NY Sheriff to Constituents: Keep Your Handguns and Toss the Permit Applications
Mass defiance of the new permit process is another monkey wrench tossed in the works.

A New York lawman is winning plaudits from gun owners over his stance on firearm regulation—he wants less of it. Fulton County Sheriff Thomas J. Lorey is already known as a supporter of the Second Amendment and a member of the Oath Keepers, an organization of military personnel and police officers who vow to refuse unconstitutional orders. Despite the Empire State's fame as a jurisdiction unfriendly to private gun ownership—or, really, any activity beyind the reach of government officials—Lorey isn't alone in his views. The New York State Sheriffs Association and individual sheriffs are already on record opposing tightened gun laws and suing the governor to block their enforcement. But Lorey goes a step further, and urges his constituents to defy the state's handgun permit law.
Sheriff Lorey volunteered his county to participate in the state's already stumbling permit recertification program. As a result, some Fulton County handgun owners will receive "invitations" to go online and renew their permits under the new system—a process that's supposed to occur ever five years.
"I'm asking everyone that gets those invitations to throw them in the garbage because that is where they belong," says Lorey in the video below. "They go in the garbage because, for 100 years or more, ever since the inception of pistol permits, nobody has ever been required to renew them."
But what's to be gained by volunteering the county and then urging people to toss the applications?
"Let's have everybody's permit expire the same day and let 'em see what they're going to do with it."
He adds that the State Police are behind schedule on acquiring computers and setting up infrastructure to enforce recertification. Mass defiance of the new permit process, then, is another monkey wrench tossed in the works.
Pending the collapse of the permitting system, and the outcome of the lawsuit mentioned above, Lorey added: "In the meantime, I want to assure you that everyone in Fulton County has nothing to fear from the sheriff's office."
Sheriff Lorey retires at the end of 2015, but he predicts that a like-minded judge will seek his office and continue his stance toward self-defense rights.

Nice.
It's refreshing to read about someone doing something positive in New York.
Grand Mof Cuomo will not be pleased
Soft on crime.
Yet hard on statists. Just how I like 'em.
Oswego county is onboard as well, our sheriff even told Cuomo that if his Staties try to confiscate guns in his county he will order his department to confront them.
NY is fucking splitting apart.
I would say the country is, and that's fine by me.
Anyone who wants to boss people around, fine, go to some lib state. Just leave me the Eff alone, please.
Many sheriffs are elected. As a result, the ones who are elected in rural communities tend to be shockingly sane and reasonable. It is amazing how being accountable to the community you police, seems to deter someone from being a fascist asshole. The less accountable a LEO is to the community, the more likely he is to be an out of control fascist asshole.
Unless the community votes for fascist assholes ex Maricopa county.
Which is not rural. But I'm sure there are rural counties that elect pieces of shit like Arpaio too.
But I think that John has a point, at least in that rural communities will tend to elect people who are sane about the things that the people care about in such places, like keeping their gun rights.
Yet are hard on drug offenders.
And the reason why Maricopa keeps electing him is that his opponents manage to be bigger assholes and to antagonize people more than he does. If someone would run against him as something besides "I plan to let the brown people go", they might have a better chance.
There's nothing wrong with how Arpaio defends his county. This sub thread is reeking of bandwagon spite otherwise unseen on Reason.
Sure, there's "nothing wrong" with treating prisoners like animals. If you're an asshole, anyway.
Simple solution: don't break the law. Actions have consequences.
And being called an asshole by you is proof positive I'm right.
"They go in the garbage because, for 100 years or more, ever since the inception of pistol permits, nobody has ever been required to renew them."
Uh, sorry to break it to you, but in Montana you have to renew every four years.
I think he was talking about the permit schema as done in New York - which is about as batshit insane and self-contradictory as you can get.
And I think that NY wants people to renew permits to keep guns at all, not just for carry.
That's a shame, because Montana is on my bucket list, maybe even for retirement.
Only to conceal carry. The NY permit is to own a gun at all. Big difference, brah.
Exactly, there is no paperwork required for owning a pistol in Montana. Nor do you need a permit for open carry, only for concealed.
That's almost close enough to commute...
We had a similar thing happen in Illinois two years ago
In about a dozen counties the states attorney basically said they would not prosecute carrying concealed firearms unless there was a criminal act associated with the offense after the ban was struck down (the ruling was stayed to allow legislation to be passed)
This man is a disgrace to all things statist.
Seems about time somebody was, and yes, it does speak for itself.
Nice to hear.
Could you imagine how the progs will react to him?
I would like to see a real confrontation on this. You know, something like happened with the ranch in New Mexico, a la Cliven Bundy.
You know who else wanted certain people to register with the state?
BMV?
Hitler!!!
It's nice to see another country sheriff (an elected official, unlike the police chiefs appointed by usually-liberal mayors and therefore effectively obliged to support their agenda) stand up against the unconstitutional demands of the gun prohibitionists.

Kudos to this Sheriff. County Sheriffs are the only LE directly elected by the people. He/She is the only person with the authority and power to stand between the people and Federal Agents.
I encourage everyone everywhere to elect county Sheriffs who are Oath Keepers and constantly remind them why they were elected. That is going to become more and more important to protect what Liberty we have left to us as the Federal Government gets more and more involved in lemonaide stands and kids school lunches.
"beyind"?
Seems like some sworn law enforcement officers show a lot more common sense than the voters do, re the governor having been re-elected. I remain curious as to how the make-up of the state House and Senate worked out after the recent elections, for both of these bodies went along with the governors idiotic, dictatorial desires.
Possibly I should have added ELECTED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS.
