Half the Number of Kids Die Before Age Five Now Than Did In 1990
Global life expectancy up more than six years too.

The folks over at Wired are reporting the good news that kids around the world are much less likely to die before age 5 than they were in 1990. This happy conclusion is based on data derived from a January study in The Lancet on the global burden of disease. The Lancet reported that 7,608,500 kids died in 1990 before reaching their fifth birthday. That number had dropped to 3,665,700 in 2013, a decline of more than 52 percent. Why? Mostly because fewer kids are dying from various communicable diseases and starvation. The Wired article points out that there are vaccines against many of the diseases now in retreat. I suspect that improved nutrition also enables some kids to fight off infections better.
The good news on mortality is not just limited to kids; more people are surviving in every age group. The overall age adjusted death rate has fallen from 1,160 per 100,000 in 1990 to 880 per 100,000 in 2013, a decline of about 24 percent. As result of these trends, global life expectancy for both sexes increased from 65.3 years in 1990, to 71.5 years in 2013. Keep in mind that global life expectancy in 1900 was just 31 years. L'Chaim!

But now they all have Guillain-Barr? syndrome.
Does this explain, Bo, shriek, Tony, derpfee, et al?
Environmentalists hardest hit.
Sorry, but I don't believe anything published in The Lancet anymore.
^This. The Lancet has beclowned itself too many times to be a credible source.
Fuck that goddamn dress!
Bill Clinton?
Blue/Black, White/Gold?
But capitalism and globalization are evil! Even if it has resulted in the most dramatic improvement in human well-being in the history of our species!
But, but, but... INEQUALITY!
That improvement happened in spite of capitalism, not because of it. The wealth that you think capitalism generated actually just fell from heaven like manna. Either that, or evil white people looted it from places where it hadn't even existed.
Those vaccines? You didn't build them!
No. The wealth came from the government printing money. You see, money is wealth. You buy stuff with money, right? So money is wealth. As far as nutrition goes, that's because of government as well. Where did the money for the research come from? Government. Where did the regulations mandating healthy food come from? Government. How did the food reach the children? Government roads.
You didn't build that, and you didn't feed those kids healthy food either. Government did.
Duh-derp!
+1 Trillion Dollar Coin
The Kochs aren't working the orphan children hard enough!
It's expensive when the orphans die. so it behooves the enlightened capitalist to take measures to keep as many alive and working as possible.
OT: NYT admits that competition can deliver favorable results in the cable market.

Now keep going with that.
The NY Times also notes that Doctor Who survived Ebola.
Of course he did. I don't think Ebola affects aliens from Gallifrey. And even if it did, he has a SONIC SCREWDRIVER!
If the episode where Amy pushed the red elevator button instead of the green one teaches us anything (besides asking your husband which one he pushed first), it's that Sonic Screwdrivers don't work on infections.
"Wow, what a day I've had...barkeep, give me a Sonic Screwdriver..."
That's the only *clean* Sonic Screwdriver joke I can think of.
OVERPOPULATION!!!111!!1!!111!!!!
Sort of OT: I've been thinking about alternative approaches to vaccination. At the heart of the issue is the individual rights vs. public heath.
Suppose that government vaccine requirements were lifted. without the requirements, several industry groups got together to establish voluntary vaccination guideline, groups like associations of pediatricians, insurers, private schools, hospitals and so on. A school or day care center does not need a 100% vaccination rate to prevent outbreaks; so these industry groups may come up with "sliding scale" guidelines to protect public health and allow greater freedom of choice.
Something like this: at 95%+ vaccination rates, schools need take NO further action. At 90 to 95%, schools should adopt quarantine protocols and train staff to recognize symptoms of certain contagious diseases. At 85 to 90%, a stricter quarantine, sanitation and training program is recommended, and more school nurses hired. Below 85% and the school should accept no additinal unvaccinated children and should notify local pediatricians.
There would be incentives for (private) schools to voluntarily adopt there guidelines: fewer sick days, better attendance, adjustments to insurance premiums, competition for students, etc
These sorts of industry-led voluntary guidelines have precedent in poultry production: http://www.poultryhelp.com/npiphistory.html
This is awful news for "Mother Gaia"! This ever growing pestilence called "humans" sucking your life blood. Oh, why can't the right virus come along and wipe out these masses so that a grievously wounded Gaia can start the healing process.
But let it be a virus that only affects black people.

I found this picture of Ron Bailey persuasively arguing his point about vaccination.
I get paid over $87 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10k a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Heres what I've been doing,,,,,,
