The Pentagon is challenging the building of islands by China on the reefs of the South China Sea, a disputed area.

  • A grand jury indicted the six Baltimore police officers in whose custody Freddie Gray suffered a fatal spinal injury on most of the charges the prosecutor was seeking—but Marilyn Mosby dropped charges of "false imprisonment," based on the legality of the knife police said they found in Gray's possession. In the meantime, protests followed the shooting of two unarmed black men in Olympia, Washington accused of shoplifting beer—they survived, and the investigation into the shooting was handed over to an outside Critical Incident Team.
  • The city of Charlotte, North Carolina, settled a lawsuit filed by the mother of Jonathan Ferrell, fatally shot by a police officer in 2013 while seeking assistance after a car accident, for $2.25 million, and says the payment is not an admission of guilt.
  • The president of the Boy Scouts of America called on the organization to lift its ban on gay leaders.
  • The pipeline that ruptured along the coast of California near Santa Barbara was operating at about two-thirds capacity.
  • A three year expedition around the world by the Tara Oceans Consortium to collect genetic information from plankton uncovered thousands of new viruses living in the ocean. Researchers from the University of California in Santa Barbara, meanwhile, have confirmed some species of octopus can see with their skin.

      Hello.

"...Mass civil disobedience as a new stage of struggle can transmute the deep rage of the ghetto into a constructive and creative force. To dislocate the functioning of a city without destroying it can be more effective than a riot because it can be longer lasting, costly to the larger society but not wantonly destructive. Finally, it is a device of social action that is more difficult for the government to quell by superior force.

The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis but it must be followed by a sense of futility."

I can't believe I got in to the game last night - club level seats, second row at that...and was treated to one of the more boring hockey games this year.

I think Coach Q is concussed - breaking up a line that was actually generating chances to put in Turn Over Man (Versteeg) and The Weakest Player in the NHL (Nordstrom). The Ghost of Kimmo Timonen needs to be released from its Earthly bounds too.

They still might be able to get their act together, but an, that was uninspiring.

At least my buddy from Afghanistan got to be on the ice for the Anthem.

That was awesome by the way. My wife always comes to listen to that and then leaves.

49 Former NASA Scientists Send A Letter Disputing Climate Change
    Select excerpts from the letter:

"The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA's history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements."
"We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated."
"We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject."

    1. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

Do we really need NASA? Don't we have multiple private companies who can get into space now? Maybe NASA should get out of the way and let those companies do their things.

    57) Last summer I was in Nebraska for a family reunion. Out driving with my uncle through the endless corn fields, he pointed out how depopulated the area is now, compared to a century ago when each quarter-mile lot (i.e., 40 acres) had a family, and often those families had 8-10 kids. Then he said how we romanticize those times as peaceful and low crime, but he thinks there was all kinds of shit that went down that we don't remember. For one thing, there were lots of traveling salesmen and wandering preachers and so forth who could commit crimes and leave without a trace. Say an itinerant worker came to your area, and you hired him on for a season. Your sixteen-year-old daughter is spending a lot of time with him, and one day they both up and disappear, and the family never hears from her again. Folks then would have said they ran away together to get married. Well, probably, but a lot of the time it was something more nefarious. The parents didn't have time to investigate?they had a farm to run, they had 8 other kids, and anyway she was 16 and practically an adult. As for law enforcement, at best you had only a sheriff and a deputy, and teen-agers leave home all the time, so unless there's specific evidence of a crime they weren't going to look into it. If this itinerant worker had fled to another state there was basically no chance he would be caught for any sort of crime. I think my uncle was probably right?this sort of thing must have happened all the time.

Former UN Lead Author: Global Warming Caused By 'Natural Variations' In Climate
Global temperature change observed over the last hundred years or so is well within the natural variability of the last 8,000 years, according to a new paper by a former Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) lead author.

Dr. Philip Lloyd, a South Africa-based physicist and climate researcher, examined ice core-based temperature data going back 8,000 years to gain perspective on the magnitude of global temperature changes over the 20th Century.

What Lloyd found was that the standard deviation of the temperature over the last 8,000 years was about 0.98 degrees Celsius? higher than the 0.85 degrees climate scientists say the world has warmed over the last century....

You know. If this actually blows up, I might have the opportunity to convert someone. My family has been moving further and further left because they trust that any policy based in "science" should be enacted (notice the quotes). If the tides actually change, I might be able to convince them that tearing up the economy with mass regulations on a shoddy studies say so could possibly not be the best idea.

