary of state."

That clause, which cast Clinton as the target of the potential criminal probe, was later changed: the inspectors general now were asking for an inquiry "into whether sensitive government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account Hillary Rodham Clinton used as secretary of state."

The Times also changed the headline of the story, from "Criminal Inquiry Sought in Hillary Clinton's Use of Email" to "Criminal Inquiry Is Sought in Clinton Email Account," reflecting a similar recasting of Clinton's possible role. The article's URL was also changed to reflect the new headline.

As of early Friday morning, the Times article contained no update, notification, clarification or correction regarding the changes made to the article.

One of the reporters of the story, Michael Schmidt, explained early Friday that the Clinton campaign had complained about the story to the Times.

    1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

All the changed was whether "Hillary mishandled information" to 'magic passive-voice' ...whether "Information was mishandled while it was on her account"

"Not saying SHE did it! It was just there, and mishandling happened!"

That's their cop out? Basically, the correction is a non-correction. Whether she's named as the target, or whether its simply "her account" that's the target, its the same fucking story.

  20. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

From a while back, but I missed it: Sleazy attorney responsible for tons of terrible campus sex policies published an article arguing that 30 Shades of Gray is evil because BDSM is torture and should be illegal because you can't consent to being tortured.

Every paragraph is amazing. Its idiocy density is immense:

"I initially planned to write about why only stupid people are titillated by violence, and that films that eroticize violence are harmful to society, etc. But that seemed too obvious.

Then I tried writing that such films are women's "blackface" because they're akin to Minstrel shows that once celebrated black people as simpletons who enjoyed being mistreated. But that seemed inadequate."

    Okay.

"Some women say they enjoy being harmed, and even call it "liberating," which may well be true, but so what. Some people also like overdosing on heroin, but we have policies and laws in place to prevent such "pleasure." In any event, the idea that submitting to violence is a form of freedom is as distracting and offensive as the claim that some black slaves in the South liked working on plantations for no pay. We forbade slaves to "choose" to submit to dehumanizing degradation, and we never once called such submission "liberating.""

        Best part:

"Private sexual behavior between consenting adults is rarely the government's business, but when it constitutes criminal activity to which adults cannot lawfully consent, the fact that it happens behind closed doors is irrelevant."

I like it because it's such a bizarre argument. What happens behind closed doors isn't the government's business unless the government decides to outlaw it, at which time it totally becomes the government's business!

So if governments just said 'all homosex is now illegal' that would be completely justifiable because the government said so.

Not one bit surprised. There's already feminists claiming coitus is always rape because it's inherently violent and therefore no one can consent to it.

    1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

That's exactly what I thought. It's like you're in my head.

    2. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

Some people might see a stat like that and say 'Louisiana gun deaths are highly skewed by the fact that New Orleans is the most violent city in the country and this can't be blamed on mean old right-wingers since New Orleans hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1870. Most of the state actually has a relatively average homicide rate when compared to the rest of the country and you're using an outlier to wrongfully claim the entire state is dangerous.'

Other people might say "New Hampshire and Vermont both have very high gun ownership rates and are among the safest states in the country."

Unfortunately, actual facts like that don't fit into 140 characters.

      1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

Don't get all off-topic with your ownership and safety nonsense. Some people just want to shop.

      2. Terc   10 years ago

What my ideological opponents typically counter with is something like, "But people buy the guns in Louisiana and sell them to criminals in New Orleans. That's why we have to clamp down on private gun sales." When I mention NH or VT (or Switzerland. They love Europe!), they put their fingers in their ears and shout, "Blah blah blah! I can't hear you!"

  31. Trshmnstr doesn't recycle   10 years ago

Speaking of woodchippers, I need one. Does anybody have any recommendations? It needs to be able to take larger branches (I have old trees, and need to chip everything that is too small to be firewood, 3-4" diameter or less), and it needs to be durable enough to take a bit of a beating.

This is what I'm currently looking at, but I'm open to other suggestions, including places to get used models.

    1. Lee G   10 years ago

I wouldn't go any smaller than a 6 inch disc chipper, horizontal feed. Just because bigger is safer.

I own a 12 inch Bandit and use the hell out of it.

