Rupert Murdoch Says Donald Trump Wrong on Immigration—Lindsey Graham Says Trump is 'killing my party'
Graham thinks Trump's an "economic genius," but his ideas on immigration aren't even economically literate.

While the prospect of immigration reform has more or less died in Congress for the remainder of President Obama's term, it's still a hot button issue in the burgeoning presidential campaign, at least on the Republican side. Democratic candidates, such as they are, have largely focused on sharpening their rhetoric on economic populism. Opposition to illegal immigration, and to the kinds of immigration reform that would make it easier for immigrants to enter the country legally, however, has, as in previous cycles, animated the Republican side.
In the speech announcing his candidacy a couple of weeks ago, Trump turned up that anti-immigration rhetoric to 11. That immigrants, especially illegal ones, tend to bring crime with them is a common, if inaccurate, trope on the right. In his announcement, Trump painted Mexican immigrants as being "sent" by Mexico, and that Mexico was "sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists." Trump added that he "assumed" some of the immigrants were "good people." His comments led to several companies, including NBC and Macy's, severing ties with Trump.
NewsCorp's executive chairman, Rupert Murdoch, "considered a conservative kingmaker as the man behind Fox News" according to CNN, weighed in:
"Mexican immigrants, as with all immigrants, have much lower crime rate than native born," Murdoch wrote on a verified Twitter account. He cited El Paso as one of the safest cities, and added, "Trump wrong."
A lot of research backs up the assertion that immigrants have lower crime rates, but it's not one accepted by a lot of Republican candidates. Few, however, are as willing as Trump to push the idea that immigrants are criminals so directly.
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, another Republican presidential candidate, sees Trump's rhetoric as a problem of optics.
Politico reports:
"Well, I think he said something that has brought people who are frustrated about our immigration system to light, but he also said it in a way that's going to kill my party," Graham said in an interview with CNN on Friday. "I would prefer that Donald Trump bring his economic genius and his talents to the table in a more constructive way," he added, noting the billionaire's charity efforts with military veterans and their families.
But the case against immigration isn't economically sound either. Immigration is good for the economy. 93 percent of adult male illegal immigrants participated in the workforce in 2009 and 86 percent of adult male legal immigrants did, compared to 81 percent for American-born adult males. The economic contributions of immigrants far outweigh the fiscal costs. It doesn't take an "economic genius" to understand that, just an economic literate. There's not too many of those running for president, either.

It's Trump's party and he'll make it die if he wants to.
Trump is the clown candidate this clown nation deserves.
Trump is an economic forest gump.
"Run, Trump! Run! No, no, it was a joke! Don't run! Dang it!"
Life is like a box of real estate deals.
"Stupid is as stupid odes."
OK, that one stands up as is....
"but he also said it in a way that's going to kill my party,"
Graham went on to add " and it's just not fair. Ive been trying to kill this party for years."
Jesus fucking Antichrist - aren't Trump's 15 minutes up? You idiots keep him in the spotlight, then wonder why some take him seriously. Fuck.
Honestly, who takes Trump seriously? It's a vanity campaign, and hardly the first of its kind. I'd spend my time insulting the candidates who are more likely to win their respective party's nomination.
The Democrats have nothing but crap on their side, and the GOP has some truly shitty candidates on theirs. Though, for once, the symmetry is broken by at least a few GOP candidates who seem to dislike aspects of big government to varying degrees.
^^ SEEEEEEE! ProL is actually Team Red! I KNEW it!
/Botox, Choney....others
I'm on TEAM FUCKTEAMS.
Ah - so you're with Warty.
Aren't we all.
/FUCK YEAH
Though, for once, the symmetry is broken by at least a few GOP candidates who seem to dislike aspects of big government to varying degrees.
Yet for some reason, all the media seems to care about is what batshit crazy Donald Trump is spewing this week, and what the big government lovers in the G OP - Jeb Bush, Christie, Graham, et al - are saying or doing to make themselves look like idiots as well.
