Interview with Christina Hoff Sommers: Safe Spaces and the Illiberal Mob at Oberlin
The appeal to safety is just the latest vehicle for shutting down debate on campus

"It was so over the top'"it was pure performance art."
That was feminist scholar Christina Hoff Sommers' take on the student-activists who prefaced her talk at Oberlin College on Monday with an appeal for anyone who felt unsafe to seek sanctuary in the designated "safe space."
Why would students have had cause to feel unsafe? What was so threatening to their physical and mental well-being? Was there an axe murderer wandering the campus that evening? No, just Sommers'"a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute known for expressing classically-liberal, freedom-inclined views on gender issues.
Sommers visited Oberlin to talk about her brand of feminism. The event drew protests and furious denunciations from far-left students, who penned an op-ed for The Oberlin Review accusing Sommers of being a "rape denialist" and promoting a cycle of violence against women. That article is here (note the trigger warning):
Content Warning: This letter contains discussion of rape culture, online harassment, victim blaming and rape apologism/denialism.
Dear community members:
The Oberlin College Republicans and Libertarians are bringing Christina Hoff Sommers to speak on Monday, April 20. This Monday happens to be a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which makes the timing of this talk particularly objectionable. Though OCRL advertised Christina Hoff Sommers as a feminist with a "perspective that differs from the general Oberlin population," they failed to mention that she is a rape denialist. A rape denialist is someone who denies the prevalence of rape and denies known causes of it. Christina Hoff Sommers believes that rape occurs less often than statistics (those which actually leave out a plethora of unreported rapes) suggest.
The entrance to the classroom where Sommers spoke was surrounded by flyers accusing her of supporting rapists. "Fuck anti-feminists," read one sign.
The students responsible for the safe space were more polite, although they did joke about biting people they disagreed with and promised to zealously guard their precious space from "toxic, dangerous, and/or violent" people'"anyone who didn't share their perspective, in other words. (Video of that here, courtesy of Nick Mascari, Third Base Politics).
Sommers told Reason that the most bizarre form of protest was the students who sat in the front row during her talk with their mouths taped shut.
"They just stared," she said.
Others did more than stare; they interrupted and booed whenever Sommers said something that irked them. At one point, a philosophy professor in the audience stood up and called for civility. They mocked him and yelled at him to sit down, according to Sommers.
Still, she was able to handle the crowd and give her talk. Afterward, some of the hecklers followed her to the restaurant where she was dining with the students who had brought her to campus, and they had a mostly friendly discussion, she said.
Sommers thinks at least some of the students who heard her speak were surprised to learn that she wasn't the monster the activists had made her out to be.
"My talk is liberal: pro-women, pro-feminism, pro-social-justice," she said. "I bet a lot of people in that room agreed with me."
But many others were somehow convinced that Sommers' presence was making them unsafe. Ironically, the campus police reached the opposite conclusion: if anyone was unsafe, it was Sommers. Thus, she was given a police escort during her time at Oberlin.
The appeal to safety is just the latest vehicle for shutting down debate on campus, according to Sommers.
"People are always eager to censor and to find new excuses, and this is original, that it undermines your personal safety and subjects you to panic attacks to hear a dissident opinion," she said.
But students may increasingly feel entitled to this pernicious kind of security'"protection from new ideas. That's because university administrations have less and less choice but to oblige them, thanks to the Office for Civil Rights' curious interpretation of Title IX, which seems to be providing legal cover for a modern-day Spanish Inquisition.
That's the really scary thing.
Watch Sommers' recent talk at Georgetown University here.*
*Update: This link is a video of Sommers' similar talk at Georgetown last week. I initially identified this as her Oberlin talk.

If you stood there as one of those claiming that this speaker on the campus was some sort of unsafe thing....you have branded yourself as someone who should never be seriously considered for employment, responsibility or to even have the ability to consider a new idea.
"or to even have the ability to consider a new idea."
SUCCESS!!
/progtards
New-speak exists in order to boil everything down to a simple good/bad label.
This enables those in charge to simultaneously remove independent decision making regarding people/ideas and to be able to make people switch on a dime regarding a person or idea .
In this instance the left labeled Christina as an "anti-feminist" and a "rape-denier", never mind that she is neither of these, these things are bad and since she was labeled as such she is doubleplusungood .
Real positions and nuanced perspectives no longer are understood by the next generation. It is entirely about pre-defined labels and who gets to apply those labels. What is truly scary is those who best fit this definition are all at the "best schools" and being groomed for positions of power, this generation is just waiting to put everyone who disagrees with them on a train.

Fine, we'll concede that this sort of employment is within the wheelhouse of someone offended by a campus speaker.
With a BA from Oberlin, they're unqualified for employment in any industry except academia and the SPLC anyways.

You left those out.
No. The Kochs are huge donors to PBS. No self-respecting SJW would work there.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!
That's a LOT of money for the same "education" you could get by re-reading the Communist Manifesto and watching MSNBC for a year.
I don't think these idiots have read the Communist Manifesto. They missed a 1984 reference.
Pretty much all of the commies/socialists I know have never read Marx or Engels.
I read The Communist Manifesto but couldn't deal with the negative waves of Das Kapital, man.
I wonder how many of the enrolled rail against the rich and tell people with money to 'check their privilege.'
Nobody expects the Office for Civil Rights' interpretation of Title IX.
Auto-da-fe. What's an auto-da-fe?
It's what you oughtn't to do but you do anyway.
There's one area where the Office for Civil Rights is ruthlessly efficient: screwing over anyone not fanatically devoted to political correctness.
They should strike until they get really nice uniforms, though.
And comfy chairs?
And a big comfy couch:

These loons are a great example of positive feddback, increasing their isolation from reality so much that they are only suited for acadamia; soon the only people taking their classes will be their successors.
They are beyond "beyond parody". I had always thought the "safe spaces" were just allegorical, but apparently they are real things, with minders. These clowns wouldn't last 5 minutes in a real job. I'm surprised they can even manage to shop for clothes, what with all the mirrors and cashiers micro-aggressing them.
Watch the video where the two human beings who's choice of personal gender identification I do not know, tell people how they are "pretty cool" at the end. Yep, beyond parody.
"two human beings who's choice of personal gender identification I do not know"
That would be bulldagger.
Except these clowns tend to work in HR and make up rules to accommodate their neuroses.
Just wait till they get Liz Warren in the white house, they'll make the whole country Oberlin-graudate-friendly, and therefore hostile to everyone else.
Gee, I wonder how the school administration would have responded if the OCRL's had behaved this way to, say, Bill Ayers, or a former Obama administration flunky, or Toni Morrison?
Gee, I wonder how the school administration would have responded if the OCRL's had behaved this way to, say, ...... Toni Morrison?
I assume that they would have ordered a black pig to shoot a white teenager in the back.
That is the most dumbfounding part of the whole thing.
They probably share the same phone booth.
It's a single organization.
Wow.
There was one college which refused to recognize a student conservative club because there was already a Republican club.
Can the merged organization at Oberlin be a result of a similar administrative ruling - the two groups had to merge?
