Here are 8 great  apps that make your world a little freer—and a whole lot easier to navigate.

Waze is a real-time, crowd-sourced map that not only tells you about traffic jams and finds the cheapest nearby gas station for you but also warns you of speed traps, police checkpoints, and ticket cams. Get this: The info is so good that the National Sheriffs Association is pressuring app stores to shut Waze down.

Open WhisperSystem's Red Phone and Text Secure provide easy end-to-end encryption for phone calls, text messages, and chats. If you're on Apple iOS, check out Signal.

Meerkat and Periscope allow you to livestream everything from your kids' soccer games to police stops directly to Twitter. The only thing blocking these apps is that they're only available on Apple's iOS for now.

The Peacekeeper Emergency Response System app cultivates "benevolence" and independence in communities by allowing you to create your own personal emergency response network so that friends, family, and others can come to your aid at a moment's notice—and you can come to theirs.

And then of course there's Uber, the ride-sharing app that almost singlehandedly undermined taxi cab cartels all over the world. Uber is driving down a dark road by collaborating with state and local governments to keep out new competitors, but it's also true that its ease of use and superiors product has brought safe, affordable rides to neighborhoods that never knew them before.

Here's a bonus app: Reason's mobile app is super-light and fast-loading—and constantly updated with our latest blog posts, videos, and articles about "Free Minds and Free Markets."

Uber is driving down a dark road by collaborating with state and local governments to keep out new competitors

    Stop lying.

    1. Warrren   10 years ago

But isn't that what they are doing? Even if it's not that now, that is what this sorts of relationships turn into all to frequently.

      1. Cytotoxic   10 years ago

No it isn't. Uber is acceding to some regulations to satiate the regulators and pols and avoid worse regulation. Reason has never provided an example of Uber urging the banning of competitors.

        1. Warrren   10 years ago

          That's how it starts.

          1. Cytotoxic   10 years ago

Or not. How about waiting until it actually happens before damning Uber for surviving and prospering?

    2. edkocyk   10 years ago

I make up to $90 an hour working from my home. My story is that I quit working at Walmart to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $40h to $86h? Someone was good to me by sharing this link with me, so now i am hoping i could help someone else out there by sharing this link... Try it, you won't regret it!......

"National Sheriffs Association is pressuring app stores to shut Waze down. "
    .
Gnawing fear that kulaks and wreckers will get away without paying their fair share (of the pension and overtime fund).

    1. Thymirus   10 years ago

Ticket cameras? Police checkpoints? Speed traps? They're all unconstitutional horseshit, and individuals and tools that make avoiding them easier should be thoroughly and enthusiastically encouraged, lauded, and supported. Fuck the NSA.

  3. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

So yesterday I pointed out that Garry Trudeau apparently made some shitty, horrible remarks about Charlie Hebdo and Bo got angry at me for not waiting for all the remarks to be released for 'context.' Well here's the fucking context.

By punching downward, by attacking a powerless, disenfranchised minority with crude, vulgar drawings closer to graffiti than cartoons, Charlie wandered into the realm of hate speech, which in France is only illegal if it directly incites violence. Well, voila?the 7 million copies that were published following the killings did exactly that, triggering violent protests across the Muslim world, including one in Niger, in which ten people died. Meanwhile, the French government kept busy rounding up and arresting over 100 Muslims who had foolishly used their freedom of speech to express their support of the attacks.

In other words, Charlie Hebdo should be made illegal by the French state because criticism of Islam resulted in Muslims killing people. So if you criticize someone and they respond by committing murders, you've 'incited violence' and ought to be punished by the state.

His point about the Muslims being punished for supporting the attacks is a good one, but so far as I'm concerned these comments make Trudeau look like an even bigger shithead than I'd assumed.

    1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

Trudaeu is a really disgusting human being:

And now we are adrift in an even wider sea of pain. Ironically, Charlie Hebdo, which always maintained it was attacking Islamic fanatics, not the general population, has succeeded in provoking many Muslims throughout France to make common cause with its most violent outliers. This is a bitter harvest.

Hey, Garry, if 'many Muslims' have aligned themselves with violent Islamists than by definition they are not 'outliers,' and, secondly, Muslims have this thing called 'personal agency' where they get to make their own decisions. As a result, if someone making fun of you causes you to make common cause with terrorists, it's not the fault of the satirists, it's your fault for being such a scumbag that you allowed your petty widdle fewwings to overwhelm your moral sense and lead you into violence.

Not only is Trudeau absolute slime for making this argument, but he's an outright racist who apparently believes Arab Muslims are incapable of being mocked without murdering people.

      1. gaoxiaen   10 years ago

Islam is a race? I never knew that.

        1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

In Garry's case this is absolutely racism because his claims about Islam are based on the fact that they're brown people. If someone insulted, say, Anglicans and the Anglicans proceeded to kill people, Trudeau would never make this argument because they're predominantly white.

Trudeau doesn't care about their religious beliefs (since he has no compunctions about 'punching down' in order to insult lower income Christian denominations), but cares only about the fact that they are brown people and therefore entirely not at fault for their own actions. They're just vacant, agencyless ciphers who react to the actions of the white man rather than having any control over their own actions.

          1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

            They're just vacant, agencyless ciphers

It's important to keep them that way; how else could they serve as both "a powerless, disenfranchised minority" and as dangerous mad dogs as required by the argument?

          2. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

So anyone who predicted that violent responses by some Muslims will likely follow certain provocations is racist? Against 'brown people?'

            1. Thymirus   10 years ago

Intimations that those Muslims are any less responsible for their misadventures and crimes than me, you, the hotdog vendor at your local stadium, or your mother, to name a few examples, are absolutely, unequivocally retarded, Satanically awful in moral terms, and precisely what you're being criticized for.

              1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

If i said, circa 1963, that you had the right to go to the middle of Watts and run down MLK, but that you'd probably provoke a violent response there and that you shouldn't do it because you'd be punching down, would I be racist against black people?

                1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

I have no idea what you're going on about - in the Charlie Hebdo case, who is the Martin Luther King equivalent?

                  1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

It doesn't matter. Bo's a racist, sexist white knighting idiot who thinks non-whites and women are never as culpable for their actions as white men.

As a result, when white men say racist shit on a private bus, that's worse than Muslim women committing vandalism, intimidation, and actual property crimes, as evidenced in the thread last night.

Evil is when a white man says the N-word, understandable is when a Muslim slits your throat. You just shouldn't have provoked him.

                    1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

For Irish the real problem of racism is the racism of blacks, Muslims and such. Punching down is essentially his mantra.

                  2. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

MLK was a beloved figure to many, especially African Americans Eddie. That should get you started.

                    1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

So who was the "beloved figure" in the Charlie Hebdo controversy?

                      Was it yo momma?

                    2. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

It's funny, Irish is hopelessly partisan and blinkered, but Eddie, your plain dumb at times. You really don't get that you're undercutting yourself. Hilarious

                    3. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

                      "your plain dumb"

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

                      [pauses for breath]

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

                    4. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

You don't get that your 'yo momma' pathetic ness is based on the idea that some speech has predictably violent consequences. That was Francis point and Trudeau's, and your sitting there making it repeatedly all the while thinking you're, well, goodness knows what.

You really should let Irish do this argument for your side sport.

                    5. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

And...you're hoping people will forget how you literally said "your plain dumb" [ACTUAL ORIGINAL SPELLING].

                    6. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

Eddie, I'll take my phones faulty autocorrect over your fundamentally misunderstanding what anyone's talking about in this discussion any day.

                    7. Marshall Gill   10 years ago

your fundamentally misunderstanding what anyone's talking about in this discussion any day.

Ultimate projection. There isn't a poster on this site who purposefully misunderstands what anyone's talking about more than the Botard.

Shouldn't there be an apostrophe in "phone's"? Yes, there should be.

Are you going to blame your phone for *all* the idiocy you spew?

                    10. Brochettaward   10 years ago

Bo's comparison is absurd. If you went and ran down (presumably with a car) MLK, you just murdered someone in cold blood because you don't like your beliefs. Throwing out the race element, in his comparison the person killing MLK is closer to the cunts who massacred Charlie Hebdo staff.

Beyond that, the point being made here (in my view, a little clumsily) is that the view of Muslims is condescending and patronizing...sort of like the (brown) Muslims are children and not to be held responsible for their actions.

Notice how Bo also never responded to what the initial argument last night was over which was his pedantic attempts to refute the sources of the original quote. He argued it was probably taken out of context and we needed confirmation (despite the shit he routinely posts on even the flimsiest of evidence).

      2. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

You see racism everywhere, it's just never of the white person hating black or muslim variety.

Do you think someone could say that certain speech is going to offend a lot of Muslims (or any group) without it being racist, or predict a response might occur among at least some in the group, without it being racist?

        1. Cytotoxic   10 years ago

          Question is not relevant.

      3. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

        *sighs*

What part of "behead those who insult Islam" don't you understand, Irish?

      4. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

"I, and most of my colleagues, have spent a lot of time discussing red lines since the tragedy in Paris. As you know, the Muhammad cartoon controversy began eight years ago in Denmark, as a protest against "self-censorship," one editor's call to arms against what she felt was a suffocating political correctness. The idea behind the original drawings was not to entertain or to enlighten or to challenge authority?her charge to the cartoonists was specifically to provoke, and in that they were exceedingly successful. Not only was one cartoonist gunned down, but riots erupted around the world, resulting in the deaths of scores. No one could say toward what positive social end, yet free speech absolutists were unchastened. Using judgment and common sense in expressing oneself were denounced as antithetical to freedom of speech."

        1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

This was right after he patted himself on the back - so hard he almost broke his arm - for his courageous stance against pro-life laws in Texas.

So I'm guessing he doesn't think prolifers are as violent as Islamic militants, or else he wouldn't have provoked them so much.

          1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

And which definition of "chastened" was he using -

": to cause (someone) to feel sad or embarrassed about something that has happened

": to correct by punishment or suffering : discipline; also : purify

"a : to prune (as a work or style of art) of excess, pretense, or falsity : refine

"b : to cause to be more humble or restrained : subdue"

          2. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

The other great part is when he claims that Moliere was the 'little guy' fighting against the powerful, despite the fact that Moliere was himself from a rich family and got a pension from the King.

I don't know how much you're allegedly 'punching up' when the government rewards you for your work.

            1. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

The other great part is when he claims that Moliere was the 'little guy' fighting against the powerful, despite the fact that Moliere was himself from a rich family

Sounds shockingly like Trudeau himself, coming from American Progressive royality.

        2. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

Shorter Garry Trudeau: "The slut shouldn't have worn such a short skirt."

        3. Heroic Mulatto   10 years ago

The idea behind the original drawings was not to entertain or to enlighten or to challenge authority?her charge to the cartoonists was specifically to provoke

No, I'm pretty sure the idea behind the original drawings was to challenge those who would claim world-wide authority for the dictates of sharia law.

        4. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

Sounds like what Pope Francis had to say about the matter, right Eddie?

          1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

As described by the clerico-fascists at the ultramontane *Wall Street Journal*:

"ROME?Pope Francis on Monday condemned religious fundamentalism, saying "deviant forms of religion" lead to atrocities such as last week's attacks in France and the strife in the Middle East, and noted how perpetrators use God only as a pretext for their crimes.

"In his annual speech to diplomats accredited with the Holy See, the pope called on Muslim leaders in particular to denounce an "extremist interpretation" of their religion that attempts to justify acts of violence, and asked the international community to denounce fundamentalism.

""Religious fundamentalism, even before it eliminates human beings by perpetrating horrendous killings, eliminates God himself, turning him into a mere ideological pretext," the pontiff said in his speech at the Vatican.

"Among the acts carried out by religious fundamentalists, the pope mentioned the "tragic slayings" in Paris last week, and persecution of minorities, including Christians, in Iraq and Syria."

            1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

"One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people's faith, one cannot make fun of faith," he said. "There is a limit. Every religion has its dignity ... in freedom of expression, there are limits."

              1. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

The Pope went on to say, "so I take back all I said against terrorism and I totally support gunning down editors and policemen in the street..."

                Wait, no, he didn't.

You know the expression "my Mama didn't raise no fool?"

You *don't* know it? I'm not surprised.

            2. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

The Pope *did* say he'd punch (not gun down) someone who insulted his mother.

Since you're obviously on a morally higher level than the Pope, I'm sure you wouldn't be offended if I say: On the Richter scale, 11.0 represents yo momma slipping and falling on the ground.

              1. Viscount Irish, Slayer of Huns   10 years ago

I like how Bo's moved the goalposts. Rather than defending Trudeau's indefensible idiocy (a project doomed to failure), Bo is now attacking your religion.

Of course, no one else on this board is a Catholic, so Bo doesn't even come close to proving his point with his THE POPE DID IT TOO arguments, but Botard's never been one for rational argumentation or the avoidance of logical fallacies.

                1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

I simply pointed out that Trudeau's message of 'one should exercise prudence over speech absolutism' is one echoed by someone I imagine he respects.

You assumed quite a bit at the time, yes. I think you might be assuming something today too. Does Trudeau say the French state should punish those that criticize others who then respond with violence? I don't see that in your excerpt.

I always felt a bar should be ranked by the quality of the music they play.

Over the last 10 years it seems bartenders often play a secondary role as "DJ"...most of the places I frequented, the staff would hook their own Pandora account to the stereo, so that you would actually note a change in the musical style when people changed shifts. i liked hearing stuff that other people liked that way.

    OT =

Case study example of why the contemporary obsession with "disparity" or "inequality" leads to completely meaningless or misleading analysis.

A map showing the "difference between male & female alcohol consumption"

To people who already find "wealth inequality" comparisons stupid and misleading, this will come as no surprise.

But I still think its worth noting how this instinct to always try and find 'disparity' in data (or compare-contrast between 'classes' of people, trying to validate some preconception) invariably leads people to completely misleading, useless results.

Or results that reveal things that they weren't intending to = in this case, it isn't really about Muslim countries *being the lowest per-capita drinkers on Earth*.... but rather that Women are more strict about abstinence than men. Or that they're so fucking oppressive to Women that they *can't choose to drink* even if they wanted to.

Meanwhile, many real differences are completely obliterated. The fact Eastern Europeans chug 3X the global average would be impossible to determine. And there's apparently little difference in "equality" between Canada and Somalia.

I think millions of people graduate college these days completely incapable of scrutinizing statistics in any way. The proliferation of "Study Shows! ="-news has a way of creating bullshit narratives that people seem to swallow wholesale.

    1. Bo Cara Esq.   10 years ago

Ok, what's the misleading conclusion you think is being suggested by the map? Can't it just be interesting to see that in some places women drink more relative to men than on others?

      1. Thymirus   10 years ago

Analyses of that nature, each usually undertaken in the technical guise of an academic study, tend to be fallaciously constructed pieces of shit whose purpose is to affirm some retarded authoritarian notion or another.

I read Krugman so that you don't have to:

One classic example of government doing it better is health insurance. Yes, conservatives constantly agitate for more privatization ? in particular, they want to convert Medicare into nothing more than vouchers for the purchase of private insurance ? but all the evidence says this would move us in precisely the wrong direction. Medicare and Medicaid are substantially cheaper and more efficient than private insurance; they even involve less bureaucracy.

Maybe we wouldn't need Social Security if ordinary people really were the perfectly rational, farsighted agents economists like to assume in their models (and right-wingers like to assume in their propaganda). In an idealized world, 25-year-old workers would base their decisions about how much to save on a realistic assessment of what they will need to live comfortably when they're in their 70s. They'd also be smart and sophisticated in how they invested those savings, carefully seeking the best trade-offs between risk and return.

I really hope for Krugman that he let one of the interns write this one, because even for Krugman standards this was a most egregious piece of writing.

      2. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

I read Krugman so that you don't have to:

And then bring him here and flail around with him. Next thing you know, broken windows and someone's lost an eye.

I wound up reading it anyway, and now I feel lied to.

        1. Libertarian   10 years ago

It seems to be unethical to post quotes without a link. Yet, as you observe, it can lead to chaos. I feel so dirty.

          1. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

To your credit, no one could have read

(and right-wingers like to assume in their propaganda)

without coming away tarnished. That's a phrase that's been sent to the corner in a tight dress and not come back without some money, bitch.

            1. Hamster of Doom   10 years ago

              ... and told not...

I'd still prefer collapsible threads to an edit button.

By this logic the government should be allowed to dictate what every American eats since a 25 year old isn't considering the potential health consequences a diet of pizza and beer might have 50 years from now.

Also, Krugman apparently believes that the problem of people not thinking far enough down the road can be alleviated by removing all their responsibilities and socializing the risk of their bad decisions. Seems like a recipe to make people engage in worse decisions to me.

      1. Thymirus   10 years ago

It only seems that way to you because your brain's functional, unlike Krugman's, which makes being a fucktarded moron who spews fucktarded bullshit very easy for him.

    3. John C. Randolph   10 years ago

So, Krugman once again tells baldfaced lies and hopes that his readers won't check up on him.

In re: favorite band. I dunno. Led Zeppelin is... no words. Led Zeppelin, for fuck's sake. But my favorite band?

That would mean Slipknot would have to be less than favorite. I... I just can't decide, man.

'Reset Button' with Former Adversaries Shown to be Non-Functional, Obama Now Determines to "Turn The Page*", Hoping New and Improved Bullshit-Euphemisms Will Replace Need for Coherent Foreign Policy

While i fully support ending both the Iranian-sanctions and the Cuban-embargo regimes, both being useless, unproductive wastes that have mainly served to prop-up dictatorships... i don't see either of these initiatives being made in the context of any actual foreign policy strategy, and rather being thrown together hastily to provide some "legacy" to an administration otherwise characterized by complete, total incompetence

    See = Yemen

less than subtle Iraqis* (to be fair, they're probably super-subtle with each other, but think Americans are complete idiots) point out : "we can always get the shit from Iran, you know", basically saying "bribe us not to".

I suppose after seeing Egypt being able to milk billions from Uncle Sugar for 40 years, they expect to get the same.

    2. Cytotoxic   10 years ago

There's not much evidence the sanctions are propping up Iran's regime and a lot of evidence it's hurting. They aren't as effective as they could be but they are working like it or not. The Iranian government is actually pretty desperate.

      1. GILMORE   10 years ago

"The Iranian government is actually pretty desperate."

        Right. Desperate for what, exactly?

The US gave them de facto political control over Iraq, and recently helped them expand and consolidate their control in former Sunni strongholds.

And while their economy is in the pooper- so what? its largely because of the price of oil, not sanctions.

They've been playing the long game since the 1980s. We never got anything positive out of sanctions other than perpetuating the regime by hurting their citizens. we might as well give up the charade and let the natural balancing act take over.

Some people really hate paying taxes

"(Reuters) - A man shot himself dead in front of the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, police said, sparking a temporary security lockdown at the complex on one of the busiest days for tourists in Washington.

The man, who was wearing a backpack and had carried a rolling suitcase and a sign to the site, fired a single shot at himself, Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine told reporters.

Dine said the man's sign had a "social justice" message but he did not immediately provide more details...

...a real estate developer...who was visiting Washington and was at the scene of the shooting, said the man who killed himself had a sign that he thinks said, "Tax the 1 percent"

    well, *that'll show them*
