UVA Dean Maligned by Rolling Stone Received Death and Rape Threats, Hires Lawyer
Anyone wondering why the media is still talking about this debacle should peruse Nicole Eramo's letter.

Nicole Eramo, the UVA dean of students portrayed as the face of administrative neglect of rape victims in Rolling Stone's now-discredited story, revealed in a letter to the magazine's publisher that she received death and rape threats as a result of Sabrina Rubin Erdely's reckless reporting.
She has hired an attorney and may pursue legal action against the magazine, which has never really apologized for defaming her.
Her letter, written to Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, alleges that the magazine's representatives claimed as recently as February that Erdely's portrayal of Eramo was "fair." That's rather damning, if true; Rolling Stone should have had some idea by February that its fact-checking process had fundamentally failed and no aspect of the story was beyond reproach. And indeed, the police and Columbia investigations later determined that Eramo had directed Jackie to go the police, contrary to what Erdely wrote.
"I saw my name dragged through the mud in the national press, and have received numerous abusive, vitriolic, and threatening emails, letters, and phone calls," wrote Eramo in her letter. "Perhaps most egregious and shocking were the emails I received expressing hope that I be killed or raped, and commenting that they hoped I had a daughter so that she could be raped."
The Washington Post has the full letter; it can be read here.
It's not clear whether Eramo intends to sue Rolling Stone, though The Washington Post's Eugene Volokh has written that university officials, unlike the university itself, may have a case if they can prove that the magazine mischaracterized their statements.
Incidentally, anyone wondering why the media is still talking about this debacle should peruse Eramo's letter. A lot of people at UVA suffered as a direct result of Rolling Stone's entirely avoidable mistakes, and they deserve justice.

See? She got rape threats! RAPE KULTUR! RAPE KULTUR!
So, rape culture is created by the people who purportedly oppose it. Not too surprising.
It doesn't actually sound like she got any rape threats.
"Perhaps most egregious and shocking were the emails I received expressing hope that I be killed or raped, and commenting that they hoped I had a daughter so that she could be raped."
Um...yeah.
Damage done.
The left, as we've said multiple times this past week whether because of Oberlin, the revelations in Wisconsin or this story (as well as numerous other stories over the years), are pure evil.
Explains why they're winning too (for the most part).
Because evil will always triumph because good is dumb?
I thought it was because the good follow rules, thus hindering themselves.
I'm just repeating what Dark Helmet says.
Ah, my apologies. Good is dumb.
Wait, what about Oberlin now?
Where have you been?
At some point, "mistakes" become willful disregard for professional obligations and stray into the territory of gross negligence. Other professions, especially the ones that require malpractice or professional liability insurance, understand this.
You would think the whole Duke lacrosse debacle would have taught these assholes a lesson.
People's lives were completely changed because of it.
My guess is that you know of Wendy Murphy. On WRKO, in 2009, she proclaimed that "the real truth will come out" and Nifong will be haled as a hero.
Actually I don't! I started listening to WRKO in 2010 or 11!
She's a self-proclaimed "child rights advocate" attorney. She has been on the legal shows and from time to time you might see her on the regular cable shows, she has even appeared on O'Reilly.
I looked her up and found this:

Winner.
Although redmens called me mendacious earlier today, I hope you believe what I posted above about Ms. Murphy.
This article is hilarious.
Quoting Radley Balko:
You deserve to be banned for linking to Salon instead of just linking to the Reason article Salon quotes from.
It did. Lesson was: you get to fuck up the lives of people you dislike, and you suffer no consequences for it.
They also learned that actual courts of law have much more stringent rules about preponderance of evidence, presumption of guilt, etc. Why do you think the push has been to go with Kampus Kangaroo Kourts? Because they learned that they can't railroad people nearly as easily in the normal court system. Duke was a big part of that lesson.
Dude, the legal system is an oppressive tool of the Western patriarchal hegemony.
I wish these people would go live in one of the many countries of the world where it actually sucks to be a "non-privileged" person. If they ever made it back, they'd be worshiping American soil as soon as they got back.
Nah, they would just claim that they had more insight and understanding than everyone else.
They would still be privileged by their US citizenship. Then they'd not see what's in front of their nose, and come back with their prejudices reinforced.
All modern left are bastard offspring of Walter Duranty.
OT, but speaking of college: my wife's cousin just posted this:
"I almost did not go to my art history class today and decided I'd go... get there and the teacher is standing by herself. There was one other girl but she went to the bathroom. So awkward, spent the first 20 minutes talking about why no one comes to the class. I haven't been to her class for a week and I'd consider myself a regular. And I'm thinking, maybe because you said no midterm, no final and attendance isn't mandatory? haha"
I just...I... *sigh*
Tempted to hang onto this for the eventual post about the harsh job scene and/or student loan dept posts to come and quote it back to her.