I assumed it was because there were probably about five of them total, but who knows.
Were any of them women, I wonder?
Why are you forcing your gender norms on them, you othering bastard?
They can be women if they want to.
Leave my parental status out of this, you other othering individual (who I am certain is otherwise very special and very important in her/his/xe own unique idiom.
*tears up and tramples what looked to be a given-at-birth "Privileged Cis-Gender" card*
The Oberlin College Republicans and Libertarians
Like the Landover Baptist Church, peopled with unfunny "satirists" whose sense of "satire" involves slapstick lampoonery that is too obvious to pass satirical muster. Sorta like the Onion.
Reason always seems to ignore the real money quotes from these ridiculous campus activist articles. Here's the important part:
"We're never going to get what we need from Christina Hoff Sommers or her Twitter followers, so let's pull together and take care of each other. SHE CAN PRIORITIZE DEBUNKING STATISTICS ON SEXUALIZED VIOLENCE; let's prioritize each other healing from and refusing to tolerate violence. Her talk is happening, so let's pull together in the face of this violence and make our own space to support each other." - Emphasis added.
In other words, we'll leave it to our opponents to actually look at the evidence and statistics, we're too busy cuddling each other and adding letters to the end of LGBTQQIAZFLMBOQWERTY.
Data is a tool of the cis-hetero shitlord oppressors, Irish. Duh.
Too similar to "daddy", and it reminds them of that cis-Star Trek show, which was racist and slavery towards Androids and against iDroids, and Apple has a gay CEO, and, and ... and?
Statistics are for mansplainers
Like, um, we need you to explain that... duh!
Whatevs, Mister Man.
/the imaginary Oberlin student/strawperson I just invented
I especially love that they use the word 'debunking' which my computer dictionary assures me means: "expose the falseness or hollowness of."
So they're basically admitting she's 'exposed the falseness' of statistics on sexualized violence, but they're too illiterate to realize it.
Dude, you can't be one of these venal fucks without being stupid. They may be ill-made, spiteful little creatures full of envy, lust, and low cunning, but they're not smart.
Someone smart would figure out a less pathetic, moronic, and loser-y way of getting a little power.
Losers have gotten real good at getting power through exactly these tactics....

You need a college that costs $50,001 a year to get to that level of reading comprehension. $50K just doesn't cut it.
Goes to Google...
Holy fuck, Oberlin tuition is basically $50k.
Boggles. The. Mind.
My favorite is how the rape the word "violence". How exactly a middle aged women author giving a talk at a university "violence" is a mystery to all but the uninitiated I guess.
It's as if they'd invited a Nazi or a Republican - you wouldn't want someone like that on campus, would you?
/sarc, just in case that wasn't clear
Violence == Evil in their lexicon because evil is too loaded with judgement for them to use it.
Civilly presented opposing viewpoints are the closest thing to violence these spoiled twits will ever know. This is just the left wing flavor of affluenza.
In their culture the word "violence" has been redefined to "anything I disagree with being shown to me".
The only way speaking is violence is if you're Black Canary.
"...and refusing to tolerate violence." What does this even mean? Violence is part of human nature. Being intolerant of violence won't make it go away.
The words they say are not meant to make sense. They're meant to be a word salad of "good" things that no "good" person would ever disparage. It's sleight of hand, meant to distract the unobservant and the stupid with soothing words, while meaning nothing as they behave the opposite.
Most things these people say fit the category of Noam Chomsky's example of a grammatically correct but semantically nonsensical sentence: "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously."
No, it's more of an Orwellian Newspeak thing: continually redefine terms to fit their agenda of empowering themselves and hobbling their opponents. E.g.: "racism" now means something that only white people can do, "violence" means disagreeing with a leftist position, etc.
When Professor Irwin Corey fell out of favor, Professor Noam Chomsky was there and ready to step up to the dais, pontificating in huge clouds of smoke that sound impressive to people who've never been critical thinkers.
How can you make fun of these people? They're refusing to tolerate violence. Could you say the same about yourself!?
I refuse to tolerate violence every day. I have a 1 year old who needs civilizing.
Your last sentence made me guffaw and almost spit out my tea. Thank you!
I have found the best course is to avert your gaze while in the process of drinking. It can be messy and costly to do otherwise.
My fave was the phrase about "group care." I still don't even know wtf "self care" is.
Look you stupid fucking hussy, if you were less riddled with the sick, gangrenous rot of internalized misogyny (doubtlessly picked up from the Outraged White Man Brigade you choose to associate with) you'd realize there's nothing narcissistic about writing a 'love letter to ourselves' which constantly talks about the need for self care.
I might be into self care. Who knows? I mean, are we talking like, a spa day here? Because I could go for a fucking spa day.
*sighs*
Nicole, I'm not here to educate you and refuse to allow you to enact my labor. Why don't you google it?
Oh, boy, those phrases. I just love how people have managed to make their utter refusal to substantiate their claims into a moral stance.
Let us ponder the following:
"moral stances are subjective and thus useless as a basis for the behavior of multicultural populations, all the cool kids are following legally enforceable shared ethical guidelines derived from compromise these days."
- a poster from beyond this link: http://drownedinsound.com/comm.....ic/4271502
I offer a fucking spa day at my home. I offer group rates.
I'm not that into self care, but sometimes I can't find an escort on short notice so I have to resort to it.
Never tried group care before... but I may be curious.
Uh, Nicole, come on. It means FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP
Pull together in the face of what violence? Words? Words you disagree with are violence to these douchenozzles? Un-fucking-believable. Someone should kick the shit out of them to show them what real violence is like.
Once words are classified as "verbal violence" they open the door to outlaw them. They have already argued that being exposed to "verbal violence" induces harmful psychological stress (studies say).
Which means that in a few years once there may well be a serious movement to put you in prison for for assault if you argue that fewer than 1 in 5 women are raped, because you are "psychologically abusing" your interlocutor.
Words you disagree with are violence to these douchenozzles?
Wait a minute. Now I get it. Michael Hihn graduated from Oberlin?
His name is derived from the German word for chicken (or "hen"), or Huhn. Just thought it seemed relevant.
So what are these delicate flowers majoring in? What possible line of work are they preparing themselves for?
Grievance Mongering. Sorry, "community organizing."
"Diversity training." And, of course, government.
Why, they're all going to be Navy Seals! And then on to the White House! The Great Leaders of Tomorrow!!!
They don't have an Engineering or Business school... I'm guessing they are learning to make awesome Mochachinos in the morning and Mojitoes in the evening.
Don't do that. Don't mock coffee and cocktail craft.
A good bartender is a valuable thing!
It's a small liberal arts college, not a university. Of course they don't have an engineering or business school.
Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, even Swathmore has a small engineering department.
It's not that crazy.
Well, she was booed when she said that the wage gap could be closed if more women would major in something useful instead of sociology.
She was engaging in victim-blaming. It is indisputable that poor people are poor not because of bad decisions on their part but because of conspiracies against them.

My water treatment plant designs are only as useful as an op-ed on Bruce Jenner.

Oberlin has a really strong music program. And a really strong physics department, but I doubt too many of the attendees are majoring in physics.
