    4. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

You know, after hearing writer after writer say "Bonjour, scum" to the Hit & Run commenters, I feel it necessary to respond. There are a great many of us who are successful professionals, who, in our personal lives, are civil, respectable, and live without much conflict of any kind with our fellow man. The fact that some of us vent and make outrageous remarks in a quasi-pseudo-anonymous manner doesn't really say much about the people doing the commenting, nor does ignoring all of the serious comments, some by people far more expert on topics than the writers who post the article being commented on, seem fair or appropriate.

While I'm not one to make jokes about doing violence, except maybe occasionally suggesting that we bring back tarring and feathering, it's obvious hyperbole, intended and understood as such. Just because it comes across as incredibly offensive in a newspaper article or when heard in real life, it doesn't make it something that has to be deplored along with a shot at all of the commenters here every time it's mentioned. I think the more appropriate response is to laugh it off as people blowing off steam and their frustrations with an out-of-control government and to note that plenty (though not a majority) of the commentary is serious, erudite, and worth plowing through some of the horseplay to read. . . .

      1. Pro Libertate   10 years ago

. . .Frankly, most of the criticism seems to come from people who write for a living. I think that makes whatever you write take on more importance--it's your profession on display to the world--and creates a perspective that everything written in public has to be taken seriously. That makes it harder for you to understand just how commenters can act with such disregard to common decency at times, but it's almost all blowing off steam and venting frustrations in a forum of libertarians--something that's near impossible to find anywhere else.

In any case, I'm glad that Reason and team are fighting back, and I look forward to many more articles highlighting these sorts of abuses.

Not quite a shameless plug today.

'Not quite' because it's not a plug per se, it's still blatantly shameless advertising.

We have a teaser version of the cover for my next book available At the artist's DeviantArt page. The main inspiration was the style of the classic Pulp SF covers.

While we were working on the cover it spawned a joke based off of the concept of "Hero menaced by robot". Only this time, the robot was a roomba.

Warning: some of his other art might be not safe for work depending on your workplace. The cover and the joke are perfectly safe.

Grantland has decided to try to become a bigger player in grievance mongering ? starting with being offended by Seth Macfarlane:

      http://grantland.com/features/.....rage-bear/

How's this for contributing to the ultimate PUSSIFICATION of America:

You never expect a movie to hurt you. Disappoint? Dismay? Depress? Fine. But when a movie has a field day asserting the humanity of a fake toy bear at the expense of your own, it hurts.

Goddamn! IT's not like it matters if the movie is funny or not, right? No, what matters is Seth Macfarlane's fucking politics:

MacFarlane would seem to identify as progressive, but he uses his liberalness conservatively, to berate what he thinks is normal or safe or established in American culture. His tolerance is tinged with intolerance.

Liberalism is eating itself. Makes me kinda want to go see that movie?

      1. Lady Dalrymple   10 years ago

Makes me kinda want to go see that movie?

        No.

Even if the Libertarian Moment squirted out of Seth Macfarlane's ass, I would not go see this moment because I saw the first one.

        1. Lady Dalrymple   10 years ago

          movie.

          1. UnCivilServant   10 years ago

I won't see if because so far the creator has failed to make anything I found entertaining.

      2. UnCivilServant   10 years ago

okay... what does that have to do with the cover?

        1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   10 years ago

          1. UnCivilServant   10 years ago

And I don't have much patience for purile fools today.

            1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   10 years ago

You didn't read the Seth M link? That is the joke that the article writer seemed to feel was the complete death of humanity.

No need to be thin skinned. It's not like you've never posted here before.

      5. Not a Libertarian   10 years ago

The author won a Pulitzer in 2012 and now he is ranting about Cam Newton's ejaculate.

      6. Irish Says Enough Woodchippers   10 years ago

"It's tricky. MacFarlane would seem to identify as progressive, but he uses his liberalness conservatively, to berate what he thinks is normal or safe or established in American culture. His tolerance is tinged with intolerance. In Ted 2, Michael Dorn and Patrick Warburton play a brutally masculine, interracial gay couple. Dorn played Lieutenant Worf on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Warburton, among other characters, played a live-action TV superhero called the Tick. Here they show up at New York Comic Con in their respective costumes and lay waste to nerds. At that moment, the gag moves from their being absurdist gays ("We're gonna tie our dicks together") to their being bullies irrespective of their gayness. Where precisely the joke is depends on what you find funny at either extreme."

