U.S.-China Tensions in South China Sea, Grand Jury Indicts Baltimore Cops in Death of Freddie Gray, Octopus Skin Can See: A.M. Links
The Pentagon is challenging the building of islands by China on the reefs of the South China Sea, a disputed area.- A grand jury indicted the six Baltimore police officers in whose custody Freddie Gray suffered a fatal spinal injury on most of the charges the prosecutor was seeking—but Marilyn Mosby dropped charges of "false imprisonment," based on the legality of the knife police said they found in Gray's possession. In the meantime, protests followed the shooting of two unarmed black men in Olympia, Washington accused of shoplifting beer—they survived, and the investigation into the shooting was handed over to an outside Critical Incident Team.
- The city of Charlotte, North Carolina, settled a lawsuit filed by the mother of Jonathan Ferrell, fatally shot by a police officer in 2013 while seeking assistance after a car accident, for $2.25 million, and says the payment is not an admission of guilt.
- The president of the Boy Scouts of America called on the organization to lift its ban on gay leaders.
- The pipeline that ruptured along the coast of California near Santa Barbara was operating at about two-thirds capacity.
- A three year expedition around the world by the Tara Oceans Consortium to collect genetic information from plankton uncovered thousands of new viruses living in the ocean. Researchers from the University of California in Santa Barbara, meanwhile, have confirmed some species of octopus can see with their skin.

I say we boycott Hit & Run until they have reliable evening commenting. WHO’S WITH ME?
I say the boycott should be until Warty gets his h/t for the Olympia story!
Piss off with that.
What is evening commenting? Is that like Reddit?
It’s where Jesse goes to “groom” young men.
Hello.
“…Mass civil disobedience as a new stage of struggle can transmute the deep rage of the ghetto into a constructive and creative force. To dislocate the functioning of a city without destroying it can be more effective than a riot because it can be longer lasting, costly to the larger society but not wantonly destructive. Finally, it is a device of social action that is more difficult for the government to quell by superior force.
The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis but it must be followed by a sense of futility.”

I can’t believe I got in to the game last night – club level seats, second row at that…and was treated to one of the more boring hockey games this year.
I think Coach Q is concussed – breaking up a line that was actually generating chances to put in Turn Over Man (Versteeg) and The Weakest Player in the NHL (Nordstrom). The Ghost of Kimmo Timonen needs to be released from its Earthly bounds too.
They still might be able to get their act together, but an, that was uninspiring.
At least my buddy from Afghanistan got to be on the ice for the Anthem.
That was awesome by the way. My wife always comes to listen to that and then leaves.
Anaheim are good. Scary good. To push Chicago like that is impressive.

I hope at least their insurance rates go up.
Oh yes…if they are not “self-insured” (ie. just tap the tax payers)

Saw you mention you had tickets to last night’s game. Bummer they lost.
Corey Perry and Henrik Lundqvist are on pace for the Conn Smythe at the moment.
Not if Tampon Bay make the finals.
True.
Then it’s Tyler Johnson – hands down.
Boy, has he been a pleasant surprise. That line is scary.

49 Former NASA Scientists Send A Letter Disputing Climate Change
Select excerpts from the letter:
“The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA’s history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements.”
“We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated.”
“We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject.”
Do we really need NASA? Don’t we have multiple private companies who can get into space now? Maybe NASA should get out of the way and let those companies do their things.
Of course we need NASA! Name another government organization so essential to Muslim outreach!
The Army?
Er….yeah.
No… pigs… in… space!
Consensus!
‘Tony’ will be along any minute now to tell us how these are not ‘real’ experts.
They aren’t Muslims.
The future does not belong to those that slander the Prophet, or deny CAGW!
CAGH PBUH?
The future belongs to the meek, who will inherit it.
That’s nice, innit? I’m glad they’re getting something because they had a hell of a time.