      1. Trshmnstr doesn't recycle   10 years ago

I have experience on a 6" PTO-driven chipper, so that's what I'm comfortable with, but I don't have a tractor and am struggling to invest so much for what is just a 1ac lot with some really big trees. I'm sitting in that sweet spot beyond what I can burn in a couple hours (without scorching half the yard), but where I don't generate enough material to warrant a huge investment.

I think the solution is to move to 15 acres and get the 12" chipper!

        1. Lee G   10 years ago

Rent what you need. You don't want to own one. It's not worth the money.

          1. Lee G   10 years ago

I say that because that's what I do for a living, own equipment and rent it out. It takes a lot of usage to justify owning one.

So CNN called Kenya a 'terrorist hotspot' and a bunch of Kenyans angrily freaked out on Twitter and claimed this was racist.

Except hundreds of people are killed by terrorists in Kenya every year since about 2011, so it is a terrorist hotspot.

    Why are people so dumb?

To be fair, they are a terrorist hotspot because they let in a bunch of Somalis in, and turns out that may be a bad idea. Not like it's Kenyan natives shooting up the malls.

      1. Irish ?s ESB   10 years ago

Well, they also didn't 'let a bunch of Somalis in,' they completely lack the money that would be necessary to keep them out.

It's not hard to sneak across a border in Africa. And a lot of the attacks by Al Shabaab occur right on the Somalian border. They've actually attacked tons of quarries because the quarries are right on the border so it's easy to go there and murder 20 workers or so.

        1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

True, but bunch were allowed in as refugees. And the thanks was..oh wait, you can't collectivize, even if you get gunned down because you are wearing the cross or can't recite the shahadah in Arabic.

I'm just saying, I can understand why they might be a taaaad salty about CNN morons.

      2. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

At the risk of sounding pedantic, of the four shooters, one was a Kenyan of Arab ethnicity. The other was Sudanese, the ringleader was Somali, and the other "unknown" (probably Somali, imo).

Point being, not only, as Irish said, that African borders are porous, but that Islamist groups in the region tend to be quite diverse in their makeup, as hotspots (and, yes, Kenya is one) draw batshit-insane murderous Islamists from around the globe like flies to shit. Or is that shit to shit?

        1. Christophe   10 years ago

Ideology knows no borders. Ultimately trying to stop Islamic terrorism at the border is not going to be as effective as just hardening the targets. The single most effective response to 9/11 was having cockpit doors that lock.

          1. OneOut   10 years ago

The plane crashed into the muntain in Europe not long ago had cockpit doors that lock.

The copilot locked the capitan out and flew the plane into a mountain.

Doors that lock and walls that keep Mexicans out also keep Americans in.

I keep trying to tell my friends here in Texas that but they just don't listen.

Left wing attacks on porn are actually way funnier than the right-wing version.

Chris Hedges: Porn is what the end of the world looks like!

    "
"When you fight porn you fight global capitalism," she said. "The venture capitalists, the banks, the credit card companies are all in this feeding chain. This is why you never see anti-porn stories. The media is implicated. It is financially in bed with these companies. Porn is part of this. Porn tells us we have nothing left as human beings?boundaries, integrity, desire, creativity and authenticity. Women are reduced to three orifices and two hands. Porn is woven into the corporate destruction of intimacy and connectedness, and this includes connectedness to the earth. If we were a society where we were whole, connected human beings in real communities, then we would not be able to look at porn. We would not be able to watch another human being tortured.""

Members of the Supreme People's Assembly are elected in single-member constituencies, with one approved candidate put forward in each constituency.[8] Large groups of voters are presented with a ballot while moving through a voting booth, on which there is a single box to tick a candidate's name.[9] Voters must stop to cross out the candidate, making the process a monitored event.[2] Voting is compulsory in North Korea.[10]

100% of the vote on 99.97% turnout. And technically North Korea has a three-party system. In this way Communists have a loophole to get around "one-party state" and "democratic elections".

'Hey, sorry I burnt your house down. So I baked you a cake."

    1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

Supposedly, US tried to buy off Netanyahu with an arms package, and he told them to fuck off. So I guess, he can't exactly tell them to fuck off now. Unless he has Mossad put Pollard into hospital or something.