Haven't they figured out how this shit works? Some republican says something pant shittingly stupid, at which the point the media plasters it everywhere for a couple weeks, implying that all RETHUGLIKKKANZ share those views. For once I have agree with Lindsey Graham: Trump is destroying the GOP. I sometimes wonder if his whole candidacy is just a false flag operation, but then I remember that he really is just a stupid and narcissistic blowhard.
Nah, the media is their own worst enemy, because they can't stay on one topic long enough to beat this into the public consciousness. I mean, really, who takes Trump seriously?
Besides Trump himself? Nobody. The only reason the media gives any attention is to reinforce the perception that all RETHUGLIKKKANZ are anti-immigration, just like they jumped all over Todd Akin's crap in 2012 to bolster the WAR ON WOMYN horseshit. You're right about their inability to stay on topic though, soon another shiny object will get their attention.
What troubles me is that Sanders isn't receiving similar treatment. An actual socialist is the default nominee when Clinton flames out completely. But we're okay with that, aren't we America? I get that he's not as personally annoying as Trump, but he's even more dangerous politically. And don't get me started on the unindicted felon or the Republican who wants to use the army against Congress.
As much as I would like to blame this on the media, I can't. A lot of people who should know better like Trump. He has at least for the moment, real support. He only has it because the GOP are a bunch of two faced shit weasels on immigration.
I don't buy that for a second. Some people may be all happy that he's attacking immigration policy, but he's a known clown, and people aren't suddenly forgetting that. Flavor of the moment, to be followed by the next one.
Look for Walker to start being the focus of attention, now that he's officially announced.
I hope you are right but I doubt it. Trump is nothing but another Perot only with immigration rather than the deficit as his issue. Perot was a clown too. A bigger one than Trump in many ways. And he still got 19% of the vote.
I think Trump's general history of clownery and self-promotion make him a much lesser threat than Perot, who most people knew nothing about before his run.
The economic contributions of immigrants far outweigh the fiscal costs.
Maybe.
We don't know how many illegals are in state prisons and local jails. No one is collecting those numbers.
And we can't be sure how many are collecting benefits because many states and municipalities bar asking applicants about their immigration statues.
immigration statues
Gunning for John's job, are we?
Bronze of Jose, the Farmer tilling the fields with his donkey
We all know every immigrant just wants to drive for uber or open up a free range organic taco truck.
Trump isn't what's killing the GOP. He's the political equivalent of Kaposi's sarcoma, an opportunistic infection that shows up in the late stages of a disease that's been killing the patient for years already.
In the GOP's case, it's a 20 year diet of populist resentment that's left the base of the party completely delusional and consumed by pervasive rage.
The GOP has more elected positions around the country, at all levels than they have ever had in the past.
That's a funny kind of political death.
Dragon exaggerates. But he gives an accurate description of why Trump is getting attention.
Reason could learn something from this too, but they won't. Reason is very clear that anyone who is left worse off by immigration is just a welfare queen racist who can go fuck themselves. Reason is happy to see open borders shoved down the throats of an unwilling majority.
The rise of Trump shows there are dangers to that. The majority might not like it and left with no other options is likely to turn to someone who is pretty horrible but opportunistic enough to listen to them when no one else will. That never works out well for anyone. If Reason thinks Trump is bad, continue to open the borders over the objection of large parts of the public and wait a few years and whoever is talking to them then will make Trump seem statesman like by comparison.
I believe you are spot on here, John
The conservative core of the GOP is getting very angry for good reason. Ever since Reagan left town, they have been voting for "Conservatives" who go to Washington to be Dem lites. The hate Graham, Boehner, McConnell, the Bushes and most of the rest.
Trump has tapped into it without much coherence. Cruz or Paul will benefit if they play their cards right.
He has tapped into anger over immigration. The GOP has made it clear they are dying to cut a deal with the Democrats and open the borders. And the people who object to that rightly feel that no one in Washington represents their interests. Trump is winning their support by default.
Yep. They have also given up on spending cuts, tax reform, stopping Obamacare or doing anything at all before the next election. Completely useless.
Exactly that. The only reason anyone is paying any attention to Trump is because people like Graham and most of Washington have told anyone who thought anything short of open borders was a good idea to go fuck themselves and that the country no longer belonged to them.
