Classical Mythology Too Triggering for Columbia Students
Roman and Greek mythology "contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom," students say.

In Columbia University's student newspaper, four members of the school's student Multicultural Affairs Advisory Board call on professors to be more sensitive when teaching provocative or controversial material… such as the Roman classical poet Ovid.
Ovid is best known for The Metamorphoses, a 15-book narrative poem that covers more than 250 mythological stories. Written entirely in dactylic hexameter, The Metamorphoses inspired future writers from Dante to Chaucer to Shakespeare. Whether or not it's something today's students should spend time on may be up for debate, but I think most people can understand why an instructor teaching it would focus on things like the language and imagery invoked.
Not these Columbia students, however. See, some of the myths Ovid recounts involve sexual violence. Zeus' daughter Persephone (aka Prosperina), for instance, is kidnapped, raped, and taken as a bride by Hades, king of the underworld. The op-ed writers suggest this ancient Greek and Roman myth is too triggering to be taught in today's classroom:
During the week spent on Ovid's "Metamorphoses," the class was instructed to read the myths of Persephone and Daphne, both of which include vivid depictions of rape and sexual assault. As a survivor of sexual assault, the student described being triggered while reading such detailed accounts of rape throughout the work. However, the student said her professor focused on the beauty of the language and the splendor of the imagery when lecturing on the text. As a result, the student completely disengaged from the class discussion as a means of self-preservation. She did not feel safe in the class. When she approached her professor after class, the student said she was essentially dismissed, and her concerns were ignored.
Ovid's "Metamorphoses" is a fixture of Lit Hum, but like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom. These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background.
We don't know much about what happened between the student and the professor. Was there an assignment or further lectures on Persephone she wished out of? One would hope that when approached privately about such a matter, a professor would be sensitive to the student's concerns and offer alternative assignment options. But the fact that an occasional student might feel uncomfortable with certain material seems a strange reason to think no one should read and discuss it.
What's more—the hyperbolic language of trauma that's used! Sheesh. Apparently this discussion of Ovid was so threatening it was a matter of self-preservation to ignore it. If that's really true—if the mere discussion of rape causes this student to feel panicked and physically unsafe—then she needs help treating severe post-traumatic stress disorder, not a fucking trigger warning.
I say that with no judgment; being raped can obviously be traumatic enough to produce lingering psychological trauma. But that's what that level of reaction represents: psychological trauma. Which, while something professors should be sensitive to, shouldn't dictate the parameters of acceptable education for all students.
That the student physically stayed in the classroom for the discussion and talked to the professor immediately afterward, however, suggests she wasn't as struck with crippling post-traumatic terror as the op-ed makes it seem. Rather, the writers are merely engaging in the malapropism du jour, wherein words can be "violence" and challenging or uncomfortable thoughts make people "unsafe."

Those damn Romans. Can't they stay dead and not terrorize our special ones?
Always giving us the big bastone!
I have a very good friend in Rome...
Careful, anything you say about Mr. Biggus Diccus could trigger readers of these comments.
He has a wife, you know....
Incontinentia Buttoccs!
Do you find it....risible ?
DE-risible, although nowadays they call 'em "blimps."
Wisible?
More importantly, what have the Romans ever done for us, I mean besides the aquaducts?
You can't have babies! Where are you going to let the fetus gestate? In a box?
That part is hate speech, you know. It's nobody's fault that he lacks a womb, not even the Romans
She seems very fragile. I'm triggered by many people's comments on current issues important to our country. Let's take Obama's and Michelle's endless ranting about racism. They invent fictional scenarios. They are dishonest in nearly everything, but think it is OK if it works for them. Honesty is not negotiable. Take Michelle's complaint that a woman asked her to help reach something on a high grocery store shelf. You know what, I was asked that same thing two times during my life. I was happy to do it. I was pleased that I looked like someone who would be kind enough to help someone, that I did not look like a grouchy, mean person who would be offended. Guess what, Michelle Obama was offended when someone asked her for help. That says a lot about who she is. I could go on, but this is what the Obama's do. Most liberals follow suit.
The op-ed writers suggest this ancient Greek and Roman myth is too triggering to be taught in today's classroom
This op-ed writer is far to immature to be in today's classroom.
One must commend this student and so many others for drawing attention to the triggering nature of classical texts by authors like Ovid, texts that should be carefully expurgated from the canon of texts that are studied in our institutions of higher learning. Another verbal trigger that is even more harmful to the atmosphere of safety we need on our campuses is satire.
Authors like Sterne and works like the Letters from Obscure Men (appropriately banned by Pope Leo X in 1617 because of its triggering nature) should be strictly forbidden. Students should also be advised that certain form of inappropriately deadpan parody are so triggering that they are illegal in this country: hopefully a small step towards the ultimate eradication of all triggering language from our society. See the documentation of America's leading criminal satire case at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
I must, incidentally, apologize to my noble readers for the gross incompetence of my amanuensis, who wrote "certain form" instead of "certain forms," hence triggering incalculable confusion among my readers, fans and enemies alike. I have seized the keyboard from this knave and confined him to the stables for the night as we await the morning to progress with our travels.
Columbia student over hear. This whole thing is ridiculous. Read the comments on the op-ed, and you can all see many of us don't agree with this incredible fearfulness being able to dictate what the rest of us are allowed to learn.
Far from being ridiculous, our social experiments of the past several decades, particularly with the Internet, have made it clear that triggering language causes people to feel unsafe, and universities are almost the only protective zones left in the world. We must carefully eradicate and suppress any triggering texts from our campuses, especially any kind of insidiously twisted language that stirs up controversy and crosses the line from pleasant and respectful discourse to that which inflames the imagination and causes personal offense.
You young folks may not remember the good old days, but I grew up hearing right wingers ranting about how horrible it is that Americans should have to listen to Communists in their classrooms, or see Liberals and Progressives and anybody to the left of Richard Nixon on TV, and how we really shouldn't be allowing Commie professors to teach in our public colleges, and how allowing gay people to get married would Trigger the downfall of western civilization and the end of families as we know it, especially if school chilluns hear that Heather has TWO MOMMIES or learn how to use birth control in school. (Oh, wait, they're still saying the last few of those.)
Basically, y'all are in no position to be whining about feminists being too sensitive.
Indeed, we should assign more endowed professorships and department chairs to feminist educators, so we can focus on eradicating as many speech triggers as possible from our campuses. We should also have more feminist judges, who can teach our youth, if necessary, that inappropriately deadpan email mimicry "brings you a parody over the line," with trigger effects that are punishable by prison, since we do not burn emails in America. Hopefully our colleges will continue to produce prosecutors who understand that those who "twist words" to "stir up controversy" are a "menace" to academic culture and to society. My fellow Americans, be careful not to fantasize too much, work with me to suppress all triggering texts, and study the documentation of our nation's leading criminal satire case at:
http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/
P.s. lest my previous comment lead to any additional misunderstandings (again through the sloppiness of S, my fellow traveler, research assistant and scribe), it should be clarified that I am urging the appointment of radical feminists to the positions enumerated. The appointment of non-radical feminists would, unfortunately, fall far short of achieving the desired effect.
Bill, please remember to whom you are speaking. Most of us folks here, freedom loving libertarians, classical liberals (and quite a few libertines, as well), would be as irritated about throwing out "progressives" based on their beliefs from accademic conversation as we would throwing out conservatives.
Remember -- free speech actually matters here. We care about it, deeply, because of its intrinsic value and as a basic human right.
Also, remember, that reason.com, and the reason institute, is not a conservative think tank.
We believe in open borders, free trade, gay marriage (and all the Heinleinian variants you can name), freedom of speech, freedom of birth control (many many of us, though not all, and more than average in the US are pro-choice); we are anti-drug war, anti-police militarization, anti-speech codes, and anti- all forms of government coersion.
And anyway ... let's be honest ... would you really see a place that calls itself "reason" the sort of institute where conservatives hang out?
To be sure, Simon speaks a good deal of truth, as long as we understand that all discourse, including this so-called "free speech," is limited by certain basic requirements of propriety and respect for others, such that speech triggers will no longer be tolerated in the United States. This applies not only to "classical" authors such as Ovid and Petronius, Sterne and Sade, but also to the Internet rabble of our day, and in particular to those who communicate illegal pasquinades in the "names" of the noble academic dignitaries who train and protect our nation's youth in institutions like NYU and Columbia.
They had the communist part right, didn't they? McCarthy was spot on. Except for letting Cohn get into it with the Secretary of the Army over a personal beef.
*You young folks may not remember the good old days, but I grew up hearing right wingers ranting about how horrible it is that Americans should have to listen to Communists*
You old folks fell down on the job and let the commies have their say on every channel and every classroom. Look how well all of that turned out.
Progressivism is aggressively attempting to destroy people's ability to think rationally. The 'feminists' are the most militant useful idiots in this undertaking.
Students with ancestral histories of stag transformation, swan assault and shower of gold descents, should demand deity-proof safe zones and university-subsidized sacrifices of oxen, sheep, doves and white puppies to deter Olympian recidivis.
A strict ban on toga parties and ivy-chewing by feminists of an aspect displeasing to foam-footed star sparkling Aphrodite should also be enforced.
Daedalus interea, Creten longumque perosus exilium tactusque... ok, that's all of Metamorphosis I remember from 9th grade, before we got to Kafka's work of the same name...
Sorry, Suthenboy, but given the way right wingers whine when anybody suggests students read The Communist Manifesto* or Rules for Radicals or anything written by women or black people, I've got no patience for them whining about progressives or feminists whining about what they have to read.
---
* On the other hand, making anybody except economics students read Das Kapital is mean - it's long, dull, boring, full of logic flaws from the first few chapters, and a complete waste of time.
I'm late, but so are you.
Anyway, bill, you're new here, so I'll just let you know that if you're looking for a place to hyperventilate about "right-wingers" you want the National Review, two doors down the hall on your right.
Ya know, I haven't seen the buttplug wafting around here lately. (Narrows gaze at Bill)
Careful with your gaze, ODB, you may infring on some copyrghted occular degrees, there.
before we got to Kafka's work of the same name...
Rather ironic, given the Kafkatrapping your side gleefully engages in these days.
Sorry, Suthenboy, but given the way right wingers whine when anybody suggests students read The Communist Manifesto* or Rules for Radicals or anything written by women or black people, I've got no patience for them whining about progressives or feminists whining about what they have to read.
You must have the wrong site. Care to point out where anyone here has said students shouldn't read these items? Personally, I'm all for it, as it's a nice primer on how the enemy thinks.
As long as Marxist texts are presented as works of evil and represented as such in their historical context (Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot, etc.) I see no problem teaching these books. In fact, I believe it is important to learn from them, so as not to be seduced by their adherents later due to ignorance of them.
Nice job on the alt-text, even if it reinforces Rape Culture.
And alabaster is racist.
And "tory" glorifies conservatives.
Nice job on the alt-text, even if especially since it reinforces Rape Culture.
These clowns, and the entire concept of "rape culture," need to be mocked mercilessly at every turn.
Well, I'm doing my part by trying to work "Grab its motherfucking leg" into my daily conversation.
These clowns, and the entire concept of "rape culture," need to be mocked mercilessly at every turn.
The world is a dangerous and ugly place. The sooner these students learn about it, the better off they will be.
Someone(maybe the obstetrician) should have smacked the father for allowing this to happen!
No! We must wrap them in foam and sing lullabies to them.
Wasn't that sort of the point of many of those myths anyway, to learn and think and try to explain?
Yeats, the rapist frat boy of poetry.
HAWT.
damn swan...
I'll be in my bunk.
Tastes like chicken
/That's what she said.
Everyone knows Yeats was a bee-enslaver, Sug. So problematic.
So, so problematic. I've also heard that he was so white he was considered Irish by many.
His anti-communitarian impulses betray him as the shitlord he was.
And I've heard that he was heteronormative in his sexual relationships.
very troubling. concerning also
Yeats is known as "Keats" west of the Mississippi.
"Allow Thor to retort, you shapeshifting rapist
And get a taste of this Scandinavian greatness"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_xFOmYxKYw
Ugh, now I'm all triggered. Thanks, asshole.
Luckily, it wasn't an ostrich.
Half of the Social Conservatives who are criticizing feminists here would really freak out if students got taught all the sexual parts of classical Roman and Greek writing. Many of them are the same people who don't want sex education in high schools, especially if it talks about homosexuality, and would be really upset if literature class taught translations of the stuff Ovid and the other Roman poets thought was funny (and forget even mentioning Sappho or the island she was from.)
They're ok with talk about rape, but talking about people having sex for fun? That'd be the Downfall of Western Civilization As We Know It.
If you're going to be a troll, could you do it with fewer words?
Though I suspect you are actually a Tulpa sock.
the Social Conservatives who are criticizing feminists here
Bo?
I don't know any socons here. Though, if any show up, let me know, I've still got a few shells left. Turns out, if you say "vagina" loudly three times before you shoot 'em, they don't come back as quickly.
it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom
You know what the real problem is? People pretending to understand that this means something.
I don't know about that. Pointing out that she considers being raped part of her identity is quite telling.
It tells me that she's allowed that one single traumatic event to completely define her existence from now on and instead of dealing with it through counseling or whatever she's decided to insist that everyone else bend over backwards to accomodate her fragility.
It doesn't say she was raped, just that she was a survivor of sexual assault. These days that could mean someone pinched her in 7th grade... Another of the many reasons that this dumbing down of horrific crimes is, well, horrific.
Yep. I doubt she was raped, or they would have said "raped", especially since they mentioned rape and sexual assault in the previous sentence. It's like when someone says they went to a "top 20" school; you know they went to a school ranked 16-20. When a classification is made to create an implied association, the thing classified will be on the margin.
And how about, at the very least, we have a requirement where people are allowed to be triggered by the actual event. So rape can trigger the raped, but not the ass-grabbed or the "Hey there, cutie-pie"-ed. No victimhood by loose association.
I like the way another commenter put it on another site:
Slapping trigger warnings on everything has also perpetuated the wrong idea about what a trigger actually is. If something makes you angry, uncomfortable or you shed a tear you have not been triggered. You're a human being, you're supposed to experience a range of emotions fully. The term 'trigger' is meant to refer to those with PTSD, those with severe anxiety and/or survivors of various forms of abuse. It indicates an extreme reaction to certain stimulus; i.e. a panic attack/flashback/blackout caused by your brain being unable to handle the resurgence of something horrific that happened to you.
She needs to stop calling herself a 'survivor' of sexual assault. She is a 'victim' of sexual assault, nothing more.
Good point, actually. It doesn't sound like she survived being assaulted, she's still dying slowly.
It sounds to me that she isn't dying slowly or otherwise.
She is just seeking attention. Any man around her needs to get away from her. She is poised to be raped again and woe to the man in her sights when she decides she has been assaulted or raped. People like this, and like the girl who made up the UVA rape case, are dangerous weapons.
It tells me this self-involved ass-hat thinks she's the only person in the place that matters, or is trying to get an education.
Seriously, that quote, "She did not feel safe in the class." if true, means this person is completely irrational. No reasonable person could possibly be in fear of being raped in a classroom discussing classical lit. If you really need that kind of bubble around your delicate sensibilities, you need to not leave your damn house...ever.
If she stays in the classroom, she might hear words that make her uncomfortable, thus making her a victim all over again. So she needs a safe space.
With padded walls and regular doses of Thorazine.
Claiming to be a rape victim is a badge of honor among femenists today as well as social signaling among liberals.
Yeah, it's like the number of people who had a grandmother who always did the right thing, never smoked, never drank, but single and poor, was forced to work in restaurants, where she got and died of cancer (scientific proof not required). There were more anecdotal stories like this, that I'm sure if all were true cancer rates would have to be redone as we missed a few million.
Of course I'm not saying this is that... Who knows what if anything happened and nominally I think, until Leyden otherwise, one has to assume her claims are truthful...
But color me skeptical she has endured anything other than a manipulated education which has obviously brainwashed her into believing she's in constant danger.
Zeus' daughter Persephone (aka Prosperina), for instance, is kidnapped, raped, and taken as a bride by Hades, king of the underworld.
To be sure, the "rape" depicted in the famous statue by Bernini isn't rape-rape but rather the abduction of Proserpina by Hades into the underworld.
That's the other thing. "Rape" in older literature doesn't mean just forced sex. It mostly just means carrying off a woman. It hasn't had its current specific meaning for very long.
Of course, both kinds of rape do happen in ancient literature. Just like in reality. Imagine that.
So by these student's logic Morgoth literally "raped" the Silmarils when he fled Valinor.
The IRS rapes my paycheck when it carries off my Monday earnings.
Others can play at the triggering game, I suppose. Just think of all the books, lectures, etc. that conservative and libertarian students have to sit through that trigger images of totalitarian government, theft of our property, destructive of individual responsibility.
I have been toying with the idea lately of some strategy for using their idiocy against them. If demoralization is the destruction of people's ability to think rationally and defend themselves, shouldn't we be able to turn the useful idiots against themselves and their handlers?
This is a strategy that should be employed en masse.
If discussing Ancient Greek literature can be triggering to a modern SJW, discussing Marx triggers me because it invokes the millions of dead at the hand of government.
Hey, good for the professor!
These students may really go ballistic when they learn that the Greeks and Romans had slaves.
Impossible. A leading light of academia has tweeted that white Americans invented slavery.
Yeah SugarFree is right
only white european/american men ever owned slaves and they were all africans, the only race that has ever been enslaved
it is known
Besides, who would care about any of those Irish slaves?
Yeah! those privileged white slaves from britain, gaul, and the germanic tribes deserved what they got for their part in enslaving africans in the new world 1500 years later!
also, patriarchy
"Alright, we'll give some land to the niggers and the chinks, but we don't want the Irish!"
"Besides, who would care about any of those Irish slaves?"
:'(
Or the Slavs, from whose name English got the word "slave"?
Irish weren't slaves. Just a bunch of Papist drunkards too stupid to realize they could leave.
Did I cover all the bases?
"only white european/american men ever owned slaves and they were all africans, the only race that has ever been enslaved"
Don't be silly. American slave owners were just the most cruel and violent, making other slaveowners look like kindergarten teachers in comparison. /according to an African Studies major I once knew
*African American Studies
an African studies major probably knows a bit more about history
Wow, he must not have studied very much lol
the slave owners in places as close as Cuba, Jamaica, and all of south america were many many times more cruel and violent, and that is a fact
We don't need your rapesplaining around here, Joe.
"the slave owners in places as close as Cuba, Jamaica, and all of south america were many many times more cruel and violent, and that is a fact"
That fact even perpetuated slavery in North America, they thought it was their Christian duty to basically intercept them from being sent further south.
She , actually, and she assured me many times over the course of our argument of her expertise in the subject, because of her major, so I was to just defer to her judgment. Women can be blowhards too, you see. Equality!
Exactly! The professor was right on. Instead of pretending these students have legitimate concerns, they need to have their fraudulent issues dismissed and be told to drop the class if their too weak and/or immature to handle mature education.
It's not the professor or the schools' problem that students are "triggered" by reading texts that are thousands of years old in which the characters don't act like baby ass college students from 2015. The students need to learn that not everything caters to their every whim and the minority can't and shouldn't dictate to the majority what is and what is not acceptable.
if the mere discussion of rape causes this student to feel panicked and and physically unsafe?than she needs help treating severe post-traumatic stress disorder, not a fucking trigger warning.
So much this. Why were students just a few short decades ago reading such stuff in high school with no apparent distress?
Obviously because rape is way more common today.
+1 in 5