*debt. I weren't no english major myself
"And I'm thinking, maybe because you said no midterm, no final and attendance isn't mandatory? haha"
Wait... what's their grade based on?
It's based on feelings.
Don't be absurd. It's based on a reverse privilege scale.
Is this at UNC?
Ha, no, freakin HI of course. If I'm not mistaken she's wrapping up her senior year (and OBTW spent last semester in Spain doing fuck all on someone's dime). My guess is she'll remain at her current job in classy smoke shop or whatever after graduation. This'll be morbidly fun to watch...
huh. It's almost as if incentives matter.
she received death and rape threats
Somebody learned the hard way what SJWs are really about.
Realize that one of the nastiest aspects of the whole gender/race/sexuality/etc identity movement is that it formally states that it is against things like hate and intolerance and the like, but that's complete and total bullshit. All it is is about redefining who it's ok to do those things to. And what its practitioners do is really, really go FULL HATE when they can because their ideology restricts them so much in what they are supposed to be able to hate. Plus the kind of people drawn to this shit are usually quite hateful and angry and envious in the first place, so they have a lot of hate to express and limited targets to do it against.
So as soon as they are given a green light to hate--like towards this woman here--many of them go absurdly, intensely overboard, because they're chomping at the bit to do so. I mean, just look at the seething, burning hate and anger that radiates from these people when they're being "civil". What are they like when they decide they don't have to be civil? Oh, just like this story, that's how.
Not about changing human behavior so much as it is about changing human nature for them. It's a fool's errand and the more they fail, the angrier and nastier they get. What started out as well intentioned, albeit misguided, attempts at improving the world is replaced with a primal desire to see the other suffer. Ends up with violence given people don't like getting fucked with. As Twain said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes."
Well, I think there's another aspect to it as well. As you state, this may have started out as something well-intentioned but misguided. But as soon as it gained any power, any traction, the worst possible people were now going to be drawn to it, because that is an iron law. If you create a position of power or influence, the worst possible people for that position will gravitate to it. And they will increasingly supplant anyone who isn't the worst possible person, until pretty much the only people in the positions are the worst* possible people to have there.
That's why they just continuously get worse and worse and nastier and nastier.
* Not Nicole worst
As you state, this may have started out as something well-intentioned but misguided. But as soon as it gained any power, any traction, the worst possible people were now going to be drawn to it...
It was never well intentioned.
It was always about power. They may have initially thought they could rule with a softer whip. But, make no mistake. Ruling was what they had on their mind from the outset. And the whip was never far from their hand.
Yep: identity politics/privilege theory are really just an "adult" version of tween clique rivalry; they simply aim to determine the "winners" in zero-sum power struggles, and automatically assume bad faith on the part of anyone outside one's own clique.
And to further your point...
"Perhaps most egregious and shocking were the emails I received expressing hope that I be killed or raped, and commenting that they hoped I had a daughter so that she could be raped."
These people are pure evil.
They're clearly not opposed to rape, at least when it happens to someone they don't like. But we already knew that considering the blind eye that is turned to prisons.
It's becoming almost a universal constant: the more someone talks about/obsesses over/relentlessly focuses on something that affects others, the more likely it is that they already have constant, almost assuredly nasty thoughts about that subject already. This is just how they get to obsess about it without seeming creepy as hell (until you scratch the surface, like here).
I linked it below to Rufus, but you'd think the death of Robespierre would learn them a little learnin. Nope, they just repeat.
They're very, very stupid. They're basically operating on animal instinct--hate, envy, fear, dominance--and thinking isn't really in their wheelhouse.
OR
What Hyperion says below.
What difference, at this point, etc.
She has hired an attorney and may pursue legal action against the magazine, which has never really apologized for defaming her.
All this proves is that given the chance, many in the private sector will act just like the public sector. Circle the wagons, never admit to any wrongdoing.
Based on what little I know from my reading of the matter, if I were representing Rolling Stone, I would try to convince them to sincerely apologize to this woman and, within reason, try to make amends. It could even be a way to re-make and re-purpose the rag.
I'm betting their lawyers crafted the non-apology from Rolling Stones, Erdley's rather lengthier non-apology, and are now begging everyone involved to admit no wrongdoing except for caring just too much
"Perhaps most egregious and shocking were the emails I received expressing hope that I be killed or raped, and commenting that they hoped I had a daughter so that she could be raped."