“The meek do inherit the earth, but they tend to inherit very small plots, about six feet by three.” (Robert A. Heinlein)
Shut up, Big Nose.
What? “Blessed are the cheese makers”?
YES THEY ARE!
Well, obviously it’s not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products
+3 percent of NASA scientists
Sure it ain’t 8%?
The IRS needs to check into these guys.
NASA won’t give up on CC. They’ve been milking that grant cow for years.
You’d think it would be better to say there is no consensus, that it needs more research. They could at least give deniers some reason to vote for more funding.
Heck, that’s all politicians really want, some reason to do what comes naturally to bureaucrats. And there’s NASA, taking sides and refusing to play along.
Clearly there is a consensus and everyone knows that is what science is all about. It’s settled.
57) Last summer I was in Nebraska for a family reunion. Out driving with my uncle through the endless corn fields, he pointed out how depopulated the area is now, compared to a century ago when each quarter-mile lot (i.e., 40 acres) had a family, and often those families had 8-10 kids. Then he said how we romanticize those times as peaceful and low crime, but he thinks there was all kinds of shit that went down that we don’t remember. For one thing, there were lots of traveling salesmen and wandering preachers and so forth who could commit crimes and leave without a trace. Say an itinerant worker came to your area, and you hired him on for a season. Your sixteen-year-old daughter is spending a lot of time with him, and one day they both up and disappear, and the family never hears from her again. Folks then would have said they ran away together to get married. Well, probably, but a lot of the time it was something more nefarious. The parents didn’t have time to investigate?they had a farm to run, they had 8 other kids, and anyway she was 16 and practically an adult. As for law enforcement, at best you had only a sheriff and a deputy, and teen-agers leave home all the time, so unless there’s specific evidence of a crime they weren’t going to look into it. If this itinerant worker had fled to another state there was basically no chance he would be caught for any sort of crime. I think my uncle was probably right?this sort of thing must have happened all the time.
Ban farms!!!

Well, family farms pretty much have been banned by the inheritance tax.
Didn’t you post this one already?
No, see, this is #57, and that’s the most recent number.

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE A NUMBERING SYSTEM, SERMON, IF NOT TO AVOID FUCK-UPS LIKE THIS?!?!?!?

Thanks, Monty. That numbering system is obnoxious, and apparently worthless.

Sorry, no, luck is additive, not multiplicative. Two negatives means even more negative.

So the linguistics professor tells his class “In languages such as English, a double negative becomes a positive. In languages like Russian, a double negative remains negative. But in no language does a double positive become a negative.”

Oh I believe it. You were more likely to have horrible things happen to you back then, but like today, it was often because of your own dumb decisions. People were just a lot more likely to be lame you for your own idiocy back then.
There are a few people at work who I would like to “be lame” for their own idiocy…
Something is going on here, but I’d rather eat breakfast than solve a mystery.
Plus it was much easier for a person to change their identity, with less ability of law enforcement to track them. Some states still didn’t have picture ID until the 70s. States didn’t share information about people except in certain extreme situations, etc. etc.
My father and mother and all my extended family are from western Nebraska. My dad said that every winter you could count on some guy to go nuts with cabin fever and blow his whole family away with a shotgun.
Former UN Lead Author: Global Warming Caused By ‘Natural Variations’ In Climate
Global temperature change observed over the last hundred years or so is well within the natural variability of the last 8,000 years, according to a new paper by a former Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) lead author.
Dr. Philip Lloyd, a South Africa-based physicist and climate researcher, examined ice core-based temperature data going back 8,000 years to gain perspective on the magnitude of global temperature changes over the 20th Century.
What Lloyd found was that the standard deviation of the temperature over the last 8,000 years was about 0.98 degrees Celsius? higher than the 0.85 degrees climate scientists say the world has warmed over the last century….
The science is settled!