NGOs love fuckers like these. Government agencies, too. Then you can just hop between the two as you see fit.
Plus, for the choicest derps, there's academia. New generation isn't gonna indoctrinate itself.
Also, trust funds. Can't forget trust funds.
Also, trust funds. Can't forget trust funds.
I can see it now in a mini-TED-lecture concerning career paths for children of privilege currently sitting in 9th grade at Howyadoin Prep:
"For the perfect combination in social engineering work, get an Oberlin degree and have no experience fending for yourself in the world. In this way, your insights are superior and worthy of dictatorial pronouncement."
Work is a hetero cis-normative concept invented by the PATRIARCHY asshole.
Once again, these people are just engaging in mob bullying. They usually engage in it online using social media, but they did it in meatspace here. Do you think a single one of these people would have done this if they were the only one doing it? They're cowards who want to bully people who they disagree with, and they only get "brave" enough to do it when they are part of a mob. They're pathetic loser scum who figured out that joining with other pathetic loser scum gives them far more power than they could ever have as a single pathetic loser scumbag.
But many others were somehow convinced that Sommers' presence was making them unsafe. Ironically, the campus police reached the opposite conclusion: if anyone was unsafe, it was Sommers.
Every single thing these people claim or state can be reversed and there is your actual truth. it's literally how they work.
But they are so weak they cannot even do bullying right.
"Hey lets sit silently with our mouths taped shut! That will show that tool of the Patriarchy!"
*facepalm*
That's why they form a mob. Even retarded shitheads become dangerous when they form a mob.
Not when they don't own firearms. I could introduce this mob to the business end of my Sig 516 if you need a demo.
How do you like your Sig? Is it piston or the traditional Stoner gas-impingement?
Love it. It's piston. Sig M400 is DI if that's your preference.
I have an S&W MP15. Bought the base model right when it came out for like $850 with a mind to customize (which I've done to limited degree). Like it a lot and I've never had a failure to feed or eject but I like the higher tolerance for fouling that the piston design offers. Then again, with how little I fire the damn thing it's probably a problem I'll never encounter with just basic cleaning.
I think a Springfield M1 or the Remington R25 are next on the list.
I really want a m1a. I can't justify another rifle really. I haven't shot in about 2 years. I've got the itch, just not the time.
Yeah, that's why I'm leaning towards the R25. My 700 is back in Virginia so I don't have a hunting rifle here in Texas and the R25 neatly straddles that target and hunting line.
Ah, the rationalizations we go through to add to the collection...
I just bought an FN FiveseveN, which I've coveted for a while.
Haven't got out to shoot it yet, but looking forward to it.
Assault weapon in pistol format. Shoots cop killer bullets. What is not to love.
I like the 5.7 but you can't get the bullets it was designed for because, BAN IT!
No, they form mobs to reach their peak level of retarded shitheadedness. Just remember, the average IQ of a mob is equal to the IQ of its least intelligent member, divided by the log of the number of people in said mob.
Dangerous just by weight alone? Smell?
Of course, they soak up a lot of time and resources...so maybe they are a form of parasitic danger?!
That's one way to describe it. These dipshits are the ones who will be deciding how our taxes get spent in a decade or two. This is how bureaucrats are made. Or rather, how sentient being are unmade into bureaucrats.
That's one way to describe it. These dipshits are the ones who will be deciding how our taxes get spent in a decade or two. This is how bureaucrats are made. Or rather, how sentient being are unmade into bureaucrats.
They're voting. They're already deciding how our taxes are spent.
But once they're bureaucrats, they;ll be deciding regardless of who anyone votes for.
"Even retarded shitheads become dangerous when they form a mob."
It's in the genes:

Generally, sitting with your mouth taped shut is meant as a protest *against* censorship, not *for* censorship. But in their inverted reality, dissent = repression.
Good catch - what they did there makes absolutely no sense.
Perhaps they should have worn the tape over their ears? That would be more telling.
Much harder to get the tape off later. That might actually be painful.
Good.
That would have been an awesome point for Sommers to make during her speech, as the only reference to the protestors.
I'll say this much for mobs such as this: they changed my attitude on 2nd Amendment from "Americans are insane for having this in their Constitution" to "Rest of the world is insane for not having an equivalent."
I came to that conclusion living in Europe and having a vague understanding of European history. I was never anti-gun, but living amongst people who are so fucking delusional about arms and the nature and history of those they trust with them really made me appreciate the 2nd Amendment.
Also, yeah, the fact that the left has become completely unhinged from reality and openly indulges dark, violent fantasies makes me appreciate firearms ownership all the more.
I'll say this much for mobs such as this: they changed my attitude on 2nd Amendment from "Americans are insane for having this in their Constitution" to "Rest of the world is insane for not having an equivalent."
Every single thing these people claim or state can be reversed and there is your actual truth. it's literally how they work.
They're masters of the art of projection.
Every single thing these people claim or state can be reversed and there is your actual truth. it's literally how they work.
They're masters of the art of projection.
They got nuthin on the squirrels!
I would say that these schools need to start teaching basic logic, but I suspect it's a lost cause, pearls before swine and all that. Besides, logic is no doubt considered a tool of Teh Evul Patriarchy.
The most painful thing to me is that these pathetic jerkoffs actually expect me to show them respect, as though they're functioning adults. They at least have to get past the thumbsucking phase before I'll consider it.
Logical fallacies are a Western concept, therefore forbidden. Needs more feels.
Sadly, people actually believe this sort of thing.
Logic, along with grammar and rhetoric, is part of the trivium, you know, the cornerstone of the liberal arts.
Quit othering them. Next you'll say that as a predominantly English speaking and writing institution, being familiar with the works that historical writers read would be helpful. We could have a moderate list of Canonical books it helps to be familiar with.
Now that's just crazy talk!
I would say they need to start pulling funding from these schools. Taxpayers should not be paying for this nonsense. I have become firmly convinced that, outside of the STEM fields at least, there should be no public funding, no scholarships. They can waste their time with their own money.
I agree with this. But I believe Oberlin is private.
Pearls are only for clutching, not casting.
My brain feels unsafe, I'll leave it behind when I visit Oberlin, just like these students.
Does anyone else immediately envision an eight year old with their hands clapped over their ears chanting "LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-I-CAN'T-HEAR-YOU" when you read about how these precious daffodils are threatened?
What's amazing is that ridiculing them doesn't faze them. At all. You're mocking them right now for being little crybabies and it would pass right over their heads. They suffer zero embarrassment about being this cowardly and weak. How do you deal with someone like that?
In a normal world? Make them go earn a living. Unfortunately, these are the same people attacking the concept of "earn."
Yeah, but don't you see? These people are the losers of society, in their way. At least within their middle-to-upper-middle-class world, they are losers. They're lazy, they're stupid, they're frequently ugly, they're unambitious. Within the framework of their society, they suck. Of course they attack all the common basic societal elements that define them as losers. Because they delusionally believe that these are just constructs that can be torn down, and not things that are based on much more core elements of nature, like being successful because you are ambitious and try, or because you are smart, etc.