So in other words, Seth MacFarlane chooses to make jokes about subjects leftist puritans say ought not be joked about. If anything, this makes me like Macfarlane more, given that I've hated him up until now.

I think it's hilarious that he argues MacFarlane uses his liberalness conservatively, which actually seems to be the opposite of what he's doing. The people using liberalness conservatively are those declaring entire fields of comedy off limits because they offend the progressive movement, which is now basically an establishment movement that controls the universities and a large portion of our government.

        The progressives are the conservatives.

        1. John Titor   10 years ago

MacFarlene is the guy who has his characters time travel back to Nazi Germany just so he can make a 'Republicans=Nazis' joke. You have to be delusional to think MacFarlane 'uses his liberalness conservatively'.

      7. Red Rocks Rockin   10 years ago

        Translated from Media Fop-ese:

At that moment, the gag moves from their being absurdist gays ("We're gonna tie our dicks together") to their being bullies irrespective of their gayness. Where precisely the joke is depends on what you find funny at either extreme. whether MacFarlane is mocking white cis-hetero shitlords and/or Bible Belt conservakins, who are the only acceptable comedic targets.

    66) After we've removed the Confederate flags and symbols from state houses and license plates, how long will it be until we ban their display altogether, even by private citizens? Think I'm being hyperbolic? Not in the least. I honestly think we're about five years away from book burnings of anything that mentions the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, etc., in even the most vaguely positive way.

They only want "reasonable, common sense" laws. The odd thing is that 5 minutes after passing a reasonable common sense law they're pushing for more - which seems to suggest that the reasonable common sense law they just passed was not reasonable and common sense enough. If they could only once give me an example of a law they would find unreasonable and beyond common sense, I might buy their protestations that they're not lying shitbags intent on disguising their totalitarian intent.

If your organization goes out and tells the colored people of the country that it is a humiliation, they will so regard it, but if you do not tell them so, and regard it rather as a benefit, they will regard it the same. Study ranks Tampa as America's sweatiest city

    We're No. 1!

Fan company Honeywell Fans partnered with a team of scientists at an environmental consulting company to create a ranking of America's sweatiest cities. Tampa topped the list, with our Florida neighbors Miami and Orlando making the top five. The rankings were based on how much heat is trapped in each metropolitan city.

Dr. Ted Myatt with the consultant, Environmental Health & Engineering, said aside from obvious measures like humidity and wind speed, factors like the number of residential buildings or heavy industry can affect heat levels.

I have no reason to believe that 100% of the problems with those relations don't originate with the costumed gangsters enforcing unjust statutory law.

        1. sarcasmic   10 years ago

It's not even so much that as the fact that the police are completely lawless. Their authority comes from their law enforcement duties, so legally they have no authority over anyone unless they have reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed. Though in practice anything they say to anyone is considered a lawful order, even if it is not, and they can use any amount of force that they feel is necessary, including deadly force, to make people comply. And nothing else happens.

Luckily for sociopathic power trippers the US and state statutory codes are enormous and vague. More laws than any other society has lived under in all of human history. Combine that with an extremely servile judiciary and the pyschology of your average cop, and you have roving gangs of unaccountable thugs ruining lives with the same ease that you or I post comments on Reason.

Florida Man, 85, Arrested After Explosion Rattles Neighbors

Authorities say Tarpon Springs residents reported a loud bang at a home early Monday morning. The Tampa regional bomb squad was called in to investigate and found a hand grenade had detonated in the home's backyard. The blast damaged the home, shattering rear windows and breaking concrete. Police say four people inside the home were not hurt.

Police executed a search warrant on a neighbor's home and found military-grade explosives, including anti-personnel mines, a shotgun and a hand grenade.