Nice. And it’s going to be pretty embarrassing as more and more credentialed atmospheric scientists (etc) get added to it. I wonder when they’ll stop calling attention to that.
You’re wrong. Hobby-horse leftists love nothing better than axing one of their own as a denier/apologist/stooge for the Kochs/wrecker/Kulak/Trotskyist/etc. Putting together a list of heretics was only ever about wielding the truncheon, anyway. What good is it if you don’t get to bust open someone’s head on occasion?
You know. If this actually blows up, I might have the opportunity to convert someone. My family has been moving further and further left because they trust that any policy based in “science” should be enacted (notice the quotes). If the tides actually change, I might be able to convince them that tearing up the economy with mass regulations on a shoddy studies say so could possibly not be the best idea.
any policy based in “science” should be enacted
They would have made great communists
Oh trust me I know. They used to be socons. Full on let my husband take care of me and follow the rules of the church. Then that bit ’em in the ass, when it turns out letting someone rule your life can have bad consequences. I’m not sure if they’ve substituted in the state for the old group of caretakers or if they are just trying to get as far away from their old ideology as possible.
Krugbe!!!
BUSTED: Paul Krugman removed 20 years of data from a chart to show a correlation that wasn’t really there
…The period in the early 1960’s was removed, and so was the period from 2000 on. In other words, out of a 55-year time period, Dr. Krugman decided to remove 20 years’ worth of data. For those keeping track, that’s removing almost 40% of an entire data set just because the data didn’t fit the narrative. And when you add those years back you get a result that shows a very weak correlation…
Oh shut up, JL. Liberals would never do something intellectually dishonest to push their own agendas!
I think the reasoning is more like… something that pushes the liberal agenda could never be intellectually dishonest
“Reality has a liberal bias, and when we don’t see it in our data we know to correct it.”
Krugabe? Bending data to make his own point? YOU LIE!
A square peg WILL fit into a round hole as long as you remove the square parts.
This sounds familiar…
The conscience of a liberal.
Apparently.
I predict crickets from the NYT commenters
NYT commenters are boring. Nothing worse than educated (and in some cases well-read, articulate) people with horrible comments.
That’s amazing. It’s incredible because both the 60’s period and the early 2000 period show a massive divergence that completely contradicts Krugman’s argument. So all he really has is a 30 year period where the funds rate and the housing starts linked up. So since he only has one connected 30 year time frame where this was the case, how does he know that that particular 30 year time frame wasn’t a random outlier and that the 60’s and 2000s situation isn’t the actual natural order of things?
This is one reason economics kind of sucks. We actually have a very small amount of data because we’ve only been reliably collecting this kind of information for like 70 years. An outlier period can therefore heavily skew the information because of how relatively small our dataset is.
They don’t call it “the Dismal Science” for naught.
Here’s a paragraph from Krugabe’s column today expressing his displeasure with the Obama Admin’s handling of TPP. The last sentence is a doozy considering the source:
But other reasonable, well-intentioned people have serious questions about what’s going on. And I would have expected a good-faith effort to answer those questions. Unfortunately, that’s not at all what has been happening. Instead, the selling of the 12-nation Pacific Rim pact has the feel of a snow job. Officials have evaded the main concerns about the content of a potential deal; they’ve belittled and dismissed the critics; and they’ve made blithe assurances that turn out not to be true.”
TPP? Yeah, you know me…

7 ideas completely lost on people who are ‘fiscally conservative but socially liberal’
Trigger Warning: Salon/Alternet
So, not giving other people your money is a human rights abuse. I’ll have to remember that.
Soros is abusing me by not cutting me a large check. Personally. As are all rich celebs.
FIFY – don’t forget “progressive” taxation.
So, not giving voting for the government to give other people your someone else’s money is a human rights abuse. I’ll have to remember that.
Not giving is taking, and not taking is giving.
Yes, JATNAS, according to proggies it is. Because, remember, you did’t earn that, you didn’t build that, and you’re living on land stolen from Native Americans and much of this country’s infrastructure was created using slave labor. /standard prog talking points.
Indeed, you can’t separate fiscal issues from social issues. Look at Salon’s examples:
1: Poverty, and the cycle of poverty. Broken families make poverty worse. You can have poor, intact families, as in the depression where families were more cohesive than today, so broken families aren’t the *sole* cause, but by the same token this indicates that poverty isn’t the *cause* of broken families.
2: Domestic violence, workplace harassment, and other abuse. – If you’re interested in avoiding domestic violence, it’s better to have a husband/spouse than a live-in lover – the latter are more likely to be abusers.
3: Disenfranchisement. Telling voters that they cannot decide policy matters, which will instead be decided by federal courts and regulatory agencies, *is* disenfranchisement.
4: Racist policing. Race-baiting (a cultural issue) distracts attention from the abuses of police culture – not that there’s never police racism, it’s just a broader issue.
5: Drug policy and prison policy. – Yeah, privatization is the only prison policy which gives people an incentive to perpetuate the prison system.
6: Deregulation. With a regulatory state, it’s easier for the govt to break up traditional, time-tested institutions (like the family).
7: “Free” trade. – A culture of work, flexibility and deferred gratification is the best way to deal with unstoppable globalization.
Even if the people supporting these policies don’t intend this, the policies are racist, sexist, classist (obviously), ableist, homophobic, transphobic, and otherwise socially retrograde.
That’s some mighty fine prog-jection you found.
Yeah. There’s nothing more hateful than not giving special treatment to certain groups of people. I mean, treating them like they’re equals? That can only be explained by hatred. Tolerant people understand that certain people are inferior and in need of special policies to even the playing field. Anything else is bigotry.
I read that in Major Payne’s voice.
That is how I read everything here.
These policies perpetuate human rights abuses.
Not giving is abusing
I hate the phrase too. I am fiscally libertarian and socially libertarian.