Rather than change themselves to work within the natural structure, they want to change the structure to reward the way they are. Of course, the fact that they think they can do this is another example of how bonecrushingly stupid and pathetic they are. But man, they can still manage to be SUPER annoying.
Many of them are probably hopeless. But it's also good to remember that they are also young people, who probably had pretty privileged and sheltered upbringings and who have been told that stupid, pointless activism is what you do at college. Many are probably blowing their chance of getting a useful education, but they have a whole life ahead of them.
I think there is some reason to believe that many of them, when confronted with actual reality, will change how they look at the world and get a bit more in touch with reality.
For the sake of a cousin I love dearly, I hope you're right, Zeb.
If I recall correctly, a number of people on here were silly leftists in college and managed to get better.
Maybe it is getting even more absurd now, but it's not like shrill campus activism is a new thing.
Several people I knew in college (and that is getting to be a fairly long time ago) who were all into the SJW activism stuff are now working for oil companies. Most people grow up eventually.
Zeb, Jesus, to track you down.
Yes, I used a 'generous' definition of Luddite. It was my point. But more importantly...MUSTARD (or Dijon) is more than appropriate for a club sandwich!!
/crosses arms. Lifts chin.
You know what? I just want everyone to be happy, so do what you will with the club sandwich.
I'm finding politics awfully depressing lately, so I have to take a break sometimes and pick on people for their word usage and condiment preferences.
I have a brother who went to Oberlin. He's more or less a libertarian now.
I have a cousin who attended Oberlin. His father-in-law showed up to the pre-wedding softball game in a Bentley, so my cousin will probably be fine.
Ah, so he just went to Oberlin to get his MR degree and will now live the luxurious life of a trophy husband.
In all seriousness, I almost went to Oberlin. Glad I didn't. I would never have converted, mind you; I was already better read than the average college graduate when I was 17 so I found the humanities classes to be remedial and boring; but I probably would have reacted so hard against those pricks that if I did go there, I would be a thorough-going right wing Republican by senior year. I'd be reading de Maistre and Juan Donoso Cortes and voting for Santorum probably. I am indeed a spiteful person.
My daughter went to Oberlin, graduated in music performance. (scholarship lightened my costs) Yeah, not much demand for trumpet players so she's working on a MS in Public Admin now at a state school.
I know a number of former Oberlin students. Most were mildly to extremely progressive. All were very intelligent. Some got double degrees and are earning 6 figures before their 25th birthday.
The sport at Oberlin seemed to be trying to out-do your friends with the most outrageous stunt. Bicycling across America. Living a month in the woods. Hiking alone in the Grand Canyon in January. Founding a women's music group in Saudi Arabia.
Does being a feminist sitting in front of a guest speaker feminist with duct tape over one's mouth count as a stupid Oberlin stunt?
How do you deal with someone like that?
Bring in ISIS for a reality check?
OK, so:
"Content Warning: This letter contains discussion of rape culture, online harassment, victim blaming and rape apologism/denialism."
What's the warning about the words in the Content Warning? I mean if words can harm you, how do you warn against the harmful words without using them?
One of my Monty Python records* started out with a warning that "this record contains the words [list of bad words], but since they only occur in this introduction, you're past them now."
*A record was a large disk which you put in a special reader, and a needle translated bumps in the grooves on the disk into sound...well, it's hard to explain
Maybe it was a cassette tape. You see, a cassette tape was a rectangular object filled with a special ribbon, well, sort of, it was kind of spooled, and you put it in a machine, and, heck with it...
Eddie, I've still got these flat plastic discs with scratches on them, so my lawn? Get off!

Coeus posted this ridiculous shit yesterday.
"Don't compare physicist Ph.D.s with elementary school teachers with a Bachelors; compare technicians with school teachers with equivalent degrees. Compare engineers and sociologists. What you will find almost uniformly across the board is that professions with a preponderance of women are less valued than professions with a majority of men. And that makes no sense. Why do we pay a woman who has a Master's degree in sociology far less than a man who has an engineering degree, when both have invested the same amount in their education and are working just as hard in an important job?
It really is a self-perpetuating stereotype, too. There are fewer women in physics than in biology, and I have been told in all seriousness that that means that biology is "easier" than physics, and that physics must be a more serious discipline. It's the same with teaching: there is this common attitude that elementary school teaching is women's work, because it involves nurturing children. Never mind that teaching is very hard work, and that those school teachers have a greater role to play in shaping the next generation of our culture than any academic physicist ? screw 'em, they're only doing it because they couldn't cut it at any other job. So I do complain that there is a physicist-teacher wage gap: the teachers deserve more."
^ When someone is this fucking stupid, what are you even supposed to do? When a man refuses to acknowledge that engineers are paid more than sociologists for very obvious reasons, what can sway him from his self-evidently ridiculous position?
Well the female sociologist spent time getting a Masters degree...while Lebron James has no degree....so why are we paying him way more?????????????????
Why do we pay a woman who has a Master's degree in sociology far less than a man who has an engineering degree, when both have invested the same amount in their education and are working just as hard in an important job
Wait a minute. I knew PZ was a dipshit, but he believes in the labor theory of value???
It's a guest blog from some dipshit named Jonathan Mann.
Of course, Myers let it be posted on his blog, but all that shows is that he doesn't proof read very well, not necessarily that he endorses everything being said.
PZ is an exceptional dipshit, and what makes it even worse is he's not stupid. He's just pandering to the SJW's because he likes the attention.
PZ Myers = Hugo Schwyzer = White Knight
"Hey, I'm gonna get laid by hating on men. Women find that sexy! I can't lose!"
Funny. The labor theory of value, like the belief that behavioral differences between men and women are 'socially constructed' rather than biological, are both just as asinine as creationism. And yet, all these leftists at that blog who's raison d'etre is complaining about creationism appear to believe in both of the former views. So much for intelligentsia.
Never mind that teaching is very hard work
What an absolute crock of shit. If teaching was hard work, most teachers would be doing something else.
He doesn't understand how pay is decided upon. There are tons of variables including difficulty, potential danger, the number of people with a skill vs. the demand for that skill, etc.
I'll grant that it is hard work. At least for those that give a shit. The teachers I know personally work quite hard. But it also includes lots of vacation and often comes with good benefits and pension. There is plenty of incentive to stick with it even if you have to work hard. And people do actually like the job in many cases.
You became a teacher just so that you could use the Board of Education on slim young boys, didn't you?
Not me. I thought about teaching, but decided it wasn't worth the aggravation.
Instead I pretend to be an engineer.
Instead I pretend to be an engineer.
*looks around, hopes Zeb had nothing to do with the construction of the building*
Does that mean you're an industrial engineer?
"Why do we pay a woman who has a Master's degree in sociology far less than a man who has an engineering degree, when both have invested the same amount in their education and are working just as hard in an IMPORTANT job?"
Important. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Normally I mouseover the link first then read, but I did the opposite in this case. When I saw the source I nodded to myself.
Mmm that labor theory of value, never gets old.
Mmm that labor theory of value, never gets old.