      1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

its one of the stupidest diplomatic gestures I've ever seen

You simply don't arbitrarily "give people stuff" unless its part of an exchange. (or just an Ipod or something)

And you don't do it to 'smooth things over'. Especially when its the kind of thing you'd do just as regular course of business (the guy was eligible for fucking parole in a few months anyway)

If Israel needs us more than we need them, then they'll deal with it. If we need them, then we should have included them in on the negotiations. Everything else is just fucking insulting.

        1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

          I can picture Obama's frustration.

"How hard can it be to buy off a bunch of Jews? Someone get me Rahm on the line!"

I'm glad to see that wine consumption is on target!

              It was a good one.

It's like to make up for lessening their nat'l security, we lessen ours.

        2. Dobranoc   10 years ago

the guy was eligible for fucking parole in a few months anyway

Which he was extremely unlikely to get given the nature of his crime. And until now the DOJ has said they want him to serve the full sentence.

          1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

So what? the point was that he did 30 years and is coincidentally almost eligible for release. its not exactly highly-exceptional clemency being offered.

    2. ant1sthenes   10 years ago

Wait, you can get people held captive as part of diplomacy? Someone should let the president know.

  44. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

Maybe we should just outsource PM links to Vox, Motherjones, and Huffpo?

    1. Pan Zagloba   10 years ago

Look, those are reasonable organizations staffed by reasonable people who will tell you the truth in rational, measured manner, backed by data.
What do you want, Mark Steyn on more political prosecutions in Canada? So distasteful!

      1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

I was thinking more like "news-news" sources. Where important shit happens and serious people report on it. None of this millenial, internet-gossip bullshit like Vox

I mean, if I relied on this place for "news" I'd almost never have learned about the Dallas Cowboys running back and his underwear-thieving ways

    Time for a booze thread.

Derailed is my after-work-before-housework beer. It's not bad. Earlier I had White Birch Brewing's Anniversary Ale, which was excellent.

    1. Crusty Juggler   10 years ago

I had one of these earlier, which I really liked a lot (I have to find out where to buy more). And one of these, which I did not, but I think that is mostly because I am not a stout man.

      1. DEG   10 years ago

        I'd go for both.

      2. OneOut   10 years ago

"mostly because I am not a stout man."

Are you just real skinny and weak ?

It's Ok and all. It's just the internet.

Gin and tonics for me tonight.

Survey: lemon or lime in your G&T?

      1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

Lime and lots of it (usually a whole one)

i'll peel and shred it and let the pulp float around in the glass.

Its because I had a gimlet thing for a few years. But gimlets are a quick way to burn a hole in your stomach. So a G&T with lots of lime provides a simulacra

        1. Zeb   10 years ago

I'm definitely in the lime camp as well. Though not that much.

A dash of Angostura bitters can be nice too.

        2. Swiss Servator, rudert schwer!   10 years ago

Bombay Gin Gimlets is the #1 reason I did so well in grad school...no, relli!

      2. DEG   10 years ago

I don't drink gin and tonics, but I prefer lemon over lime in other things, so lemon.

        1. Zeb   10 years ago

Gin and tonics are what summer tastes like.

          1. Crusty Juggler   10 years ago

Where I come from summer tastes like humidity and regret.

            1. DEG   10 years ago

Regret, yes, I know that taste.

Summer is Hefeweizen time. Actually, all the time is Hefeweizen time.

              1. *GILMORE*   10 years ago

                (thick, slurred german accent)

                Zat is voomins bier

vat, yoo put ze frooty inz it too? HA HA HA HA

                1. DEG   10 years ago

                  That guy is awesome.

                  1. DEG   10 years ago

                    Though he wastes wine.

              2. Swiss Servator, rudert schwer!   10 years ago

What makes Kaiserslautern Germany bearable? Besides the wine?....Halbliter after halbliter of Franziskaner Hefeweizen knocked back whilst sitting in St. Martin Platz.

                1. DEG   10 years ago

I haven't been to Kaiserslautern. I like that everywhere in Germany and Austria that I've visited that when I order a Hefeweizen no one asks what size I want. Der Kellner oder die Kellnerin gibt mir einen halbliter Hefeweizen. Nat?rlich! Das stimmt!

      3. Swiss Servator, rudert schwer!   10 years ago

        LIME, DAMMIT!!!!

      4. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   10 years ago

I prefer bourbon and water in my G&T.

    3. DEG   10 years ago

Since Swiss can't be the only one drinking heavily, I opened one of these.