I wouldn't be shocked if Trump is on Hillary's payroll with the job of trolling the Republicans on this issue. If he is, the Republicans have no one but themselves to blame. If they hadn't been such complete two faced assholes and ceded the field to Trump, Trump wouldn't be able to do this.
Jeb Bush has on multiple occasions said in so many words Latin Americans are harder working and superior to natives such that the country's future lies with replacing the native population with racially superior Latin Americans. Hell, the guy claimed to be "Hispanic" on his voter registration card.
You tell all of these people to fuck off, you can't very well complain when someone you don't like takes advantage of that by listening to them.
Trump's been giving a lot of time to family members of people killed by illegal aliens at his events. Many of those are black people.
That alone, makes me doubt that he's a troll for Hillary because illegal immigration is the one wedge issue that could separate blacks from the democrats - especially for someone like Trump that isn't seen as a run of the mill republican politician.
And that would be absolutely lethal to the democrats at all levels.
That is a good point. I hadn't thought of that. Regardless, my overall point stands. If the GOP doesn't like Trump, they have only themselves to blame.
No hobby horse will dislodge the black vote from the democrats.
Nothing lasts forever.
LBJ gave it 200 years
told anyone who thought anything short of open borders was a good idea to go fuck themselves and that the country no longer belonged to them
Fire works better than sticks on straw men. Just sayin'.
Sorry, my more serious point is that I don't think I've heard anyone say this. What they have said is that immigration, like free trade, may harm certain sectors but is an overall net benefit. So yeah, there are going to be some losers in the short term, but we shouldn't hurt everyone else in order to protect some vested interests. And we also shouldn't treat people who want to work and contribute like pariahs just because they came from a different country.
There might be some extremists on the open border side who really just want to stick it to those white low-skill yokels, but I haven't seen them writing for reason or taking over the Republican party.

Which is nothing but a polite way of telling the losers to go fuck themselves for the greater good. And anyone who says we shouldn't give amnesty and just deport people here illegally is immediately dismissed as a racist.
There might be some extremists on the open border side who really just want to stick it to those white low-skill yokels, but I haven't seen them writing for reason or taking over the Republican party.
There isn't a single writer for Reason who doesn't support full amnesty and open borders. And there isn't a single figure in the Republican party, sans Trump, who is standing up and saying on no uncertain terms that we need to secure the border and not give amnesty.
Sorry but "we don't really call you are racist or tell you to fuck off in so many words" doesn't really disprove my point that the people who object to open borders are being told too bad you don't get a vote.
There is no argument John. The only possible motivation for such anti-immigrant passion is racism. And that should hardly be surprising given that racist hysteria has happened every single time a wave of immigrants has come to this country.
If you're for freedom you better have some damn goof facts and numbers on your side to be fervently anti-immigration. But you don't, as this site and many other sources have explained. What problem are you wanting to solve? Be specific.
Which is nothing but a polite way of telling the losers to go fuck themselves for the greater good.
No, it's a way of explaining one's position. Even the losers will benefit in the long run if they acquire new skills or out compete the immigrants. Seriously, this is free markets 101: in the short term there will be winners and losers but in the long run everyone gets richer. Vested interests that want to use government force to make everyone poorer so they can maintain the status quo aren't the heroes here. Intellectually you are putting yourself on the side of trade restrictions, unions, and buggy whip manufacturers.
And there isn't a single figure in the Republican party, sans Trump, who is standing up and saying on no uncertain terms that we need to secure the border and not give amnesty
For real? Republican opposition in Congress has been holding up immigration reform for, what, a decade? And it's always "we have to secure the border" and "no amnesty for illegals".
I know when you get into one of your frothing rages that you're only capable of speaking in hyperbole, but the idea that Trump is the only person in the Republican party that isn't pro-amnesty and open borders is delusional.
No, it's a way of explaining one's position. Even the losers will benefit in the long run if they acquire new skills or out compete the immigrants.
They disagree. And who says they must be forced to compete with the immigrants? Why should they have to? It is their country? Of course, you don't see it that way. They don't get a choice. IF they don't want to compete with the immigrants you bring in, they can go fuck themselves.