College tuition waiver considered for children of county staff, teachers

Commissioner Dennis Frazier, R-District 3, introduced the proposal at a June 10 joint meeting between the commissioners and the school board as a way to attract and retain teachers in Carroll. Frazier again brought up the idea at the community college's board of trustees meeting on June 17.

"My idea is anyone who works for Carroll County should be able to send their kids to Carroll Community College for free. If we can start with teachers, we could eventually offer free tuition to county employees," said Frazier, an ex-officio member of the community college board.

There is not a sense of entitlement to free tuition believe me - our sense of entitlement lies in the fact that our students are high performing, our teachers are high performing and our workload is ever increasing however our pay has decreased over 8 years. I have been a teacher in Carroll County for 7 years and I have seen my pay decrease because of a frozen pay scale and the rising cost of health care. We are entitled to better pay - free tuition is peanuts for a teacher who has 2 small children and a Masters Degree already.

Florida man Dick Oranges bit store employee, swung knife at him

Oranges, of Naples, was confronted earlier this month by the managers of an unidentified store and a loss prevention officer, who saw him go into a dressing room and leave without the clothing he brought in, the Naples Daily News reported this week.

Oranges resisted their attempts to bring him back into the store, pushed the manager away and bit the officer's arm hard enough to break the skin, police said. He then allegedly pulled out a knife and swung it at the officer. When the store workers backed away, Oranges fled in a gold convertible.

Muaz told Newsbeat: "We wanted to make a product that will make life simpler, easier, better."

    this explains a lot:

Chemical in hoppy beer may cause man boobs and erectile dysfunction

Hops are the female flowers of the hop plant and have high levels of phytoestrogen, or estrogen for plants. This is what Stephen Harrod Buhner, an herbalist and author, believes is causing the problem. In his book, Sacred and Herbal Healing Beers (which came out in 1998, by the way, and somehow ended up in several trending pieces online recently), Buhner notes that hops found in your favorite IPAs could potentially lead to man boobs.

Hops were historically used in herbal medicine pre-1500s to treat insomnia and as a source of phytoestrogen to help with menopause and endometriosis among women. Hops might have also been used to reduce sexual desire among monks, though it's difficult to substantiate whether it really worked. Of course, we've all heard that when you're too drunk, you can't keep it up ? and this is where the term "Brewer's Droop" comes from.

The Rise of the Compliance Guru?and Banker Ire

"In the old days, you dealt with one regulator when you had an issue, maybe two," the JPMorgan Chase CEO said on a call with investors in January. "Now, it's five or six. It makes it very difficult and very complicated. You all should ask the question about how American that is."

Fat is back: New guidelines give vilified nutrient a reprieve

In the case of dietary fat, the committee did not find a health benefit to limiting the amount of total fat in the diet, whereas the 2010 and 2005 Guidelines stated that total fat should make up no more than 20% to 35% of total daily calories. The committee did recommend keeping the level of saturated fat, which is found in foods such as cheese, butter, whole milk and beef, to within 10% of total calories.

"We wanted the emphasis to be on fat quality rather than total fat, because the evidence really emphasizes that saturated fat is the driver of risk rather than total fat intake," said Barbara Millen, president of Millennium Prevention and chair of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.

Erdogan sees threat from Kurdish gains in Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly angered by the victory June 15 of Syrian Kurdish and rebel fighters over Islamic State (IS) forces in Tell Abyad, a Syrian town close to the Turkish border.

The influx of more than 23,000 Syrian refugees to Turkey as a result of the latest fighting brings the total number to nearly 1.8 million, the most Syrians hosted in any country, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Fehim Tastekin wrote June 14, "Erdogan's anger with the operation to oust IS from the region became evident when he said on June 11, 'The West, which is hitting Arabs and Turkmens of Tell Abyad from the air, is sadly settling the PYD [Democratic Union Party] and PKK [Kurdistan Workers Party] terror organizations in their places.'"

    something something lobotomy

Psychosurgeons Use Lasers to Burn Away Mental Illness

A brain surgeon begins an anterior cingulotomy by drilling a small hole into a patient's skull. The surgeon then inserts a tiny blade, cutting a path through brain tissue, then inserts a probe past sensitive nerves and bundles of blood vessels until it reaches a specific cluster of neural connections, a kind of switchboard linking emotional triggers to cognitive tasks. With the probe in place, the surgeon fires up a laser, burning away tissue until the beam has hollowed out about half a teaspoon of grey matter.