It just occurred to me that this is something I am teaching my children. They often claim that they deserve some privilege because "they tried" or "It took forever". I constantly tell them that if they spend 5 hours trying to dig a swimming pool with a teaspoon it really doesn't matter how much labor they have invested because they haven't actually produced anything of value.
My children are 10 and 13. It makes sense that they are not rational and think effort=value rather than result=value. Just another example of how the Leftarded are really nothing more than "adults" trapped in childhood.
I had a similar conversation with my mother's husband. I pointed out that I could spend all day working on my VW and only make it less valuable, which has in fact happened more than once.
Did not compute.
I'd just tell him I spend half the day digging a big hole and the other half filling it up. How much money do I get?
And that makes no sense. Why do we pay a woman who has a Master's degree in sociology far less than a man who has an engineering degree, when both have invested the same amount in their education and are working just as hard in an important job?
Because people with Master's degrees in sociology are stupid enough to write sentences like that.
And why mention sex there? Do male sociologists get paid more?
People promoting the pay inequality idea always do a bait and switch. Saying "women get paid less for the same work" and then listing several examples that do not involve people doing the same work.
Female engineers in my graduating class had higher average starting salaries than their male classmates. Although a higher percentage chose grad school.
Same here. They were getting way more job interviews/offers too.
I even know of one example with a female friend of mine where we had the exact same degrees, activities, and thesis project. I even helped her with writing her resume. The only differences between the two of us on paper: I had a 4.0 and was a TA on top of everything else we both did. She had a 3.2. Guess which one of us never got a phone interview and which got flown across the country for an in-person interview?
physicist-teacher wage gap
This person doesn't know many physicists.
How about this? If women want to make more, they can go into those fields that get paid more.
Why is that unreasonable to suggest? Males in the less lucrative fields get paid less too.
Look at the pornography industry for example.
Oh I do
Modeling too.
Writing romance novels!
"Why do we pay a woman who has a Master's degree in sociology far less than a man who has an engineering degree, when both have invested the same amount in their education and are working just as hard in an important job?"
If you ask that question, you've proven you should not be commenting on the matter already.
I'm also a fan of the term "we" as if salaries are decided by a patriarchal society rather than an employer.
That is a point. I think people just let that one go by too often. The use of "we" is odd but not surprising. It assumes that all decisions are somehow collective. When in truth collective decisions are a practical impossibility. And of course, when you are talking about businesses, a bunch of commie nonsense.
A sociology degree usually requires 120 credits. My Chem E degree required 137. I graduated with 147. A Venn diagram depicting Bill Clinton voters with Obama voters with likely Hillary voters is orders of magnitude easier than designing a filter plant. Nobody needs the Venn diagram but most folks prefer potable water.
So four years of 12 and 16 hours shifts in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club qualfies me for the same pay as anyone with a Ph.D.
Got it. I'm off to see my boss right now.
At least anyone with a sociology PhD.
"It's the same with teaching: there is this common attitude that elementary school teaching is women's work, because it involves nurturing children."
Complete bullshit. This attitude hasn't been prevalent at anything more than a superficial level since the Progressive era. Rather than empirically examine WHY women are drawn in such large numbers to teaching, and WHY they stay in the profession despite its lower salaries compared to more lucrative jobs, that dumb shit POZ Myers whines that it's the same old insidious patriarchal conspiracy.
And yes, teaching can be difficult if you're working in a largely non-white public school, especially from the middle school-high school levels when teenager hormones kick in and kids across the spectrum start to consider discipline as optional. But to argue that it's more difficult than what a Physics PhD or electrical engineer does on a daily basis is outright comical. There's a reason that even the leftiest of left-wing academics don't consider an EdD to be particularly rigorous.
It's also the discrepancy in labor supply. Frankly, a lot of computer scientists and mathematicians lead quite leisurely lives, sleep in, and never really seem to "work hard" even compared to schoolteachers (let's forget for a moment that it's a leftist myth that schoolteachers are any more overworked than any other occupation). Well, chances are, almost any mathematician could, with some training, do a passable job as a schoolteacher. Maybe not the best, but passable. In fact, you don't need to be that intelligent to be a passable schoolteacher, something I learned early on in my childhood.
But almost no schoolteacher could do the mathematician's job, at all. Only a minute proportion of the human population could do that work. So there's a huge amount of demand for a mathematician, as they are quite indispensable, but a schoolteacher is easily replaceable due to the fact that many more people can do that job if need be.
Even worse than the labor theory of value part...
"In all of his essay, the author fails to get into any specifics, with one exception: the purported UVA rape case that was reported in Rolling Stone. In this, he echoes a standard talking point among rape apologists: it's black and white. Either the rape is confirmed with so much evidence that it will lead to an automatic conviction in a court of law, or it didn't happen, and the victim has no recourse but to shut up entirely. Gray areas where one has been harmed, there is no doubt that harm has been done, but there is insufficient material evidence to justify locking someone up for 20 years (and rightfully so; standards of evidence are important before significant penalties should be applied), are nonexistent to this guy."
Really, cause from where I sit the SJW's are the ones who are pushing for a standard of unless there is categorical evidence that the rape didn't happen then it did happen and the accused must be punished.
There are fewer women in physics than in biology, and I have been told in all seriousness that that means that biology is "easier" than physics....
Different, but not easier. Physics implicates fewer sub-disciplines of science, but is more abstract than biology. Still, I don't think one is "easier" than the other, unless your particular mind grasps one or the other with greater ease. Biology requires a big warehouse of memorized detail, physics requires spatial thinking and ease with math and, uh, the physical world of object motion.
I'd take a flyer and guess that at this website right here, there are more people with physics degrees than bio degrees, but both are outnumbered by engineering degrees or finance degrees.
"Easier" is a highly subjective term. Personally, I would find physics more difficult.
What can be said is this: skills requisite so success in physics are rarer than those necessary for biology. Physics requires better mathematical reasoning than biology which inevitably makes a person capable of being a good physicist more a rarity than a person capable of being a good biologist. Ergo, there is a lower supply of potential physicists than for potential biologists and therefore greater demand per unit. Hence why physicists get paid more.
And note that I am a biologist rather than a physicist, so if anything, it would be in my interest here to play along with the bullshit feminist narrative about biologists being undervalued, but the fact is we're not.
Women are no more undervalued than short people are undervalued relative to tall people. Both make less money, but for reasons other than gender or height. But being a short person I suppose I should jump on the victimhood bandwagon and start railing about tall privilege.
Physics is esoterica for most people, and that's really at the center of the difference in whatever you might call it, social status or status within hiring decisions. I'd bet most who start as bio majors don't drop out of biology only to take up physics instead.
What I find best about physics and its esoteric nature: you can hear people who've never taken it, or if taken not passed, who will talk about something and say "it's just simple physics." How is someone supposed to hold their tongue in that situation?
I'd like to see an epidemiological study of the intersection of people saying "it's just simple physics", and people who identify as "progressive." I'd expect strong correlations.
The comments are a great source of amusement and/or a brain aneurysm depending on your disposition.