Seriously, this is free markets 101: in the short term there will be winners and losers but in the long run everyone gets richer.
No, overall we get richer. Everyone doesn't get richer. Markets don't guarantee everyone wins, only that things get richer in the aggregate. The average American could get much poorer but the country overall much wealthier as immigrants and the employers who benefit from their cheap labor end up better off.
For real? Republican opposition in Congress has been holding up immigration reform for, what, a decade? And it's always "we have to secure the border" and "no amnesty for illegals".
By barely a few votes and over the objection of pretty much every GOP leader.
And Trump is the only person that people feel like they can trust not to sell them out on the issue. That is what is happening here. They trust the GOP and figure they will end up being like you and think it is the voters' duty to be worse off so you and your cronies get rich.
They disagree. And who says they must be forced to compete with the immigrants? Why should they have to? It is their country? Of course, you don't see it that way. They don't get a choice. IF they don't want to compete with the immigrants you bring in, they can go fuck themselves.
Nice. Employers being able to hire freely = "forcing people to compete with immigrants". You're better than that type of reasoning.
This whole paragraph is basically they definition of cronyism. "Why should I have to compete with some upstart? Because it's a free country? Fuck that. I'm going to get my friends in the capital to make them get MY permission first."
as immigrants and the employers who benefit from their cheap labor end up better off
By selling products at lower cost to average Americans. And that makes them poorer...how?
Yeah, someone who isn't willing to get new skills or move to a job where they are more competitive isn't going to do so well. But it won't be because there aren't any opportunities. Meanwhile, new and/or cheaper products and services will be available.
Or you can ask the government to protect you from reality. That does seem to be the default position in America these days.
This whole paragraph is basically they definition of cronyism. "Why should I have to compete with some upstart? Because it's a free country? Fuck that. I'm going to get my friends in the capital to make them get MY permission first."
Yes everyone who objects to any limit on immigration is an evil crony or racist. I get that. You consider the positioning to be completely beyond the pale. That is why people who hold it are listening to Trump. You are just proving my point for me.
This whole conversation is like every one on immigration us talking past each other. You don't think borders are legitimate and thinks anyone who wants them enforced is no different than a welfare queen or a crony capitalist. I get that.
We can't resolve this because we can't agree on the assumptions of the argument. Understand, you are doing exactly what I am talking about. According to your logic any objection to immigration is an illegitimate position driven by bigotry or laziness. You can hae that position and indeed all of official Washington shares it with you. But don't hold it and then bitch and moan when people listen to Trump. You hate their guts and think their position is beyond the pale. Sorry but they are not going away and are not going to accept being told by people like you they have no right to have a say in their government.
What problem are you trying to solve John? (Enforcing the rule of law is circular talk and you know it. There are plenty of laws you don't like I'm sure.)
Yes everyone who objects to any limit on immigration is an evil crony or racist. I get that. You consider the positioning to be completely beyond the pale. That is why people who hold it are listening to Trump. You are just proving my point for me.
The only point proven here is that conservatives are crybaby retards who will fawn over anyone that indulges their victim complex.
Yes everyone who objects to any limit on immigration is an evil crony or racist
No, just the people who invoke cronyist or racist arguments.
You don't think borders are legitimate and thinks anyone who wants them enforced is no different than a welfare queen or a crony capitalist. I get that.
No you don't, because I've never said that. I'm on record here in H&R as saying that protecting the border is a legitimate government function. I'm also on record as saying that I think open borders with Canada is a good policy, but that open borders with Mexico is not because of the security situation. I think it's perfectly legitimate to keep out criminals, to test for infectious diseases, etc. But I don't think we should restrict peaceful people who pose no risk from coming here to work and contribute if they want.
According to your logic any objection to immigration is an illegitimate position driven by bigotry or laziness
No, again, just the specific arguments you seem to be making.
But don't hold it and then bitch and moan when people listen to Trump. You hate their guts and think their position is beyond the pale.
No, I don't. I understand their position. I am just trying to explain why I don't share it, and why I think someone who consistently advocates for liberty in other areas shouldn't share it either.

