Yes, Emma Sulkowicz Appeared in a Pornographic Art Video. Doesn't Mean Much.

Emma Sulkowicz
Columbia Spectator

Emma Sulkowicz, the Columbia University student (now graduate) who carried her mattress everywhere as both a protest against her alleged rapist and as an art project for course credit, recently appeared in a pornographic art film titled "Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol," which means "This is not a rape."

The 8 minute video, which is not suitable for work, comes with a disclaimer that the content could trigger survivors of sexual assault. The disclaimer also makes clear that the sex in the video is "absolutely consensual," but was staged to resemble a rape.

The scene features Sulkowicz having sex with an unidentified man in what appears to be a college dorm room. The man's face is blurred, protecting his identity, but everything else is shown. Their sex eventually becomes abusive—the man hits Sulkowicz twice and chokes her; she tells him to stop, but he doesn't listen. Again, they are merely acting out a scene, and he does not actually rape her, though they do at least appear to have real sex.

Artnetnews.com confirmed that the woman in the video is indeed Sulkowicz:

"I may not be able to answer many of your questions," Sulkowicz wrote to us when we reached out to her over Facebook and asked her about the video directed by Lawson. Sulkowicz also agreed to be interviewed. When asked if she wanted people to view the video as a follow-up to the mattress performance, Sulkowicz wrote back, "Separate. It has a diff title."

Sulkowicz also presents the viewer with a series of questions to ask themselves before, during, and after their experience of viewing the film, including "Are you searching for proof? Proof of what?," "What do you want from this experience?," "How well do you think you know me? Have we ever met?," and "Do you refuse to see me as either a human being or a victim? If so, why? Is it to deny me agency and thus further victimize me? If so, what do you think of the fact that you owe your ability to do so to me, since I'm the one who took a risk and made myself vulnerable in the first place?"

Both critics and supporters of Sulkowicz will probably try to read something into her decision to make this film, and maybe that's exactly what she wants. But whatever Sulkowicz's intentions here, the film doesn't tell us anything about what happened between her and Paul Nungesser. As the title of the film suggests, this video does not depict an actual rape, just a scripted scene made to look like a rape.

You can watch the movie here, but be warned, it's highly unsuitable for work and may disturb some viewers.

      But she's sooo brave!

  2. Cis-Gendered Shitlord   10 years ago

Wait, Wait, wait wait wait. She made this video AFTER she was allegedly brutally raped? She made this video to re-enact what happened that night?

How many fucking rape victims would be willing to relive a rape? Not just dramatically re-enact it, but re-enact the exact experience, sex and penetration and all? That would be like a torture victim wanting to videotape his experiences of getting his fingernails ripped out over again. It would take a seriously disturbed mind.

    Possible explanations:
A: Emma enjoyed doing this video, because she wasn't raped in the first place and she's into kinky sex.

B: Emma was reluctant about sleeping with Nungusser, but felt like she needed more attention and she loves the cock, so she did it with some other guy. She might even say later that this new guy raped her and now she has video evidence to prove it, and that she was coerced into saying otherwise, because, you know, "no perfect victim".

C: Emma was actually raped by Nungusser, and, since she is a batshit insane sadist, decides to relive this traumatic experience exactly again.

Which do you guys think? Or are there other possibilities?

    1. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

Let me preface by saying I don't believe her claims. I don't know if she believes them. It's highly possible that she told herself early on she needed to be a victim to lead The Cause and maneuvered that hapless Kraut to unwittingly play the role of her monster when none other presented himself.

I'm guessing right now she lives in a rape culture echo chamber (aside from outside noise generated by rape apologist journalists like Cathy Young and easily dismissed anonymous internet dissenting voices) telling her this was a good idea for The Cause. They may have believed attention was slipping away and therefore The Cause was in danger of losing ground to some other shiny object for the public's focus. They probably felt they needed something really provocative like a shocking video performance. But like most who live in a bubble they failed to appreciate what motivates the outside world.

If the video was meant to change any minds, I'm sure it did but not in the way they intended.

I'm starting to think that this woman is desperate for attention.

    1. Migrant Log Picker   10 years ago

I think that assumption is pretty safe.

    2. WuzYoungOnceToo   10 years ago

Along those same lines, I'm beginning to think that water is wet.

  5. Migrant Log Picker   10 years ago

According to the time stamp on the video was shot in 2012....what's the timing of her alleged assault by Nungasser?

Yeah, I was thinking the short blue hair was her new look but maybe it is just her new old look.