FIFY
Nice.
Well they had to attack the standpoint. They’ve been bleeding recruits to people understanding that your opinion on the gays has nothing to do with your opinion on the budget.
The whole liberal/conservative divide is a canard anyway. In reality, you’re somewhere on the spectrum between authoritarian and libertarian, and distinctions within either category don’t matter so much.
In reality, you’re somewhere on the spectrum between collectivist and individualist. Authoritarianism is a form of collectivism, libertarianism is a form of individualism.
When seen thusly, it quickly becomes apparent that there is a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’ way to look at things.
You ARE an individual. You can be nothing else.
Anything ‘on the spectrum’ that tends towards collectivism is wrong.

Gay Parents Fight Valiantly to Protect Children From Gay Culture
No one stays on the plantation anymore.
Hell’s Kitchen is the new Chelsea. Spanish Harlem is next.
My brother lived in Spanish Harlem while he went to Columbia in the 1970’s. His appartment was robbed about every six months.
Except unlike those other two, Spanish Harlem is full of projects. Thank god I’m past the age where I give a shit cuz no way would I live there.
Why are gay people supposed to be defined by their sexuality?
It wouldn’t be news if it was “parents trying to drive out porn/novelty shop in the name of the CHILDREN”
Stuff like that is local news all the time…
I know. I could never imagine a straight person saying “I AM SO PISSED THAT THOSE STRAIGHT PARENTS DON’T LIKE HAVING A SEX SHOP NEXT DOOR! Do they not even care about straight sex culture?”
I think we will never have true equality until people who allegedly ‘support’ gay people stop seeing gay people as 90% penis and acknowledge that they actually, you know, have lives outside of leather bars. These gay people have children and in their role as parents they’re behaving exactly like straight parents would. That’s what equality looks like.
Of course, the sex shops have just as much of a right to be there, so in that regard the parents can go fuck themselves. It’s just understandable that they wouldn’t like the sex shops.
Nicole, let’s just say that I don’t like parents whining about this stuff either, but that neither of us represent normal Americans.
No, but we are common enough that stuff like that is local news all the time. Every sexytimes business ever has had annoying parents try to shut it down, and it gets reported on a lot.
Stop pressing your face against their bedroom windows, “Ms. Candy”.
I think we will never have true equality until people who allegedly ‘support’ gay people stop seeing gay people as 90% penis and acknowledge that they actually, you know, have lives outside of leather bars.
Gay males are 1-2% of the population- and are still 40% of all new HIV infections 30 fucking years after we learned the parameters.
If you are less able to control yourself than the average heroin junkie, you might just be retarded- or 90% penis…
Chelsea was kind of a rundown section of town. Teh gayz started to move in and make it their own. Better restaurants and shops followed. This attracted monied, straight NYers – boom! – gentrified.
The cycle repeats itself. If I had the cash I’d buy a building in Spanish Harlem.
So gays have excluded themselves from their definition of gentrifiers?
No, but when the first gays arrived, it wasn’t gentrified. I mean, early gentrifiers don’t actually live in gentrified places. They live in shitholes.
Gentrifying Urban Commandos – I saw them in action in Humboldt Park over the course of the late 1990s-mid 2000s. Young couple, no gun, but a big dog….fix up a house, sell it, move on. Next wave stays and where there was Latin King graffiti, there is now a doggie day spa.
That can’t be true, LH. Why, I am regularly assured on here that the only reason gay people have or adopt kids is to create the next generation of gay people.
Thank you Tonio, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to post this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCws7hkH02s