Then that bit 'em in the ass, when it turns out letting someone rule your life can have bad consequences. I'm not sure if they've substituted in the state for the old group of caretakers or if they are just trying to get as far away from their old ideology as possible.

    Krugbe!!!

BUSTED: Paul Krugman removed 20 years of data from a chart to show a correlation that wasn't really there
...The period in the early 1960's was removed, and so was the period from 2000 on. In other words, out of a 55-year time period, Dr. Krugman decided to remove 20 years' worth of data. For those keeping track, that's removing almost 40% of an entire data set just because the data didn't fit the narrative. And when you add those years back you get a result that shows a very weak correlation...

NYT commenters are boring. Nothing worse than educated (and in some cases well-read, articulate) people with horrible comments.

    7. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

That's amazing. It's incredible because both the 60's period and the early 2000 period show a massive divergence that completely contradicts Krugman's argument. So all he really has is a 30 year period where the funds rate and the housing starts linked up. So since he only has one connected 30 year time frame where this was the case, how does he know that that particular 30 year time frame wasn't a random outlier and that the 60's and 2000s situation isn't the actual natural order of things?

This is one reason economics kind of sucks. We actually have a very small amount of data because we've only been reliably collecting this kind of information for like 70 years. An outlier period can therefore heavily skew the information because of how relatively small our dataset is.

      1. Swiss Servator, Kaffee bitte!   10 years ago

They don't call it "the Dismal Science" for naught.

      2. Overt   10 years ago

We actually have a very small amount of data because we've only been reliably collecting this kind of information for like 70 years.

It's not just the lack of time series, but also the fact that they are trying to model a complex system.

Two very important characteristics of Complex systems are Leverage Points and Non-Linearity. High-Leverage points are variables in the system where changing the value can vastly change the behavior of the system- Krugman is insisting that the Fed is one of these high leverage points, changing the behavior of housing starts. What these people always miss is that there are probably hundreds of other leverage points in the system that could have additive or confounding effects. It is simply nonsense to insist that housing starts is so dependent on one other variable.

Non-Linearity suggests that even when you have found a good leverage point, you won't necessarily get a linear change in the system as you linearly scale the variable. The "Law of Diminishing Returns" is a perfect example of non-linearity. The expanded chart implies that in a narrow band of values,(-5.0) - (-10.0), the Fed Funds Rate may affect housing starts, but once it goes sufficiently outside those bands, it doesn't have the same response.

Here's a paragraph from Krugabe's column today expressing his displeasure with the Obama Admin's handling of TPP. The last sentence is a doozy considering the source:

But other reasonable, well-intentioned people have serious questions about what's going on. And I would have expected a good-faith effort to answer those questions. Unfortunately, that's not at all what has been happening. Instead, the selling of the 12-nation Pacific Rim pact has the feel of a snow job. Officials have evaded the main concerns about the content of a potential deal; they've belittled and dismissed the critics; and they've made blithe assurances that turn out not to be true."

7 ideas completely lost on people who are 'fiscally conservative but socially liberal'

How many liberals and progressives have heard this? It's ridiculously common. Hell, even David Koch of the Koch Brothers has said, "I'm a conservative on economic matters and I'm a social liberal."

    And it's wrong. W-R-O-N-G Wrong.

You can't separate fiscal issues from social issues. They're deeply intertwined. They affect each other. Economic issues often are social issues. And conservative fiscal policies do enormous social harm. That's true even for the mildest, most generous version of "fiscal conservatism" ? low taxes, small government, reduced regulation, a free market. These policies perpetuate human rights abuses. They make life harder for people who already have hard lives. Even if the people supporting these policies don't intend this, the policies are racist, sexist, classist (obviously), ableist, homophobic, transphobic, and otherwise socially retrograde. In many ways, they do more harm than so-called "social policies" that are supposedly separate from economic ones. Here are seven reasons that "fiscally conservative, socially liberal" is nonsense.

      5. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

Indeed, you can't separate fiscal issues from social issues. Look at Salon's examples:

1: Poverty, and the cycle of poverty. Broken families make poverty worse. You can have poor, intact families, as in the depression where families were more cohesive than today, so broken families aren't the *sole* cause, but by the same token this indicates that poverty isn't the *cause* of broken families.

2: Domestic violence, workplace harassment, and other abuse. - If you're interested in avoiding domestic violence, it's better to have a husband/spouse than a live-in lover - the latter are more likely to be abusers.