When it occurs to be that this is a community where the suggestion that males and females have innate behavioral differences is considered evil, I ask myself, how are they any different from creationists? Oh right, they paid 200,000 to acquire their stupidity.
It's the same with teaching: there is this common attitude that elementary school teaching is women's work, because it involves nurturing children. Never mind that teaching is very hard work,
Yup. So hard that my HS grad mom worked full-time, kept a house, and I tested at 4th grade in reading as a 6 yr old in Kindergarten. As did my 3 yrs older sister (who do you think taught me?)
This Monday happens to be a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which makes the timing of this talk particularly objectionable.
What kind of dizzy broad thinking does it take to start an awareness month on the 20th?
Look, it's that time of the month, cis shitlord.
Dangnabit! You made me blow coffee out my nose, you brazen bastard!
This Monday happens to be a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which makes the timing of this talk particularly objectionable.
All your months are belong to us.
This generation is so ripe for slavery. My plans for world domination should proceed quite easily.
This would be funny if it wasn't so, so accurate.
Reagan was right when he said freedom is always just one generation away from extinction.
Except they'd be shittiest slaves/minions/subjects ever.
"I don't wannna! Can't make me! Waaah! Do what? I don't know how to do anything! Wait, who are you again? Where am I?"
Try being overlord of that and you'll overthrow yourself in two weeks.
They only do that because there are no negative consequences. On the contrary, they are rewarded.
"There is no safe space from the lash."
But they'd be such sucky slaves. Half an hour in a cotton field would kill them.
And turning them loose to operate machinery is simply too terrifying to contemplate
That. That right there is some funny shit, people. Well done, Brett L.
the student-activists who prefaced her talk at Oberlin College on Monday with an appeal for anyone who felt unsafe to seek sanctuary in the designated "safe space."
.
I want to see somebody offer up a "safe space" refuge, and then lock the doors and show bestiality porn to the Little Preciouses.
I laughed.
I just googled oberlin and noticed it is in Ohio. Why does warty let this place stand?!?
/also Jesse, how do I do an interrobang again?
It's actually quite beautiful there. I can't believe I am saying that about Ohio, but there you go.
"I can't believe I am saying that about Ohio" the greatest state in America? Come now!
I'm sure it is pretty, which all the more reason for warty to level the school and build, I don't know.... a rapeatorium.
You got into Agile Cyborg's private stash didn't you?
I like Ohio.
Wait a minute, so the lead singer from the Bangles gave a lecture at Oberlin ?
+1 Eternal Flame
She had herself a manic Monday.
'Walk Like An Egyptian' is a problematic example of cultural appropriation, racism, and Western cis-gender hegemony.
Foreign types with the hookah pipes say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Even better, she gave the lecture on a Monday...
The real story here is that they didn't successfully pressure the school into canceling the talk.
Oberlin College Republicans and Libertarians
You wouldn't have much trouble getting a seat at that table.
If I can ask a question, I hope someone here might be able to enlighten me. Why on Earth would anyone hire any graduate (I regret to say, especially a woman) from Oberlin?
Seriously. I mean I see little evidence that these precious little snowflakes have any ability to exist outside an environment where they might possibly encounter anything beyond an affirmation of just how special they are. I've never seen any particular evidence that Oberlin graduates have, on average, any particular talent, skill, or ability that differentiate them in the least from a host of other college grads. And I see bringing any of these people on as voluntarily incurring a great deal of legal risk. So, why is their diploma anything other than the kiss of death for a graduate seeking gainful employment?
They all get jobs at nonprofits when they graduate.
It IS pretty much a job placement program for non-profits. I dated a girl who went straight from school in to non-profit and most of the people she worked with were former classmates.
All for the low-low price of $200K!
That's how you keep a non-profit a non-profit. Increase your own salaries!
Fuck off, dipshit.
HAHAHA. You disagree?
Nope. I'd just like you and all the rest of your troll handles to fuck off.
I have two handles. Neither trolls. Both express my opinion, which is probably the same as yours for the most part. You got caught up in one little disagreement, and now you like to try to shout me down. Kind of like these Oberlin students...
No you're handle is alluding to some posts by a no-shit racist who has been frequently banned here and keeps coming back like some kind of virulent herpes.
*Your handle. You are your handle. I digest.
I was never banned from anything. Suggesting that there is more than one conclusion for why African Americans happen to be statistically over represented in prison is an alternative opinion and one that I used as devil's advocate rather than as my own viewpoint. And people acted just like this mob. It's funny really!
hah-hah-hah
There are way too many hot females on campus that are into this claptrap. And yes, quite a few major in shit like "Nonprofit Management"...if I wasn't worried about a rape charge I would've tried to infiltrate their groups a long time ago.
"I did it all for the nookie."
It makes them feel smart without having to read any actual books or do math.
I've tried associating with some of those women. It's just too damned stressful to sit their and pretend to be as retarded as they are for even twenty minutes, not nearly long enough to seal the deal.
But, that kind of begs the question, doesn't it? I mean, you'd expect non-profits would demand some base level of productivity. And they certainly wouldn't be eager to take on legal risk.
Maybe I'm sheltered. I just can't see where the kind of people I keep hearing about from Oberlin are anything other than a negative to an employer. And that's if you weren't paying them at all. I can only imagine they all have some sort of family connections that offset their general uselessness and risk.
Well with a lot of non-profits, the money comes from grants that are not even tracked. There was a great article about my city of Cincinnati in our paper about the fact that the city does not keep any record of whether organizations they give grant or incentive money too actually perform in any way.
In other words, you don't need skill to take free money and then do nothing with it.
"[...]In 2007, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) held a seminar for the nonprofits vying for a piece of $78 million in funding. Grant seekers were told that in the next funding cycle, they would be required ? for the first time ? to provide quantifiable proof their programs were accomplishing something.
The room exploded with outrage. This wasn't fair.[...]"
http://www.sfweekly.com/sanfra.....toryPage=2
"The room exploded with outrage. This wasn't fair"
AAAAHAHAHAHAHA! This sounds like a line from a John Barth novel.
To be fair, whatever the city is measuring is unlikely to have more than the most tangential connection to actual performance.
As far as I can tell, most non-profits are scams designed to cash in on government handouts and rich donors' guilt. So, no, I don't think productivity is much of a plus.
Ha! Said it first! Told you we probably agree on most things. Isn't that cute 🙂
As far as I can tell, most non-profits are scams designed to cash in on government handouts and rich donors' guilt.
Having lived around dc my entire life I can assure you it is much closer to all.
I say most because things like the Red Cross that occasionally do some good things are nonprofits.
Or the majority of hospitals. Not that they don't also rely on grants that they do not fulfill.
They actually have become a massive bloated bureaucracy of late. I think the best nonprofits that actually exist right at this moment as far as how much of your dollar impacts the most people are Doctors without borders and the wounded warrior project.
Oh yes, I have a ton of secondhand experience in the RC's bloated bureaucracy. But my point was just that they're not 100% useless.
My sister works with veterans in 2 of her 3 jobs (the other is the National Guard). She hates the Wounded Warrior Project, for what that's worth.
There are a lot of small local non-profits that actually do things.
Nah.
