Republicans Aren't Going to Raise the Gas Tax
Over the weekend, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who runs the Senate committee in charge of infrastructure, seemed to be open to the possibility that Republicans might be open to raising the federal gas tax. Other Republicans suggested they might be as well.
You can probably count out the possibility of a gas tax at this point. GOP House Speaker John Boehner seemed fairly resistent to the idea when asked about it in a press conference today.
Reuters reports:
"I've never voted to raise the gas tax," the Ohio Republican said.
Boehner said that when the Democrats controlled Congress, they could not find the votes to raise the gas tax, adding that "it's doubtful the votes are here to raise the gas tax again" in the Republican-majority Congress that took office this week.
The Reuters report suggests that the Speaker may have left himself some wiggle room to change his tune, but a spokesperson for Boehner told The Washington Post's Greg Sargent that none was intended. "The Speaker doesn't support a gas tax hike. Period." That, as they say, is that.
As for what Republicans will do come May when the current short-term highway bill expires, it's, ah, not entirely clear, especially, I suspect to Republicans.

Cut spending? No, entirely to radical.
No offense, but I did not hear Boehner saying anything like "No increase to the gas tax will pass the House. Period."
Read what he said again. He didn't even promise not to vote for a tax increase himself.
And no, his spokesflunkies denial isn't the same. And is also not an unconditional promise to vote against and kill any proposal.
I don't give a shit what Boner "says", regardless.
I still remember, "Read my lips..."
Well, didn't need to - thanks for the tax increase, Poppy.
Fuck TEAM RED, and especially Boner. Not to be trusted. I'll be watching what they do.
Damn...came here to say this. Thanks Al.
Dead on RC.
This is what Woodward and Bernstein used to call a non-denial denial.
The fucktard Boner runs the House. He could answer the question with a confident 'NO' or 'YES'. Instead he spouts poli-shit.
Hey Ho way to go Ohio.
When i hear or read about these kind of answers to simple questions I envision Samuel L Jackson as the reporter with a followup....
"English Motherfucker, do you speak it?!!"
One of my best friends is the Speaker of the Assembly for my State (Republican). They are going to raise the gas tax for my State. He didn't seem all that bothered when I told him, by my tally, my wife and I are paying 48%+ of our annual income in taxes and fees already (and that doesn't figure in the "taxiness" of the Obamacare mandates which drives that number higher). He didn't seem to care when I pointed out that they (the government in general - Fed and State) should be able to build me some roads out that amount. The idea that Republicans are fiscally conservative is nonsense. They pick and choose who gets love and who doesn't. If you're divided and voiceless, they're just as "bend you over" as the Dems. In short, the Repubs are merely the socially conservative branch of the singular Democratic Party. It's not a coincidence that my friend despises the Tea Party minded people. It upsets business as usual.
Team purple. When it comes down to it, they are very similar on everything. The Repubs just like to pretend they are for small government. The only thing the Republican party has over the Dems is at least a few real small government type. The Democratic party is running fast and far from anything like that.
The only thing the Republican party has over the Dems is at least a few real small government type.
And the increasing the size of government too little for the Democrats taste...
The Democratic party is running fast and far from anything like that.
Are they any of those Democrats left in Congress?
As for what Republicans will do come May when the current short-term highway bill expires ?.
They'll hope to cross that crumbling bridge when they come to it.
"Republicans Aren't Going to Raise the Gas Tax"
Yet.
This is such a weird thing to engage in blatant concern trolling over, considering that the gas tax hasn't been raised in forever.
But it's Suderman, so what the hell can you expect. He'll desperately grab onto anything he can, no matter how absurd.
You're such a treasure.
Tell me more about Block Insane Yomama.
Eh it's Suderman, husband of McCardle, friend of Weigel, concern troll over the Shutdown and supporter of Elmendorf.
'considering that the gas tax hasn't been raised in forever.'
I'm ignorant about gas taxes. Is it true that gas taxes also haven't been lowered in forever?
READ MY LIPS.
I certainly am not eager to pay more for gas. But if there is any tax that should be raised, it is probably the gas tax, which is a fixed amount per gallon and hasn't been raised in a long time.
Assuming that it actually is used for roads like it is supposed to be, it's pretty reasonable as far as taxes go.
But it won't be used for that.
I'm already paying almost $.40/ gal in state taxes too.
"I'm already paying almost $.40/ gal in state taxes too."
Yeah, and moonbeam was wearing a green tie at the choo-choo ribbon cutting!
Aren't you proud?
The federal gas tax is pretty fucked, you are right. I know that at least some state gas taxes do actually get used exclusively for road related things. Cancel the federal tax and leave it to the states.
It seems like the alternative to gas taxes would be more tolls (or more general taxes). I think I prefer the gas tax. Tolls just create opportunities to track people's movements.
if there is any tax that should be raised
There isn't. Full Stop.
Next topic!
Assuming that it actually is used for roads like it is supposed to be
So that's...no?
Would probably be better to do it at the state level?
Yes. That would definitely be better.
Yep, pretty much they need to strip every bloody pet project that does not build or maintain roads for cars and trucks. If that doesn't fix the problem, then turn the entire highway system over to the states and elimnate the federal tax. That might correct a few other issues as well.
Why does the tax have to be raised just because it hasn't been in a while? Must taxes forever go up? Can they never be lowered, if only due to the power of inflation?

Ky just lowered are state gas tax.
S/are/our/
Also fuck you autocorrect, I want a small s.
My initial comment was very conditional. After further thought, I conclude that the federal gas tax should be done away with completely. States do the highway maintenance anyway. They can adjust their taxes as necessary. I think it would make sense if state gas taxes went up or down, depending on what funds were needed for highways. So, no, they must not forever go up. But the gas tax is one of the few that might legitimately need to go up sometimes, unless and until highways are privatized. I don't like tolls much for privacy reasons.
See strongtowns.org for why it won't help. As long as they are building the wrong infrastructure, extra money is a waste.
http://www.strongtowns.org/jou.....s-tax.html
Careful. That analysis also advocates for mass transit and central planning.
The government has been unwilling to account for gas tax expenditures. This money has been siphoned away from road repairs and used instead for bike paths, alternative energy, walking trails, and electric auto rebates and subsidies. Neil Cavuto of Fox News has been at the forefront in pointing out the lack of accountability for these funds to date. Which Republican Presidential candidate will "seal the deal" with a call for higher gasoline taxes?
I would typically claim that I am surprised that TEAM Red is in such a rush to give away the Congress, having so recently won it, but them I remind myself that TEAM Red = The Stupid Party.
Call when they actually do it. I seriously doubt they will.
If they raise the gas taxes they are complete assholes and utter fools. Until they do or it looks like they are actually going to, why does this matter?
If you take the GOP as a whole, they ARE complete assholes and utter fools. So no surprise there.
More or less. But why get angry until they actually do this.
"Over the weekend, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who runs the Senate committee in charge of infrastructure, seemed to be open to the possibility that Republicans might be open to raising the federal gas tax. Other Republicans suggested they might be as well."
Well, today is Thursday. The GOP has had control of the House for what, two days, and they're already talking about raising taxes. Yet, the stoopid and naive (I'm looking at you, Sean Hannity) believe that the GOP is our only hope, and that if only they weren't stupid, things would be okay. The idea that the GOP is corrupt, rather than stupid, never enters their minds.......
Did Tulpa get edited and/or banned?
Sounds like a good plan to me dude. Wow.