This is the shape of modern psychosurgery: Ablating parts of the brain to treat mental illnesses. Which might remind you of that maligned procedure, the lobotomy. But psychosurgeries are different. And not just because the ethics are better today; because the procedures actually work.

Kevin Williamson: We Have Officially Reached Peak Leftism

If it seems to you that the Left has, collectively, lost its damned mind as the curtain rises on the last act of the Obama administration, you are not imagining things. Barack Obama has been extraordinarily successful in his desire to ? what was that phrase? ? fundamentally transform the country, but the metamorphosis is nonetheless a good deal less than his congregation wanted and expected. We may have gone from being up to our knees in welfare-statism to being up to our hips in it, and from having a bushel of banana-republic corruption and incompetence to having a bushel and a peck of it, but the United States of America remains, to the Left's dismay, plainly recognizable as herself beneath the muck.

The reason there is a black market is that salt is available outside of the school, similar to how guns are easily available in Chicago because there are guns easily available in Indiana.

If salt were to be banned in totality, inside and outside the school, you would not have a black market.

What does it mean to be white?: Dylann Roof, Rachel Dolezal and the ugly legacy of the Rhinelander case

Strangely, these dramatically divergent stories must occupy some shared space for me, because both speak to the dangerous availability of black bodies as a location to vent, dump, exorcise or exacerbate our pathological relationship to race as a nation. Moreover, the black womanhood that Dolezal appropriates and that we deem newsworthy, much like the identity of the 200-year-old Emanuel AME Church, is framed within an unspoken but century-long national ambivalence ? not only what about space black bodies should occupy, but more important, what space black bodies should occupy in relation to whiteness. Dylann Roof reacted to his perception that black bodies were gaining too much power by exercising the most deranged exemplar of white privilege. Rachel Dolezal ? as an artist depicting black life, then a white woman suing a black institution, then assuming a black identity, then courting white animus by falsifying racist complaints ? flexed muscles that were strengthened by historical privilege. And in the end, black bodies remain the repository for the purging that happens as we continue to evade the question: "What does it mean to be white?"

The problem is that you can't have a race driven society if you have significant intermarriage. Once people start intermarrying, you can no longer define what it means to be of a particular race. Without intermarriage, the definition is easy, you are whatever race your parents are. Once the races start intermarrying, you have people that can't be defined by their parents. At that point, the "definition" becomes pretty much whatever they want to call themselves. You can get around that a little by having strict segregation. With segregation there isn't a common culture and you can define people by which side of the tracks they live. But with intermarriage and integration, the whole system falls apart.

The old white supremacists understood this and made intermarriage illegal. The race obsessed Progs are too delusional to understand that widespread intermarriage and integration is going to doom their system.

Debate over rebel flag widens to include all symbols of Confederacy

The debate over the rebel flag that began anew after last week's church shootings in Charleston, S.C., has morphed into a full-blown Confederate controversy.

While Stars and Bars have long been associated by many with slavery, the latest campaign to remove Confederate emblems has extended beyond the flag to statues, memorials, parks and even school mascots. Never has the debate over what symbolizes heritage and what stands for hate covered so much ground, as efforts to strip icons that have been part of the visual and cultural landscape of the South for decades are afoot at national, state and local levels.

In one Arkansas town, the school board voted unanimously Tuesday to ban the song "Dixie" for the next school year and phase out "Rebel," the school's mascot.

"It came to our attention that the public has been pretty upset about the Confederate flag, which has already been removed, the rebel mascot [and] the playing of the 'Dixie,'" Fort Smith, Ark., school board member Susan McFerran told reporters after the board voted for the changes.

The Confederate flag is not enough: Why our new race debate misses the point
You can kill a symbol, but it's not as easy to extinguish an idea -- or the gun politics that help enforce it

(NRA President) Porter's statement (note the way he says "my Southern boys") is a reflection of the ways in which we've allowed a debate over the removal of a flag to usurp the conversations we should be having instead. In addition to fighting the legacy of slavery?as well as America's broader racial issues?Porter shows that racism and opposition to gun control often go hand in hand.

