You know, after hearing writer after writer say "Bonjour, scum" to the Hit & Run commenters, I feel it necessary to respond. There are a great many of us who are successful professionals, who, in our personal lives, are civil, respectable, and live without much conflict of any kind with our fellow man. The fact that some of us vent and make outrageous remarks in a quasi-pseudo-anonymous manner doesn't really say much about the people doing the commenting, nor does ignoring all of the serious comments, some by people far more expert on topics than the writers who post the article being commented on, seem fair or appropriate.

While I'm not one to make jokes about doing violence, except maybe occasionally suggesting that we bring back tarring and feathering, it's obvious hyperbole, intended and understood as such. Just because it comes across as incredibly offensive in a newspaper article or when heard in real life, it doesn't make it something that has to be deplored along with a shot at all of the commenters here every time it's mentioned. I think the more appropriate response is to laugh it off as people blowing off steam and their frustrations with an out-of-control government and to note that plenty (though not a majority) of the commentary is serious, erudite, and worth plowing through some of the horseplay to read. . . .

. . .Frankly, most of the criticism seems to come from people who write for a living. I think that makes whatever you write take on more importance--it's your profession on display to the world--and creates a perspective that everything written in public has to be taken seriously. That makes it harder for you to understand just how commenters can act with such disregard to common decency at times, but it's almost all blowing off steam and venting frustrations in a forum of libertarians--something that's near impossible to find anywhere else.

In any case, I'm glad that Reason and team are fighting back, and I look forward to many more articles highlighting these sorts of abuses.

Authorities say Tarpon Springs residents reported a loud bang at a home early Monday morning. Florida man Dick Oranges bit store employee, swung knife at him

Oranges, of Naples, was confronted earlier this month by the managers of an unidentified store and a loss prevention officer, who saw him go into a dressing room and leave without the clothing he brought in, the Naples Daily News reported this week.

Fat is back: New guidelines give vilified nutrient a reprieve

The problem is that you can't have a race driven society if you have significant intermarriage. Once people start intermarrying, you can no longer define what it means to be of a particular race. Without intermarriage, the definition is easy, you are whatever race your parents are. Once the races start intermarrying, you have people that can't be defined by their parents. Army defends naming bases after Confederate soldiers

The Army defended its practice of naming forts and posts after Confederate Army generals Wednesday, saying they are meant to memorialize historic figures, "not causes or ideologies."

School To Ban Rebel Mascot and "Dixie" Fight Song

Football fans at Southside High School in Fort Smith, Arkansas have been cheering for the Rebels and Singing Dixie for more than 50 years.

But that long time tradition is about to end, according to television station KFSM.

Fort Smith educators said the song and the mascot are perceived symbols of racism. Here's the statement they posted on the district's Facebook page:

"Giving great consideration to the continuing impact of perceived symbols of racism on the community, state and nation, the Fort Smith Public School Board convened as a Committee of the Whole tonight and passed a motion to discontinue the use of "Dixie" as the Southside High School fight song in the 2015-2016 school year, and to phase out the use of the Rebel as the Southside mascot in the 2016-2017 school year."

So starting next year ? the students will no longer be able to wish they were in the land of cotton.

Obama loses temper with heckler at White House gay rights rally

President Barack Obama took on a heckler head-on at a gay pride month reception at the White House Wednesday, scolding the protester for being disrespectful in "my house."

The heckler had interrupted Obama's remarks by protesting the detention and deportation of gay, lesbian and transgender immigrants.

The president responded, "Hold on a second." When the heckler persisted, Obama, flashing an exasperated look, countered, "OK, you know what?" Wagging his finger and shaking his head, Obama said, "No, no, no, no, no," repeating the word more than a dozen times.

French tax drivers' Uber protesting turning into riot, Uber drivers attacked

Today's taxi driver protest is getting out of hand. According to the police, 2,800 taxi drivers are protesting today against UberPOP, the European equivalent of UberX. With UberPOP, everybody can become an Uber driver ? taxi drivers see the service as unfair competition as they have to get a special license. Yet, this doesn't really explain why cabbies are now attacking Uber drivers, burning and breaking their cars.

The police has already arrested a taxi driver and an Uber driver. The cabbie was throwing projectiles toward the police, while the latter was attacking a cabbie. It is currently very difficult to go to Charles-De-Gaulle and Orly airports as taxi drivers are blocking the roads. Taxis are also controlling many parts of Paris, looking for Uber drivers.

There are other protests happening right now in Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon and Lille. It's the biggest protest so far against the urban transportation company in France as UberPOP has been expanding to new French cities.