Christians dis-invited from debate because people’s feelings might get hurt
The letter continued with a list of grievances, starting with the assertion that some ideas are “harmful, and at a liberal educational institution, injurious ideas are rightfully criticized and not given an unquestioned platform to be presented. A different mechanism of presentation is required if ideas are deemed potentially harmful.”
Debates should only have 1 side presented, right? That’s the only way we’ll get thought conformity intellectual discourse.
If it was a debate, wouldn’t that already mean it’s not an “unquestioned” platform?
I find it amazing that there’s this bizarre alliance between the left and Islam, which is a much more radically anti-gay religion than Christianity, but apparently the leftists can’t handle a random Christian even talking on campus.
Kudos to Michael Shermer, who’s very anti-religious, for defending this guy.
^This
More on this: It’s not an actual alliance, which implies a relationship of equals. The left hates all things white, western and Christian. Therefore the enemy of their enemy is their friends. Islam is also, in the left’s view, a brown peoples’ religion so by supporting that they are supporting oppressed brown people against colonialism and its legacy.
Which is also funny because Islam is among the most colonialist forces in world history. It started in Medina and spread to Mecca through military conquest and then proceeded to spread by conquering the whole Middle East, North Africa, Spain, invading France, conquering India, invading and conquering portions of Central Asia, besieging Vienna, conquering parts of Eastern Europe, etc.
Islam’s imperial holdings were eventually eclipsed by those of Europe because Islamic powers fell behind European powers in the 1700s. Europe therefore was a successful colonialist center of power more recently than the Islamic world, but Islam had a 1000 year head start.
A few election cycles ago I had an urge to have a t-shirt printed that read “Martel/Sobieski” in a star-spangled red, white and blue. I ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth it since it would most likely fly over the heads of the majority of people it intended to offend.
But it is okay if Islam conquers white people because of racism or something.
But southern europe threw up the Muslum colonial yoke after hundreds of years of occupation. The brief time spent in the mideast/north africa in the last century is an eyeblink.
White colonialism is evil, because slavery, I guess. Oh, and white privilege.
Brown colonialism is okay. They’ll probably get over it one day, maybe.
That’s why Israel is evil. They’re white, for the most part. All of those Islamic countries engaged in the same thing and killing each other in the streets is more pure or something.
You know. I don’t think the alliance is as strong as reporters tend to portray. Sure your coastal elite are raging hypocrites, but I think a lot of the rank and file despise muslims (in an actually bigoted way) and just keep their mouths shut for the sake of the party.
It’s not an alliance. The Western Left fawns over Muslims. The Muslims do not reciprocate. IOW, the Left are dupes.
It looks like they held the debate, but a certain student group objected after the fact and demanded the administration apologize. I don’t even see evidence that the administration *did* apologize.