they have no right to have a say in their government
Of course they have a say in government, but libertarians aren't small-d democrats. We think there are limits on what government can do. I don't think it is a legitimate exercise of government power to tell people they can't come here and peacefully work because it is disruptive.
IF they don't want to compete with the immigrants you bring in, they can go fuck themselves.
Yup that's how a free country works.
Yup that's how a free country works.
Says the Canadian chickenhawk whose country I have to ask permission to visit because of a DWI 15 years ago...
"In the GOP's case, it's a 20 year diet of populist resentment that's left the base of the party completely delusional and consumed by pervasive rage."
Wouldn't this apply even more to the other party?
Of course. The Democrats are in a really bad place now--witness their "field" of candidates in an open election. Not to mention the huge losses they've taken in almost every other electoral category. However, given the Manichean nature of U.S. politics, that only means they're down until the GOP pisses off enough people while in power, then they'll have electoral success again.
Still, I don't recall seeing either party this messed up during my lifetime, and that's saying something. Perhaps more about the status of American culture than about the Democratic party, but still.
Naturally, I think the GOP is fucked up, too, and would love to have a viable, more libertarian alternative (speaking in general, not accounting for the few quasi-libertarians they do have).
Yes, but is "just as crazy as the Democrats" really a good goal for the GOP?
Are they really, though? At least some of them are focused on good stuff, like reducing spending and tax reform. I've long viewed them as not doing anything to stop the bus heading for the edge of the cliff, but the Democrats of late seem to want to slam their foot on the accelerator.
I loathe both parties as political institutions, but it's not symmetrical. Not these days.
a 20 year diet of populist resentment that's left the base of the party completely delusional and consumed by pervasive rage.
I thought you were talking about the Republicans here, not the Democrats. /sarc
You could describe both parties that way though. The Republicans spew populist cap about immigration, the Democrats spew economic populist class envy crap.
"He cited El Paso as one of the safest cities,..."
Welp - here's ANOTHER view.
the FBI warns against any ranking that compares safety from one city to another because they ignore geographic, demographic factors and cultural, educational, recreational or religious characteristics
WTF?
I know - that one caught my eye, too
also, I guess they are making the case that DWI deaths are violent crimes... I guess, but definition that's true... but it's more like fatal negligence... or somfin'.
I dunno. I just thought a "local's" opinion on this is always interesting to me. I don't live down there, so all I know is what I read or hear from my cousins in the area. And they sure don't think it's "one of the safest" places to live...
Perhaps compared to Juarez?
Yeah - we had operations in Juarez back in the day. We DON'T any more. What a fucking hellhole.
'nuff said...
People THINK all kinds of things. People think their kids are going to be stolen and sold into white slavery- but it doesn't make it true.
SPENCER, HAVE YOU NOT BEEN READING FACEBOOK? CHILDREN ARE BEING SPIRITED FROM EL PASO TO JUAREZ TO BUTT CHUG DRUGS AND GUNS!!! KIDNAPPING AND TEH DRUGZ! DANGEROUS!
I know. That's why we NEED THAT WALL- and colonel jessup to order the code red!
Trump on THAT WALL would be AWESOME - Mexicans shooting at him every night. God - it's beautiful to imagine...
Um, yeah. So?
also, wouldn't we assume that if they do it, so does everyone else? so it all comes out in the wash.
Lindsey Graham Says Trump is 'killing my party'
Maybe Lindthey and his sugar daddy should leave the republican party then.
They left me.
I don't really like Trump for a number of reasons.
But I support his candidacy for the entertainment value. Not least that he, like Palin before him, does an outstanding job of getting douche-bags to self out themselves.
^^ this so much. He's a clown, but he draws out the SERIOUS idiots like honey for bears, so he serves a purpose for me.
Kevin Williamson at NRO has just gone off-the-rails, slobbering hate on him. I generally enjoy Williamson - but he's already an ANGRY person, all the time (seems that way anyway), but I'm getting to be concerned about his health, what with the foaming at the mouth about Trump.
Dude - he Ain't. A. Serious. Candidate.
Ignore, chillax, move on....