The tolerant left on full display, once again. They're standing up against this rape culture and if you don't agree with everything they say, they're going to rape you!
These people are pure evil and must be stopped before they destroy what good is left in this country.
I like your anger!
Yes, they anger me every bit as much as do cops and soldiers.
...Rolling Stone should have had some idea by February that its fact-checking process had fundamentally failed and no aspect of the story was beyond reproach.
According to what they told Columbia, they had a pretty good idea as soon as various journalists (including this one from Reason) started raising red flags. The magazine no doubt tempered its apologies based on what the attorneys were preparing them for, which is a slew of inevitable lawsuits.
Rolling Stone should change its name to Throwing Stone Magazine.
And the editorial staff should be dubbed "the glass house".
Rolling Stone...a Billy Joel allusion...I like it. It would be even better if Rolling Stone panned Glass Houses when it came out.
I love rolling stone just the way it is.
Scandal-ridden, embarrassed, and still boring?
A crony-statist rag?
You may be right!
How does it feel to be one of the eggs in a yummy, fluffy progressive omelette? I realize I'm a dick, but I'm having a hard time not hearing this as, "How could you do this to ME? I'm on your side."
Compartmentalization.
They're ideological cannibals.
They eat their own.
Gotta love retribution.
Is there any doubt the reactionary Jacobin gene runs through their evil veins?
How does it feel to be one of the eggs in a yummy, fluffy progressive omelette? I realize I'm a dick, but I'm having a hard time not hearing this as, "How could you do this to ME? I'm on your side."
They've been warned about what they are creating. It comes time, they have to lie in the bed that they made. Only I don't want to lie in it with them. That being said, I'm afraid I have to agree that being a dick at this point is pretty much the only thing left.
As a matter of fact, Rolling Stone accomplished the difficult task of making me sympathize with a university bureaucrat.
Who knows if she's done bad things at other times? She wasn't accused of those other occasions - she was falsely accused in a case where she actually did the right thing - encourage the complainant to report her claims to the real-world police.
I don't know, maybe she cares about the University enough to try to act sanely enough that students won't run away and therefore endanger her job.
It's pretty unbelievable that these loons are actually getting University admins to shill for them, acting against their own best interests, and the best interests of the organization. But they're surely going to regret it. This won't be an isolated case. You cannot let insane people dictate policy for you and just run amok fucking up your organization and ruining your reputation.
They always eat their own, eventually. You can't stir up that much hatred and vitriol and expect to control it. A riot is an ugly thing...
...unt it's about time ve hat van?
I've been saying for a while now on this site, that's it's almost unbelievable that these people do not seem to have the self awareness that at some point, this shit is going to blow up in their faces.
They're historically illiterate. You and I know the long history of people like this running amok They think the constitution was written a hundred years ago and that Reagan was in office during WWII..
Honestly, the same thing has occurred to me.
I dont' know about that--we have no evidence that Eramo was ever involved in witch hunts against accused rapists, or doing anything other than providing counsel and support to alleged rape victims. In this case, she encouraged the accuser to go to the police, which is exactly what she should have done. I don't see how Eramo brought any of this on herself.
It's been lost in the hoopla, perhaps by design, but has there been any followup to the serial rapist and murderer who was employed by UVA's when he abducted, raped and killed his latest victim?
I think he was implicated in at least 5 disappearances of young women in the past 10 years, but there've been something like 14 women gone missing in Central VA since 2000. Is anyone still looking into this?
Between punishing the frat named (but exonerated), then attacking the entire Greek system, then going to a CA-style consent rule, it's almost as if the university is trying to hide its own culpability in a pretty basic failing. You know, don't put serial killers on the payroll.
Employed by UVA's Hospital. Only a couple stories on him in March. None in April.
Psst...he's black...we don't talk about those kind of rapists.
Anti-rape activists threaten to rape woman. It's almost like they don't believe half the things they claim to believe.
Social Justice Warriors have no problem turning on their own.
Example: The Honey Badgers and Calgary Expo.
Ah, the thoughtful social justice warriors wishing rape upon women who aren't sufficiently deferential to rape accusers. No better way to fight the "rape culture", eh?
Don't these people at least have some part of their brain that says "you know, it might make sense to wait for the facts to come out before I commit to making a death threat. It's just possible that my death threat will be unjustified, then I would be quite the fool!"
I think it's vengeance and revenge all the way down.
Publish the emails and names of people making threats. Make them pay a price in scorn and ridicule. It should be especially effective if those making the threats are SJWs as seems likely in this case.