3: Disenfranchisement. Telling voters that they cannot decide policy matters, which will instead be decided by federal courts and regulatory agencies, *is* disenfranchisement.

4: Racist policing. Race-baiting (a cultural issue) distracts attention from the abuses of police culture - not that there's never police racism, it's just a broader issue.

5: Drug policy and prison policy. - Yeah, privatization is the only prison policy which gives people an incentive to perpetuate the prison system.

6: Deregulation. With a regulatory state, it's easier for the govt to break up traditional, time-tested institutions (like the family).

7: "Free" trade. - A culture of work, flexibility and deferred gratification is the best way to deal with unstoppable globalization.

Yeah. There's nothing more hateful than not giving special treatment to certain groups of people. I mean, treating them like they're equals? That can only be explained by hatred. In reality, you're somewhere on the spectrum between collectivist and individualist. Authoritarianism is a form of collectivism, libertarianism is a form of individualism.

You ARE an individual. You can be nothing else.

Gay Parents Fight Valiantly to Protect Children From Gay Culture

Over the weekend, the New York Times published one of the most frustrating, yell-at-the-screen articles I've read in a long time. The piece, cheekily headlined "Chelsea's Risqu? Businesses," explored an ongoing skirmish in Chelsea, a Manhattan neighborhood that used to be edgy and largely gay but that's now mainly blanketed in the boringness of gentrification. The fact that no one actually thinks of 2015 Chelsea as particularly seedy, in a gay sense or otherwise, makes the battle?which apparently has sanctimonious gay parents trying to drive out gay porn/novelty shop owners in the name of the CHILDREN?all the more exasperating. But, as I explored in my recent long-form piece on the history and future of gay culture, the phenomenon of gay people attacking traditionally gay spaces and practices in the name of respectability is, sadly, nothing new. Indeed, it's been the main mechanism by which much of the mainstream advocate class has tried to cajole "equality" from straight people in the wake of the first AIDS crisis.

I know. I could never imagine a straight person saying "I AM SO PISSED THAT THOSE STRAIGHT PARENTS DON'T LIKE HAVING A SEX SHOP NEXT DOOR! Do they not even care about straight sex culture?"

I think we will never have true equality until people who allegedly 'support' gay people stop seeing gay people as 90% penis and acknowledge that they actually, you know, have lives outside of leather bars. These gay people have children and in their role as parents they're behaving exactly like straight parents would. That's what equality looks like.

Of course, the sex shops have just as much of a right to be there, so in that regard the parents can go fuck themselves. It's just understandable that they wouldn't like the sex shops.

        1. Hey Nikki!   10 years ago

I find it amazing that there's this bizarre alliance between the left and Islam, which is a much more radically anti-gay religion than Christianity, but apparently the leftists can't handle a random Christian even talking on campus.

      1. Tonio   10 years ago

        ^This

      2. Tonio   10 years ago

More on this: It's not an actual alliance, which implies a relationship of equals. The left hates all things white, western and Christian. Therefore the enemy of their enemy is their friends. Islam is also, in the left's view, a brown peoples' religion so by supporting that they are supporting oppressed brown people against colonialism and its legacy.

        1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

Which is also funny because Islam is among the most colonialist forces in world history. It started in Medina and spread to Mecca through military conquest and then proceeded to spread by conquering the whole Middle East, North Africa, Spain, invading France, conquering India, invading and conquering portions of Central Asia, besieging Vienna, conquering parts of Eastern Europe, etc.

Islam's imperial holdings were eventually eclipsed by those of Europe because Islamic powers fell behind European powers in the 1700s. Europe therefore was a successful colonialist center of power more recently than the Islamic world, but Islam had a 1000 year head start.

White colonialism is evil, because slavery, I guess. Oh, and white privilege.

Brown colonialism is okay. They'll probably get over it one day, maybe.

That's why Israel is evil. They're white, for the most part. All of those Islamic countries engaged in the same thing and killing each other in the streets is more pure or something.

Man goes to court with stuffed owl as his lawyer

Aspen, Colorado, man Charles Abbott was in court accused of violating a protection order involving his former roommate, Michael Stranahan. Abbott was alleged to have entered Mr Stranahan's room while he was out of town and retrieved some belongings.

Taking his seat in court on Tuesday, Abbott sat a fuzzy horned owl on the defence table with him, telling the court its name was Solomon and it would be representing him in court, the Aspen Times reports.