I read that. And Goldberg has gone just as much off the rails. The problem is Trump or his supporters. The problem is that the GOP has totally destroyed any trust conservatives have in the party. Trump is doing well because he is blunt spoken. Conservatives assume anyone who isn't blunt spoken is really a phony waiting to sell them out. And given the GOP's track record, that is a pretty reasonable assumption.
I think Williamson and Goldbetg are annoyed because Trump may be saying things conservative in a red meat fashion, but that ignores that Trump has no ideological consistancy over the years. This is either part of Trump's mercurial personality, or a cynical manipulation of GOP voters.
In any case, Trump's support seems to have less to do with who Trump is than the GOP base's contempt for most GOP pols.
Trump is a clown and in no way a conservative. But he is only getting a hearing because the GOP has fucked up so badly so many times.
My solution to US budget deficit: charge for Biden-Trump debates, then syndicate them world-wide.
It'd be better than UFC!
Two words: Money. Maker!
i like it
Let us also not forget what a sad state the MLB would be in if it weren't for immigrants.
No Jose Altuve (but it really should be kosher to call Venezuelan immigrants refugees now, right?), no Grant Balfour, no entire population of the Dominican Republic...
Baseball is already in a pretty sad state, but I blame sabermetrics for that.
i do long for the days when someone couldn't stay on a major league roster if they hit under .250 (unless they were a catcher, ss, or pitcher.)
The strike zone is now the size and shape of a sideways postage stamp and they still can't hit it.
Remember "knees to the chest"? That's what they taught us in little league.
You ever try to hit a chest-high curve? Not easy.
But - yeah - now it's like "waist to just-below-the-waist"....and ain't no Ted Williamses out there any more.
Evan Gattis can do it. He can hit home runs off of eye level fastballs. Now if he could just hit more than .240...
I would argue that the strike zone is actually bigger now than it was during the 90's and early 00's. It's not as wide, but taller.
Of course, once they get rid of ump calling balls and strikes and replace them with computer sensors adjusted for each batter, we'll see how things go.
There's so many things that piss me off about baseball anymore, even at the lower levels. Pitchers trying to throw every pitch as hard as they can( which leads to shortened careers, pitch counts, and other bullshit). Hitters taking the same approach with 2 strikes as they do with none( and looking at strike 3!). Kids playing one sport year round.
I coached a high school baseball team for one year. All the kids except 2 also played football for me. I taught my pitchers to locate their fastball and change speeds. I taught everyone my approach at the plate( including " if you look at strike 3, you better walk to the other dugout"). We made the playoffs in our first year of having a team. After I left they got some former minor league player who was into all the saber bullshit and haven't made the playoffs since.
/End rant
HAH! I remember taking a 3rd strike ONCE in little league. I'm fucking FIFTY THREE! Still remember that lecture.
Never took another called third strike 🙂
I loved playing the game as a kid. Then I just....didn't any more. Now I can't watch it - it's just....boring.
Now - football or motorcycle racing, OTOH....
But sadly is there really any way to counter "Trumpmentum" once it has been unleashed?
It wouldn't seem as there is any logic that can stand up to populism.
Trump's massive ego will ensure that he will go own to fight his own insurgent third party challenge once he has been eliminated from the GOP running.
Even with the most optimistic option of Senator Rand as nominee, Trump will split the anti-Clinton vote and ensure her a massive Electoral College win.
The Democrats will retake the Senate and at the very least severely whittle down the GOP majority in the House.
"Trumpmentum"
THAT is an awesome word! Will steal...
No one has a right to be a part of any political party. The R's can't stop Trump from saying he is a Republican but they could disavow him and exclude him from any official party functions, no?
Get on it Lindsey.
If Trump was gay, being a blowhard would be considered a good thing.
We are not living well enough for Trump to be gay and been on the point for gay marriage. If he were gay he would have long been one of Reason's favorite politicians. Watching them try and square that with him turning on the sacred immigrants would have had real entertainment value.

Considering Trump is and has always has been a big Hillary Clinton supporter maybe he is just making stupid remarks so Queen Hillary can paint all Republicans with her broad brush she so likes to use.