While they're treated as separate issues, research has shown they're all part of the same problem?white supremacy. In 2013, Pacific Standard's Tom Jacobs reported on a study from Australia's Monash University, which found that a "high score on a common measure of racial resentment increases the odds that a person will (a) have a gun in the house, and (b) be opposed to gun control. This holds true even after other 'explanatory variables,' including political party affiliation, are taken into account."

Army defends naming bases after Confederate soldiers

The Army defended its practice of naming forts and posts after Confederate Army generals Wednesday, saying they are meant to memorialize historic figures, "not causes or ideologies."

The scrutiny comes after the deadly church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina and amid hotly-contested debate over Confederate flags and other symbols of the Confederacy. Many Army posts in the South are named for Confederate soldiers.

The Army's top spokesman, Brig. Gen. Malcolm B. Frost, issued a brief statement in the aftermath of questions about whether the military ought to consider changing the name of bases like Fort Bragg, North Carolina, which is named after the man who led the Confederate Army of Tennessee, Gen. Braxton Bragg.

"Every Army installation is named for a soldier who holds a place in our military history," Frost said. "Accordingly, these historic names represent individuals, not causes or ideologies. It should be noted that the naming occurred in the spirit of reconciliation, not division."

School To Ban Rebel Mascot and "Dixie" Fight Song

Football fans at Southside High School in Fort Smith, Arkansas have been cheering for the Rebels and Singing Dixie for more than 50 years.

But that long time tradition is about to end, according to television station KFSM.

Fort Smith educators said the song and the mascot are perceived symbols of racism. Here's the statement they posted on the district's Facebook page:

"Giving great consideration to the continuing impact of perceived symbols of racism on the community, state and nation, the Fort Smith Public School Board convened as a Committee of the Whole tonight and passed a motion to discontinue the use of "Dixie" as the Southside High School fight song in the 2015-2016 school year, and to phase out the use of the Rebel as the Southside mascot in the 2016-2017 school year."

Its a tactical ploy to gin up a cultural conflict. Where are the "Bad Guys" when we need them? Pick a fight over the fucking flag.

i don't think its actually going to work. Obama loses temper with heckler at White House gay rights rally

President Barack Obama took on a heckler head-on at a gay pride month reception at the White House Wednesday, scolding the protester for being disrespectful in "my house."

The heckler had interrupted Obama's remarks by protesting the detention and deportation of gay, lesbian and transgender immigrants.

The president responded, "Hold on a second." When the heckler persisted, Obama, flashing an exasperated look, countered, "OK, you know what?" Wagging his finger and shaking his head, Obama said, "No, no, no, no, no," repeating the word more than a dozen times.

As the heckler continued to talk over him, Obama took it up a notch.

"Hey. Listen. You're in my house," he said to laughter and woos from the crowd. "You know what? It's not respectful when you get invited to somebody. You're not going to get a good response from me by interrupting me like this. I'm sorry. I'm sorry ... Shame on you, you shouldn't be doing this."

"Now everyone, shut up and get back to adoring me!"

French tax drivers' Uber protesting turning into riot, Uber drivers attacked

Today's taxi driver protest is getting out of hand. According to the police, 2,800 taxi drivers are protesting today against UberPOP, the European equivalent of UberX. With UberPOP, everybody can become an Uber driver ? taxi drivers see the service as unfair competition as they have to get a special license. Yet, this doesn't really explain why cabbies are now attacking Uber drivers, burning and breaking their cars.

The police has already arrested a taxi driver and an Uber driver. The cabbie was throwing projectiles toward the police, while the latter was attacking a cabbie. It is currently very difficult to go to Charles-De-Gaulle and Orly airports as taxi drivers are blocking the roads. Taxis are also controlling many parts of Paris, looking for Uber drivers.

There are other protests happening right now in Nice, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon and Lille. It's the biggest protest so far against the urban transportation company in France as UberPOP has been expanding to new French cities.