25 of the cleverest submissions in B.C. Ferries' naming contest

The ferry naming contest began Tuesday afternoon when B.C. Ferries announced the award of $500 to whoever could come up with the best names for three Intermediate Class ferries which will be added to the company fleet. But the ensuing results were expectantly not what B.C. Ferries had in mind.

Taking the opportunity to deliver criticism to the company, customers sunk the contest under a tidal wave of hilarious and unlikely names, poking fun at fare increases, corporate greed and the B.C. government. While many of the names give an entertaining read, they won't be considered in the contest due to somewhat strict naming criteria.

Cartwheeling Spider, Corpse-Hoarding Wasp Among Bizarre New Species

Some 18,000 species were newly named and identified last year ? a tiny fraction of the estimated 10 million or so species yet to be discovered on Earth. (Scientists have identified and described about 2 million species thus far.) To draw attention to the planet's unexplored biodiversity, scientists at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry's International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) picked just 10 of the 18,000 species to highlight.

Among them is the creepy "bone house wasp," Deuteragenia ossarium. Females of this species create nursery chambers for their eggs in hollow plant stems, stocking each chamber with a dead spider so the young have sustenance upon hatching. Then, in a truly bizarre twist, the wasp moms build a final antechamber to their nests, filling it with ant corpses. Researchers suspect the dead ants give off scents that keep predators away from the vulnerable wasp hatchlings.

Why Greece's Syriza party is not sticking to the script on an IMF deal

Privately, those within the ruling far-left party Syriza who were once confident of reaching a compromise with lenders, are now alarmed. Euro exit plans drawn up by the far left of the party are being studied seriously by those previously dismissive of them; articles contemplating a debt default have begun to appear in the party's daily paper Avgi.

In the script according to the eurozone, the expected ending is: Syriza splits; finance minister Varoufakis makes good his pledge not to sign a surrender and resigns. A government of the centre-left forms, with Alexis Tsipras now allied to the centrist Potami party and with tacit support from a liberal wing of the New Democracy party. Debt relief happens, but on the terms dictated by the lenders, and Syriza survives to complete its mutation into a centre-left social democratic party.

However, there are some who are not sticking to that script.

New Luxury Rental Projects Add to Rent Squeeze

Of 370,000 multifamily rental units completed from 2012 to 2014 in 54 U.S. metropolitan areas, 82% were in the luxury category, according to CoStar Group Inc., a real-estate research firm. The firm defines luxury buildings as those that command rents in the top 20% of the market. In some places, including Denver, Tampa, Baltimore and Phoenix, virtually all new apartment construction has been targeted to high-end renters. In Atlanta, about 95% of new apartments have been in the luxury category.

"I don't believe there ever has been a time where we have produced so much luxury rental housing," said Susan Wachter, professor of real estate at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While these new buildings are priced for the affluent, many middle-class and young workers are straining to rent the units, in part because they have few others choices.

    1. Just a thought not a sermon   10 years ago

I thought there was something of a housing pipeline. That is, a new apartment building starts out as luxury housing, and in 15 years the styles of carpeting, fixtures, etc., is out of date and the price comes down to be upper middle class housing. After 30 years it's for the middle class, and by 50 years the working class moves in. Doesn't this just mean there's a ton of middle class housing coming down the pike in a couple decades?

      1. Auric Demonocles   10 years ago

It still helps the middle class now, as at least it takes some of the competition for more affordable apartments from richer folks out of the market.

      2. Rhywun   10 years ago

In NYC the rents rise toward infinity no matter how old the building gets. That is why there is no middle class left.

    2. tarran   10 years ago

I wonder if this is the product of high regulatory hurdles?

Bernie Sanders is Hillary's leftward advance man

The Vermont socialist running in the Democratic presidential race is currently at 7.4 percent in the RealClearPolitics average of national polls, versus Clinton's 64.2 percent. Clinton is in fact moving leftward on issues like immigration, gay marriage, inequality and more, but it's not because she's feeling the heat from a little-known competitor.

Still, Sanders is staking out a role as the forward scout of the Democratic Left, going public with wish list plans to make the federal government even more massive, even more expensive, and even more intrusive. In the absence of Elizabeth Warren, who many of the most progressive Democrats would have preferred, Sanders is broadening the conversation in what is sometimes called the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.

Islamic State fighters overrun Iraqi govt lines east of Ramadi

"The situation is very critical now after Daesh (IS) fighters managed to overrun our defensive line in Husaiba," Police major Khalid al-Fahdawi said.

"We have retreated to the eastern part of the area and we're waiting for more reinforcements and air force strikes to stop the Daesh advance."