If I didn't see this kind of thing so much, I would not believe that such people could exist. Where were these kids' parents? I can't imagine creating a more worthless, self centered generation of people if I tried. It is not so much that these kids are worthless, lots of people are that and worth is a relative term anyway, it is that they are an active and malevolent influence on society. The entire country is significantly worse and less free because of these idiots' existence. And they are so far gone and have so many people making money off enabling them, I don't' see how you ever fix them.
There are many days I want to beat my boomer peers with a baseball bat.
Aren't most college students children of Gen X by now?
Sadly, yes. Most are of my generation.
You've no idea how much I absolutely HATE being associated with these people just because of my age.
Boomers: Born between 1946 and 1964
Gen X: born between early 1960's and early 1980's
Millennials: born between early 1980's and early 2000's
Not necessarily. Most likely a mix from 3 generations, but weighed heavily toward boomers. Many Gen X women postponed having children until their 30's. I'm a Gen X'er and my children are 7 and 9.
"I don't see how you ever fix them."
You don't.
"Demoralization, which takes from 15 to 50 years to demoralize a country. Why does it take so long? Because this is the time it takes to demoralize one generation of students exposed to the ideology of the enemy. You need the ideology of Marxism Leninism pumped into the soft heads of at least three generations of students without being challenged by the basic values of Americanism. The result you can see. The people who graduated in the 60's dropped out as half-baked intellectuals and are now occupying positions of power in government, civil service, mass media, and in the educational system. You are stuck with them. You cannot get rid of them. They are programmed to think and react to certain stimuli in a certain pattern. You cannot change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information, even if you prove that white is white and black is black you still cannot change their basic perception and the logical behavior. For these people the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible. "
I don't understand how you could be this stupid and not at some point get a little smarter. These idiots are like pod people.
They're trained to emote, not to think. They are constantly asked "How do you feel about this?" instead of "What do you think about this?" to the point where the latter question is interpreted to mean the former. They are trained to use the rational part of their brain not to arrive at conclusions, but to justify their emotions. It's not so much a matter of stupidity. It's just how they are trained to "think." I know. I was that way once. Then I saw the light. But it wasn't because someone showed it to me. I had to see it myself. Which really sucks, because I'd love to use my journey from Tony to sarcasmic to cure others of the emotive disease, but alas they can only do it on their own.
This is horrifyingly true. I was debating something with a progressive once, and he kept saying "I feel that this policy is-" and "I feel like that person is just-" and I pointed out that "feelings" are not legitimate arguments. He replied, "Thinking IS a feeling!"
Practically the only thing this movie got right:

Watch your thoughts for they become words, watch your words for they become actions, watch your actions for they become...habits, watch your habits for they become your character, watch your character for it becomes your destiny. What we think we become.
Nice.
Who said that?
Your mom?
My mom isn't a wordy gal. Sarcastic as sin but not too wordy.
I would guess it's that Soviet defector guy who talked about the commie indoctrination agenda.
Yuri Bezmenov. Not sure it that's who you were referring to or not.
Try pasting a piece of the quote into google. Not trying to be snarky here, but that's the easiest way to find the source of a quote.
Yes, it was Yuri Bezmenov. My apologies, I am busy but couldn't help commenting on this story. I don't multitask well.
Look him up on Youtube, he has lots of videos there and he is pure gold.
You have given me a sadz Suttenboy with all your clarity of thought.
Now I needz a trigger warning. Since I am Libertarianish in thought I will fend for myself and just consider you name to be a trigger warning in and of itself.
"Ovid's "Metamorphoses" is a fixture of Lit Hum, but like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom. These texts, wrought with histories and narratives of exclusion and oppression, can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background."
Why, they EXCLUDED" people! The nerve. I hope a poor black LGBT never has to deal with the oppression created by receiving an exposure to a classical education in that classroom. The Horror! The Horror!!
I just cannot accept that there is a significant number of people who actually have thought patterns like this. Will a few years of life experience outside the halls of academia and the bossums of mom and dad fix this ?
These people should be publicly laughed at and shamed into silence.
Oh, I think the coming financial and economic apocalypse will a) marginalize them instantly, and b) completely disabuse them of the value and tenets of their education. And if it doesn't they will starve to death, so all good.
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."
How very Kiplingian! And I mean that as a compliment.
Hey, survival of the fittest.
I'm not convinced that a lot of them aren't doing these stupid things because they can, as opposed to because they really feel that way. Just poking the administration and seeing how stupidly they can get them to react. I raised a millennial and I just can't see her or any of her peers getting upset about being microaggressed(?) or triggered or whatever. But I could easily see them acting all upset to see what kind of reactions they get.
Personally I think it's a really good idea to let liberal arts colleges become objects of ridicule in society. Maybe responsible parents will keep their kids out of them, or even better, send them to STEM schools where they can actually learn something useful.
That is because you are a philistine. There is nothing about getting a STEM education that is going to make you any more friendly to freedom or any less likely to be a fascist. In fact, all forms of fascism during the last 200 years came wrapped in the garb of science and were bought hook line and sinker by large numbers of the scientific community.
Liberal arts do matter and it is a tragedy they are being destroyed in this country.
It is a damn shame. The liberal arts are important.
I think there is probably some truth to the observation that STEM fields have more libertarians in them. But this probably has far more to do with the personality types of people attracted to those fields than with the manner of their education.
VERY MUCH THIS!!!!!
I volunteer at an IEEE affiliated non-profit, and it brings me into weekly contact with engineers building new inventions and developing new technologies. Some of the shit they work on can only be used to enable totalitarianism and is basically ripe for all sorts of misuse, and they literally don't care. They have a childishly naive notion that their developments will only ever be used on enemies abroad.
So, they're responsible for how their new technologies are used? Are gun manufacturers responsible for criminal use of guns? Are car companies responsible for hit and runs?
That feeling can be real and deep. Some of the Los Alamos atomic guys gave and/or sold secrets to the Soviets over similar feelz.
Even though I'm an engineer-MBA, I could not agree more that the liberal arts are important, and that exposure to the liberal arts in college and high school is very much worthwhile.
My son, a recent math graduate, thinks otherwise. His college experience with the liberal arts left him with the impression that they are a vast wasteland of pseudo-intellectual wankery.
That's not fair. Some of it is legitimate intellectual wankery.
But seriously. Maybe it has changed since I was in school some years ago. But at that time, there was plenty of annoying wankery going on, but you could avoid it if you found the right subjects and professors. I was a math/philosophy double major and managed to put together a philosophy program completely free of politics and out of my field found some great classes in history, classics and Spanish literature.
If the screeching I'm hearing from the feminist sphere is correct, that was because philosophy is one of the only liberal arts fields that held strong against infection by the worst of modern leftism.
Getting a STEM education simply means one is more likely to be getting one's moneys worth and less likely to be dependent on others, or the state.
It's also because, to understand social phenomena, one needs to have some understanding of statistics, which liberal arts majors rarely have.
Frankly, good quantitative reasoning is the best tool for solving most real problems; not 'communication skills' or whatever bullshit are the selling points of humanities degrees. Granted, they may be better at solving the problems they themselves create ('office politics' and such). And in my experience mathematicians have a better handle on logic than philosophers.
Liberal arts education is a nice idea and all, but it's unsalvagable in American universities. A bad liberal arts education is worse than none. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing; drink deep or taste not the Pierian spring." Don't call me a philistine.
I hope you are right about the generation in general. I don't have a whole lot of interaction with people that age anymore. But in my experience, people currently in their 20s seem to be at least as cynical and critical of silly crap like this as anyone. I can't imagine any of the people in that age group that I have worked with not totally making fun of these idiots.
Let's hope it's mostly confined to the bubble of academia. And that is passes before liberal arts education is completely fucked.
"send them to STEM schools where they can actually learn something useful."
TOOT TOOT
I am sure (or I have to believe) that a lot of them will fix themselves when they are confronted with reality. You just can't go through life like that. Unless you are a very attractive woman. And even that only gets you so far. Eventually you start to lose your looks and people realize you are psycho (yes I'm thinking of someone in particular).
I live on what is essentially a cul-de-sac, and have two dogs who are very protective of my wife. Last fall, a neighbor from a few streets over was walking her dog down my street. For whatever reason, her dog and one of my dogs don't get along. My wife, who was two months pregnant, was walking out the door when the neighbor dog saw my dog through the door and barked. My dog went full "protect momma" mode, charged out the door, jumped our gate, and got into it with neighbor dog, chasing him up the street. By the time we caught up, my dog was bleeding from several facial wounds but holding neighbor dog by the scruff of the neck, waiting for us.
Numbers were exchanged, etc. Several days later, we reached out via the phone and by another neighbor who knows the woman involved to apologize, check on her dog (who was unharmed) and to suggest that we try to introduce our dogs in a calm, controlled environment. Two weeks later we receive a message from her that she doesn't feel safe walking her dog down our street and has reported us to animal control.
Basically, if these were kids, it would've been about the same as her calling the police because her kid called my kid a name and my kid started a fight and lost. Instead of allowing us to engage with her as neighbors on a personal level and solve what is essentially her problem, she got authorities involved which, predictably, has changed nothing whatsoever.
She's got a boy in high school. That's where those kids come from.
Ovid also writes about how the god Dionysus turned King Midas into a counterfeiter. I guess that triggers anxieties in Austrian economists.
It triggers Janet Yellen.
She triggers me.
Lol. This is why I come to the comment sections.
Zeus H. Thunderclapper! Is this shit never going to go away?
Send her to the puppy room, fer fucksakes.
We sent her to the Nork puppy room instead - where Un's Uncle went.
I'll never forget the first day in my of my poli sci classes in University. The professor handed out a syllabus for each student to go over the course material. After a few minutes one student (a female) raised her hand and asked the professor what part of each book she should focus on because she was 'busy'. The professor answered, 'all of them?'
Not everyone in university is serious or should be there.
Need more information. There's student who don't want to work, but there's also professors who seem to think there class is the only one that's important so you're free to spend 40 hours a week on it.
Yes. I'm gonna go into full fiucken detail about the class.
He was demanding but not to the point he should hold the student's hand by telling her which chapter to the paragraph to focus on.
Wtf?
*whispers loudly*
Stormy never went to college, so.....
*gives knowing look*
/loud whisper.
Oh.
Sssshh in class.
Stormy went to college twice, actually.
Do over?
No, got my BS, worked for several years, then got an MS.
Your mom goes to college.
(Napoleon Dynamite reset)
In which case, don't take the class.
Oh, and I never took a poli sci class that was a serious burden. I've taken history classes that required reading a new 500 page book each week, but it's still easy reading and you're not tested on the details, just required to remember a few major themes for the essays.
I had a history professor whose tests were legendary. He would test from the book, plus from his lectures, which were only loosely tied to the book chapters. A typical test would have a bunch of multiple guess, and some fill in your guess, but the worst was the map portion. There would be something like 50 places and events marked, but not labeled. So, for instance, 22 would be an x, and on the answer sheet, next to 22, you would write "battle of the bay of marathon", a dot at 34 would be "Athens", etc. Brutal.
Sounds like my Ancient World History prof. 5 books, 40 pages of notes, 800 possible definitions - test was 1 out of class essay, 10 random definitions (out of the 800) and two short essays out of the 5 books. The word Brutal describes is to a tee. First test was the day after drop day, so if you did bad (I did) you were stuck.
I had a PoliSci major and skated through without paying much attention.
Except in stats classes. Dammit, I actually had to pay attention in those to pass with a decent grade.
They're in college. Prioritizing workload and negotiating deadlines are things adults are expected to do.
A professor can reasonably assume that you committed to the responsibilities in the syllabus when you registered for the class.
Reason has become "hot tub time machine" except we're back in 1993.
Too bad that these Columbia students were in kindergarten when John Ashcroft was the Attorney General, they could have written a nice op-ed defending Ashcroft as being ahead of his times in protecting philistines' feelings.
"....can be difficult to read and discuss as a survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background."
I LOVE how they go from objecting because rape victims feel triggered to lumping minorities and poor people in there as well, just for the fuck of it
Well, minorities and the poor are totally raped by the cis-privileged white majority, so....spot on.
ahh damn your right
i forgot to check my privilege, thanks
Trigger warning before using the wrong your/you're and there/their/they're!!!
I'm a grammar violence survivor and your critical reply just triggered me
it's self preservation
From the comments of the op-ed:
"I really, really, really distrust people who write pieces like this. As an Hispanic former student, I really don't trust people who merely invoke minority struggles as a cudgel in order to dictate what can and can't be taught in a classroom and how it can or can't be taught."
Well, that's refreshing to read.
Well at least one minority person agrees with me.
Maybe minorities should start speaking for themselves instead of letting libs and people like sharpton and michelle obama speak for them
I've been reading the comments from the article and have been rather surprised by a few, such as this one: "I've been a 1st generation Hispanic immigrant in the U.S. for most of my 36 year old life and have had to endure extremely bigoted treatment after moving to the mid-west in my 20s.
I don't need to be coddled nor protected from bigotry. I get the strength to deal with it from myself, not from other people empathizing with how I feel whenever someone says something disparaging about me because of the color of my skin or birth place.
My black, Mexican, and Jewish friends don't need the pity of anyone or the understanding of anyone to have the strength to go about my business and we don't need everyone, especially '1,000 ignorant' (you mistyped what you meant, come out and say it, "white") folk, to know how it feels to be in my shoes.
You whine about subtle racism while people who suffer overt, blatant racism like I have work around it and DEAL with it. Grow some skin and stop being translucent, exposing your weaknesses to the world by blasting it over a megaphone. If you have a problem with your ability to handle the world, that's your personal problem and it doesn't give you the right to demand everyone live their life around you and your egocentric self."
Shit, renewed faith in humanity that post did !
Can this please be an hourly public service announcement?
Pedro agrees! Trigger warnings suck. Vote Pedro!
"Who wants to eat chiminichangas every day?"
As an Hispanic former student, I really don't trust people who merely invoke minority struggles
Ummmm . . .
Leave us out of your pussy triggering RACIST bullshit. Bring on the Ovid. Rather hear that than a cop siren. Fucking candy ass retarded snowflake. You think THAT is what triggers us? /"people of color" and poor people.
Yes! My poor white trash upbringing finally gets its due recognition as the burden it has always been. Reading great gatsby in high school was triggering hell!
If you notice it's Greek mythology they're reading about. Greek = Greece = Europe = White = racist! Why aren't they reading some great literature by some African writer? Clearly cause racism!
triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom.
I'm picturing Jack Burton - "China is here? What does that even MEAN?"
"marginalizes student identities" - What do these words even MEAN, SJW?
I'm a reasonable guy. But, I've just experienced some very unreasonable things.
Great flick. Recently did a trifecta - Big Trouble and both Escapes. Hard to think of three movies that are more fun.
My sister and I (she lives in Bahston, I'm in Michigan) call whenever it's on. "It's on! Turn to x channel!"
Still mad they didn't make a "Big Trouble II" when Kurt Russell was younger - cause it totally merited a followup.
One would hope that when approached privately about such a matter, a professor would be sensitive to the student's concerns and offer alternative assignment options.
I respect you a lot ENB, but actually I would not hope that. Someone who is so deeply scarred by an experience that they can't read and discuss in an academic setting a work of literature that is thousands of years old needs to be told to focus on serious counseling, not to simply be given an alternative assignment.
Ah, I see you basically said the same thing in the next paragraph or two. I should have kept reading. Though in my defense your sympathy really triggered me.
trigger warning: nuance
=)
BURN!
Even in light of ENB's following paragraph, I still maintain that no alternative assignment is warranted. Even assuming the validity of the "triggered" person's sexual assault (an assumption that I think likely a stretch to begin with), you cannot simply bury your head in the sand and ignore all uncomfortable aspects of the human experience simply because you once claimed to have suffered from one. .
" and offer alternative assignment options."
Your alternative assignment is a 20 page report on centaurs. Have fun.
"Whether or not it's something today's students should spend time on may be up for debate, but I think most people can understand why an instructor teaching it would focus on things like the language and imagery invoked."
Actually, if the course is in any way related to this subject I don't see how there could be any debate on whether or not today's students should spend time on this. It's a foundational text of virtually all Western literature and is also a major classical text, so any class related to Western literature, Greek/Roman history, or the classics probably should consider teaching Metamorphosis.
That isn't even getting into the fact that Ovid's Metamorphoses included the story of Pygmalion which gave George Bernard Shaw the title of his play, so you could also reasonably expect that story to be taught in a course on theater or George Bernard Shaw. When you consider that Pygmalion is a major work in its own right and became the musical My Fair Lady, I don't know why anyone would even question whether or not its reasonable for 'today's students' to be studying a several thousand year old text that still serves as the basis for modern works of art.
All ancient texts would be off limits to those easily triggered. Nearly all mythology is stuffed to the brim with rape and war.
So, basically, 80% of Western canon would be too upsetting.
I wonder, do war vets ever claim triggering when reading mythology?
Only when reading "The Song of Roland"....what?
Nope....
No, because every vet I've ever known has a functioning cerebrum.
When you consider that Pygmalion is a major work in its own right and became the musical My Fair Lady
And then the show Selfie.
Metamorphoses also includes a couple of transexuals if I recall correctly. One of which is a woman who becomes a heroic warrior after turning into a man.
I'm starting to suspect that these brohahas are just a clever way for a cabal of online colleges to destroy the general brand of "College" and the specific brands of upper tier universities.
Or they've decided to destroy themselves.
Either way -"Lay on, MacDuff."
"And damned be him who first cries hold, enough!"
"And afterwards we'll both dance in the buff!"
/Fire Island Community Players "Oh, Macbeth!"
FTFY Someone should just put these fragile little snowflakes out of their misery.
BTW, it took ~20 tries to get that fucking comment to post. Fuck you reason, you're shitty assed commenting system has made me feel TRIGGERED and UNSAFE.

MY GOD WHAT AN ANTI-INTELLECTUAL
Wanted: 1 T-shirt, text "Special snowflakes, meet flamethrower"...
If enough students come to believe these things in the future, the US will be conquered by twenty-five guys swinging Nerf swords.
And Pop Tart guns. Don't forget the Pop Tart guns for ranged combat.
They'll be no match for my wooden board with a nail in it. Muahahhahaha
What about a franklinator?
Student: This reading assignment is highly offensive. My brain shut down out of self preservation just during your lecture. You can't use this material, it's too triggering.
Teacher: I'll give you the option to drop this class before I give you your first F.
Student: This reading assignment, etc.
Prof: I'm glad you approached me privately about this matter. In order to be sensitive to your concerns, I'd like to offer alternative assignment options. Those assignments would be in the basketweaving and pottery classes, after you drop this one.
I would pay to watch that, if it were ever recorded.
Boy, wait till she reads about the essential Roman origin myth: The Rape of the Sabine Women.
I'm pretty sure these people could read Rape of the Lock and they'd be so triggered by the name that they wouldn't even be able to read far enough to realize the poem is about a woman getting her hair cut.
Tell them what the actual name for canola oil is!
I'll do better than that, I'll start my own line under a unique brand name. I'll even get a celebrity spokesperson:
"Hi, I'm Ben Roethlisberger for Grand Moff Rape Oil..."
"Hi, I'm Serious, and I'm the spokesperson for Rapecorp."
But I'd bet good money she's read the entire 50 Shades of Grey series....
bingo
When did universities get re-chartered as Eloi factories?
Or as the Morlocks call them, buffets.
Four college students got sand in their vaginas. Who cares?
Wait, did someone mention a chicken cutlet?
Also, I love that these idiots say "like so many texts in the Western canon, it contains triggering and offensive material that marginalizes student identities in the classroom."
Yeah - only the Western canon. Rape and politically incorrect language and thought patterns simply did not exist in the noble artistic endeavors of indigenous peoples.
Rape, bad language, violence, love, compassion, vengeance hatred, suffering, bravery, triumph, defeat, tragedy, miracles, that is what the rest of the human race calls life. These people don't even qualify as human being anymore.
Or the latest Avenger's movie. Well, no rape-rape but mind control counts right?
How many classes at Columbia have Beloved on the reading list? All of them?
No shit. How exactly does that not serve as a trigger to any black student? Of course no black student ever making such a claim would be heard. They don't mean a word of any of this. This is about purging undesirable views and nothing more.
I think you could narrow it down to purging anything written by 'white males', though I even wonder if ancient Romans were alive today, they'd even be considered 'white'.
FTFY
The northern barbarians were barely considered human.
Yep. The word barbarian is derived from the Romans mocking of their languages. They found it guttural and inhuman to point of reminding them of sheep. Ba, ba, barbarian.
The Greeks came up with barbarian.
The Greeks came up with barbarian.
The Greeks came up with barbarian.
What you are seeing is the manifestation of intense self hatred made flesh. I suspect that the underlying core of the people who push this idiocy the most is an abiding, incredibly deep self-hatred that manifests itself in hating anything that can be identified as "where I came from". Destroy the self by destroying everything that shaped them throughout their lives.
it sounds weird but it's all I can come up with to explain this.
I suspect that, if asked, they would say that because Western civilization is so dominant, its sins are much worse and need to be focused on, whereas less "privileged" cultures are less worrying because they are less powerful.
They wouldn't acknowledge that. They'd just claim that the sins of less powerful cultures are the fault of western civilization. Have you never heard leftists claim that all the bad things poor people in poor countries do to each other are actually the fault of westerners?
"We brought liquor to the Red Man."
My grandfather always brought liquor and Red Man chewing tobacco to family gatherings, insensitive old fart.
(Collects grandfather's WWII Army uniforms from storage and throws them in the garbage.)
As good an explaination as any, though they've been marionetted into this by the cultural marxists that wish to see the entire Western canon rendered unto the pile of burning books.
Well Epi, that is about the best articulated explanation that I have heard. It isn't weird, it is extremely common and afflicts in varying degrees.
In the Raamayana, Sita is kidnapped by the demon Rahvanna who wants to marry her, but she remains chaste and proves her faithfulness to her husband by trying and failing to burn herself to death. Not clear on why Rahvanna, being a demon, doesn't rape her. Probably because he wasn't white or european.

Look, is this the wrong time to suggest a showing of Shakespeare's *Titus Andronicus* at Columbia? Apart from the evil black guy, the human sacrifice, the rape, the murder, the mutilation, and (SPOILER ALERT) the cannibalism, it's basically The Smurfs in blank verse.
I don't remember an evil black guy in The Smurfs...
How could you forget Shafty Smurf?
I, too, am offended that I cannot be a satyr and have fun crazy sex with naiads and dryads.
Brett, go to google and type in "furries yiffy". You won't thank me, but you'll be able to have all the costumed sex you want.
I just want to have sex with the hot athropormorphization of water!
Doesn't that happen to you in the shower every morning? Or just me?
Better yet, and actually apropos to the topic of this article, search for "otherkin".
Oh, for the good old days when schoolboys (but not schoolgirls) had to recite Ovid in the original Latin, and the only thing it would trigger would be massive fapping.
To be completely fair, for schoolboys most anything can trigger massive fapping. I mean, a woman's face on a cereal box, a suggestive knot in a treetrunk... olives are fuckable, if you have enough of them.
"One would hope that when approached privately about such a matter, a professor would be sensitive to the student's concerns and offer alternative assignment options."
Why should special flowers be exempt from required reading in a college setting? They are at the school voluntarily, and presumably taking the class as an elective or one of several options to fulfill some requirement.
If one cannot bare the slings and arrows of life long enough to read one of the most seminal works in the Western canon, GTFO.

As a survivor of sexual assault
Given that the modern feminists consider looking at a woman to be a "sexual assault" and "sex I regret having" is "rape" I'm inclined to see the problem as a bit overblown. I do hope that universities think twice before banishing Western culture entirely.
If you want to put forth your concerns unimpeached, you have to be a member of that club. That the term is getting watered down to the point of meaninglessness doesn't enter their thought process.
If I were a student on a college campus today, I would do everything in my power to "trigger" every one of these delicate disgraces at every turn.
Have fun at the star chamber proceedings!
You wouldn't be a student on that particular college campus for long.
When Rico Soave calls for your side of the events, don't make him use the n-word in his write-up.
I think if Subway makes the wrong sandwich for you are technically a 'survivor' these days.
A Subway sandwich artist once drew a portrait of Mohammed in mustard on my BMT. I haven't been able to go back since.
they used to refer to people like this as "not college material". but now they are just cash cows and the goal is to get the fools to sign on the line which is dotted.
can't help but notice the CFPB is completely absent in what is likely the largest financial transaction these mullets will ever be involved in and all they get is a rapidly devaluing piece of paper. but the CFPB was created by people up to their eyeballs in the sting.
to sign on the line which is dotted
David Mamet is smiling.
Agreed. If this is indeed merely a "dialogue" about the potential problems faced by disaffected students, then I hope it ends with the interlocutors deciding that people who are traumatized by literature need to go to the doctor, and we should get on with teaching everyone else.
Of course people turning red and screeching about the libruls is not a helpful addition to the dialogue.
Shut up Tony.
John you are triggered to the point of mumbling idiocy by some pretty mild stuff, so I don't know what position you are in to bitch.
Shut up, Tony.
"Of course people turning red and screeching about the libruls is not a helpful addition to the dialogue."
Well, when the libruls are the primary people attempting to censor works of art because ZOMG TRIGGERED it's safe to say most libruls are self-evidently too stupid to add much of anything to any dialogue of any value.
Present company notably included.
Are most liberals in favor of such nonsense? Or are these things kind of cherry picked in order to give you guys something to foam at the mouth about? I think it will be intelligent liberals who push back effectively at this, not people whose main gripe in the world is that they can't call people niggers in polite company anymore.
Shut up, Tony.
"I think it will be intelligent liberals who push back effectively at this"
What if we just don't want to wait for them to get back from the unicorn farms in Neverland.
Oh so southern democrats?
I'm just hoping for a president who can speak with a negro dialect if he needs to
I think it will be intelligent liberals who push back effectively at this
I'll believe it when I see it. So far I haven't seen any pushback from them at all.
And you can imagine my disappointment when the Tooth Fairy didn't weigh in, either.
If people with Ph.D's in various subjects on college campuses do not qualify as "intelligent liberals" then I don't know who does.
being educated isn't the same as being intelligent
Whoever is running the Tony handle: Having hourly displays of the increasingly bizarre idiocy of your fellow travelers day after day after day must be tiring.
Why don't you can that shit and come on over to the light?
But do we really want him?
Well, I have to slightly amend what I just said. I've seen Camille Paglia push back, although most liberals regard her as beyond the pale.
FYI there's a great interview with Camille Paglia in the new paper version of Reason, which just came in the mail yesterday.
FYI there's a great interview with Camille Paglia in the new paper version of Reason, which just came in the mail yesterday.
What, and what?
"not people whose main gripe in the world is that they can't call people niggers in polite company anymore."
LOL, WHY ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT THE LIBRULS I BET YOU ALL JUST WANT TO CALL PEOPLE NIGGERS
Never change Tony. You have the IQ of a retarded bunny rabbit and should probably have realized by now that if we're going to talk about intelligent liberals, you are not among their number.
Well yesterday he made some incredibly racist comments about black people being almost subhuman.
It doesn't surprise me that he is once again projecting his vile racism onto others.
Yeah this is the problem right here. You don't even want to understand the arguments.
Are you in the A/V club? Cause that is some serious, grade A projection bro.
You're the gift that keeps on giving. You wildly gesticulate about the racists who are just everywhere according to you and then whine when people call you a racist back.
Everyone's a little bit racist. Liberals are working on the problem, while conservatives are bitching that they're the true victims of racism.
Noi Tony, I understood them perfectly.
In fact, I'll link to them so that others can enjoy your vile stereotypes of black people as being inferior to whites and thus needing to be regulated and controlled and denied freedom for their own good.
You are a racist piece of shit. And I repeat my assertion that had you lived one hundred years ago, there is no question in my mind that you would have donned a white hood to terrorize catholics, blacks and mormons.
Because you are a vile racist POS.
Again, you're not even trying. You're being glib and you know it. It is a fact that black people are born with less of a statistical chance of succeeding than white people. This is because they are more likely to be born into poverty and, as a matter of demonstrated fact, suffer from existing racism in society (e.g., equally qualified job applicants have different hire rates depending on whether their names "sound" black).
Appreciating these facts of the world is a first step in confronting the problem. You are choosing to ignore the problem and crap out nonsense about bootstraps. It doesn't matter to me what you feel in your heart about other races, it matters that your ideas are bad for them.
"It doesn't matter to me what you feel in your heart about other races, it matters that your ideas are bad for them."
Pot, meet the kettle.
Shut up, Tony.
Shut up, Tony.
Shut up, Tony.
Shut up, Tony.
"people whose main gripe in the world is that they can't call people niggers in polite company anymore."
Which is basically no one. Talk about cherry picking your opponents.
I think it will be intelligent liberals who push back effectively at this, not people whose main gripe in the world is that they can't call people niggers in polite company anymore.
So we can expect an impassioned plea to your fellow lefty academics to remedy this idiocy when ........never.......it's never coming is it.
One simply doesn't criticize ones ideological fellows.
If you want to look at the root cause of this idiocy, you're going to wind up screeching about the libruls.
I'll get around to it after I'm done screeching about how conservatives are literally destroying life on the planet and the economic well-being of most of the citizens of my country.
*citation needed*
I heard the planet is warming up. Someone forgot to tell the whippoorwills. The nighttime sounds of my childhood have been returning, nesting further south because in spite of all the warming things are cooling off.
I'm triggered by your mention of a poor boy being whipped.
Who needs science when we have you and your personal experiences right outside your house?
When the warming trend started it was obvious. There were signs everywhere.
Now that a cooling trend has started and the signs are everywhere it means nothing, right?
Actually, there isn't a cooling trend yet. Temps have been more or less level for about 16 years or so.
The interesting thing, to me, though is that the sun has gone very, very quiet, which is associated with higher cloud cover and cooler global temperatures.
The failure of the positive feedback loops that were supposed to increase water vapor and methane in the atmosphere, however have nothing to do with the sun, and but do trumpet the failure of the models used to make predictions of impending .catastrophe
Suthenboy, the continental US takes up 1.5% of the planet's surface. It could be a nationwide blizzard and it still wouldn't count as evidence in your favor. The warming is mostly going to the oceans. Where people don't tend to poke their heads out windows and declare all of science a lie and make claims about the entire planet.
That's interesting... the ARGOS system shows no evidence of this Tony!
You do understand that your assertion is utterly fact free and the product of superstition rather than observation, right?
In climate discussions, the most common error is focusing on a single piece of the puzzle while ignoring the big picture.
Oh God! That is so funny!
Tony, did you actually read that article you hastily googled?!?
Because it in no way makes the point you think it's making.
1) Every year the Argos network's coverage expands. It's not showing ocean warming from year to year!!!!!
2) The article says the previous system of measurement (which was a non systematic series of measurements of much fewer data points) introduced a cooling bias in the past, so
3) They use ocean level rise as a proxy for ocean heat content and say that since the oceans have been rising for 40 years, this means heat is going into the oceans.
Of course, the big problem is
1) Sea level rise is not accelerating (which it would if increased amounts of heat were being deposited in the ocean as a result of CO2 buildup)
2) The Argos system is not showing any significant warming trend in the recent past. If the heat transfer imbalance between the Earth and the Sun is getting ever higher, there should be a trend.
So essentially, what skeptical science (or as I think of them credulous superstitions) is arguing (when they take breaks from photoshopping their faces onto pictures of Nazis) is arguing that direct observations should be ignored in favor of proxies since the direct observations falsify their pet theory. ROFL
Okay, since you deem SS untrustworthy, and I know Anthony Watts (a blogger) to be one of the world's foremost outcome-oriented misinformers on this subject (his "paper" on this subject is directly criticized in my link), what do you consider a neutral arbiter we could both agree on? Not Wikipedia, not NASA, not NOAA, not the National Academies of Science?
Anthony Watts runs a pretty good clearinghouse website on climate related issues.
I am not suprised that Credulous Superstitions accuses him of misinforming people.
1) They are liars.
2) Anthony Watts provides a platform for people to publish a wide variety of papers, a non insignificant number of which are ones he disagrees with, because he wants to promote discussion and analysis (which is how science advances.
As to a neutral arbiter, there ain't one.... 😉 because this isn't a legal case.
The hypothesis predicting that increased CO2 in the atmosphere will result in slower radiational cooling at night time is pretty well confirmed.
The hypothesis that this will trigger positive feedbacks in the form of increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (primarily CH4 and H20) which is the only hypothesis that leads to catastrophic global warming has been falsified by observational evidence.
The hypothesis that these positive feedbacks haven't occured because the ocean has absorbed the heat has not made any predictions that have been confirmed (it's almost impossible to falsify it because of the massive heat capacity of the oceans and how poorly instrumented it is).
The hypothesis that these positive feedbacks haven't occured because aerosol cooling is counteracting the CO2 heating has been falsified.
There are a bunch of other theories. I am particularly intrigued by Willis Eschenbach's claim that thunderstorms are, via convection, the mechanism by which that missing heat is being dumped into space. That process, incidentally is entirely non linear, venting heat like a relief valve whenever local temperatures get to 32 - 34C.
That would, of course, nicely explain a great deal, since the oceans and the air above them essentially act on local scales to keep temperatures within a narrow band, and explain why all sorts of feedback systems never get going.
No Tarran. All that extra heat is hiding deep down in the ocean where you can't go to find it.
We don't know how it got there, nor do we know how it is hidding from us. But we know it's there, hidden, hidden and waiting to wreck havoc and destruction upon the world.
And you can't prove that that isn't true so that means it is true and it's going to destroy the planet unless we raise taxes or quit burning oil, or unless we enact cap and trade, give Al Gore some money..... or something.
We must do something even if it's wrong.
...says the guy making claims about the entire planet.
Shut up, Tony.
Tony is my best friend and you are just jealous that he is smarter than everyone else on this board put together times infinity to the infitieth power, especially you!!!!!
Yeah, and besides, some scientists took a vote, so now the 'science is settled!"
From now on we don't need the ridiculous 'scientific method' anymore, all science will be settled by a popular vote. And then people like Tony, who as far as I can tell has no scientific background, can make fun of other people (even experts) who question a hypothesis by saying they deny 'science'!
A popular vote of experts determines if there is a consensus and how big it is. It is not useless information if you're interested in knowing what the most likely truth is.
To a person deniers want to claim that what the fat man on the radio told them, or what they personally would prefer to believe, trumps what science actually says is the truth. "Consensus is not science" doesn't mean that science says whatever you want.
Not that long ago we could have taken a survey of experts and a greater number would agree (even more than most of the 'global warming' skewed surveys produced) that stomach ulcers were caused by stress and hyperacidity, and could only be treated, not cured. Guess what? They were all wrong! Turns out stomach ulcers were due to an infection that could easily be treated. You never even hear about ulcers any more.
There's an incredible number of examples of every expert being way off in science. A consensus does not show 'what the most likely truth is'. Only by constantly challenging a hypothesis and trying to disprove it -- the core of the scientific method -- is actual 'truth' ever found.
Please feel free to link to the 'consensus' votes on global warming, I've read them and they shouldn't have even passed peer review they are so biased and poorly done. The most famous one, the one that led to the oft-quoted "97%" number, was of 68 people who 'self-identified' as climate experts, who answered a mail survey. No chance of that being one-sided, right?
I fear a world where politics starts telling us what science is. You seem only too happy to support it. Just wait until the prevailing opinion is the opposite of what you want, suddenly you'll think the 'science' is not settled (no doubt you already believe this about GMO crops).
People learn about reliable sources and how science works starting like in elementary school. Because scientists were wrong in the past is not relevant to whether a specific field has got it right or wrong today. You are making positive falsifiable claims, and they happen not to align with what reliable scientific sources say, and that includes every important scientific body and publication on planet earth. I wish they were all wrong. It would literally be the best news ever. But you're not automatically right because ulcers.
Because scientists were wrong in the past is not relevant to whether a specific field has got it right or wrong today.
Of course it is.
You are making positive falsifiable claims, and they happen not to align with what reliable scientific sources say, and that includes every important scientific body and publication on planet earth.
My positive falsifiable claim is that no climate model yet devised fits the data collected to date, and that no temperature proxy identified during the creation of the existing models has been verified by subsequent data collection.
These are claims that are acknowledged even by climate alarmists. They just don't think the fact that they have been unable, to date, to formulate a hypothesis and then verify it with data should be seen as important, because "it's a crisis, there's no time!"
The hypothesis is that increased greenhouse gas emissions are adding energy to the planet's systems and causing changes in climate, and this is not only proven but has been uncontroversial for a century. It is precisely this hypothesis that you reject. It's not about models (which aren't as inaccurate as you claim, and are constantly being improved), it's about denying basic physics. One may reasonably deduce that the reason you guys dig yourself so deep in bullshit is that there are no policy implications that are palatable to you; thus you only add weight to the proposed policies. You'd be more helpful to your cause by not denying scientific facts for this reason and the more obvious reason that it makes you seem like idiots.
No, the hypothesis is that in spite of millions if years of temperatures remaining in a relatively small band, that the Earth's climate system has positive feedback and that the ECS will show roughly 3x the intrinsic sensitivity of a simple CO2 doubling. The fact that their models only work with feedback amplification partially countered by a significant aerosol term which is in the process of being significantly revised down coupled with a complete lack of skill at predicting ENSO-class events demonstrates that they don't even capture the basic fucking physics.
In other words, this expert is telling you to STFU about that which you can clearly never understand.
@NotAnotherSkippy Note also that right now, we really could stand quite a bit of warming, since for the past few million years, the global climate has been far too cold.
"It's not about models (which aren't as inaccurate as you claim,"
even though not one NOT ONE of their predictions has ever come true ?
Tony you are a piece of work. Not a good one but certainly one.
How old were you when your father abandoned you Tony ?
Are you going to be angry at the world for the rest of your life because he abandoned you ?
Yes. It's also pretty much irrelevant because by themselves, they would only cause small amounts of warming. The only reason climate change is even an issue is because of putative positive feedback mechanisms.
Correct. Even if the IPCC predictions for climate change were rock solid science, government intervention would be ineffective and harmful.
Our cause is doing just fine, thank you very much: there are no effective government policies on climate change in effect, and there won't be in the future; they would be economic and political suicide. You are simply to dull and out of touch with reality to realize that.
DON'T WORRY TONY I GOT YOU'RE BACK!11!!1!!
They consensus around here is you should shut up.
"A popular vote of experts determines if there is a consensus and how big it is. It is not useless information if you're interested in knowing what the most likely truth is."
Aaaaaaand there it is. We can now safely discount anything you have to say on the subject. You really have no idea what science is.
Consensus in science means two things. Jack and shit.
Me and the entire scientific community, which is just how you like it. You are seriously defining science as "whatever Suthenboy wants to believe regardless of evidence."
Too bad their own fucking data contradicts them. See Tung et al.
Talk about delusions of grandeur. Tony: "Me and the Pope both shit once a day, and I speak ex cathedra now!"
The only thing that there is fairly widespread agreement on is that humans are responsible for increased CO2 concentrations and a modest amount of warming. That's all.
All the idiot has done is restate the Goracle's pronouncement.
And saying that Consensus is more likely to be science, doesn't mean that science says whatever you want either.
History is full of scientific "consensus" being overturned by "deniers". That is not to say that today's denier is automatically tomorrow's consensus, but claiming that consensus-building is more valid than denying that consensus is equally unscientific.
If science could ever be "settled" by a popular opinion, we would literally be stuck in the dark ages, where celestial bodies orbit the Earth and demons make you sick.
Truly, you are the most brilliant man on all the internets! Go! Save the planet from conservatives! Only one as glorious as yourself can succeed!
I'll get around to it after I'm done screeching about how conservatives are literally destroying life on the planet
I thought we were talking about proggy idiocy on campus.
Ron will be along shortly, I'm sure, with a CAGW thread.
I thought we were talking about proggy idiocy on campus.
We were, until a troll and his compulsive feeders derailed it. Which was exactly what "Tony" wanted to happen.
Oh hush...
We had plumbed the depths of proggy idiocy. What was left to say that hadn't already been said?
We gotta bait Tony in order to answer that question!
Ran out of baking soda for your science experiment again? I've posted the CSIRO data enough times that it's obvious you just want to deny the science. The planet is substantially greener now with more plant biomass than 20 years ago. Tell me how more life is killing again. This should be fun.
Ha. You're just plain out of your mind. Too many Roland Emmerich films does that I guess.
I am now triggered. You can't even agree with something without insulting someone else.
Or attempting to shelter this delicate snowflake from the painful realities of the human condition simply because she has experienced them is actually a greater disservice to both her and the broader human collective than should be allowed to stand. A University education, especially in the liberal arts and humanities, is all about being exposed to uncomfortable ideas and experiences, for it is only through a reading and understanding of those that we grow as a people.
Should we discontinue teaching about slavery or the holocaust altogether as these events may be triggering to black and Jewish students, and thereby fail to heed Cicero's warnings about those who ignore history being doomed to repeat it?
Miss the part where I said I agree with the article?
The part that came right before you lobbed an insult which was hilariously hypocritical given how often you whine about Rethuglicans and libertarians?
Tony howling about evil Rethuglicans in a situation that makes no sense = justifiable.
Libertarians criticizing specific stupid people who happen to be leftists = howling about libruls.
Tony has a hard time with logic or self-awareness.
It was mostly directed at John, who collectivizes all liberals and basically advocates for their being all gassed to death (if he's having a bad day). I'm merely pointing out that there is an intelligent way to approach this debate and a stupid moron way. The article itself is the former.
"collectivizes all liberals"
Um, have you not read your own comments on this very thread? Pot calling porcelain black?
"intelligent way to approach this debate"
There is no debate; the other side is refusing to debate anything at all; they want a monologue. On can't debate with someone who is screaming and has their fingers stuck in their ears, which describes most leftists on most issues, certainly anything having to do with race, gender, class, etc.; indignation and race or gender-shaming is seen as a substitute for argument. See your own comments for examples.
"fail to heed Cicero's warnings"
Wait, wasn't he named after a racist suburb of Chicago, you racist?
Of course people turning red and screeching about the libruls is not a helpful addition to the dialogue.
I know that noticing pertinent facts is considered offensive nowadays, but near as I can tell the op-ed was not penned by conservatives or libertarians.
Those would be the people penning arguments expressing their own hypersensitivity about liberal hypersensitivity. I'm not saying ignore the problem, I'm just saying there are bigger ones that go completely ignored because conservatives and libertarians care primarily about being butthurt about not being invited to the cool parties while being racist misogynistic pigs.
Mocking the purveyors of this nonsense has nothing to do with "hypersensitivity" or concern about "cool parties". You're just projecting again, all bent out of shape because the one thing you progs can't handle is mockery.
Just admit we are right and shut up. I'm sure we would all be a lot less hysterical if liberals admitted we were right about this.
You're right about this and many other things, some of them even important.
"Liberal faggotry"
Fixed it for you.
"racist misogynistic pigs."
Thank you for demonstrating your own hypocrisy, stupidity, and moral bankruptcy with unprecedented efficiency. You don't even pretend to have actually listened to any criticism of your beloved ideology.
You left out "homophobic".
There is nothing "liberal" about that hypersensitivity; it is progressivism tending towards fascism.
Thank you for this wise and inspiring comment, Tony. I love you!
I feel unsafe when people feed the troll.
We have a special room for you with pictures of puppies and Play-Doh so you can recover.
Warty has been banned from that room. The puppies and Play-Doh weren't safe.
Puppies have sharp teeth and they hump. Isn't that kind of triggering too?
I thought you felt unsafe when you let Warty out of the basement. Which makes sense.
He doesn't bother with me anymore. He doesn't even tell me I'm pretty.
Well...you're not. In fact, there's something wrong with your face, Gracie Law.
"I heard you were dead."
We (as a culture, not me personally, as I don't give a shit about these morons) brought this on ourselves by acting as though the approval of these whiners is something worth having. It's like the Twitter mob people. I'm not on the Twitter so I neither know nor care what goes on there.
I used to counter the argument that Americans are less well-educated than their forebears with the observation that we certainly graduate a hell of a lot of literate and numerate students. Sure, they're not every one of them classically read or prodigies in math and arts and sciences, but it's an unfair comparison between modern students for whom a universal education is a guarantee (nominally, anyway) with the sons and daughters of affluent families of the past. Taking the peasantry into account we're doing relatively well.
And then stories like these remind me that we've probably hit a point of diminishing returns with public education, and you're not going to create a Renaissance generation from mediocre minds. Instead you get pedagogical fruitcakes like this.
Read some personal correspondences from poor people of generations past. They make our current day graduate students look like rambling mongoloids by comparison.
How can liberals be properly multicultural if they get into a panic over merely reading the literature of other cultures? Can they read about cultures that practice female genital mutilation without activating "triggers"? How about honor killings or the stoning of rape victims?
Well, what color are the perpetrators?
It's mostly the euro-centric patriarchical hetero- cis-, etc. etc. that triggers them. Rape apologists or only whites owned slaves or something. Minorities can only be victims.
Also, your comment triggered me.
They don't get triggered by anything, as evidenced by the fact that things like genital mutilation or honor killings or (any number of atrocities perpetrated by non-western cultures) don't trigger them. They are putting on a show - like all progressivism it's about posturing and social signaling, not principled beliefs.
I have actually read the Metemorphoses cover to cover. And honestly, I don't know what the fuck the article is talking about. There are not "vivid descriptions" of rape that I can remember. I mean, there are rapes, but it's not like it goes into specific lengthy detail about the size of Zeus's cock. I'm not even sure the word "rape" is used. It's more like some lusty God chases down some nubile young female and ravages her in the dewy grass. With lots of allusions to nymphs and satyrs. None of this would remotely resemble the sort of rape that a typical college female would likely experience. Nothing in Greek mythology actually describes Hades literally raping Persepone. He just grabs her and carriers her off in his chariot, and what happens is left to the imagination.
It forces these delicate flower blossoms to employ their unblemished minds in the cause if imagining the tragedies taking place, thereby losing the virginal substance of their pristine innocence. And that is what we call mind rape, and you're going to jail, pal.
How... Victorian.
"it's not like it goes into specific lengthy detail about the size of Zeus's cock."
someone misread the parts about the Lightening Bolts
You obviously got the HBO softcore version, not the upclose HD bangbros version. Spoiler alert: Hades is into ass-play.
Did you see statue-Zeus' face in the photo?
"I've remained in this condition for several centuries - suck it, Viagra!"
"I should have called the doctor like 20147996 hours ago."
He should have just called the Head Nurse.
No co-pay with Obamacare.
The pictured statue is The Rape of Persephone by Bernini. It is a permanent exhibit at the Villa Borghese museum in Rome.
I first saw this magnificent statue when I was 12, at which time I learned the myth behind the statue.
That a semi-adult in college would protest that education in art and literature is "triggering" speaks to how pathetic such creatures are. That anybody would pay attention to them and coddle their neurotic insecurities is even more pathetic. Somebody ought to open up a big can of grow-the-fuck-up.
"I first saw this magnificent statue when I was 12, at which time I learned ______" HOW TO RAPE
We should teach our kids how not to rape!!!11!!!11!!!!
please people.
This incessant whining about so-called "social justice activism" on college campuses is a bunch of TEAM RED KULTURWARRIOR hyperbolic griping about a nearly non-existent phenomena. You're acting like you're all about to jump in your pickup trucks and go save REAL AMERICA from all those faggy book-lurnin types. it is embarrassing, not to mention a a retarded and self-defeating way to think. if the idea of liberty becomes wedded to this kind of asinine and vaguely sinister anti-intellectualism, it's doomed.
You misspelled AmeriKKKa, again
I was going for more of an "Elitist Snit" thing rather than a 9/11-truther... but i see how the capitalization might be misleading.
Speaking of incessant whining.
I thought you loved mirrors?
I'm not sure what that means, but have fun continuing to shit your pants.
You seem offended by your own words.
re: pants shitting - ?
" if the idea of liberty becomes wedded to this kind of asinine and vaguely sinister anti-intellectualism, it's doomed."
DOOOMED!?
Who is the one exaggerating things?
Look, dude. If you want to engage in TEAM RED conspiracy theories about the communists infiltrating our most sacred institutions and subverting america from within, well, you enjoy yourself. It's just a little embarrassing, that's all.
" TEAM RED conspiracy theories about the communists infiltrating our most sacred institutions"
Is that what this is?
I thought it was cheap laughs at the expense of fragile, too-serious people.
Just "Embarrassing", now? I thought "Liberty is doomed" because we're all reactionary conservative anti-intellectuals.
Because what's more 'intellectual' than censorship?
I wonder if anyone reads "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" anymore
You want to talk about triggers in the classroom?
I once took a class on Zoroastrianism: History and Practice at UCLA. Some of you may know that there is a huge Persian community in Westwood (around UCLA), made up of people who fled the Iranian revolution. Well, it turns out there were a good number of legit Zoroastrians among them, and a whole bunch of them were in this class with me. It was an academic perspective, though. Different from what they expected.
It was like taking a class on creationism from Dawkins--with a bunch of Baptist fundamentalists.
We were studying the practice and implications of xw?d?dah.
http://www.iranicaonline.org/a.....ext-of-kin
Has anyone else ever been in a class where the professor, after a tremendous amount of heated argument, systematically proved that half the people in the class were the product of generation after generation of incest--and they were identifiable by race and religion?
Most contentious class I ever took. The rage. The threats. At one point I thought they were going to physically attack the professor.
Trigger or not trigger, somehow we all survived.
Most of the classes I've taken were entirely forgettable. I'll never forget that one. That's the kind of class that makes it fun to go to college.
"Has anyone else ever been in a class where the professor, after a tremendous amount of heated argument, systematically proved that half the people in the class were the product of generation after generation of incest--and they were identifiable by race and religion?"
A friend of mine worked in Iran in a mine. The workers came from two different towns in the middle of nowhere. He said "They all only had two faces and whichever face was looking at me told me which town they were from."
I thought incest was only a practice of the Zoroastrian upper classes, similar to the Egyptians. But apparently it's unclear. You'd think this is the sort of self-punishing practice that only rich people could sustain.
I wrote a paper about it in a classics class.
The other thing they did...differently...was with their dead. They thought of fire as a sacred substance, so they wouldn't burn dead bodies like their Vedic cousins. They couldn't contaminate the earth by burying dead bodies either. So they practiced the "rite of exposure", where, they basically left the bodies out in a special area to be eaten by buzzards and insects.
I believe they still do this in some parts of the world, although the Iranian government shut them down after the Revolution for sanitation reasons.
Anyway, in my paper I made the argument that the first part of the Oedipus Cycle being about the next of kin marriage and the last part (Antigone) being about the rite of exposure--that's just to coincidental to be a coincidence.
The backdrop of the Oedipus Cycle is about how the Greek gods won't suffer a Zoroastrian to rule over a Greek city state in Greece proper. Every time the king (be it Oedipus or Creon) starts to act like a Zoroastrian, the crops won't grow, logos breaks down, etc.
It's basically like war propaganda. I compared it to The Manchurian Candidate. Oedipus doesn't know he's in the service of the enemy, and it may seem unfair, but obviously, he can't be allowed to rule having married his mother like a Zoroastrian Persian--anymore than we could let a communist agent become President during the Cold War--whether he knew he was under their control or not.
http://90airmaxsko.org/
"I thought incest was only a practice of the Zoroastrian upper classes, similar to the Egyptians. But apparently it's unclear. You'd think this is the sort of self-punishing practice that only rich people could sustain."
It's a maladaptation.
And according the professor and all the literature he gave us, it was absolutely common.
It was the standard.
If your mother was available when you came of age, you married her. If your father was available when you came of age, you married him. If he/she wasn't available, you married your brother or sister. If no brothers or sisters were available, you married your first cousin. If no cousins were available, why bother getting married?
The Zoroastrians were/are obsessed with purity, and a big part of that has to do with keeping your bodily fluids in check. There's a story in the Old Testament about how a guy pulled out and spilled his seed on the ground--and God struck him dead. Those stories were compiled when the Hebrews were under the Persians--and there were death sentences for things like that. If you were caught urinating or defecating in a river, you could be put to death.
The purest place to put these things was back where they came from. Keep it in the family!
There have been lots of maladaptations. They've done/do things in Papua New Guinea that don't make much sense--and cannibalism probably isn't the worst of them.
"It was like taking a class on creationism from Dawkins--with a bunch of Baptist fundamentalists."
That actually sounds like a lot of fun.
It also reminds me of Dennis Hopper's "Eggplant" speech in True Romance
Well, that's actually the thing about Zoroastrianism - it's pretty much a nice religion. For some strange reason, I've known several (and have relatives who are) and it's really a fairly nice religion, as far as religions go.
It really pisses me off that Islam displaced it. The world would be much better off if that were not the case...
" such as the Roman classical poet Ovid."
ENB YOU HAVE GOT TO BE SHITTING ME !!!!
Some ignoramuses whine about something stupid and everyone shits their pants. COLLEGE HAS BEEN INFILTRATED BY COMMUNIST MOLES AND AMERICA IS DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED
I bet you don't even have a pickup truck. I bet you drive one a them Volvas or something.
Vulvas?
Well, sure. Nor does a few black men being gunned down in questionable circumstances mean that cops are conducting a war on black men. But that doesn't mean isolated scenarios aren't indicative of a systemic problem, just that the problem is more nuanced than "war on blacks"?or "SJWs are taking over our universities."
Fine, but here the problem is more like, "stupid people say something stupid, get laughed at, then everyone except for their fellow losers goes back to ignoring them".
These ignoramuses run most of the student governments, and the fact that they will ever hold more power than a ditch digger is in itself a reason why we would ignore them at our own peril.
"Indicative" means that you then go out gathering real evidence to make a point about a serious issue; if you can't make a good case, you forget about the original point.
Police conducting a war on black men is a serious claim that needs serious evidence to back up, and there is little: police violence has been slight decreasing over time, and victims of police violence reflect the racial composition of violent criminals. Hence, no evidence.
Columbia doing stupid things with their curriculum is an amusing diversion, something to be made fun of, like Charlize Theron cinnamon-bun breasts at the Oscars, or the Pope's silly hats. It's of no consequence otherwise, so let's not get all "indicative" this and "scenarios" that over it.
I blame the baby boomers.
No really.
Their effect was largely muted when their Greatest Generation elders were in charge. Now the baby boomers have aged their way up the ladder, and everything is going to shit because of it.
The Greatest Generation did so many amazing things. Survived the Great Depression. Beat Japan and the Nazis. Created the affluent suburban middle-class life we've all grown to expect as a minimum.
But, wow, did they ever raise some lousy kids!
I guess after growing up during the Great Depression, they thought their kids having it easy was the way things should be. Or maybe we should blame Dr. Spock.
No, not the guy on Star Trek!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Spock #Claims_that_Spock.27s_bo oks_led_to_the_anti-Vietnam_War_ movement_and_.22permissiveness.22
Being from the tail end of the baby boomers (born 1960) I sadly have to agree with you. I used to think it was pretty cool being a part of this generation, but I may have to adapt to my old college roommate's insistence that we really belong more with Gen X (at least my wife is in that generation, perhaps I can join by association).
As Eric Cartman often says, "God damned hippies!"
Really, what was so "great" about them? They were victims of failed economic policies, then failed foreign policies. They gave us Nixon, Ford, Kennedy, and Carter. They are responsible for the welfare state, ballooning debt, and the Cold War. And they clearly failed to inculcate in their children a sense of the importance of liberty and the need for frugality. They actually believed the myth that the Great Depression was the result of capitalism gone bad, and their experience in the military taught them dependency and faith in government, beliefs they passed on to their children and taught at universities; the philosophers and sociologists responsible for teaching "critical theory" and modern progressivism were largely from the "Greatest Generation".
The so-called "Greatest Generation" deserves our pity for the hardship they suffered, but don't kid yourself: the Great Depression and WWII screwed them up big time, and they are primarily responsible for creating the political, social, and economic problems we are facing.
Man, i hope these fragile children never pick up a translation of Catullus.
Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo, Xeoneus.
I AM TRIGGERED
They didn't have triggers back then, so instead you should be FUSTIBALUSED!
How to say "I will sodomize you and face fuck you" in Latin!

Re: Tony,
First off - hats off for turning a conversation about classical Greek and Roman learning into a Climate Change rant.
Second, Climate Change is not Global Warming. The latter is a known phenomenon with several possible explanations, the most popular being AGW; the former is a completely loaded term used by the scientifically-illiterate little Marxians to bamboozle the scientifically-illiterate non-Marxians into thinking the Volcano God needs virgins to appease it.
Blah blah blah Marxian blah blah. Wasn't there a time when you said things that had a tiny bit of actual content? Or am I misremembering?
Re: Tony,
Your mind is murky, all right. All my comments have content.
No Tony you are a joyless, loveless, whats the word I am looking for. Oh yeah, a non-logical stoic. your posts make that concept a reality. =)
Tony is a great example of someone who lacks self-awareness. He accuses me of posting comments without content yet there he is, yelling and screaming in his pajamas and wearing the same "The End Is Near Unless We Get Rid Of Capitalism!" sign.
How about we take a vote on whether Rent-boy should fuck off? He pretends to support democracy, right?

And how does bailing out the auto companies that produce the most CO2 emitteing cars in the world solve the problem again?
There is a strong case to be made that leftist policies on the environment have thus far been on net counterproductive. But at least your intentions are good.
" Volcano God needs virgins to appease it."
Fucking shit OM now I have to swim upstream. =)
Dale: I say let the world warm up, let's see what Boutros Boutros Ghali Ghali has to say about that. We'll grow oranges in Alaska!

Which fossil fuel burning auto manufacturer do we have to thank for ending the Ice age ?
I am sure the Iliad triggers feminists because Zeus is such a badass. When my daughter was taking a class in greek mythology, I told her to add the word "bitch or bitches" to the end of anything Zeus says. See how much awesome there is in greek literature.
I am trying to figure out how we have stories out of colleges where a professor can require students to take an exam in the nude but others come under fire for making students read classical literature. How can both these things exist at the same time?
That seems fairly consistent to me.
They're both about people trying to inflict morality on college professors.
The liberals have created their own monsters, and now the monsters are turning on their creators.
And then the Anti-Rape Culture crowd went into the great library, burned the books, killed Hypatia and cut her body to pieces with sea shells.
Maybe we're witnessing a great reformation or the creation of a new era of circumspection and puritanism - a great pious revival, if you will. Who knows? This situation presents the greatest of ironies: self-described liberal minds being riled by obscenity, when not long ago what was considered obscene art and literature were nonetheless touted as the greatest achievements of the liberal arts.
"was", not "were". I clicked the wrong button... again.
WE NEED A NEW BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES OM !!!!!!!!
So is it all rape and violence in lit. that precious snowflake is hiding from or just Mythology? Can she read modern authors that depict rape? Is it only the mythological rape of the Gods that triggers or real violent scenes by humans? I also had to get past a sexual assault, it isn't fun but it has to be done. You can't lay down as a "victim" and expect the world to tip toe around you, you have to stand up, square the shoulders and get on with it. I promise you, more have survived worse and gotten on with their lives.
Imagine if she did not disengage, it would be the mortician preserving her...
Actually, she must be a very strong woman; it takes stamina to carry a fainting couch around all day, a la Mattress Girl...
Also, shut up, Tony.
Wouldn't it be nice if people who were mentally ill sought treatment so that they could live in the real world instead of trying to shape the external world around their need to avoid confronting their neuroses?
That sort of insight is not available to them.
"As a result, the student completely disengaged from the class discussion as a means of self-preservation. She did not feel safe in the class. When she approached her professor after class, the student said she was essentially dismissed, and her concerns were ignored"
As should have been done. lolz
As many students have long-term family histories of stag transformations, swan assaults and shower of gold descents, universities should establish deity-proof safe zones and subsidize placatory offerings of oxen, sheep, doves and white puppies to deter Olympian recidivism.
A strict ban on toga parties is also called for.
Golden showers?
Homo Foetus Positio strikes again.
"survivor, a person of color, or a student from a low-income background" you realize they are making a case for returning to 18th century university recruitment, right?
Dammit, aren't you supposed to be "triggered" when you hear of Persephone's rape & kidnapping? Aren't you supposed to think, "That must've been pretty awful!"? If not, the poet didn't do his job. If you've actually been sexually assaulted yourself, that just gives you a (heh) leg up in commiserating.
What am I missing here?
Same thing with descriptions of battle if you've actually been in battle. I'd think that'd make you popular in the class, as you could talk about the experience from experience, helping to bring ancient poetry to life.
Exactly, in an attempt to forward progressive enlightenment these idiots are stifling legitimate dialogue. One cannot broaden his/her mind by pretending unpleasant things don't exist.
Who killed Homer?
They did.
It's not too unusual for college students to think too much of themselves and their own sensibilities. The difference today is the people in the media and government who pander to them. The result is a more pussified generation than we've seen before.
Manufacturing discontent
Yes, and college ought to be an excellent environment in which people can overcome these harmful limitations by exposing themselves to new and sometimes uncomfortable ideas.
Shut the front door!
This is an actual, real story!
Just think what will happen when these children have to face an actual crisis. It won't be pretty.
what the
I am trying to figure out how we have stories out of colleges where a professor can require students to take an exam in the nude but others come under fire for making students read classical literature. How can both these things exist at the same time?http://www.chaussurenikeventes.org/
The goose stepping minions commenting are breathtaking. They trip over themselves spouting mindless ramblings to themselves. Saner minds, not brainwashed by perverted Professors would not defend this madness. A student was mentally abused and she is blamed by the herd for her reaction? War on Women?
Wait, are you a very talented poseur? Or a dyed in the wool pussy?
If the former, bravo.
If the latter - who really gives a shit about you or your 'mentally abused' little flower?
So, basically, no literature at all. No Shakespeare (except Bowdler's expurgated version "that would not bring a blush to the most modest of maidenly cheeks."), no "Huckleberry Finn" (gotta avoid the greatest line in AmLit, "All right, then, I'll go to hell"), no "Catcher In The Rye", certainly no "To Kill A Mockingbird", no . . . Oh, to Hell with all such mewling, lick-spittle wretches, and the corrupt cabals from within which they spew!
Homeschooling through graduate school it is then. Maybe I'll just encourage my son to be a welder and buy him a copy of Metamorphoses to read on his own...
When you dismiss these students because you are uneasy with the western canon being criticized -instead of reading what they say- that is an act of ideological self-preservation.
No, when you dismiss these students and people who defend them it's because you are uneasy with weak-minded losers dictating curriculum. I doubt these students have the intellectual resources to actually critique Ovid. Refusing to read or listen to something and then whining about it is criticizing.
Either the last sentence is sarc or 'is' should be 'isn't'
I did read what they said. I don't take it seriously because it's intellectually stunted tripe written by emotionally retarded narcissists.
Stop trying to punish western civilization for your daddy issues.
I wonder if any of those students who were upset about reading Ovid, and others, fully understand just how bad life could be back in those days. Women were, unless independently wealthy and from a high ranking family, possessions of men, property. Household servants--slaves--could be sexually assaulted by the master, they too were property. Most hard physical work was done by slaves, and to rebel meant to be severely punished or killed. Conquered people, or religious deviants (Christians) were forced into the arena to be slaughtered by gladiators or wild animals.
And what about the history classes that discuss the horrors of war, whether a Roman battle in which 80,000 men died in one day--from swords and spears and arrows--to the U. S. Civil War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and Viet Nam. Any returning vets from the Iraq War and the Afghanistan conflict who has PTSD could be seriously affected, right? We can't teach about wars then.
So, let's not teach history at all. In fact, why don't we do what ISIS does when confronted with history and historical sites that does not fit into their narrow belief system, destroy it. Let's burn the books and bulldoze the past. There. All done. Feel better now?
What are these students going to do when they get out in the real world, and have to buy a replacement electrical connector, and the sales-person asks "Male or female?" I think that maybe this is why Apple comes up with so many different connectors that don't mate with anyone else. Maybe it is a side attempt by Apple to de-legitimize any sort of sexual mating, of the old fashioned way, to transform the society to newer, gentler methods.

As a multiple rape survivor, the best thing I did was to get over it and get on with my life. To give other people control over you through their words is infantile. The World is a tough place, maybe too tough for these precious little flowers to deal with.
Idiocracy - coming to a country near you!
All this social justice trigger warning crap is infuriating enough, but it gets really dangerous when they try to force the rewriting of history and classical literature. History should be preserved, warts and all, or future generations will be completely ignorant of its significance.
Erasing a history (Western canon) that proves your ideology to be unworkable might not be such a bad move, if you're trying to sway people to your side.
Now, I seriously doubt it's some kind of intentional conspiracy like that, but the outcome may very well be the same.
I'm a firm believer that school isn't for everyone.....
Paying to go to a prestigious school and then wanting to edit what you pay makes no sense.
I'm curious if this person has a television and pays for cable or Netflix. Then even more curious if they're going to ask these said companies to edit their networks in order to make them feel safe.
It's also ironic that most people say they want to go to school to make the world a better place when every other person in the world deals with a great amount of adversity and doesn't bitch about it at COLUMBIA. My teachwer says stuff that hewrts my feewings said no uneducated African girl ever.
What are these people going to school for? To be told they're doing a great job and they're a survivor? Pay your mom $40,000 a year to do that-I'm sure she'd be thrilled.
*My apologies if my mom comment triggered anyone without a mom, has an absent mom, or maybe a mom that made them go to church.
Check your ableism privilege! Not everyone has eyes to watch Netflix!!!!
Crap, now you have me all triggered again!!!!!
Burn all the books if you're going to burn any at all.
Then quit school altogether and educate yourselves online in your pajamas with controlled content.
That way you can be protected from any form of negative thought or criticism of your ideas.
At first, the pagan religious kook in me resented yet another complaint about the political incorrectness of classical mythology. But then I remembered that sensuous Aphrodite and chaste Artemis are apparently grooming me to be (among other things) a champion of youth liberation and uncoerced education, which obligates me to step back and look at the big picture. I think that the calls for "trigger warnings" in American universities are inspired by displaced anger at the rigidity and brutality of compulsion-based schooling for children and teenagers. The vast majority of Columbia's undergrads are young adults who have barely known any process of "learning" other than this manipulative, invasive form of social engineering. On a politically unconscious level, "Your syllabus is a trigger for me!" actually means "Let me have the freedom to choose my own course of study!"
This ought to trigger something in you- http://usatoday30.usatoday.com.....orse_N.htm
The "aggrieved" Columbia students bring to mind Denis Leary's epic rant on "No Cure for Cancer":
"I'm just not happy, I'm just not happy. I'm just not happy because my life didn't turn out the way I thought it would." Hey, join the fucking club! I thought I was going to be the starting center fielder for the Boston Red Sox. Life sucks, get a fucking helmet! Alright?

This is the kind of politically correct crapola that disgusts Columbia alumni such as myself, who are constantly importuned to contribute to support the ability of the institution to provide financial support for the students. Let these young fools keep their sensibilities unsullied, and find some way on their own to fund the $30,000-plus cost of a Columbia undergraduate education.

For those who are saying "what are they going to do when they enter the real world" I said the same thing 25 years when I was at college and some of the organizations I was involved in had mopes like these. But the problem is, THEY TOOK OVER. Practically the whole government and fiscal bureaucrats are these type of people.
Students said makes sense, for that matter we should draw attention.
If this young woman was a rape victim I'm sorry this happened to her; that's a crime. But it would also be a crime to ban classic literature from institutions of higher learning and throw the baby out with the bathwater because it offends some students' tender sensibilities. ALL good literature is provocative and literature should be taught, particularly the classics, in the context in which they were written. Students are so self-centered these days that they apply everything personally instead of considering the literature being a product of its era -- an era in which misogyny was part of the culture. Ovid, Aeschuylus, Sophocles -- great works of literature. Do we also stop teaching Shakespeare because of the violence, the teen suicides, the drug use, the unrepentant scheming? And what about the Bible, which is replete with rape, violence, bigamy, and incest? Perhaps Columbia professors could explain the literature on their syllabuses within the context of the history of the era in which it was written. But the idea of censorship, of banning the classics just because a student is uncomfortable, would set a terrifying precedent. Pretty soon, everyone will come up with a reason to find something in the curriculum "traumatic" and then nothing will be taught that won't challenge their minds. A Columbia education will become a joke.
Very interesting piece. I think the author is too soft on the triggered. Somebody who "feel[s] uncomfortable with certain material" related to the classics (or to life in general), may have good reasons to be pitied, although I am not sure. What is sure is that she should go into the chemistry of cooking, quantum physics, or econometrics instead.

A LIE
I'm triggered by many people's comments, especially by Obama's and Michelle's accusations about racism. They invent fictional scenarios. One is Michelle's complaint that a woman asked her to help reach something on a high grocery store shelf.

I think that students are just messing with us. Since when have they become so sensitive? I mean , I have not notice anything like that before. But what I really think, they need to focus on their education and forget about their sensitive sides. I think that professors know the best. They went thought teacher training program long ago and it's been ok for so many years. So, get to your essays apply here for assistance, as they are all that matter. And, one more thing, it is the end of the semester, doesn't it seem weird why now is the time when they've noticed this?

I apologize for arriving at the conversation a little late. I had saved this article to read when I had the time, and I'm utterly aghast by this. I am currently teaching the Daphne myth with my high school students, and not a single one of them feels threatened or in physical peril.
Placing aside the hyper-sensitivity, let me focus on the extreme ignorance of students at one of the U.S.'s most renowned universities. The op-ed authors incorrectly state, "include vivid depictions of rape and sexual assault." Not only are there not graphic depictions of sexual assault, there isn't a single verse depicting any sexual action whatsoever. The Persephone myth is actually an allegory for a woman's experience of being torn from her family after marriage (Persephone), and the Daphne myth is a veiled criticism for the way in which Augustus violated the Republican government as he assessed greater and greater powers.
If these students weren't so busy inventing facts, or espousing ridiculous liberal-progressive argot, they might have bothered to investigate this simple truth and spared themselves a great deal of embarrassment.

Not that the SocJus crowd needs any further encouragement to ironically destroy themselves.... but tom hardy really is the first very-"Feminist" author.
((OMG PATRIARCHY!!))
Fuck Va. Woolf, Kate Chopin etc.... Hardy really dropped some bombs on the English gentry by pointing out how unbelievably shitty women had it in their society. "Daisy Miller" was also pretty hot.
seriously though, how sexist is that? "men are even better at feminism"