I dated a guy who worked for a non-profit once. There was basically nothing to do all day. His family was rich so I guess that helped afford his huge apartment.
He probably also got paid handsomely.
I was intro-ed to a girl who worked at some homeless advocacy group and she pulled down 100k managing the group's "social media footprint." But, it wasn't as if she actually had to do anything really work-like and prove she was getting positive results in fundraising. No, she no shit just updated FaceTwat.
After getting a little sick of her smarmy self-congratulatory "making the world a better place" schtick I spent less than 5 minutes on the web to find out that the group was just a front for a slumlord to scam for millions of taxpayer dollars to build an apartment complex at a cost of $300,000/unit. Even in Charlottesville that kind of coin could have bought some really nice houses, nevermind the fact that VA simply doesn't have a homelessness problem, or an "affordable" housing shortage.
She was pretty pissed when I explained to her what exactly her group actually did.
So how was she in bed?
The worst people in world history are almost invariably ones who are "trying to make the world a better place."
Whenever I hear of one of these advocacy groups I can't but think, couldn't you have built like 10 actual fucking soup kitchens and a hospital with the money you waste paying humanities majors to play on facebook all day?
I've never seen one of these precious snowflakes apply for a real job so I have no idea.
The worst I've encountered were some spoiled brats from the University of Richmond, but I don't think they were anything close to the level of derp the Oberlin students are.
I would throw any resume from a private liberal arts college directly into the trash.
Hey the majority of people who graduated from U of R at least aren't all commies.
I would throw any resume from a private liberal arts college directly into the trash.
As a Hampden-Sydney grad, I guess I should be offended.
I'll pencil my offense in for sometime between 8:30 and 8:35 tonight.
Seriously, though, it isn't even the general uselessness or "spoiled brat" nature of these kids that bothers me. Most recent grads are basically useless and a couple of solid failures is usually enough of a kick in the ass to clear up the whole "spoiled brat" thing. What bothers me is their pathetically fragile nature and profound sense of grievance. These kids would be nightmare employees from day one and would only get worse as time passes.
Actually one of them made the news last week...
http://thelibertarianrepublic......l-clothes/
IIRC she was a Oberlin grad to boot
I remember that story, so hilarious.
Nothing like broadcasting to the Tech community that you are a toxic hire assuredly ready to file a grievance once you've been hired.
SMAHT. $200K at Oberlin. Still can't believe that.
From her LinkedIn page:
I intend to continue increasing my skills as a scientist and as a motivated, socially conscious citizen of the world. I will graduate Oberlin College with a BA in Computer Science in December 2015, after which I will pursue a career in software engineering. Eventually I hope to found a video game studio that employs marginalized and underrepresented groups.
So, she's going to buy the rights to produce Depression Quest 2?
Sure, understanding today's complex world of the future is a little like having bees live in your head. But, there they are.
How did you know I went to Oberlin?
I appreciate that some students are such horribly damaged people that they can't bear to subject themselves to any views outside their chosen echo chamber. If that's how they want to live their lives, go for it. Its their prerogative. Its why they chose Oberlin.
What i do not accept is that these same people seem to think that they have the right to pre-empt other people's speech and shout it down, and declare it Blasphemy before a word has been uttered.
*(see the signage that they dressed the entrance in)
Do terms like "Rape Apologist" or "Misogyny" really mean anything here? do they actually quote a single statement by CHS that substantiates these accusations? Or is it completely de rigeur to simply label all viewpoints not your own as tantamount to 'violent crimes'?
It baffles me that almost no one in the media points out the degree to which these people are projecting their own intolerance and viciousness onto others. Every hyperbolic adjective they use to describe their imagined oppressors is entirely characteristic of their own behavior. They're frothing, hate-filled, intolerant dogmatists who actively oppress any viewpoint other than their own.
So many people are surprisingly, amazingly distracted by words and totally ignore actual actions. It's very, very strange to me, but it's super common. And these projecting assholes have learned that if they just claim they are for "good" things, and the people they hate are for "bad" things, people will believe them, even though their projection is rampant and obvious, and their actions are vicious and nasty and the opposite of their "good" rhetoric.
It works. That's why they do it. Why does it work? Good fucking question, because I really don't know.
It is how evil works. It is utterly strange to anyone not caught up in it. I used to always wonder how it was that people were able to stick millions of defenseless people in ovens or take their food away leaving them to starve. How is it that so many otherwise normal people believed and did such insane things. In the last 15 years, this country has shown me how it happened. These people are just a tragic comic miniature example of it.
People convince themselves that they are the victims. There is a lot of comfort in being a victim. If I am a victim, I don't have to take any responsibility for my own failures. Hell, I don't even have to face up to the random unfairness of life. I have a ready made excuse and explanation for everything I don't like in the world; whoever made me the victim did it. The more evil and more important my enemy is, the more important I am for being in the cause to fight him. So they just devolve into a fantasy life where everyone is guilty by virtue of being part of the designated enemy group. Oppressing that group of course never makes anything better. But that can't face that because that would require admitting they are wrong and taking responsibility and all that. So, the solution is always ever more oppression. It wasn't enough to throw the Jews out of the universities, we need to get them out of the professions too and so forth until finally the only remaining option is murdering them.
Yes, their idiotic mentality is incredibly prone to never-ending escalation, which is why we are almost daily confronted with increasing idiocy. It can't help but go to 11. And then they still need to make it one louder as people become inured to their latest stupidity.
This element is what makes this kind of shit dangerous. Not its inherent stupidity. The fact that they have to escalate it or else they have to face how stupid it is.
I had that exact thought this morning as Deblasio was announcing some cockamamie plan to reduce NYC garbage by 90%. We are currently wasting money and resources to recycle shit we'd be better off tossing, and he wants turn the screws even more.
We're lucky that these SJW whiner types aren't Prussians. I don't think we have much to fear when they decide to get violent.
We are lucky they have never actually experienced any real hardship. The worst Nazis were not the Prussians. The worst were the Sudetan Germans. They really had been fucked after the First World War. They went from living under Austrian German rule to be being a minority ruled by the Czechs. And Czechs were real assholes to them.
If these little bastards ever experience any actual hardship or oppression, they will turn murderous. Look how evil they are now having lived totally privileged lives. Imagine if they actually had a legitimate complaint.
There's a difference between these assholes and the Sudaten Germans, though. The Sudaten Germans actually survived oppression by the Czechs. These assholes couldn't survive mommy and daddy not paying the bill for their iPhones.
Won't make any difference how weak they are. We don't live in a Hobbesian world; the institutions are all wide open and power is for the taking for whoever can sell the sweetest smelling bullshit. If Julia Gillard can victimhood her way to the most powerful person in Australia, then, while holding that power, claim to be oppressed by Australia, and some people can actually not laugh their heads off at that, then anything can happen here too. People like these Oberlinites will be running this country in 20 years, literally.
They're frothing, hate-filled, intolerant dogmatists who actively oppress any viewpoint other than their own.