Ramadi fell to the insurgents on Sunday in the most significant setback for Iraqi security forces in nearly a year.

The IS advance has exposed the shortcomings of Iraq's army and the limitations of U.S. air strikes.

Rate hikes expose shaky foundation of Obamacare

Though supporters of President Obama's healthcare program tout its success in providing insurance to millions of Americans, recent rate filings from large insurers have revealed that the law is built on a shaky foundation.

In recent weeks, large insurers selling coverage through Obamacare have proposed massive rate increases for 2016 ? even exceeding 40 percent ? because they haven't been able to sign up enough young and healthy customers.

This is an ominous sign for the future of Obamacare, because two federal programs that were supposed to act as training wheels for insurers in the early years of Obamacare by absorbing excess risk are set to expire after 2016. If insurers don't do a better job of attracting a healthier risk pool, 2017 promises to be a rocky year for insurance markets, regardless of which party is in control of the White House.

White people, take responsibility for your Waco thugs: Black Americans are tired of being the country's conscience

Which makes this kind of piece?this one, right here, the one I'm writing?useless, to some degree. Or maybe "useless" is too heavy of a word. "Ineffective," perhaps? There is this echo chamber, or cipher, in which the unprivileged?me?is supposed to speak to the privileged, the veritable masters of the universe, and point out the flaws, the unfairness and indignities, separating the two groups. It has become the job of the victim to expose racism, then lead a conversation on it and really, one has to wonder?to what end? More than 100 white men?including the few men of color, displayed prominently on a couple of news websites?brandished weapons, shot at each other in a public restaurant, left nine of each other dead, and ? what should be said?

How do I make you give up your privilege to see the disgusting inequity in news coverage, how biker thugs become "gangs," then "clubs," despite being listed as organized crime organizations? Why should I, or anyone like me, lead this discussion?

The incident happened my junior year at Columbia, when Paul followed me upstairs at a party, came into a room with me uninvited, closed the door behind us, and grabbed me. I politely said, "Hey, no, come on, let's go back downstairs." He didn't listen. He held me close to him as I said no, and continued to pull me against him. I pushed him off and left the room quickly. I told a few friends and my boyfriend at the time how creepy and weird it was. I tried to find excuses for his behavior. 1. lap83   10 years ago

What makes me think it isn't true is that I've known victims of actual assault and they're very reticent to talk about it because they don't like reliving it and there's also a feeling of wanting to hide. When they finally do talk about it, they usually have moved past it and so then there's even less reason to tell people. So they maybe tell one person and then move on with their life. Whereas the typical Jezebel "victim" tells everyone who will listen and doesn't stop talking about it for years and each time they tell it they act like the experience is just as fresh as the day after it happened. It's just not realistic.

Anti-Gun Democrat Shoots at Girlfriend's Car

One thing we've noticed about supporters of gun control is that they tend project their own temper/impulse control/mental health shortcomings onto others. That is, they know that they don't have the temperament to avoid using firearms when angry, and since they can't control themselves, they assume everyone else has the same deficiencies.

It seems like one of those anti-gun Democrats in Detroit proved his own inability to control his temper early Sunday morning, as he blasted away with a shotgun to his girlfriend's car over what should have been a simple domestic argument:

Sources told Local 4 state Sen. Virgil Smith, who represents the fourth district, fired several shots into the woman's car.

I've been saying that for years. Progressives are emotional creatures without the capacity for rational thought except to rationalize their emotions. They are incapable of controlling their emotions and assume that everyone else is the same way.

Breaking: Huffington Post article makes stupid claim.

"New Grads Can't Really Afford To Live Anywhere, Report Finds

As experts at Trulia found, new grads can't really afford to live anywhere among the country's 25 largest rental markets. While the median annual income for new grads ranges from about $16,000 to about $41,000 in these cities, the income needed to afford median rent is two to three times that -- assuming grads don't want to spend more than 31 percent of their income on rent."

So it's not that they can't live anywhere, it's that the average grad can't afford the 25 largest rental markets. Well why can't you live outside one of the top 25 largest rental markets, you ask? What, and commute from the suburbs like a FUCKING PEASANT.

    1. Injun, as in from India   10 years ago

New grads who chose useful majors instead of grievance studies don't have a problem living where they want, apparently.

Most 22 year olds who have life and work experience would know that already.

    2. Hey Nikki!   10 years ago

And besides, in those markets it's considered normal to spend more than 31% of income on rent. 1/3 is the rule of thumb for a place like NYC.