The US has done lot’s of that in the past, when it was more acceptable, China is just catching up.
China figures Obama is weak, so they can get away with it; Obama wants to prove he is not weak. No way this can end badly.
China figures Obama is weak, so they can get away with it
Agree.
Obama wants to prove he is not weak
Trouble is, he is weak, and he knows it. He won’t do squat. Frankly, fine by me. Japan and Korea are plenty rich enough to start pulling their weight in that part of the world.
Yes, Restoras, yes they are. But, the constitution we basically forced on Japan after WW2 prohibits their military from being anything other than a defense force. I have no trouble with changing that, and fortunately the WW2 generation is effectively gone. However, Korea and the Phillipines (etc) would shit themselves if we even brought that up.
The Philippines might handle it OK…but you are right on about the Koreans. They would flip.
New Luxury Rental Projects Add to Rent Squeeze
I thought there was something of a housing pipeline. That is, a new apartment building starts out as luxury housing, and in 15 years the styles of carpeting, fixtures, etc., is out of date and the price comes down to be upper middle class housing. After 30 years it’s for the middle class, and by 50 years the working class moves in. Doesn’t this just mean there’s a ton of middle class housing coming down the pike in a couple decades?
It still helps the middle class now, as at least it takes some of the competition for more affordable apartments from richer folks out of the market.
In NYC the rents rise toward infinity no matter how old the building gets. That is why there is no middle class left.
I wonder if this is the product of high regulatory hurdles?
In the War Between the States, Confederate blockade runners loaded their holds with expensive luxury goods because the risks and costs associated with breaking through the Union blockade made carrying less valuable cargo unprofitable.
I wonder if a similar phenomenon is at work here?
Good analogy. The Regulatory Blockade.

Islamic State fighters overrun Iraqi govt lines east of Ramadi
Got some Iraqi army rifles to sell…never been fired, only dropped once.
I think they have been dropped once before … Baghdad bought them from France.
But they only had a decade of training and the backing of the most powerful airforce in history. How were they suppose to win?
The minute we left, the officer corps was reduced to a Chicago style patronage force. The only IA division that mostly resisted was the mainly Kurdish one…
The funds for maintenance, training and such were piggishly looted (instead of being lightly skimmed) and the things we taught them, forgotten.
I saw the 14th DIV in action in 2008. They were functional, and got the job done, beating up the JAM and the Iranians that had slipped in. Now, I am not sure they could do…anything.

White people, take responsibility for your Waco thugs: Black Americans are tired of being the country’s conscience
You get the idea that they were on their knees every night praying that something like this would happen.
Yes, but I still don’t understand the proggie fury over the media not calling a gang shootout a riot.
Because it bothers them that black people are the only ones who get accused of rioting. No, the “Battle for Seattle” doesn’t count, because….something.
I think the fury is that instead of wringing our hands about it on the news the cops just arrested them all.
Apparently, being charged with capital crimes is not enough punishment. We need to scold them!
Except for the ones the cops shot, of course. You want to really stir them up? Run the numbers on shot white “rioters” (bikers) in this incident versus shot black rioters in Ferguson or Baltimore and express that as a percentage.
It’s ridiculous. Everyone knows “thugs” are Black.
I thought Thugs were an Indian cult dedicated to the worship of Kali by strangling travellers.
Being white is an act of thuggery.

We’re also assuming even this story is true. It’s so banal that it could be, since who would lie about something this stupid, but apparently she believes it’s some sort of grotesque and horrible crime and feminists do not exactly have a sterling reputation for honesty.
What makes me think it isn’t true is that I’ve known victims of actual assault and they’re very reticent to talk about it because they don’t like reliving it and there’s also a feeling of wanting to hide. When they finally do talk about it, they usually have moved past it and so then there’s even less reason to tell people. So they maybe tell one person and then move on with their life. Whereas the typical Jezebel “victim” tells everyone who will listen and doesn’t stop talking about it for years and each time they tell it they act like the experience is just as fresh as the day after it happened. It’s just not realistic.
Delicious. Not only ALL CAPS RANTING but further highlighted in all-red type.
Oops, their links show up in red. But still…
I still wasn’t fully prepared for what came this week: endless tittering of people around me in real life and in my social feeds saying they “weren’t sure” about Emma’s choice to carry her mattress to Columbia’s graduation; the insistence that Emma’s alleged assailant Paul Nungesser had been “proven innocent” by Columbia and exonerated by the NYPD
Innocent? Innocent of what?!
Does she know what “tittering” means? Doesn’t seem like it.
She clearly didn’t attend the Columbia School of Journalism.
Something like motor-boating, right?
This is madness:
But Columbia defines “Sexual Assault?Non-Consensual Sexual Contact” as “Any intentional sexual touching, however slight, with any object without a person’s consent.”
When everything is sexual assault, then nothing is sexual assault.

