Who Needs Speechwriters When You Have Control-C?
President's fair shot/fair share message tonight lifts from his 2012 State of the Union address
My favorite non-Reason advance piss-take on tonight's State of the Union address is this acid-bath from Gawker's Alex Pareene, sensibly headlined "The State of the Union Is Dumb Hacks Writing Garbage Speeches." As if to demonstrate Pareene's thesis, one pre-excerpt from the speech reads like this:
That's what middle-class economics is—the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.
Bolding mine. Not only is this an example of what Pareene calls "an exercise in the proper arrangement of cliches and platitudes," it's also lifted wholesale from Obama's State of the Union address in 2012:
We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number of Americans barely get by, or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.
Obama owes himself a coke. And according to the sacred rules of Reason's Drinking Game, the rest of us owe ourselves a double shot.

Reminds me of the nodding heads Fox Fake News and CNN hire to push some buttons on a joystick on what they "approve" of in a speech or debate.
The vague platitudes get the higher joystick ratings.
i speak for all reasonoids when I say:
We all completely agree with everything you say.
Except those nodding heads don't live at 1600 Pennsylvania.
So your lord and savior does the same thing that the hated BushPigFans do.
What conclusion should you draw from that?
Um, it's Alt-C, not Ctrl-C.
/dork
Mine does Ctrl-C; Windows 7
What the hell are you running, BeOS? That's the only OS I can think of that uses that particular shortcut.
Linux does too.
None of the flavors I've ever run did. Which distros?
This particular laptop is running some two year old Ubuntu, but I'd bet every Linux firefox does, every Linux X windows program.
"That's what middle-class economics is?the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules."
No, I don't believe that is what it is at all.
everyone gets a fair shot, and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.
Sounds a lot like:
From each according to his abilities
To each according to his needs.
Well that was copyrighted so he had to paraphrase.