    1. Scruffy Nerfherder   10 years ago

I think the complaint about 50 Shades of Oatmeal is valid. Pre-schoolers aren't going to get it. It's in there just so the writers can feel good about making an adult joke.

The adult commercials being shown during kid's shows is not really anything new. It's just why my kids don't get to watch television (Netflix Kids is great). That and I don't need to be bombarded with an endless list of what they want because they just saw it on TV.

Since my kids are at the Sesame Street age, we watch a great deal of it in our house. I have noticed a significant dumbing down of the content compared to the seasons from the late 1960s - late 1970s. There are a few episodes from recent seasons that make me positively apoplectic because they improperly pluralize Latin suffixes - teaching the children rhombuses, octopuses, forums, and hippopotamuses. I am reminded that when my grandfather graduated university, during the interwar period, he had a working knowledge (if not quite fluency) of Greek and Latin; this, to be a chartered accountant.

  41. Coeus   10 years ago

Apparently, AgileCyborg is pitching a new show on craigslist.

Now the key here is that I've determined the way to do this kind of show is kind of like you just have to build it and they will come like in Field of Dreams as in I believe that you need Lex Luthor actually in the show and Lex is Rupert Murdoch who is this really high status guy in New York City and we can't waste time actually trying to contact Rupert Murdoch's people to ask them if he wants to be in the show, we just have to create the show and put Rupert in the basic show's mythology as the real Lex Luthor and that will cause him to show up in the actual show rather than the old fashioned way of asking him if he wants to be in the show because that isn't the way we do things with this kind of thing.

Rupert Murdoch is not a guy that you can call him up and ask him if he wants to be in a reality show, you just have to figure out that he's the real Lex Luthor and that News Corps is LexCorps and figure out who Superman is and then just do the show as a Real Superman Reality Show and this will cause Rupert Murdoch to appear in the show as the real Lex Luthor, like I believe Rupert will actually show up and be a main figure in the show but we can't worry about getting his confirmation in a real way before the show is already being made.

    1. Coeus   10 years ago

Now it's important for my personal assistant to understand who I am that I am able to figure this stuff out and do this: I actually developed the ability to figure out who the real characters are in real life after I made the discovery that I myself am a real version of a fictional character and that's that I am actually the real Harry Potter. I basically one day just figured out that Harry Potter was a fictional version of me and that Hogwart's was a fictional version of my old boarding school Phillips Exeter Academy when I realized all the signs were there: like I have an actual lightning scar on my forehead that's the same as Harry Potter's lightning scar in the book which I got under mysterious circumstances and all the characters in Harry Potter are real people from Phillips Exeter such as the fact my old dorm head Townley Chisholm who was real uptight and always busting me for everything is the real Severus Snape and then the school's current principal Thomas Hassan is actually the real Albus Dumbledore and Mr. Chisholm and Principal Hassan really are just the real life versions of Severus Snape and Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter because Phillips Exeter is actually the real life Hogwart's.

      1. Coeus   10 years ago

        and the libertarian connection:

And sometimes characters are more than one person because they have multiple mythic portrayals, so with Ivanka Trump who is Volcana in Superman she's also the main character of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged because Ivanka Trump is actually the real Dagny Taggart, so if you have someone who's a major figure like Ivanka who's Volcana they will often have more than one mythic form and in Ivanka's case she's both Volcana in Superman and also the main character of Atlas Shrugged as Dagny Taggart and The Trump Organization is actually the real Taggart Transcontinental. So in Atlas Shrugged Taggart Transcontinental is a transcontinental railroad and in real life it's The Trump Organization which is a transcontinental real estate development company which is a real life version of Taggart Transcontinental and Ivanka is a Vice President at The Trump Organization just like how Dagny Taggart is a Vice President at her family's Taggart Transcontinental business in Atlas Shrugged. And then there's just the whole Superman tie-in where Dagny is also Volcana and she runs with Wendi Murdoch who's Mercy Graves and Rupert who's Lex Luthor so it all comes together where Atlas Shrugged now has a cross character tie-in to The DC Universe and then Dagny is marred to the real Citizen Kane who's Jared Kushner so Citizen Kane, Atlas Shrugged, and Superman are all connected in real life.

    [...]
Critics say, however, that other giant state corporations created during Putin's 15-year rule, as part of his efforts to concentrate lucrative economic assets in state hands, have not exactly been success stories. They say these state conglomerates suffer from mismanagement and inefficiency and are dogged by corruption."