That is exactly what they are. And we have seen this before. Nazism started on college campuses. And it followed this exact script. Nazism was at its heart nothing but a really nasty cult of victim-hood. The pure German race had been victims. They were stabbed in the back and oppressed by the lower races and their capitalist toadies in France and England. The Germans were an oppressed people penned up in a land too small to support them in a world ruled by lesser races and vile capitalists.
And remember, the Nazis only want equality for Germans. That's it, equality is all they want, nothing more.
The people who cast the deciding votes putting Hitler into power were the social conservatives (the Center Party).
And we have plenty of those today, both on the left and on the right.
It's pretty simple: many of them outright don't believe in free speech. Yeah, there are the "I believe in free speech, but I don't" folks, but there are also an increasing number of self-professed "progressives" who say things like "freedom of speech is an outdated meme". That's still a bit too totalitarian for many, but who knows where things will go with people who simultaneously believe in microaggressions and that being offensive--offense being in the eye of the perpetually-aggrieved beholder--should be verboten.
Which begs the question: Are we to be oblivious to sexual assault the other 11 months?
I'm oblivious too it all 12

these schools need to start teaching basic logic
No kidding. Even high school geometry would be nice. You know, where you learn to build a "proof" from known true aspects of the object, and are explicitly prohibited from just making shit up.
Given a right triangle 2" on the hypotenuse etc.
A) Ouch, someone could poke their eye out on that triangle.
B) That makes me sad. 🙁
C) I like kittens.
D) Republicans don't like kittens.
THEREFORE:
Let's hold a protest!
I still have nightmares thinking about proofs. It's a damn triangle because I'm looking at the bloody triangle!
Diagrams lie.
I bet Sommers could have stood in front of these sissies and gone on a ten minute Bill Burr style rant, and all these children would have done is sat in their seats crying.
What do you expect from people that have been sheltered their entire lives and treated like special snowflakes who can do no wrong? This is the easily forseeable consequence of scoreless soccer games, participation ribbons, everyone gets a trophy because everyone's a winner, helicopter parenting horseshit.
It is also the foreseeable consequence of raising a generation that was told from birth all truth and morality are relative. As much as anything these kids are looking to believe in something and feel a part of a greater cause. Being part of the SJW mob does that. They are living examples of the old maxim that the danger of people not believing in God is not that they will believe nothing but that they will believe anything.
If you tell kids everything is relative and there is no objective truth, it is no surprise when they give up on reason and just act on emotion. What other tools for interpreting life have you given them?
Yup, when you define morality and truth, it is easy to decide that all that matters is how you feel.
The idea that moral relativism is rampant and responsible for the putative decay of Western civilization is merely a propagandistic meme created by post-WWII Christians, largely to detract from the role Christians played in the rise of Nazism in Germany.
In fact, most people do have strong views about right and wrong that they believe to be universally valid. What irks people like you is that the absolute truths and morality they believe in causes them to reject your religions as false and immoral.
Well, anyway. Sommers is one brave broad who deserves to make me a sammich.
If you are in the market for an over 50 mom, you could do worse than Sommers.
I liked that episode where she used her bionics to defeat the computer than wanted to set off a cobalt bomb.
That wanted, that is.
You're dating yourself, ProL. And I'm not talking about what you do with your hand.
Like you aren't familiar with the entire bionic man, woman, dog, and evil bionic oeuvre. I bet you have an Oscar Goldman poster on your wall right now.
I thought she used a logic trap to destroy the computer's circuits.
I just remember the running and abuse, and the bomb not going off until Charlton Heston set it off several thousand years later.
I cannot wait for these people to turn on each other.
It's a misconception among the right and the left alike that the right is particularly threatening as a political movement to leftists.
*Other leftists* are far more likely to participate in violence against leftists than almost anyone else, whether moderate leftists against radicals (e.g., Wilson criminalizing the speech of socialists during WWII or the Weimar Republic brutally suppressing communist revolts), or radicals against insufficiently pure leftists (e.g., Girondists persecuted by Jacobins or Old Bolsheviks purged by Stalinists).
Proclaiming solidarity is more, not less, likely to bring the wrath of leftists -- it is one reason why it is so important to emphatically state opposition to the left in such matters as social justice, since you will rarely win on leftists' native soil and only incur scorn for your efforts.
Like the Nazis and the Soviets! There, I said it!
More like the SA and the SS.
I wish we could reanimate Christopher Hitchens and convince him to go to this college and give a similar speech....then dare them to ask questions. Oh the crying that would ensue would be priceless. And make sure we give him plenty of booze before hand.
A known cause of campus rape is women getting drunk at fraternity parties, so I guess feminists are "rape denialists" for dismissing that factor.
Ah, so like rape culture and rape apologists, rape denialists are another one of those things that don't actually exist. Good to know.
Wait a minute. There are College Republicans and Libertarians at Oberlin? Talk about burying the lede.
"At one point, a philosophy professor in the audience stood up and called for civility. They mocked him and yelled at him to sit down, according to Sommers."
This brave soul clearly has no interest in keeping his job. Expect the Mob to start calling for his head before the week is over.
He used to be a chemistry professor at Duke. Used to be...
How, I wonder, might these squishy-minded people "guard their space" or anything else for that matter?
So, in essence, the infantile leftists who were afraid to allow Sommers to speak to others (they didn't have to attend, much less listen, themselves) because they falsely claim that anyone who disputes any rape statistic is "pro-rape" (an excellent illustration of how badly Oberlin has taught them) want to rape her for her heresy. How liberal. At least Oberlin actually allowed her to speak. It's past time for all levels of government to start removing all government funding from intolerant universities that allow the demented radicals to ban heterodox speakers.

These people need to see themselves a as victim, and they HAVE to believe in some form of establishment that exists primarily to exploit or exclude people without voice. This gives them a cause to "empower" themselves or initiate a movement. They're kinda like Don Quijote that way - they manufacture courage and agenda in response to phantom enemies - with gusto.
If they're proven wrong, they lose their meaning. If rape culture doesn't exist, they can't rally feminists, energize them, guilt people into supporting "equality" measures that limits liberty, create useless positions of power for women, etc. They have to accept brutal / mundane truths that some women are underrepresented because men are better equipped for those jobs, or colleges aren't rape factories.
That's why they do this, even AFTER facts demonstrably prove them wrong. They'll rationalize that "Just because we were wrong this time doesn't mean rapes don't happen."

No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?

What do we do about the word "warning"?
When I read it I immediately start looking side to side and sweat nervously.
And it has "war" in it!!!!!!
Send them all to the spice mines of Kessel.
But there are so many of them.
She has aged about as well as any cheesecake rocker chick ever has. Compare her to say how Belinda Carlisle looks these days.
Have you seen Debra Harry lately ?
In fairness, Debra is in her mid 60s. She was a lot older than she seemed back in the 1970s. She was pushing 30 when Blondie hit it big.
But it's not got much spam in it!
I'm amazed more people aren't triggered by the word trigger. I mean, it relates to guns of all things. Couldn't we use a less charged word referring instead to bows and arrows, or catapults or trebuchets?
Yeah, yeah, I know - tattoos, but still.
The hell is that supposed to mean?? Tattoos are fucking hot.