So the French are going to use force. Interesting.
When I worked at a supermarket (part of a Pittsburgh-based chain), they were PROHIBITED by law from doing it. Believe me, they wanted to. The owners of the branch were massive pillars of the community and were known for their charity.
So in the US, you’re not allowed to do what the French are forcing you to do. Weird.
Breaking: Huffington Post article makes stupid claim.
“New Grads Can’t Really Afford To Live Anywhere, Report Finds
As experts at Trulia found, new grads can’t really afford to live anywhere among the country’s 25 largest rental markets. While the median annual income for new grads ranges from about $16,000 to about $41,000 in these cities, the income needed to afford median rent is two to three times that — assuming grads don’t want to spend more than 31 percent of their income on rent.”
So it’s not that they can’t live anywhere, it’s that the average grad can’t afford the 25 largest rental markets. Well why can’t you live outside one of the top 25 largest rental markets, you ask? What, and commute from the suburbs like a FUCKING PEASANT.
New grads who chose useful majors instead of grievance studies don’t have a problem living where they want, apparently.
Nice Ivy League Degree. Now if You Want a Job, Go to Code School
I am not responsible for your utter and complete lack of judgement
Something tells me she’s still going to have trouble looking for work even after the code school.
“I thought, they’ll see Dartmouth, and they’ll hire me,” Feng says. “That’s not really how it works, I found.”
Most 22 year olds who have life and work experience would know that already.
And besides, in those markets it’s considered normal to spend more than 31% of income on rent. 1/3 is the rule of thumb for a place like NYC.
To many New Yorkers if you’re living outside of NYC you might as well just not live at all.
Actually, the report says it’s probably wise to find a roommate instead, conveniently not mentioned by the Huffington Post.
Which is also what every normal person in their 20s does if they want to live in one of those markets. Uh-duh…
+1 Lincoln Park/Wrigleyville
Also note that it’s median rent, which I would guess includes house as well as apartment rentals.
31% is nothing. My first apartment ate up 60% of my gross income after the first roommate ran out and before I could get another roommate. I survived.
Yeah. In Chicago, that would mean some ludicrously expensive Lake Shore Drive penthouse is driving up the median even though no recent graduate on Earth would even be looking to rent there.
Not for nothing, but ‘median’ is only slightly impacted by those outliers.

8 Complaints to the FCC About Children’s TV
I think the complaint about 50 Shades of Oatmeal is valid. Pre-schoolers aren’t going to get it. It’s in there just so the writers can feel good about making an adult joke.
The adult commercials being shown during kid’s shows is not really anything new. It’s just why my kids don’t get to watch television (Netflix Kids is great). That and I don’t need to be bombarded with an endless list of what they want because they just saw it on TV.
You know who else snuck adult jokes into childrens’ entertainment?
Joe Murray?

+1 Spongebob Squarepants
Since my kids are at the Sesame Street age, we watch a great deal of it in our house. I have noticed a significant dumbing down of the content compared to the seasons from the late 1960s – late 1970s. There are a few episodes from recent seasons that make me positively apoplectic because they improperly pluralize Latin suffixes – teaching the children rhombuses, octopuses, forums, and hippopotamuses. I am reminded that when my grandfather graduated university, during the interwar period, he had a working knowledge (if not quite fluency) of Greek and Latin; this, to be a chartered accountant.

To avpid criticism, you cannot touch on any SJW “triggers”. The problem is each SJW has different triggers which switch on a daily basis, there is no safe path.
And in general on the War Games quote: That is not a shocking observation. That is, in fact, the point.
Putin does the same thing, expects different results:
“Failed Launches Cast Shadow Over Russian Space Program”
[…]
“A presidential bill that received preliminary approval by the lower house this week pulls all the nation’s space assets together in one giant state-controlled commercial corporation.
[…]
Critics say, however, that other giant state corporations created during Putin’s 15-year rule, as part of his efforts to concentrate lucrative economic assets in state hands, have not exactly been success stories. They say these state conglomerates suffer from mismanagement and inefficiency and are dogged by corruption.”

Regarding the campus rape epidemic, Salon seems unclear on the meaning of “free speech”:
