Never let it be said that the U.S. authorities have a monopoly on absurdly restricting children's freedoms:
An eight-year-old girl in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, [Quebec,] was told she's no longer allowed to read books on the school bus because it poses a risk to the safety of other students.
?Sarah Auger loves reading and used to enjoy using her 20-minute ride to and from school to read for pleasure.
But recently, her bus driver told her she had to stop.
She says she was told reading posed a risk to other students on the bus.
He suggested they might stand up to see what she was reading, or she might poke herself in the eye with the corners of the book.
The school board is siding with the driver, because of course it is. "Obviously, reading a book is not a danger," it concedes in a press release. Still, "The driver is the master of his vehicle….He is the best judge of what is appropriate." And after all, "Any object, be it a book, a toy or electronic device can be a potential danger when a young child drops it and gets up to go get it while the bus is in motion." Therefore, such personal effects should be kept in closed bags. For safety's sake.
Looking back, it's a miracle I survived the first grade without getting impaled on a Charlie Brown collection.

I love that subreddit, but sometimes it's too easy.
This is just so hard for me right now. Too many problematic [opposing race] to really just be rocking out in [opposing race] places without feeling you have to water down your identity as to not seem like a threat.
Problematic - has to be SJW.
Before we do anything, the very first measure to adopt is to take all [enemy] out of all positions of decision-making immediately, and actually out of any kind of social, professional position whatsoever.
[list of especially objectionable kinds of people] across the world will simply be euthanised: the decisions will be taken by [our people] in a mass world tribunal for [enemy] crimes. This is by far the best solution, and is the most legitimate, ethical way of reducing [enemy] population to more reasonable levels. Such [enemy] would otherwise forever pose a threat to [our people and things we care about], and we know they have no chance of ceasing their [...] behaviour after having reached such an advanced stage of sadism and sociopathy. It would be reckless to spend space, resources and energy in keeping them alive in prisons.
All of [enemy's] (alive and euthanised) belongings, property, resources and land will be confiscated from [enemy] and handed back to [our people's] care and supervision [...]
This threw me for a loop though. I thought it had to be stormfront but it's SJW.
I don't know, that seems very SJW. An emphasis on decision making, forming a world tribunal, talk of ethics, expropriation. I'd expect a Stormfront guy to be more nationalist and, well, grounded.
I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? "The driver is the master of his vehicle....He is the best judge of what is appropriate."
Yeah, it's *his* bus. He can pick up hitchhikers, let the kids drink Molson's, lead the kids in rousing chorusus of "Frere Jacques," let his pet sheep wander in the aisle...just about anything he wants.
When I was 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, we had this one old bus driver, the guy was a hard core alcoholic. Everyone knew he was drunk all of the time. He would cuss us all out every day. One year, he got the job of driving for a summer camp that me and some of my friends had decided to go to. We showed up and couldn't believe it when we saw this guy is going to drive us. It was around a 2 hour trip. He was already drunk when we got there. He drove at times, around 90 miles an hour, on hills, all over the road, cussing like a preacher the entire time, threatening to kill us all. I thought he was going to kill us. He finally got fired before I ever got on a bus with him again. Several of us had called our parents and told the people at camp that we were not riding on the trip back with this maniac, so that probably had a lot to do with it. True story.
In any real school the teachers would have appointed a committee to take the bus driver out back and yell at him, "Look, stupid, we spend a large portion of our professional lives trying to encourage reading. STFU!" Then they would have whacked him with dictionaries to reinforce the lesson.
Maybe the bus driver had a point. Teachers only encourage reading approved books, the bus driver was merely trying to prevent further state indoctrination of the kid.
In Canada, they have bus drivers that can read? Well, I mean, surely you have to be able to read in order to advise other people when it's safe to read.
It's amazing what these bus drivers can achieve in other countries. In some countries they even become real dictators.
look, its because of our shitty educational system that American bus drivers can't read. Common Core will make the next generation of bus drivers competitive with the bus drivers of asian countries.
Korean bus drivers and cabbies are (or at least were circa 1999) insane, the only time it wasn't a white knuckle ride was when I had imbibed a few too many OB rhager and spent to much time in a soju tent.
So, you're saying the bus driver takes the bus and kids on long voyages, far from ready communication with his superiors and requires the power of life and death over the crew to ensure the voyage's success?
Because I thought it was ridiculous applying this 'Master and Commander' thinking to an *airliner's* 'captain' - its beyond ludicrous to do so to a fething bus driver.
I've been a coxswain, a barge pilot, and a causeway commander with full authority and responsibility for the safety of my crew and equipment, operating out of radio range of assistance and I still wouldn't have had the authority to tell a passenger they couldn't *read* while onboard.
I don't know. Think about it. People get employed into public education so that they can become mini-tyrants. As a bus driver, your opportunity for oppression is pretty limited. The kids are basically your only target victims.
Almost every bus driver that I had riding on a school bus was some sort of psychopath. Every once in a while you would get one who was nice and almost normal. And that person was always talked about because they were such a rarity. "Oh, isn't he/she sooo nice, blah, blah, blah" all the time, would make you sick.
Almost every bus driver that I had riding on a school bus was some sort of psychopath.
I had mostly good bus drivers. It was the (I don't even remember the word for it) assistants who were the most unbelievably vile, bitter women (it was always a woman) in existence.
You mean not in the seats?! Abuse! Neglect! Attempted murder! We need to find out if that WWII vet is still alive so that we can try him for his horrific crimes against children and have him brought to justice!
Why, if the bus had to make a sudden stop, the book could fly out of her hands and give dozens of other student paper cuts from all the pages. And if any kid is drinking lemonade, too, all bets are off...
I can see how it might be dangerous if the driver is reckless. You'd want to watch to make sure you braced yourself when he swerved.
That's what he meant, right?
Come on, have your ever ridden on a school bus with a driver who was not reckless? It takes at least a few brain cells to safely operate a bus and the brain cell pool among bus drivers is pretty shallow. Any time they're over 25 mph, you need to be very afraid.
A lawsuit filed this month by The American Civil Liberties Union could force Catholic charities to provide contraception and abortions for illegal immigrants in their care.
The ACLU is demanding government records detailing reproductive health care policies for immigrant children and teens in shelters operated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). The USCCB has been contracted by the federal government to care for the surge of unaccompanied minors crossing into the U.S.
The group claims that the USCCB has been denying reproductive care for immigrants based on its religious doctrines and that by doing so the organization is breaking the rules of its contract with the federal government to provide necessary health care for immigrants.
"The driver is the master of his vehicle....He is the best judge of what is appropriate." And after all, "Any object, be it a book, a toy or electronic device can be a potential danger when a young child drops an object and gets up to go get it while the bus is in motion."
Teaching children to be good little followers of capricious authority from a very young age, I see.
Along the same lines, someone posted this shit earlier about free range kids and it's amazing the lengths to which authoritarians will go to justify their authoritarianism.
Andy Sullivan, an East Silver Spring dad, recalls being at a playground a few years back, the Meitivs playing nearby, when an adult began yelling at the older Meitiv. "Suddenly he yells, 'Hey! I saw that! You just punched her in the face! Where's your mom and dad?' He was quite irate. Kid denies hitting his sister, adult insists?'Did not,' 'Yes you did'?and finally the adult says, 'I'm taking you home. Where do you live?' and marches them off." In Sullivan's view, "Bystanders are forced to step in and enforce discipline because the parents aren't around."
OH NO! He kind of hit his sister? No child has ever done that before without his parents seeing. How horrible.
The conflict, however, is that sometimes free-range kids will find themselves unattended in the company of parents who follow an entirely different style of parenting?parents who have no way of knowing what the kids' circumstances are.
If someone else follows a different parenting style, it's totally okay for them to call CPS and have your children kidnapped.
By that last bits logic, let's say I think kids should roam free but my neighbor keeps his kids inside all day and I think this is bad as it is contrary to my parenting style. So I break his window and let his kids out.
When I get in trouble, could I just say 'The conflict, however, is that stay at home kids will find themselves in a community with parents who follow an entirely different style of parenting - parents who have no way of knowing what the kids' circumstances are?'
OH NO! He kind of hit his sister? No child has ever done that before without his parents seeing. How horrible
But you see, it has happened. And that's why it's absolutely necessary that the state needs to watch these children every moment of their existence. People cannot be responsible. Only the STATE, the all knowing STATE can raise your kids properly and care for them.
I spent a lot of time with my youngest, hanging out and playing, etc. I half home schooled him for a couple of years in high school. Best thing I ever did.
When he was about 5 we were at the park, he and his buddy were playing with water guns. The water guns kept running out of water so eventually they were running around 'shooting' each other with an empty plastic water gun, and killing themselves laughing. Another little boy joined in. His Father was furious with me. He didn't let his children play with guns he said. This was in Canada, by the way, where guns are a huge no-no. I pointed out he isn't playing with a gun, he is playing with a piece of plastic that holds water so the Father needn't worry. Of course he didn't like that answer. He took his child away, lectured him earnestly, and got him playing with some nice young girls nearby. Within minutes the kid was back pretending to shoot my son and his friend with a small bent stick. The Dad got angry at me again. I laughed at him of course, which made him even angrier. He lectured his kid again, but the kid had gun brain and wanted only to play with my son. The end of the incident had the Dad telling me off with his son over his shoulder. He then marched off angrily while his son, perched on his shoulder, 'shot' everyone in the park all the way to their car.
I have a vision of this kid now, 23 years later being a gun nut and owning 7 machine guns and a bazooka.
I love that the school's defense of the bus driver is 'there's nothing wrong with reading a book and he had no really legitimate safety concerns, but children shouldn't backtalk because he is dictator and they must mindlessly follow his will.'
Really teaching some great thinking skills there, public school.
"[...]children shouldn't backtalk because he is dictator and they must mindlessly follow his will.'"
Well, it IS a gov't school and gov'ts survive and flourish on such sentiments. Hell, the city gov't of Boston had an entire city locked down for quite a while because of two thugs who had firearms.
Well, was the little scofflaw reading some of that non state sponsored propaganda? If so, it's a good thing that this heroic bus driver intervened before the youngster got bad ideas in his head about freedoms and toxic things like that.
During his contempt hearing for ignoring court orders when it came to his immigration enforcement, Joe Arpaio admitted he hired a private investigator to follow the Judge's wife around.
He might really be going to jail this time. I can't wait.

Were you not a kid? Do you not think that kids know who has the best gizmos regardless of whether they take them to school or not? When I was growing up, I couldn't afford that guy's 30-gal tropical fish tank and he didn't have to bring it to school for me to know that.
There may be reason to forbid them (such as avoiding some classroom distractions), but egalitarianism ain't one.
You disagree with my use of the word 'egalitarianism'. Fine.
When I was growing up, I couldn't afford that guy's 30-gal tropical fish tank and he didn't have to bring it to school for me to know that.
Having your poor dad be your little league baseball team's coach has some cache that a rich kid's dad who does not even show up to watch a game cannot match. But you know that.
"You disagree with my use of the word 'egalitarianism'."
No, I disagree that the ban has anything to do with faking the kids into thinking there is equality; the kids don't have to carry the goods for the other kids to know they have them.
It is a triumph of intent over results; a worthless regulation.
Outside of the cop misadventures and the fact that most of the press is yawning about Shrill's latest mendacity, there wasn't a whole lot in the news today.
Just finished a book on the Plantagenet/Tudor 'regime change'; not bad, and some good general comments on what even a non-voting population can do about a ruler who has lost the 'mandate of heaven' (and that quote alone makes it obvious the conditions are very global).
Oh, and the Giants kicked Dodger butt!
How's by you?
It sounds like a business decision. You want people comfortable enough to let you rummage around looking up their families and then telling you about the results on air.
If they find a particular "black sheep"* relative embarrassing and want you not to tell the public about it, that's fine so long as the program has a disclaimer to the effect that not ancestors are being disclosed, but only those whose disclosure the celebrity agrees to. So the viewer won't be fooled into thinking this is a hunt for embarrassing black sheep* celebrity relatives.
Surely Mclayn (close enough) has only royal ancestors! She knows, since she is the reincarnated form of them!
How come those reincarnated never had thieves or whores as ancestors? Maybe they didn't pay the church enough to get reincarnated!
If this bus driver had one less IQ point he could of been a cop. One more point and he could of been a US Senator. The great thing about death is you don't have to put with the stupidity forever. Someone should start a national campaign for retro-active abortions. And before someone suggest that maybe it is I who should be aborted, well to me it is a win win situation.

The keyword is "euthanized." Tidy, quiet, painless.
Stormfront, being more honest, would have called for enemies to be shot or gassed.
What astounds me here is the implicit assumption that once rid of the enemy, no more will spring up. A one time cleansing will forever solve problems.
They are incapable of seeing any reaction to their actions.

Which is why I pay for a cab if the Metro/MTR doesn't go where I'm going.
I will say that China wins between the two for traffic madness.

Wait, is this a Jeopardy answer? And, the question is... "You know else was a bus driver?"
Who is Nicolas Maduro?
I'll take Dictators who look like Saddam Hussein for 600, Alex.
Jackie Gleason?
I don't think he can read. He can just identify what a "book" is.

Cool! Mark Twain posts here.

What the crap are "free-range kids"? I thought free-range referred to farms or something.
Its how you get good kid meat nowadays. No hormones and plenty of exercise so you get lean, but not stringy, steaks.
They're kind of orange inside, not the pale yellow one normally sees nowadays.

Hmm...
The bus driver does not want his child passengers to read. Why? I'm going out a limb here. Because the children who read on the bus will sometimes get vertigo and vomit during the bus ride. Regulations prohibit storing a bag of cat litter on the bus that would make the driver's task of cleaning the mess up unnecessarily difficult. Thus, the driver prohibits reading.
Better prohibit use of phones and games as, um, potentially vertigo-inducing as well.
My school district won't allow K through 6 to carry cellular phones or electronic games to school. I think that's mostly standard and sensible.

In my opinion this is a rare, but sensible, deployment of egalitarianism. School is not the venue to get kids distracted by who has the best gizmos. I attended Roman Catholic schools growing up. The Sisters insisted on uniforms for all kids. This puts the wealthy and poor kids as equals in the class room. The rich and poor kids wear the same clothes, study the same subjects, and get graded as equals.
The measuring of skirt lengths to two inches above the knees puts ugly and pretty girls as equals too. OK, there's a problem with that.

Is this it?
Links After Dark?
Outside of the cop misadventures and the fact that most of the press is yawning about Shrill's latest mendacity, there wasn't a whole lot in the news today.
Just finished a book on the Plantagenet/Tudor 'regime change'; not bad, and some good general comments on what even a non-voting population can do about a ruler who has lost the 'mandate of heaven' (and that quote alone makes it obvious the conditions are very global).
Oh, and the Giants kicked Dodger butt!
How's by you?
Kicked butt? How's your ranking in the NL West?
Pretty horrible; losing 8 in a row will do that...
You don't wanna have the best record in the AL
Then every damn game turns into a brawl.
Oh, and I'm reading about Large Igneous Provinces right now. Fascinating, and yet it puts me to sleep at the same time.
Which one?

"The driver is the master of his vehicle....He is the best judge of what is appropriate."
LOL
The shorter version is you vill respect atorrity
Here's a dark link for you.
Man arrested for nothing ends up dead at the bottom of a pig pile.
Batman thought he was bad.
He was a fucking asshole in the first place.
He got knocked to the floor.
Dean Obeidallah now actually rivals Eric Liu for the title of "Most Insufferable Prick". The race has gotten interesting now. I wonder how Eric will claim the lead?
From the link:
"Seriously, who in their right mind would want to be tarnished by the sins of an ancestor you had no connection to other than a remote bloodline?"
Who, outside of some simply-minded proggy, would presume to BE tarnished by such information?
Many people are sensitive about their relatives.
This is a segue to a joke told about many celebrities as they try to cover up for their ancestors:
"In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed."

*racist!
not *all* ancestors are being disclosed.
Surely Mclayn (close enough) has only royal ancestors! She knows, since she is the reincarnated form of them!
How come those reincarnated never had thieves or whores as ancestors? Maybe they didn't pay the church enough to get reincarnated!
"Maybe they didn't pay the church enough to get reincarnated!"
Which church would that be?
Infected head.
Lovely.
Does this driver wear a helmet and lick windows while operating the bus?