    2. Cro's Innumerous Basterds   10 years ago

I don't think you should take the time-stamp as accurate. It was clearly meant to reference the night of the alleged rape by Paul N.

  6. Ken Shultz   10 years ago

"As the title of the film suggests, this video does not depict an actual rape, just a scripted scene made to look like a rape."

I presume Robby is familiar with Magritte and Ceci n'est pas une pipe, but maybe he isn't.

If there's anything ironic about the film Sulkowicz made, it's that people often call for the censorship of sexually explicit films like this--and the implementation of Title IX, that Sulkowicz has cited and relied on, often seems to entail various forms of censorship.

I suppose it would be interesting if Sulkowicz were trying to suggest that dragging around a mattress wasn't a real allegation of rape, but it was. It was an allegation of rape.

Anyway, I don't see why people should believe her more now, after willingly subjecting herself to being beaten up during sex, than they did before. This is a message piece without a coherent message--not even an ironic one. I think this piece means her 15 minutes is up.

If she wanted to do something truly ironic, she might have filmed herself "raping" a consenting "victim".

    1. Comrade F. Stupidity, Jr.   10 years ago

I presume Robby is familiar with Magritte and Ceci n'est pas une pipe, but maybe he isn't.

        I have this laminated:

"Hi Robby! Thanks for stopping by! One small correction: I don't think you've ever "reported" a goddamn thing in your life. (And because I know you're going to do this, either here or in my Twitter mentions, which you and your friends are currently stink-clouding up with your Feelings, I have a master's degree in journalism from Columbia and I write investigative stories. Have done for years, both at Jezebel and before I got here. Thanks for asking!)

Instead, I think, as I made clear above, that you're piggy-backing on the work of other people who are calling Erdely's story into question without a single shred of evidence. You don't get brownie points for saying *IF* the story is true *THEN* UVA should have called the cops. That's what any decent human being would suggest."

Her 15 minutes may not be up, looks like she's got a good 15 months in the porn indusry factory ahead of her...

    1. Ed Ucation   10 years ago

Not only is it unsuitable for work, it's also unsuitable for anything else, except for inviting the hilarious comments people are leaving under the video.

  11. Paul.   10 years ago

I'm not sure this video portrays a rape. It portrays what possibly could be called an 'assault during consensual sex.'

  12. thrakkorzog   10 years ago

Damn it, I'm out 20 bucks on this one. A buddy of mine and I were discussing this at the bar, and I bet 20 dollars that she would go use this as a platform to get hired by some various victim rights group, and Crazy Larry said she would do porn. Crazy Larry argued that Asian chick porn pays better than being an MSNBC talking head.

On the bright side, whenever I lose a bet to Crazy Larry, he's usually nice enough to buy me a Guiness.

    1. Paul.   10 years ago

After seeing this I'm thoroughly convinced we'll start seeing her in... porn porn within the next couple of years.

"The kind of control you're attempting simply is... it's not possible. If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that porn will not be contained. Porn breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh... well, there it is. I'm, I'm simply saying that porn, uh... finds a way."

Why not both? Get hired by a victim rights group, and do Asian chick porn at night.

    1. John C. Randolph   10 years ago

        lol

      2. JRS1001   10 years ago

Agreed - she is unstable. Can't wait to see the next stunt she pulls to keep attention on her self.

BTW real victims want nothing more than to be left alone to pick up the pieces and get back to a "normal" life, not continuously try to tell the world about it.

Sulkowicz also presents the viewer with a series of questions to ask themselves before, during, and after their experience of viewing the film...

Add to that list of questions: Should the character clean her dorm room or continue being the college girl stereotype? Are both characters in this film guilty of rape from the start as no affirmative consent is clearly given at any time? Why do you think Lincoln Chafee believes he has any chance of becoming president?

Her parents are both shrinks. Based on what I've seen of their daughter's behavior, I have to conclude that they're incompetent.

Most psychologists do not make much money.

Psychologists have a median pay of a little under 70K a year but that is boosted by Industrial-Organization Psychologist? who charge those "$125-$285 / hr counseling rates".

      4. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

Can confirm. I know a psychologist who has had coworkers with various mental illnesses like split personality disorder, schizophrenia...

  18. straffinrun   10 years ago

I expected that video to be the worst thing ever viewed by human eyes. Yet somehow it managed to be worse than that. A stroke of insane genius.

    1. Lanceman   10 years ago

Apparently you've never stumbled into Lena Dunham getting boned over at PornHub.

  19. docweasel   10 years ago

I think it's a bid for sympathy. Any reasonable person would pity someone being raped. I felt sorry for Jody Foster in The Accused, even though I knew that in reality she was not being raped. I think this is a bid for sympathy by coopting the pain and sympathy an actual rape victim must endure and elicit, respectively. I also think it's a cynical bid to try to recover from the damage to her reputation the actual facts have caused her "mattress girl" persona.

I could claim to be a holocaust survivor and appear in a movie where I lose all my love ones and endure torture and disease and all manner of hardship and you would probably feel sorry for me. But that doesn't make me a holocaust survivor in reality, although I coopt their deserved sympathy.

    You missed the best part:

If you watch this video without my consent, then I hope you reflect on your reasons for objectifying me and participating in my rape, for, in that case, you were the one who couldn't resist the urge to make Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol about what you wanted to make it about: rape.
Please, don't participate in my rape. Watch kindly.

This is stream-of-consciousness crazy. The whole post is just a word salad of various female victim memes. Taken as a whole, there is literally no way to pull together a coherent voice.

I'll give her this - it does match the pretentious attitude of many a freshman art project. I had plenty of friends in the art department, and it was common to see them make a piece and then post-hoc add all sorts of verbal embellishment in an effort at making it "deep". Still, how the author of this managed to graduate from an upper-tier university is beyond me.

Oh, and no, I didn't watch your little film. Rape fantasy is not my thing, even if done well. Poorly done it must be just excruciating.

    1. Vapourwear   10 years ago

Why? Upper tier Unis are shit. Doesn't Harvard have like an80% admission of cheating rate among freshmen?

That would be a valid point if she actually intended any of her statements to make sense. I suspect her words are meant purely as visual and/or auditory design elments, not as expressions of any meaning. And their purpose here is clearly to titillate, not to engage.

  30. space junk   10 years ago

This woman that is absolute trouble!!!!!

Seems to me like it is her way of life.

  31. Paul Berror   10 years ago

    Fucking wow.
A few thoughts: if she intended this "performance" to somehow spread an anti-rape message (she is, after all, trying to "change the world"), I think that providing the world with even more rape porn jerk-bait (a completely foreseeable outcome; as this video will certainly end up on the porn sites, viewed and stroked to by legions, and utterly devoid of the context that apparently makes it "art" and not just "porn") might be the worst possible way to accomplish that. I'd guess that most activists for this issue would agree, and I doubt very much that she consulted many of them beforehand.

Also: college kids today can't read Ovid- it's too triggering. Law students can't abide class discussions about rape law- it's too traumatic. But THIS girl (so brave!) is not only able to survive a brutal anal rape, but can act it out for the cameras? Most rape victims find re-living (let alone re-enacting) their experience nauseatingly difficult, if not impossible, even on the witness stand.

So; either Ms. Sulkowicz is VERY special indeed, or everything we have learned about rape trauma and victim behavior is wrong, or it's something else altogether.

I'll never understand the depths of some people's desperation and/or lack of standards.

Emma Sulkowicz is obviously suffering some kind of mental health problem, and, damn, she is unattractive in the extreme. This Nungesser fellow has had to learn a lesson, the very, very, hard way.

No matter how lonely you are, how long it's been, how many white knight delusions you are entertaining - do not touch chicks like this, ever.

    1. Cdr Lytton   10 years ago

The unattractiveness is shocking for someone of her age. It's not some inherent beauty but that she doesn't seem to give a shit about herself which supports the cuckoo theory. The only redeeming feature is the lack of tats and piercings.

The problem is that, no matter how bright he is, the odds of a straight male of college age running away from in invitation to "fuck me in the butt" from any female with a reasonably decent body are somewhere between 0.0% and not-a-chance.

    Is this woman employable ANYWHERE??!!

  37. Ted Colt   10 years ago

"The 8 minute video, ...comes with a disclaimer that ...makes clear that the sex in the video is "absolutely consensual," but was staged to resemble a rape.

    ...[again]."

    1. DEATFBIRSECIA   10 years ago

      Nice.

  38. The Grinch   10 years ago

Excellent move on the guy's part. There's no way anyone should ever bang that woman without being filmed.

  39. Libertarian   10 years ago

This is absolutely shocking! (not the movie, but the fact that the blue mattress isn't on eBay yet).

    1. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

She's holding out for the best offer from a museum or collector.

  40. 68Whiskey   10 years ago

"does not depict an actual rape, just a scripted scene made to look like a rape."

Much like her statements regarding Paul Nungesser.

Why the hell would someone who claims to be a rape survivor agree to be in a video like that? Wouldn't that be too triggering (I mean legitimately triggering, not the phoney baloney triggering like law school lectures about sexual assault laws and shit)? Doesn't this add more credence to the theory that she made up the allegations against Nungesser? Does she want even fewer people to believe her? What a dumbass. Did judge Napalotano hack my reason account?

  45. Jacques   10 years ago

I think it's incredibly revealing of what happened that night because it reveals a very confused notion of what consent is.

Basically, she has put this out there for the world to see and is now saying that if you watch it for the wrong reasons, you are participating in her rape. If you watch it, and it's not out of kindness to her, you are participating in her rape.

I think you can tie this to her allegations: getting consent to sex by deception is rape. If your theory is that she had consensual sex with Nungesser that night and expected a long term relationship, and he didn't follow through, so she felt raped...

Then this piece makes 100% sense. The problem is that it's not rape.

    1. Lorenzo Valla   10 years ago

It's not rape in the traditional sense, but almost any sex can be contrived as rape by some people.

    2. Lorenzo Valla   10 years ago

According to http://hr.umich.edu/stopabuse/.....ions.html, which is a resource for employees of the U of Michigan, sexual violence has a lower threshold than what most sane people would consider:

"Examples of sexual violence include: discounting the partner's feelings regarding sex; criticizing the partner sexually..."

So, by definition, if a partner disregards another's feelings regarding sex, they have committed sexual assault, and sexual assault is usually conflated with rape.

Crazy world out there folks. Be careful.

Robby, my man, you're a credit to Reason and all that, but you have the same problem as Ron (which he's currently demonstrating a few posts up) - you continue to extend the benefit of the doubt to people who don't deserve it, long after it should be obvious that they're dishonest or evil or, in this case, crazier than a sack full of ferrets on meth who've just gotten a good look at the doomcock of doom.

    1. WuzYoungOnceToo   10 years ago

      ferrets on meth

That'd be a great band name.

  48. DoubleC   10 years ago

There is the old Loveline-era Dr. Drew Pinsky theory that porn stars go into porn to relive their sexual degradation of a rape or molestation. But they aren't reliving the EXACT incident (well, maybe if Max Hardcore is making the film), and they also swear up and down denials of abuse. I doubt Jenna Jameson ever asked to film a spoof of the football team gang rape she talked about in her book.

    1. Puddin' Stick   10 years ago

That's a common theory amongst psychologists.

  49. Free Society   10 years ago

I found literally one person in all those Disquis comments who were supportive of her. The rest ranged from ridicule to antipathy. I have a tiny bit more faith in humanity seeing those comments. I can't believe I'm saying that about Disquis....

    1. macsnafu   10 years ago

More sites are using Disqus for their comments. Maybe Reason should, too. It makes it easier to track comments and replies. I haven't found any easy way to track comments at Reason except to keep going back to the articles themselves.

    2. DoubleC   10 years ago

Her supporters don't need to go there. They probably have their own threads on it at places like Jezebel and Feministing. It's safe there.

      1. Lorenzo Valla   10 years ago

  53. Michael Morrison   10 years ago

What's really amazing is that she thought that this was a good idea.

  54. Lorenzo Valla   10 years ago

Next stop is a duo with Jackie where Erdely plays a dominatrix forcing them to assault each other. Ya know, just to make you think...

  55. Michael Morrison   10 years ago

Too traumatized to report this for 7 months, but has no problem packing her rape mattress around campus for most of a semester.

Then, after contacting the cops, she stops cooperating with them because she can't bring herself to talk about it with them.

But she has no problem making a porn video about it.

    Jaw dropping.

  56. Arisuka   10 years ago

She knows her 15 minutes of fame is up, so she's still trying to stay relevant.

I do want to know, is what man with even half a brain fuck this woman? Not only is she clearly crazy, but she's already accused at least one man of rape. She's not even attractive looking.

I guess some guys do only think with their dick.

  57. Pope Tyrannicus XVI   10 years ago

Under the feminist definition of consent, how can we be sure she wasn't ACTUALLY raped in her pr0no? The male actor must have balls bigger than Ron Jeremy's.

  58. julenochoa   10 years ago

" the film doesn't tell us anything about what happened between her and Paul Nungesser". On the contrary, it is further evidence that she is a liar.

  59. deutschtorrie   10 years ago

I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I've been doing,

What do you think? Did EmmaSulkowicz come to be raped by your eyeballs or dare we wonder our if our common sense and notion of the delicate balance of male female dynamics came to usurped by shock and awe of the staged phony and unsubstantiatedkind which mandates a woman's gender is license enough to always be a rape victim or one kiss on the cheek from a male away ?.
