• At a campaign stop today in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton is expected to unveil a plan calling for tax credits for businesses that hire and train apprentices.

• A New York appeals court heard arguments yesterday over whether to release the grand jury minutes from the Eric Garner case. Garner was the Staten Island man who died after NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in a chokehold. The grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo despite video evidence showing Garner's death.

• California has cut off the water to the upscale town of Mountain House.

• Neil Young is not happy about the fact that his song "Rockin' in the Free World" was played at Donald Trump's press conference yesterday. 

• The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers last night to win the NBA championship.

When you point out to the luddites that follow the "big government" religious movement that their faith is misplaced and examples like this prove it, they tell you that nobody is perfect and we just have to deal with things like this when they happen. Asking them if that logic should be applied to the private sector and that their proposed solution of letting government do anything and everything then seems stupid, only serves to have them resort to name calling you for pointing out the flaw in their reasoning.

Statists just hate a system which rewards/punishes people for their choices, and want one where equality of outcome, even if that outcome is misery, is enforced. That sort of thinking doesn't come from anything positive.

In my exp this is the biggest difficulty to arguing libertarianism from a consequentialist perspective. If you point out some horrifying consequence of government incompetence, the progressive argues back that the right people just weren't in charge. The empirical observation that increasing government intervention always produces the same sorts of outcomes, though it is there to be seen, doesn't register for people who want to believe otherwise. So I usually just end up arguing the case for freedom on more a priori grounds.

You have to remember the people in the Obama administration are all career political operatives or academics or maybe work in some nonprofit thing. All they know how to do is talk. All they have ever done is talk and been rewarded for saying the right things. So they have convinced themselves that talk is all that matters. If they just say the right words, things will happen.

The Obamacare website debacle was a great example of this. They said "build a website". The President said "failure is not an option". So they thought it would happen. Same thing here. They had a security program. They said the networks must be secure. No one was more shocked than they were when that didn't happen. They said the words didn't they?

The Obama Administration has been among other things an eight year tutorial for the country on the difference between cleverness and competence.

Pittsburgh Man Charged With Robbing Bank With a Sex Toy

Stein was arrested after a PNC Bank in the Pittsburgh suburb of Crafton was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money Monday. Crafton Police Chief Mark Sumpter told NBC station WPXI of Pittsburgh that Stein "stated he had a bomb, showed the teller wires hanging out from his shirt and demanded cash."

The robber drove off in a white Toyota, which was pulled over on a ramp to northbound Interstate 79 by Robinson Township police, Sumpter said.

This is an unarmored tracked vehicle, in military parlance, it would be referred to as a carrier, and could likely be used in either a logistics or recon role.

...Obamacare's premium subsidies are paid each month directly to insurance companies, to ease the burden of health coverage to eligible customers in the health law's government exchanges. The payments add up: the federal government doled out almost $2.8 billion to insurers in just the first four months of 2014, when Obamacare launched.

The agency tasked with making the payments hasn't yet made sure the calculations behind the billions are accurate. An inspector general audit of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has found that the administration did not confirm the exact amount it owed each insurer before paying up, putting the billions in federal taxpayer funds at risk.

The problem lies in HealthCare.gov's unfinished back-end system. The portions of the website which allow insurers to communicate enrollee information with the federal government hasn't yet been completed and was even less workable in 2014, when the outlays began....

He mentioned sort of off-handedly that African-Americans with light skin often used to pass as white, but now with Rachel Dolezal we have an example of somebody going the other way. Somebody said this was simply an extreme example of a wigger, a white dude or chick who adopts aspects of black culture to seem cool. But I think Dolezal goes to a level beyond this, and for a different reason as well. She didn't (just) want to seem cool, she was passing as black to collect the privileges associated with the status blackness gives her in society. In the 1960s this would have sounded ridiculous, but I think in the future we will see this more often. It would be stupid to say racism doesn't exist anymore, but I think we're long past the point where structural racism is a serious impediment to the advancement of ambitious blacks. Increasingly, especially in spheres like academia or government service, it's the other way around: being black is a benefit and whites who are able will try to take advantage of this.

Incentives matter. When you're a white person in academia, particularly the liberal arts, you're constantly told your opinions don't matter or are invalid (CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE!). So you "change" race. If you're good enough to fool people you suddenly become relevant again.

Any system that is based around the exclusion of some people based on arbitrary characteristics invites and fosters fraud.

People faking their race combined with the rise in the number of interracial people will completely destroy the system. The reason why it was illegal for the races to marry in places like the Jim Crow South and Apartheid South Africa was not because the ruling whites thought it was icky. It was illegal because if the races started intermarrying, the entire system fell apart. You can only hand out privileges based on race if you can tell who is what race. Intermarriage makes that impossible. Sure you can treat the interracial like the inferior race but their existence in large numbers allows people of one race to pass for the other. As there are more interracial people in this country it will become impossible to tell if someone who claims to be black is really black or even interracial or just a white person with some Sicilian genes and a good tan. That will destroy the whole rotten system.

Afterimage and Red Sector A, both from Grace Under Pressure (which, while a bit synth heavy is one of my favorite albums). The former is a very touching reflection on the death of a friend and the latter is about life in a concentration camp, based on Geddy Lee's mother's experience in the Holocaust.

Officer fired and arraigned for stealing evidence.

The former State College police officer accused of taking cocaine and prescription drugs from the department's evidence room was arraigned in Philipsburg on Tuesday.

Thomas Dann, 59, of Bellefonte, was released on $50,000 unsecured bail after arraignment before District Judge Allen Sinclair. Court documents indicate that Dann waived a preliminary hearing at the proceedings.

State police filed charges against Dann on Monday. He faces 23 counts each of two drug charges, 14 counts of evidence tampering and a theft charge. Dann's employment with the borough ended Friday after almost 27 years on the force.

Despite almost certainly being on a list due to posting here, Customs didn't harass me when I came back into the country.

Due to having a shorter connection than I would like at Atlanta and being very, very hungry, I decided to cave and use the new style porno scanner instead of getting the taxpayer funded grope. The decision had its benefits. I got through security fast enough to get some biscuits and gravy for breakfast and I said exactly zero words to the TSA goons. The TSA goons that I count only said two words to me. I don't count the TSA goon that was braying and yelling at people about how to get their stuff ready for the X-Ray machine, I would have had to listen to her nonsense whether or not I caved on the porno scanner.

Together with other encrypted and also-free communications offerings, like TextSecure, Signal, and RedPhone, ProtonMail makes relatively (let's emphasize that) secure communications accessible to pretty much everybody.

From the scant details they give ProtonMail seems like it may be better than nothing.

But TextSecure/Signal/RedPhone and ProtonMail shouldn't really be mentioned together at this point. The former come from a well-known, accomplished security research (Moxie Marlinspike); the latter comes from, err, idk, some random nerds? I'm sure they're very smart, but none of them mention any security background.

And TextSecure in particular (and to an extent Signal, by extension, since it's based on the same protocol) is not just open source but has been professionally audited; ProtonMail, err, uses some open source libraries and uh, has a bug bounty?

Oh, and did I mention the "scant details" thing? Maybe they're hidden somewhere hard-to-find, but ProtonMail's website does a piss-poor job describing their architecture for users with technical/security knowledge... we're just left to read between the lines and guess what they probably would do based on the mostly-non-technical descriptions they give.
